Speaking as someone with a ton of digestive issues, here is my advice (which I'm semi-recycling from another comment I made a while ago). Basically, there's no test for IBS; it's kind of a diagnosis of last resort, like, "welp, you don't have stomach ailment X or Y or Z... so it's probably IBS." With that in mind, treatment is super subjective so just try a bunch of things and whatever works for you, you keep.

Anyway, this is what works for me. You could try taking a digestive enzyme to help breakdown what you're eating. These are actually for kids but they work really well for me any time I feel gross. I've also been taking this probiotic for years now -- specifically because it has B. infantis which has been studied to help with IBS because (if I remember right) it improves gastric emptying. You could try a Low FODMAP diet which eliminates any food that can ferment in the gut which can lead to bloating. It's not a permanent diet -- you stop eating anything that could cause upset and then you reintroduce foods to see which ones affect you.

tl;dr try anything you hear works for other people and hopefully some of it works for you

This is the one I take, but there are lots of other ones out there. My doctor said to look specifically for “lactobacillus acidophilus” when choosing one.

A little of this for maintaining healthy vaginal flora might be a good start http://www.amazon.com/Jarrow-Formulas-Fem-Dophilus-Capsules/dp/B0013OUK3E

Rephresh from the store is very very pricey, but you can buy femdophilus on amazon, which is basically the same thing, for MUCH cheaper.

u/Juno_Malone · 6 pointsr/hotsaucerecipes

By lactose, do you mean lactose sugar? Lactose sugar doesn't contain any live cultures (I mean there may be some dormant wild yeast/bacteria in there), so that's just going to add more food for whatever eventually takes hold of your ferment - wild yeast, Lactobacillus on the peppers, etc.

If you mean pitching Lactobacillus cultures, yes that would work and probably help a bit. Something like this would work well (it's what I use for kettle-souring beers), but a healthy ferment consists of several species of Lactobacillus, and you may get less than optimal results relying on a single strain. Some good literature on this available here, but doesn't appear to be full-text :(

Another solid option would be to pitch a little bit of brine from a previous ferment, especially kraut brine which will have a nice mix of all the good Lactobacillus spp.

Liquid whey should work too, but I've never tried it myself.

Completely, late to the party. I recommend taking probiotics! It fixed my constipation! I have a cup of homemade butter milk and also take these probiotics:

Mmm...yogurt sours.

I'm currently on the Ultimate Flora for Women probiotic train.

Brett is currently chomping away at the residual sugars and phenols from the two belgians strains I used.

u/chisquaratops · 5 pointsr/Homebrewing

I use Swanson L. Plantarum pills, 2 pills per gallon. Cheap and easy, works like a charm. Sours to my preference in ~18-24 hours. Lately, after having one batch go a bit too sour, I've been erring slightly on the side of undersouring, and finishing with a small dose of lactic acid to dial in that last bit of punch.

u/starstough · 5 pointsr/Hypothyroidism

Step 1 is get your lab results in your hands.

Post them here, but here are some guidelines: If TSH is over 3, given your symptoms, you need to find a doctor, no matter how many doctors it takes, who will treat you. If it is under 3, this will be way more difficult.

If you can't find a different doctor, the other approach is to demand that your Free T3 and Free T4 are tested along with iron, and vitamins B and D. It would also be worth it to check for TPO antibodies.

If you already know your iron, B and D are low, start supplementing those daily. I also recommend a daily probiotic like Hyperbiotics PRO-15. Magnesium may also help. I trust NOW brand for all my supplements.

If you decide to search for another doctor, take a look at this list of hypothyroidism symptoms. Write down every single one of them that you have as well as the time frame and your current regimen. Bring these to every single appointment until you find someone willing to explore this further, and make it clear that you are willing to explore any possible explanation, even if it isn't thyroid related, but that the thyroid is the obvious first place to look.
[Here are some recommendations current as of March 2015.] (https://www.uspreventiveservicestaskforce.org/Page/Document/RecommendationStatementFinal/thyroid-dysfunction-screening#consider)

Even according to those recommendations (which are for non-pregnant asymptomatic adults) They say that they basically can't really recommend anything because they have insufficient data... Frankly, what I would harp on is that you are NOT asymptomatic. You are SYMPTOMATIC. And that always requires further inquiry. Furthermore, these recommendations say to test every 3-6 months if anything abnormal is found, and your doctor wants to only test yearly. Point this out. Also point out that, if she does have your chart, gaining 100 lbs in a year while active is highly suspect. Combined with the depression/anxiety, which aren't usually seen together unless there's something physical going on, says that further exploration is necessary. Point out that blood tests, given your symptoms, are not a risk to her as a doctor. Point out that you are taking responsibility for your own health and deserve to be respected in this.

And if all else fails and you happen to have a few hundred dollars laying around... You can actually request your own blood tests from many labs. It just costs a lot to do that, but you can pick your own tests and take the results to a doctor and see what they make of it.

There is no reason for a doctor to "refuse" to take your situation seriously. Even if it isn't your thyroid, something is going on.

One which i can recommend from my own personal experience is Flourish Probiotics by Eu Natural. I was having some digestion problems. i was recommended this and after much research settles with it. And glad I did. I will attach a link so you can check it out:

u/365wong · 4 pointsr/relationship_advice

The bathroom after sex is a big one. If she hasn't done this previously that may be where it started. Also, for the yeast infections start a targeted probiotic like this. This will help over time and should be a part of her routine until her PH balances, switch to scent free soap, laundry detergents, cut down on sugars, alcohol, really anything that yeast thrives on.

Remind her to NEVER douche, or even wash her vagina, it's self cleaning and these things further unbalance her natural PH.

More importantly note that this woman is having sex with you and it hurts her. Take a break from sex. Don't be selfish (not accusing you).

It concerns me that you're not phrasing it "what CAN I do?"...

That's my 2¥ on her health. She should also speak to a new doctor and research the topic independently. Reddit is not a place for medical advice. (Right?)

Elimination diet would be a good thing to try.

I experienced something similar recently and these are what help me:

White rice, watery fruits (no bananas & dates), cheese, romaine lettuce, curry powder, and avocados are the main things I've found to be safe. Apple juice fasting also helps me a ton. Olive oil had significant effects as well.

Iron can feed pathogens, so try avoiding foods with it.

u/leahlikesweed · 4 pointsr/WomensHealth

i struggled for 1.5 years with no relief until i tried this. if i feel an episode coming on i usually take 2 that day. i've been taking 1-2 per day for almost 2 months and haven't had any issues! https://www.amazon.com/Renew-Life-Womens-Probiotic-Supplement/dp/B004ZNDFIW you can probably get them cheaper at your local grocery store... CVS is very expensive. should be around 20 bucks at a grocery chain. make sure you take them every day for at least 30 days.

u/Daft-Pretty-boys · 4 pointsr/kratom

I really like taking it when I’m at work but I tend to sleep way to much on the weekends. I wonder if that’s because of the Kratom.

Do you take on an empty stomach or after a meal? Also, you should try taking two teaspoons of Bragg’s Apple Cider Vinegar before.

I usually take two teaspoons of apple cider vinegar before my Kratom first thing in the morning, eat my breakfast Taco when I get to work, and then at 10am drink my Joe Rogan Green Kale Shake to maximize my mood. It’s fucking amazing. Your body will thank you for drinking the shake by boosting your mood.

The only thing I can compare the shake to is the feeling you get after two beers but without the cloudy feeling. Just talkative and in a good mood.

Edit: I also take Probiotics to help with absorption and constipation.

If you’re not paying attention to your guy flora, it’s no wonder you’re depressed.

u/myreality91 · 4 pointsr/Homebrewing

I get mine from Whole Foods when I travel to the nearest large city.

If you don't have a Whole Foods type place nearby to look, you can order Swanson's probiotic capsules. These are the same lacto strain and will sour the same as Good Belly.

u/psubrew · 4 pointsr/Homebrewing

There is a pure l. plantarum product made by a company named Swanson: https://www.amazon.com/Swanson-Plantarum-Support-Billion-Drcaps/dp/B00BZ3YWXC/ref=sr_1_4_a_it?ie=UTF8&qid=1500557987&sr=8-4&keywords=Lactobacillus+Plantarum+299V

I just had a Berliner this weekend that was made with Goodbelly probiotic drink, which I believe only contains l. plantarum as well. I am currently souring a batch of Berliner with the Swanson product FWIW.

u/arrialexa · 4 pointsr/Nootropics

Have you tried this probiotic before? Lactobacillus rhamnosus is one of the strains in it. I've tried a lot of probiotics and this has been the best one for me.

u/Swift_LawnGnome · 4 pointsr/Anxiety

Would a probiotic supplement such as this one work in the same way?

u/transt · 3 pointsr/IAmA

I have IBS and it used to make me hesitant to even go outside at times and these pills:

http://www.amazon.com/Digestive-Advantage-IBS-Irritable-Syndrome/dp/B0007IQMVG/

have given me a new life. I take one every night before bed and I rarely have any problems now or even a cramped stomach. They are sold at all CVSs and other places like that and for the relief they give they are dirt cheap. They take about a week to start working though and you have to take it once a day or it will wear off after a few days.

u/discountonme · 3 pointsr/ibs

Digestive advantage on amazon. Recommended by GI and definitely helps.

u/td42 · 3 pointsr/benzorecovery

Less is more, be careful taking anything that might be stimulative.

In my case I introduced more vegetables and occasionally eat paleo/primal meals (but have yet to adopt it completely), along with a basic multivitamin/mineral once a week.

Supplement wise, it's hard to say what really helps. Anything that does provide improvement will be minimal.

The only things I personally used (and still use) is Turmeric+black pepper (this brand specifically), for the anti-inflammatory benefits -- during benzo withdrawal I should imagine inflammation is increased.

After recovery I introduced probiotics, because years of benzo usage, and often the things we do while on benzos can't be good for the gut. Some of them can (in theory) help improve our mental state, and indeed the brain-gut link is often underestimated. (I used this one for 30 days, and now I'm using Primadophilus Reuteri, once it runs out I will probably just take 1 a week of a general one)

It is hard to say if any of these had any significant benefit, because I have been using them for months and haven't really stopped.

Recently (now that I'm 6 months clean) I added Lion's mane for the nerve healing benefits (specifically Time health's brand) -- but I probably won't take it long term (just a few weeks of 'treatment').

u/mr_bacon_pants · 3 pointsr/Fitness

Fucking lowlives. Sorry your mom got scammed. These are just general supplements that won't really do anything compared to a healthy diet. I wouldn't recommend buying them all. Maybe a multivitamin and fish oil, or a b-vitamin if she doesn't eat meat. Otherwise, they're likely a waste of money.

Here are some supplements I've taken that look like basically the same thing, though I don't see Amway's nutritional facts (with the list of ingredients) so I just have to go by the marketing nonsense on their site to guess at what all is in each.

Also, /r/supplements is great for questions like this.

  1. just looks like a multivitamin
  2. a superfood powder
  3. cal-mag + d
  4. fish oil
  5. digestive enzyme
  6. b vitamins
  7. vitamin c complex
  8. green tea
  9. green tea with coenzyme q10. not sure about a supplement for that
  10. probiotics
  11. chondroitin, glucosamine, boswellia, and hyaluronic acid complex. you can find supplements and creams with these ingredients.
u/CiggyTardust · 3 pointsr/Nootropics

Yes, here is the probiotic I was taking that I suspect is the issue and here is the yeast based one that I don't think is the culprit as I'd been taking it for a while before starting the aforementioned one. I started taking these supplements to kind of re-balance my system as I also was taking Sovereign Silver daily to help with acid reflux and possible SIBO... I REALLY regret doing any of this right now. Was a bit too cavalier about my microbiome.

I've struggled with cycling BV and yeast infections my whole life honestly until a friend suggested a few products to me. More importantly I haven't had a single episode of BV or yeast infection the entire pregnancy thus far!

Figuring out the what was causing it was a huge hurdle, and there's a few products and suggestions out there that you might find will totally help. Figuring out what imbalance (probiotics) you'll need will definitely help! Not sure if this goes against subreddit rules, but killing vaginal bacteria and fighting yeast infections are the worst, it only compounds your problem unfortunately.

It might seem counterintuitive, but taking probiotics (specifically for vaginal/feminine health) was the best thing I ever did. :) Try a product like this - good luck!!

A couple years ago I was super stressed at life and doing 2-a-days to try to cope. The combo of stress and too much exercise led to hideous breakouts, which added more stress.

Everyone's skin and bodies are weird and wonderful in their own fun ways, but I went to a derm and my gyno, and this helped:

  • cut out dairy
  • wash face twice a day with Cerave Hydrating Cleanser and a Clarisonic (or just the cleanser if it was a mid-day shower), plus Cerave AM and PM moisturizers
  • changed birth controls (went from Nuvaring to Viorele but IANAD)
  • went on tetracycline for a few months (then had to go on a ~lady~ probiotic supplement for yeast infections/BV)
  • Retin A micro, introduced slowly

Stuff that didn't work for me at all but sometimes works for other people:

  • drying topicals like clindamycin, BP, SA, tea tree oil, witch hazel, milk of magnesia
  • oil cleansing, coconut oil, washing with just water

Like I say, this is what worked for me when I noticed what sound like similar symptoms to yours. Check out /r/skincareaddiction, and maybe go see some medical pros if you have the means. Good luck, and keep working out! Like others mentioned, most people don't even notice what other people at the gym look like.
u/dexterduck · 3 pointsr/AskCulinary

Not a strictly culinary answer, but if you aren't able to find a good substitute, consider getting your BF the gift of a good lactase supplement. As a lactose intolerant person, it's a real lifesaver.

u/GeminiVI · 3 pointsr/Supplements

Try probiotics. They just linked chronic fatigue to gut bacteria.

Here's a review off Amazon some guy wrote up about the different probiotics on the market.

https://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/review/B001LIW11Q/R1USCYDMO2NRDA/ref=cm_cr_dp_mb_rvw_1?ie=UTF8&cursor=1

I've been having a really bad time with chronic exhaustion and my diet has never been very healthy. I can tell my gut isn't that great as my poop is never a solid log anymore. Trying to eat better.

u/Never_Really · 3 pointsr/diabetes

I take these. I know that because the capsules are going through the stomach, a majority of the pill probiotics get killed off, but I notice a difference when I take them vs. when I don't. Whether it's psychosomatic or not, I like 'em.

I sometimes make my own yogurt with starters from these guys. I used to be on top of the yogurt every two weeks, but it's more like every two months now.

u/FuggyFresh · 3 pointsr/Paleo

I had the same issue and these help a lot. I take one a day on an empty stomach.

NOW Foods Probiotic-10 25 Billion, 50 Vcaps https://www.amazon.com/dp/B002S1U7RU/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_coVhyb57AV1MP

u/pizzaandchocolates · 3 pointsr/WomensHealth

This is the probiotic: https://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B004ZNDFIW/ref=ya_aw_od_pi?ie=UTF8&psc=1
They have it at Kroger and Walmart, but I forget to buy them so I prefer the subscription.

The recipe:
Step 1: buy a douche, whole milk plain yogurt and distilled water. (Don't refrigerate the water)
Step 2: get a plastic cup or chode cup w/e you can use to easily pour with.
Step 3: empty the douches contents in the stick and rinse. Then fill the bottle up with distilled water.
Step 4: pour the measured water into the cup and add 2 tbsp of yogurt. Stir until consistent.
Step 5: pour your yogurt mix into the douche. You will probably have too much mix but that's okay.
Step 6: I can't stand cold stuff touching my girly parts so I usually microwave it for 5 seconds or so. Now you lay down
In the tub and try to angle your lower half upward. Give the douche a little shake and pull the applicator until you hear it click.
Step 7: insert the douche as far as you can will while still being comfortable and gently squeeze. Once it starts to drip down your butt you know your canal is full, but don't stop squeezing until it is empty.
Step 8: set a timer for 5-10 mintues ans try not to push the solution out. The goal is to keep it in for as long as possible.
You're all done! Just clean with the soap you normally use! Bam!

Good luck in the future!!

But I haven't been using it for that long so I can't necessarily recommend it. It came recommended by simpleskincarescience.com. That site has a good article on probiotics. The top one he recommended more was really expensive. So I thought I'd try this one instead. Plus I wanted pills that were easy to swallow.

I read a study that rosacea sufferers saw improvement with L. paracasei. But overall skin health is improved with other strains. I think the simpleskincarescience.com might have a reference to the study.

That's when you yell at your colon "THIS IS WHY WE CAN'T HAVE NICE THINGS" hahah. But yeah, try the half cap for a bit and then try and stop it if you feel your body has a handle on things. I've heard long-term stool softener dependency has unpleasant consequences.

You could also try switching up your probiotic. I had luck with Garden of Life Raw: Ultimate Care and kind of disastrous luck with a different one. I think it all depends on what your gut flora is missing (or has in excess) which one will benefit you best. It's a guessing game.

u/duff78 · 3 pointsr/Homebrewing

I use these, you can find them a little cheaper from other sellers if you look. Get 3-4 brews for under $10 and works really well.

Interesting, have you gotten decent tartness from it? I figured it was just a dud.

Never tried good belly but my most recent attempt was with the Swanson's probiotics. I made a starter with three capsules and pitched it into 6 gallons of wort a few days later. 36 hours of recirculating at 85-90F and it was almost too sour but the taste was considerably cleaner than anything else I've tried (Wyeast, Omega, grains). I can't recommend it enough.

D-mannose is a good idea when it comes to urinary tract infections. These are natural sugars that stick to E.Coli which is the bacteria that usually causes the UTIs. It then makes it easy to get rid of by drinking lots of water. So provided you get completely natural products, there is no harm in trying. Another remedy which i can recommend and will help to provide some relief and prevent UTIs from recurring and these are probiotics. Healthy, good bacteria that attack and fight off bad bacteria which are responsible for causing these conditions. You can boost your diet on yogurts, kefir or fermented milk and kombucha; these are rich sources of probiotic.

Other than that, you can also look into probiotic supplements. These are faster acting and much better when it comes to serving as a remedy to UTIs. But like I said earlier, knowing the source of your products are very important. Natural products are less likely to have health complications. I would recommend a brand, Eu Natural. These guys are highly trusted and recommended with natural products and supplements. They also provide Flourish Probiotics. This is a natural combination of good bacteria that will help to fight UTIs and also has some other health benefits. I will attach a link so you can have a closer look.

There are reviews there that say it cured their yeast problems.

If she is willing to try the probiotics, you should couch PIV sex for maybe a month or two and see how she is feeling on the probiotics.

If she is able to receive oral or be stimulated with your fingers (not in her vagina) without pain, then maybe ask her if you both can concentrate on each other through oral and manual stimulation while hopefully the probiotics help start to keep the yeast at bay (hopefully it will work).

The fact she can't enjoy PIV probably lowers her sex drive so maybe if you can both concentrate on pleasing each other in other ways, her libido might start coming back again.

But in the end, you would be justified in ending the relationship so that you can find a partner you can have sex with.

u/iLLyNoiZe · 2 pointsr/Supplements

Garden of Life ftw. I'm not a doctor, but I have family members that are. Can't give you medical advice, but there can be a plethora of things that are giving you the issues you mentioned, most common things based off what you said is heart burn or GERD (google it). I'd recommend you see a GI doctor, they'll probably recommend doing a scope or something, or may just start you on PPI's like omeprozole, zantec or something. Keep in mind the things you eat and see if they make things worse. Like if you eat a tomato, drink coffee or OJ, or anything citrus or spicy, does that make you burp and give you heartburn? If so, you probably have acid reflux which is pretty common.

Uncommon things- H. Pylori, ulceration, etc etc

All that on the side, I religously preach about probiotics to everyone I know having gut issues. It's not a miracle cure, but definitely helps if you have an imbalanced diet. Since I started probiotics, I seldom take any kind of acid reflux medication unless I know I'm going to be eating food or drinking that might fuck with my gut, but even when I don't take it and eat/drink things that might affect me, I don't have symptoms as often.

It has many cultures in it, which I have read is beneficial. Some brands tout that their product has millions of cells, but a variety of cultures has proven to be effective, in my experience.

Best of luck!

I have read some things about certain kinds of probiotics being good for vaginal health. There are apparently a couple of kinds of good bacteria identified by researchers to be good: Lactobacillus rhamnosus, GR-1 and Lactobacillus reuteri, RC-14.

A product called Femdophilus contains both these kinds of Probiotic and, if the hundreds of Amazon reviews are worth a damn, works really well for some ladies.

Femdophilus

Good luck! I know how awful itching down there can be. :(

u/justcurious12345 · 2 pointsr/TheGirlSurvivalGuide

This is the one I picked: http://smile.amazon.com/Jarrow-Formulas-Fem-Dophilus-Capsules/dp/B0013OUK3E?sa-no-redirect=1

There are some that look really awesome that say vaginal suppositories right on them, but they're more expensive. With these, I used two pills at bed time for maybe a week or so, and since then I've just used one any time I start to feel itchy. You know that "Is this a yeast infection" stage where you know in a couple days it'll probably be the real deal? That's when I'd insert one just in case, and it worked well for years. I'm dealing with yeast now, but I think it's related to being pregnant and taking antibiotics.

CT-CV-ICU RN here. First and foremost, please get probiotics on board. Not the generic ones that you will find over the counter in the market, but medical grade probiotics; specifically, VSL#3 which has 400,000,000,000 bacteria per sachet. That may seem like a lot, but your gut (which is now viewed as the 2nd brain now) has trillions of bacteria living within inside you contributing into many things such as vitamin synthesis, maintaining homeostasis, and believe it or not, producing neurotransmitters! When I'm not taking on fresh post-op open hearts, I take septic patients and I commonly see our patients with sepsis being treated with heavy antibiotics, then being discharged with no information to repopulate their microbiome.

To get rid of your Cdiff. Buy VSL#3 and this Jarrow Formulas Saccharomyces Boulardii + MOS, 5 Billion Cells Per Capsule, Promotes Intestinal and Digestive Health, 90 Veggie Capsules https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0013OVW0E/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_26TCzbRMFMBAT

And mix them with Red Mills Unmodified potato starch which acts as food for the probiotics you're consuming. This is a resistant starch meaning your body cannot break this down for sugar.

Also, read up on Butyrate which is the most underrated natural substance our symbiotic friends produce!

Here is another site with some info from the University of Washington on Boric Acid supplements. I use them about 2x a week to keep YIs at bay. My doctor also just recommended taking a Saccharomyces Boulardii supplement. Basically the Saccaromyces Boulardii are a different type of yeast that "compete" for resources with the type of yeast that cause YIs, and therefore make it harder for the bad yeast to grow out of control.

I hope you get this under control!

u/tardust6 · 2 pointsr/TwoXChromosomes

Hi, I used to have the same problem with yeast infections. I use feminine probiotics (which are good for your stomach too!) that help break down my production of yeast. Here's some on amazon, but you can find them in like target/walmart in the womens feminine aisle. http://www.amazon.com/RepHresh-Probiotic-Feminine-Supplement-30-Count/dp/B001FOPQQS

When I have an itching problem, I would use the restroom frequently throughout the day, even if I didn't feeling like going and just felt a little moist down there. I carried baby wipes in my purse to clean up down there. I use summer eves feminine wash in the shower and try best not to get shampoo or body soap down there to effect it.

I avoid certain foods and drinks. Anything that contains a lot of yeast, I cut back on them, replacing bread with salads and healthy food (though I still eat bread daily, just not as much all the time). I definitely had to quit drinking beer, after drinking beer, it made my sweat smell yeasty like bread. My boobs smelled like hot crossed buns when I drank beer frequently.

TL;DR: Take the feminine probiotic pill each day, eat yogurt each morning, avoid bread/beer/yeasty-things, wipe up when feeling moist down there, summers eve in shower. Also, wipe up good after sex, but don't clean inside your vagina though.

u/elbowstoopointy · 2 pointsr/TwoXChromosomes

Congrats! Reminds me of when I finally banished the repeat bacterial vaginosis from hell I had on and off for YEARS. Every time I went to the doctor I would get a script for antibiotics that resulted in a yeast infection that would cause BV and start the cycle all over again.

Then finally after seeing a thread on using probiotic supplements I gave it a try and it was almost instant relief. This stuff is a miracle. Makes me kinda mad that doctors don't at least suggest some of these options! Taking some OTC probiotics or changing your TP is a lot easier and cheaper than tests and medications.

u/cg037 · 2 pointsr/xxketo

I dunno, I haven't experienced YI on keto. But, when I was pregnant (and not keto), I got them more often than I would've liked. [This probiotic] (http://www.amazon.com/RepHresh-Probiotic-Feminine-Supplement-30-Count/dp/B001FOPQQS) was a game changer for me.

I started taking one every morning and it cleared up the one I was experiencing in 3 days. Never got another yeast infection again after i started taking it every day.

u/navyjeff · 2 pointsr/fffffffuuuuuuuuuuuu

Try some of these. They might work for you. At least now I can eat pizza, and if I happen upon some cream, it's not the end of the world.

u/Church_of_Cheri · 2 pointsr/loseit

I'm Lactose intolerant, as well as having issues with FODMAPs (short chained carbohydrates), which I think is very similar to what you have. I also have lots of allergies, including oral allergy syndrome and can't have uncooked greens of any time, plus lots of other foods that have fiber. I'm now on the Keto diet and loving it! I'm good with almost all the foods, and finding out a lot more about lactose intolerance. For example, harder cheeses and higher fat milk products like heavy cream, have very little if any lactose in them and I can eat them. I also didn't know there is lactose in wine, that was heartbreaking. Also, if you're out to eat or possibly have lactose, these help a lot, they're the only ones that work for me. Best of luck!

u/brian21 · 2 pointsr/lactoseintolerant

I will very very very strongly recommend Schiff's Lactose Defense Probiotic. Lactaid did not work for me, and I can eat half a pizza with this without issue. Sold at Amazon, Walmart, Walgreens, and probably more.

u/aipotsyd · 2 pointsr/90daysgoal

May I suggest a probiotic for your lactose intolerance. It's something you take daily, but I find it works much better than taking lactase with each dairy consumption. Plus, I find it to be much cheaper if you're planning on having dairy daily anyway. I will warn you though, that you should wait 3 or 4 days after starting before consuming dairy and those first few days were filled with bloating and gas (though not as bad as eating dairy without anything).

u/gcalpo · 2 pointsr/Cooking

I take it one step farther and take lactose pills from "Dietary Advantage" that are basically bacteria-on-a-pill (oversimplification) that help you digest lactose all day. One pill in the morning and no worries the rest of the day.

Edit: I have a subscription from Amazon for the 3-packs (96 doses total) I think this was the most cost-effective solution and I don't have to remember to stock up.

Yes you can definitely have a yeast infection and BV at the same time, you can also have a yeast infection that turns into BV and vice versa.

Last time I had BV I took Enzymatic Therapy Pearls: YB after browsing reviews for quite some time, they seemed to have the best ratings for the price. They worked like a charm - I also started with two a day, perhaps the levels of probiotics in the gummies you've been taking aren't high enough? Or it hasn't been long enough for them to take effect.

Also, drink lots and lots and lots of water. Cut down on your intake of sugar and processed grains if you can, this limits the food source for bad bacteria while you're waiting to get to the doctor.

And finally - YES, birth control CAN mess with your vaginal pH and cause yeast infections or BV. It happened to me last time I tried birth control, two weeks in I began to get yeast infection symptoms, which continued to worsen each day. Not only that, I could feel the itching get measurably worse about an hour after taking my pill each day. I stopped the birth control and the itching tapered off and disappeared within just a few days. Unfortunately, the yeast infection turned into BV (which cleared up after a week or so of taking the probiotics).

You might need to switch birth controls, sometimes your body just doesn't respond well to certain combinations of hormones.

ETA: Make sure you're wearing 100% cotton underwear! Let your parts breathe :)

u/Love_Indubitably · 2 pointsr/sex

I have tried Pearls YB for yeast infections and it worked quite well, also. I had some mild cramps for a day or two, but it cured the infection!

u/emaryth · 2 pointsr/TwoXChromosomes

You really need to try a probiotic. They basically balance the yeast and bacteria levels in your body. I currently use the Enzymatic Therapy Pearls for constipation but they also makes them for yeast balance.

u/RobotPigOverlord · 2 pointsr/hamsters

I had a hammy that had something very similar, poked her cheek with a piece of hay she stole from my guinea pigs, and it formed an abcess that required antibiotics and surgery. Make sure to give your hammy probiotics to replace any of the intestinal flora that the antibiotics kill off. This is a good one , mix half a capsule with a mashed blueberry or sprinkled on veggies they like. DMG is also a really helpful supplement (it boosts the body's immune response to infection), 0.1mL once a day would be the dose for a hamster, its tasteless so it mixes well with food or medicine.

u/viatessblog · 2 pointsr/ibs

I have had a lot of luck making my own yogurt out of coconut milk (canned, ingredients are just coconut + water) and NOW Foods probiotics. Here's a recipe.

You're not alone in using products every other day even if you're supposed to take it daily. I've done that with a lot of stuff, including the homemade yogurt.

Lately I've needed to add protein to my diet and haven't had any sensitivity issues to the probiotics in this powder. I know it's a big commitment to buy something that processed that your body might hate though.

I have a cat with IBD, and he has problems with chronic diarrhea/colitis symptoms.

I give him two dietary supplements. One is human grade, one is pet-grade.

Pet grade: Honest Kitchen Perfect Form. This is mainly a fiber supplement, but it also contains slippery elm bark, which works as a lubricant in the digestive tract, which reduces irritation and inflammation. I dose according to the instructions on the can. A $14 can lasted me a full year with daily use.

The human grade: Jarrow S. Boulardii. This is not a pro-biotic, but is a dietary yeast. The whole idea behind this is that your cats gut may not have a proper amount of good gut bacteria. The dietary yeast creates an explosion in good gut bacteria, which reduces inflammation.

I dose this at a near-human dose of 1 pill per day (and they are horse pills even for people), so a $40 bottle lasts 6 months. This is more than you would typically use on a pet---you'd only be using about half a pill. Problem with this stuff is that the MOS is bitter, so most cats won't eat it, you have to pill it. (Some cats are weird, like mine. He'll eat it.) Ideally, you'd buy a $10 bag of size 3 gelatin capsules and re-capsule it. The cat should get 1-2 per day. Warning: it WILL make your cat gassy and give them tummy rumbles until their body adjusts.

For this product, there is also a stop-diarrhea protocol which essentially calls for giving them a dose of this stuff every 4 hours for 24 hours, then dosing 2x/day, until the cat is stable enough to go to once a day.. I did do it after my cat had a particularly bad setback, and it worked.

I have been able to back off the use of these two products in recent weeks. My cat is currently stable using medication and prescription food, so I have been able to reduce the supplements. Ideally, I'd want to wean him off the steroids, but the supplements aren't miracle workers.

I have also tried Nexabiotic, but found that it was not strong enough to do any good for my cat.

The only vet-grade probiotic my vet stocks is Forti-Flora, and it simply didn't work. I found these supplements through a feline IBD support group. My vet had never heard of their use before, but since the ingredients couldn't hurt, she was all for trying them.

Here’s the bacteria I’m using
https://www.amazon.com/Swanson-Probiotics-Regularity-Gastrointestinal-Supplement/dp/B00BZ3YWXC

I treat this like yeast in that I make a starter and pitch the bacteria. 100g of malt extract, 1kg of water and 5 capsules of bacteria.

Mash normal for a wort and drop temperature to 40-50C and pitch the bacteria starter. It takes 24-36hr to get the pH down to 3.4-3.5ish.

Then I boil the wort again to kill the bacteria, cool and pitch my yeast.

u/storunner13 · 2 pointsr/Homebrewing

Your 6-row malt is not necessary as you're using malted wheat (which is enzymatic).

Skip the protein mash. I would also recommend against souring the mash, especially if you're not using a lactobacillus culture. This method is hit-or-miss with results, and you will be more likely to have a better product if you lauter and pitch a pure lacto culture into your kettle. http://www.milkthefunk.com/wiki/Wort_Souring#Souring_in_the_Boiler_.28Kettle_Sour.29

If you have a health foods store, you may be able to find goodbelly. Use the straight shot if you can, or use the juice (peach mango orange would be a good option). I'm not a huge fan of goodbelly, but lots of other homebrewers swear by it.

http://goodbelly.com/where-to-buy/

Otherwise, the health foods store might have lactobacillus plantarum capsules.

I used this to sour my berliner. used 10 capsules for a 5gal batch at 100f, left it for ~4 days and it got down to 3.1ph. plantarum works at lower temps than a lot of lacto, so while it could take longer, it will still chug along at room temp and get you where u want it eventually :). oh, and its prime, so you can likely get it before your brewday if you order now!

Many probiotics often contain prebiotics as well. There is also a popular train of thought among the probiotic community that they need to be encapsulated so they don't get killed by the acid in your stomach. They get released slowly over many hours after passing through the stomach.

Here is an example of a probiotic with many strains and contains prebiotics (often in the form of some type of fiber, in this case FOS or Fructooligosaccarides) and they also are time release like I mentioned before. That product is currently the best seller on amazon for probiotics. Slightly pricey, but if it works, totally worth it.

That is more than a nervous tummy. I know it's a pain in the butt (lol) but go see the specialist.

You could have something serious like colon cancer for all you know. Or if it isnt that serious, they might have some proper medication for you. Look into probiotics and fecal-transplants. They are making a lot of advancements in treating this sort of thing.

I think this is indeed a very good question. The gut is generally considered as the center of the immune system and hence a favorable gut flora will go a long way to boost the immune system and improve overall wellness. When it comes to gut bacteria, a safe and natural way to replenish the good bacteria is to take probiotics. And some sources are yogurts, kefirs, kombucha and all that or probiotic supplements. I'm thankful to have only mild IBS, but it definitely sucks. I suffer from loose stools rather than constipation, though.

In my particular case, I found a probiotic that I take every morning that ended up decreasing the number of loose stools to a more manageable amount. I had to stick with it for a week or two before I saw any results. Now, I find that as long as I avoid consuming too many milk products or coffee, and as long as I'm not under heavy stress, I am usually OK. I know it doesn't work for everyone, though.

The worst part about IBS for me is traveling, and interacting with a social group while suffering from bloating/cramps/gas. I can't imagine what my life would be like if that probiotic didn't work for me.

u/MissHampton · 1 pointr/medical

I've been dealing with IBS (self diagnosed) for about 5 years (almost 19 years old). It's been a real pain and has affected me going out to places and school. The best thing I've found is for my morning classes I eat plain oatmeal with a bit of sugar or egg whites. I also take this every morning. If I know I'm going to be some place where IBS flareup would especially suck I also try to eat a small plain dinner. Also try avoiding dairy as much as possible, many suffers are also lactose intolerant. Other than that, drink plenty of water, read up on your type of IBS (D or C) and good luck.

Yep, I take one a day, but if I miss a day or 2, it's not a big deal, the ibs issues don't come back or anything. It's a capsule, I just take it with water in the evening. I buy mine on Amazon

I really love to eat so I've always eaten mostly what I want, but the main trigger food for me was anything that was really spicy, like buffalo wings, one of my favorite foods of all time. I started taking this probiotic little over a month ago: http://www.amazon.com/dp/B0007IQMVG

^This probiotic changed my life completely. I'm still taking my pharmaceutical medication (Lialda, 1.2 gm 3x) and an over-the-counter (Imodium, 2 mg 3x) and one of these capsules every night before I go to bed. I've posted this in the Crohns subreddit but they've informed me that probiotics have a much more profound effect on Ulcerative Colitis victims. Please, please, please try this stuff if you have UC and you're not getting the help you deserve. I wish I would have tried this years ago. I'm sorry for going off on a tangent but the point I'm trying to make is with this probiotic I can eat literally whatever I want and I'm completely normal every day now.

Geez! 10 years on a constant antibiotic! I was on a low dose antibiotic for chronic bladder infections for about a year and even that amount of time did serious damage to my gut biome.

If anyone else is having issues with that, here are some probiotics I use that have helped replenish good bacteria:

As the mom of a little girl with Crohn's Disease I gotta come here and throw that out.

She had diarrhea for 10 days 2 summers ago. It finally stopped but the stomach pain didn't. Her dad has Crohn's so we got referring to a GI pretty quickly. A colonoscopy and endoscopy confirmed it.

I would try some probiotics first tho. See if that makes a difference. Here's a good one to try:

Right now i'm taking align because my doctor recommended it - I have been on it for about 3-4 weeks now and I haven't really seen much improvements. I was taking some other probiotic before that for a month but didn't see too much improvement either.

I just purchased https://smile.amazon.com/Garden-Life-Whole-Probiotic-Supplement/dp/B000GWG8FS?_encoding=UTF8&keywords=probiotic&qid=1486688706&ref_=sr_ph_1_s_it&sr=sr-1&th=1 one because it was cheaper and not sure if it would help or not. I used also eat LOTS of greek yogurt (which I haven't been eating recently) as well.

I don't eat beans too much these days but do eat a lot of broccoli/cauliflower/etc and what not. I'm trying to cut them out of my diet for obvious reasons.

For probiotics, Dr. Patrick swears by VSL #3 but it is quite expensive and seems like it might actually be too strong for some people. Labdoor has ranked some popular options. I don't put too much trust in their scoring system but you can create a free account and read through the reports of ones you might be interested in. I have an n=1 experience with a family member taking Garden of Life Primal Defense and doing quite well with that.

For prebiotics, the standard recommendation is to get enough fiber and to include some fermented foods in your diet such as kimchi, sauerkraut, kefir, or kombucha.

I second this. At one point I got a vaginal strep infection from a guy going down on me before he was showing symptoms of strep throat. Once the infection had run it's course I couldn't seem to get the smell or texture of my discharge to return to normal. I went back to the doctor several times to get tested for anything else and they told me I was normal. After getting fed up with no results I tried oral probiotics as a last resort. I was so skeptical I thought it was a waste of my money, but I had to be able to say I'd tried it before I moved on to something else. They made my vagina smell and feel AMAZING. It only took a few days and I noticed a difference in smell, texture, even some minor itchy irritation that I had just gotten used to went away. I was floored that taking a pill once a day could do so much for my poor vagina. The link is the brand I tried so I can't speak for other varieties, but holy shit if something so simple can fix her troubles why not try it?

That's great. Glad the prebiotics are helping you. I looked into probiotics and used them as well, and for some reason, Saccharomyces Boulardii seems to be different than the rest. Kind of like the Michael Jordan of strains. Also, I noticed that it's not usually included in most multiple probiotics. The reason I brought it up to you is because I see lots of people with SIBO saying, it's gone!!! and if you see anyone talking about stomach upset, it's usually ones that contain MOS giving upset. This is MOS and if you look at the 3rd paragraph you'll see it stated there.

Sorry to hear you are experiencing this, I know it can be extremely frustrating. Two things that I found helpful were Boric Adid suppositories and probiotics. I linked to the ones that I used but there are so many other options out there for these products. I am not a fan of consistent use of antibiotics because eventually our bodies can develop resistance to them, so please be careful with them.

Boric Acid

You put the suppository in your vagina (usually at night) and symptoms cease sometimes within a day, but you should experience improvements within a couple of days. No odor, no itching, etc. I have heard of women who use these and their BV/yeast problems stop permanently. My period really messes with my ph balance, so I usually use them the last couple days of my period and then will use one if I ever have any symptoms come back. I experienced recurring BV since puberty, about 10 years, and this is the one thing that has brought instant, consistent relief without other negative side effects. I have heard of some people not having as much success, or even their own negative side effects, so I would look into that as well for you to balance the potential risk vs, potential benefit. Some literature on this method: 1, 2, 3.

Probiotics

Before using the Boric Acid, I used probiotics and found them to be very helpful but not as comprehensive as the BA suppositories. Within a week, many of my symptoms would cease, including any odor or itching (a very rare symptom for me), however my discharge would still seem a little off.

Before making another trip to the doctor, I would strongly suggest purchasing one of these! I also will second looking into what you are eating and how it might be impacting you. Wishing you luck!

Hmm. Well the only advice I can give, outside of another doctors apt for a second opinion, is what's worked for me for reoccurring bv. I started taking 800 mcg Folic Acid and a probiotic vaginal supplement.

The probiotic can be found at Walgreens and other such places. There are also vaginal probiotics that require refrigeration which also work. I stopped with this eventually because I can't get it where I currently live but kept up with the folic acid and still haven't had an issue since.

Try giving these a shot once. I use to to be the same way with taking a lot of pills. I take 1 of these before i have dairy and im good to go for quite a bit. I can eat a whole pint of ice cream or a large pizza on just 1 pill. You sometimes might have to take 2 depending on how much dairy but its pretty easy to judge and obviously varies for everyone. I found these about 6 years ago and they have been very consistent. You can find them cheaper in most local stores rather than amazon.

Hey, I'm extremely lactose intolerant so feel free to ask me any questions. Having a stomach ache within 20 minutes of diarrhea seems pretty reasonable. And typically if your diarrhea is extremely watery and runny its typically from the milk. I think as soon as your body realizes it can't digest the lactose it begins to just dump it from your system.

I'm sorry you're going through this, OP. I have terrible constipation as well and the bloating is one of the worst symptoms for me. It's such an uncomfortable feeling. I'm by no means cured, but I've tried several things that have really helped. Especially with my bloating. I recommend looking into these.

NOW Probiotic: This is one of the best probiotics in my opinion and is a must if you have IBS. I take one capsule 30 minutes before eating and it helps reduce my stomach pan and improves my digestion. This is one of the things that has made the most difference.

Chamomile: I take this after I finish eating. It settles down my stomach and reduces the likelihood of me experiencing stomach pain after eating. I take it not just after eating, but also whenever my stomach acts up. It almost always relieves any sort of stomach discomfort I'm experiencing. Chamomile is particularly good for improving digestion, reducing gas and bloating, and promoting smoother and more frequent bowel movements. If you experience any anxiety, which is pretty common among people with IBS, chamomile can really help with that as well. It's a mild sedative and is very calming. It's useful for lowering anxiety as well as improving sleep issues like insomnia.

High Absorption Magnesium: Most people have some level of magnesium deficinecy. People often don't eat foods that are high in magnesium and to make matters worse, things like sugar, caffeine, and certain medications, can lower your magnesium levels. Magnesium is a very important mineral and getting enough magnesium can help you feel less constipated and help you have smoother bowel movements. It's also good for lowering anxiety as well.

NOW Candida Support: It's believed that some some people with IBS may have candida overgrowth. CO can contribute to IBS symptoms. This supplement does a good job of managing this. I take 2 capsules with a meal.

Senna: Senna is a mild, but effective herbal laxative. I take one capsule 2 to 3 times a day and I've been having bowel movements a lot more often and I'm not as constipated. My doctor had me on Miralax previously, but I switched to senna because Miralax was too strong and harsh. It would help me poop, but I would poop too much. So much that it was even painful. Senna is far less harsh.

Triphala: I take triphala right before bed and I'm usually able to have a bowel movement once I wake up the next morning. It helps the liver and kidneys do a better job of detoxifying the body. It may help kill certain bacteria that could be contributing to your IBS. It seems to work because I noticed that all my acne cleared up and my skin looked so much smoother when I started taking triphala.

Besides these supplements, a diet change can lower the chance of your IBS symptoms triggering. I personally like a gluten-free diet because it's not as strict and difficult to follow as some other IBS diets. Gluten is one of my biggest bloating triggers and avoiding it when I can really helps.

u/womeninlove · 1 pointr/AskDoctorSmeeee

This has made me fearful of taking any other probiotics, but I'm realizing now that the reaction indicates that something's out of balance that will likely need to be addressed for my health to return.

As a fairly recent probiotic convert, I think they're a major facet of health that people neglect.

iLLyNoiZe has a solid bit of info. I'd also recommend reading the strains within certain probiotics. The approach here is that you can find what in particular you need. Specific strains have specific things they target, and getting a feel for these can help you troubleshoot any problems (or possibly narrow things down if you need to switch brands for any reason). This is more of a longer-term recommendation, of course! Good to make note of stuff that works, I figure.

Hopefully I can answer your questions! Berliner Weisse is one of my favorite styles. MTF is a great resource, so definitely check that out.

  1. Use a good calculator to figure out how big of a yeast starter you need. There are plenty of guides online. You shouldn't need a starter for your bacteria if the pack isn't old. If you can't get your hands on OYL-605, you can use GoodBelly Probiotics, which you can find at most health stores or even Whole Foods. The mango kind will impart the least amount of flavor to the beer. 8-10 oz per 5 gal of beer is enough. You can also use Probiotic pills to sour. Again, no starter necessary, just pull apart a few pills (4-5 is plenty) and dump the powder into the fermenter. Whatever you use, I recommend that it contains L. plantarum.

  2. You can buy lactic or phosphoric acid from a homebrew store and a calculator like Bru'n water to figure that out. However, I never bother with this step. Sours usually have terrible head retention, and I don't mind it.

  3. The last few times I've made a Berliner, I just sour for 24-48 hours in my fermenter, then pitch yeast. As long as you pitch a healthy bacteria starter, you shouldn't have to worry about pathogenic aerobic bacteria joining the party.

  4. Yes, that is kettle souring. I don't because I'm lazy and have separate cold-side equipment for my sours. The advantage of this technique is that you don't need to worry about the bacteria getting onto your equipment and infecting clean beers. Someone who runs a production brewery or a brewpub would be more concerned with this, since they are likely using the same fermentation, lines, and kegging equipment for all their beers.

Make a starter with 5 capsules. Ideal lacto pitching rates are 100-125 billion cells per 5 gallons.

u/ApolloMac · 1 pointr/Homebrewing

I'm about 3 weeks into fermentation of my first kettle sour attempt. I used Swanson L. Plantarum capsules, 10 of them, rather than goodbelly. They worked really well, as I was down to 3.5 pH after about 16 hours @ 95F (I had pre-soured to 4.5 with lactic acid). https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00BZ3YWXC/

Depending on your culture of lacto, I have heard it can take as much as 72 hours, especially if you are trying to go really low with the pH. But going beyond 3 days is sketchy IMO. I'm just learning the kettle sour process myself but I wouldn't want to leave my wort more than 1-2 days before boiling and pitching yeast.

My guess is your goodbelly shots did not have enough lacto in them, so it was just a really slow start. Pitching more next time would probably be safe. The capsules worked great though, if you want another method to try. I don't know if the flavors are different between the capsules and goodbelly, they might be, but the simplicity was key for me. I would guess any differences are minimal.

By the way, make sure to keep your lacto no hotter than 100. It can actually do just fine in the 80s or even at room temp. The quickest pH drop supposedly happens right around 95 though. Oh man I have so many questions I'd like to ask you but I'll keep it limited:

  • Could you tell me what you think about probiotics needing to be shipped in ice packs, and kept refriderated?
  • What are your thoughts on this brand (pro-15), and its delivery method being so effective that it only needs a 5 billion count? It has been working wonderfully to for me which is all that matters I suppose.
  • I'm obsessed with having perfect bowels since I have had symptoms of IBS in the past. I believe that a probiotic, well timed fiber (metamucil), and glutamine have been my fix. Fiber used to not work very well for me, but now that I take it with dinner, or right after, instead of right before bed, it works extremely well. Is there any reason why timing might matter so much with fiber? Also I lift weights so I eat a lot of food. Every morning i have a perfect but huge and long bowel that requires zero wiping, and then 20 minutes later I have another nearly perfect bowel but requires wiping. (I also have one more bowel at night) I picture my body only able to fuse so much poop in the chamber so it hast to leave a bit of a mess "on deck", and then once the main chamber empties, the other poop "on deck" comes down and doesn't have time to solidify as much. Is this how the body works? I'm wondering if there is a way to only have one bowel in the morning instead of 2?
u/brainjacked · 1 pointr/StackAdvice

A regiment of apple cider vinegar twice a day, Pro15 probiotic and CandidaFX helped me with Candida.

As for your stack, optimal cognitive function is complex and depends on the right balance of various neurotransmitters. Increasing activity in 1 system (e.g. dopaminergic) allows you to influence the balance towards that system and any benefits that might have e.g...

  • Increasing cholinergic activity, in my experience, improves deep thought, decision making and patience but hinders my ability to focus and immediate motivation.
  • Increasing dopaminergic activity improves energy, motivation and focus but decisions are made faster (less thought out), I lose time over-focusing on unimportant things and it makes me very impatient and irritable.

In your stack you are increasing activity in all the brain's major systems, which in my experience results in monkey mind/scatterbrain, not superbrain. Everybody's brain chemistry is different. To start, perhaps you should try focusing on each system, 1 by 1, to get to know YOUR brain and how you respond, what supplements/dosages are most effective, etc instead of trying to guess based on what you read on here from quackdocs like me.

When I started taking probiotics, I was attempting to combat what I was convinced was a yeast overgrowth. So I used one that had 50 billion colonies. I bought it at Whole Foods, and I think the brand was "every day value 365".

After a month and a half, when my rash went away, I downgraded and now take this one, which is only 5 billion colonies.

Here's a decent Wikipedia about intestinal flora: http://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Intestinal_flora

Then there's this about gut bacteria and weight:
http://www.scientificamerican.com/article/how-gut-bacteria-help-make-us-fat-and-thin/

For many reasons, probiotics can be a good idea. Without treading into "giving medical advice on the Internet" I will say this:

In children, we see significant GI issues in these cases almost always: after antibiotics, with poor diet, poverty, obesity, parental/sibling obesity and more. When I say "significant GI issues" I mean the kind of back-up and constipation that is noted as severe on X-ray.

Emphasis: this is even in the presence of a daily bowel movement & 99% of the time the child/parent has absolutely no idea.

I take these: http://www.amazon.com/PRO-15-Recommended-Supplement-Technology-Probiotics/dp/B00JEKYNZA

I have no relationship with the product, it's just what we're taking right now.

u/nutrop · 1 pointr/Probiotics

I finally checked out your site. I had no idea there were supposed to be side effects when taking probiotics. I never had sides when I took a multi-strain probiotic:

http://www.amazon.com/PRO-15-Recommended-Supplement-Technology-Probiotics/dp/B00JEKYNZA/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1421680904&sr=8-1&keywords=probiotic

I think it was because it was a time-release probiotic.

u/WithLinesOfInk · 1 pointr/femalefashionadvice

I think the probiotics are the most important aspect, but I like doing the yogurt too because it's good for me and there's a chance of getting even more active cultures into your system. It seems the whole "eating yogurt keeps your vagina healthy" thing has been debunked, though. But definitely do your research. Typically, the cheaper the probiotics, the less effective they are- you want a probiotic that is verified to work (quality assurance from FDA and FAO on supplements isn't very heavily enforced) and has more that 4 strains.

Bio K worked the best for me, but they're stupid expensive.

We just finished a bottle of this which I liked pretty well.

Here are some of the most common/helpful strains to look for:

  • Bifidobacterium lactis HN019. This strain helps modulate some aspects of the immune system in older people (it's sold as an ingredient for dairy and supplement products).
Lactobacillus reuteri ATCC55730 (available in BioGaia Gut Health * products).
  • Lactobacillus rhamnosus GG (LGG) (in Danimals drinkable yogurt and Culturelle capsules).
  • Lactobacillus casei DN-114 001 (in DanActive products).
  • Bifidobacterium lactis Bb-12 (available in Yo-Plus yogurt, LiveActive cheese).

  • S. cerevisiae (S. boulardii) (found in Florastor powder and Lalflor capsules.
  • Lactobacillus rhamnosus GG (LGG) (in Danimals drinkable yogurt and Culturelle capsules).
  • Lactobacillus casei DN-114 001 (in DanActive products).
  • Lactobacillus acidophilus CL1285 plus Lactobicillus casei Lbc80r (available as BioK + CL1285 fermented milk, BioK + CL1285 soy milk, and capsules).
u/jander99 · 1 pointr/soylent

Grab some of this too. Make sure your entire GI track is taken care of. http://www.amazon.com/PRO-15-Recommended-Probiotic-Supplement-Technology/dp/B00JEKYNZA

Question: Have you been approved to do this by your doctor? Not that I want to discourage you in any way, just wanting to provide that check that you no issues with what might be a rapid change in metabolism.

Incoming OT tangent: There is a large body of medical research showing the positive effects of micro-nutrient and gut-flora supplementation. In fact, it's been going mainstream for a while now, and no longer something reserved for alternative-medicine junkies. Just talk to any nutritionist; hell, every single one of my friends who are into athletic training / lifting weights takes a full suite of supplements.

If there is a single supplement I would recommend to the uninitiated, it would absolutely be probiotics! If you've never tried a probiotic supplement before, I encourage you to dig into the massive body of medical research regarding the importance of gut health! I challenge you to try a probiotic supplement for 30 days and see for yourself! You will wonder how you ever lived without it! :)

u/allergicaddiction · 1 pointr/Accutane

Hi, I also ended accutane early due to similar side effects (not hair thinning, though).

I want to tell you that it isn't the end of the world and that you should now seek alternative and healthier ways to fight acne. I haven't been on accutane in over three months and my big cystic acne has also stopped forming on my face about 2 months ago.

Here are some things I researched and arrived upon:

/r/skincareaddiction - great subreddit for skincare. Please do yourself a favor and subscribe and start with their basic skincare routine on the side or ask for help.

probiotics - our gut flora has a lot to do with our mental health and our skin. Here is one that a redditor found to help with cystic acne: https://smile.amazon.com/gp/product/B00JEKYNZA/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o01_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

Evening Primrose Oil also helps and these pills can be found on Amazon.

Drink plenty of water, lots of green tea (reduces free radicals)

Avoid dairy. So no chocolate, cream, cheese, milk, ice cream,

I feel like some acne can't be stopped since the cysts are just too big and too aggressive. I suggest you pick a mild and gentle skincare routine and follow it until your face can handle more. DO NOT NUKE YOUR FACE SINCE YOU ARE COMING OFF OF ACCUTANE.

Good luck and know that there are other ways to combat acne. If you say it wasn't too bad before, then I'm sure you'll find that these healthier ways work for you.

That's interesting, luckily probiotics are in a few of my favorite food items too. But It's one I found on Amazon, the reviews were pretty good so I thought I'd try it to add to my diet.

I figured my options were limited to surgery. I have not ruled out the possibility of having another child. But he says that I should still be able to after surgery. Obviously it's possible that's not true. But surgery always has risks. That being said I have decided I will have surgery, when I can afford it. I tried the IUD some years back which seemed to work at the time but my last gyn didn't want to do it and my specialist only does surgery. So waiting it is! He did tell me I should get a colonoscopy though. But i've seen pictures where women had adhesions and tissue on their diaphrams, colons, bladders....this is an ugly disease. Thank you for your suggestions and input!

u/PapaDisc · 1 pointr/Candida

Another thing you can try adding to your treatment:

You WILL need probiotics to help replace the bad stuff.

Most of what are called pre-biotics these days are plant based short chained fatty-acids (SCFA) which doesn't feed the bad stuff, but can be fermented by the good stuff. This starves the bad bacteria and feeds the good bacteria. These work Ok.

There is a new class of prebiotic, which is a macrophage. This is a hunter-killer macrophage white cell which targets Candida and the bad bacteria, but which do not harm the good bacteria. The idea is that if you kill off the bad stuff, the good stuff will be better able to be thrive. So, this will help kill the Candida, Clostridia, et al but won't harm the good stuff like traditional antibiotics and antifungal meds.

I have no connection with this company other than a satisfied customer, but I haven't had time to see who else are selling these macrophage prebiotics.

Prebiotics: This does not contain probiotics, but will target the bad germs in your gut:

It is safe and healthy. If GABAergics help you then it will as well. Personally I think Ashwagandha is a better supplement overall because it is an adaoptogen.

My recommendation regarding lithium orotate was not that you should stop. I said you should only use it with medical supervision. To be clearer (as I realize I was not) - get a blood test to determine your lithium levels. Even if you don't currently have side effects from it, it would be very prudent.

That being said, if you have good reason to believe your issues are caused by nerve damage, then raising nerve growth factor would make sense.

Most cost effective way to do this is with near-infrared light therapy.

My doc didn't make a specific recommendation, but I'm using one that's got several strains in it as opposed to a single strain one (i.e. one that is exclusively L. acidophilus). I ordered this one: [Check this out: NewRhythm Probiotics 50 Billion CFU 20 Strains, 60 Veggie Caps...] (https://smile.amazon.com/dp/B071DZQLPQ/ref=cm_sw_r_sms_awdo_t1_kVPKAb3326AHE) because it contains a good variety including several types of Bifidobacteria, which KellyMom says is useful for preventing thrush.

u/ctrl_alt_delimeat · 1 pointr/keto

Not that these can cure it, but they may help symptoms till you can get a game plan or find a good doctor to help. Hopefully adding good bacteria with probiotics can take up more real estate then the bad guys and feeding the good bacteria with a prebiotic soluble fiber like psyllium husk can help them thrive. Cutting out the sugar should hinder the bad bacteria food source. Just something to try for cheap till you can figure some fix out.

If your gut health isn't as good as it should be you can have some negative side effects such as bloating and gas. As your body adjusts to the bacteria, you should see an ease in those negative symptoms. I would recommend trying to get pre and probiotics from a range of foods as well as trying a probiotic. Fermented foods such as sauerkraut and kimchi have a plethora of beneficial bacteria. With yogurt, make sure that the brand is low in sugar. Sugar feeds the unhealthy stuff, like candida further causing digestive discomfort.

Hi,

Sorry about that. One of the best remedies that will provide relief from bloating and I would advise you to try are probiotics. These are good bacteria that can help digestion and metabolism, hence providing relief from bloating, constipation, diarrhea, nausea and almost anything related to digestion. In fact, probiotics balance gut flora and help to fight bad bacteria that make us sick. As a result, boosting our immune system. When it comes to taking probiotics, you can either include them in your diet by eating some yogurts or kefir. Or, you may also take probiotic supplements which are richer in the good bacteria. I can recommend Flourish Probiotics by Eu Natural. ( https://www.amazon.com/Flourish-Probiotics-Women-Lactobacillus-Saccharomyces/dp/B07KFPCCLP )

I've tried almost every probiotic I could get my hands on and to be honest, the only one that has actually helped were the ones that are refrigerated made by Garden of Life RAW. I have been using RAW Probiotics Ultimate Care by Garden of Life for about a year or so and it drastically improved my IBS and I know this is gross but I rarely have diarrhea anymore. Here's the Amazon Smile link. The only problem is because it needs to be kept refrigerated, I buy mine from a local health food/supplement store and it costs about $53 for a 30 day supply. Buying it online seems to be much cheaper but the problem is that you have to pay for overnight shipping and an ice pack so it actually ends up being about $55-65 depending on which vitamin website you check out. I've looked all over and can't find it anywhere cheaper than just getting it from my local store and that way I know it was kept cold so the good bacteria stay alive. I actually found a test that anyone can do on any probiotic to see if it works or not, and it's a great test because it shows how many probiotics are out there that claim to be great and really don't do anything and are a complete waste of money. From what I've learned, avoid any probiotics that aren't refrigerated. If buying a probiotic, chances are you will need to avoid Walmart and local grocery stores and go to an actual health food and supplement shop and check in their refrigerated section. I tried almost every "probiotic" sold at Walmart, Target, CVS, Walgreens, and my local grocery stores and none of them did anything. It was a huge waste of time and money. So going to your local vitamin/supplement shop and finding their refrigerated section is usually the best way to go unless you like wasting money.

Here are the links that show you how to test your own probiotics at home to see if you're wasting your money or taking a good product...

Just take a probiotic! They're inexpensive and way more effective than eating yogurt/ fermented foods alone. (You should still eat those foods and avoid heavily processed and sugary foods though!)

I don't see this mentioned often enough, but I recommend taking a daily probiotic. I recommend this one. You can find many studies linking gastrointestinal health to mental health, and they did wonders for my anxiety.

u/youaretherevolution · -2 pointsr/Fitness

The growth hormones and high does of antibiotics that are fed to cows scare the crap out of me. If you're going to eat yogurt, I would make sure it's organic to protect yourself. Oh and do try to eat plain yogurt with as little sugar as possible, like everyone else said.

Personally, I stay away from dairy, so here is how I get the same nutrients:

Yogurt contains cultures of healthy bacteria (called probiotics) which your body does not produce on its own. This bacteria helps your digestive track break food down, among other things. You can gain the same benefit from taking a probiotic supplement. I take this one because it is the most potent. Pay attention to how many billion bacteria are in each pill when you are comparing prices. FYI - If you ever take an antibiotic, it kills a lot of that good bacteria in your gut while it's killing the bad stuff, so make sure you take a probiotic supplement then especially.

As far as protein, there are other, more complete ways for you to get protein. I recommend quinoa which is a grain-like crop that tastes like a nutty rice. The reason why quinoa should be a staple of your diet is it contains a complete set of the 8 amino acids your body needs (and again, does not produce). Not all proteins have this distinction.

Here's a good recipe for quinoa.

If you have any other questions about yogurt, let me know.
