I don't have a flamethrower, but I do have one of these propane flame torches for weed control.

For comparison, the big burners on a high-end domestic gas stovetop put out about 20,000 BTU/hr, the commercial ranges used in Chinese restaurants for heating woks put out 80-100,000 BTU/hr, and turkey fryer bases put out 50-180,000 BTU/hr.

The "Mr Heater" flame torch (love the name), on the other hand, puts out 500,000 BTU/hr.

Even so, it is surprisingly ineffective for melting ice and snow. In my mind, I would sort of wave it at a pile of snow and watch with satisfaction as it melted instantly, or even vaporized. In practice - nothing of the sort. You point it at some snow, and you wait .. and wait ... and wait ... and eventually it begins to melt.

So, sadly, I don't think a flamethrower is the answer.

Go to your hardware store and get one of these.

It's a much more sturdy, more powerful and more versatile thing than those butane kitchen torches.

Still perfectly safe to use (provided you're not an idiot) and safe for food.

Buy a blow torch. Its cheaper and lights BBQ charcoal in a few seconds.

I bought a cabinet fan that has a regular AC plug. This is the one. I guess it's not specifically a CPU fan, just a cabinet fan meant for any sort of small DIY projects.

The torch is a Bernzomatic Powercell w/ self-starting trigger meant for soldering and brazing. You can also order it from Amazon here.

Looks like a torch igniter that's missing the flint section. Used to light oxy-acetylene welding and cutting torches.

But maybe an older style?

Only need 2 bricks. and the burner is very affordable, albeit a little unsuitable. its the cheapest way to accomplish what he's trying to do. its like the definition of hobbyist tools.

Oh, that's not so bad. From your post, I was expecting 4 yr old tree saplings! You could run a lawnmower over that and it will be 90% improved.

Don't worry yourself about getting your strategy right the first time. You can try a couple different things, and go at it again if the previous failed.

These would each work:

  • pour boiling water on the weeds, which will kill them
  • get a weed-killing flame wand
  • kill and remove the weeds with a pass-thru hoe
  • pull by hand (labor intensive, but can be relaxing)

Don't worry about "kill or pull first". Even if it's a perennial with a gigantic root system, it can only survive losing its top a couple times before it dies completely, so feel free to just keep pulling the tops off.

You'll have to return a couple times a year to kill new weeds, this is a regular maintenance item. New seeds will germinate, and the roots will grow in mulch just like dirt.

Personally, I've never had much success with weed mats. New weed seeds will blow in from the wind, and they will germinate in the mulch you put on top of the mat. But to answer your question, no, you don't have to put it down the same day or week or month.

I don't see much weeds worth identifying in your photos.

That's my quick recommendation, those will be enough to get you into trouble.

Uh, looking at some quick google searches it looks like I have this torch and a Worthington 4.25 pound LP cylinder.

u/Structure_Number_3 · 2 pointsr/Benchjewelers

I use this torch. I use it for silver but I do rather large pieces and have never had trouble getting it hot enough. The opposite actually lol I have to be careful not to melt the whole thing!

I have a similar setup from Goss I went without the self igniters to keep the torch Handel small but over the standard on the tank torch these are a joy to use.

I use this one and am also a beginner :) Been very happy with it, as my last one was very under powered.
