Don't worry about bugging the other passangers. The majority of them have flown with a baby and know how stressful it is for the parents, so they are usually pretty understanding.

>We don’t want to succumb to using the iPad to distract her

Seriously? On a five hour flight? You do whatever works, instead of worrying about screen time. A flight is not the time or place to set screen time limits.

When my daughter was that age-ish, I packed a bag with various "surprises" for the flight - and when things started to go south, I'd pull something new from the bag. This only works if the "surprise" items are things your kiddo has not played with before.

These are a must because they are pretty magical and no-mess:

If you'll be sitting by the window, get some static clings, colorforms, or those gummy re-usable window stickers for the plane window and the wall of the plane.

Some fidgets:

Check out the dollar section at the front of Target - sometimes they have unusual items that might be entertaining for a kid on a plane flight. Also, if your kiddo likes certain characters or animals, tey might enjoy blind bags (my kiddo loved the Puppy In My Pocket blind bags, though your kiddo may be a little young - you can make your own "blind bags" by wrapping small animals, little people, stuffed animals, etc. in wrapping paper for her to open if thigs get really bad).

Bring lots of snacks - even junky snacks that you would not normally give - and something to drink (either from a sippy cup or bottle) when the plane is taking off and landing (to help with the pressure on her ears).

I'm finding it difficult to understand. Why does it have to fit in your wallet? I understand you want to keep it organized so that you just have to to pick up your wallet rather than remember more stuff. HOWEVER, don't you have keys on you when your out of your home? Why don't you just get a little pen with a keyring on it? That way the pen can be even smaller than if it had to be card sized/shaped, its easier to hold precisely which is important for legible writing, and I'd imagine alot easier to get ink refils. That's just how I'd solve this. http://www.amazon.com/Utility-TU246-TelePen-Telescoping-Refills/dp/B007IOHPKY/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1405300688&sr=8-1&keywords=True+Utility+TU246

I was thinking more of gashapon, Funko, and Dunny style blind boxes which are more expensive and often have Rare/SuperRare/Mystery contents - and Hatchimals which are marketed to 5-year-olds and come with collector's checklists.

If you are ready to invest a little money to this hobby I recommend the True Utility Keychain pen. It is compact, goes on your keyring, and the pen is snapped on to the lid very securely so it does not fall off of the ring like some keychain pens. It is about 10 bucks.

I'm too cold to think of anything. A box of squishies arrived the other day (stocking stuffers) and they are SOOOO CUTE and so squishy I can totally understand now why each kid has asked for some. Not sure if they meant these squishies or the stinky foam ones, but these are the ones they're getting. The closer we get to Christmas the more I get the "Well, they better learn to live with it" attitude, lol.

Play dough, slime, slinkies, and squeeze balls!

Play dough is probably the cheapest and easiest to obtain out of all of these products. Also, this amazon box has a lot of things my therapist has in her office to fidget with during sessions. It’s ~$18 but it has a lot of good products in it!

  1. Go check your lost and found, it's better than abandoning the possibility of finding it.

  2. Why not just put a keyring around 3 or so of the middle coils on a spiral notebook?

  3. There are plenty of keychain pen options to choose from, see below.

  4. Never leave the house without a knife and a light.

  5. You may want to consider pocket carry for all this just because nobody I've known has ever liked the jangle-jangle, and you'll want to be able to remove items easily.

    Affordable pen option:

Sonya, Your Momma wouldn't tell you this but there's a lot of mean people and most will only do mean things to get a reaction out of you. Staying calm and slightly amused will piss them off and they'll stop being mean. Also, you don't have to do everything to please your friends. Stay true to yourself and do whatever makes you happy.

Something that every 9 year old wants? Apparently slime and squishes.

u/masterpi · 2 pointsr/gadgets

I keep this telescoping pen on my keychain.

u/muzikfreec · 2 pointsr/geocaching

You can find a slightly lower price on Amazon. I prefer the telescoping version. It is not cheap, but totally worth it in my opinion. Extremely solid construction that holds up next to my keys and change, and I never find myself accidentally inking the inside of my pocket. https://www.amazon.com/dp/B000VC3FBS/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_i_uwirDbR6A4FMV

I know not everyone would consider spending that much on a pen, but there are cheaper options that will fit in a pocket or on your keychain. Here's one I used for a while that is only $9. I liked it, but the thinness of the barrel made it difficult for me to write legibly. YMMV. https://www.amazon.com/dp/B007IOHPKY/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_i_xtirDbT4KKDY1

Sure! There are a ton of great keychain accessories out there but the criteria for mine are all items must:

1: Be < 2" (Preferably 1.5")

2: Fit in my pockets comfortably (jeans)

3: Be used at least once every 3 months
(Ambu Pouch excluded)

Accessories used Most - Least

The Freekey Sytem is the foundation of the keyring and is one of those products that is so elegant in its simplicity and functionality that it seems like it should have been invented years ago.

The SOG Straight Edge Key Knife comes sharp and has held an edge pretty well over the last few months. With its tiny blade it's not going to replace your Ka-Bar anytime soon but I can almost garuntee that you will use it more frequently.

The Swiss+ Tech 6 in 1 Utility Key coupled with The Infora Key Multitool seems to be gaining ground to overtake the SOG Key Knife as top tool in the line up with flat and Phillips screwdriver heads, bottle opener, and serrated blade.

The Streamlight Nano LED Flashlight is an awesome addition to the gang and probobly the one that has saved my ass the most, there are too many times I've wasted time looking for a light source in the dark.

The 2.0 64 GB Kingston Data Traveler SE9 USB drive. Reasonable speed coupled with great durability. The cast in keyhole eliminates the possibilty of losing the USB from a weak tether and defiantly holds a perminent place in my top 5 keychain accesories. Along with its basic utility I keep a file named "If Found: Reward" on it with my information in case I lose my key ring.

The True Utility TelePen telescoping keychain pen is one of those items that doesent get the everyday recognition the others do but is totally fucking clutch when you do need it. I owe a couple side projects I've picked up to this pen, partly because of the writing aspect but more from it as a talking piece.

The InCharge Ultra Portable Charging Cable is a cool little accessory that I thought would get the boot initially but saved my ass when I was in transit and my buddy only had an Apple cable with his charger.

The True Utility FireStash Keyring Lighter is the only item on the list that I haven't actually "needed" but will probobly keep anyway because fire is such a basic necessity and if I ever DO need it I'm probobly going to name my kids True and Utility.

The Ambu Res-Cue keychain CPR mask rounds out the list but might be the most important. Along with it being being a valuable lifesaving/self protection asset it's also super useful for locating my keys. I once read something about humans being able to see more shades of red than any other color and that our minds are geared to "ook out for it. Whether that's true or not it's always the first thing I see when I misplace them and because of its shape it stops my keys from going between the seats.

I didn't have a ton of time to type this up because I'm on my phone at work but I hope this helps!

I have an idea for my first robotics project! I want to make a random number generator out of one of these pin art toys. Specifically, I would use it for D&D. My idea is to use two seven segment displays, where each piece of the display will move vertically up or down depending on what number is displaying. So the pin art toy would be laying down horizontally and the seven segment display pieces would move vertically from underneath to cause a number to display in the pin art.

Here is my question: is there a better way to move the pieces of the seven segment display other than using fourteen separate linear servos?

If I bought fourteen these small linear servos, the total would be $95+ (USD) after shipping. I've got most of a materials list completed and all the servos make up ~60% of the cost of this project. I would be very appreciative of other ideas for how to more efficiently move each of the segments individually. Or if there are more affordable linear servos out there that I haven't found, I would also be thankful!
