I've seen kids start in 4th grade on a standard tenor trombone. The instrument is a little heavy for small children, and it's a bit too long for most kids that age to get their arm out comfortably.

That being said, I can heartily recommend the pBone mini. It's tuned slightly differently than a standard tenor trombone; it's an alto. It's made entirely out of plastic, so it's lightweight and pretty hard to damage. The slide takes some getting used to (it has to get worn in first), but overall, I think they're perfect for young kids if you can find a teacher who's willing to work with you. You can then upgrade to the full size version.

This way, if he falls out of love with the horn, you're not out a whole lot of money. But if he sticks with it for the long haul, he's got one he can throw over his shoulder and take on plane rides if he has to travel.

A trombone pitched a fourth higher, in Eb.

You can buy one for under $100: https://www.amazon.com/pBone-PBONE2R-Plastic-Trombone-Beginners/dp/B00BR1IY9U

This is the instrument that they cloned.. https://www.amazon.com/Bach-Stradivarius-F-Attachment-Trombone-Lightweight/dp/B000T08VIO/

The Cecilio is about 15% of the price of the Bach.. so yes, the advantage is that while it's not a name brand, it is much, much less expensive, without nearly the same drop in quality that you might expect for an instrument that is priced so much lower than comparable instruments.

like one of these?

What do you look for in alto trombones? By that I mean what are the generally accepted bore and bell sizes?

I bike with my horn in my Ritter gig bag on my back.

EDIT: Similar to this (just an older model)

the resistance to rotating is a function of the instrument's moment of inertia (in the same way that the resistance to accelerating is a function of its mass).

looking at amazon listings for each instrument (trombone, marching baritone) gives an estimate of the weight and lengths:

Instrument | Dimensions | Weight
---|---|----
Trombone | 58.6 x 10.8 x 10.8 inches* | 10.83 lbs
Marching Baritone | 25.4 x 17.9 x 14.6 inches | 19.15 lbs

the listing for the trombone has its length as 35 inches. i'm not a brassematician, but i am vaguely aware that you can extend a trombone, and this yamaha page suggests that its maximum extended length is 60 cm. so 60 cm + 35 inches = 58.6 inches.

the difficulty of rotating each instrument would depend on the axis about which you were trying to rotate it. here is a diagram of some possible axes you might choose. the green axis maximizes the effect of the increased length of the trombone. the red axis also maximizes the length effect, with the additional restriction that the axis passes through the center of mass of each instrument. the purple axis is selected as an example of a choice of axis that favors the marching baritone.

i approximated the instruments as being prisms the size of their outer dimensions with a uniform density and applied the relevant formulas for moment of inertia to obtain the following table:

Instrument | Axis through middle (green)| Axis at edge (red) | Axis at edge (purple)
---|---|---|----
Trombone | 3205 in^2 lbs | 12502 in^2 lbs | 526 in^2 lbs
Marching baritone | 1370 in^2 lbs | 4459 in^2 lbs | 2385 in^2 lbs

so it is very possible for the increased length of the trombone to cause it to be more difficult to rotate, but it is very dependent upon how you're rotating each instrument.

Wow, that price is nuts. After a bit of searching, I found the [Meinl Trombone Didgeridoo] (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aBDG5_LpW5E) which bears a striking resemblance to the X8 Drums Slide Didge and ranges around the same price. Seems to have good reviews too.

Well the item that would make me most happy you probably can't afford it being this so to be reasonable I'll ask for this. Im a music nerd :3
