I made this guide because the selection for bags that actually fit the HTC Vive well are either poorly constructed, overpriced, or both. The only case actually intended for the Vive I could find was this overpriced monstrocity, and this, even more overpriced, even larger monstrocity. So I did some digging, tried out a few things, and made this guide.

Windows Mixed Reality will automatically track and recognize different rooms that you've set up, as long as things haven't changed too much since the last time it saw it.

My Odyssey is on an Alienware 17R4 that I move between multiple locations, and I almost never have to setup the rooms again. I just wave the headset around a bit when I start the WMR portal and let it scan across the room and floor and it almost always automatically recognizes the room and restores my boundaries.

Even if it says it couldn't match the room and prompts for setup, it's actually still looking and matching, so don't give up immediately, wave it around a bit more, and it might still pick up the old scan.

If you need a long cable run between rooms, I suggest buying a Vive Link Box and power supply, and use it in the middle of the cable run to boost the signal and power. And also use active extensions cables.

  1. Vive Link Box
  2. Vive Link Box Power Supply

Make sure you power cycle the Vive Link Box whenever you plug or unplug anything into it to for it to reinitialize and detect the headset.

You'll probably want a little extension if you're going to be swapping devices alot, I use HTC's official one

But if you're allergic to spending ~$10.00 you could probably shave down the connector of one you have lying around the house until it fits into the Vive's compartment.

I have over 300 hours in an Oculus Rift. Actually, I have three Oculus Rifts, because I accidentally dropped and broke two of them. (Not a design fault per se, I was just careless twice. If you drop it on a hard surface from 5 feet up, it WILL shatter the screen.) I also possess a HTC Vive--which is in a box on the shelf.

I decided to try this "VR thing" when I found a good deal on a used Oculus. It blew me away. Holy crap. I dove so deep that I decided to also get a Vive, to play around with them both and possibly sell whichever one I didn't want.

What I found is that the Vive controllers are obnoxiously heavy and unwieldy, especially with my favorite game, Beat Saber. I felt like I was swinging cleavers around. By comparison, the Oculus Rift touch controllers were more balanced around my palm. Especially in my "Beat Saber grip", which I found was easier to play with if I moved my fingers up into the ring until the outer ring rests against my knuckles. This centers the weight of the controller squarely in my palm, and makes it so that I can swing the controllers faster than humanly possible.

Either of the headsets will do pretty good tracking. However, I do strongly recommend getting a third sensor, regardless of which set you choose--adding another sensor DRAMATICALLY helps with tracking for any game that requires you to turn around, and even helps with tracking on games that you face forward but sometimes your hands go in weird angles. Set the sensors in a triangle formation around the room.

I can go over cons of both if you want, but my absolute endorsement is going to go to the Oculus Rift, based primarily on the controllers. The controllers are your window into the world, and the Rift Touch controllers are phenomenal digital extensions of your physical hand. The controllers are BY FAR the most important thing to consider when choosing a headset. And, when the next-gen headsets come out, I will be making my choice based solely on the controllers.

A few things you will want to accessorize with if you pick the Rift. You'll notice that half of these are to keep your equipment clean--this is a lot more important than you think at first.

  • Wear a sweatband if you're going to play any physically demanding game, like Beat Saber. You'll get sweaty. You don't want to get sweat all over your headset.
  • Baby wipes or makeup remover wipes, use on all smooth skin/hair contact surfaces (headset harness, handsets) after each session.
  • Get this washable faceplate cover, or two of them, and wash them regularly. Guests to your Oculus will thank you. :\
  • Get disposable foam earpiece covers for the same reason.
  • Get a AA battery charger and some good rechargeable batteries.
  • Get a third sensor (mentioned above)
  • If you want to mount the sensors on your wall, either buy or 3D print these.
  • Get a USB 3.0 extension cable and an HDMI extension cable so you don't have to worry about the cord length.

There are kits out there to let you suspend the cord from the ceiling, but I feel like that's overkill--I always just have it run between my legs to the computer. I can feel it against my lower leg or calf and know where it is so I don't trip. Note that this is fine for beat saber, but for games where you are turning around constantly, it may be a problem. The main thing is to have plenty of slack on your cord so if you trip you don't yank something, you can really damage the USB cord if you yank it at an angle. If you can somehow pin the cable against or under furniture so that a hard yank does not tug at your USB port, even better.

Finally: some games are a goddamn workout, like Beat Saber. Treat these games like you would treat cardio: stretch beforehand, warm up, drink water, have a towel nearby, and have a fan on you. AND KEEP YOUR EQUIPMENT CLEAN.

Can't say I agree but to each their own.

Have you tried the Vive Link Box? I've heard that people have extended their Rift length with it.

Maybe this youtube video can help. Also make sure you have your latest BIOS for your motherboard and of course drivers. I got a 2700x this year and had tons of usb issues with the Rift which was weird since it ran fine on my old pc. Turned out I just needed to upgrade my bios.

I found some on Amazon and they work neatly well. Low profile and sturdy.

Probably want to buy one of these. I own one for this exact reason. You'll occasionally get the Headset connection issues, which requires you to power-cycle the Vive Link Box to fix.

Glad someone else had the same idea I had. I actually started selling them on amazon How did you attach the wii wrist straps to the inside of the controllers?

u/cavortingwebeasties · 3 pointsr/oculus

I use a Vive Link Box to extend the headset. I like this approach because it does not really matter what cables you use because it's an active repeater with its own psu and it's made with VR in mind.

I use it as a breakout box to connect my puter in the bedroom to my Rift in the living room. I'm also using the displayport (dp to mini dp cable) connection on the Link, freeing up my limited hdmi for my projector. It's nice to be able to plug into an dedicated ports in an attractive component sitting nicely on a shelf whenever I want to use it.

Link Box

psu

For sensors I found the ugreen active 3.0 extensions recommended on this sub to work very well (meaning they do not revert to USB2.0).

u/JimNazalcavity · 3 pointsr/Vive

I had the same problem with my Vive. First, I tried to replace the cable with the 3-in-1 and it did not fix the problem.

For me it was the link box that fixed it for me. $30 on amazon:

A few things:

  • Please be specific about what you did to fix your issue. It's a personal pet peeve of mine, but I hate looking for the solution to a problem, finding my exact problem listed, only to see the comment "Never mind, I tried something and it worked!" AARRGGHH!! What did you try? :-) Future readers searching on Inspiron or Max Q may thank you. Maybe even put it as a separate thread? It won't be highly upvoted, but it will be more searchable.

  • This is the HTC Link Box. It extends the HDMI and headset's USB port, giving you a bit more cable length and acts as a powered adapter (taking some power load off your system. Note that it does not come with an AC adapter so you'll need to buy one separately. You should find a link for a working adapter on the Amazon page.

  • You may be running into USB power management issues. Download Oculus Tray Tool and turn off the USB power management options. What may be happening is that the laptop is putting your USBs into low power mode to reduce heat, causing disconnects. Otherwise, perhaps you have a bad cable or headset? If it still happens, (a) check your BIOS/UEFI setup options to turn off any USB shutdown related settings, and (b) test your Rift on a friend's desktop system to see if it has the same problem.

  • I'm glad you're having fun! It's an amazing experience, and try to win over those skeptical friends of yours! Playing coop or even social experiences like watching a movie or talking in BigScreen are amazing.

  • A few games that seem great for people susceptible to motion sickness include:
SuperHot (you stand in one place)
Chronos (fixed camera position in a 3rd person adventure)
Eleven: Table Tennis (ping pong simulation, 1:1 physical movement only)
BigScreen (not a game, but lets you screen share with friends or join public rooms)
Pinball FX2 (if you like pinball this is a great sim)
I Expect You To Die (an "escape the room" game with great quality and humor)
Wilson's Heart (a stylized "film noir" story/puzzle/adventure game with fixed teleport positions)
The Unspoken (become a Dr. Strange-like mage in 1v1 or single player magic battles; I haven't played the single-player campaign but the PvP only uses teleport to fixed spots)
Star Trek Bridge Crew (you're seated on the bridge of the Enterprise)
Space Pirate Trainer (physical movement only; you're too busy dodging bullets to get sick)

That should give you a good start! Welcome to the future!

Edit: Some people swear by the VR Cover replacement facial interface, but I haven't used it. I've also heard great things about the WidmoVR cover - it covers the standard Rift facial interface with a replaceable soft cover that may make it more comfortable. You may want to check it out as a slightly cheaper alternative.

Locking straps like these.

I used the old Wii straps for my WMR and they are so much better than the ones that come with the controllers. Especially for Beat Saber!

I have an Odyssey+ and these are what I have been using for about 6 months and I have had no problems:
Vive Link
10ft HDMI
10ft USB 3.0
12ft Power Supply Adapter
Power Supply

u/k701 · 2 pointsr/oculus

It depends on where you have your computer. The rift cable is about 3 feet shorter than the Vive, which comes with this extension box to use extension cables. This box needs external power via a power plug, which means more cables, while the best buy solution is less messy.

u/slidedrum · 2 pointsr/ValveIndex

It is still available. https://www.amazon.com/HTC-Vive-USB-Extension-Cable-pc/dp/B01LZ23EDX just no longer included for some reason. Honestly in some regards I feel like this is more flexible than the frunk. Since you can easly mount your mod anywhere on the headset with this.

And now I’m contemplating a cable management system vs a foam floor (kids type with puzzle piece assembly). Gaffers tape around the foam floor. Then shoes off.

Lots of mixed reviews about cable management systems. I have essentially unlimited ceiling height, and am eying a swivel. I’m imaginging running a ratchet strap up across the play space (tight) and then attaching the swivel to the strap at midpoint and adding a block to the cable so it doesn’t slide through the swivel too far.

had a similar issue with my 1080ti and believe it or not the easiest fix was to buy a htc vive link box. i tried tons of repeaters and other adapters and nothing worked. got the link box and suddenly my oculus can easily run even the cable listed here:- https://www.bestbuy.com/site/insignia-9-vr-extension-cable-black/5706844.p?skuId=5706844 which is notorious for not working on most gpus. you can buy the link box on amazon here:- https://www.amazon.com/HTC-Vive-Link-Box-pc/dp/B01LXR6DKV but keep in mind that you will have to get the power adapter seperately. i'm using this one with no issues whatsoever:- https://www.amazon.com/12V1-5A-Supply-Adapter-Switching-Cameras/dp/B018JL0YIY/

Get a Vive Link box. Plug it into your graphics card and then you have a nice usb and HDMI extension and a box for it to pull out of if you tug on it. I have one mounted up by the ceiling and use it to plug my headsets in. Gives me 6 feet of extension and makes it easy to swap headsets without getting to the pc.

or if you have an RTX card with the usb c displaylink you can try the Accell Adapter. My Odyssey and O+ seem to like it. My original rift is not a fan of it which is funny as it says Oculus ready.

I don’t know about that far. Maybe with active, it’s like 2am for me so I’ll take a better look at your-setup tomorrow and see if I have any suggestions. One question, do you use the oculus built in mic and audio?

Edit: oh looks like you have hdmi boosted from your cable description so you prob don’t need the HDMI repeater.

u/gswart44 · 2 pointsr/Vive

ahhh...okay. Thanks for the explanation, as it was a little confusing from the description. I might try out the "wider" nose piece then, as I have a smaller nose. For me it would also be about feel, as well as the light distortion, as the stock nose piece doesn't seem to rest on my nose and help support the HMD very much at all. How would you say the comfort and support of the wider nose piece are? And thanks for your insights on this BTW!

u/forstuffetcetera · 2 pointsr/oculus

Using this calculator and selecting Ontario, Electronics, Battery, I got a grand total of 480.43 CAD. By no means cheap, but the duty is only $27.81. My understanding is that USPS doesn't incur the absurd brokerage fees that UPS does.

For comparison I just went to checkout on Amazon with the Vive's wireless adapter, which is also $299, and after $10.85 s/h, $40.20 import fees deposit (the max you pay for duty and tax, and if they overestimated it then you get a refund), and a random $3 discount it came to $348.03, which works out to ~$463 CAD, so $17 cheaper than the estimate for the TPCast.

Any time I've seen either of these products listed for sale in Canada they're like $499+ before tax and shipping.

Anyway, an expensive item either way, and you're right, it would be way better if Oculus would develop their own adapter instead of relying on third party market that has only one current option and one piece of vaporware (the Rivvr).

u/afd33 · 2 pointsr/iRacing

I use two sensors, and I kept bumping them when I had them on my desk.

I bought this and now they are hung behind and above my monitors working great.

u/Juntistik · 2 pointsr/oculus

Oh it's the Vive breakout box. I read somewhere you can use the rift on it too but I think it would be too expensive for what it's worth.

u/TheMoistHoagie · 2 pointsr/Vive

When is this planned to be released? This looks really good and may convince me to buy the Vive trackers finally. Also, are these the recommended straps for the Vive tracker? Doesn't look like they come with straps: https://www.amazon.com/TrackStrap-units-VIVE-Tracker-Precision/dp/B07114L4CH

u/bo3bber · 2 pointsr/oculus

No, it also has an DP input. See this pic: https://www.reddit.com/r/oculus/comments/4elfhk/powered_hdmi_and_usb_breakout_box_can_you_find/

It's #4 on that diagram. So that can be DP->DP (Vive box), then the output side of the Vive box is HDMI. I use this setup with my Rift because HDMI is a shitty connector and tends to break or bend pins. DP doesn't have that problem. The only reason they all use HDMI is for copy protection, it's an genuinely awful standard.

BTW: It's possible to buy these Vive breakout boxes standalone from Amazon, so it's an OK solution. I'm fairly sure at this point that the blackout problem is because Rift draws too much power, and is not a bandwidth problem.

I think there'll probably be purpose-built carrying cases for Quest once it comes out.

Quest is meant to be portable, so it wouldn't surprise me if we even see something from Oculus themselves, like they have for Go: https://www.amazon.com/Oculus-Carrying-Case-not-machine-specific/dp/B07JDPW5MN/

u/TonyDP2128 · 2 pointsr/OculusQuest

The reason I went with AMVR over VRCover was because I'd seen that the VR cover facial interface was pretty rigid whereas the AMVR one is more flexible. Still may try the VRCover one at some point but from what I've read the Quest product hasn't been as universally praised as their prior efforts.

I haven't really felt the need for controller straps yet. None of the games I've played have caused the controllers to fly out of my hands or make the battery covers come out. The wrist straps however do suck. There's a set for sale that is very similar to the ones on the PSVR Move controllers and those straps work great so I may give them a go at some point (DeadEye Wrist Straps).

Poor choice of words on my part. With my PC and Rift S my initial investment was all I needed for a satisfying and comfortable experience. I haven't had to do a single mod on my Rift S and it's worked great and felt great out of the box. I definitely paid more for my PC but as far as the headsets by themselves go the Rift S gave me almost everything I could have asked for right out of the box; coming from PSVR the halo design is so much more comfortable for me.

I was a day one adopter, and got this cheap case as it was one of the few available:

https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B01N6N3J8D

It's not bad, and is protective enough, but is just a quick adaptation of existing cases (not super customized in any way for the Go. Is relatively cheap as the glue holding the netting compartment has separated a little.

If I had to do it again, these both look like potentially interesting upgrades:

If you're really desperate... You could probably unscrew your front panel from your case so you can move it closer to the HDMI port. I would just get a little extension cable, or you could get an HTC Vive link box if you want to extend your play space and fix your problem at the same time.

u/Schneider21 · 2 pointsr/OculusQuest

Those better be some amazing freakin' ear buds for that much money...

The case looks similar to the official one for the Go... which I don't care for at all. I have two Go headsets for development at work, and my boss picked up the official case, while I ordered a Kootek case from Amazon. After clearing out the horrible chemical smell from the Kootek, it's a far superior case for a good bit less money.

Anyone looking to get a case for the Quest (and really, it should be everyone!), consider waiting a bit and seeing what third party options are available.

Honestly, those straps are up there with the new speakers in terms of shitty out-of-the-box build quality. If you have the cash I would strongly suggest these third-party cloth replacements as an alternative. I've got a Rift S and they're way better... they latch tighter and actually hold the grip, since they have a mechanism keeping them in place of a single piece of plastic or whatever governing it

Had an og vive, got a wireless adapter on amazon at release for 300. You can get them amazon warehouse, bought a used one there for my buddy thats been good as well.
https://www.amazon.com/gp/offer-listing/B07GKHNBCT/ref=mw_dp_olp?ie=UTF8&condition=all

Then I grabbed a vive pro complete set on amazon warehouse for 755 used. Some really light scratches in the outside plastic of the headband on the left side, so it was a really good deal. Right now it is higher, just depends on whats in stock.

Swapped the wireless over to that. It requires a free pci-express slot to run the wireless. Some people have said they need to swap their card down to slot 2 and put the wwireless in slot 1 but I havent experienced that on my older 5820k rig.

Ordered the index controllers through Steam store.

The battery is this one, which has a discount right now:

I was looking at a similar item earlier: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01N905VOY/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_ep_dp_gHj4AbXH481E2

I wonder if I'll have any issues threading that cable through the opening where the headstrap starts or if I'll need to fork up the extra $10 for the official Vive USB extension cable. https://www.amazon.com/HTC-Vive-USB-Extension-Cable-pc/dp/B01LZ23EDX

I'm running a similar setup to what you're looking at, just a bit shorter and less expensive. I couldn't see the need for the extra five feet.

Some zip ties, heat shrink and cable sleeving keeps it nice and tidy. I keep it clipped to the side of my desk with a binder clip to keep tension off the back of my computer. It also makes it nice and easy to disconnect when I'm not using it.

Other people have reported having good luck with the Vive box.

https://www.amazon.com/HTC-Vive-Link-Box-pc/dp/B01LXR6DKV/

If you go that route you'll also need to find a power supply and you still need to find cables.

I didn't have any luck with the Insignia cable from BestBuy. It's seems pretty hit or miss.

u/arnoldstrife · 1 pointr/Vive

I suggest replacing the bundle,

https://www.amazon.com/HTC-Vive-3-1-Cable-pc/dp/B01MQW49B3/

They have the actual OEM cable. Otherwise, it might be a tight fit to put in another cable. You'll need very thin connectors to fit in the slot on top of the headset.

https://www.monoprice.com/product?p_id=13590

Something like that would probably work, notice the very small head compared to the golden connector. But it becomes a durability issue. A general off the shelf cable isn't usually meant to be moved around and tug at all day.

u/hcatch · 1 pointr/OculusQuest

I got this one

Took a little while to receive, but I think I made a good choice. It’s not as small as the compact options out there, but it fits my frankenquest with all the extras perfectly, hard shell exterior, customizable compartments inside with Velcro walls. And it’s a cool looking self contained backpack, so it’s really easy to use for travel.

I honestly haven’t seen another case option posted that competes with this setup.

I'll just mention stuff I've tried myself.

If money is no object, multiple monitors or at least headless ghosts are ironically useful in virtual desktop applications like Bigscreen. I run 3x2560x1600 in one large screen. Bigscreen has an update coming for multiple monitors too. Big physical screens are nice for spectators/multiplayer.

Until the wireless adapter comes out, a decently long displayport cable and longer USB cable running to the link box to cover the large play area and if you have an original Vive, the new 3-in-1 cable with a sleeve.

I've been looking at [this overhead pulley thing](https://www.amazon.com/MDW-Retractable-Management-Headset-Adhesive/dp/B01M6EB8DM/
) but I haven't actually tried it yet.

Two Vives would be good, you can run them off the same 2 base stations and partition the space with chaperone. I run a Rift and a Vive in the same room.

Get an assistant/intern/wife/child to help you set up/put things away, maintain everything, patch/update, find new content, etc...

First check your HDMI and/or Display Port goes through the dGPU... otherwise you're gunna be hella disappointed when Rift won't work at all.

(on a laptop with nvidia, open nvidia settings, go to the PhysX section, and you will see a box with '<name of dGPU>' and '<name of iGPU>' and there will be a line pointing to your ports. if the line from HDMI or DP goes to the dGPU you're good, though you will need an adapter if through DP, obviously)

On my laptop (which the HDMI goes through the 1060), this is the only way it worked:

Vive Link box on one USB 3.0, which the HMD HDMI and USB plugs into

Powered USB hub plugged into the TB3 (USB C) port

One sensor and all peripherals plugged into the powered hub

One sensor plugged into the other USB 3.0 port

Third sensor plugged into USB 2.0 port

Any other setup and I just ran into all kinds of issues (seeming related to power) and couldn't even have two sensors. Now and then there were still hiccups, but it worked 90% of the time.

(moved Rift setup to a PC and only use WMR on the laptop now which works way better)

u/DJ_clem · 1 pointr/VAMscenes

The actual units are the same.

The difference is that the VR version comes with a mount to attach the thing to your headset and a 15' usb cable. Some people seem to do all right rigging their own mounts with double sided tape or velcro. And maybe you already have a cable long enough to go from your headset to the computer.

So if money's tight you could skip the VR version. I got it for convenience sake.

I also got one of these so i can plug the thing right into the USB port on the Vive headset, rather than running another cable back to the computer. Without the 90 degree usb plug adapter, the Vive cover wont fit on when something is plugged into it.

I haven't put any of this to the test yet.

Also, I highly recommend getting Wii Remote style straps for your touch controllers off Amazon, and also buying small springs from Ace Hardware and putting them in the negative side of your controllers. It will increase your tracking consistency tremendously.

I had issues with certain ports, then I tried a Vive Link Box, but instead of using a 12v 1.5a dc adapter it requires, I DIY'd a SATA power extension cable to use the 12v line, wired to a 2.5mm dc power jack mounted to a pci slot backplate, then DIY'd a power cable to plug into both the Link Box and the 2.5mm dc power jack. The SATA cable apparently gets 4.5a, but I'm not sure how much of that is actually feeding the USB port. I just know it doesn't work without the power feed, and it works on ports that gave issues without it. For the few ports that did work without it, it drained the internal battery 25% in an hour...so ~4hrs worth of gaming, but with the Link Box, it drained 5% in 30 minutes...so ~10hrs worth of gaming.

The design of this and this seem like a good idea to keep costs down and everything consistent between players that have one and ones that don't. But I guess that's not going to be the case when more SteamVR controllers get out there.

What would be great is if you allowed Xbox/PC/PS/Wii input to allow people to attach a controller or vive traker on any of the existing, reasonably priced, gun/rifle controllers out there.

u/Master_Frag · 1 pointr/SteamVR

Open SteamVR, then open the SteamVR settings here.

Go to the Developer tab, scroll down to near the bottom, and press "Remove All SteamVR USB devices".

Reboot.

If it does not work after that, open the headset mirror (look to the image, click Display VR View instead)

Check the mirror, if it's displaying a tracked image (pick up and move the headset and check for movement on the mirror).

If it does, and the Vive display is black, disconnect the HDMI cable from the headset (far left cable in this set of instructions)

And then unplug the HDMI cable from the link box, keep all over cables plugged into the link box, and plug the HDMI cable that goes into the link box, into the headset.

If you get an image from this, you have a bad 3-in-1 cable, or at least the HDMI portion, which is quite prone to failure, and I'm actually dealing with one currently as well.

You can then either buy a new 3-in-1, or buy an HDMI cable of a similar length (this one is known to work) and zip tie it to your current cable.

Maybe it wasn't built to be transported around, but I know for a fact (just in this thread alone) that quite a few people take their VR setups to conventions, friends places, warehouses, etc. So it's maybe not as uncommon as you think.

I read about 2 dozen posts around the internet covering the topic of using the wireless adapter with external configurations for laptops. Many people had mixed results and I was hesitant to try it myself but I needed to figure out if it was possible regardless since there wasn't any clear answers.

I ordered the items that made the most sense to me in terms of price and quality. The eGPU enclosure I got was the most attractive and had a carry handle which I liked considering my intended use for this setup was going to be mobile. I went with an active Thunderbolt 3 cable due to the fact that it "should" in theory provide a better signal from the eGPU to the laptop. Finally, I got a spare battery based on the reviews that said the included HTC battery didn't last long and took forever to recharge. The battery I got was recommended by others in the reviews who said they had a Vive Wireless kit.

Once I got all the items I did the setup and fired up the Vive. Right off the bat it worked perfectly. With that said, some of the mixed reviews I was seeing from others trying the eGPU setup had commented on FPS stuttering/lag when moving your head and I did experience this slightly although it was intermittent at times. I also had a brief random moment where everything pixelated pretty bad as if the graphics suddenly got toggled to 1990 Nintendo mode.

In the end I was able to determine the following,

  1. It is possible to run the Vive Wireless Adapter on a laptop.

  2. The hardware of the laptop is an important factor in having a smooth experience with this setup.

  3. Some tweaking and configuration work will need to be done to get a smooth FPS. Still a WIP for me to get the level I'm happy with.

  4. Some games may not be optimized enough to offer crisp visuals.

My testing of this setup was with an Alienware M15 and M17 both with i9 CPU, 2080 RTX, 32GB RAM, and x2 NVME M.2 SSD. I have an older Alienware 17 R5 I plan to test with soon to compare results.

Most importantly, what I noticed in my testing was that there's some graphical loads that will bog down the FPS and cause slight stuttering and it's not yet fully clear why. For example, while in SteamVR home room area there was a few key spots that when I looked directly at them it would cause stutter if I moved my head left and right slowly but if I opened the Steam menu which added a transparent overlay on top of what I was looking at the stutter would go away completely even though I could still see the same thing behind the overlay. I read a lot of people tweaking SteamVR settings to smooth out the FPS and I have yet to get the time to fully dive into that part but I suspect it will likely work out to resolve the issue.

The alternative setup I was wanting to test was getting the Alienware AGA enclosure and testing to see if that provided a better out of the box solution without tweaking settings. I found some people saying it didn't work at all and others saying it did. Considering the cable connection is different it still has me curious, as I believe the cable connection over the AGA is using an identical pipeline/bandwidth as Dell docking stations.

so that the extensions were powered. Samsung does spec HDMI 2.0 on their website:

https://www.samsung.com/us/support/troubleshooting/TSG01111314/

90Hz requirement: HDMI version 2.0, USB 3.0 HDCP 2.2 compliant

But it seems the HDMI 1.4 cables as long as they are short OR powered with the Valve Link box work well. I assume that the HDMI 1.4 with 10.2gbs is marginal.
