No - the PnP mattress toppers are not safe to use before kiddo is 2 years old. The thin "board" that comes with it is what you should use prior to 2 years to comply with AAP. You can, however, get a fitted quilted sheet made for PnPs - usually waterproof and add just a bit of fluff. Just check to make sure the dimensions match your model.

My son slept in an Arm's Reach cosleeper til he was 5 months (same size as a pack and play) and I got a mattress for it since the pad it comes with is pretty hard. We got a Naturepedic organic one (generous gift actually from MIL) but there are all kinds on Amazon - just look for play yard mattress or portable crib mattress and be sure to check your dimensions.

I also got these sheets for it: http://www.amazon.com/American-Baby-Company-Organic-Interlock/dp/B001KZH692/ref=pd_cp_ba_1 They're the softest comfiest sheets ever and I wish I had them for our bed.

As for getting her to sleep in it... that I don't really know :) But when my son was a newborn he only wanted to sleep on me, and I just kept trying to put him down in the cosleeper. Eventually he mostly slept there, and now he's a year and sleeps in a crib in his room.

We are currently using a pack and play as a bassinet for our daughter and it has worked great so far. I have it right up next to our bed so I can hold her hand if she gets fussy. She's still getting used to laying down flat in it and has a hard time falling asleep, but is doing better. We got these sheets http://www.amazon.com/American-Baby-Company-Organic-Interlock/dp/B001KZH692/ref=br_it_dp_o_nS_nC?ie=UTF8&colid=2SPZFJZQWD3GU&coliid=I7YV4NY3V7HX9 from Amazon and they're so soft and fit great. We were supposed to get a Graco pack and play, but we were gifted a Baby Trend brand one and it fits fine on it. I got 2 sets and thankful that I did. We've already had two nighttime sheet changes in the 2 1/2 weeks since she's been home. I also have one of those Angelcare baby movement safety monitors and my husband found a way to place thick cardboard under the mattress so that it works as well. I love the peace of mind that monitor brings.

My parents have a Pack n Play at their house for when we visit. We got these fitted sheets for it because otherwise LO's scooting around in the night woke him up. I would think Graco fitted sheets would be ok.

I got the PnP with the bassinet attachment and 2 quilted sheets (nice to have a backup if LO pees during naps or at night). Exact items linked below:
