Wait a minute. The movie came out in 2016 and the blu ray came out late 2017. I remember I bought it the second it was available from Amazon.
Comes with sub and dub.

Edit: I did a bit of research and it seems like they fucked you guys over in North America :( damn!

u/Cmeloz33 · 70 pointsr/marvelstudios

You can find all three phases on amazon. Links below. I bought them and plan on binge watching until endgame. Enjoy!

Always thought was weird they don’t have a phase 1/2/3 box set. Esp now that rereleasing them all in 4k

edit: thanks for the comments guys, here they are
Phase 1 - Amazon
Phase 2 - Amazon
Phase 3 Part 1 - Amazon
Region free but UK box looks like if that matters to you. Personally I'll only rebuy if they release in 4k since I own ~half of them

I've been following this release for a while now. I believe the bluray lacks 5.1 sound. For anyone interested, the article links to a good sale by amazon.

I want it... I need it... but my wallet can't take it.

Oh well, at least the movie is cheap, right?

Ahhh to be an Eva fan. Fucking beautiful.

It depends how much you care about accuracy, but Sony TVs tend to be fairly accurate out of the box with only a few basic settings changes (you can find them on our review). For these varying room conditions you can adjust the 'Brightness' on the X900E.

There are a few ways to adjust the image yourself, but these won't be as accurate as a calibration with 'real' measurements. A popular example is the Spears and Munsil calibration disk. There are other free test patterns you can use a PC or Blu-ray player to send though.

Homecoming is in this box set so... maybe??

I don't really know people here very well, I pick /u/Yokuo because they're one of the super cool people that greeted me in my intro and I noticed that he/she has Avatar: Book One in their "most wanted" wishlist. Obviously, it's not the complete series, but I know that any Avatar fan would love to have their own collection and you have to start somewhere. Avatar: The Last Airbender is quite possibly the greatest animated series out there.

Kindness is key :)

Edit: oh also hooray for upvotes!

u/SuperMoonKnight · 8 pointsr/GODZILLA

A few films I would check out:

  • Terror of MechaGodzilla is one of the best Showa films. It has an amazing soundtrack, and has an interesting story and a cool 1v2 battle with Godzilla, MechaGodzilla, and the newcomer, Titanosaurus, who has an amazing roar.

  • Godzilla vs Biollante is one of my favorite as well. Biollante may look like an abomination, but they make the creature seem "beautiful" in a sense, maybe precious is the better word. The story is very good, and the Biollante "suit" is really convincing even to this day. The human characters are interesting as well.

  • Godzilla vs Destoroyah is...really, really good. I wouldn't watch this one first, leave this one as one of the last ones you want to see. Very emotional story, very dark, and not really uplifting in the slightest.

  • GMK All Monsters All-Out Attack: Fantastic film. Godzilla is the villian this time around, while King Ghidorah, typically a villian, is considered a good kaiju. Good effects, a scary Godzilla, and a well paced story.

  • Godzilla 2014: A good film to start off with. It has its strengths and weaknesses, but it's a good start regardless.

  • Godzilla 1954: Obviously

    Films I would avoid:

  • Godzilla vs SpaceGodzilla: This film has horrible pacing issues and a story that isn't interesting. While I found SpaceGodzilla interesting in the games, he isn't interesting at all in the film.

  • Godzilla vs the Sea Monster: This movie is just...meh. I sometimes forget it exists.

  • Godzilla vs Megaguirus: Another meh film. Megaguirus is a cool kaiju, but it just doesn't do anything for me.

Films that you should watch with friends for some laughs:

  • Godzilla All Monsters Attack: This film is all over the place. It really feels like a film that had a production team with a motto of "Hey, why not? It's not like we're trying"! It's hilarious on how weird it is.

  • Godzilla 1998: Yeah, this film is basically nothing but the usual 90s cliches we've seen before, now with more Godzilla, sorry, Zilla. Most of the Simpsons cast is in it though, so that's a plus...right?

  • Godzilla Final Wars: I don't think I should say much for this one. The craziest Godzilla film you will ever watch.

  • King Kong vs Godzilla is great for the sole fact it's King Kong vs Godzilla, East vs West. It's not the best in terms of story, but it's cool to see both of them on screen together for the first...and not last...time.

If you need help finding these films, here are some links for some packs on amazon that can fill up your collection pretty quickly.

  • Godzilla Collection (https://www.amazon.com/Godzilla-Collection-Vol-Yuriko-Hoshi/dp/B000VXWK86/ref=sr_1_6?s=movies-tv&ie=UTF8&qid=1468168538&sr=1-6&keywords=godzilla)

  • The entire Millennium series, with Godzilla vs MechaGodzilla 2 (https://www.amazon.com/Godzilla-Collection-Vol-Yuriko-Hoshi/dp/B000VXWK86/ref=sr_1_6?s=movies-tv&ie=UTF8&qid=1468168538&sr=1-6&keywords=godzilla)

  • Some Hensei films, and Mothra films (https://www.amazon.com/Godzilla-Destroyah-Spacegodzilla-Ghidorah-Rebirth/dp/B013P6PEUG/ref=sr_1_12?s=movies-tv&ie=UTF8&qid=1468168538&sr=1-12&keywords=godzilla)

I hope this helped in some way. Have fun watching them. If you have anymore questions, don't hesitate to ask.

EDIT: I should add that Godzilla vs Gigan, and Godzilla vs Megalon are two films that are great to watch with friends as well.

EDIT 2: Heck, watch all the Godzilla films with your friends, each one has something special to enjoy.
u/CHEEZYSPAM · 8 pointsr/GODZILLA

Amazon is going to be your best option. There are no large retailers that carry them (unless somehow you get really lucky) and most used shops only have the American '98 out the ass, but some will carry Godzilla 2000 or the occasional Final Wars (from my experience, they're still kinda rare).

The most popular starting point is usually [the Godzilla Collection] (http://www.amazon.com/The-Godzilla-Collection-Yuriko-Hoshi/dp/B000VXWK86/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1374173466&sr=8-1&keywords=godzilla). It includes 6 of the Showa series and is a great deal considering the price.

Godzilla VS. Biollante is DIRT cheap and is a really good movie from the Heisei era IMO. The rest of the Heisei series can be purchased as double packs for a reasonable price. However, Godzilla '84 (the 1st of the Heisei) has never been released on DVD outside of Japan.

After that you can pretty much collect the entire Millennium series for a reasonable price. None of them are in rare status and you should be able to pick them up with ease for less than $10.

Other than that, there are some OOP DVDs from the Showa series that are 1. extremely hard to find or 2. really expensive.

Renewal is Japanese only I think, so if you want the dub, the best way would probably be to get the Platinum Collection for the series, and there is a box set containing both Death & Rebirth and EoE. Be prepared to shell out some major cash for both of these though.

Additional notes...

Basic Background

  • All GitS stories start out as abstract and confusing -- they essentially drop you into the middle of a mission and are set in the future, amidst a bunch of tech and terminology that you need to learn and understand on the fly. We're talking spy, cloack-and-dagger, intrigue, conspiracy, mystery. This is a good thing.

  • The movies are dense and the series take some time to weave together. It helps to be patient and pay attention, both to the dialogue and to the details that you see in both the foreground and background.

  • The Matrix was heavily influenced by the first movie, and there are even direct, frame-for-frame visual shout outs to the first GitS film in The Matrix.

  • If you enjoy sci-fi like Children of Men, Blade Runner, The Zero Theorem or even Her, Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind or the Bourne series then you're in for a treat.

  • Ghost in the Shell, as a whole, is the visual successor to Neuromancer, by William Gibson.

    Recommended Viewing Order

Start with the first film. It's the foundation for everything else.

  • The first film is an adaptation that differs from the manga, so if you like the movie and then go back and read the manga you won't be slogging through the exact same thing twice.

  • The original came out on Blu-ray [Amazon] only two days ago (yay!), and the new version will be of much better video and audio quality than the initial 1995 version (although the subtitles are apparently not as good).

  • The dubbed voice acting is, for a change, pretty great, so feel free to watch in English or Japanese. The subtitles might be worth using, as the English dub isn't as clearly worded as the original text (if I remember correctly).

  • After you watch the first film, check this out.

Next, I'd watch the two Stand Alone Complex series

  • Both are fantastic. If you watch the first movie first you'll know all or most of the characters. The pacing is much easier to digest and you get to know the characters a lot better. The story is still abstract, twisting and turning... but it's fun to unravel the mystery with our heroes. Makes for great binge watching.

You can watch the second movie or the four Arise episodes in any order.

  • The second movie is probably the most dense, convoluted story in the series. It also has the best animation and is a lot of fun. Now that I think more about it, I think I'd save this for last. But you can really watch it whenever you want, so long as you've finished the first film (it won't otherwise make much sense).

  • Arise is an origin story reboot. The characters have different backgrounds and how they meet is much different than in the original story. There are a number of homages or references to the original movie as well. Compared to the rest of the GitS stuff, Arise felt like lighter fare in terms of its complexity and sophistication. I enjoyed Arise, but this little mini-series is probably my least favorite content within the GitS universe.

Primer Information About the Wider GitS world (Mild Spoilers)

The below is written in a block so as to make provide optical camouflage against accidentally catching spoilers if you don't want to read them.

The goal of this section is to help ease you into understanding the politics and organization of the GitS world.

The GitS world is set in Japan, but there are also international players. Japan has gone to war against other (made up) nations (sorta like Kazakstan), and we meet some of the ex-soldiers. Cybernetic technology is now well integrated into society, but was most extensively developed, weaponized and used by the military. At the most basic level, almost everyone now has brain implants. These implants are the foundation of most of the philosophical discussion in the GitS world. They're also the foundation for most of the crime, communication and investigation. Some people only have those basic neural implants, while others are entirely or almost entirely cybernetic. Much of the philosophical discussion, then, is about the line between the physical body and the soul (ghost), about what makes us individual and unique.

Americans are not the good guys (in many respects, the series extrapolates on how WWII influenced and continues to influence Japan's development and national identity). The Japanese government is divided into self-contained groups: ministries and sections. We follow Section 9. On the surface these groups all work together, but there's really a lot of backstabbing and secret warfare between the groups.

I think that's enough to get you started.

tl;dr: Definitely watch - one of my favorite creations of everything of all time. Enjoy!

There are the "phase box sets" That range in the $60-75 range

Phase 1 Set

Phase 2 Set

Phase 3, Pt.1 Set

At the current price these are listed (these fluctuate quite a bit, if you're patient you can get these a bit cheaper) you're looking at right around the $200 mark... assuming there will be a similar package for Phase 3, pt2 (Black Panther - SM:FFH) add another $70 for that set. So all in all you're looking at $250-300 for the full set of 23 films when it's all said and done if you go this route.

(These sets also have slightly more expensive versions as well that have some collective cards/nicer packaging)

I've got all three of these sets, and they've been pretty good for me. Each disc has the original features of the regular blu-ray release.. There is an additional bonus disc for each set, but it kind of sucks to be honest.... Still though.. If you haven't been collecting all the films as they've been released, and wanted to get them in one big haul, this is certainty an option, and I'm really happy with the ones I purchased.

Speaking in hyperbole the whole time, especially referring to them as "MRAssholes", doesn't make you right or even make me wanna take you seriously. I hope you realize that.

You are literally proving a point that they can't be taken seriously because when they try to bring up any of those points they get shouted down exactly like you are doing right now with strawmen, red herrings, and ad-hominem attacks. You are literally a prime example of the problem.

Bringing up single events/persons that you think represent a movement doesn't mean that they ARE the representation of a movement. A majority of men's rights are actively trying to solve the issues they face. But you just wanna shout them down because why? They threaten another movement that wants to what, remain the sole victims of a society? That's sad. I don't care and I'm sure they don't either.

May I suggest watching a documentary on this very subject. I quite enjoyed it. https://www.amazon.com/dp/B06XGY67WQ

Buy the show when it comes out on BD. Seriously, that'll make them more money than they'd make on advertising to you, and you'll get the benefit of watching it in a format you like now and supporting future shows in the same vein. Plus, you'll get to rewatch the whole thing over again without TV station over-branding on the screen.

You can pre-Order it on Amazon now for US$54.

Well then, you'd be surprised to learn that child support and other safety nets for single mothers have nothing to do with the child and everything to do with how society views men as disposable, walking wallets which are "not essential to the raising of children beyond supplying a percentage of their paychecks to the mother of their children"

If it takes two to create a child, then why do an overwhelming majority of women win custody battles? If the money is for the child, then why does the money go directly into the hands of the mother?

The real answer to OPs question is this:

  1. Society and family court view men as non-essential in the raising of children beyond supplying money to the mother
  2. Society and family court still operate under the assumption that women do not have the same work opportunities as men (which is not even the case anymore today)

I agree with you that it takes two people to make a child and that responsibility should be 50/50, however that is NOT reality, not even fucking close. Women have AN OVERWHELMING advantage when it comes to not only preventing pregnancy, but the options that they have after pregnancy, the options they have in divorce and family court. And why? "her body, her choice", the feminist agenda that has brainwashed society.

"Her body, her choice", yeah her fucking choice alright, she chose to have sex as well.

I would LOVE for you to read that 68 page article with its 350 sources to back up it's claims, but I doubt you'd be open minded enough. If you want to take the lazy way out, you could spend just two hours watching this, but maybe even that is asking too much.

    >Because you are responsible for paying for the life you created you gross fucking moron

I'd love for you to say that to the faces of the tens of millions of fathers who've lost their custody battle, being denied the opportunity to care for their children

There is one other release, the Holiday edition, a repackaging of the platinum collection. It has no advantages over the platinum collection and is pretty hard to find. Also, your link to "a very silvery version" didn't work for me but I assume it is the platinum edition with the aluminum box.

You heard right that the platinum collection has better audio and picture. The Perfect collection has no remastering so it looks noticeably worse. Some scenes have shaky or blurry visuals. Platinum collection did a lot to fix this issues.

As far as the different platinum releases go I recommend the slim/thinpack version. All around I would say it's the best release. It has the best audio and visual, the directors cuts for eps. 21-24, however there are zero bonus features. This isn't too big of a deal as the bonus features on other releases are things like clean OP, trailers, english commentary on a few episodes, so nothing necessary. Also the slim version seems to be the easiest to still find.

Hope this helps, feel free to ask anything else.

Imagine a movie where the script makes no sense, whatsoever. Imagine a film where you're certain that they picked the actors off the street at random to play the roles. Imagine that some of the lines are so bad, so nonsensical, so bizarre that you wonder what the director was thinking when writing this. Imagine that there are scenes that literally serve no purpose to the movie. Imagine awkward twists, plot devices that are brought up and then instantly dropped seconds after they're presented, and an actor change mid-film, with no hint at it whatsoever, leaving you to wonder who the random guy in the film is. Imagine realizing that you could hire some of the best minds in Hollywood to purposely create a god-awful movie, and their best attempts couldn't match it. Imagine, as vividly as you can, being infuriated at the notion that you spent nearly 100 minutes of your life watching what you earnestly believe was the worst piece of garbage to ever be captured on film.

Then, imagine your realization that not only does its horribleness compel you to watch it again, but you are now among the surprisingly large group of individuals who are fans of what many consider to be the greatest worst movie of all time.

Welcome...to The Room.

calibration settings aren't an objective thing, they vary based on your model and environmental conditions. using simple calibration patterns and tuning even just brightness/contrast and saturation will yield better, more accurate results than copying values.

personally i recommend grabbing this disc: http://www.amazon.com/Disney-WOW-World-Wonder-Blu-ray/dp/B0045ASBLG/

u/rizoyt · 3 pointsr/xboxone

Calibrate your TV using this:

http://www.amazon.com/Disney-WOW-World-Wonder-Blu-ray/dp/B0045ASBLG

It's easy to set up, just make sure you take ~30 min to properly set everything. Depending on how much potential your set has, it'll feel like you're upgrading your tv.

EDIT: Get the blu-ray version, don't skimp out

u/davdev · 3 pointsr/hometheater

Get this and it will get you 98% there. Sure, there may be more a professional calibration can do, but that will run you a few hundred dollars. Try the disney disk first.

u/JediGameFreak · 3 pointsr/DestinyTheGame

Have you calibrated your TV? Rarely are the out of box settings very good. Just google HDTV calibration and there should be some online sources and/or blu rays. I use this for all my TVs and it works like a charm.

Batman Dark Knight with the Bat Pod. Not too overly expensive but I still want it.

Kick Ass Limited Edition which was UK release. Chacken is actually helping me track this down for a reasonable price.

Watchmen the Ultimate Cut of course.

This is on my list But more importantly I would rather have the castle that the french got for the first five movies.

She bought the Limited Edition boxset from Costco a few years back for $300.

Pretty sure it's well over $1000CAD used now. She says it was the best investment she ever made.

I can't say for sure, as I don't own this version, but a lot of the reviews seem to says it's much worse than that.

u/-Niernen · 3 pointsr/anime

>their pricetags can have drastic differences anyway.

Thats the thing. The prices can be wildly different. I don't have any actual examples of the top of my head, but lets say sometimes you might see two series with similar prices for the regular edition, and similar bonuses for the special edition, but one special edition will eb $20 more than the other. I'd say things like stickers and similar things are not worth it, but bonuses like behind the scenes, OST, and similar can be pretty cool, as can some other merchandise. Do you ahve any specific ones you were looking at and wanted to know if they were worth it? Do you have any specific examples?

For CowBoy Bebop, the difference between the regular and the Amazon exclusive is the Amazon exclusive has both the Bluray and DVD and also: Limited Edition clamshell art box, 140 page black and white art book and 48 page full-color art book. It doesn't seem like a bad deal.

u/phus · 3 pointsr/Toonami

If I remember correctly its about 120$. amazon has cheaper version for 90 (was on sale for 80) http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00MMOZ1SS/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o03_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

it is also worth noting that both of these editions had a limited release. I think the funimation one was less than 50,000. the amazon was 100,000 ish

u/wobernein · 3 pointsr/niceguys

From my personal experience, it was because I came from feminism and believed that feminism would also want to tackle male issues. Turns out not to be the case but its hard to identify with wanting equality for women AND men and trying to find allies in the feminist movement. Turns out feminism doesn't like that either and sees it as a distraction of real issues.

The other part about activism is that mens rights is still relatively new and has met with heavy resistance so it has had a hard time gaining traction.

If you would like to learn more, I would suggest the only documentary on male issues and its challenges.

u/Aachaa · 2 pointsr/anime

If you aren't able to find a way to watch it using this list, the only way to legally watch it is by purchasing the DVDs/BRs. That being said, there are many other more questionable options for watching it online that shouldn't be too difficult to dig up using Google.

u/DangeresqueIII · 2 pointsr/Animesuggest

When ADV originally released Evangelion on DVD, it looked really crappy due to bad transfer. Then in 2005 they released the platinum edition that looked much better due to a better transfer. This edition also had director cuts for 4 episodes that help explain things/feed into the End of Evangelion Movie. Sadly the Evangelion Platinum edition is rare, and very expensive. New its going for about 400, and used 100. I would check craigslist, I picked up my box set a few months ago for 30 bucks. Otherwise, I would just probably download it. Also, while the new movies are good, I would recommend that you watch the TV series first, then the End of Evangelion movie, then the new movies.

u/sunchops · 2 pointsr/Random_Acts_Of_Amazon

Oh boy, scene from my favorite movie... Too many movies to count. Movies and music are my thing, I'm going to university for them. Anyway, I'd have to say that as of right now the most memorable scene from a movie that I've watched has to be in a French film called "The Science of Sleep."

In the particular scene I am thinking of, the main character is shaving and cuts himself. He then throws his electric razor and it comes alive, and "crawls" a little bit. He then appears at work with oversized hands working on illustrations as papers begin to fly around the office as if there is a wind. He then fights his coworkers, runs into his bosses office to confront him where he catches him having an affair with an employee. The boss stands up and yells at the main character, the main character reaches into his pocket and pulls out the razor from before, it has turned into a spider which he immediately drops and it runs over to the boss causing him to fall out of his seat. He then falls out of the office window. The main character runs over to the window only to see everything outside is in a quaint artsy craftsy style, with toy cars and pop up book style buildings. He then takes over the office and has an affair with the employee. He jumps out the window and begins to swim through the air as if he is under water. He then wakes up. All of it was just a dream.

That's just a rough memory of the scene, but I think I got most of it. This movie is brilliant, and that scene has stuck with me more so than any other scene from any other film I've ever watched. I don't know quite why, I guess its the sort of surreal feel of the scene, and well the movie as a whole. I've always enjoyed the things that are bizarre, and fresh. This movie is just a really unique idea. I just found it thoroughly enjoyable. I'd suggest giving it a look if you get a chance.

This is what I would enjoy very much if I were to win. I know it is an awfully done movie, but I can't help but laugh everytime I watch it. It's so funny, especially when watching with friends.

Sono Heya is a kind of obscure anime that came out in 2003 by an independent studio. It is a romantic tragedy anime about a banker, named Jounni, who has a perfect life with his fiancee in San Francisco. I think it might be the first anime to take place there. He has many friends, earns a lot of money, and has a fiancee, Risa, that loves him, or so he thinks. One day, while Jounni is at work, some NTR stuff goes on with Jounni's best friend Maruku. As the movie goes on, Jounni's life gets worse and worse. Several dark themes are brought up, like cancer, gang violence, drugs, and even suicide that really broke new ground. You can tell how carefully the director and the VAs were when making this. You can tell how enthusiastic and how much effort was put into this. The actors, they show emotion. The best scene, in my opinion, is when Jounni has to deal with false accusations of abuse, and finds his sanity deteriorating. It also has multiple uncensored sex scenes that are about en par with the sex scenes in Devilman: Crybaby. I wasn't really sure what the demographic was, since it's just such a masterpiece, until I read a book about how this was made called Saigai Geijutsuka. It follows the two main Voice Actors, the ones for Jounni and Maruku, who are best friends in real life and have been living together since the late 90's. I also found out from this book that Jounni's VA not only acted, but directed, wrote, and produced the film as well. His name is Tommi Wishiou. Despite the anime being critically acclaimed, it never did very well financially, and Tommi wasn't really hired for anything. So, I encourage you to buy the DVD from this site, since it's not on Crunchyroll.

If anyone else has seen this anime, let me know because I'd really like some suggestions for similar anime.

Is it okay to enter more than one and let you pick? I like so many movies its hard to choose!

I love movies because...

So, the reason i want these is because me and my sisters used to watch them all the time and it was one of the only times we got along and had a lot of fun. It brings such good memories and we always have fun when we watch them!

Phantom opera

Robin hood men in tights

The Princess Bride

Monty python and the holy grail

(note: Regular DVD of any of those are fine, i just saw the blueray first)

Me and my mom LOVE godzilla so this would be perfect!

And these are som of my favorite movies of all time!
Moulin Rouge

Lord of the rings box set (Im looking at the used version)

And this because i havent seen it and people say its great!

Again, feel free to choose which come in bluray and which you want to get DVD, im not picky!

Thanks again and sorry if me posting a lot of them causes a problem :D

u/WolfSpiderBuddy · 2 pointsr/GODZILLA

I would say that depends on what you have access to, and how much you're going to jump into it. I will say from the beginning that there is no consensus on any of this, so don't take any reply as the gospel.

The most obvious answer is to start at the beginning - Gojira, the 1954 Japanese original. Many folks say it's the best ever made.

Another option would be to start at the other end, the best "modern" movies before the new one. I would recommend either Godzilla against Mechagodzilla from 2002, or its sequel, Godzilla: Tokyo SOS from 2003.

If you're ready to really "commit" to watching several movies, for the very low price of $21 you can get this boxed set from Amazon that has seven movies, including the first one (Japanese and American versions) and you'll get the classic monsters that will be popping up in the G14 sequels: Ghidorah, Mothra, and Rodan.

My personal favorite Godzilla movie is Return of Godzilla from 1984 (sometimes called Godzilla 1985 because it was released in the US in 1985). The problem is that it's very hard to find, and you shouldn't wait to jump into the movies until you can find this one.

u/Mark316 · 2 pointsr/GODZILLA

First of all, don't pirate anything. There are only a couple that you could really justify pirating, but there's no reason to start with those. If you're truly interested and want to support Godzilla, pay for the movies.

A good starting point is the DVD The Godzilla Collection. It contains the following movies:

  • Godzilla (1954)
  • Godzilla Raids Again (1955)
  • Mothra vs. Godzilla (1964)
  • Ghidorah, the Three-Headed Monster (1964)
  • Invasion of Astro-Monster (1965)
  • All Monsters Attack (1969)
  • Terror of Mechagodzilla (1975)

In addition to the Japanese versions, all the U.S. edited cuts are included as well. However, I believe the original Godzilla is cropped to be widescreen, so if you want the original aspect ration, I suggest the Criterion release available on Blu-ray or DVD.

A good place to start for some of the more recent movies is The Toho Godzilla Collection, Volumes 1 & 2. This set contains the following:

  • Godzilla vs. King Ghidorah (1991)
  • Godzilla vs. Mothra, aka Godzilla and Mothra: The Battle for Earth (1992)
  • Godzilla vs. Mechagodzilla II (1993)
  • Godzilla vs. SpaceGodzilla (1994)
  • Godzilla vs. Destoroyah (1995)
  • Rebirth of Mothra (1996)
  • Rebirth of Mothra II (1997)
  • Godzilla 2000: Millennium (1999)
  • Godzilla vs. Megaguirus (2000)
  • Godzilla, Mothra and King Ghidorah: Giant Monsters All-Out Attack (2001)
  • Godzilla Against Mechagodzilla (2002)
  • Godzilla: Tokyo S.O.S. (2003)
  • Godzilla: Final Wars (2004)

Full disclosure, I think this collection is only on DVD, but all of these movies are also available on Blu-ray in various singe- and multi-disc packs. But if you don't care about Blu-ray, this is a great set.

This doesn't cover every Godzilla movie, but those two box sets are both pretty good ways to start, I think. If you have questions about specific movies or anything else let me know.

That eclipse set is really interesting as a historical document of how the most prestigious film company in Japan dealt with the rise of Honda and Tsubaraya's hit machine, but they're not as entertaining as Godzilla or Gamera. Plus that Godzilla set has commentaries from criterion level film historians like David Kalat (Mabuse commentaries) and Stuart Galbraith (essay on Seven Samurai) on why these types of movies matter.

u/Sketchy19 · 2 pointsr/GODZILLA

I think this and this are a great way to get your collection started. If you are looking to do Blu-Ray these double feature bundles are good too. Then just hunt down the rest. This one has a lot of the earlier ones. I've purchased individually because the sets weren't always around, I'm thinking of upgrading to blu-ray but i still love running across the ones I'm missing in places like thrift shops. Anyways. Good luck.

If it's anything like the version I bought (and, since this is something like a re-release of that, I would suspect it is), there was a Japanese track and two English subtitle options (one was the hearing impared option.) I popped it in my laptop last night to double-check. About the only unusual deal there was that they had audio and subtitle options in different menus, but this is only unusual from the anime DVD perspective.

Actually, looking into things just a little further, Amazon is reusing comments/score from all three releases. This means that criticisms of the first non-Disney release of Totoro are showing up here. Evidence is in the review date of one of the individuals (jwk4) claiming no subtitles, etc ; January 31, 2003. This clearly indicates it's for the 2002 non-Disney release, where-as we are talking about the 2006 and upcoming 2010 releases.

So, I worked as an HDTV engineer for five years and can tell you about my experiences.

In order to achieve market differentiation and tv selling features, TVs (at least the ones from my company…) will ship with a bunch of image processing effects that, frankly, are gimmicks. Without "game mode" on input lag will be increased as the TV applies effects before displaying the image. (It should be noted that no HD signals--including those produced by games--are engineered anticipating to be processed a second time by another device. They expect just being displayed on a well-calibrated display without any other processing.)

My two cents: if you're concerned about image quality, start with a really good calibration disc (like http://www.amazon.com/Disney-WOW-World-Wonder-Blu-ray/dp/B0045ASBLG/) with game mode set to on. At the conclusion, the image displayed will be the closest match your tv can produce to what the content creator intended AND with the smallest amount of input lag. If you don't like it, turn game mode off and play knowing you've made an informed decision and explored your options fully. :)

Edit: game mode doesn't affect 60fps--you're still going to get 60 (or more, if you have a tv that adds frames to simulate faster refresh…) frames either way, but with it on, the time that the PS4 produces the image to the time it shows up on your screen very well may be increased. And I game with game mode on. In answer to your questions, which I forgot in my original reply. :)

As far as watching it online, Ghost in the Shell Arise Borders 1 and 2 are available for streaming on Funimations streaming service and Netflix (US and Canada), Stand alone complex is on Hulu (1st and 2nd gig), while the other versions are not available for legal streaming as far as I know.

Watch the original first. There's the classic, then the New Blu-Ray release Both fairly priced for their animation quality.

You can watch Innocence next, if you liked the philosophical aspects of the first movie a lot, otherwise it's skippable.

Then Stand Alone Complex season 1, Season 2, and afterwards, Solid State Society if Stand Alone complex left a bad taste in your mouth at the end of the series. Both are priced fairly considering how much content they contain.

After that, you can watch Arise if you enjoyed the action parts of it a lot more. It's pricey, but I enjoyed it thoroughly. Do be aware Arise is a prequel to the series.

The order of shows in Chronological order is: Arise, then Stand Alone Complex, then the original movie, then Ghost in the Shell: Innocence.

All have nudity, sexual imagery, violence, and strong language.

Your person seems to really like edgy and highly dramatic pieces with a scifi or fantasy flair. That's been my favorite for 15 years! A lot of these are a bit older; I am taking the gamble that with as many newer pieces listed, your person hasn't watched a lot of backlog, and therefore may have missed some really good shit.

Ghost in the Shell is a cyberpunk classic. Older, yes, but for anyone who likes drama and scifi, this is a good choice. It focuses on a classic mind experiment: if you can move your brain freely among cybernetic parts and bodies, what is really "you"?

Steins;Gate is what instantly springs to mind for someone who also likes Psycho Pass. And I mean instantly. Fans of one almost invariably love the other. A tightly-plotted time travel thriller.

Revolutionary Girl Utena is a bit older, often controversial, and an absolute work of art. There's a strong chance your giftee is a girl based on the other series they like, but even if not, Utena is still a solid choice. Just be careful on this; sending it to a conservative person could backfire badly. I rather doubt that is the case with Attack on Titan and Shiki, but just to be safe. It's strange and beautiful...and stylish beyond all doubt.

Black Lagoon is anime's answer to a Hollywood big budget action movie. Comedic, violent, and unforgettable, it deserves a far wider audience than it's had. Almost every anime fan I know who's seen it has loved it.

Akira is without a doubt one of the most famous anime movies to ever be created. Animated without CG in the 1980s, the quality of its hand-drawn special effects has yet to be equalled by almost any other production to this day. For someone used to today's slick computer assisted animation, it's still mindblowing. Akira is often credited with being just as important as Pokemon and Dragon Ball Z and Sailor Moon in starting the anime boom of the 1990s, and this is a very nice edition.

Also in the classic scifi category we have Serial Experiments Lain, a show whose points on technology and the internet and the singularity still ring true today. Moody and thought-provoking with masterful use of color and a fantastic soundtrack.

Literally no adult-targeted anime is as famous and well-beloved as Cowboy Bebop. This space western with the jazz soundtrack is a perennial favorite on Cartoon Network Adult Swim, is often suspected as a major influence behind Firefly, and is one of the most popular anime in the US of all time... And it's hitting bluray this month.

Summer Wars should probably come with a bluray device as a tech test. It's that beautiful. A tale of virtual reality and the family and friends behind the characters, Summer Wars is an unforgettable movie which, despite being intensely Japanese, deserves a slot on any videophile's shelf.

My total wildcard pick is Mushishi. Beautiful and dream-like, like a series of 25 minute oases from ordinary life. If this is in fact a slice of life, these timeless Japanese almost fairy tales are like no life you've seen. Some call it slow and overhyped. I call it perfection. At any rate, this isn't at all what I'd get as an only gift; it's more a wildcard filler for a $20 other series. If you want my actual top pick.....

Baccano! is my final and top pick. It's really hard to go wrong with this. This rollicking action anime about immortal Prohibition-era Mafiosi in the United States is one of the best and most underrated anime of all time. Humor, violent action, mystery, drama, good characters, good animation, good music... It has them all. It's chronically overshadowed by its more popular sister series Durarara, and that makes me sad. But Durarara isn't easily available outside streaming, and this glorious madcap piece of anime is. Plus it has at least one theme in common with everything your person listed liking. You know what to do.

I'm so sorry to hear your child has been taken away from you. As a woman, it was very enlightening to watch The Red Pill Movie to see what men go through in divorce, how they rarely get the children. Every feminist should watch it, it's the story that is not told about men's issues.

I wish the best for you and your child in life. The only way to go from here is up, right?

Yes, exactly this. Do you know most of our debt is to the (private) Federal Reserve for printing out US dollars and charging the country interest for those created-out-of-thin-air dollars?

I'm fairly certain that most of these have options in the main menu to change between the dub and sub. It lists both the English and Japanese VA for the cast as well so it's probably safe to assume that it has both.

If you want to be really sure there's an amazon listing for the same price that has all the audio options listed.

I am currently rewatching everything with my wife, wich is crazy because she is not that into Marvel Movies. Next one is Ant Man this week. We watch on Blu Ray so we can see extras, featurettes, deleted scenes and bloopers. I bought all the new BR sets and they are quite satsifying (I even put the little GOTG 1 poster that comes with one set in my daughter's rooms because she is in love with Rocket Raccon)

So yeah, you can say I am an addict too.

The closest I'm aware of are the new Phase 1, Phase 2, and Phase 3 boxes they released a couple of months ago.

Phase 1- https://www.amazon.com/dp/B075YLXYMS/?coliid=IRKP1SX5G37B&colid=3A4RAUZUV1G3W&psc=0&ref_=lv_ov_lig_dp_it

u/CurryMustard · 2 pointsr/Marvel

It makes more sense to buy the box sets in phases

Phase 1

Phase 2

Edit: upon closer inspection, these are british/international but they are not region locked as far as I can tell

u/itmonkey78 · 2 pointsr/marvelstudios

I'm in the UK and the box sets will cost me £188 ($230) for the blurays on Amazon.co.uk. Price goes up to £275 if I want the 4k versions of the Phase 3 box sets (phase 1 & 2 arent available in 4k)

Phase 1 box set: $45
Phase 2 box set: $59
Phase 3 box set part 1: $49

That's only $155 plus maybe another $70 for Phase 3 part 2 which is released next month (doesnt look like Amazon.com shows it but I can preorder it on the UK site)

u/ITziMeow · 2 pointsr/marvelstudios

The phase 3 part 1 box set doesn't contain any collector's piece. The necklace is just the box's art work. You can see all of it's contents on Zavvi.

There were other box sets of phase 1 and phase 2 which are similar to the phase 3 part 1 box set you are refering to, but they do not contain the props that the actual phase 1 and phase 2 collector's editions has.

u/Shooter_XI · 2 pointsr/marvelstudios

If you login to Amazon, Phase 1&2 + Phase 3 (Part 1 - up to Ragnarok) are listed as blu ray release on May 3rd 2019. Maybe they are bringing the older ones back into production.

Today I broke my dresser by attempting to use it as a step stool to get to the top shelves in my closet. Why was I using my dresser as a step stool? Because I couldn't afford a step stool :| Which means now I get to buy a new dresser, and until then the drawers are just stacked up in the back of my closet.

So, as much as I hate my most useful gift being a gift card, a gift card would really really help put a dent into the $60+ I'll need to spend on a dresser soon.

A real, actual item that I think is very interesting (and entertaining!) is The Princess Bride <3 And for a useful item, this silicone brownie mold solves the problem of who gets the edges and whose piece is bigger :-D

So Sam goes to his doctor one morning, and after a routine checkup, he sits down to have a serious checkup.

"You know," said Sam, "I've been really thinking, and I think I want to be castrated."

"What!?" exclaimed his doctor. "Are you sure? I mean this is a very serious issue and-"

"I know," Steve said, cutting his doctor off. "I thought about it a very long time, and I know I need to do it. You can't, CANT talk me out of it."

The doctor doesn't fight any more, after all, it's Sam's life. So an appointment is scheduled for soon after, and Sam is casturated. The surgery is a success, but Sam recovers in the hospital. He begins to walk again, although now he walks a bit funny. Down the hall in the hospital, he sees another man, walking the exact same way.

"So," said Sam to the another man "looks like you had the same operation as me. What made you do it?"

"Well," replied the man, "After twenty years, I decided I couldn't go without it anymore, and I just needed to be circumcised.

Sam stared blankly at the other man, and then suddenly screamed in horror "Shit! That's the word!!"

Also, the individual DVD cases should be black, not clear.

Amazon all the way. With the exception of 2014. I got that on Black Friday at Best Buy for $4. Just be on a look out for the [Kraken blu-rays] (https://www.amazon.com/Godzilla-Vs-Gigan-Blu-ray/dp/B00I462XLG/ref=pd_sim_74_7?_encoding=UTF8&psc=1&refRID=Q4NXP3Z44W4ZJK6AP4P4) and [The Toho Godzilla Movies Collection blu-rays] (https://www.amazon.com/Godzilla-Vs-King-Ghidorah-Mothra/dp/B00IQAUO2A/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1481679727&sr=8-1&keywords=godzilla+vs+king+ghidorah+blu+ray). The prices seem to jump to higher and lower over time. It's very inconsistent, so I just checked every other day to get the best deals. Lowest they normally around for is little over $7.

For [The Godzilla Collection] (https://www.amazon.com/Godzilla-Collection-Vol-Yuriko-Hoshi/dp/B000VXWK86/ref=sr_1_1?s=movies-tv&ie=UTF8&qid=1481679933&sr=1-1&keywords=the+godzilla+collection) I got it used at half price, BUT IT'S ON SALE RIGHT NOW FOR PRIME USERS, SO PICK IT UP.

Godzilla 1998 and 2014 are always cheap. Even without the Black Friday deal, it's still cheap on Amazon.

Godzilla vs. Biollante is tricky. There are multiple sources on Amazon. Make sure you get it from [this one] (https://www.amazon.com/Godzilla-Biollante-Blu-ray-Koji-Takahashi/dp/B00LVZK1LG/ref=sr_1_1?s=movies-tv&ie=UTF8&qid=1481680064&sr=1-1&keywords=godzilla+vs+biollante+blu+ray). Cheap as hell.

Then there's Son of Godzilla and Godzilla vs. Mechagodzilla. These two are extremely hard to come by, but the way I see it, here are your options:

  1. Pay for the official Japanes blu-rays (expensive)
  2. Pay for the official American distributed DVD's (expensive)
  3. Bootlegs, which is what I went with. Either get it from sumogorilla.com or showavideo.com. I went with sumogorilla, but what you should know is that only DVD's are sold here and they are all in Japanese dub with English subtitles. But from what I hear, showavideo has blu-rays with better quality, however, they cost a little bit more and in order to even view the website, you need to be a member. Sign-up is free, but you can only do so on the last day of a month and the first day of a month. Both websites are reliable.

Last but not least is King Kong vs. Godzilla. Now you can get the official blu-ray on Amazon for a cheap price, but mind you, this doesn't have the Japanese dub, only the English dub. It is for this reason that I purchased it from sumogorilla, seeing as I only intend to watch them in Japanese.

Well, there you have it. Hopefully this will help you on your journey in collecting every Godzilla movie out there. But I'm sure there are other methods of doing so as well, so keep an eye out for any tips and information! As time passes, the prices and sources will as well. But this is how I collected the films.

    Good luck!

To clarify the question:

There are DVD releases that I have seen come out such as the Ultimate Matrix Collection and Lord of the Rings Extended Editions, that packed so many special features into the DVD set it made it fun to own DVDs again.

There are restorations that have come out such as the Wizard of Oz special edition that made the picture and sound so vibrant and clear that you could see the actual burlap pattern in the scarecrow's face. They digitally painted out any scratches or lines, literally one cel at a time.

There are DVD re-releases such as the entire Studio Ghibli collection (Spirited Away, My Neighbor Totoro, Ponyo, etc.) with amazing distribution and backing from Disney/Pixar and more specifically, John Lasseter that made the movies so accessible and "mainstream" with new English dubs from well known American actors that it literally introduced anime to a whole new generation of viewers.

I don't know anything about Criterion, but I would imagine they fit into this picture somewhere.

"Special Features: Anime, Includes English & Japanese Language Tracks."

This is in the ebay listing in the "Item Specifics" box.

But personally I would be wary of a bootleg. It's cheap, so it might be worth the risk, but I'd be concerned that it just wouldn't work with my dvd player or the subtitles wouldn't work/you couldn't switch the languages.

Amazon is selling My Neighbor Totoro with English, French, and Japanese language and subtitles in French and English options. It's only $20.

Edit: This one looks more legitimate and says it's from 2004. IMDB says the Dakota Fanning one came out in 2005. It's possible this was pre-Dakota, although it also says on the case that it is a Disney film. This one's listing says it was released in 2002, definitely pre-Dakota. Bids are high though.

Do you have an Apple TV and an iPhone/iPad? Or an iPhone/iPad with an HDMI adapter? You can use the THX Tune Up app for an easy way to do basic calibration in a pinch. - http://www.thx.com/consumer/home-entertainment/mobile-apps/thx-tune-up-app-for-ios/

Otherwise check out Datacolor's Spyder4TV HD - http://spyder.datacolor.com/portfolio-view/spyder4tv-hd/

Or Disney's World of Wonder blu-ray calibration disc: http://www.amazon.com/Disney-WOW-World-Wonder-Blu-ray/dp/B0045ASBLG

Or, as Endymion86 said, google your TV model name and 'calibration.' If it's a popular model, you'll probably find people who've got good stats you can adjust your TV to.

Typically you'll want to turn off any feature that has an "On/Off" switch in the settings, in my experience.

Good luck. Calibrating a TV can really change your viewing experience for the better.

Do yourself a favor and pick up the Disney WoW disc and spend an evening doing a proper calibration on that set and avoid that THX preset. Or read up on the AVS forums in the GT50 owner thread and copy other users professionally calibrated settings. It'll make a world of difference and give you more accurate color reproduction than the built in presets.

A little off topic, but get one of these. It will help you calibrate your new TV and get the most out of the picture. I did it with my TV and the difference is huge. This is one of the best calibration discs available that you can get without a professional doing the calibration.

u/Meroun · 1 pointr/hometheater

Thank you for taking the time to answer my question.

Regarding the bias lighting, do you have any personal experience with it? You sound like someone with quite some knowledge in the area, so would you recommend it yourself or no?

And thanks for all the in-depth answers, I will probably keep it simple and get a smart 1080, maybe 3D TV and let the technology develop for some years more before I head into OLED/4k so the prices drop aswell.

On the calibration, would you say it is worth purchasing this?

As you mentioned yourself it could be the way to go, and several reviews on Amazon says the same.

u/laughland · 1 pointr/PS4

I don't think this has anything to do with the PS4 specifically, but it is definitely a good idea to customize your TV's settings. Usually 'Movie' mode or some equivalent will be significantly better right away, and then you can play around with it as you see fit. Like some suggested, AVS forums has some good information if you search for your TV, and reviewers like CNET, digital trends, etc generally post their recommended settings in the review. The best option of course is to get your TV professionally calibrated by an ISF calibrator, but that can cost around 300. If you're really interested in getting the best picture out of your TV but don't want to pay for calibration, I suggest getting a Disney WoW or Spears and Munsil calibration disc. They walk you through the calibration process step by step and give you test patterns and footage so you can adjust your settings till it looks right to you. The Disney one is especially useful for beginners, I've linked both below.

Nice! Seems like it hit all of your requirements for a good price. If you're looking for some specific picture calibrations, you could always pickup something like this. It's a blu-ray (or DVD) that helps you fine-tune those settings

u/DeathlyHallow · 1 pointr/harrypotter

I have the same set and I agree, bit disappointing. The dvds dont even look the same, it looks like some con artist just took the dvds out of their original packaging and placed them in a new holder, no second discs. However, I'm glad to have the collection all the same.

There is a complete box set + goodies TBR and you can preoder here on amazon: http://www.amazon.com/Wizards-Collection-Blu-ray-UltraViolet-Digital/dp/B007FSEAHY/ref=sr_tr_sr_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1331575081&sr=8-1

Amazon is selling this and there are youtube clips such as this one that promote the boxed set too.

Before you get too excited though, read the reviews on Amazon. This boxed set might not be all it's cracked up to be.

u/KidGorgeous69 · 1 pointr/harrypotter

Amazon had a deal on this on cyber Monday for $99, so I pounced. I had been waiting awhile to get a box set because I wanted a Blu-Ray one, but I didn't want that $700 one with all that other crap, and I didn't want the $39 one without any special features.
I almost missed this one because when I read the comments and reviews, they all said "No special editions" so I dismissed it. Then I found they had lumped the reviews for the $39 one in with this sale item, and then took the plunge.

You can still purchase this particular box for $150 on Amazon, but if you're curious what it looks like or includes, check the album. Enjoy!

u/Madonkadonk · 1 pointr/harrypotter

Hm, I wonder how much this costs...$350!?!?!

u/Velmeran · 1 pointr/harrypotter

The Creating the World of Harry Potter documentary was orginally exclusive to the Ultimate Editions, but it soon spread to other editions released after it (including the Wizard's Collection, Hogwart's Collection and most recently 8-Film Steelbook Collection.

Additionally the recently released Special Editions, which is what you've found, include the documentary as well. So the edition you stumbled upon while legit, won't contain any of the other physical extras that the Ultimate Editions have.

Yeah I looked at the link nerga provided and that would be cool to get, but I came across this one too:

BR 30th Anniversary Blu Ray Collection

Looks like it's on some kind of markdown/sale for $14.00 and is a 3 blurays edition that has all 5 versions plus the artbook.

I did a quick check of the contents looking at the back covers of both and this one seems to be the same thing packaged differently but the same content wise and a little cheaper.

I think I'm going to go ahead and get this one and "retire" my old final cut version bluray.

Rtings.com and Consumer Reports post their calibration settings for the TVs they review.

They tell you it varies based on production runs and your TV will be different, but it can give you a sense of what their calibration found.

Then there are kits on DVD or Blu-Ray that have color gels included that you can use to calibrate. I had one on DVD a while back and thought it did a good job for color, but not so much for backlight.

But you get what you pay for. A trained calibrator with the right equipment will be best and cost the most.

Using this disc and eyeballing it is the best that you can do without the pro tools. This is actually the disc that every website uses when they do a full/pro calibration. The only difference is that you won't be able to do some portions (like white balance) without the pro tools, but it's still very good for eyeballing.

u/Valleygirlpigfuck · 1 pointr/hometheater

Honestly man I would look at something like this:

http://www.bestbuy.com/site/samsung-60-class-59-9-10-diag--plasma-1080p-600hz-hdtv/8182045.p?id=1218864995544&skuId=8182045&st=samsung%20plasma&cp=1&lp=3

Its not as thin as the F8500, but still produces a great picture. There are a few reasons why it's so cheap:

  1. Plasma is dead. It's unfortunate because it is the superior technology. This does not mean that you won't be able to use it and enjoy it for several years.
  2. It's not smart. Who cares. You probably have at least 2 devices that are

Whatever you decide, it is imperative that you set it up properly for the room. You have 3 options here:

  3. Have it professionally calibrated by a trusted calibrator
http://www.imagingscience.com/ If you are in Florida, I would be more than happy to help out!

  4. Buy a test disc and at least make some adjustments yourself. Here is one example of many that are out there. These are pretty easy to use and have detailed instructions

    http://www.amazon.com/Spears-Munsil-Benchmark-Calibration-Edition/dp/B00CKWI13O/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1407264476&sr=8-1&keywords=spears+and+munsil

3)Learn how to calibrate and do it yourself. This will cost you a significant amount of time and money

The room does have a decent amount of ambient light AND the walls are light. Plasma is glass so glare could be an issue during the day, but it will look awesome in the dark. A bias light would help too! You can make your own for pretty cheap, or they are available for purchase.

Don't hesitate to hit me back up if you have further questions!

I think he’s completely right talking about people not tuning their TVs. If you are buying a $500-$2500+ TV and leaving it on the settings out of the box, you’re letting yourself down.

TV calibration disk -I have an older version of this disc and it makes a world of difference on a TV.

I think more than the TV tuning though is the quality of the streaming. No matter what device it seems like the stream was junk. It seems like a combination of HBO’s stream and probably cable providers bandwidth. Low bandwidth streams effect dark colors the worst and it makes the sound weak.

u/Zerowantuthri · 1 pointr/hometheater

The color saturation is adjustable on most any television. If you for some reason prefer the cooler, bluer image on the left you can achieve that with any TV.

The main aspect of 720p and above is resolution. That is what the 720 number means...how many lines of resolution there are. 720 > 480 hence more detail is possible in a given scene.

In addition the letter "p" and "i" mean something too. The "p" = Progressive Scan. Basically your tv will draw every line on the tv on each pass. The "i" = Interlaced. Basically your TV will draw every-other line on the TV on each pass. So lines 1, 3, 5, 7, 9 and so on then start at the top again and do lines 2,4,6,8,10 and so on. This makes moving images more fuzzy on the screen since the image on the second pass would be slightly out of line with the first image (sort of a jagged edge).

HDMI is also becoming the exclusive standard in TVs for a variety of reasons but mainly due to its copy protection features that make it difficult to impossible to copy source material (e.g. so you cannot make a perfect copy of a Blu-Ray disk). The new game consoles coming out have no analog output. You can thank Hollywood for that imposition.

In short, HD is superior in every way to standard definition. If you like the cooler colors you can make most any set replicate that. I think you are crazy but you can. The best thing to do with a new TV is to properly calibrate it with something like Spears & Munsil HD Benchmark and Calibration (there are also some calibration tools on some HD movies). Once done I think you would quickly adjust to the superior picture and that color scheme and never go back.

u/Lemon_Invader · 1 pointr/stevenuniverse

Uh, do you live in a different country or something? Blu ray players are cheap - you can get one for $10 or less at goodwill (I should know, I was just there and they had dozens of them) and both walmart and best buy have $5-$7 blu ray bargain bins, often good movies too like Pulp Fiction, Fight Club, Dreamworks films, classics like The Sandlot and Mrs. Doubtfire, and so on. Half my movie collection is from bargain bins. Goodwill also sells blu-ray films for $5 or less.

Hell, even Amazon has movies for cheap ($5-$10) so long as they aren't Disney since they artificially markup the price of their movies. Even new movies quickly get low - Ex Machina was at one point $7 just a month after release.

I seriously don't know what issue you are having. Blu-rays are old tech now - everyone wants the 3D and 4K instead.

EDIT:

Look, I can even backup my claim about Blu-rays being cheap.

The Sandlot: $4.99

Nightcrawler: $4.99

RWBY Vol 2: $4.99

Granted, there isn't much in the $3-$5 price range, but the $5 - $10 price range has lots of great options too:

Ghost in the Shell: $7.99

Batman - Under the Red Hood: $6.76

Mad Max Fury Road: $5.25

The Fifth Element: $8.10

Ex Machina: $7.88

Fellowship of the Ring: $9.99

The Two Towers: $8.37

Return of the King: $9.99

Zombieland: $7.50

Bargains all require patience for the prices to go down, and compromises, like buying used. You can find blu-rays cheap. Unless you live in some place like Australia or some other country where this shit is expensive because of import bull, then you have no excuse.

$8 isn't much, but it depends on how much poor subtitles bother you. To me, it's very distracting and would be an immediate return if I knew about it.

Here's one of the reviews I was referencing:

> The film itself I would easily rate 5 stars. The video quality and Japanese audio are also very good. The 1 star however is for the serious problems this release unfortunately has.

> Like mentioned in bonjanqi's review here, the subtitles are not good with misspellings, errors, and numerous lines with awkward phrasing.

> What hasn't been mentioned though is that the 5.1 English audio is also badly screwed up. It's missing numerous sound effects, it's very attenuated, and the LFE is muted. The English audio on the previous DVD releases are of much better quality than this with the sound effects in tact. There are forum posts elsewhere with the same complaints such as on The Fandom Post and Blu-ray forums.

FUNimation's exclusive is less expensive than the Amazon exclusive ($89.98), but they do have different bonus items. It's worth comparing the two in case someone wants the art books that come with the Amazon edition:

> Limited Edition clamshell art box

> 140 page black and white art book featuring early concept sketches and designs that highlight Cowboy Bebop’s origins.

> 48 page vibrant, full-color art book

I realize that this is very late, but I was just looking into my copy again. I ran it through MakeMKV (http://www.makemkv.com/, which I use for ripping off the disc for use in a media center) and it warns me that the disc was authored with DvdFab/MacTheRipper. So it's definitely a bootleg. I wrote to Amazon this morning and left the seller negative feedback with the proof of it being bootleg. They wrote me back within a couple hours offering a full refund (even though I purchased it about 90 days ago).

It's worth running it through MakeMKV, or some other diagnostic software that will give you information about what software the discs were authored with. If you pass that along to Amazon, you may be able to get a refund. Then you can just wait until around Christmas when they come out with an Amazon exclusive Blu-Ray/DVD combo pack of the complete series with some limited edition art books for just under $90: http://www.amazon.com/dp/B00MMOZ1SS/ref=wl_it_dp_o_pC_nS_ttl?_encoding=UTF8&colid=1LMR0VM22SWIP&coliid=I36WUJVZHWE88M

As far as the MRM is concerned working 60 hours a week isn't proof of failure on your part - just proof of the choices your made as a family. If you think you needed to work 60 hour weeks to meet your needs as a one-household family then you are in for a painful reality as a two-household family.

I'm not suggesting you "recalibrate" for a single episode. I'm suggesting you actually calibrate it right, and everything will look better. (or at least, the way it's supposed to)

I'm guessing you haven't watched a whole lot of very dark content on that TV yet. It looked incredible to me. I thought the cinematography and color grading was excellent in this episode. But of course, I'm very anal about calibrating my displays.

This is what I use to calibrate my displays, but even something like this should help a lot.
