Not old. Looks like these are all Splendid Music Box Co. products. Designed by the New York-based company and produced in Japan. http://splendidmusicbox.com/about/

Looks like this designer's pieces retail anywhere from $70something to $200something.

You can buy them on Amazon. They're sold by Benelic, which sells a lot of cool Ghibli stuff.

Here's Baron, here's Luise, and here's Totoro as well!

Just go to Love Tree Point and find the one Justin made for Betsy!

In all seriousness, I've made a custom music box using this:

Might not be exactly what you're looking for but possibly the best way to get one.

To clarify, the basswood box and the Kikkerland Music Box Kit come separately, I forgot to take some photos before I attached them. Sorry for the potential confusion!

Here's a timelapse video of drawing the box cover.

And here's a demonstration of the music box. Some notes are definitely off, but I'll fix them once I get more music strips.

If anyone's interested in making their own, you can buy the music box kit it here . Please note that it cannot play sharps or flat, and that you should transpose music to C-note before punching holes into the strip.

Music Box Composer by Jelly Biscuits will save you a lot of time (~$15 for the full version) since it allows you to print notes on strips and you can just punch the holes. I only experimented with the trial version to test some notes, so it's better to just check out the site.

Same question was posted a couple of months ago. I'd love to know too, but other than fan-made one-offs, they don't appear to exist. The best advice in the last thread consisted of an instructable for a music box, plus a link to the sheet music for the melody. Here's the thread, if you're interested.

http://www.reddit.com/r/cowboybebop/comments/2juyxj/would_love_to_have_a_music_box_with_memory_but_i/

Edit: Here's a DIY music box kit I've seen sold on ThinkGeek and also used in several YouTube instructables. You have to punch out the score and build your own box, but it is inexpensive.

One of these might be your best bet.

I'm pretty sure the song you posted is mostly in the key of B-flat major, and I think it has a couple very short key changes thrown in.

The typical music box has around 12-30 playable notes and plays from 6-8 bars of music (usually less than 30 seconds). The cheaper crank ones you can find at toy stores tend to be on the lower end of that range (12-18 notes).

If you were to make your own, you'd probably want to stick to the most recognizable melody from the song (probably the first 30 seconds since it's 8 bars) and skip any part with a key change. The notes you'll mostly be using are Bb, C, D, Eb, F, G, A. If you choose a short segment, someone else can probably transcribe/simplify it for you better than I would (try /r/transcribe). I could probably peck it out on the piano, but I don't have any way of making sheet music. (Note: I suggest transcribing it a full step up to the key of C-major).

If you choose to attempt to make a real music box and not one of those paper strip kinds, you'll need to find a comb (the part of the music box that has all the notes on it) and a spool (the part with all the raised bumps that triggers the notes on the comb) or just take one apart, as this website's tutorial suggests.

I suggested transcribing the song to the key of C because it is a common key for music boxes, so you could much more easily pick one up at a toy store. I can't think of any songs in B-flat off the top of my head, so I'm not sure it would be very easy to find a comb in B-flat. Somewhere Over the Rainbow, Twinkle Twinkle Little Star, When the Saints Go Marching In, and The Entertainer are all usually in C, and they're pretty easy to find.

How much time do you have for this? I don't have a lot of free time, but I might be able to help put together a template if you decide to go with one of the paper strip kinds.

I used this, and only used tape, scissors, and the materials that came with the kit. I used 2 of the 3 paper strips that were included, but there are refills (also on Amazon) if you need them.

I also downloaded a free piano app so I could test out some of the intervals before punching holes in the paper. I used the tape on the underside of the paper to cover the holes if I made any mistakes.

Alguien tiene idea de donde se pueden comprar esas cajas musicales que funcionan cargándoles un papel perforado?

TIL I learned that music box kits are a thing. Thanks OP!

It might not be exactly what you're looking for but you could make a box and put one of these in it.

You do have to be able to write the melody yourself, but its a good option.

I found this fella! He’s handmade!
I’ve heard that faerie goblins which are made by hand are the luckiest of the faeries and will create lucky gifts for their gardeners! Plus he has a red hat!

u/moujaune · 2 pointsr/TwoXChromosomes

Something cool would be a gift that doesn't only foster appreciation between the two siblings but also a gift that's also fun for a child to play with in itself. Might be a tad too early but something cool would be a punch your own tune music box. You get to mess around and make some sick jams while popping off fun lullabies for the wee one.

Well I have a bit of experience woodworking, so making the box wasn't particularly hard. The actual music box contraption I bought off of Amazon, Here's the link

Then its just a matter of hole-punching the sheet music onto the paper they give you (the sheet music I actually hand transcribed myself, but you can find some other ones that are similar online) and screwing it into place inside the box. Pretty simple, really!

u/undertakersbrother · 1 pointr/woodworking

If I didn't know any better, they may have taken the mechanism from this kit or something similar.

The paper strip ones are the only ones I can find that you can customize without the price getting exorbitant.

This beautiful Totoro music box. ♥

I heart mom's! I nominate my mom. She has always been there for me and my four sisters. My older sister had hydrocephalus and has had many surgeries over the years. My mom has been there every time and always has time for anything we need. I look up to her and try to be as much like her as possible. Even though I used to hate it when people said I was just like her. Right now she drives 20 miles twice a week to watch my daughter so I can work two jobs. She just finally got a house after waiting for 7 years. She lost everything in a fire 7 year ago and has just no been able to have a real home again. She is never too old to act like a dork with her daughters:)

I would love to get her this or this.

u/Kobbett · 1 pointr/whatisthisthing

For making home made music boxes usually. They're still sold if you want another.

u/sunflowercompass · 1 pointr/tipofmytongue

We had music boxes in the 80s, so I'd call your thing a "music box clock"

My grandmother had a few that she would let me play with when I was in the single digits, always wanted one for myself as I have no idea what she did with hers. No one seems to know what they are. How do you determine randomness?

What's the most random on yours?

u/RGreenway · 1 pointr/DIY

You can do this with a microcontroller, either with conductive, or probably less fiddly, optical sensors. However, you may have seen these already, but music boxes are ideal for punch-card style programming.

https://smile.amazon.com/Kikkerland-Make-Your-Own-Music/dp/B000HAUEFY/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1425449225&sr=8-1&keywords=paper+music+box

You can do some neat math/music concepts this way, including mobius music.

Nah, I used a 15 note diatonic box

What's your budget? This company will do it, but it's quite expensive: https://www.musicboxattic.com/custom-songs-tune-electronic-module-movement.html (click on the "Custom Mechanical Movement" tab).

If you can get by with a standard 18-note mechanism, I think you might be better off buying a cheap mechanism with a pre-installed tune (tons of these on eBay), and making a custom music roll for it. Maybe work with a jeweler.

There are also DIY kits for hand-cranked (not wind-up) mechanisms that use paper rolls: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B000HAUEFY/ref=psdc_3291682011_t3_B074WGH6SV

Artsy for life

I am a music teacher! I have been writing band pieces since before I graduated high school, and I continue to do so now. However, I have been wanting to look at different avenues of composition, and I found one that has piqued my interest.

I would like one of these, a Music Box Set that you can punch out your own songs for the music box! I think it would be amazing if my foster son could fall asleep to music his fosterdad made, instead of the music box we got him that only plays a song for about eight seconds before repeating. Plus, I can work with the kids to create songs as well that they can go home and show their parents!
