Basically there are two parts to a Freak barrel kit system: A barrel and an insert. Sometimes the barrel is broken into a front and a back, but generally it's the barrel and insert.

The size you're seeing when you order is just one insert, included with the barrel. The kit itself would be the barrel combined with a variety of inserts. Any barrel bored for Freak inserts, such as the Deadly Winds Carbon Fiber, a very popular choice, is considered compatible.

Without an insert, a Freak-bored barrel is not functional.

So why use a barrel-sizing system? A Freak insert allows you to make a barrel match the size of the paintball you are using that day. If the ball just fits in the insert so that you can blow it out with a light puff of air from your mouth, it ensures that air hits each similar paintball in exactly the same way every time you fire. This improves the straightness of your shot. Plus, it keeps the ball from tumbling around the barrel and coming out randomly.

There are a lot of other variables that affect straightness of shot, including roundness of the ball, wind, and consistency of your marker, but sizing your paint goes a long way.

There are other barrel kit systems, too, like the Empire Barrel Kit or even [the TechT] (http://www.hustlepaintball.com/TechT-Paintball-iFIT-Universal-Barrel-Sizer-Kit-9-Piece-Kit). But Freaks are the most common.

I bought a Salvo from a user here. While I love it, it is very heavy. I use it with an HPA tank on my back which comes with it's own problems. Remote line getting in the way, bulky vest to support the tank, but I do get to feel all military tacticool. Being a heavy chunk of metal it is durable as fuck and has taken a beating including a couple of core samples and doesn't have any issues. What people are saying about inaccuracy I don't get. Not sure if it's inconsistency in build quality as Tippmann products are known to be built like bricks, but mine is accurate as hell.

That all being said, I love my Salvo even if it is a reskinned heavier 98 Custom. I would not recommend spending $200+ on a bundle, nor would I recommend CO2. If you want to get the salvo get it by itself, used would be best as even if it's taken a beating it can handle it. Get the other stuff separate.

  • Vest or pack, usually comes with some pods
  • Hopper you should get the basic with the marker or can spring for something fancier
  • Remote line if you want to go that route
  • HPA over CO2 definitely
  • Barrel swab, I'd recommend this guy

If you do want to go with the Salvo and want to know what I've got I can send links or if you have other questions just ask. :)

No. That's spyder threads. It's the right barrel, but wrong threads.

Here's the Amazon link for the right threads.

Honestly, play with it before you get a new barrel. If you feel that you want it 2" longer, then get it. Don't buy anything for a marker you have yet to play with.
