  • An armchair pillow (camo print optional)

    If affordable and you can get it in time.

    He'll have to sleep on his back until his drains are out, about a week. I found that really uncomfortable unless I was propped into a half-seated position. An armchair pillow was a godsend, plus it's still really comfortable and I use it regularly.

  • Wet wipes

    He also won't be able to shower until the drains are out. Seriously, they were the only thing that let me feel not totally gross. Maybe dry shampoo too if he has help and is comfortable letting someone else wash his hair, but otherwise it still requires raising his arms above his head.

  • Distractions

    Coming from a friend, I think I would have appreciated these the most. They feel celebratory as well as practical. And recovery is boring, housebound with limited mobility.

    Fill a USB stick with a bunch of movies and TV shows he has been wanting to watch. Or get him some old school paperback books, or a gift card for some games on Steam.
