I am guessing she means "crispy" or "french fried" onions, which is a pre-made product often put on (green bean) casseroles.

Just follow recipes until you develop an intuition and you'll be amazed by how much progress you make!
Are you sure about that?
There are ways to get the onion flavor (which is pretty good in something like this) without any actual onions; dry onions are a big improvement (I just used that particular brand the other day), and it looks like onion powder would also work (no personal experience with onion powder, though I'd like to try it the next time I need an onion). For both of those, you should probably find a smaller/cheaper container locally, at least to start with. They should both have direct equivalencies to real onions on the package; the one linked to for dry onions is 2 tablespoons for every half cup of "real" onions, for example.
Buy an instapot pressure cooker and get some dried beans of all varieties. Pair the beans with rice and you have a complete protein! I am in romantic love with my pressure cooker. I'd recommend making chili in it right off the bat. (You'll need diced tomatoes, beans, onion, chipotle peppers and chili or taco seasoning. Split pea soup is also stupid easy and very affordable.
You can also get a seed sprouter and the seeds for it for some produce in your diet. I also like sprouting mungbeans. And it's getting a little late in the season to plant I think but consider starting a tomato plant.
A few of my favorites:

I love my chili hot and sweet. I saw a recipe on a morning news show I wish I would have wrote down. The guy claimed he won a chili cook off with it and he referred to it as "instant Chilli" since it could be made in like 20-25 mins.
The main ingredients were a large can of regular Bush's Baked beans and a large Jar of a Garden blend Spaghetti sauce. About a 1/4 cup of those dried Onion flakes. About a pound of ground beef (or turkey). Than chili powder to taste.
That's about the most I can remember, and of course this wasn't a "recipe" this was just the ingredients.
My favorite chili for sure.
Lol no, “can” but really a plastic container. It’s all dry, think more like a potato chip than an actual onion product.

You can search for flavorings and powder and find some. I know they sell Cheetos powder (nutritional yeast is a good alternative as well).
https://www.amazon.com/Sour-Cream-Onion-Seasoning-Powder/dp/B015QNFQPE/ for example. They have several flavors. Don't know the company, and never purchased from them, and it might be cheaper and more versatile to mix your own.
