Maybe a bug catching kit? They're really fun for kids. A magnifying glass, little net and small vented tank or jar to put bugs in its all you need.
I found a few things. This is like a microscope. This is a bug catcher vacuum so he won't accidentally squish them and here is a vented bug cage.
For the 2 year old get a dip net like this and some bread. Get a bucket and let him have fun.
