I think I'd like a roman Gladius.

Edit: I want to get this for home defense some day. Small enough for more maneuverability, sharp enough to gut a motherfucker three times over, and very intimidating.

u/kazoodac · 17 pointsr/zelda

Here's the breakdown as I see it:

Barring getting a blacksmith to make you you the real deal for thousands and thousands of dollars, the best you could do would be to buy this guy's handmade replicas: He doesn't always have ebay auctions up though, and some times his work will turn up for sale elsewhere.

EDIT: Aaron of Fiberglass Blades is stopping production so that he can move on to bigger and better things. There will be a few auctions for what remains of his inventory this year, but don't expect to pay less than $1000 a piece for each item.

If you are looking for the cheaper mass produced kinds, there are still several to pick from, and even then you need to decide if what you want is more for display or if you actually intend to carry it. None of these are combat safe in any way, but some still are better than others.

A disclaimer about these links: all of these can be found from multiple sellers at multiple prices, so do your shopping! I'm using amazon for picture purposes.

The best one for display in my opinion is this one here. The hilt and blade look fantastic, and it comes with a plaque. It is not good for swinging though; it is very heavy and is most likely not full tang, aka the blade does not continue into the hilt. That said, it is a beautiful piece for the price, and I have one on my wall. It seems to be based off of a mixture of the Link to the Past and Twilight Princess Master Sword designs, as it has barbs, but is not blue in color. There are newer versions of this same sword modeled after the blue master sword and a Dark Link Variant, but I avoided the former because I don't like how the entire handle is one shade of blue. That's your call.

Next up is this one, which is probably the most common. The blade is long, but does not have that awesome shape that the above one does. In my opinion, it does not look as much like the master sword as it ought. The upside to this though it that the sheathe is the best one going in terms of mass produced pieces. I am cosplaying as link at Otakon this weekend, and will be using the sheathe from this sword, attached to this belt that was basically made for this model.

The sword I will be using is this one. I know what you are thinking. Foam? Really? Yes. This is a relatively new product and is of far better quality than I could have expected or even hoped for. It is cosplay safe, light, and the best shape/size/detail/quality replica I have found for the price. if you plan on carrying one without getting arrested, this is the one.

There is another master sword replica out there that you need should watch out for. this one looks very similar to the second one above, but you will notice the blade looks mildly different in the photos. In truth, this one is far smaller than the above one, and is also sharp as hell. Can not recommend. Check the details like blade length and width before buying.

As for the shields, there are thankfully fewer options. As mentioned above, Fiberglassblades makes an amazing one, but it's super expensive. I'd like to own his shield and sword one day, but it will not be anytime soon.

Your mass produced choices as far as I can see are this one or this one

I have the first one, and it is a decent replica for the price. It is set to be held in your left hand, though you can remove the handle, so I expect you could modify it for more accurate use. It is also ready to be hung on a wall, and looks quite nice while doing so. Older models are more flat, while newer models are more curved like traditional shields (unless mine is just warped.) The Downsides are that the strap and handle are rather flimsy. I have reinforced the one I'm using this weekend by making my own leather strap and super gluing the handle in place. This will sadly prevent me from using this shield as a display, but I have an older model for that.

As for the second one, it looks to be a newer version of an earlier and different model. I don't have experience with it, but from what I can tell it seems to be a high quality replica. That said, the model I believe it is based on was not able to be hung on a wall, had the triforce crooked, had the bird painted on and not embossed, and could only be used in your right hand. Perhaps this is why they are pushing this new version. If you get this one, please let me know how it is, because I must say it looks good from the photos.

EDIT: Another user has reported to me that this model still has the issues I had with the earlier version. Neither the Crimson Loftwing nor the Triforce are guaranteed to be accurately placed. This may vary from shield to shield, so buyer beware.

PHEW! Hope that helps!

That's a riding crop. Like this one.

u/arglebargle2 · 14 pointsr/washingtondc

I agree with your assessment.

I am a man who wants to get home as trouble free and intact as possible each day. It depends on the number of kids and the size of the kids I guess. The second you step in, you become the focus of their harassment.

I'd probably not step in unless they actually started beating on her.

I'm not sure what people think 1 person can do against 6 teens who don't give a crap.

And the prospect of being arrested/going to jail/being sued for any intervention also comes into the picture.

If I was riding the metro often in the stops where this kind of thing was happening regularly I'd probably buy one of these to use as a keychain.

Gonna jump onto gabedamien's comment for a moment here.

You can buy a AISI 1045 carbon steel katana, for $50 USD off Amazon right now. THAT is how common "functional" swords are available these days.

So if you want a "true" katana, as in something that looks like one, you can draw and swing around, and proudly hang on your wall or carry around with you, there you go.

As Gabe said, art-grade nihonto with the patterned hamon and the silk wrappings and the authentic look of everything vary in price and are actually affordable to the general public. It's just like buying a painting or a sculpture, only you get a sword instead.

SF is safe enough for the most part. The most crucial advice is common sense. For instance, If you can, avoid dark alleyways at night. Try to keep to well lit areas if walking alone in the evening. Always be aware of you surroundings (keep your head up), and don't feel too self conscious about the social awkwardness of crossing the street, or even changing direction, to avoid those who appear to pose a threat. If you're gonna be walking around alone in the evening on a regular basis, a basic self defense course might behoove you. My old lady carries around one of these: http://amzn.com/B001T6J15O. It's legal and luckily it's very likely you'll never have to use it.

You need to wrap your hands and wrists before you hit the bag. Try something like THIS

u/Mapes · 6 pointsr/bodyweightfitness

Bought these for $25 and they work fine, in case you don't have the tools to make your own rings.

u/badfishnow · 6 pointsr/Fitness

A pair of rings from Amazon can make your door frame bar a lot more versatile. From the /r/bodyweightfitness beginner routine: Ring dips, ring pushups, and horizontal rows. I wrapped my cheap plastic rings in bicycle handlebar tape to make them more comfortable and increase grip. Total with the door frame bar, rings, and tape was about $50. Completely worth it!

I'm not a boxer, but I did end up buying a heavy bag with some gloves and wrist wraps a few months ago, just to get a different form of cardio. It get's the job done really well.

when looking for gloves, I ended up buying these, and they been pretty good so far. Everlast boxing gloves

from my experience, protecting your wrists/knuckles is the most important part, so make sure you get yourself some wraps. I got some pretty small hands, and yet 120" is barely enough to wrap both my wrist and knuckles, so I suggest you get the 180" wraps. wrist wraps

u/thesnakeinthegarden · 3 pointsr/MMA

There are some issues in how to practice these sorts of techniques. In more violent times, these techniques were used by soldiers, who might have actually gotten opportunities to poke eyes out of there sockets. Nowadays, that isn't so practical, but we train for accuracy and hard resistance a lot of the time. I actually use eye gouging techniques on a bob which might not let me work on the finer points of eyes scooping (i guess that's what it would be called) but as we've seen in numerous mma fights, you don't have to poke an eye hard to hurt a guy and it's easy enough that you can do it by accident. I have yet to break my fingers on any work on eye striking but I also, and I'm thankful for this, actually, don't really know how effective it would be in an actual fight since I've never done in an actual fight. I did break my finger doing a single leg takedown before. And i savagely sprained my wrist on a savage right cross that I threw from too far away. The possibility of injury due to a poorly done strike or sub is present in most martial techniques and should not be too big of a guideline in choosing a techniques value.

u/Spear99 · 3 pointsr/martialarts

I haven't been downvoting you for the most part. Just your initial comment. Since then I've upvoted you on everything just because you're willing to discuss this and didn't turtle the way most people do.

I appreciate the sentiment in regards to my Sensei. It was quite the blow the community since he was a well known figure and role model.

I always enjoy conversations on Reddit. My main concern is that I truly believe that unless you're doing some hardcore sparring to complement your eye gouges and groin kicks, I'm legitimately concerned for your safety, because you are simply not as prepared as you think you are.

Referring to eye gouges from grappling, this gets even more nasty. If you don't grapple consistently, you're going to have a rough time. I'd recommend you have some randori with a BJJ player or a Judoka if the opportunity ever arises. An essential aspect of grappling for them is grip fighting, so you won't likely have a "free hand" so to speak to gouge with. It's incredibly hard to grapple effectively against someone who knows what they are doing.

You're right that against an untrained opponent, absolutely a great deal of techniques will work, including techniques that wouldn't work in the ring, but ask yourself this: Do you want to train to fight the bare minimum? Or would you rather be over prepared for the common dweeb who gets drunk and picks a fight in case you ever run into one of the hardened criminals who has picked up how to fight from years of fighting from when he was very young and is a legitimately good brawler? It's totally fine to say "well most untrained assailants won't be able to guard effectively against a kick, but as you say yourself:

>if I ever find myself fighting a trained opponent in a no-rules, life or death situation, and he is effectively blocking groin strikes, then I am in serious trouble and I need to reevaluate the life decisions that got me there.

I'd prefer to train to fight the competent dude, so that if I find myself in that same no-rules situation, I don't need to reconsider my life decisions. A pretty common saying is "you need to understand the rules before you can break them". And the same applies for fighting. A punch or a kick is following the rules, and both are very effective, but you need to become very competent with them before you focus in on illegal techniques because if and when illegal techniques fail, you need a foundation to fall back on that will serve you well.

In regards to one step sparring and katas. They are useful, but only so far as you practice them in sparring. My Sensei would routinely choose a kata that we would study, learn the bunkai (application) of the kata, and then start practicing that kata in full contact sparring. For nasty moves, we would break them down into their parts and practice them. Using an eye gouge for example. The actual motion of an eye gouge is exactly the same as a punch. Only difference is what your fingers are doing at the end of your arm. So we would practice punching the snot out of each other in sparring so we knew that regardless of what our hand is doing, we can still reach the face. Then on a lifelike training dummy such as bob we could practice the actual action of gouging the eye.

To my knowledge, there's no such thing as a mass produced metal Hylian Shield. If you want one you'll have to make it yourself or have one custom made, which would likely be quite expensive. This is about as good as it gets. Sorry.

In a perfect world, you'll want a pair of 35's, a pair of 25's, two pairs of tens, a pair of 5's, and a pair of 2.5's, in addition to the 45's listed. Obviously, you can make do without, but those increments make progressive overload a bit easier.

> Note: I live in FL and the place doesn't have a screen patio. It will be on grass. Should I buy a large gazebo of some sort? Additional suggestions please.

Well, I'd imagine that it'll last longer if it's not rained on and you probably want to keep dry when you have a 300lb bar on your back. I know I would. Heck, a sturdy tent might work, depending on the weather you get down there.

Also, if you don't have any, get some chalk. Doesn't have to be fancy, just chalk.

I just have a piece of wood as my target, like you can buy from the home depot. Just don't use plywood, use solid wood.

As for knives, i would recommend blue angel 6 inch throwing knives, or this

u/refraction_ · 2 pointsr/Fitness

If you want to keep your hands callous-free, you're better off getting some straps. Yeah you're missing out in grip development blah blah, but as long as you're only using them once your grip starts to fail it'll still continue to develop.

Gloves aren't as good because it adds an extra layer to slide and rub between your hands and the bar. Doing something like heavy deadlifts with gloves can end up leaving your hands a lot worse off than if you hadn't used anything at all.

Your other option is to just spend a few dollars on something chalk-related. If you really want to keep your hands smooth then $7 on a chalk ball like this isn't a big cost. Get that, some regular chalk, whatever. Just file down your callouses /moisturise your hands sometimes and you shouldn't have much of a problem.

u/Snapop23 · 2 pointsr/secretsanta

Are these gloves serviceable for use on a 70 lb bag? They came in the kit I bought. Ill be using it on my first bag and thought 70lb would be good to practice my form on and etc before moving on up heavier. If it matters I am 210lbs.

I'm a beginner as well. I have both Everlast handwraps and off brand handwraps. Both do the job fine. Remember to wrap your hands and wrist well to prevent wrist injury.

I have Ringside IMF Techs and they're great, but pricey. Plenty of good options out there, check out /r/boxing and search for glove recommendations.

My bag is an Everlast C3 Foam bag, which is supposedly one of Everlast's higher end bags. It's been about a month and it's holding up fine. Ringside and Title make decent bags, too. I also have the Everlast bag stand, which is noisy and creaky, but it does the job.

I have Everlast bag gloves, entry model, that I usually use for mitts and when traveling. You can orient the controllers however(ring up on thumb or down under pinky), I prefer this way for a realistic block and punch deflection. Just be sure to calibrate your gloves in game and you're good to go.

These are probably closest to my old school ones that Everlast makes now. www.amazon.com/dp/B000JF4HP0/ Title boxing still makes traditional leather ones if you're willing to pay a little more for the quality.

Lastly since my username is Zelda related I should include one of the Zelda related items on my list.

u/guttermonkey · 2 pointsr/Random_Acts_Of_Amazon

The zombies ate my brains yet I was able to come up with a couple items:

  • Cricket Bat - not necessarily unusual thanks to Shawn of the Dead, but unusual to own in the US. Would be great for smashing heads.
  • Sickle - not quite as good for range, but would be good for beheading.
  • A Spear would be good to keep them at range and run less risk of a bite.
  • You could be a badass like Tyrese in the Walking Dead comic and use a regular old Claw Hammer
  • Some leather forearm guards would be good for reducing your chance of a bite while using any melee weapons.
  • You could also go all Dead Rising and carry around a stack of traffic cones to slap on their heads...

Gotta get back to work, but thanks for this it was amusing...

Make sure that you purchase wraps that are 180 inches in length. Don't trust anything that doesn't list a length. Also, 100% cotton wraps are not what you want. You will want elastic cotton wraps (they will stretch a bit, giving a tighter fit and allowing more flexibility while maintaining good support), also called mexican style wraps. These are the wraps I use, and I wouldn't get anything else.

I bought the three tomahawk brand knives on sale, about a dollar a piece not including shipping. Now everything people say about the quality is true. However at a dollar a knife, they were ideal for me as my first throwing knives.

Because they were so cheap, it wasn't the end of the world to bend or damage one due to my poor throwing as a beginner. They certainly 'worked' as far as throwing knives, but even as a beginner you feel like you wish you had a better quality knife in your hand.

Bottom Line: Can't beat the price for what you get, but as expected they aren't worth much unless you're learning and don't want to damage a good knife.

Cheapest solution is usually going to be rings.

That makes Rows easy to handle, however ring dips are kinda hard, because they add the need for core stability on the rings.

Well, the simplest solution for that is one of these., either the purple or the green one. With those rubber bands you can do this: http://www.kingofthegym.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/02/band-assisted-dips.jpg (Only with rings) To make the dips assisted in the beginning.

Generally I would aim for 15 assissted dips, before you should comfortably be able to do 3 or more without the band.

u/erscha · 1 pointr/bleach

have to define legit. they are "real" but made with stainless steel and not sharpened. basically just for decoration. so it is a "real" sword made of metal and all but if you ever tried to use it the blade would probably bend immediately. if you want something sharp and less likely to bend i would recommend one of these (www.amazon.com/Classic-Crane-Handmade-Samurai-Katana/dp/B002WGEE48/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1412802756&sr=8-1&) just a little more expensive. not bleach related but you can feel like its your own Zanpakuto. P.S a tip in sword quality when looking at lower prices is any kind of carbon blade like this is a huge step above stainless steel, its basically what makes it a usable sword. not masterfully made but is sharp, less likely to bend, and made to last longer than display blades.

u/Choogly · 1 pointr/Katanas

Don't do it.

u/JanewayForPresident · 1 pointr/bodyweightfitness

Eventually you’ll want a bar or rings (rings work great for the rows too), but you may be able to find something in the meantime. Some stairs work if you can get under and behind them. Or a 2x4 on the ceiling of an unfinished basement. The best option is rings though, assuming you can find a spot to hang them. If you happen to have resistance bands, you can attach them overhead and mimic the pull-up motion.

I’ve been really happy with these rings.

Though I hope to high hell that you never need these bits of information; keyes make an ideal improvised self defence weapon

There's also something to be said about a tightly rolled newspaper. A tip my uncle taught my sister and I from his misspent youth. When a newspaper (or magazine) is rolled up tightly. A strike to the throat or head will hurt enough to give you time to run. It won't hold up to prolonged use, but for a split second weapon, it'll do the job. It's an old football/soccer hooligan trick, because the police can't stop you from carrying a newspaper.

if all else fails, think like a Squirrel, and go for the nuts. While I have my legs clenched tightly whilst typing this. A knee to the groin, or if you're extra desperate, doing a reverse Donald Trump. Just grasp those bollocks, and twist, if the pain of his abused nuts isn't enough to deter him, the thought that you might do worse will be. EDIT: it works on all parts that dangle, if you grab at a womans breasts and give them a damn good twist, then she'll be just as eager to leave you alone.

EDIT:

Also consider buying something like this. They work best on pressure points, and that means that they are designed to hurt, but not to injure. Neck, shoulder, wrist, elbow, groin, or places like that. If used alongside a swift knee to the gonads, you have enough time to make an escape.

These are all last options though, You did the right thing by deassing the area as fast as you and your dog could go.

Been adding Heavy Bag into HIIT workouts and after a couple weeks decided I'd like to break the bank for some proper wraps and bag gloves. Haven't been able to find a good store nearby, but online selection is pretty good: they have about 3-4 different sets each from TITLE, Ringside, Hayabusa, Venum and Cleto Reyes. Was wondering if I could get some recommendations for those brands.

-8.7'' wrist, looking for 16oz gloves

-Flexible for price, $150/1100rmb max

-6in1ft, weigh about 210 pounds (hence the workout!)

-Training/bag only going 2-3 times a week.

Based on some research/recommendations been looking at this set in particular:

Hayabusa Tokushu

Also choosing between these wraps, not really sure what to look for other than 180 inch.

Fairtex

Ringside

Everlast

Revgear

Thanks in advance!

But you say that you must have gifted at least once? I'm confuzzed.

I have gifted three people and have yet to be gifted, at least to my knowledge..no one's posted that there's something on my way and I've yet to receive anything :p

This is my NSFW list and this is an item under $10 that's on it! Spankalicious.

Never been gifted, nbd!

no need to buy those. Those 25 dollar or 30 dollar ones do just fine. The straps work great, you just have to thread them the right way.

Just get wood, I made the mistake of starting with plastic ones then needing to buy wood ones after I advanced cause the plastic has shit grip.

There are two thicknesses. If you have big hands buy the thicker ones, small then buy thinner. But it doesn't really matter. My plastic ones were fig(smaller), but mine now are the thicker crossfit ones and I can't really tell a difference.

If you got 50 bucks and amazon prime you can get it! I bought the same one and my only issue was the gold bit at the top of the sheath coming out with the sword, but some super glue fixed that

I've been using a parachute (a cheap on I bought here) I usually sprint about 5x50m then I do 3x50m and release the chute at 20m. After I'll do 5x40m sprints without the chute with full rest in between sets. I've felt an improvement in my speed but it's still a work in progress. I've also been doing power cleans and other power lifting exercises to build hip power, which I'm sure has contributed, as well.
I hope some of this helps! Good luck!

This was where I got my first crop. I love it! It's held up really well to use and it freaking hurts when swung right. Or you can just lightly hit with the tip for some nice light sensations. I believe its from a legit riding/tack company. Added bonus, if you have a cat it also makes a really awesome cat toy, mine likes to drag the crop around the house.

I think for you or for your kids (I grew up on loony toons and roger rabbit and every kid needs to watch this movie at LEAST once.)

Then for me, I want to say these because they're fun and I could wear them at work, but the more reasonable, realist side of me says I need this more because my cat is a furbeast and his regular slicker brush just isn't hacking it this year.

Thanks for the contest!

Thanks!

I bought these on Amazon Doesn't get much better for $23.50.

They obviously have much more expensive ones. People argue wooden ones are the best. But I just wrapped mine up with some athletic tape and they are perfect for the money. And they are super easy to hang from a tree, play set or from the rafters in an attic.

As far as plans go, I have absolutely zero history of gymnastics or ring training. I basically have just browsed around on YouTube watching ring/gymnast training videos. Nothing to specific. But as of now, I only use the rings pull-ups and false grip holds. Because honestly this is all I can do at this point. To me, it kinda seems that you should have a foundation of being able to do a 60 second false grip hold. Here's a quick tutorial And also be able to do around ~15-20 pull-ups before attempting other stuff. Right now I can only get about 8 pull-ups max.

I plan to invest in a training program but have not found one I like yet. I will of course update you when/if I do.

Good luck!

u/dontforgetpants · 1 pointr/Fitness

Seems like a good plan if your schedule won't allow for consistent gym time. I would recommend getting a removable pull-up bar like this rather than a screw-in one, if you don't already have a bar, and then get a ring set that you can hang off of it for your lying-down rows (and dips!). Also, if you have the money to spare, you can do a lot with an adjustable dumbbell set - lots of upper body isolation work obviously, but also things like dumbbell snatches, lunges, bulgarian split squats, single leg deadlifts, etc.

Is there a normal amount of chalk you're supposed to use? I just bought this and, having never used chalk before, I don't want to dump a ton of chalk on my hands. Is there a good amount to use or best way to put it on your hands?

u/bwfmoron · 1 pointr/bodyweightfitness

There are quite few high-rated wooden rings listed. I recently bought a second pair of these ones. I'm sure other 4+ stars ones are just as good.

u/ComradeRikhi · 1 pointr/bodyweightfitness

Gymnastic Rings, you'll use them for things like support holds, rows, pushups, etc.

If you really want to treat yourself, you could get some chalk to help your grip on the rings(although you don't really need it till more advanced moves), a foam roller, or massage stick - but none of those are necessary to get started.

u/mvk_iii · 1 pointr/bodyweightfitness

I just ordered these. I looked around a bit and it seems that rings are rings. You can spend $70+ and get Rogue Fitness rings or you can spend less and try your luck.

Haha I've been looking at my Master Sword replica
a lot lately waiting for these to arrive. When they did arrive and I finally opened up the sword's box I exclaimed, "Now that is a Master Sword!"

u/superpony123 · 1 pointr/Fitness

Buy some gym chalk!. I cant believe I deadlifted for so long without it. Essentially same story as you. It massively helps with grip. You'd be surprised. Chalk those paws up.

Also, do farmers walks. this will seriously improve your grip. If your gym has a hex bar, this will be the best way to do it (you can do it with dumbbells or kettlebells too, but the grips on the hex bars are as close as youll get to that on a barbell, plus you dont have to deal with the weights bumping into your legs)

Lastly, try using a mixed grip for heavier DLs. This is very common especially for powerlifters pulling reaaaally heavy DLs. I use double overhand as much as I can but above 185 (dont laugh I'm only a 5' lady haha, my max is 215 right now) I usually switch to mixed -though I am working on improving the weight at which I use double overhand. But for weights close to max I'll prob always use mixed grip. Try seeing what is more comfortable, which hand is underhand I mean. For me, left hand is underhand and right is overhand. Just see what feels "right" to you.

grip strength comes with time and isn't always as fast as your actual muscular development. Your hands and forearms have to get stronger too but they are significantly shorter and smaller muscles compared to the hamstrings and glutes and back muscles you use dead lifting. They will grow they just take more time to show significant gains.

I bought this one: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B001I87WMC/ref=oh_details_o04_s00_i00 and it's beautiful and is quite sturdy especially for your use. And only $40!

Pull up bar and rings. I have been using these rings for over a month now and they are doing well. I bought the cheapest I could find.
you could use your 25lbs dumbells for goblet squats.
