https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00XMM6L8S/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_wdYYxbA6C82YA currently using this one, holds everything I need on the road and the price doesn't hit the wallet too hard

u/NelsonMinar · 8 pointsr/NintendoSwitchDeals

For comparison, the price of a new Nintendo Switch Dock on Amazon is now $155.99. I can't even find the Nintendo branded dock new on any other sites, but last I looked the best I could find was like $70. Did Nintendo simply stop making docks entirely and abandon it?

I finally gave up and bought a dongle adapter for $22 branded YCCTEAM. You also have to buy a separate charger and cables so it ends up being $50 or so. $30 from Best Buy is a good deal. Update the linked dongle doesn't work for me, can't recommend it.

Hey OP, I have some suggestions for you (these are on the DS side of things, as I don't have a 3DS yet because I've been mainly PC gaming). I copied this from one of my earlier posts on the same subject.

  • Elite Beat Agents - This is a rhythm game where you tap circles and draw lines while following the beat of a song, as secret agents dance in the background and try to save the world. I know it sounds kooky, and it is, but that's half the fun. The Japanese original, Osu! Tatakae! Ouendan, was such a huge cult hit that they came out with the English version in Elite Beat Agents. There are a bunch of great songs on it, and the covers are actually decent (a couple are better than the original). Each song opens with a story that introduces someone in need of your help -- and somehow it's your dancing/cheering which pushes him/her to succeed. The stories are often hilarious, but there is one that will rip your heart out and make you teary. Absolutely love this game. (Screen protector strongly recommended!)

  • Rhythm Heaven - Another rhythm-based game, but these two are just really fun and I decided to recommend both. Rhythm Heaven is different from Elite Beat Agents in that it's more a collection of mini games you need to beat in order to advance. There are about 5 mini games in a collection (and around 8 collections in all, I think), and once you beat each one individually, you are given a 'recap' round that basically mashes them all together. This game looks deceptively simple but can be so damn difficult at times that achieving success is so satisfying! The beats in this game are very catchy.

  • The Legend of Zelda: Phantom Hourglass - Lovely RPG. I thought the visuals were beautiful, and it was fun to play. Not much to say except it's a Zelda game, an awesome and fun one at that. The game makes use of the DSL's touchscreen. Controls may be kind of a bit hard to familiarize yourself with if you're used to normal console controls for Zelda, but after a while you get the hang of it and it's really fun to slash your sword around.

  • Advance Wars: Dual Strike - Tactical turn-based strategy game where you try to battle it out with enemies and crush them all. I didn't think I'd like it, but I'm SO glad I gave it a try. I remember staying up late into the night playing this. It's really addicting. There's a sequel, Days of Ruin, but I've never played that so can't give a personal opinion on it. It comes highly recommended, though.

  • Rune Factory 3: A Fantasy Harvest Moon - Take the original Harvest Moon games that were about farming and raising animals and getting to know people in your town, and add in some RPG-ish dungeon crawling (where you can also tame monsters to help out on your farm), and you have Rune Factory. I will always have a soft spot for Harvest Moon games; this just adds another element to it.

  • Mario Kart DS - This is fun, and there's just something addictive about it that kept me coming back for yet another round. I liked this version, though some people do say the controls are a bit off, but I never experienced that.

Other games that have been strongly recommended by others (but I have not played):

  • Final Fantasy III
  • Golden Sun: Dark Dawn
  • Radiant Historia
  • Kirby Canvas Curse
  • Advance Wars: Days of Ruin

Totally did not expect to find this particular title (a smash hit rhythm game in Japan), let alone an import at a local suburban bookstore. A nice surprise to find the manual, Club Nintendo, and game cart in such stellar condition.

The game is Moero! Nekketsu Rhythm Damashii Osu! Tatakae! Ouendan 2, the second game of the Ouendan series, with a spinoff called Elite Beat Agents in the States.

u/Brettweiser · 6 pointsr/3DS

I would suggest playing them in the order that they were released. Each game has its own story so you wont be completely lost if you jump in out of order, however you may miss out on some context from previous games, but this is not a game breaker. The released order does not follow chronological order, but for the sake of the story I would still play them in released order.

Release Order:

Curious Village (DS)
Diabolical Box (DS)
Unwound Future (DS)
Last Spectre (DS)
Miracle Mask (3DS)
Azran Legacy (3DS)

You can find the DS games pretty cheap used now days as well:

u/MoralTrilemma · 6 pointsr/MonsterHunter

I haven't used one on 3ds or with Monster Hunter, but an Action Replay cart is probably what you're looking for.

Amazon UK link

u/DOG124579 · 4 pointsr/3DS

I would recomend the first one. It seems to be reletively cheap used. 13$ at Gamestop. Its simmilar if you look at the used ones on Amazon.

u/RogueWolf64 · 4 pointsr/ShouldIbuythisgame

Here you go. The DS has an incredible library and it's looking like the 3DS is going to as well. Have fun!

u/coldfire074 · 4 pointsr/nintendo

Unfortunately, no. That appears to be a Nintendo DS or another version of that system in the same family (Nintendo DS, Nintendo DS Lite, Nintendo DSi, and Nintendo DSi XL). The games I mentioned above only work on Nintendo 3DS systems (Nintendo 3DS, Nintendo 3DS XL, and Nintendo 2DS).

For that system, you would want to find a copy of Pokémon Diamond, Pokémon Pearl, Pokémon Platinum, Pokémon HeartGold, Pokémon SoulSilver, Pokémon Black, Pokémon White, Pokémon Black 2, or Pokémon White 2. These are listed oldest to newest, roughly. The only one of those that Amazon has in stock (sold and shipped by Amazon) is Pokémon White 2.

Pokémon White 2 (currently $17.99):
http://www.amazon.com/dp/B0050SVNP8/

You do not need to play the first game, Pokémon White, to play Pokémon White 2, but there are references made to the first game that she may not understand. It shouldn't stop her from enjoying the game at all though.

u/tsukikari · 4 pointsr/3DS

I use this one and really like it. It fits my XL, has a spot for a charger and 12 game slots. But I think it's unlikely for there to be many cases that only fit regular N3DS, especially since they would be losing a lot of potential money from people with XLs whereas if they made it a bit bigger they could get both markets.

u/[deleted] · 3 pointsr/Random_Acts_Of_Amazon

I want a DS because I love Pokemon and yet I've never owned a portable Nintendo console nor have I played a Pokemon game other than on an emulator.

Sadly, there isn't a DS pokemon game under $20, so the other game I played on the DS and loved: Elite Beat Agents

Radler is rad and so is Brad

EDIT:realized that I typed 3DS by accident, but silly me!

u/sp0toft3a · 3 pointsr/japan

These are what I use, they might not be exactly what you're looking for, but they are my old standby tools.

Kanji Sonomama Rakubiki Jiten for DS is good for scribbling characters out and getting a response. It's not very tough on stroke order, though sometimes if you completely mess up the order the character won't come up right away. There are plenty of electronic dictionaries that let you write out kanji, too. As far as stroke order, Jim Breen's Online dictionary, search under Kanji Look Up, search the kanji and click on SOD or SODA (stroke order diagram). There are basic rules for stroke order, left to right, top to bottom (http://thejapanesepage.com/kanji/stroke_order reading this I realize I've been doing some wrong... I should really study more.)

DS software, way too expensive here, but this is it: http://www.amazon.com/Kanji-Dictionary-Sonomama-Rakubiki-Nintendo-DS/dp/B000O2S9VQ/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1313021801&sr=8-1

u/Amauriel · 3 pointsr/LearnJapanese

This one?

It never leaves my DSiXL, now that I have the 3DS for gaming. It's not meant to actually teach the language, it is actually a Japanese to English dictionary. You write the Kanji and it tells you words that use that Kanji. I had two years of Japanese study before I began using it, so I can't say how well it would work for extreme beginners, as it is a Japanese title first, and the menus and everything are in Japanese.

But as an alternative to an electronic pocket dictionary, it's fantastic (and I got it when it came out, so it was much cheaper than a dictionary then too. Not as much now.)

u/brendapie · 3 pointsr/Random_Acts_Of_Amazon

Professor Layton. The series is about an archaeologist who solves mysteries and the game is full of puzzles that make use of the touch screen. It's well written and the animation is absolutely charming. You'll be able to play the first four games in the series but you'll need a 3DS for the later games.

u/rahnawyn · 3 pointsr/patientgamers

Did you have an original DS/have you played any of those yet? The DS has a ton of great titles that you can play on your 3DS if didn't start there (or even if you did!)

Here's a long list of random games that you might enjoy:

u/Honda_TypeR · 3 pointsr/GameDeals

A lot of these ios FF ports are the newer Nintendo DS version. Those versions were all remade in 3D and look a lot more modern compared to the originals... It is still hard to justify the high prices of Square Enix, but SE is overpriced on all of their top franchise games.

Even on ios the prices are still high compared to other apps, but if you are a FF fan these are all great ports. Also this 50% sale is the best I typically see SE do on their ios apps.... so if you are tempted do it now or they go back up to 16 bucks again.

(here is price tracker http://appshopper.com/games/final-fantasy-iv)

Just an FYI this is the cheapest price it has ever gone.

> Just for a cross comparison...

> Here is cost of FF IV for Nintendo DS brand new http://www.amazon.com/Final-Fantasy-IV-Nintendo-DS/dp/B00184219U it's 20 bucks, so for the ios ported version of it for only 8 is a great deal.

u/hyeinkali · 3 pointsr/3DS

I have THIS on my Zelda edition 3DSXL. It's a very thick vinyl and stays on the 3DS really well. It was a pain to get the corners done but well worth it. For less than $20, you can't go wrong.

u/Naoe · 3 pointsr/3DS

I bought this one: http://www.amazon.com/Charger-Cable-Nintendo-3DS-DSi-XL/dp/B0099HP4OC/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1395326313&sr=8-1&keywords=3ds+usb
It seemed to charge much slower than using the stock one, other than that I haven't had a single problem with it. I highly recommend it.

u/JohnnyVNCR · 3 pointsr/3DS

For anyone seeing this and wishing they had 3DS USB cable: http://www.amazon.com/Charger-Cable-Nintendo-3DS-DSi-XL/dp/B0099HP4OC/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1398097750&sr=8-1&keywords=3ds+usb+charger

I bought this to use in my car, which I already have USB adapters in. Has worked great for almost a year.

I have a 3DS XL, New 3DS XL, and a 2DS. I find myself playing some of my cartridge-based games on my 2DS from time to time. It's a very comfortable system to hold. I also have a neoprene pouch to store and carry it in. While I prefer the New 3DS XL, you can't really go wrong with the 2DS.

u/Rajani_Isa · 3 pointsr/3DS

https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00XMM6L8S?psc=1

Seems like it might hold the regular 3DS a bit better. Not as many games, but you could probably get something like [this] (https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00PTYXVZ8/ref=ox_sc_sfl_title_1?ie=UTF8&psc=1&smid=A3F3WC2XXCSM1P) and fit more games in it.

u/marxama · 3 pointsr/Vive

These seem good, one of the reviews even say that they bought them for the Vive and they seemed please. I just ordered a pair - the shipping (to Sweden) was more than the actual product, but it was still less than 10 euro, easily worth it considering all the horror stories.

u/CaspianX2 · 2 pointsr/patientgamers

If you're limiting this to cartridge titles you're gonna' get fewer results, but I can recommend some:

Steel Diver, a decent submarine combat game from Nintendo.

Scribblenauts Unlimited - A good entry in a solid game series.

Tom Clancy's Ghost Recon: Shadow Wars, a good strategy-RPG.

Also, regular DS games (which play on the 3DS). Unlike 3DS games, DS games are not region-sensitive, so you can play imports just fine on your US system, too:

Elite Beat Agents - Probably the best music-rhythm game on the DS.

Rhythm Heaven - Another very good music-rhythm game, albeit more in the abstract.

Sonic Colors and Sonic Rush - Surprisingly good Sonic games.

Mama's Combo Pack - I've never played Camping Mama, but Cooking Mama is a great series of food-themed touchscreen minigames.

Geometry Wars: Galaxies - A great space shooter

WarioWare DIY - A fun entry in Nintendo's "microgame" series, with a "custom build it yourself" twist.

N+ - A simple, but extremely fun and challenging, ninja platformer game.

Pac Pix - A fun arcadey game where you draw Pac-Man to eat ghosts.

Jam Sessions and its sequel - Not a game as much as a tool to create music. Still, very good.

Bust-A-Move DS - A surprisingly good version of this classic puzzle game series with touchscreen support.

Polarium DS - A good, if simple, puzzle game.

Touchmaster, More Touchmaster, Touchmaster Connect and Touchmaster 3 - Good minigame collections.

Pipe Mania - A decent take on the old "Pipe Dream" puzzle game.

u/palaiag · 2 pointsr/LearnJapanese

I considered getting one awhile back but they all were really pricey to order from the US and I didn't think I was advanced enough yet to make good use of it. Instead, I took the recommendation of some guy on YouTube and got this:

Kanji Dictionary: Kanji Sonomama Rakubiki Jiten https://www.amazon.com/dp/B000O2S9VQ/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apap_ppFkQuEHMshEi

If you have a DS (or even just buy one for this) it's a fraction of the cost and has most of the same features. It has kanji drawing recognition for looking up words whose pronunciation you don't know and the Japanese-English dictionary is way more reliable than internet dictionaries (you can tell because the definitions make better sense and the example sentences are actually readable). I am happy that I settled for the DS cartridge for now because it's more than adequate at the intermediate level.

u/MMAPhreak21 · 2 pointsr/Random_Acts_Of_Amazon

Commenting for when I get to my computer.

EDIT: I am OK with used for all of these, except for the PC game (because Steam doesn't let you buy used).

PS3: ICO and Shadow of the Colossus. I want to play this game because I've been very interested in the "games as art" argument for a while and this is supposedly the best example of such.

PC: BioShock. My best friend Mikey says this is his favorite game ever. Considering he's never played it, I'm not sure what he's talking about. However, the story looks wonderful and I really dig FPSes on PC.

DS/3DS: Professor Layton and the Curious Village. I have heard a ton about this game, all of it good. For some reason it's impossible to find, so I haven't bought it yet.

Card game/Board game: If it counts, this YuGiOh! card. I've been working on a Cyber Dragon deck for forever, and I'm four cards away from finishing it. This is one of those cards, and the price went up a ton since the Cyber Dragon Revolution structure deck came out.

Wild card: Fire Emblem: The Sacred Stones. Fire Emblem is one of the best series ever. It's combination of strategy and storytelling makes it a wonderful experience.

My favorite game is Fire Pro Wrestling Returns.

u/serpentcroissant · 2 pointsr/Random_Acts_Of_Amazon

oh! i would def be interested. i'm trying to save up for one for my son. he has been asking for one for so long now. Favorite video game. of all time. lol

Edit: Favorite DS game.

u/watsoned · 2 pointsr/Random_Acts_Of_Amazon

From what it's showing me, I'd have to go with Professor Layton.

u/reticentbias · 2 pointsr/gaming

FF tactics is a great one, though it's far inferior to the PSX version.

I can also whole-heartedly recommend Golden Sun, though it's not as deep of an RPG, it's extremely fun. Etrian Odyssey is as hardcore as they come, so it may or may not be your cup of tea. You actually explore and draw your own dungeon maps in it, and the class combinations are nuts.

If you aren't a big fan of JRPGs, you probably won't like The World Ends With You but you'd be doing yourself a great disservice if you skipped it.

There's also Chrono Trigger, which, if you never played it, deserves a chance to be seen. It is definitely an old school JRPG though.

FF3 and FF4 are both great if you like that kind of thing, but if you're not into JRPGs, again, you probably won't enjoy them.

I really loved the most recent Dragon Quest, even though it is decidedly old school and very much a JRPG in the traditional format. But it does a lot of things well, and the class system is deep and rewarding.

Bioware made a Sonic RPG, though I haven't played it so I can't recommend it.

The Castlevania games are all awesome, but they're RPGs like Diablo is an RPG.

u/Cellophane_Girl · 2 pointsr/Random_Acts_Of_Amazon

For you Because Kingdom hearts is a fantastic series, even if the DS games aren't quite as awesome as the PS2 games. ;)

For me/husfriend Playstation 2 contoller because we only have one working one now and the husfriend and I want to play games together. (;n;)

Also Y U NO GIFT YOURSELF!!?!? I love Kevin THE MOST INTERESTING MAN ON RAoA!! ;P

when i was much younger my best friend and i would work odd jobs all summer long and combine our cash at the end to buy some sort of video game or video game gear. then wed spend the next few months playing just that and then start working again. it was a ton of fun and actually taught us some good lessons haha

I'm still a kid at heart!

Dragon Quest IX - $18.49

Golden Sun: Dark Dawn - $11.38

Total just under $30.

First off, happy birthday! :D

Finishing my finals has made me happiest. Also I turned in all my application materials for a internship with the Department of Transportation and I'm pretty much guaranteed to get the job :)

Also my favorite foods are sushi, steak, and chicken alfredo :P
I really would like this DS game, but its like $13 once you include shipping, so if that's not possible, then this movie would be nice! It was one of my favorites when I was younger :)

The closest thing I can get to come to $20 so far, including shipping I assume, is Okami Den. $11.98 + $7.99 shipping for a grand total of $19.97. Let's see if I can find something closer.

But I don't want the Snow, snow, go away. I like my snow.

Pokemon, obviously the most American game in existence.

Freedom! "Beulah red" is the name of the red marble that gives the Colorado State Capitol its distinctive splendor. Cutting, polishing, and installing the marble in the Capitol took six years, from 1894 to 1900. All of the "Beulah red" marble in the world went into the Capitol. It cannot be replaced, at any price, so you know, that's pretty freaking American.

u/DeeBeeR · 2 pointsr/ShouldIbuythisgame

Animal Crossing: Wild World: It's an amazing game and was one of my first games on a Nintendo DS. There's so much to do in the game and I would really recommend it. Also, the more recent Animal Crossing (New Leaf) is a huge improvement from Wild World. I would deeply recommend that aswell, but it's for 3DS.

Harvest Moon: Sunshine Islands: Harvest Moon is a game that's similar to Animal Crossing but it's mostly about looking after your farm, growing crops, raising animals, etc. It's extremely fun and a huge time sink.

Pokemon Black 2: It's a Pokemon game, you can't really go wrong. It's like every other Pokemon game - Fun as heck! You can also buy Pokemon White 2 which is just about the same with little differences like the UI. A list of differences can be found HERE.

My list may not really be descriptive as they're my personal opinion on the games, but if you want to know more about the games, ask me :)

u/bluizzo · 2 pointsr/powersaves3ds

If I'm right, unless things changed since I got my powersaver, you only use the game carts to use powersaver. For an old AR cart, I don't know. I kinda wondered myself, but then again I hacked my 3ds.

I bought the Skinomi Full Body Screen Protector for my 3DS. I read a lot of the reviews and heard mostly positive stuff. A very small number of people claimed that it could damage the 3DS, but from my experience, possible damage is not an issue. Although application was tedious because of a lack of a diagram, all of the panels applied evenly and without much issue. Now my entire 3DS is protected and has a nice light sheen to it.

If you just care about the screens, then there's also a Skinomi variant that just has the protectors for the screens. A lot of people like the HORI protectors too, although personally I can't say whether or not they are good. Hope this helps, and I hope you find what you are looking for.

u/dranged · 2 pointsr/nintendo

I ordered this. I really liked the Skinomi skin for my phone, so I thought I would give the full 3DS skin a shot :P.

It isn't thick like a traditional case; it is a clear plastic protector that is applied to the whole body of the device. The application method definitely keeps bubbles to a minimum/ non existent (which I had problems with when applying other similar screen protectors/ skins).

u/MananTheMoon · 2 pointsr/PAX

This is the one I've been using for the past few months.

http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B005K7192G/ref=oh_details_o07_s01_i01?ie=UTF8&psc=1

It works relatively well. I've never done exact testing on it, but it usually can charge my phone (Galaxy S3) to 100% from almost no battery, and then still have some juice left over. It's charges somewhat slowly, but that's not much of a concern for me.

Since it can pretty much charge anything that uses USB, It will probably also work with a 3DS if you end up getting a USB charger for the 3ds. The stock charger that comes with the 3ds isn't USB, so you'll need to get something like this if you don't already have one.

u/andysaurus_rex · 2 pointsr/3DS

This one looks fine

u/Andrewsarchus · 2 pointsr/pokemon

There's only one brand of action replay, really. The model I use is THIS ONE. You plug the device into the computer usb (with no game in it, and without it being plugged into the DS or 3DS), and it should download the drivers and program. If not, you can get them from their website. You create them on PokéGen, select what game they are going to (B2W2, BW, HGSS, etc), generate codes for them, put the codes into Action Replay (it's one at a time, unfortunately. So one code is one Pokémon). Plug the action replay into your 3DS once the codes are installed, and plug the game into the action replay. Turn the codes on for the Pokémon you want, verify they are in there (if it flashes blue, do not save, for one of them is REALLY illegal) and then save, take out the AR, plug in the game, and use poke transporter to send them into the Bank. If they are illegal to transfer into Bank, it'll hold it back, so you know which one is wrong, and can go back to PokéGen to figure out what you did wrong and try again.

u/jaxxly · 2 pointsr/CasualPokemonTrades

Can I use this one?
http://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B00A1AQJAO/

I don't know what to do with the other Acton Replay if I buy that one. I won't need both.

Late to the party but I recently bought this case for my girlfriend. Really dig it. Snug fit for my n3ds xl with a clear Hori protector on it, but it can still hold games and the 3ds with ease. Tons of room for her n3ds (not xl) with a clear Hori protector on it.

Not exactly what you were asking for, but this one seems pretty good. Separate compartment for a 3DS, separate compartment for a charger, space for 12 games and two styli. You can probably fit a few more games too if you double them by space or get a more flexible game card case not made of bulky plastic (Penguin United used to have some, but they're apparently out of stock).

Alternatively, Hori is going to launch a Pokemon trio of cases that seems like it'll carry a lot, but that hasn't come out yet and doesn't have a lot of details. Here's the link anyway:

Here. Not official Nintendo ones, but the reviews all seem to say they are strong. One review even used them for the Vive.

u/Frunzle · 2 pointsr/Vive

Someone on here was happy with these ones from zedlabz. They seem to have decent reviews, specifically for the Vive as well.

u/Simpanra · 2 pointsr/Vive

Hey thanks!

I made them myself by using the ZedLabs straps and some Heavy Duty Garden Wire after an incident whilst playing HoloBall :)

u/Youngheezy182 · 2 pointsr/NintendoSwitch

I would reccomend this case. its the one i was using before i won a free deluxe case thing on a reddit giveaway. unfortunately it doesnt have much extra space for any other controllers, just the switch, joycons, and games. if youre looking for a bigger case go with this one

u/JetJaguar124 · 2 pointsr/Switch

Good start. If you want to make your Switch a truly portable console, I'd recommend this HDMI to USB-C adapter, as well as a retractable HDMI cable. This combo will fit into any carrying case, along with maybe another set of Joycons, and you'll be able to play literally anywhere super easily, for less money than it takes to buy a new dock and way more compactly. This has made it super easy to take my Switch to other people's houses, to different countries, and even to my work (me and my co-workers played Smash on a gigantic conference room screen while working Christmas eve).

Problem is it's an image so unless you do some OCR it won't be so easy to just plug into Google translate. BUT, for those of you studying Japanese here are some good tools.

Google translate for one, obviously.

Kanji Dictionary Lookup (By stroke number and radicals) - If you're studying Japanese, it is SO important to understand how to count number of strokes (not as intuitive as it may seem) and different radical types.
Kanji Dictionary

Rikaichan (Firefox extension that will let you hover and get hiragana readings for kanji as well as English and definitions. For a word to word basis, I think it's better than Google Translate.)
Rikaichan

EDIT One more good reference I forgot to mention. If you have a Nintendo DS, I find that Kanji Dictionary: Kanji Sonomama Rakubiki Jiten is a great starter dictionary that allows you to directly input kanji for easy lookup. It's so much more convenient to write in a character than use the stroke order / radical lookup system of most web based dictionaries. The only thing is now stroke ORDER becomes pretty important for the software to register input correctly. So don't skimp on understanding proper stroke order. It is not the same just because it looks the same. (Although if your stroke order is out of whack, your Kanji will probably look out of order too from an native's perspective.) Kanji Sonomama Rakubiki Jiten

Ah, thanks, that makes a lot of sense. I can probably find similar sources for my field by going through all the technical documentation that's out there; I've already been doing a bit of very rough translation work for the company (slowly, and with a lot of help from WWWJDIC and the life-saving DS Kanji Dictionary), but hadn't considered it as a potential avenue for study.

Any tips for getting in some verbal conversation practice on short notice? I'm in the process to trying to find a tutor / conversation group in my area but a lot of the leads have fallen through.

u/zombicidalscientist · 1 pointr/gaming

Edit (for the lazy):

  • Professor Layton
  • Phoenix Wright
  • Myst
  • Dear Esther (not really a game)

Almost anything on the DS is a decent start if you have one. Professor Layton is an amazing series with some great puzzles to keep her thinking. There's no combat and no hard new control schemes to learn. Phoenix Wright is another fantastic series but there is some violence in the sense of "murder-mystery/crime" stuff to set up the cases you take and the puzzles you solve. Again, no combat here, it's exclusively puzzle solving.

As old as it is, Myst is another great game to show her (I think anyway) that encourages puzzle solving and reading. You can also get it for pretty cheap. Personally, I prefer realMyst because you get to roam freely but the Masterpiece Edition is truer to the original and doesn't force you to use first-person controls.

If you have a game that uses the Source engine you might want to get Dear Esther for her to look at. It's not so much a game as it is an interactive story told using a first person perspective. There's no combat or anything you simply walk around and explore an island. There's a bit of a ghost story aspect to it but it's not scary at all. It's closer to mysterious. Since TF2 is free you should be able to get Dear Esther to work without buying HL2 or anything like that.

While I really enjoy Portal and love Portal 2 I don't think they're necessarily good games for people new to gaming. The first-person perspective can be a HUGE barrier to entry especially for people that think of things like Mario when they think of games. Plus, if you're looking for a 'wonderful story' Portal's story doesn't really fit the bill (IMO). It's wonderful in the sense that it has wit and charm and some depth if you want to really over-interpret it but in the end it's a short game about escaping from a test facility.

You can easily play the other Final Fantasy games on your computer as well, though not through Steam. Square Enix just (like, yesterday) rereleased FF7 for the PC. You can buy that here for $10. FF7 is definitely one of the best FF games and probably RPGs ever made so this is a pretty good place for you to start.

The other FF games can be pretty easily played on your computer as well. You will need to download ROMs from a site like this one as well as an emulator. For FF 4, 5, and 6, you will find the ROMs in the SNES section, which can be played with ZSNES. You could also buy a 3D remake of FF4 for your DS. For FF 8 and 9 they are in the Playstation 1 section and can be played with pSX. The PS2 ones you should probably pay for but the older ones I doubt anyone cares too much since they aren't sold anymore. If you are unsure which to start with, start with 6, its the best.

Someone might recommend Breath of Death or Cthulhu Saves the World since they're the only turn based JRPGs on Steam I know of... don't bother. They've very cheap but very mediocre games and pretty much nothing like the FF games.

u/DioTheory · 1 pointr/Random_Acts_Of_Amazon

I am 100% in love with the whole Zelda series. Those were some of the first games I beat all the way to the end, and the story lines are all wonderful. I'd say my favorites of those have to be Skyward Sword and Ocarina of Time. Such wonderful stories, super fun dungeons, interesting items, just great games all around! :D

As for what I'd want from Amazon, I'm gonna have to go with Kingdom Hearts 358/2 Days. It's the only Kingdom Hearts game I haven't had the opportunity to play, and I desperately want to. I intend to get 1.5 Remix the day it's available, but watching a cinematic just isn't the same as actually playing the game for myself. <3

Also, Eggplant Wizard!! :D

Not sure what style of games you like, but if you're into Pokemon, you may like RPG-style games as well. I suggest you check out:

  • Dragon Quest IX - Man what a great game. I probably dropped 120 hours into this one (though it's possible to beat in far less time, there's just a TON of side quests)

  • Radient Historia - Another awesome game with old school appeal and new trick to keep you from getting bored. Considered by many DS RPG fans to be the spiritual successor to Chrono Trigger.

  • Retro Game Challenge - If you are a late 20's - early 30's gamer or you just like old school gaming style, this game will be amazing for you. I loved it!

  • Disgaea DS - I will forewarn you about this game. If you like the collection aspect of Pokemon, you will get LOST in this. I must have over 200 hours in it and I easily could have put another 800 (no joke) getting my characters to level 9999 (yup, it's possible)

Anyhow, those are my faves. There are so many others to list, but those four alone would keep you busy for years

It's supercute. It's a sequel to Okami (if you haven't played that, you need to. it's been released on a bunch of different systems, but originally for ps2).

In Okamiden, basically you are a wolfpup son of a goddess, and you travel around the land and learn special powers with the help of friends. Your powers are the ability to paint/draw (with your tail!) on the world to different effects--if you draw a line across enemies, you slash them, if you draw a circle around dead trees, you bring them back to life...stuff like that. And your friends have different abilities and help you solve puzzles to complete dungeons and defeat enemies.

It's a really charming game. Even though it is for DS, I will forever recommend it, because the gameplay utilizes the touchscreen SO WELL, and it is just adorable, really fun, and so so sweet. I totally cried at the end. <3

There are some tie-ins to the original game that you may miss if you haven't played it, but nothing that will prevent you from enjoying Okamiden on its own.

Here is a short little trailer so you can see what it looks like: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NP-n2xrqWH4

It is probably one of my favorite games on the DS family of systems. Top 5 for sure. It's very good.

Edit: It also has a silly sense of humor and doesn't take itself too seriously, which I appreciate. There are lots of lighthearted moments and dumb groaner jokes peppered throughout. It's really great. I replay it every few years because it is just that good. If you can find it for a good price, it is totally worth it. It's on amazon for under $30, which I think is a good price for it :https://www.amazon.com/Okamiden-nintendo-ds/dp/B003IOGPAO/ref=sr_1_1?s=videogames&ie=UTF8&qid=1522293140&sr=1-1&keywords=okamiden&dpID=61KrFn5BvGL&preST=_SX300_QL70_&dpSrc=srch

American here: When I went to the UK I brought along a USB to 3DS charging port cable. While the chargers themselves use either 110v or 220v, the system itself needs 4.6v to charge. USB ALWAYS delivers 5v of power and the .4v isn't enough to harm the system. Therefore, since my laptop's power supply worked with 110 AND 220v, I just brought my laptop, (foreign power adapter for the tip), and USB cables to charge our phones and 3DS.

EDIT: Here's a link to the cable that I got. Works like a charm. I got a few and always keep one with me.

As a former 2ds owner, if you're totally fine with potential lag in terms of loading times (for example, when you boot up pokemon S&M it takes a pretty long time), and 3D is not a must, then I say go for it. for me even upgrading to a new 3ds, i rarely use 3D.

Sure, a new 3DS has better performance, 3D effects, can fold, and amiibo support, but to me those are all just pluses or luxuries, not necessities. It can also play games like Monster Hunter and the upcoming FE Warriors game, but those aren't really must have titles imo

Battery life is pretty similar. in terms of comfort, I got this exact case.
I never would feel comfortable putting even a new 3DS in my pocket anyway so carrying it in my backpack was no biggie. Holding it is no problem either. Actually, when I held a new 3ds it felt so weird cuz I was so used to holding my 2ds.

tl;dr go for the 2ds bundle. you won't regret it. if you really want a new 3ds save up money for when a really good deal comes out in the future on black friday or something.

I bought this and am quite happy with it. This can store everything you mentioned with room to spare and is quite affordable

Hello All,

What is the consensus on using powered usb c adapters instead of a dock? Does it make a difference if you use an official power supply?

Something like this: https://smile.amazon.com/Adapter-Nintendo-Compatible-MacBook-Samsung/dp/B07DYHJYDW/ref=cm_cr_arp_d_product_top?ie=UTF8

Thank you!

I’ve been considering getting something like this for when I’m on the go so I can hookup to a friends tv.
