Hey man/ma'am, I used to have that same issue. Give these a shot. 20-30 minutes before bed, they work well and taste good. Don't overdo them!!

Also related: I used to get 5-6 hours, max. Every since I got back hard into lifting, I have to have eight hours to feel good mentally and physically. I get 9.5 on the weekend and I feel brand-new when that happens. You are 100% right in that good sleep is critical.

u/attunezero · 11 pointsr/GetOutOfBed

Keep your curtains open. Try low dose time release melatonin (or Valarian root) to help you get to bed early. I like this. Use Sleep As Android to set an alarm that will wake you up in a light phase of sleep so you feel refreshed. After waking up use a blue light device (or get some sunshine for awhile) to help reset your sleep rhythm. Also if you live in a cold/dark/cloudy area try a vitamin D supplement. These are things that have helped me get into a healthy sleep schedule, hope it helps you!

I have a few solutions to this as i myself have gone to the extremes on sleep deprivation at lib. Here are a few game changers that made a world of difference.

  1. Your tent. We found that righ as the sun comes up sleep is almost impossible due to light and rockstar heat. We got a bunch of those emergency thermal blankets and lined the exterior of our tent almost entiely in them. This both blocks light and a huge amount of sun heat. They make it seem like air conditioning compared to not using them. Packing tape works very well on holding them together and allows you to customize their shape to fit your specific tent. Another tip is to sandwich or layer them between a fabric material to dampen the noise they make with the wind as they move. Those mitary guilly style camo covers work well too. You basically want to hold them down as well as possible to limit how much they move to eliminate the noise they make, which is like tin foil.
Be creative and innovative with these as they can look really cool too! Your tent will be dramatically more comfortable all day.

    https://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B01LZN0KGB/ref=mp_s_a_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1526521307&sr=8-1-spons&pi=AC_SX236_SY340_FMwebp_QL65&keywords=survival+blanket&psc=1

They come in multi packs to save money. Also if you have extra, im sure your neighbors will appreciate it greatly if you donate a few. The only drawback is the noise, so ensure you address this. Installing them on the inside of your tent is also an option.

  2. Sound. Earpeace hd earplugs are amazing
    https://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B076VTXWBP/ref=mp_s_a_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1526521562&sr=8-1-spons&pi=AC_SX236_SY340_QL65&keywords=earpeace&psc=1

I go to tons of concerts! These are exceptional not only for being FRONT ROW! but amazing for sleep as well. They are inexpensive and worth every dollar, and super comfortable!

  3. Brain spa.

    Onnit new mood!

    https://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B00AFB5U3Q/ref=mp_s_a_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1526521888&sr=8-1-spons&pi=AC_SX236_SY340_QL65&keywords=new+mood+onnit&psc=1

Take these before bed. Such a great balanced formula and one of the best regenerative items ive found yet!
    Nuff said

  4. Light in the morning or anytime of the day.

    https://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B00GSO1D9O/ref=mp_s_a_1_5_a_it?ie=UTF8&qid=1526522197&sr=8-5&keywords=eye+mask+for+sleeping&dpPl=1&dpID=31eeIOXqJoL&ref=plSrc

Ill keep this short, they just work, period.

  5. Cool as LIB!
    https://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B00XKLYWFU/ref=mp_s_a_1_3?ie=UTF8&qid=1526522342&sr=8-3&pi=AC_SX236_SY340_FMwebp_QL65&keywords=cool+towels+for+neck&dpPl=1&dpID=41vWMI5EJzL&ref=plSrch

We discovered these and theyre awesome! We wet them down at the water stations which are everywhere throughout Lib. They feel amazing in the sun and in a wierd way are kinda fun, idk. Lol

  6. Bring vitamins! I recommend D3, ZINC, B COMPLEX, AND FISH OILS.
Make sure you keep these all cool and dry.

I recommended a cooler scenario in another sub, but ill repeat it here.

Dry ice in your cooler is the best way to refrigerate all weekend that i have found, minus actually having a refrigerator.

Tip: careful with dry ice as it can burn you and mess up your cooler if not prepared properly. Wrap it in brown paper to prevent direct contact with the sides and bottom of your cooler. Also, if you put actual ice around the dry ice this works too. We got a solid 3 days of awesome cooler performance this way. Cover your cooler during the day with the above mentioned mylar blankets for even better performance.

  7. Protein power! You need nutrition if you want to rage like a rockstar! Many flavors and its super fast and simple to prepare. I use mp combat protein, works well and tastes great!

  8. Bed/air mattress. One oddity we found with our air mattress. At night the ground and ambient air temp drops a bunch on some occasions. So the air inside the mattress cools as well which made for an extra chilly experience one night. We insulated the bottom and sides of our air mattress with a fleece or similar blanket which helped keep our body heat inside the mattress.

  9. Feed me! Bring good healthy food like apples, avocados, bananas, pita bread, peanut butter or almond butter. These are delicious and full of proper energy. Keep junk food to a minimum, but dont eliminate it, because well, sometimes cheese its are bomb as hell! You just dont want to be weighed down by garbage. Tip: the acai warrior bowls at the food courts are legit! And, try the poutine for breakfast! You wont regret! Also we found that Mountain house freeze dried packets are a convenient and awesome way to chow down. You'll need hot water for some and regular temp for the cereals and desserts.

I hope this helps. Unfortunately I can't be at LIB this year, so this post helps me cope with said situation.

I have many other pro tips if anyone is interested so hit me up

    Love you LIB!

My son has adhd, and we did the melatonin thing for a bit, but it started causing him to have night terrors, waking up in the middle of the night, groggy.. etc. it seemed to help him fall asleep, but it was more of a crash, not a gradual path to sleep. We do these now as needed, and it’s been a lot better, it has a tiny bit of melatonin and the rest is all natural. It relaxes him so he gradually drifts to sleep and stays asleep, no side effects in the am -we do no tv and/or electronics 30-1hr before bed. (They stimulate the brain more when you have adhd ) LUNA Kids | #1 Sleep Aid Tablets... https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00U470TAK?ref=ppx_pop_mob_ap_share

I hope you find my rambling useful, lol. Adhd is no joke and has so many layers, something I knew nothing about until my son was diagnosed

I thought the same thing the first time I heard about this but evidently there was a recent study that concluded 300ug is actually the ideal amount to regulate sleep cycles. I'll post it if I can find it. Here is a bottle of 300ug tablets on Amazon.

Edit: Found it.

I see similarities in your post about my daughter. She’s 4, but will be 5 in a couple months. This is what worked for us:

We have her in dance.

She is in a Pre K program that is very much like school (not just singing and crafts). she THRIVES with the schedule and the learning. This was a big step towards her moods changing as she loves going to school now and being challenged and learning new things.

Now, this may be an isolated situation but: Turns out our daughter has major sleep apnea. We did not know this since she sleeps in her own room with her door shut. The doctors think she’s sleeping a couple hours a night. This would be a huge factor to her insane mood swings. She will randomly fall asleep around 4pm and sleep hard for a couple hours, but otherwise we didn’t realize how much sleep she wasn’t getting. Her sleep apena is from her tonsils. She is actually getting them removed ASAP and we are hoping this will help her get a good nights sleep which will help her mood swings. Doctor also suggested for now until she has her surgery to give her this. It’s helped her fall asleep (we give it to her 30-60 mins before bed) and when we put her to bed she actually goes right to sleep, or she will ask to go to bed on her own. we have seen such a change in her attitude since she seems to be getting a better sleep. We also force her to have a nap now, even if it’s a short one it helps. We hope when the tonsils are out she will improve even more.

So, maybe start with the link and see if that’s something you want to try to see if part of the issue is she’s not sleeping enough at night. Next, put her in a high energy activity like soccer or hip hop where they are constantly moving. Then I would get her in a school program that isn’t just crafts and singing, but more like a school setting that follows a curriculum. These are things that helped our daughter and maybe they will help yours too.

Diphenhydramine isn't great for your brain, but the reason you feel dumb in the morning is simply that it has a long half-life (9-12 hours). This means that even 24 hours later, there's still a bit left in your system, interfering with your reasoning abilities.

I find it unfortunate that there hasn't been more effort to develop non-addictive sleep aids with a shorter half-life. One option that you can look into is another antihistamine called doxylamine. It lasts a bit less long.

u/nightin_gale · 5 pointsr/DSPD

In short, I was in a very similar situation. I have been suffering from similar issues for than 15 years. About two years ago, after hundreds of hours of research, consultations with sleep experts, and self-experiments, I managed to find a way out. I have been waking up naturally at 7am and falling asleep within <15 mins since.

Taming my sleep schedule required multiple measures. But, combining all of these together, completely changed my life.

  1. LIGHT THERAPY FIRST THING IN THE MORNING - this one has a huge impact, not only on my sleep schedule but also on my alertness during the day. I have tried five different recommended lamps and found North Star 10,000 by Alaska Northen Lights to be the most effective, even though it's a bit pricey and bulky. This model is the closest one to what was used in clinical studies that demonstrated the efficacy of light therapy. Every morning, after waking up I get myself out of bed and go sit/lie next to the lamp for 30 mins. As I mentioned, I start to feel a lot more alert within 20 mins. I do this everyday.
  2. LIGHT DEPRIVATION TWO HOURS BEFORE BED TIME - stop using any screen 1.5 hours before your designated bed time. Can't emphasize it enough. I discovered that, like many others with this disorder, I am hyper sensitive to light. I found out that computer screens, TVs, and mobile phone screens can be devastating to my already poorly performing self-regulating mechanism. Blue light blockers are nice, but unfortunately, are no substitute to putting the screen away. Also, dim the lights around the house and avoid bright fluorescent lamps.
  3. MELATONIN TO DIAL BACK MY CYCLE - I learned that 0.3mg (300 microgram) melatonin 4-6 hours before my bedtime really helps my circadian rhythm to shift back a couple of hours when combined with light therapy in the following morning. I came across this fact when reading through hundreds of clinical studies. I was also surprised that such a small dose is doing anything, but apparently, it does wonders.
  4. AVOID CAFFEINE - similar to my hyper sensitivity to light, a cup of tea in the morning can throw me off my sleep time.
  5. WAKE UP AT THE SAME TIME EVERY DAY- I know it sounds impossible, but after getting my routine in place (more on how I got there below), to maintain it, I wake up at the same time every day - weekdays and weekends. Any continued deviation, even for two days, throws me off an hour or two of my cycle.
  6. FALLING ASLEEP WITH RACING THOUGHTS - another thing that helped me tremendously to get into the adjusted sleep schedule was to listen to audiobooks when I having racing thoughts, or generally, when not falling asleep within 10 mins. Anxiety and racing thoughts when lying in bed were a common occurrence. A gentle distraction - such as in the form of an audiobook - made wonders for me. Instead of turning from side to side for hours, I just felt asleep within minutes after starting to listen. Bedtime meditation also works but audiobooks are easier to start with (HEADSPACE actually have some great content, and also has built a dedicate sleep section in their app).
  7. SLEEP HOW MUCH I NEED, NOT MORE - I experimented with how much time of sleep I actually need. I noticed, that 7:30 hours is exactly what I need to fall asleep easy, have a non-fragmented sleep, and function well. Trying to sleep more was counter productive and deteriorated my sleep quality and made it harder to fall asleep at the same time. Today, I'd rather err on sleep to little, and not too long. It helps me maintain my routine.
  8. OTHER - Aerobic exercise is a great habit, which also improves the quality of my sleep. Another thing that I found out is that camping outdoors (when/where it is sunny) really helps with many of the items above, and is a great way to start the shift.

When I was looking for a cure, I found encouragement in reading forums like this, which illustrated to me that I am not alone, and people do figure out how to overcome this eventually. I don't think that there is a silver bullet for fixing it, nor that its a one-size-fits-all solution. For me, educating myself on this (here's a really great resource to start with), experimenting to find what works and what not, and committing to resolve it, eventually paid off.

Have faith, and more so, luck, in finding a way to a healthy and sustainable resolution.

[These] (http://www.amazon.com/Natrol-Melatonin-Dissolve-Strawberry-60-Count/dp/B007ZN7AF8/ref=sr_1_5?ie=UTF8&qid=1395342256&sr=8-5&keywords=melatonin) are the ones I use, and they melt in your mouth. I take the whole thing if I have a solid 8 hours I can sleep, otherwise I cut it in half. They sell 5 mg ones too. Good stuff.

u/Articus · 3 pointsr/Supplements

I've come across a supplement, Rutaesomn, that supposedly helps you quickly process the caffeine in your system so you can sleep. I've never tried it, nor do I know anyone personally who can vouch for how effective it is though.

If anyone has any experience with it, feel free to chime in.

u/alwayspickingupcrap · 3 pointsr/Nootropics

I found that Time Released Melatonin 1mg is very powerful. Too powerful for me but maybe an option for you?

Also Natural Calm Magnesium Is a particularly sedating form of magnesium in my experience.

The least practical form of magnesiumon a regular basis is a hot epsom salt bath. For me it’s about as sedating as a double dose of benzos.

[edit: Apology: reread your question and realized you’re looking for alternatives to melatonin. Will leave up that first sentence though, since I haven’t seen much discussion about time release melatonin and I was really surprised at how different it felt than 0.5mg quick dissolve melatonin.]

u/amstarcasanova · 3 pointsr/RandomActsOfAB

Melatonin is amazing! The only ones that have worked really well for me are these sublingual ones. They are seriously amazing (and yummy) and I don't think I'll ever live without them! :P

u/rzzrrrz · 3 pointsr/Nootropics

I've been having issues falling asleep and ended up fixing it with a most wonderful drug... Please, don't be skeptical and just give this thing a try (I know... $45 for a blue light? But it works for me):

http://www.amazon.com/Nightwave-Sleep-Assistant-Nw-102-Original/dp/B0036FJ7AU/

How it works is that the blue light pulsates and when you look at the reflection of the light on the ceiling, each time the light dims, your eyes will start closing and after a few minutes you just fall asleep.

I've had this thing for a couple months now and it continues working for me. It lasts about 6 weeks with one 9v battery I guess, but I ended up jerry rigging it with an old adapter I had lying around.

u/ChevRonBurgandy · 2 pointsr/withings

Such a shame, the product had such good promise. Hopefully all can be fixed with software and firmware updates.

This is what we use

Our kids wake up when they her the door. I had to lube the door to fix that issue. I also have a chair in their room and have slept there as well. We also play music to cover the sound of me leaving their room.

I know you want to be a good father and not hurt them by kicking them out of the bed, but it's not healthy to you. Sometimes some of us here are way too nice and sacrifice ourselves to the point were we are pushed out of the relationship or stop being our self.

u/nijoli · 2 pointsr/Random_Acts_Of_Amazon

I highly highly highly recommend using melatonin to sleep when camping. I don't use it much other times, but a boost to your snooze is something worth thinking about when trying to sleep with rocks underneath you and weird sounds, you know? They sell it for pretty cheap on Amazon and there are not drowsy side effects. You will wake up totally refreshed and ready for the great outdoors!

u/upsidedownbackwards · 2 pointsr/TalesFromRetail

I use this when I need to knock myself out. The stuff from niquil. Not to be confused with zzzquil which is diphenhydramine. Doxylamine dreams are pretty intense though.

I only take 1/2 a pill but its says to take a whole one. It's an antihistamine, like Benadryl, but it works better. They have it on Amazon if you aren't a Costco member.

The first time I went to Europe I had no problem sleeping but I was also drinking a lot so I think that made me crash. The second time I went I didn't sleep more than an hour for the whole first week. It was such a waste and I can't even describe how bad it felt. Plus if you take one on the plane you might actually sleep and feel refreshed when you land instead of starting out feeling like crap.

Wait so its just to help you sleep? I would recommend Doxylamine Succinate, its OTC and knocks me the fuck out. Ive heard that longterm use can cause muscle deterioration though so be careful if you go that route.

Its found in sleep aids like this:

u/BentLife8911 · 1 pointr/stopdrinking

I used to use some stuff called Fade Out by Redcon1 (I think) to get some sleep at night on my non-drinking stints. Valerian root, melatonin, and some vitamins. Worked like an absolute charm, (none of the ingredients were effective for me on their own) and completely natural. But since it’s made by a lifting supplement company it’s on the pricey side.

I’ve since found a capsule that’s basically identical ingredients that is quite a bit cheaper: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B015QGJ98G?ref=yo_pop_ma_swf
Does the trick for me. Not sure if this was what you were looking for.

okay, i'm going to ask a genuine question.

i am a seeker of knowledge with no dog in this fight one way or the other. but i'm a big big fan of Calms Forte a natural sleeping aid by Hyland's Homeopathics. this stuff knocks me right into sleepy bye land and it says it's homeopathic. when i take one i can feel it working, relaxing my muscles and then kapow! i'm out until the morning. if i take the max dose of three, when i wake up i feel like i'm arriving on the planet from about a 1000 light years away. it definitely does something.

someone told me once it's not really homeopathic. but it's got those little 3x and 4 x thingeys right in the list of ingredients.

does anyone know what the deal is?

When LO was young I found it especially hard to fall back asleep. My body was in an alert state, waiting for her to make a sound. My mind would also be racing with questions, things to research, reminders to self. In retrospect, I think I had some postpartum anxiety. My partner has always been able to fall asleep within minutes. Here is what helped me:

  • Take shifts. I have baby from 10 pm to 2 am, partner has baby from 2 am to 6 am for example. When my partner had baby, I would sleep in a different room if possible and wear earplugs. The earplugs really helped me let go of the alert state and relax.
  • If I needed to nurse LO during partner's shift, my partner would get baby, change her if needed, and bring her to me. When we were done nursing, they would burp her and get her back down to sleep. I would stay in bed and rest.
  • I used guided sleep exercises on Headspace, or I would lead myself through a relaxation exercise. Slowly relax each part of your body, starting with your toes and gradually working your way up to the top of your head.
  • Box breathing
  • Slowly recite a mantra with your breath. Mine was "Rest, relax, and melt."
  • I read books by the Bronte sisters to lull my brain into a sleepy state.
  • If a worry or concern popped into my head, I would tell myself "That is an issue for future [my name]. I am in the present, and right now I am giving myself the gift of sleep. My only job right now is to rest."
  • After I weaned LO, I would take some magnesium and calcium mixed with warm water before bed. It really helps my muscles relax. (It might be nursing friendly, but I discovered it after I weaned her, so I didn't check with my doc.)

Your sleep is precious, and insomnia is maddening. It gets better. Eventually LO can sleep in her own room, she will sleep through the night consistently (when she isn't having a sleep regression), and there will be a time when you can get rid of the baby monitor. This isn't forever.

Sounds pretty standard to me - The active ingredient in ZzzQuil is Diphenhydramine HCI, which is a popular antihistamine, marketed as both allergy medication (smaller doses) and sleep aid (higher doses).

Branded stuff is expensive- you'd be better off getting a generic. I buy this when I want diphenhydramine. Two pills (or 50mg) is the standard dose for sleeping - same as the ZzzQuil.

I work swing shift (1:45PM-10:15PM) so I hear you on the sleep. I'm a notoriously bad sleeper- I'm finicky, I wake up every hour or so, I have to wear earplugs and have white noise and drug myself... to start. I also have pretty mild reactions to medication, so where a lot of sleep aids will cause my partner to be dead to the world for 48 hours, I might get slightly better sleep than I would've elsewise.

I prefer trazodone, which is an old antidepressant which has an off-label use of sleep aid. I do have dysthymia (chronic, but mild, depression) so that is pretty ideal for me, but I've been doing without an rx for it for a while. It helps get you to sleep but it doesn't knock you out.

So far as stuff you can access without a doctor - I've found that while diphenhydramine helps me get to sleep, it's not a "knock-me-out" kind of sleep aid, which is nice. It's not quite as good as the trazodone, but if you're generally a good sleeper (which it doesn't sound like you are) it's probably sufficient. (Again, this stuff is cheap.)

You could also try taking a melatonin supplement before bed. I'm not entirely sold on how it works (or whether it's placebo effect) but my dad has had decent luck with it. I've used it too, only problem is that it makes me far more aware of my dreams, and what dreams I do remember are kind of fucked up. I understand that's not unusual for melatonin. It isn't habit-forming but I've noticed it does get less effective as time goes on.

Most recently I've been using Doxylamine Succinate... it's more apt to knock me out than the above, though I can still get up for work easily enough the next morning. This is my "heavy hitter" right now, though it may just be because I'm not used to it yet.

If you haven't already, consider getting some blackout curtains, earplugs, and white noise (I use an in-room air conditioner on fan).

u/SJKoeh · 1 pointr/insomnia

I would second cutting back on drinking - that's one of the only things that's really helped me sleep better. But for what it's worth, it took a while (like 2 months?) for me to really feel a difference there.

I used to take these: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0026KLHEU supplements that are a combo of melatonin, chamomile and some other herbs. They worked so well for about 6 months (for a little while I took one every night, then just a few times a week), but lately they have been making me feel miserable in the morning even when I get the sleep cycle timing right and get plenty of sleep.

Friends of mine that are in medical school have been talking about magnesium a lot lately, so I'm going to try that one next but am interested to see what works for other people too!

u/strangenormal · 1 pointr/sleep

It was effective, but unreliable for me. The best experience I had was using a low dose of slow release melatonin. I've experimented with four different brands/doesages, and I can firmly say that less is more. When I took a low dose (<2 mg) I had a much higher percentage chance of staying asleep for the entire night. The higher doses (> 5mg) would cause me to fall asleep quickly, but I would usually wake up 3-4 hours later and be wide awake for the rest of the night. I'd recommend this as a good one to try: Natrol 1mg Melatonin Slow Release Tablets

1mg will allow you to start with a low dose to test the effectiveness and then experiment with higher does by taking more than one.

Good luck!

I take 2 of each before I go to bed and when I wake up (1 of each). Does not make me groggy. Good luck!

melatonin would be a great help when i transition to working overnight!

try this.

i know it says it's homeopathic and that homeopathy is suppose to be bunk. but either it isn't bunk in this case, or this product isn't really homeopathic. it really works and won't leave you groggy.

as far as the homeopathic issue, i know a handful of scientists who swear by this stuff.

Doxylamine Succinate.

It's the shit in Nyquil that puts you to sleep. It's dirt cheap when you buy it in tablet form (and without all the other crap in Nyquil). Half a 25mg tablet will put most people into a deep sleep in under 20 minutes.

My only advice is to not take it unless you're ready to sleep right then. Unlike other sleep aids like melatonin, the DS tab won't facilitate a state of sleepiness, it'll shut you the fuck down.

Me too.

Try melatonin. Divine medicine and it is 100% safe.

They sell in capsules from 0.3mg to 5mg. Do not buy the 5mg, it is a horse dose. Try 1mg first and go up if necessary.

Usually in 30 minutes I'm dizzy already and I sleep DEEP for eight hours straight.

I have taken Drift Off at times. It has amazing reviews.

The aura is actually $300 and has a sensor you put under your mattress. Still expensive.
