Just bring the head up to temperature and wipe it off w/a paper towel.
Also, like many of us you might want to have one of these on hand for the future (LOL)

It seems to have pretty good reviews, and I'm trying to find a solution I can learn with without spending a few hundred more bucks. I know that I'll just end up replacing it at some point to get something better, but... is it decent enough quality for a first machine?

Or, alternatively, does anyone have recommendation for buying a used machine, or something to get started with?

I don't believe either of the ones you suggested have a pressure gauge. IMO it's rather important to have one to do quality presses.

I also use 2x? And cut them to size. The BTS pre press was such a good investment. I have 2x4 bags I'm finishing and 2x8 on deck.

I've actually had success in fixing warped records and jackets using one of these: https://www.amazon.com/Cricut-EasyPress-2-12x10-Inches/dp/B07G4V5PGJ/. The temp goes down low enough that you're not going to melt the record if you let it sit for 10-15 seconds.

My process is: Clean the record and place on hard, flat surface. Cover with parchment paper (NOT WAX PAPER), and iron needed areas. Immediately place flat heavy object on top of warm record until cool. Repeat as necessary to remove warping.

And yes, it is a whale. The concept was whalesongs. They use vibrations to convey information to whales, even miles away. This guy was basically crying for help (innards falling out, so it’s too late), but so loudly that the ground beneath him begins to break open.
