If you follow the safety rules, paintball is extremely safe. You'll end the day with a couple of minor welts, but that's about it.

The field will likely go over their specific safety rules, but in general, if you're in the netted off area of play, do not take your mask off for any reason, including the game being over.

If you're outside the field, make sure you have your barrel cover on, they'll look like this and be given to you when you rent your marker.

As a reference point to what it feels like to get shot, I usually tell people to take there index and middle finger and smack them against your forearm as hard as you can. It's a quick little sting and then it's mildly tender for a couple minutes. What I'll do when I bring out my friends is walk 25-30 yards downfield and let them shoot me once, and I'll shoot them once. Just so that they're familiar with what it feels like and it isn't really a shock when they're out there. And I let them shoot me because everyone has massive ego's and don't want to get shot for nothing.

On the clothing side, I'd say grab the most beat up jeans that you own that are on their very last leg, and then a long sleeve shirt, thicker is better but that can vary with the weather.

And it's part of the refs job to try and keep the teams as balanced as possible, there are going to be some rental players on both sides. As far as tips, keep your head up, try and keep your silhouette as small as possible, communicate with your team.

But really the best thing you can be doing to help your team is to have fun! Paintball is a freaking blast to play. Go out, shoot some people, get the adrenaline up a little bit, get some welts, and take home some stories.

I always use dow-corning no. 33. It's a paintball(my other hobby) lubricant for orings. Lowe's should have it or similar.

One of these is what I use for my A-5. Highly recommend. Cheap, and nice to be able to quickly clean the barrel out during a round without having to take the barrel off.
