In a UK subreddit there was a thread of someone looking for the best kind of foam mattress available and a redditor pointed out that all the big brands (Casper, Simba, etc) all have the same base because it's a patented material and the other layers are just basic foam you can buy yourself.

So for less than $200 I got myself the different layers on Amazon and it's easily one of the best mattress I have ever slept on. Every time I lay in bed I'm surprised by how comfy, never slept better before in my life.

THIS

you'll have to pay $20 out of your own pocket, but it will be the best $20 you have ever spent in your life. You have to let it air out for about 48 hours, but those 48 hours will pay off. trust me. Do it.

Speakers will make your life so much better. I'd recommend getting a shower speaker too, your flatmates will love you.

A door stop is the right answer.

If you get a memory foam mattress topper your life will be so much better. It makes any bed amazing, and, although they aren't particularly cheap, they can last a very long time. I have this one

Get some good quality pens and books of paper. You don't want the refil pads as they always fall apart sooner or later, get some which have metal binding on one side. For pens I always got a box of these or these. They make the vast amounts of notes you need to take much better.

Don't buy the recommended reading until you have checked how many copies the library has. There's a good chance you'll be able to read them enough without paying for them, or search Bookname.pdf into google and it will probably be there.

Pint glasses are very useful things to have, but I found it added a nice touch to my flat if they were all borrowed from pubs.

get a multipack of playing cards on the cheap from amazon. You'll probably get through a fair few packs in first year. Some poker chips were a nice thing to own as well. In 3rd year I got Cards Against humanity as well, and it is a very good game for predrinks

Get minimum 1 good frying pan, 1 good saucepan, a good wooden chopping board, a good chefs knife, a baking sheet, and a colander.

Get a bottle opener like this one and you will have hours of fun pinging the caps at people

I didn't use mine much in 1st year, but all the other years of uni my bike was a great thing to have. It allows you to shop further away (so cheaper) and reduces your reliance on public transport. It also means you can get out of your area of the city occasionally, which is nice.

A french press means you can make a whole pot of great coffee for your flatmates when you are all getting up after a heavy night, at which point they might crown you or start worshiping you or some shit

Get one of the mattress pads for those beds...trust me they make it so much more comfortable to sleep on and aren't too pricey. (Something like this: http://www.amazon.com/Sleep-Innovations-2-Inch-Memory-Mattress/dp/B002NEG15E/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1373695774&sr=8-2&keywords=foam+mattress+pad+extra+long+twin )

Guys!! Guys guys guys!!! I found a memory foam mattress topper for $25, only queen size though & prime eligible. The rest are over $100. Idk if it's a mistake on their part but I bought it and they've shipped it already so woohoo!! Just thought y'all would appreciate knowing. Having a good Tuesday so far?

u/Dyan654 · 5 pointsr/cuboulder

If you’re in a 4 bedroom, they’re normal fulls! I don’t know about the other ones. Pro tip - the mattresses are slightly better than the dorms, but still pretty shit. Buy this mattress topper from Amazon, and these sheets from Target, and it’ll be the best sleep you’ve ever had.

u/benjammin9292 · 5 pointsr/USMC

Protip : go to bed bath and beyond or order off amazon or wherever the fuck, and get a memory foam top layer like this

idk which therm a rest you were looking at but for the cost of their basic model

you could get a mattress topper

my cousin slept on a mattress topper on a piece of ply wood in a van when she traveled cross country and loved it. said it was the most comfortable bed she ever had

u/parmethius2000 · 3 pointsr/Frugal

I bought this exact model a bit ago for a mattress topper but if you get the 1" thicker versions you should be able to just throw it on the floor...

I'll never be without a mattress topper like this as long as I live, that's how much more comfortable I am with it under me.

u/Pixisprinkles · 3 pointsr/BabyBumps

I was in the exact same boat! The snoogle helped a lot, but what really helped me the most was getting a memory foam mattress topper (I got this one http://www.amazon.com/Density-Elastic-Memory-Foam-Mattress/dp/B004AR5X92). No more hip pain at night!

This but keep in mind you’ll have to make some cuts. It’s extra wide but not long enough. Had to use the extra width I cut to make it the perfect length. But pretty dam ez. I’d say 15 minutes tops for this project.

u/tripleplay23 · 3 pointsr/ethtrader

Memory foam mattress topper! Cheap and will change your life.

u/skrenename4147 · 3 pointsr/overlanding

I have this exact setup and use one of these. It fits almost perfectly and sleeps two for when my wife comes along, or folds in half to be twin-bed sized if it's just me. Not super durable but very comfortable over the past year or two so far.

u/mrcj22 · 3 pointsr/NCSU

Bring a small fan like this. Dorms can get really hot, plus its great to use as white noise to focus on if people are being loud when you're getting to sleep.

I would also get a foam mattress topper. Not the terrible egg crate style, but temurpedic type memory foam. (Doesn't need to be tempurpedic brand obviously.)

u/sayyestolycra · 3 pointsr/January2018Bumpers

I just use normal sized pillows, between my thighs, against my back to lean against, and one to hug/lean forward against. I like the normal pillows bc they're easy to configure in different ways depending on any aches or pains I'm feeling.

I also got this foam pad to put on top of my mattress bc we have a super firm mattress, and sleeping on my side was really hurting my hips and shoulders. It doesn't look like much, but that pad helped soooo much. I sleep much more soundly now, and I've even been having less nightmares and waking up on my back less. Plus it's only a bit more than half the width of a double mattress, so my husband can still have his firm mattress while my side is softer.

u/markesh0 · 3 pointsr/camping

So I know how you feel, im 6'3" 375 and i hate sleeping on the ground all together.

With that said, I hope price isnt too much of an issue.

I started with a double tall air matress from some generic company. Its just to offer the buffer between me and the floor.

The winner is this guy, who makes it feel like your laying on the most comfy home bed ever... When your done, use it a home on top of your mattress, but I bought mine just for camping first.

All totaled its around $200, but you will love sleeping in it for sure.

u/eutamias21 · 3 pointsr/beyondthebump

OP could also get a floor mattress (cheaper and usually smaller).

u/Slaughterhorn · 2 pointsr/battlestations

Yeah those are legitimate concerns - I've only had it for a couple weeks, so I can't comment on the pleather's durability, but I'm sure a cover or throw would help. I usually throw a little fleece blanket on it and that helps with both the heat/breathability issue and the durability.

I know this may come across as insane, but something I've always wanted to try is getting a slip cover like this and layering a memory foam mattress topper like this underneath it, cutting it to fit as necessary. Basically just trying to turn the chair into a black hole of comfy goodness. I'll let you know if I end up trying it out!

I purchased this memory foam mattress topper last year and cut it to fit the interior of my tent. We have also used it on the floor of our home (moving in and didn't have bed arrive yet) and in both situations its been pretty comfortable. We put a duvet cover on it and roll it up with nylon straps to about 12" diameter and stick it in a closet when not in use. Pretty cheap and easy to store. If you prefer cushier mattresses I'd recommend getting something that is 4" thickness or more.

I had this topper on my mattress for years and it was excellent. But in general you want something foam. The thicker you go the better it’ll be at quieting the sound.

The only hard part about these is that it makes getting out of bed difficult. On the plus side, they help keep my arm from going to sleep when cuddling since my arms isn’t pinched when a girl lays on my arm.

You can go with other toppers. But this is what I used.

u/PTA_Mom · 2 pointsr/confession

Honestly I just got mine on Amazon and I sprung for one that was bigger than 1in thick. I think I have this one (or something extremely similar.)

It is one of the most comfortable beds I have ever slept on. I now have it in one of my guest rooms and most of my family and friends prefer to sleep in the room with that bed! So I would highly recommend those products.

u/dbcooper4 · 2 pointsr/Mattress

I have the Avocado which looks like virtually the identical specs. It is a firm mattress! I’ve tried the 2” 14-19 ILD Avocado topper in their showroom and I just sink down all the way through it @ 160lbs. I have a 3” 24 ILD Dunlop topper on my Avocado currently and it supports me well. So I would recommend 3” if that’s an option. I’m still on the fence about going softer. I would probably try an ultra soft 3” latex topper from Mayers Bedding next. Also, I have this memory foam topper bookmarked as an super-duper-ultra soft option. The YouTube review I saw said it takes 3 full points off the firmness of a mattress. Just something to keep in mind if you want to aggressively knock down the firmness of the mattress. I’m saving it as my “nuclear option” 🙂.

Glad you found my experience useful. Depending on your setup, you might find the below mattress useful. It folds up and you can use it as a seat. You might want to go with a full-blown mattress for more comfort, but this is a great space-saver, and pretty comfortable for what it is. Good luck.

I sleep on the floor. It's ok because I actually like sleeping on a rock hard surface and our bed is way too soft for me. I sleep next to the bed because snoring is not the main problem. I just don't like sharing a bed and every single time he rolls over or gets up to use the bathroom it wakes me up.

The snoring is sporadic, though. Typing this made me remember a couple of times when I ended up sleeping on the floor of the baby's room, or even in the hallway, when the snoring was bad. And yet many nights there is no snoring at all.

Maybe considering something like this that stores away and you could take it to any room you want.

Or kick him out and make him sleep on the couch.

u/pyrotonic · 2 pointsr/UCDavis

Hi! The mattress pad I bought for living in the dorms was this one:
https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B002NEG15E
I think it was cheaper when I bought it a year ago, but considering you use this every night I wouldn't get a super cheap one - your back will thank you.

It's rather cosy and can take a lot of use (no tears yet, 1 year later!) Heck, even though I have a fairly new mattress and box spring now that I'm living in an apartment I am still using the pad on top of it all. You will want a twin XL size for the topper and sheets in the dorms, but you can continue to use both of them on a regular twin bed later on.

u/benicetomexicans · 2 pointsr/subaru

I bought this for my bed, but ended up putting it in the back of my 2015 forrester during one trip - best car camping sleep ever! The queen was a little big and I had to bend it to get it to work, but it did work. Maybe try a full.

u/benjisworld · 2 pointsr/BuyItForLife

This is the best topper I've found for the price. Been using it for over a year without any problems. It's quite comfortable and doesn't get hot.

I also have one on my expensive pillow top mattress that I sleep on. It's incredible.

u/catdeuce · 2 pointsr/simracing

I just got the CSL. I like it, but it needs some adjustment. I'm 5'10" 180, and while I fit well on the 2nd to smallest size it has, it isn't super comfortable quite yet. This video has some info on what you need to do to get it better. I ended up replacing the bottom foam with 4 pieces of this, and have 2 pieces in the back and will probably put 3. I still need to drill the extra hole in the frame for the seat, since it's still a bit pinchy. But if you're up to modifying it, I think the CSL is the better buy, simply because it doesn't have a center post.

u/GypsyKylara · 2 pointsr/BabyBumps

I have a pillow top mattress and it was still too hard for me. I just bought this matress topper (cheapest I could find) and it has been great so far. https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00GP4RJUO/ref=br_it_dp_o_nS_ttl?ie=UTF8&colid=1YP2GC46XU3TM&coliid=I1Z763XW2AU7JR&vs=1

I got this one my freshman year and every one of my friends who have slept on it loved it. It's more squishy and soft during the summer but does get firmer when the weather gets cold, as all memory foam works. Just warming it up with your body for a few mins brought it back though..!

I think you should purchase a new mattress. After all, you have used the Simmons mattress for 3 years, it is time to purchase a new one. I bought a LANGRIA mattress 2 years ago, it is a gel infused memory foam mattress with cooling padding ultra soft removable cover medium support, which can make my pressure point pain relief and sleep well all night. Just share it to you!

Speaking of which, I got a 'Japanese-style futon mattress' on amazon and it's worked great. Obviously meant to be folded in up to ~90 degrees (though with my build it doesn't get past like ~135). I'm sleeping on mine full-time so I threw a 2" memory foam topper on for extra padding and it's worked great. The only thing I'll say is that the futon might be a little more difficult to cut (if you don't fit in one of the standard sizes like I did) since it'll require some sewing, but still entirely possible. You'll have no problem with any modifications to the memory foam

I haven’t tested it out besides when I was making sure it fit in my car, but I just bought this foam topper .

Not only does it fit my Honda HRV like a charm, but it also can fold up and be stored in a compact manner. Smells weird but that can be fixed with febreeze.

FTFY:

Zinus 12" Queen Green Tea mattress, middle sagging after 6-8 months (did I get a bad mattress?)

Hello all. I suffer from a chronic sleep issue for over 10 years and also fibromyalgia like body pain and pressure points. Last December after finally being sick of the Sleep Number C2 queen I've had for a number of years, I extensively researched online and bought a Zinus 12" Green Tea Mattress, Queen (https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00Q7EPSHI). At first, I had no complaints and it. However, within 6 months I definitely noticed that it's not kept it's firmness in the center middle and quickly sags in when I lay down for awhile.

I'm the exact opposite of what you'd call a heavy set person (Male 36, 5'11' and 74.8 kilograms) and am using the base of the old C2. If I move to the sides I can feel the firmness/support of what it originally was. I've even tried readded the 3" thick-4 pound foam topper I had bought for the Sleep Number (https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B004AR5X92) to see if that would fix it, but it only pronounces it more.

I've been just dealing with it for the past few months but it's only getting worse I have to believe this isn't normal. I want to start a warranty claim with Zinus but I just cringe at having to go through all of this.

I'm just wondering, was I just unlucky and get a bad pick of a mattress? Had anyone else experienced this? Any and all comments & suggestions would be appreciated!

Delayed response, but I actually use a mattress pad from amazon that lays on top of my low quality IKEA mattress, and everyone who has ever sat on/taken a nap in/ etc in that bed agreed that ours is rue most comfortable. Not too firm, not too soft. Feels like a dream.

u/liverwool · 1 pointr/AskUK

I'm with /u/LeahTheTard on this.

Our bed was awful for feeling the springs (my gf didn't have a problem so it might just be me having a princess and the pea moment), we got a memory foam topper in March and I have slept well ever since. It's one of the generic 3 inch thick toppers like this. My only complaint is that it gets quite warm in the Summer.

I have this mattress topper and a super firm mattress. Personally, I feel better whenever the mattress doesn't sink much around me and has some support. That mattress topper is only 3 inches and provides the perfect amount of foam support without you feeling like you're sleeping on a cloud.

Regarding the room space, there are ways to play where you don't have to move around much, but moving does add to the immersion and fun.

What I did to add space to my room is replace the bed with a foldable floor bed like this: https://www.amazon.com/Olee-Sleep-OLR04TM02S-Tri-Folding-Memory/dp/B0742B6F1H/ref=sr_1_5?crid=1OQYSCQ9BQJKX

Well, depending on how much you want to spend, there are a few options.

Legitimate acoustic foam might be outside of your price range, but that would be the best choice if you want serious sound-dampening. This is just an example website. I imagine there may be a music equipment store near you that would either stock the stuff, or be able to direct you to a local supplier if you don't want to buy online.

Second, mattress toppers! They work pretty well, and you could—if you're okay with how fucking gross they may be—pick some up second-hand, or just order some online/buy new stuff at a discount shop.

Another option may be to procure some paper egg cartons, preferably the 24-egg type. They baffle sound quite well, and you might even be able to take used cartons from restaurants or hotel kitchens, if you ask nicely. Just staple that shit to the walls, and you've got yourself a free sound-proof(ish) studio space.

Hope that helps.

If you have the room to spare, this is a beast. its almost as comfortable as a full on memory foam mattress. Its certainly not back packable, but my "car camping" host is a '76 Suburban, so I got the room (for 2).

u/EmreCanPuns · 1 pointr/malefashionadvice

They don't say they're waterproof, I wouldn't waterproof yours as the chemicals would dehydrate the leather. Because water is polar and oil is non-polar, whenever you oil (condition - upkeep) your boots, it essentially kinda waterproofs the leather. I've stepped in many puddles and have never had wet socks.

Definitely get a mattress topper. Here's a link to the one I bought, I would pay $200 for how comfortable it is.

What kind of topper do you have? Memory foam density matters quite a bit. The one i linked is the one I have, and the 4lb density foam is amazing. I think you can also find the 5lb density on amazon as well, and it'll prob feel like a cloud that u sink into like quicksand.

Hyundai Elantra Touring,

Memory foam topper, Like This, trimmed to fit. slightly shorter than regular twin, and since I'm only using have the backseat it is quite a bit narrower.

u/GoorooDougie · 1 pointr/CX5

I've got a 2016.5 CX-5 Touring, just went and measured. From back hatch to end of center console is 67". With passenger seat pushed all the way forward, you can get to about 77". I've laid down diagonal (I'm 5'10', medium build) and it's doable, though not very comfortable. Better would probably be one of those tri-fold mattresses (link below), which fits perfectly if you move passenger seat full forward and lay down 60% of the back seat. I've laid the mattress in (it's 75" x 25" unfolded) and it fits great, feels comfy, but I haven't yet slept on it that way :)

I bought this and absolutely LOVE it. I cut it to the shape of the inside of the teardrop and covered it with the shallowest fitted sheet I could find (9" deep) and its really, really comfortable. What I like about it a lot was there are two firmnesses put together into one mattress. Helps a lot with support.

You have a couple of options, but as morgf said, you should probably try them out if you can before getting them to see which one feels better to you.

A couple of options:
Latex: http://www.mattresses.net/latex-mattress-topper-latex-core.html

Latex will last more, but at the same time is more expensive. It really depends on what makes you feel better. I would suggest to go on a 3" topper instead of a 2" topper, it will give you probably that softer/plush feeling you are looking for. On the latex one, you should get the soft version mattresses.net offer. http://www.mattresses.net/queen-3-inch-natural-talalay-latex-mattress-topper.html

I'm saving up to buy the twin mattress topper and the full mattress topper on my Household Wishlist. My mattress sucks and my daughter's mattress sucks and we want to be comfortable but we really can't afford new mattresses right now. It's a crime how expensive mattresses are!! lol

The other thing I'm saving up for isn't really a need but I would love it. It's on my Reading Nook/Comfort zone wishlist because I want to create my own little zone in my room. lol It's this and it looks so amazingly comfortable! I think if I had it, I would lay in it forever.

Super Nintendo, Sega Genesis When I was dead broke, man I couldn't picture this.

You might consider getting a memory foam topper for your bed in the interm. My grandmother's bed is about 20+ years old and has some painful areas. But the foam topper blunts most of these uncomfortable areas and makes her bed sleepable. Just something to consider. Also you might want to see about reducing the noise level in your room too. Thinks like computer towers, fans, etc. Can create a white noise that you ignore while awake but can affect your brain as you try to reach deep sleep.

Also FWIW I've heard that the brain's "sleep cycles" are 90 minutes long. That is once your asleep your brain takes about 45 minutes to hit it's most regenerative state, after which it slowly crawls back to "light" sleep. If you don't wake during light sleep it goes back for another deep cycle.

If a person is awoken during a deep cycle it's more jarring to the senses than waking up during the light side of the cycle. I am just relating what I've heard. Best of luck finding a better night's sleep. :)
