From what I've heard, it's best to care a nail whitener with you and reapply on a regular basis. Some people reapply a couple of times a day.

The other tip I read was about using a blue tinted clear nail polish. Supposedly, the blue enhances the nails, while making the tips look whiter.

Full disclosure: Haven't tried this myself, but I've thought about it. (Also, don't remember the sources!! Sorry!)
