I love sandalwood. My lady loves sandalwood on me. Here are a few of my opinions on sandalwood and sandalwood-inspired scents.

St. Charles Shave Santalum Album Extract: (EdT) This is a one-note sandalwood. Quite sweet and creamy, and almost gourmand in character. US$18 for 2 oz.

St. Charles Shave Limited Edition Sandalwood from Wood: (EdT) still a one-note sandalwood, but deeper and richer. Less sweet, a bit more woody. A friend of mine pronounced that it has "more gravitas."

Herve Leger Homme: (EdT) This is artificial sandalwood (ebonal, and maybe okumal) but smells quite nice. Brightened up with ginger and yuzu (a hint of fruity acidity compared to a creamy sandalwood) and lasts a long, long time. Unfortunately, this has been discontinued. Dangit!

Taylor of Old Bond Street Sandalwood Cologne: This is a sophisticated scent, with some lavender, floral notes, and patchouli, with plenty of powderiness (to my nose.) The sandalwood isn't very present at all, though it's a nice scent. Garnered compliments from my lady despite its sweetness and floral notes. Not very long-lasting, and wants a separate atomizer. (Used as a splash, it's too powerful, and cloying!)

MPeG Santal Noble: Edt - A favorite of mine. Not super sandalwoody, but very woody. Smells like freshly-sawn cedar planks, along with amber, coffee, and spices. A superb scent, though not sandalwood-forward.

Karnataka Mysore Sandalwood Soap: This is a soap with actual Santalum Album oil (this is the "true" sandalwood, as opposed to the less complex "Australian sandalwood" and "Hawaiian sandalwood" oils.) Very little sweetness. The "soap" scent comes through clearly, but smells natural, as opposed to artificial. Over time, the sandalwood scent diminishes, but doesn't smell less "real," only less strong.

Every Man Jack Sandalwood Bodywash: This is a gel, in a plastic showergel bottle. It's not real sandalwood, but is pleasant enough. The scent doesn't last beyond the shower, but my lady likes how it smells as I use it. Sweeter than Karnataka, and more artificial, but not bad for everyday shower duty.

Caress Endless Kiss Sandalwood Vanilla body wash: No. Just no. Got it home and was uninspired. I added actual sandalwood oil and actual vanilla extract in an attempt to salvage this, but it could not be done. You'd have better luck adding fragrance oils to an unscented body wash, in my opinion.

Proraso Red (sandalwood) shaving cream: This is a great shaving cream, expecially for the price. The sandalwood is very earthy, and not very sweet to my nose. Lathering is excellent, lubrication is great. The scent doesn't last after the shave, but it's great while it does. I carry a tube in my gym bag, and also use the stuff at home. Very nice earthy sandalwood scent.

Nature de France Sandalwood Deodorant: This is an earthy sandalwood, quite similar to the Proraso cream. Not sweet, not overly creamy or woody. No aluminum, so it's not an antiperspirant, just a deodorant. Still, I love the smell.

Ogallala Bay Rum with Sandalwood aftershave: This is an aftershave, based on Ogallala's spice-heavy Bay Rum scents (cowboy-style, as opposed to pirate-style "pure" bay rum scents.) The sandalwood isn't particularly realistic, but it is pleasant, and has gotten me more than a few compliments. It's a very sweet sandalwood, to the point where I sometimes find it a bit cloying. My lady never fails to compliment me, though, if I've used it, regardless of whether I tell her that I have. Needs to be shaken and -for best result- applied once your face is dry. Good skin conditioning.

To be fair - most of the reviews are more about her character than they are about the actual perfume. For those who are curious.

u/DodIsHe · 8 pointsr/onebag

Q-tips, lip balm, deodorant, cologne (I like solid). Arguably not all of these are needs.

I also keep in my toiletry bag: meds (ibuprofen, benadryl, antacid), hand sanitizer, a camping spork, a hotel-giveaway sewing kit, a couple of bandaids, and a tiny tube of superglue.

As you have a taste for the classics, here are four fragrances that you'll at least find interesting, even if they don't necessarily appeal to you personally.

  1. Geoffrey Beene Grey Flannel is a rather unusual, HUGELY influential fougère released in 1975. Its top notes are chiefly comprised of violet, petitgrain, and iris, which give it an odd, slightly bitter floral top that at times may seem almost eerie. I once heard it referred to as "the Dark Heart of the Wood in a bottle," which is about the most accurate characterization I can think of. It's rich, mossy, and VERY smooth, but definitely not for everyone. It's also incredibly cheap these days and I picked up my first bottle at a local CVS, so it might be worth the $16 blind buy for an ounce. It has incredible longevity and is intensely powerful, so I wouldn't use more than one or two sprays at most.

  2. Halston Z-14 is a soapy, strikingly green leather chypre dating from 1974. Largely forgotten, it was also enormously influential, and you can find it in little hole-in-the-wall fragrance shops at highway factory outlet malls. It runs about $18 per bottle and is characterized by its skillfully blended, scintillating lemon top notes layered over a soapy green chypre base interspersed with the leatheriness of isobutyl quinoline. It's another tremendous powerhouse and I can get about 8 hours of wear from two sprays. It was released in conjunction with Halston 1-12 and legend has it that Roy Halston Frowick (aka "Halston") couldn't decide between the two perfumes, so he decided to simply release both instead. The names are rumored to come from the perfumers' designations when working on the scents.

  3. Antonio Puig Agua Lavanda (sometimes just called "Agua Lavanda Puig") is a remarkable lavender fragrance from Spain. Though officially characterized as an aromatic fougère, it's really more of a lavender soliflore and is one of the cleanest, most skillfully blended fragrances I have ever encountered. Importing the beautiful green glass bottles from Spain costs a fortune (and Puig sadly does not export them to the States anymore), but you can buy a huge bottle of body splash from Amazon.com. Don't be fooled by the name, the price, or the fact that it says "for women;" it's the same stuff and gloriously beautiful. Unfortunately, as an Eau de Cologne (no matter what bottle it comes in), it doesn't have tremendous longevity, but it serves as a wonderful layering base for my next recommendation, and I often wear them together.

  4. Still one of the greatest lavender perfumes on Earth, Pour un Homme de Caron was created by Ernest Daltroff and released by the House of Caron in 1934. It's a very simple combination of lavender, cedar, vanilla, and musk (the cedar is there to bring out the woody facets of the lavender) and used to contain a perfume base made by the House of DeLaire called "Mousse de Saxe." Sadly, the formula for MdS is long gone, as is everyone who ever knew it, so PuHdC has seen a couple reformulations, but it's still spectacularly good. You can find it on Amazon for ~$30 a bottle. There's a certain trick to wearing it, though: a single spray or two will develop a "doughy" quality due to the vanillin content, so the best way to wear the stuff is to layer it on top of itself: spray it five or six times in the same place on your wrist, then five or six times in the same place on your throat. The layering will bring out the lavender and musk more and keep it from smelling too sweet. It will also increase the longevity, which goes up to around six hours or so.

    Hope that helps a bit.

Guy chiming in with very decent feed back from chicks: Armani Black Code

I'm actually sensitive to scents and this cologne doesn't give me headaches. Bonus of this cologne; chicks dig it.

Here you go, on Amazon for $13. (Ignore the "for women," it's the same stuff, just a quirk of the Amazon listing.)

This is my ultimate favorite.

u/hermeslyre · 3 pointsr/fragrance

Cuba gold, royal, and prestige are the 3 most popular online. I don't have prestige.

I bought red and black too, but they aren't very good next to gold and royal. I have a 50ml of 1 million and royal smells very close to that.

They go on sale for about $5-8 online regulary. I picked all 4 of mine up for about $5 each. Amazon has that price on gold now, but it's and add-on item.

I'm a big fan of my Pinaud Clubman Musk, but as I'm at home for the winter, here I have Pi aftershave, which I may actually like more. I also doubt it was quite so expensive- I got it for Christmas a year or so ago, probably from an Ulta.

u/MostlyKelp · 2 pointsr/AskMen

It's an interesting cologne but I've received quite a few compliments on dates. It's def no a pheromone/woman magnet.

u/Frexys · 2 pointsr/malefashionadvice

I'll preface this by saying that your choice of fragrance is really something you don't want to get on the cheap (unless it started off expensive and went cheap in a sale or something to that effect).

That said, there are some good options for around that price range, albeit in smaller bottles. Armani Code is a nice "dressy" type of cologne. It's my personal go-to. There's also Ralph Lauren Polo Red which serves as more of a day to day fragrance.

Unfortunately I'm no expert on fragrances, and all I can really say is that I find them pleasant. If you want to find the right one, you can always go into a store and ask the people behind the counter to help you pick one out. They'll be more than willing to make recommendations based on your preferences. Also, /r/fragrance will help (I'm sure).

In fragrance there are very select products that Amazon uses FBA self-fulfillment for in Canada. If you check a majority of listings on Amazon.ca they are not FBA but 3rd party vendor fulfilled, which means they are shipped from third parties who pay Amazon a 15% listing commission. We've sold on Amazon prior and were also offered FBA opportunities which we declined.

On a side note, when an item gets popular, Amazon usually likes to take your supplier invoices and go direct and fulfill FBA. You will find they did this with Juicy Couture for example and now Juicy Couture being sold by FBA direct is close to full retail price ( https://www.amazon.ca/Juicy-Couture-Viva-Parfum-Spray/dp/B002XQ1YTK/ref=sr_1_1?s=luxury-beauty&ie=UTF8&qid=1525727159&sr=1-1&keywords=viva+la+juicy)

Taylor of old Bond Street Sandalwood Cologne. Smells good, the ladies love it.

>A classic fougere fragrance with top notes of geranium, lavender, rosemary and liquid amber supported by a heart of carnation, fern and orange blossom resting on a sumptuous base of patchouli, sandalwood, vetivert, powdery musk and rock rose. Contains Cedarwood oil, Geranium oil, Guaicwood oil, Lavandin Grosso, Patchouli oil, Rosemary oil and Vetiver oil.

My girlfriend uses Daisy By Marc Jacobs and I love the smell.

Well, you've sold me on Teakwood cologne. Not expensive, too. Added to Amazon wishlist.

Although I wish there were customer reviews and it was shipped and sold by Amazon, not a third-party merchant.

You should be a copywriter, lol.

Reminds me of the advertising executives in this movie:

Crazy People - Truth In Advertising

Their boss was less than impressed:

A Scene from the movie Crazy People

Quote:

> Teakwood from Bath & Body Works makes me want to fuck myself.

>Get the lotion too. I have the Teakwood body wash and Bourbon lotion and holy shit, I can't stop smelling myself.

>That's the one. The Bourbon is quite good too. They smell like sex. Not actual sex, but what sex should smell like.

>I think they're about $40 CAD in store. They also have body washes, body sprays, and really good lotions in those varieties.

Personally I like Pi by Givenchy. It has more of a subtle, earthy, sweet smell. I'm not a fan of real strong scents so it works well for me. As far as women are concerned, my wife likes it so that's really all the female approval I need.

I got my Mom CK One. My wife's response was "Thats it?" So now of course I am questioning myself. I know she loves that perfume and she was running out. I am not a flowers, chocolate or "normal" gift kind of guy. Should I get her something else? Any ideas?

u/brobits · 1 pointr/malefashionadvice

I recommend lacoste essential, 1 spray from a ~1.5' distance on the chest below the neck before you put on your shirt

u/CommanderCuddles · 1 pointr/malefashionadvice

Does anyone have experience with solid cologne? I have never really had a dedicated cologne before and was thinking of starting with this.

u/-wethegreenpeople- · 1 pointr/bestof

I went to look up the price for lactose essential on Amazon and this: http://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B000GI0S62/ref=mp_s_a_1_1?qid=1412719429&sr=8-1&pi=SL75 was the first result.

Not sure I want to buy something that has "toilet water" in the title.

u/HurkyJerkyDancer · 1 pointr/malefashionadvice

You piqued my interest. How long does this stuff last compared to conventional, liquid colognes? At $22.00, I'll just order it blind.

OP, if you're a cheap ass like myself, drugstore aftershaves are great for day-to-day scents, imo. I usually wear Pinaud-Clubman. Some say it's "old man smell" but I think it's classic. I also like Taylor of Old Bond Street Sandalwood as a cheaper option.

u/feralanima · 1 pointr/fragsplits

Bwahaha "paperwork"! Isn't that always the excuse! Well, depending on how you look at it you lucked out! Mechs and framers got the worst workload, something I was unaware of when I picked AM.

I bought a flight of Jo samples from Amazon. I think there were 10 samples at 1.5ml each. Nice to just try them out. They're the basic scents, no fancy lines. I enjoyed most of them.

u/bookishboy · 1 pointr/fragrance

I've seen this as cheap as $6 on Amazon:

The packaging is cheap as hell, and it doesn't last super long, but it's a nice fresh clean lavender scent. Rumored to be the go-to aftershave of Frank Sinatra. It has a shower gel flanker that's also nice.

u/lil_nicker · 1 pointr/malelifestyle

I wear Joop, and always seem to get compliments on it. Also it is a pretty good price.
