I’ve been using this one. I use it in my bedroom so the main selling point for me was that it was a nice white light instead of those purples and pinks.

u/misterweasley · 15 pointsr/IndoorGarden

Yeah its working, the leaves on the jade and other succulents were getting smaller and falling because the sun isnt hitting my window anymore as it used to, probably have to wait til August, Im not sure? But now that I have it there, I noticed lots of new growth! Here it the link

TL;DR: see links below.

Beyond the actual science of which light is best, it really depends for many casual plant owners whether they want the light to look "decor friendly" or they want it to do a bang-up job of growing their plants. Honestly, there aren't many effective lights that look like they belong in a residence. No matter what anyone says, when it comes to grow lights, you do get what you pay for.

Below are 5 well-recommended options. I own all these (and others), having tried many entry-level grow lights. They're ordered by price, low to high, from $15 bulbs that go in ordinary lamps to an excellent entry-level grow light for about $175. The lower end work best as a supplement for natural light. The higher end will let you grow almost anything, even without a window.

Hope this helps you. Any questions, just ask. And yes, there are detailed, technical, scientific explanations for why these are better options than others; you can dive in there if you choose. Let's get to those 5 lights:

Congrats on finding the seeds and getting this far. If you are a first time grower, then I would highly recommend a controlled environment starting with a tent. I have done it both ways, and outdoor seasonally, and you will benefit a lot from having a confined space you can control as you learn. Contrary to popular belief, it isnt "just a weed that grows". To have a quality finished product you need a good amount of time and energy spent on the plants. However, because the growth takes time, as a first time grower, you can purchase the items you need as you need them to build out your grow. I have purchased a lot of my items on amazon, so I will provide some links to items I vouch for personally.

I would start with a light and good soil. This is one of the most important items by far. For indoor, use LED, or a combo of T5 for veg and then LED for flower.t5: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B01M624OCR/ref=crt_ewc_title_oth_1?ie=UTF8&psc=1&smid=A1KBVFFLR1WEMK

LED: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0185OLBPK/ref=sspa_dk_detail_10?psc=1&pd_rd_i=B0185OLBPK

I have both of these products and can finish 4 plants in a tent nicely in about 100 days. I know people have feelings about using off brand lights but I have had zero issues, ever. On thing to do though is to not let the plants grow too tall. Rather train them to grow like bushes by topping them early and continuing to top the new nodes at a reasonable height, Id suggest 30 inches max (from top of the pot).

Also buy this : https://www.amazon.com/General-Hydroponics-pH-Control-Kit/dp/B000BNKWZY/ref=pd_sim_86_7?_encoding=UTF8&pd_rd_i=B000BNKWZY&pd_rd_r=5185d750-c735-11e8-83ba-35492fd40af5&pd_rd_w=FfWzV&pd_rd_wg=5opTv&pf_rd_i=desktop-dp-sims&pf_rd_m=ATVPDKIKX0DER&pf_rd_p=18bb0b78-4200-49b9-ac91-f141d61a1780&pf_rd_r=5TDAFKEPVRHZC2TKYA3F&pf_rd_s=desktop-dp-sims&pf_rd_t=40701&psc=1&refRID=5TDAFKEPVRHZC2TKYA3F

AND LEARN ABOUT pH!!!! Many young growers don't do this and it makes a HUGE difference.

For veg, you will be able to get by a few weeks or maybe a month without a tent, but the light will become annoying.

For soil. I highly recommend mixing fox farms happy frog and ocean forest. This will prevent you needing to use fertilizers really at all until flower time. Yes it is kind of expensive, but it is worth it. I have tried the experiment of making soil myself... it becomes outrageously priced so fast and unless you are really good at chemistry/botany you can totally fuck some shit up. Trust the fox farms soil. It is the best IMO. Also, I am a huge fan of cloth bags. I suggest these:

https://www.amazon.com/VIVOSUN-5-Pack-Thickened-Nonwoven-Handles/dp/B00TF9E6XE/ref=pd_sim_60_7?_encoding=UTF8&pd_rd_i=B00TF9E6XE&pd_rd_r=fb2641f0-c736-11e8-8198-7d964bea5356&pd_rd_w=GtDju&pd_rd_wg=aCJer&pf_rd_i=desktop-dp-sims&pf_rd_m=ATVPDKIKX0DER&pf_rd_p=18bb0b78-4200-49b9-ac91-f141d61a1780&pf_rd_r=H05JF866M3Z3Y0MEV2JX&pf_rd_s=desktop-dp-sims&pf_rd_t=40701&psc=1&refRID=H05JF866M3Z3Y0MEV2JX

So a tent should be your next purchase.

I have two of these and they do a great job.Tent: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B06XJQ8LPY/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o05_s01?ie=UTF8&psc=1

Shortly after getting the tent set up you need to get an oscillating fan and some regulators to tell you temp, humidity, etc.

regulator: https://www.amazon.com/AcuRite-Humidity-Thermometer-Hygrometer-Indicator/dp/B0013BKDO8/ref=pd_sim_86_6?_encoding=UTF8&pd_rd_i=B0013BKDO8&pd_rd_r=5185d750-c735-11e8-83ba-35492fd40af5&pd_rd_w=FfWzV&pd_rd_wg=5opTv&pf_rd_i=desktop-dp-sims&pf_rd_m=ATVPDKIKX0DER&pf_rd_p=18bb0b78-4200-49b9-ac91-f141d61a1780&pf_rd_r=5TDAFKEPVRHZC2TKYA3F&pf_rd_s=desktop-dp-sims&pf_rd_t=40701&psc=1&refRID=5TDAFKEPVRHZC2TKYA3F

Now even in veg, your plants are going to begin to smell. But by flower time you will have a real problem on your hands, even with a tent. So next you will need a carbon scrubber. I use this one off amazon for a tent and have zero complaints while the tent is closed. I also have the filter hanging in the tent and venting out the side into the attic of my rental. Zero smell, unless the tent is open (which you will want to do in the beginning, but over time you will learn to not go in everyday unless you need to). With this item, every other grow you need to replace just the carbon canister part of it. It is easy to do and worth every penny.

Carbon scrubber:

https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B06XFRNPR8/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o03_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

Buying all this over time is pretty easy, even on a conservative budget.

Hope this helps!

Got this one on Amazon but you can get different sizes for different containers depending on how many sneakers you want to do at a time. https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01M084LIE/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_i_PT3OCb8MSW817

Here's what I posted previously, hopefully this helps! Once I situated them, I've pretty much ignored them except for watering.

I'm using Hoffman Horticultural Perlite, without the miracle grow: found here and Better-Gro Premium Grade Orchid Moss: found here for my mixture. I got them local, but found the links to the specific items on Amazon. Neither has any plant food additives and are nutrientless for the VFT. This is my second time having some. I let the moss soak in distilled water before I mixed portions in a bowl until I felt there was enough perlite in it. They sit in a decorative glass jar inside a medium size open top terrarium next to a window. However, because my other plants weren't doing well at the window, I bought and installed this LED Plant Grow Light for Hydroponic Gardening: found here, but from what I understand I could also use my flex strip LED lights on blue and violet to give my VFT the right amount of light.

I have the light scheduled to turn on at 8 am, shut off at 6 pm through my Alexa devices.

Tips: I've found they grow better in a container that is deeper than it wide. Mine are watered gently from the top along the edges with distilled water, just enough to keep the moss wet. Since May the dead moss apparently has new growth from seeds or whatnot in the mix, so those are growing in there with the VFT too. :)

I just set up my overwintering corner in my kitchen under some cabinets. I got the LED light panel off of Amazon and used hooks to put them under the cabinet. I have a curtain I can put around the whole thing so the light isn’t so obtrusive. I have another set of lights in a window set to a timer for when the sun shines and they can shut off. I just set up the kitchen corner one two days ago so you’ll see that some plants were starting to stretch.

The one I got was pretty cheap but works suprisingly well, I'd definitely recommend it! It's this one, it's nice to be able to clamp it to a desk or windowsill so you don't have to deal with hanging anything.

u/burtnayd · 4 pointsr/AskWomen

here’s the fanny pack! I’ll also add that pretty much everything I own is chartreuse. It’s my jam.

And yes! I have two types of grow lights for my plants.

This onemy plants seem to really love just for the coverage it allows.

And I have two of these on another cabinet that do all right but aren’t as powerful. I like them because they have clips and are usb powered so I can save space on plugs with a dual port brick.

u/swstokes · 4 pointsr/microgrowery

For that price on amazon I’ve been looking at Spider Farmer SF 1000 LED Grow Light with Samsung Chips LM301B & Dimmable Mean Well Driver, Sunlike Full Spectrum 3000K 5000K 660nm 760nm IR for Indoor Plants Veg Flower https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07TS82HWB/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_i_F82WDb5GERB2X

But I’ve just started looking in aliexpress/alibaba and you can get one with 2 panels for the same price as the single panel on amazon

u/Gingevere · 3 pointsr/succulents

I have this light in a cheap lamp pointing downward over a 3'x3' card table full of plants

u/AaronDSeal · 3 pointsr/houseplants

It depends on how many plants you have. I️ have roughly ten small houseplants clustered in a 4X4 foot area and use these lights and as a broke biochemistry student who studies plants. I know that plants actually use a very limited spectrum (that these lights supply) i have more growth from two of these lights than i had in my actual window sill. I️ bought mine for $8 a piece, and I’m not sure why they’ve had such a huge price jump. Mount them up high, as they emit more of a beam than a dispersed light.

They are made in the same factory as the “Taotronics 12W LED grow light” (look it up on amazon too) and that produce has over 1000 reviews and 5 stars. I’ve used them for about a month now and i am truly blown away by how much my plants are GROWING and not just staying alive.

I have three prayer plants, a rattlesnake calathea, a jade plant, an alocasia elephant ear, and others under this light and I’m growing new leaves literally once every few days. I just wanted to keep them alive, and i got something better.

u/teemie · 3 pointsr/succulents

They both sit on the same windowsill, except the one on the left also gets about 10 hours of supplemental lighting during the day under this grow light. hope that helps!

Thanks! I’m using a Bestva 2000 watt LED and General Hydroponics Flora series nutrients, and aerating each bucket. I’ve kept the PH around 6.0, and ppm is currently around 1800 or so (this should probably be higher?). I’ve literally just been following the recommended feed schedule on the back of the bottles. Other than topping up as needed, I’ve only completely changed out the nutrient solution once, which was about one week ago - kind of careless according to recommendations, but I’ve run into no problems so far. This is my first go at hydroponics, so I’m just going with semi-educated guesses and learning as I go.

What are you doing for lighting? Using air stones?

u/ytrashpanda · 3 pointsr/microgrowery

Hi OP. My bro and I started off with one of these, and now have 3 of them and are suggesting our buddy get one for his first light.

edit: one more edit - if you have all the knowledge from your space bucket grow, and are handy with electronics then by all means go for the Alibaba QB, and report back for the rest of us newer growers on your experience! :)

https://www.amazon.ca/Spectrum-Reflector-Lights-Heatproof-YGROW/dp/B07JY9B43R/ref=sr_1_1?keywords=ygrow&qid=1555690340&s=gateway&sr=8-1

edit with US link: https://www.amazon.com/YGROW-Spectrum-Reflector-Lights-Heatproof/dp/B078XHHVKZ/ref=sr_1_3?keywords=ygrow&qid=1555691656&s=gateway&sr=8-3

Probably also on the US site. They claim it has 600 w output. Here are my observations:

  • Draws 150 watts from the wall
  • Very bright, pretty good "dont look at it" vibe from the eyes, and it is close to natural sunlight in color
  • Burns seedlings if they are too close (within 30 cm or closer) so definitely powerful enough
  • Veg plants will "pray" which is a sign of light stress if they are too close, again within 30 cm or so
  • It is plug and play, has a small built in fan for cooling which runs very quietly
  • Have been flowering 3 plants under it for 5 weeks and they seem to be on track with other posts here in the same time frame. Will see about some pics tonight when the lights come on.

Overall I can recommend it as a new grower. I have two 2x4 tents that are 5 feet tall due to a low basement, and a separate veg area for a perpetual grow. If I had gone the Quantum Board route I would be in it for 3 Quantum boards to have the same setup which seems like a huge initial outlay for a new grower.

My thoughts on Quantum Boards from browsing this sub for 7 months pretty intently:

  • They definitely seem to be at the top in terms of output and potential adjust-ability what with the drivers and all that
  • Potential to build exactly what you need to top out at watts per square foot for your exact space
  • Plants grown under them, all else being equal, never look small for their age

A potential issue as a new grower specifically :

They have by far the most thought needed to be put in to get started, you will need to spend time reading about them to do it right. There are often posts here from people saying "I got my QBs now how do I put it together?" These growers surely get set up eventually and going, but as a new grower that is a lot of extra mental work at the outset.

Even just making sure you get the right products is a bit of a project. Keep in mind if you order from one of the Chinese sellers you are in for a little wait. HLG ships from the US I guess? But costs more.

Not to say "dont do QBs" but make sure you have the time to get the research right on the actual growing in addition to getting your lights correct. The amount of young sick plants posted that are dying under great QB lights because the grower doesnt know about aeration or even not to over water their plant.. or started nutes as soon as it popped out of the ground.

I know I will likely want to upgrade my lights eventually from these modular LED kits, but for now they are cheap and easy to get started with and my plants like them just fine.

Bonus, if I do want to go to a QB down the road, I can use my former flower LEDs in the veg area, so they continue to be worth the investment.

(edit to add US link and clean up formatting, happy growing)

Most of the info you'll find online for indoor grow bulbs will partain to pot (weed) growing. If it's legal where you are, I say go for it but ordering lights off of some sights can get you on a list of sorts that maybe you don't want to be on lol.

These are fairly cheap cfl's and I reccomend these types over the longer larger u shaped tube cfls. https://www.amazon.com/Hydroponic-Full-Spectrum-Light-5500K/dp/B005P29K1S

I say this because I've not had good luck or life span out of the others, but with smaller ones like these I've had great success.

But here's some L.E.D. types that you may be able to afford that last much longer

https://www.amazon.com/Lights-Spectrum-Indoor-Succulents-Seedling/dp/B07FKF6BT4

These links ought to get you started at looking at some options. Hell, I just was super shocked at how much the price tags have gone down in the last 3 years since I bought some for myself! Lol... Now I'm gonna have to do some reinvesting also!

u/wrosel · 3 pointsr/proplifting

this grow light from Amazon was going around r/houseplants for a minute. Of course I impulse bought it. I’ve never had one but I really like it because it’s flexible with a clamp. I do believe my plants are happier. My succulents were extremely etiolated before, but now they’re growing well!

Edit: I also love the timer function and have it on the 12 hour interval

u/breedabee · 3 pointsr/succulents

This is the one my mom uses, bendy but gets hot so make sure it's away from hazards!

This is the one I use! I have two currently.

It was suggested by a couple people from another thread I read on here. This is the link:
Grow Light, Ankace 60W Full Spectrum Grow Lamp, Dual Head Gooseneck Plant Lights for Indoor Plants with Replaceable Bulb, 3 Switch Modes https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07PFHMNC9/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_i_0XFWDbR8TCBH1

I can’t say much about it since this is my first week using it.

u/MrMarouka · 3 pointsr/succulents

Thanks for the suggestions!

I got two of these, and put them on both ends of the table, so every plant I have has access to light.

Just curious, would you say there's such thing as "too much" light when it comes to these things? My plants get a daily dose of about 5 to 6 hours of natural sunlight (though it has been dimming since Autumn began, and we've had quite a few cloudy days recently)... I usually turn the grow lights on right before going to sleep at night, and then turn them off before work in the morning, so they've been getting approximately 8 hours of artificial light per night.

I've been worried that either they're getting too much or too little. So far I have not seen any signs of deteriorating health, no withering or anything like that... but I've only had them for about a month. Not sure how long it takes for an unhealthy plant to begin showing symptoms..

u/Ron_Fuckin_Swanson · 3 pointsr/houseplants

The HLG 550 v2 is, but that seems to be the only one, and that's for a 4x4 - 5x5 tent. The Mean Well driver is for the rest, but not the main PCB.

The Spiderfarm SF lights seem very similar to the QBs (though I haven't used one), and appear to be UL / ETL certified.

I don't think any of the QB-style boards people order on alibaba are.

I'm a big fan of these Amazon COB's:

https://www.amazon.com/Lightimetunnel-Hydroponics-Spectrum-Reflector-Flowering/dp/B01AJPNDSG/

I think they are the same as the Roleadro, when i got mine they were 9 bucks cheaper, at $90. they pull about 186-190w from the wall. I have 2 of these and a Mars Hydro 600 in a 2.5' x 5' x 5' closet space. For the $, I think the 400w COB's are a much better buy. If you wanna add some colored light, get two of these spotlights and add them to the COB's - https://www.amazon.com/Apollo-Horticulture-Spectrum-Indoor-Growing/dp/B00PBCG8X0/

u/HerpWillDevour · 2 pointsr/gardening

A hardware store flourescent light fixture can usually be had for about $20 and that is the whole fixture ballast and all.

This one for example is the same price as just the bulb you linked to. You'd still need the tubes then but they are not very expensive. For just starting plants indoors you probably don't need expensive 'plant spectrum' tubes ordinary ones are pretty good for plants to begin with.

I'm personally very fond of these but they do run a few dollars more and the light color is amazing for plants but it'll make you feel like you're going blind after a few minutes unlike flourescents. That bulb does screw into a standard screw fixture. I like to use extension socket cord like these for them. Both of these options would be about twice the price of the bulb you're looking at in the end but that bulb you found won't work in a standard fixture anyway.

u/infincedes · 2 pointsr/ReefTank

Not that they dont work but those refugium lights are insanely priced. My $10 hydraponics LED grows chaeto so fast it'll block flow in the 20 gallon tank it's in if I dont clean it every week. I can fill 2x 10g buckets worth of it.

LEDs require a specific current, not a specific voltage. I know that sounds odd, but these COB LEDs will continue to consume current until they burn out, so they need a constant current driver in order to regulate the current that's delivered to them. The actual voltage that is delivered can vary, but it's typically somewhere between 12V and 48V.

I have the materials to build just such a setup, but I've read that the Cree COB LEDs I have don't put out a very good light spectrum for plants. I've got the goods, though, so we'll see how it works out.

While I'm talking about it, here are the light sources I have:

I suggest a grow light bulb in a cute lamp pointed at a few plants. That would make it feel way less sterile.

All the comments so far are good choices, but this shelf would look neater with some t5 fixtures mounted under the bottom each shelf. I haven't used any yet so I don't have a recommendation but I found this assortment for you to get an idea of what they are... https://growershouse.com/t5-fluorescent-grow-light-bulb-and-fixtures#!

Or try the flat panel type of led:

I'd use some spacers and mount them directly under each shelf, making sure it has a few inches of breathing room for heat dissipation.

my partner got me this light panel the other day. it's about 6 inches (give or take!) away from my plants. i've had it for about two days, so i can't give any feedback. but if someone more knowledgeable than me can give any advice i would love to hear it!

Check out this light. Only costs a little bit more and has more wattage. Definitely a good light but my only concern would be too strong of lighting for a relatively small space.

I'm a new grower and i have the "LED secret" set with a 48x32x60 tent and 3 lights, 2 LEDS that are 180watts and 75 watts respectively, and one 75watt halogen.

I'm worried that I'm not giving her enough light even though I only have one plant, so I'm considering upgrading. Should I buy a much bigger LED or a slightly larger LED?

This is just a trial run and i'm going to harvest in 2 weeks and replace this one plant with 6 auto flowering seedlings, would the larger lights be over kill for 6 plants or just for one? Should I consider upgrading to 1000 Watts?

u/Omnesquidem · 2 pointsr/microgrowery

It's a nice list but not exactly budget friendly. But you're right it's all good to buy and build up. My lights and soil are my issues for my next grow. I'm going with a pair of these https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01MT2SGER/?coliid=I8PSCT3OX15KK&colid=1UKQMBAQON5HA&psc=0&ref_=lv_ov_lig_dp_it because I've got two 24 X 48 X 60 tents I want to work in. Sure they won't give me the MONSTER harvest I want but they'll do the job until I can upgrade.

Since I make my own nutes I'm not too fussed about them and they seem to be doing the job adequately.

My big issue is I'd like to get a bag of AFFORDABLE soil that's pretty much all in one bag. That said my mom is a huge gardener and she's got TONS of composted soil I need to go check the PH on. Earthworms already built in LOL. Her tomatoes seem to love it so I may just grab a bag of it and mix with perlite and cocoa when I get through this bag of https://www.amazon.com/dp/B008JSMNGE/?coliid=IO001MIYEWW3U&colid=1UKQMBAQON5HA&psc=0&ref_=lv_ov_lig_dp_it

Actual is 390 watts if its this one.

Personally, I would't use that light to cover more than 6 square feet but you could get away with 8.

Read the beginners guide located on the sidebar. This is information that you should have known before purchasing a light.

Sure! It’s only $215. My buddy used it by itself in a 4x4 for his first grow ever and put out like ~14oz.

FYI Ive only ever used HPS/MH so this is my first use of LED (2nd with CMH). It’s been working great combined with the CMH so far and temps have been around 67-74 consistently.

I have this in two foot and 4 foot. Highly recommended. All my plants are nice and vibrant and not etiolated at all.

And I also have this for quarantine plants and at work for my desk plant. Works great and is dimmable, and each light can be turned on individually or together. Also has a few built in timers.

Also, as an aside, when you do get your cactus a light make sure you acclimate it. Just like us, cactuses sunburn.

u/stonedarcher · 2 pointsr/succulents

Maybe try something like this or this or this!! :)

u/flyingpinkdinosaurs · 2 pointsr/succulents

I’d say 2:1 perlite:miracle grow cactus mix for my Haworthias. I honestly just kinda winged(wung?) it and I think maybe I have too much perlite and that’s why roots are taking ages. But definitely heavier on perlite for them. here is the one I have and honestly the only reason I have it still is for rerooting, and I don’t even know if I’m imagining things or it actually be like that 😂

u/throawayformycatskye · 2 pointsr/succulents

It has a clamp. I got this. I think the ceiling ones are higher quality and longer lasting, but there’s nowhere for me to put one of those.

u/mithracula · 2 pointsr/succulents

Sorry, I don’t know much about the strips and shelves - though I do use some on my reef tank macroalgae reactor (clear tube with led strips wrapped around) seems to work well and puts up with occasional salt water with out electrocuting me or fish. I don’t know how to fix them onto shelves tho.

I use these one on my plant shelves and added one of these just so it wasn’t bright red. You can see my shelves in my last post. They’re super low profile. But my shelves are wire mesh which allowed me to easily tie them to the underside.

u/palepinkpith · 2 pointsr/hydro

Just get an outlet timer like this one

Unfortunately, LEDs with high enough lumen output are expensive.. It's just a fact of life. I would go with T5s to start. But, if you have a pretty small footprint, you could use this this LED light,. I've never used it, but I believe people are relatively happy with it.

u/zfriend · 2 pointsr/u_zfriend

im working with a real hodgepodge of stuff bought over the years, but i like these because they are easy to instal and configure, (and cheap!) but they need to be relatively close to the plants, i have them over my mini plants and they are at a hight of maybe 8-9". im also not wild about the color of light the put out and am looking to update to some white leds

u/SherrifOfNothingtown · 2 pointsr/Permaculture

I've found single bulbs to be less versatile than LED "tubes" or panels, though I mainly use them for seed starting. I got a bunch of lights like https://www.ebay.com/itm/2x-Plant-LED-Grow-Light-90cm-T8-Kit-Full-Spectrum-Indoor-Veg-Flower-Tubes-Lamp/264398968207, with tubes the length of the shelves that I start seeds on, and wired up a power supply to them. I also have one of https://smile.amazon.com/gp/product/B076B1W99T that's worked just fine for several years in a row now. A plain old mechanical timer like you'd use for any other lamp has worked fine for setting day lengths, except that during power outages mine doesn't keep counting time, so it can occasionally get skewed a bit if the power goes out for a couple hours then returns.

u/rokketcity48 · 2 pointsr/airplants

Don’t feel bad - I was entirely incapable of keeping them alive (cue the less-caring-than-a-desert jokes from my husband :P) during my first several attempts. Even tho I’m pretty decent with plants in general (I think lol), I’ve only recently been able to maintain heathy/happy/thriving air plants with any consistency. I’ve been proud of keeping them happy more regularly than ever before over this past specifically, but I’m no expert.

Idk if this is blasphemy in this sub or not, but I find most air plants to be fairly fickle little dudes that can get unhappy from barely noticeable things. I had one die because I think a barely perceptible draft was hitting it the wrong way. They die if you give them water, when they seem like they need it really bad, sometimes. I had one rot from what appeared to be overwatering... before I ever even had the chance to water it. I also still have one that, no matter what I do, it never dries after watering in a remotely reasonable amount of time- I literally blow dried it on cool for half an hour last week. Several died early on because it looked like they’d gotten too much direct sunshine- but they were inside a room with shades on the windows. I’ve kept them all outside before but they seemed to struggle and become frail out there. One was randomly blown off my patio by the wind and I never found it again. I mean it’s really been a journey for me, even before this little dude in the photo ever existed!

My biggest pain in the butt adversary seems to be the humidity here. I also like to keep my house kinda cooler, which they really respond to and seem to like at night, but god forbid I forget to turn the ac down before I leave for work during the day. So, my air plants all usually seem either really happy or really confused (kinda like ‘where the hell are we!?’) lol.

I think it’s a lot of trial and error, and finding what works with that specific little air plant in the environment you live in, so your mileage may vary.

BUT, for me, this is what seems to work:

1- Buy them from good places. Only the ones I’ve ordered from growers in CA who specialize in air plants seem to thrive imo- the ones I’ve bought locally from Home Depot or wherever all had a shelf life of a few weeks or so. (The one in the photo is from Amazon but I’ve got other healthy ones for a couple of bucks and free shipping on Etsy.)

2- I keep them in sunny windowsills. Even though the light bulb terrarium and air plant holders nowadays are SUPER cute, air plants (in my experience) only really ever seem to thrive with LOTS of [surprise surprise] unimpeded air access. I only really put them in their cute lil homes/holders when people visit or I’m cleaning up the house.

3- I regularly flip them over every day or so. This way they don’t get flat on one side.

4- I rarely water them and have no luck with misting (they seem to rot easier with misting for me, but, again, its very humid where I live).

5- I bathe them very rarely and very quickly (I don’t leave them fully submerged in water- they can’t breathe like that)- once a month, maybe. I also put them on wire cookie racks out on my patio in the heat to dry them completely afterwards. I think an important part of keeping them happy is drying them fully within a reasonable amount of time and drying them as well as you possibly can.

6- I do use a fertilizer spray derived from sea kelp and made specifically for air plants. But, some people say not to do this because it’s easy to overdo. Again, ymmv.

I only fertilize them in summer when it’s super sunny out. I always only do one spritz, if any, and monthly at the most, usually when I water them.

I will say that fertilizer seems to be the ONLY thing that encourages them to blush and bloom, at least where I live [not a desert or dry zone].

6- If an air plant does have a budding little blossom, I stop watering it entirely and let it do its thing unless it looks like it’s definitely dying. Buds usually die before blooming if I water or mist the plant while they’re developing. And, if it doesn’t kill the bloom, it seems to at least slow down the flower’s growth pretty significantly.

7- If they start looking unhappy, I put them under this inexpensive lamp. They fucking love that thing. And it has championed many a comeback. BUT, it does look kinda weird science-y hooked up in my kitchen with all the air plants sprawled out underneath it.

Other than the above, I’m still figuring it out and learning how to keep them happy too. They seem to need a decent bit of continual maintenance and a hell of a lot of attention to detail. Especially if you’re trying to correct (sometimes inexplicable) issues they’re struggling with! But, ironically, they can also struggle directly because of TOO much attention/water/sunlight/air, lol. So, it’s a weird balance.

But, I really respect a picky plant. And, air plants are super rewarding if only because they’re so weird. One really cool blossom is worth every second of the trial and error. You gotta stay stubborn and experiment a little, but the whole process is kinda cool once they start poppin off and living their best life!!!

Hope this helps a little bit and best of luck! I’m sending good vibes to your air plant babies 🌱💜

EDITED for grammar/clarity and to say: I’ve only ever had really small air plants so larger/more mature ones may be a different ballgame, idk.

So something like this light, that uses white LEDs would likely be better for my use case?

u/Thylakoid6 · 2 pointsr/succulents

It gets a lot of light- it's positioned almost directly under my powerful white LED light (this isn't the exact model of light I have, but it's pretty much the same)

When the E. raindrops is outside during the summer, it needs to be in full sunlight for most of the day, or the bumps will not form or get bigger. You can see in the picture that some of the leaves near the center don't have bumps or have very small bumps- this is because the plant has only just been exposed to the higher power LED light after a long period of having suboptimal lighting.

If you look on Amazon there are LOTS AND LOTS of grow lights. I have bought several. I have had good luck with the LED grow lights. They are more energy efficient and the plants seem to do well. If you get some just make sure they are FULL SPECTRUM.

You can also get flourescent T5 grow lights. They do fine but just use more energy. They also tend to run hotter so be aware of how close they are to your plants so they don't burn.

Health question time! Let me preface this one with two things: one, I'm a relative newcomer to this whole system, having only been keeping succulents for about 2-3 months at the suggestion of a friend, who recommended it as a sort of emotional relief hobby (at which it is excelling, mind); and two, this plant has seen terrible things and not all of them are my fault. This particular echeveria (?) was rescued from a beer bottle planter at a Trader Joe's in California, which it had shared with a Cotyledon tomentosa and what I *think* is a barely living Crassula capitella. Crappy soil and no drainage, of course. Then, it traveled across the country for two weeks under the care of someone whose entire knowledge of succulents consists of "they like sun, right?" so they sat in the brightest sun available, which very much fried them. This plant has been under my care for just over a month, nursed back to what I think is health.

Anyways, on to the bullet points!

  • Description: Aerial roots *and* a black stem near the top at the same time. Notable dry brown scar at base of stem, unknown origin--old rot, or rubbing against the edge of its former planter? Plant shows no other signs of rot and appears otherwise healthy, besides aforementioned pre-acquisition "care." Images: https://imgur.com/a/hr7Y8QU Edit: Note that water present in image 2 is from watering that occured roughly 30 minutes before image was captured. it was promptly gently blown off with an empty squeeze bottle.
  • Drainage: Plant is in a glazed terra cotta pot from Bonsai Jack. Large drainage hole. Water all but falls out.
  • Potting medium: Bonsai Jack Succulent and Cactus Soil, Gritty Mix #111, topped with Bonsai Jack Natural top dressing mix.
  • Water: Pot is saturated once weekly by plugging drainage hole with finger, filling with a gentle stream of water from a small cup until the water line is over the top, holding for approximately 10 seconds, and then allowed to drain. Pot is gently "bounced" up and down to reduce dripping, then set on dry towel for about 30 minutes until the pot is dry and water does not drip when handled. Local climate zone 6B, in relatively dry conditions, indoors. 9" desk fan roughly 10ft away.
  • Sunlight: Little natural sunlight; only available window is north facing. Artificial lighting used: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07PXP7DW5/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o00_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1 One strip directly over the plant, 100% power, 12 hours per day. Nearby echeverias of different varieties seem completely happy, showing no signs of etiolation or poor health.
  • History: Unfortunate life conditions detailed above. Plant received roughly end of July, with fried tips and very little new growth. Plant has been slowly dropping the most damaged of the lower leaves, drying them to a papery texture; these are gently removed with a pair of soft tweezers and very little force. Upon "healthy" new growth appearing, old "damaged" new growth was dropped. Making room for healthier leaves?
  • Rot concern: Yes, and yet... no? Brown patch detailed above is completely dry, with a woody texture. No mushy leaves found. Only visible sign of wrongness is mild panic about black stem near the top and the aerial roots.
  • Bonus round: Can anyone tell me what type of echeveria this is? If it survives, it's good to know, and if it doesn't, I might want one that wasn't pre-cooked.

I am concerned that it is not enough. All of my grow lights are 30W+ and they're relatively small. You also need photo cells specifically designed for growing plants (if you're using LED). Regular LED lighting is not sufficient for proper growth because it does not emit the correct light spectrum.

Considering purchasing a clip on 30W grow light from amazon. They're less than $30 and most of them work great. I prefer the natural colors >

Or

Also, light meters for artificial lighting will often read much lower than what is recommended for growth, despite the plant growing phenomenally. As an example, I have a dryadella aviceps sitting under light that only reads 110FC, yet it is blooming like a madman. It requires 500FC at least when grown under sun. This is because artificial lighting is constant, both in the amount of light and the duration. Sunlight is less in the morning and less at night, whereas 12 hours of LED lighting is consistent in brightness throughout the entire day. Light meters are only good after you have found the proper growing intensity for plants, so you can replicate it for like species.

u/leo-theleopard · 2 pointsr/cannabiscultivation

Your best bet would be to look at "quantum board" style lights. They are boards with many small LED diodes etched on. If you decide on options 2-5, Makes sure to get a 240w board or higher for your intended grow space.

Here are some options off of amazon (1-4):

  1. Mars Hydro ts-2000, 3.5x3.5 coverage
  2. Spider Farmer SF-2000
  3. If you're good at DIY. If you can wire stuff up yourself.
  4. If you're really on a budget, you could get 3 of these
  5. If you're familiar with Alibaba and fine with paying high shipping costs from China, this is your cheapest option out of all. Pre-assembled boards are more expensive, but if you order the non-assembled ones (DIY), it is much cheaper. Kingbrite is a trustworthy brand on Alibaba. Assembled or not, Alibaba will be the cheapest out of all of these.

Edit: sorry for all the formatting issues. That’s what I get for switching between mobile am desktop.

So I use this light in what was my closet beneath the stairs. I currently have 3 plants, the one pictured and 2 much smaller plants that only germinated 4 weeks ago. I put them in normal potting plants, with the trays to catch excess water and normal flower potting soil. I regret this decision now as I have had to add some CaMg supplement to the water. I keep the ph around 6.4 and the heat about 68-71 Fahrenheit. Also I think I need some boron supplement soon.

You really should run a tiny second setup at your place too. It opens up a world of possibilities and would instantly add months of extra flowering time each year. I use a small (~12" W by ~20" H) round plastic garbage can with a lid as quarantine when I bring new clones home. You'd use it in one of two ways, both of which are different than than what I'm doing with it. It'd totally be a game changer though. Cut a hole in the top of the garbage can lid and use a light along these lines https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00TT3EKD2/ref=sxbs_sxwds-stvp_2?pf_rd_m=ATVPDKIKX0DER&pf_rd_p=3171424582&pd_rd_wg=128g8&pf_rd_r=997NGACEFB6JT6KA6X48&pf_rd_s=desktop-sx-bottom-slot&pf_rd_t=301&pd_rd_i=B00TT3EKD2&pd_rd_w=QscmD&pf_rd_i=led+grow+e26+12&pd_rd_r=H8D1VFCVZGXG1K20XZ00&ie=UTF8&qid=1504341333&sr=2 . Cut a smallish hole a few inches above the base of the can so that cool fresh air will be pulled in while the warmer stale air rises away. You'd have to look around to pick out the best light for your container, but something on the smaller side is good. They put out less heat so you could possibly use it in closed closet depending on temps while it's on. Also, if plants get way too much light in veg they grow slowly and don't have enough internode spacing for training. You'll probably want to make sure that you have your cloning technique dialed in before trying this, as you only get one shot to keep things on schedule. At first you could use the bucket to determine the sex of your seedlings. Grow the seedlings up a little larger than you normally would before FIM'ing them. When you top the young plant take enough of the top to use for a clone. Attempt to root the clone under 12/12 right away in the bucket. it might root and show sex, it might show sex and die, or I've had them just die before showing sex. While you're waiting on the flowering clones to show sex start shaping your newly topped plants in veg. We're hoping for the vegging plant to be ready or nearly ready to flower when the clones show sex. If the clone doesn't pull through you're really only a few days behind if you hadn't tried to flower a clone and FIM'd the plant earlier.

This site is good and have some real great range of lights. Personally Im a fan of this type of design, version 1, more expensive and stronger light with 96W , version 2, slightly smaller size, price and light with 65W. Or you could go with the more traditional shop light style, 1 tube is 30W. If you want something cheaper then this one from amazon looks okay at 22W.

LED lights are more expensive to buy but much cheaper to run in the long run (electricity bill). Saw you asking about the energy bill, use this site or one of many similar to check out how much it would increase. Just put the watts in the Power Consumption (the numbers in bold above), many use grow lights for 16 hours each day so put 16 hours and then how much your electricity cost is.

Those bulbs aren't going to be enough and I'm not sure anything you put in the vanity is going to work as the bulbs are 3 feet away when they should only be a few inches away and they are pointing out horizontal, not down directly at the plants. As for hanging the lights either get a clip on work light socket or for the self contained ones, just put and eye hook in a ceiling stud and hang it from wire or chain. I'm not sure you're really grasping how much light these need. Both Vandas and Den phals can take as much as full outdoor sun and need quite bright light to perform well. They aren't low light plants like phals. I posted some other options below that would be white light. For the second light, you'd want the 45 watt version , not the 14 watt. https://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B015YX8ZF4/ref=mp_s_a_1_3?ie=UTF8&qid=1491063709&sr=8-3&pi=AC_SX236_SY340_QL65&keywords=grow+light+white&dpPl=1&dpID=514VugAmA5L&ref=plSrch

Sun: Nepenthes generally like bright light without much direct sun. About 50% sun or dappled shade is good. Plant lights often work well if they are broad spectrum and are kept just far enough away to prevent overheating or scorching. Thin, spindly plants or poor coloration are a sign of too weak a light.

Light is a key factor in growing healthy orchids. Direct sunlight may cause plants to burn, and too little light will prevent plants from flowering. An ideal location is behind curtains or window blinds. If you receive your plant by mail, expose it to light gradually in stages over a period of several weeks.

You will want purple grow lights (blue + red spectrum), higher wattage for the nepenthese and lower wattage for the orchids. The wattage depends on how many plants you have and how big the grow tents are. You can find them all over Google and Amazon in different prices/sizes/wattage. For a grow tent, you will probably want a light array similar to this that spreads the light around well inside the tent:

So I checked the "1000W" and it is showing 55.1 at the wall with only the "veg" turned up to 100%. Not sure how it is doing yet because it is the new one in the second tent. The other one I have to move a few things around to get back to the outlet and cannot do that at the moment. I will try to remember to get around to it though.

I have one that's similar to yours (it's "1200 watt") and one that's "600 watt," running over a 4x4 scrog. I am a beginner grower, and about 2 weeks from harvest on my 2nd indoor grow. Both cycles went well, and produced some really great bud, but I think the lights were the weakest point in my whole setup. Biggest issue I've seen is the power and penetration of the lights.

Also, the two lights that I have perform differently. This one is smaller, but plants seem to like it better. This is the larger one I have(https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B01JLKUA2W/ref=oh_aui_search_detailpage?ie=UTF8&psc=1). Both are OK, I mean they are cheap so I can't really complain. If I can get a few more grows out of them, I'll be happy.

Also, I augment with 5-6 CFL bulbs to get edges and other shaded areas.

Alright, thank you!

Regarding the second, I got it a few weeks ago, but it had clearly been shedding leaves before I bought it. How do you know it didn't have enough light?

Regarding light, since it appears all of my plants are on the verge from dieing due to lack of sunlight, I apparently need to buy a grow light. Would this work, put over rows of these plants, and how many should be going over head plant and how many hours a day should they be on for?

Slow on the game, but here’s an affordable LED system. I’ve used it and it has worked great for my plants. Note that the plants live in a terrarium next to an east-facing window at around 5000 ft elevation, so I do have some natural lighting. But one of my violets has been blooming for nearly a year now after adding the LEDs. The light does not get hot either.

I like these the best. There are 3 heads, and you can adjust the brightness. It also has a simple timer (for 4, 8 or 12 hours). My Triostar unfurls 2-3 new leafs every week since I purchased the lights.

I also have these lights. Since I transferred my other plants from the sill to the bookshelf, they do not have any sunlight at all now (the bookshelf is in a dark corner of the room), so I decided to have the imitation of sun for them. I've never have a full-spectrum grow light before, but so far my plants like it.

I also have two of this light. It is probably a previous generation already, since I bought it more a year ago. It doesn't have such bright light, so now I use it for propagation and to supplement the natural light my plants get, sitting 2 feet away from the window.

u/nunguin · 1 pointr/Cooking

This is the one I have, you could probably go even more budget than that! I water every couple days (or whenever the plant starts to get a little droopy).

These are the ones in the pic, https://www.amazon.com/dp/B073GRNGRM/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_i_aeDADbWKEBW3P . I have them on a timer and they have been reliable. I have a mix of light needs in that little corner, but they seem to keep things happy and stable through winter. Light growth, but good color retention until spring gets warm enough for the balcony. I can only recommend them because they work for me, but I can't say I know anything about grow lights.

u/FrisbeesAndStuff · 1 pointr/houseplants

u/Current_Selection · 1 pointr/succulents

I've been browsing the grow light thread and thinking about getting more succulents before winter, and would like some input on which setup seems better or if you would recommend something else entirely. This adjustable growlight which has a gooseneck and clip (also comes with option for timer) or this bulb and this clamp light? I currently don't have many succulents at all (which obviously can change) so I don't need the light to cover a huge area. Should I set up a specific area to do this with shelving etc (please recommend if so) or is on top of a cedar chest on trays fine?

I'm pretty new to this and appreciate any advice I can get here.

I think possibly the SBreef, though would it be better to get 1-2 sets of basic plant models, of the larger models.

I use a mix of aquasoil and fert tabs, and have a 20 lb CO2 canister / victor CO2 regulator.

u/EnterpriseNCC1701D · 1 pointr/Hydroponics

Okay thanks. I was going to wrap the jars in foil with the reflective side out and place fish stones on top of the rock wool to prevent light from touching the roots. I think I'll look into UV light growing with soil and pot set ups. I can assume the plants you did not list work with the mason jar set up?

Also, this worked well in some guys video and are the perfect size for the shelf I am using.

u/aminy23 · 1 pointr/gardening

When you mix red, blue, and green light, you end up with white. Plants absorb red and blue, and reject/reflect green (hence there color). Blue light is necessary for chlorophyll production, red light is used in photosynthesis. Plants only utilize certain colors, and white light would have a lot of extra colors in it that will go to waste, and less of what the plants actually want. Check out this Wikipedia photo (also shows why fluorescent lights suck). This is the grow light that I personally have used with great results (NOT an affiliate link), it provides plenty of light output and I have it around 12-14" above my plants, no issues with legginess. There's many styles of LED Grow lights available, such as these tubes at the home depot. If you hunt around on Amazon, 4.5 star rated grow lights can be found for under $10, I can't imagine high output tubes being cheaper than that. Lumen ratings usually aren't provided with colored lights. I've been able to fit a 10x20 tray under my grow light without issue, my grow light was 20w. I understand your budged constraints, in lieu of shelves and aquariums i use a cheapo plastic ice chest.

but im looking into investing into another LED light, this time a 600W to add to my 4x4 tent.

Looking at a few options but im not sure if they're good or not.

vivosun 600w vivosun is reliable and great but its cost is 120$

This no name brand named wakyme is only 60$ and has a dual switch and comes with a few things, but i've never seen any on this subreddit and the reviews seem alright but im not sure.

and lastly this one, phlizon tons of reviews, seems like an older model but also comes with goodies and is only 80$ with a dual switch.

should i go with ol reliable and spend almost double without a dual switch and no goodies with it, or do some of you use these brands and know they are reliable and great to sustain my 4x4 tent with my already 300W led light which is doing great.

u/ravekitt · 1 pointr/houseplants

Your spider plant should be able to adjust quite well. They do just fine in low light.

In terms of growlights, check out this post comparing different types of growlights. The guide is aimed more at succulents but anything that works for a succulent is going to be good enough for pretty much any other plant.

Also, depending what your budget is like, Gardener's Supply has a great selection of pre-made growlight systems that work very well but they are a bit on the pricier side.

Edit: Forgot to add something. If you're talking about one of these flexible neck grow lights, I actually have one for my succulents. It has worked ok for me but in terms of succulents you have to have the lights super close to the plants (I have mine maybe half an inch above them) and I'm also pairing that with a lot of bright southern light. I definitely would not recommend them if they're going to be your main source of light.

The only functionality I lose is the auto turn on/off light. I was growing Thai Basil, Italian Basil, Dill, Thyme, Parsley. Best part is it grows indoors, year round.

Thanks for the detailed response! So if my understanding is correct if I went with potting soil in a small pot would I use the hydroponic nutrients instead of water when "watering" or use both? Would that then replace the need for fertilizer as well? As for lighting would a cheap grow light like this work? After a fair amount of research I am still unsure about what would be a good grow light for the plant on a budget.

We haven't found ones we particularly like at our house since we're always switching up our ~grand vision~ for our plants, lol. This one was the darling of r/houseplants for a while. Definitely search here, r/houseplants, r/succulents, or even r/plants for more suggestions. Threads about them pop up all the time.

u/chivesinmyaxx · 1 pointr/houseplants

Sure! https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07JLJFWNY/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_i_Z8ArDbSVTE5QE Some of the reviews say the lights die pretty fast like within a few months so take caution. I have only had these lights for a little less than two weeks. Its not a very strong light so with succulents and other sun loving plants I keep the light about 2 inches away.

Got the grow light from Amazon.

Has good reviews on Amazon! 😁💡

I'm definitely going to give that greenhouse a shot and put it on my heat pad. So one more question if you don't mind... Would a grow-light like this one work for a greenhouse this size or would I need something bigger?

This is the light. I will maybe move both heads to aim at my plants and see if that improves color. I’m glad with just one they haven’t stretched. I will definitely move it closer and have it on longer from now on though, thank you

u/headlessprincess · 1 pointr/houseplants

They definitely sell these but in white on amazon. Here's just one example! https://www.amazon.com/Ankace-Spectrum-Gooseneck-Lights-Replaceable/dp/B07PFHMNC9/ref=sr_1_6?keywords=full+spectrum+grow+light&qid=1568249625&sr=8-6 I have never used them - am currently in the process of shopping for mine - so I can't speak to their efficacy

u/RickyDe · 1 pointr/proplifting

I bought it on amazon- It’s low wattage but seems to be making a big difference so far. Here’s the link https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07PFHMNC9/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_i_Hm0SCbP1J3EE8.

u/Skinnyd007 · 1 pointr/outdoorgrowing

Yeah, small scale like that, put $15-20 into something like this, or a simple desk/clip lamp with cfl would work.

Will do the job for starting seedlings for an outdoor grow, make sure to slowly harden them to sunlight during transition.

I have this one

and this one.

u/nlbickett · 1 pointr/IndoorGarden

i just received this one a few days ago. so im not sure how well it's working yet. but i do enjoy the large clip, long lights and all of the functions (ie like automatic 6 dimmer options, 3,6,12 hr timer, and being able to turn on one two or three lights). so far it is very worth the money!

u/EngineerZing · 1 pointr/gardening

That 1500W would grow indoor fruit and veg. It doesn't really draw 1500W rather it is an equivalent to I believe HPS. I would go for a 3500K-4000K rather than the blurple. Depending on how much you want to spend, check out this : Spider Farm LED

I'm def happy with how it turned out. My second build and my favorite part is the ability to reverse the fans. Could turn them all into charcoal filters if the smell becomes an issue. So far, just one set of fans with activated charcoal is doing it. If i were to do it over, I'd probably skip the sidelights. It's a little overkill - there's 150w pulling in 2.5 sq ft right now

What do you think of the Spiderfarmer lights on amazon? They boast tons of those diodes, a reputable driver, from what i've heard (meanwell) and are pretty damn well priced. Also I like the full, white spectrum for a lot of reasons.
No fans only heatsinks, and they're pretty light. It's dimmable, but it's kind of a pain in the ass as it's not easily accessible and is operated by a screw. If they made a real, readable dimmer knob, that would be a huge upgrade.

200w actual draw, full spectrum, QB. This is the light I bought in case you wanted to look at it

u/snmnky9490 · 1 pointr/microgrowery

This Spider Farmer SF2000 Quantum Board uses the same LM301B chips as HLG and others, but comes already pre-assembled for a good price and has good reviews. $300 for a 200+W QB is a pretty good deal and should be enough to veg your full 3x3 and would mostly cover it for flowering. Adding another smaller light later on would fill it out for flowering.

The Marshydro SP150 is another option. They use Epistar diodes instead of the absolute best LM301Bs but they have an awesome heatsink are IP65 waterproof, and are close in efficiency (The PPFD with the included spec sheet states 2.57μmol/J as opposed to the 2.7 in the LM301B boards.) I have one and it works great in my little 18"x30" tent (along with the SP250 in my 2'x4' tent). Two of these SP150 would provide perfect coverage for your 3"x3" tent at 300W.

4-5 inch, my friend. Tomorrow my red/blue LED light gonna come in the mail and I'm gonna transition over to that light temporary until I set up my grow tent.

https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00PBCG8X0/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o00_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

u/DerkerDerker · 0 pointsr/microgrowery

Dude, don't get the light with the ballast. It'll be hot and difficult to manage temperature, etc. You should use LEDs. Try ones like this one:

King Plus 1000w Double Chips LED Grow Light Full Spectrum for Greenhouse and Indoor Plant Flowering Growing (10w Leds) https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0185OLBPK/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_xqPizb00PCJG9

This light is stronger, quieter, and cooler to operate. Your plants and electricity bill will thank you. It's also cheaper than the light with the ballast! Buy yourself an ice cream cone or something with the money you save. It's a good idea to get a 6 inch fan and carbon filters as well. Good luck!

u/goathill · 0 pointsr/Homesteading

check this l.e.d. setup. they work great, last forever, are efficient and cheap
