I was wondering why it seemed familiar
/u/lvwagner messaged us yesterday hours ago commenting on the rather dated nature of the Silverfish Full face guide linked in our wiki. So, with the aim of replacing it and adding to my already-pretty-extensive Safety Gear Guide, I present the Full Face Helmet guide!
It's not finished, and I'm open to adding more - so feel free to leave any suggestions in the comments below!
Helmets are a seriously important piece of kit for skating, and we’ve already got a pretty good guide for half-shell lids. However, once you start going faster you’ll find that your piss-pot helmet just won’t cut it.
That’s where a FULL FACE helmet comes in.
Yes, they’re expensive. Not prohibitively so, but you’ll be paying at least double the price of a standard half-shell helmet. Sure, you could skimp on a cheap one [please don’t buy that…], but this is your head we’re talking about protecting here. You only get one skull.
In terms of SAFE**^ full-face helmets, you have two primary options.
|Pro [+] |Con [-]
|:-|:-
|Designed for longboarding. | Expensive
|Optimum visibility
|Aerodynamics
|Visor for blocking wind at speeds
|Shape is designed for easy tucking
|Lightweight
|Pro [+] |Con [-]
|:-|:-
|Cheaper| Non-aerodynamic
|Same level of safety rating | No stock visor
|| ^^[Usually] heavier
|| Less visibility
^^ ^yes, ^I ^know ^that ^there ^are ^other ^options ^out ^there ^like ^skydiving/paragliding ^helmets, ^or ^even ^motorbiking. ^But ^I ^don't ^believe ^they're ^safe ^enough ^to ^recommend ^in ^this ^guide.*
For longboarding-specific helmets, you have several common options.
| Helmet | Price
|:-|:-
|Predator DH6 | $325
|Triple 8 Racer | $300
| New Olders Super Race | ~$220
| Vector m-5 | $220
Once you delve into mountain bike helmets, however, there's a lot more choice - not all of which will be good for skating.
By far the most commonly used MTB helmet used for skating is the BELL DROP ($110). Cheap, CPSC certified and relatively light, you couldn't really ask for much more - except perhaps a Roger Bros Bell Drop Visor ($25), or maybe the DIY option.
The other common option is the 661 Comp Shifted ($74), although it's more bulky than the Drop and slightly heavier, too.
In the end, the main decider on which helmet you get is going to be price. If you can afford a longboarding-specific helmet, by all means go for it. If you're planning to race seriously, the benefits of a helmet like that are massive. However, if you just want some added protection and your budget can't quite stretch to the ~$200 mark, then know that you'll be just as safe in a MTB lid like the Bell Drop or 661 Comp.

Rubie's does make a good product once in a while, like this great Boba Fett helmet. Unfortunately, when they first start selling it for $30 back in 2015, it was quickly discontinued and they brought it back this year, only for around $50 it seems (none of the other helmets from the same line have increased in price, though).
I actually found it on Amazon here
The comments for the mask on Amazon are amusing.

Can't vouch for the quality, but the people who've bought it seem to like it.
There's a few ways you can go about making a mask. As far as the helmet goes, the best method I know is papercraft and resin. More on that later.
You can always take a thick plastic hockey mask and carve out the basic shape. Personally I use this particular mask. It's super cheap, but very rigid for such a cheap mask. I've made a similar, albeit sloppy, skull mask in my earlier days of prop and costume making. I would upload pictures right now, but can't seem to find any at the moment. (another result of amateur work before I realized I should document and properly file EVERYTHING I do.) That's a pro tip in itself. The only reason my piece turned out so sloppy is because I neglected to plan anything. I just went "Fuck it!" and zoomed my way through the process. ANYWAYS... take the hockey mask and hack off large pieces to get a basic shape. Also hack off that nose. Then sand everything to the shape that you want. No sugarcoating, this is a bitch to do by hand; it's infinitely easier with a sander or a rotary tool. Remember to wear a respirator when you do this so you don't breath in any plastic dust. I used a layer of paper mache to cover up all the holes, including the one left by cutting off the nose, let dry, primed and painted. You can also do what I do now, as I don't like how messy paper mache gets. I use a bit of Sculpey clay to fill in the holes. Then I bake them using a hair dryer/heat gun and keep them in place using epoxy. Then resin the whole thing tight, prime, paint, then finally re-resin if you want a shiny finish/extra protective layer.
The other method I know of is to form a mask out of plaster bandages (not the particular brand I use, I get mine at whatever local hobby store. Link to show in case you've never heard of this stuff.) I realize this is getting WAY too long, so I'll neglect to put a how to in this comment as there's a ton of great guides (with pictures) on the internet. However if you'd like me to break it down just let me know. I will say though, the best advice I can give about this method is even if it's a pain to wash out, if you apply this stuff directly to your face, MAKE SURE you put generous, GENEROUS! amounts of petroleum jelly in all your hair that might even consider getting near these bandages; your eyebrows included.
I realize this is getting really long. I do apologize. So as far as helmets go, it's not exactly what you want, but it's a very good start for a paper/resin helmet. If you want any further explanation on ANY of this, don't hesitate to ask. I'll try to upload the few pictures that I might have as well.
tl;dr: sorry even the tl;dr is too lengthy. Hope this helps though. Best of luck!
[edit]: I realized after I typed all this out you asked about foam crafting. Sorry about that... I don't have enough experience working with foam to make a mask like this and give advice.
[edit2]: I also forgot to mention, to attach the mask to the helmet and make it move you can always use a metal bracket placed stationary on the mask and on a tight hinge on the helmet.

I just googled “official joker movie mask” and I saw a bunch on eBay. I’m in the US, are you? Maybe location affects it.
I wish I took more pictures of the process :-/ but I'll try to put that together with some Internet pics.
Basically I got cheap goalie mask as the base and cannibalized an old paintball mask. That's not the actual one, one I had came free with gear, really cheapy. Last thing I got were these steam punk goggles. I know there were cheaper ones; I think I only paid $12 for 'em.
SO I got all my pieces and held them in place with duct tape. Then paper mache, paint, and lacquer to keep everything on. Goggles were the most expensive part because I happened to have the pb mask laying around. Could have done it cheaper but I felt the green lenses REALLY pulled it together.

With Halloween right around the corner...
I saw a similar item in the process of looking for the one pictured here, and this was in the "Customers Who Bought This Item Also Bought" section.
Yeah, but I used a simpler mask since I didn't want it to be as detailed. It worked really well. It doesn't destroy the masks or anything either, so if it doesn't work out for whatever reason you can always use them for another method.
Yeah, we just bought these and painted them and made the guy from a pillowcase. Good call on buying them though, the girl masks were so annoying and took forever!
ok, took a little longer to come post this, but here it is.
Obviously you need a mask. Any hockey mask will do as long as you have an imagination, but this is the one I used here.
First you want to sand it down until the whole surface is rough. Sandpaper or a sanding sponge are fine.
Next you can use a drill to drill out movie accurate holes.
Take a sharp object and slash the fuck out of the mask. Or just cut specific lines that you want for scratches.
Sand it a little bit to smooth out the cuts and wipe it clean to remove the plastic dust.
Use Krylon Almond spray paint for the base coat. Let it dry and cut it a bit more and sand it a little in places for texture.
Spray paint it again with the almond for the final spray coat and let it dry.
Hand paint the chevrons or use tape to do it like someone else suggested.
Then the rest of the colors are up to your preference. I like dark browns, black, forest green, yellow, bright red, dark red, light brown, etc...
You'll want to use a damp cloth and slightly dip it in whatever paint you want to shade the mask with. Lightly wipe the paint on the mask and spread it using the wet cloth.
After getting the mask to what you want it to look like, let it dry and then use the krylon clear coat spray paint to finish it off.
Here's the paints and techniques from the last time i did this:
Krylon Cover Maxx Almond spray paint for the base and second coat.
Krylon Cover Maxx Crystal Clear Acrylic spray paint for the last coat once everything else is done.
Apple Barrel paints:
Jet Black
Chocolate Sprinkle
Brown Oxide
Bright Red
Lime Tree
Yellow Flame
Too Blue
White
For the dirty look I mixed the browns and black and sometimes added small amounts of green.
The blood is a mix of browns and red with some light amount of black. After it dried i smudged on black with my fingers to give it some texture.
