No, Amazon did something weird. The [normal item page] (https://www.amazon.com/Super-NES-Classic/dp/B0721GGGS9/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1503492512&sr=8-1&keywords=snes+classic), which was the one everybody signed up to receive alerts about, was not the same as the one you were able to pre-order off of. Rumor was they did this to prevent bots from snapping them all up - but the real pre-order page just had a description of what the item was, with no image. It would show up if you searched for SNES classic, but under the original page, and it looked kinda sketchy.

It's a matter of opinion. I think that FTL looks pretty nice while Terraria looks like crap, yet I never grew up with games that looked like that.

BTW, it's not 8-bit graphics. This is 8-bit. Note how everything isn't really shaded. Now compare it to Terraria. 8-bit means there is a 256 colour scheme. Here is the total amount of colours you can achieve on an 8-bit console. While it may seem like a lot, it's not that much if you compare it to what we have today.

Pixel art is the correct term. Terraria and most other games are usually either 16-bit or 32-bit, meaning you can have a more diverse colour scheme.

Most indie games aren't 8-bit, they're usually 16-bit or higher. Of course, there are some that try to be/are 8-bit (Cave Story and VVVVVV comes to mind), and since "8-bit" is fairly easy to copy (quick to make and easy to animate, as the sprites are usually small).

So if you have a limited budget (which 99% of indie devs do), then you'll more likely to get out more content/polish things up if you didn't spend 50 hours doing sprites.

Bottom line is this: most indie games use pixel art, not "8-bit graphics". And whether or not you like it is all up to you, it's your opinion.

Sorry if this came off as ranty, I just find it annoying when somebody gets the two terms mixed up.

Mouse: Logictech G502. It is widely considered to be the "best" mouse for PC enthusiasts.

Keyboard: Will heavily depend on your preferences, but I have a DASKeyboard 4 Ultimate with Cherry MX Blues (tactile click). I have also heard nice things about the Corsair K70, and Strafe. If you are new to mechanical keyboards, I would recommend checking out the subreddit /r/mechanicalkeyboards for more information.

Headset: I just use an old set of Turtle Beach X12s I've had forever, because I usually just use my soundbar, but a buddy of mine prefers to use a desk mic and some Audio-Technica headphones.

EDIT: Saw your budget in the other comments. You should probably go with the Strafe for your keyboard. Most others below $100 aren't as high of quality. Personally, I think you should get the Strafe, the G502, and the headphones/mic combo.

I have a Hori game case that holds 24 of 'em. Amazon page here, though it's also available in other colors (I have an entirely translucent one).

Good quality, should last a long time if used properly (don't just push the cartridge in from the top, slide it in pushing against the inner tab. It has a slight amount of give to it to prevent breakage).

I also have one of those same cheap Chinese ones and you're right - the tabs on those break easily.

Get a Wii, 8-32GB SD card (and a reader for your computer if necessary), and Homebrew it instead, download a good ISO of Melee (no URLs here ^^^PM ^^^^me ^^^^if ^^^^you ^^^^^need ^^^^^^one ) or download the 20XX hack pack, purchase a couple of gamecube controllers, and get crackin'.


CRTs can be found on Craigslist. If it's boxy and has a fat back with a glass front, it's most likely a CRT. Search terms (listed from most to least relevant):

  ASK THE SELLER IF IT HAS COMPOSITE (RCA) INPUTS!! If you can't find someone selling a good sized one in your area for a good price, contact your local school district and ask if they have any working CRTs they're about to dispose. I've been lucky enough to find a few working CRTs sitting on the curb locally, about to be thrown away. Price should range from around $0 - $50, $50 being the absolute highest I'd pay (it better have the bonuses I listed or be a Sony PVM).
  
  A good CRT size to bring around is anywhere from 13"-21". Anything larger is too inconvenient to lug around to tournaments, and anything smaller is obviously hard for multiple people to see. Bonus points for:
  
  
• S-Video/Component input
  
• if it's branded as a Trinitron (generally considered to have higher visual quality compared to other CRTs, not guaranteed though)
  
• A/V out/passthrough
  
  CRT monitors (like old computer monitors) that accept VGA input are also possible and will garner you 480p progressive scan Melee, which is a significant step up from normal composite input. If you're willing to throw down a little extra money for a speaker and do some (optional) soldering work for high quality, lagless Melee, this may be the setup you want - see this thread by Kadano if you're interested. Note that this may make setting up at local tournaments slightly more hassle.
  
  You can buy a Wii, again, off of Craigslist, at your local pawn shop, or pay extra to get it from GameStop. I paid $45 for mine. I'm sure you can find one for less.
  
  SD(HC) cards are bought at your local electronics store for pretty cheap, somewhere in the $5-25 range. 4GB is enough to store Melee (around 1.4GB in size) and your required Homebrew files, but I recommend a larger SD card if you want more Gamecube or Wii games to fit on there, as opposed to using a flash drive or hard drive + USB Loader. SD cards load games a little faster and don't require weird formatting. Make sure it comes complete - that means a power brick, A/V cords, sensor bar, and Wiimote. If a deal looks too good to be true, that probably means it's the wrong type of Wii and doesn't have GameCube controller ports.
  
  You can order smash-branded GameCube controllers from Nintendo, Amazon, Best Buy, GameStop, or any other major online retailer for around $30.
  
  Sometimes you get a bad egg of a smash-branded controller and they have stiff triggers, or you don't like having to break in a new stick. That's fine, you can search for OG Nintendo GameCube controllers on Craigslist or at local thrift shops. You can take a chance on eBay or Amazon, but I'd recommend testing them out in person before purchasing - used condition is certainly a caveat emptor sort of deal. If you like the stick + buttons but hate the triggers, get some triwing screwdrivers, unscrew the new controller, and slap some broken in OG GameCube triggers in. Triwings are a very good tool to own to maintain controllers in general, so you can take them apart and clean/troubleshoot them.

1. Versatility. Sometimes Melee isn't the only GameCube game you want to play! Sometimes people ask for Project M! Sometimes finding and paying for now-rare, non-scratched disks is a pain in the ass! Homebrewing and loading ISOs via SD/USB ensures you have a bit-perfect copy of the game, ready to play.
   
2. Cost. Wii + SD Card is most likely cheaper than a GameCube + working copy of Melee and gets you that much more mileage.
   
   
   TL;DR: Buy a Wii and an SD Card, hack it, download Melee, scavenger hunt for CRTs and controllers, and you're golden.

For the majority of people, Wi-Fi is good enough, even if they might be in a situation that Ethernet would be easy enough to set up. Really, it's just a design decision. Less stuff in the system, less to pay for, and cheaper to produce. It helps that most people would use Wi-Fi anyway.

As for using Ethernet, you'll want a USB Ethernet adapter. Just about any of them work, provided they don't require an extra driver to be installed. I've been using this one for a few months now without issue. Good and fast too. Once you've got one, go to your system settings and change to a wired connection.

Melee is 15 years old and is currently growing faster than ever before. This isn't even a best case scenario for a video game; this is simply unprecedented.

Because of this and myriad other reasons, melee's community has become about *keeping kosher*, for lack of a better phrase. While new tech comes and goes as the meta changes, it's still been the exact same software played on the exact same hardware for 15 years. The most diversity I've ever seen at a tourney is a Gamecube disk being played on a Wii and that's about it. Even the new Smash-branded controllers that Nintendo released have been scrutinized for making shield drops easier, and this was Nintendo's best attempt at a replica of the original GC controller.

The tech skill entry barrier can only be described as unfortunate, but melee is a game that is set in its ways because every detail of it just works and nobody dares change an iota of it.

Amazon. You don't have to get the original Nintendo GameCube controller, the Super Smash Bros 4 GameCube controller works just as fine as the original and you don't have to pay the inflated resale price of a used GameCube Controller. It costs roughly 30$ last time I checked.

Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker, Legend of Zelda: The Twilight Princess (pick one and play the other if you like it. Also TP was ported to Wii with motion controls, and the whole game was mirrored to accommodate for that. IMO the 'cube version is better. That said, Nintendo tried for a more realistic stylization and thus it hasn't aged nearly as well as WW)

Starfox Adventures (if you liked the Zelda games, def check this one out)

Starfox Assault (absolutely nothing like Starfox Adventures. But a good game nonetheless)

F-Zero GX

Super Monkey Ball 2 (don't bother with Monkey Ball 1, Monkey Ball 2 is just straight-up superior in every way)

Super Mario Sunshine (This classic has aged like fine wine. Graphics were good back then and still hold up today, thanks to its stylization)

Paper Mario: The Thousand Year Door (if you are only going to play one game make it this one. Absolutely fantastic unique and creative game, everything about it is perfect; years later and nostalgia still hits HARD for this one, so many memorable moments)

SSX Tricky, SSX 3, SSX On-Tour. (Pick one and play the others if you like it, they all have their own charm. Tricky is arcadey but entertaining. 3 has a more serious tone to it)

These are NOT GameCube controllers. They're Wii Classic Controllers in the shape of a GCN controller that plug into the bottom of a Wii Remote. The new GameCube controller is all black and has a Smash Bros. logo in the middle and will be released, alongside the adapter for the Wii U, later in the year.

Since they're technically wireless - a Wii Remote doesn't plug into the Wii/Wii U - there will be input lag unlike a real GCN controller, which will be wired.

Also, it doesn't have the C-Stick. You'll also notice that these "wired fight pads" have the L, R, ZL, ZR buttons like Classic Controllers instead of the L, R, and Z button placement of the real GCN controller.

The only value these will have is looking nice next to their respective Wii Remotes or playing Wii Virtual Console games.

Also, look into getting a 12 month subscription of Xbox Gold (or maybe 3 or 6 months depending on your financial situation). Right now Microsoft is giving away 2 games for gold subscribers a month. Right now we can download Assassin's Creed 2 for free. You can usually find a 12 month subscription for $35 if you scour the internet hard enough.

And not mods (well, you may be able to mod it depending on the model; some are easier than others), but if you sign up for bing rewards, you can earn free Microsoft points. I've cashed out over $100 since the start of the year. I pretty much don't have to buy games any more.

With the release of Smash 4, they reproduced the original Gamecube controllers. You can buy them at just about any retailer.

I also own this game case, and it came with a plastic clip shaped like a DS game that fits an SD card specifically for this purpose. It's kind of useless to me since my SD card is always in my 3DS (The one in the picture is a spare), but it's convenient for this case because I only have 17 physical games (So far).

I am a paraplegic and get the exact same pain with handhelds. Grips have been a lifesaver! I tried skull & co.'s kickstarter grip and a cheap rubber one off Amazon before sticking with Satisfye's Switch grip. I have big hands and it was the only one large enough to comfortably play with. Edit: They JUST launched all new products but I have their OG Switch grip.

I have other branded grips for my N3DS XL and Vita, but forget what they are (I think they're Japanese brands I found on Amazon), and they're comfortable and work great.

I suggest buying a handful off Amazon to try out and then keep the one that works. They're all made slightly differently so you wont really know until you have them in your "grip" :-) .

While the Xbox One controller is a great evolution to the 360 controller, the PS4 controller is a real revolution if you compare it with the DS3. It feels so great in your hand. The size is perfect and the buttons and the D-Pad are by far the best compared to any other controller. The new surface feels really good, especially with sweaty hands like mine. Even the triggers are now better than the ones on the Xbox One controller (despite the nice rumble feature).

There is only one thing where the Xbox One controller is still superior and that are those great new thumbsticks with the slip-proof rim. Background...my last handheld was a Gameboy Color. I have no experience with anything after the original DS. I've been completely out of the loop on the last decade of Nintendo handheld development, so I apologize in advance.


First:

So I'm in the market for a 3DS or an 3DS XL and was just curious if there was a major advantage between the two. I see that the XL has way better battery life and is obviously bigger. Is that it? I'd get a cheaper DS, but it seems like I wouldn't be able to play newer games like Pokemon X/Y.

Second:

I'm worried about that battery life on the XL as it is (quoted at 6.5 hours max) is this your experience as well for playing games on playable brightness and other battery saving options? What do you guys usually get when playing straight from charge to death?

Third:

I'm looking at portable charging options and I see that you can buy a USB cable and would really be interesting in buying a USB battery pack like this. So, would a solution like that work fine? I'm just concerned about getting voltages and amps correct because I know that can be an issue for certain things (I've known people to burn out their phones by using the wrong charger).


Fourth:

Would I be able to play ROMs? For example, would I be able to load up some of the original Pokemon games and play them on a 3DS? Would I have to "jailbreak" it or is it just not possible?

Lastly, any suggestions on good games? Right now I'm looking at Pokemon X/Y/Older, and Fire Emblem. I like some turn base strategy and RPG's but would be open to other suggestions of good games that people seem to like, but might slip though a "sort by popular" search on Amazon.

As most here will tell you, the wiki does a pretty bang up job of answering most of your questions as far as game recommendations goes. You can find it here.

The best games for the platform will all depend on personal preference, but a solid base is always the Vita's stellar exclusives. Gravity Rush, Persona 4 Golden, Danganronpa and most recently Severed are all notable titles you might want to check out.

Battery life on my Slim is pretty good, and you can squeeze more out of it if you turn off WiFi when you're not using it. There are also third party grip cases with built in batteries that can boost the battery life even further, and make the console even more comfortable to hold.

Multiplayer servers will be on a game by game basis, but I think they should all be up and running. You might just run into problems with games where their respective audience have moved onto greener pastures.

What you need to get started playing Melee:

1. A Nintendo Wii (in case you ever become interested in Project M) available for about $40+ various places on the internet. Try to get the white one as some of the black models does not have slots for Gamecube controllers. Make sure the Wii has the sensor bar, power cables, AV cables, at least 1 wiimote. You also need a Gamecube Memory card so you can save the game. Alternatively if Wii isn't your thing you could purchase a Gamecube bundle like this.
   
   
2. A Wired Official Nintendo Gamecube Controller (negates wireless interference at large tournaments) available from anywhere from about $10+ Used on eBay to about $40 new on Amazon. Let me stress again OFFICIAL Nintendo controller, third parties are generally shoddy and not worth the investment regardless of their price.
   
   
3. A copy of Super Smash Bros Melee, price normally fluctuates from $30-$60 depending on site and demand.
   
   
4. A CRT television. The big ol' chunky ones. These are the only kinds of TV that do not have input delay for Melee. You can find them for free on craigslist or can buy one at a garage sale or thrift store for $5-10 dollars. Make sure it has AV hookups and a remote or a built in button to switch the inputs. Remember to lift with your legs or get a friend to help cause they can be heavy (my main one is 42" and 300lbs).
   
   
5. A Smashboards Account. Everything Smash related can be found there. Character discussions, tourny info, ect...
   
   Extra suggestions:
   
   

• Find human opponents in your area ASAP. You'll probably lose and lose badly but you learn infinitely more than playing against CPUs. Finding good players who are willing to show you the ropes is key.

• Once you get a feel for all the characters choose the one you like best and stick to them as this will help you improve faster. This is the most current Melee tier list, which is basically a power ranking of characters. That said, do not take it too seriously, anyone in S or A tier is generally viable and even those below it are feasible if you put in the time and effort (just look to this subreddit's hero aMSa who consistently puts up amazing results with Yoshi)

Most people are saying things like cases and screen protectors, but there are a few practical things that I couldn't live without now that I have them.

• Wrist Strap: I love being able to actually hold on to my device and quickly get it out of my pocket. I've also read stories on this sub of someone trying to steal his 3DS OUT OF HIS HANDS and run away, but he had a strap so it didn't work.
  
  
• 3DS XL Charge Cradle: This may just be because I have a hard-on for docks and cradles. I have a car mount for my phone, one for my phone at home to charge, one for my 3DS, one for my Vita, for my PS4 controllers....you get the deal. I love being able to quickly drop something down and it charges. Cannot recommend enough.
  
  
• 3DS USB Charge Cable: You never know when you want to charge your device, and when traveling it is a godsend. This way you can use the power brick you brought with you for the same as USB charging your phone. That way your regular 3DS charger can be used in that dock I showed earlier...
  
  Also, the 3DS game card cases other people have put on here. Just any one will be fine, so you can put all the cases on a shelf but you have easy access to them later. I put my disc games in a binder for the same reason.

If you have a lot of devices and you can think of a couple of occasions to "need extra battery" for smart phones, tablets, or other devices, too, my suggestion would be to invest in a bigger USB external battery.

If you're playing Smash only, I would recommend buying the new Nintendo controller. They're literally just GameCube controllers. Solid, reliable, and made first party by Nintendo brand new. They work with the original GameCube and the new controller adapter for WiiU. I have a set of 4 of these myself and they've worked great. It also doesn't matter which color you get or if you get the US or Japanese versions. It all works the same. The only difference is the language on the box and on the back sticker.

I'm not sure how much longer they'll be manufacturing them considering DLC support for Smash 4 just ended, so I'd get a few of them now while they're cheap. Good luck!

Not sure what you mean by "high quality" but the new Sm4sh controllers will be fine for your level, since you indicated you are just starting. This is untrue, Nintendo released Gamecube controllers for both Smash 4 and Smash Ultimate. If you're specifically looking for an original GameCube controller, as in it was released during the GameCube era, then yes, I guess you'll want to look for the Nintendo GameCube text.

if you want to play on your computer, I'll recommend the most recent dolphin netplay build, that and complete instructions can be found here.

Of course, you will need a ROM of melee which you should definitely obtain legally and not through a download of it somewhere on the internet.

You will need a controller. I recommend looking at your nearest thrift store, or joining the facebook group for your local melee scene and asking if anyone would be willing to sell one to you. Or you can buy a new smash 4 controller.. Also you'll need an adapter to play on your computer, the mayflash 4 port is the best and cheapest option, but if you already have a wii u with gamecube adapter you can make that work too. Either way follow this guide to set it up. (make sure it's on wii u mode if you end up with the mayflash adapter)

All this being said, this is not the best way to play melee. The best way will always be to play on a wii or gamecube with a CRT TV (long story short, they have way less lag than HD TVs). If you really end up getting into melee you'll end up going this route eventually anyways, so for that I'd recomend agin your local scene for a gamecube/wii and a copy of melee, though copys of melee can be a bit expensive. For a CRT, check craigslist in your area, or just like streetcorners, you shouldn't have too much trouble finding one. Worst case, your local thrift store will probably only overcharge you a little for a decent CRT.

If you don't want to deal with buying a copy of melee. Then you can mod your wii to play a rom of melee. I recommend the 20xx hack pack that is made for melee training. It has a bunch of stuff you can learn to use, but you can also just play regular games on it, so it's good for everything outside of serious tournament use. Here's the official step by step guide for getting 20xx onto your wii.

Outside of that I think your best option is to see if there's any smash fests or tournaments going on around you and just go, hang out with people and play as much as you can.

Also, just some friendly advice, as great of a resource this reddit, or smashboards, or people in general can be, not everything everyone says is accurate, so do your research.

I used it at a small nvidia event thing before it was released, but using the final retail model. I didn't really like it too much, I found the screen was a bit too small for some decent gaming, it was heavier than I expected it to be, the controller doesn't feel like it'd be comfortable for long term use and I overall didn't really get the point of it, as without the use of a VPN and always having a strong 4G LTE connection, you can only use it in your house, you know, the place where your PC is, and it's not like you can stream it from your PC, play on shield, do other stuff on pc (such as another user), overall, there's much cheaper solutions to this, if you have a gameklip and a wireless xbox controller with the dongle and some software called splashtop.

Also, shield requires a minimum of a GTX 660, the DIY version works with anything, except it does only stream at 800x600 (stable) and it only works on games that have borderless windowed (or just windowed, if you can deal with start menus etc), but it's a solution if you only play a few games and have a smartphone.

TL;DR: Screen too small, bit too heavy, uncomfortable to use for long periods of time, cheaper alternative if you don't mind some setbacks

The 2DS is a 3DS model, so you can play 3DS games as well. If you are going to use an R4 card, you'll have to pay attention to firmware versions and what cards work with which ones.

I personally don't use an R4 card, I just grab a few DS or 3DS games every now and then when there's a good sale. It's not really worth the hassle for me, plus I like having access to the eShop.

You can also put all of your DS and 3DS games in a Hori case, which I found works really well.

Playstation vita, remote play. You need wifi and a PS4 to do it, but it has been reported to work at 160 miles away from the ps4..

If you have large hands the vita is very uncomfortable to hold. I wouldn't buy the trigger grips, I'd buy the Nyko power grip because it has a place to wrap your fingers around on the bottom. It's way more comfortable to hold now, just not as portable.

Unfortunately most sellers that are selling gamecube controllers are selling new ones for $100+ and used are $50-80 because they are in high demand and are currently not in production by Nintendo. Awesome! Like everyone else said, to play on console, you need:

• CRT TV (cheap, pretty easy to find; HD tv's have some display lag)
  
• Official GameCube controller (the new white or black ones are great; don't buy 3rd party, they feel cheap and won't last long)
  
• First-generation Wii w/ sensor bar and wiimote (only early ones have GameCube ports/compatibility)
  
• Melee disc, and Brawl disc for PM
  
• 2GB SD card for PM. A larger one will work if you're willing to mod your Wii.
  
  You can also emulate both games on Dolphin and play online with other people at Smash Ladder, as long as you have ISOs for the games and a GC controller->USB adapter. Adapters aren't very expensive (~$15) and netplay is a very good way of practicing with people if you don't have anyone around you.

Unfortunately not. E-drums can't be used on Xbox one until PDP's wired legacy adapter comes out his fall. And then it can only work with ION kits, or via the RB3 MIDI Pro adapter with kits that have MIDI out (won't work with USB out). Since your kit only has USB out, you may not be able to use it. (I heard about one way that involves running it through your computer, and then MIDI from your computer to the xbox, but that is impractical for most people.)

Based on this sub's recommendation, I bought an Alesis Nitro kit about 2 months ago for $300 on Amazon. It has MIDI out and is a terrific kit for that price. I can't recommend it enough. I've been using it with Rock Band 3, and can't wait to use it in RB4 when my adapter comes in.

I have my doubts that the one you linked would work. The PDP wired legacy adapter seems to be coming in and out of stock the last few weeks, so its not discontinued yet. Even then, the PDP adapter only works with 3 devices, the midi pro adapter, ion drums, and the rockband stage kit (do note that while the PDP adapter will hook up the stage kit to the xbox one, there is no coding in RB4 to use it at this time). So even if you could get one of the PDP adapters it would not work with your GH2 explorer.

It has to pass through the midi interface before it can pass through usb. For that you need the xbox one legacy adapter and xbox 360 midi adapter. (Xbox one legacy adapters were made and sold in short supply and they probably won't come back. If you don't already have one then you should try playing your kit on rock band 3. You can get custom drum songs there too.)

Then you have to set your kit's pads and cymbals to the correct midi notes (using the drum brain), which is how Rock Band knows what gem you're trying to hit. Those numbers are in the manual for the midi adapter

Wii Classic Controller (or the Classic Controller Pro, which I haven't used, but it looks more comfortable.) with one of these adapters. It plugs the classic controller directly in to USB, so no wiimote, bluetooth, glovePIE, etc is required. It even supports 2 controllers at once so you can co-op some Battletoads without having 2 adapters.

Grip handles? There were two models of the classic controller: the Classic Controller and the Classic Controller Pro. Those grips aren't detachable.

You'd be best off getting a charger with 4 USB ports like this and four 3DS USB cables. If you want it to be a little more like one cable, plug all the USB cords into the charger, and then either use electrical tape or some kind of sleeving to group the cables into one nice bundle. I do something similar for my computer peripherals (which are in a hub, 6ft from my PC), and personally, I just wrapped a band of electrical tape around the cables every 6 inches. It looks slightly ghetto, but it gets the job done.

I got the Hori 3DS game card case on Amazon. It's $9.99. It has slots for 24 game cards (one of which is really for an SD card) and holds both 3DS and DS game cards. Easiest thing to do would be to buy a wired 360 controller.

The game works perfectly with the 360 controller, no setup required.

If you go the wireless route you do need to purchase a wireless receiver. I bought a cheap knock-off receiver (was a lot cheaper than the official one) but windows doesn't automatically detect it as a 360 controller wireless receiver. You have to do the whole device manager dance to get the correct driver loaded. After that it worked perfectly. I imagine the official wireless receiver will be plug-and-play with windows 10.

The MIDI adapter came all sticky like it was covered in glue (despite being packaged as new), which seems common in the reviews which is a bit annoying, but since it came from the US( I'm in the UK) I couldn't be bothered returning it; works perfectly!

I got the hard case so I can carry it in my purse without having to worry about scratches and it'll hold a few games, stylus, AR cards and cable cord. Only complaint I've seen on videos is there's like a 1/2" wiggle room side to side, but don't think it'll beat up too much in my purse, or can modify it with a little strip of sponge/cushion.

I also got a case for 24 games because I don't like sorting through each game box, and a lot of used stuff I got from Game Stop came in a paper sleeve.

I got an extra power cord so I don't have to keep unplugging it from room to room, but would definitely recommend a USB cable, I'm probably going to get one of those as well, but was sold out when I went looking last week.

I've been using it for a while and I cannot stand playing the Vita without it. It feels flat and very unergonomic.

I absolutely love my vita! I originally got it for a Christmas present on black Friday last year and only wanted it for remote play. At first, I felt the remote play was horrible because the cramped controls.

The only negatives I've experienced are that you can't voice chat with friends while using remote play unless you have an amazing wireless headset connected to your PS4 and you need faster than 5 mbps internet to remote play away from home. Other than that I personally think the vita is worth purchasing for remote play if you can't always be on your TV and you don't want to disconnect it and move it all the time.

Your gaming life will change when taking a shit with remote play.

Seconding the glass screen protector. I got the same one and it's awesome. Fits fantastically. I bought the original version too for my fiancé's Vita and it likewise is a great fit. Slightly curved edges too so there's no rough border.

As for a case, I don't use one. I bought the Nyko grip with the built in extra battery and carry my Vita with it in a 10 inch padded tablet case so I don't need to carry the parts separately.

Exactly this. I've been conflicted for a while, like OP, but realized that while XBONE exclusives are okay now, PS4 is about to blow them out of the water with their future lineup. I'm also much more invested in platinum trophies than 1,000 Achievement Points (stupid, I know). The safest thing is a properly-sized resistor on the 5V rail. XBox One and XBox 360 Wired controllers work through USB with appropriate drivers straight from Microsoft.

This adapter with a Wii Classic Pro controller works well too (although Wii classics have gotten expensive.) Also works with this GC controller replica (and this one too.) Both of those are from reputable companies (Hori and PDP respectively.) There is a lot of demand for this stuff since Smash came out, so if this is your choice, I'd wait until after the holidays.


The XBox or DS3 controllers are better for modern games, but I absolutely stand by the Classic/Gamecube controllers for classic games and emulation.

The GamePad comes with the console and you must have one. No ifs, ands, or buts about it. The Pro Controller is optional. In multiplatform games it's generally really helpful because it's more comfortable than the GamePad. So, for example, the game Darksiders: Warmastered Edition - The GamePad has no added functionality. The screen just shows what the TV shows. The Pro Controller works just as well. However in games like ZombiU, the GamePad is used for inventory management and other things. The GamePad is the way to go in that case. The Pro Controller is really good but not useful in every case. For playing Wii games, you will need a Wii Remote and Nunchuk. The Wii U Pro Controller will not work for Wii Games. However, the Wii has its own Pro Controller. It works for many games. You can buy it here. The list of Wii games that support the Pro Controller can be found here.. (The Wikipedia page says Classic Controller, but the Classic Controller and the Pro Controller are the same. The Pro Controller is a more comfortable version of the Classic Controller.)

How does your computer run dolphin? If you haven't tried to run anything yet then you should do that to make sure that your computer is up to snuff for gamecube emulation.

The controller you want to use is this one right? If it is, all you need to do is connect the wiimote to your computer using something like glovepie, and then plug in and set it up that way. I dont use a mac, but this program looks like it would work.

yes. wii shop channel is fully functional on the wii mode. maybe you are unaware, but you can transfer any vc and wiiware titles from a wii console you may have. but if you mention buying a wiimote, then i would assume you dont have a wii.

My down/up aren't nearly as high on the console as they are on every other device in my household, but they're more than adequate.

I've done a tiny bit of research, and from what I understand, up/down speeds aren't super important in online gaming; ping is. I've pinged my Wii U a few times, and it's always within acceptable gaming parameters, with 0% packet loss. I can't say as much for the people I'm matched up with, though, and that, I assume, is the reason for the input lag I experience.

I have no idea how matchmaking works in the game, but the logical assumption, it being 2014 and all, is that location is taken into account when choosing who to match with whom. If that is, indeed, the case, then I'm just really unlucky and keep getting matched against people with high ping.

This is clearly an issue with either the console or the game, as every other online game I play has zero input lag. Either way, it's out of my hands, as is, for now, my controller.

EDIT: Just ran a couple more tests. Had the same ping with and without the LAN adapter, and actually had double the down speed (same up) without the LAN adapter.

Lesson learned: Avoid this LAN adapter.

I live in small town USA, which has very limited internet compared to a lot of the US (9mbps down/0.5mbps up), but use a LAN network adapter for my Wii U and rarely have issues during my matches in Splatoon or Smash 4 (the two Wii U games I primarily play online). The controllers are about $25-$30 each if you can find them at MSRP, so they're a good deal if you are in need of new controllers for your old systems.

As far as playing Smash with a Gamecube controller vs a non-Gamecube controller goes, it's largely preference. There is a HUGE competitive fight scene that has formed around SSB Melee (the Gamecube version) and SSB Brawl (the Wii version), and since both games support the Gamecube controllers, it is seen as the gold standard for any serious SSB player.

The advantage it originally added was being able to use the C-Stick for quick smash attacks, as well as conveniently placed buttons that allowed for quick and efficient access. This makes it a little better than the other controller offerings (and WAY better than the wiimote + nunchuck) for the more competitive players

For the casual player, the Gamepad and Pro Controller will work fine (and the right stick works like the C-stick) but anyone who plays Smash a lot and is used to the Gamecube controller will swear by nothing else.

Personally, I only use the Gamecube controller as I don't like using the 'diamond' button placement found on the Gamepad/Pro controller/3DS for smash.

tl;dr: Nintendo released the adapter and new controllers as a bit of fanservice for the more hardcore SSB players who heavily requested Gamecube controller functionality with the new game.

Xbox one is the most popular control choice, followed by gamecube. One thing I will say if you plan on getting a gamecube controller, buy an official controller! Anything unofficial has a very high chance of having wonky deadzones, and in general just isn't worth the risk.

I'd just get him a Smash 4 GC controller. Some prefer the older ones, but they are incredibly expensive to buy new, and there's really nothing wrong with the Smash 4 ones. Pretty much everyone who's buying a new controller these days will buy one of these, since they're the best bang for your buck and they work just fine.

This one is pretty much the best new controller you can get. The original gamecube controllers (ex.) are very hard to come by new, but if you know friends/family that has some gamecube controllers that aren't too beat up/work well, try to snag some up.

Short answer: No.

Long answer: Most 3rd party controllers being produced today or even from the GC's day are more often than not really junky, with the exception being the Hori controller line for GC. The Cirka line is especially bad, they may have identical molding but the build quality is way worse than a Nintendo first party controller. I've read lots of negative reviews for them from people who bought them for competitive and casual play and almost all said this controller was inoperable by the end of 2-3 weeks.

Curiously, why not opt for the Smash Bros GC controller? Even at full retail you'd spend $29.99, it would be a long term investment and you wouldn't have any button hiccups. Also used controllers are fairly inexpensive as long as you get loose ones, I'll leave some links for you to check out.

Fairly cheap, compared to modern controller prices at least, and supported out of the box by the devs. The octagon gate on the analog stick in particular is really great for throws. (Unfortunately I feel Brawlhalla tries to use the analog triggers as digital, but I fixed that by changing my dodge button to the x button personally, ymmv)

Typically no. Especially for larger tournies, wireless controllers pose as a logistical issue. You may be able to get away with one at a local with below 50 attendees, but once you go larger than that, you'll have a hard time finding TOs that'll allow them.

My brother and I got one of each, swapped the back plates, snipped the rumble, and replaced the triggers with old ones that aren't shit.

I was in a similar situation to you -- beginner looking to get competitive in melee -- and I also had two ancient controllers that had seen a lot of love. For a while I was using one, getting by, but then I tried a friend's new controller. Dash dancing was so much easier and more fluid.

Actually it's 90€... I've never in my life bought a second hand controller that I liked for any console (and I've bought maybe 15 overall), and with the recent spike in prices I can't see good second hand controllers being super cheap either.

But if you're fine with that then good for you I guess.

On 20xx vs normal Melee: it doesn't matter. 20xx has L-cancel lights and random music if you're interested.

On stage zoom: there might be something out there but you'll get used to the camera pretty quickly, it's fairly good and intuitive

On Xbox controller: other people have you advice on how to set it up but if you're ever planning on going to an actual tournament you'll want a real GameCube controller. To pick one up for Dolphin you can get an adapter here:

For the release of Super Smash 4 WiiU they released the adapter, and started reproducing the original GCN controllers, only with a different face plate with the Smash logo inside of saying "Nintendo". The wire is also like 8 feet instead of the 4ft the original had.

You don't have to mash F5 if you're hoping to find it online. Here are the things I did that allowed me to get one pre-ordered:

• Bookmarks - In my browser, I added 3 bookmarks leading directly to the product pages on Walmart.com, BestBuy.com and Amazon.com. Periodically, I'll check these links just in case I get lucky.
  
• Accounts - At each of those three retailers, I made sure my account was updated, accessible and had at least one current payment method ready to go. If I didn't have an account, I created one.
  
• Saved passwords - I use Chrome to save all my login passwords on my personal computers and the one I use at work. This allows me to log in (or stay logged in) for even faster access once the pre-order goes live.
  
• In stock alerts - I signed up over at NowInStock.net to get a notification via email for when the Classic SNES is available at any of the known retailers. As another measure, I also signed up for the in-stock alerts at the retailers themselves.
  
• Check Reddit - Periodically, I do a search for "classic snes" on reddit to see if someone might have reported a known pre-order launch date/time.
  
  When the Walmart pre-order came online, I got emails from Walmart and NowInStock at exactly 8:30pm (PST) when the pre-order launched and at about 8:45pm, I opened my computer, clicked on the Walmart bookmark and since I was already logged in, I added the item to my cart and ordered it with two clicks.
  
  Ideally, you just want to be as ready as you can before the pre-order goes live. The more time you spend logging into an account and/or typing in shipping & billing addresses and credit card numbers, the more chances you have of screwing something up or missing out entirely because the item sold out too fast or the site crashed.

It goes both ways. With this nifty little unit you can use any "real" electronic midi drumset as rockband drums.

If you want to get really out there, you can technically buy any electric drum kit and plug it in to this to play pro drums.

I used it for some time, and while my e-drum kit wasn't the best, the adapter worked great.

What came to mind is the MIDI-to-USB adapter used for the Rock Band 3 Pro real guitar. I'd imagine it requires some hacking and a custom driver or something but it seems to solve part of the problem.

I have good news for you.

I have one and for the price it's fucking awesome and let's you use your actual set. As for guitar, Les Paul from GH3 is the best but it's hard to find a good one for cheap. I'd recommend creeping on craigslist as sometimes people will sell them without the intention of screwing you over.

All you will need is a RB3 Midi Pro Adapter and a midi cable to go from your e-kit's midi-out to the adapter.

Rock band instruments are MIDI compatible. My irl band actually recorded a demo with a rockband drum kit.

I have both the original and the knock-off, and the original has all the cards rightside-up, and it has a removable clip for your sd card. The original is also considerably more durable, since my knock-off is on its last legs after a couple of desk-height falls.

I think you should at least give it a shot. As much as it can be frustrating because you don't have control over what other people do and they may take loot you want, etc., the game is also designed to be played in coop so there are a lot of cool things you will not experience if you only play solo, mainly in terms of the interactions and synergies between the different Vault Hunters' skills.

Like I said in a response below, the best way to do it is with friends but if that's not possible, be patient and consistently stay away from people who play like assholes (leave the game or kick them out of yours) and add nice people to your friend list in order to keep playing with them in the future. This has resulted in a lot of really satisfactory gameplay for me in BL2. Also, this subreddit can be a good resource to find cool people to play with.

Finally, as much as many people are ok with playing with you if you don't have a mic, it is something that really enhances the experience so maybe you could consider investing in one. You don't need to spend $100, there are more budget friendly options like this one or this one that some people will hate on but they work perfectly fine if you adjust your expectations to the amount of money you're spending and they will last if you treat them with care. Even this is an interesting option if you're on Xbox and I'm sure there's similar alternatives for other systems.

They're amazing. You can adjust the game and chat sound with the headset. The sound is so much better, especially for fps and adventure games. You hear every little detail and you can properly feel the tone of the game. You can also put the tv on mute and listen solely through the headset if you need silence in the house for some reason. The best part is that it's $40 so it's not hurting your pockets too much.

You should consider getting a grip! Two grips that might be good options:

The Nyko Power Grip is very comfortable and it has a battery in it that can double your Vita's battery life. I don't have one myself, but I've heard amazing things about it. Only caveat is it seems some of their batteries are poorly made so some unlucky people end up getting batteries that either don't work at all or stop working within a month. But it's supposedly really comfortable either way. It might be a bit bulky and take up a lot of space though. Hopefully other users can weigh in on it.

L2/R2 Grip is the one I use. I find it really comfortable, and I love that it comes with extra L2/R2 buttons. It might be an unnecessary luxury, depending on the games you play. It's been super helpful for me though, especially for ps1 ports that require the l2/r2 buttons. Megaman Legends is a game that used the l2/r2 buttons, and the vita port gets around this by mapping those buttons to the rear touch pad. It was a pain in the ass for me to reach around and hit those precise spots, but with this grip, it's no longer a problem.

Really easy. Tons of youtube tutorials on the subject too. Entire time takes about less than 10 minutes. Scariest part is after removing the back screws, prying the two pieces apart to get to the guts. After that it's two unplugs of ribbon cables, lifting battery, one more PH00 screw, lift board, remove sticks, install new sticks, then reverse process.

Swapped out all my ds4 sticks for Xbox one sticks, and waiting on 2 2000 mAh batteries from Hong Kong to replace the stock batteries. Gonna be sweet.

check with /r/ps4mods for any further advice. I switched mine to the OEM Xbox One sticks and love them. They have more grip and feel more sturdy/rigid than the ps4 sticks. I got mine off amazon HERE.

Getting the touchpad to work with Skyrim is actually really easy. You can use http://www.DS4Windows.com to remap the touchpad to various keyboard inputs. Then I used this mod to change the button mapping to where all of my favorites are on the Dpad with the left bumper as a modifier so you get all 8 favorites accessable. After that, you follow the direction on the mod you linked to allow the keyboard and controller to be usable at the same time. You can't use both mods at the same time because they both edit the same file so you'll need to take the first mod and edit its file with the directions on the second mods page.

What I ended up with is all 8 favorites on the Dpad and I bound the various swipes/actions on the touchpad to keyboard commands.

  Works perfectly! The only thing you really have to do is when you are rebinding keys in the DS4Windows program is make sure that the 'Scan Code' box is checked otherwise they don't work in the game for some reason. Also, when you are binding keyboard keys ingame to various mods, your controller still has to be off otherwise the game doesn't pick them up.
  
  The versatility of the touchpad alone makes the DS4 hands down waaaaay better than the XB1 controller. The only thing I'm missing now is a mod to change all the buttons in SkyUI to the PS4 buttons. The mod on the workshop unfortunately doesn't work anymore. That or a mod for the controller itself to change the buttons to Xbox buttons since I don't use my PS4 all that much.
  
  Also, I suggest modding your PS4 controller to use Xbox One thumbsticks. They are by far superior and it is actually really easy to do. Both controllers get their thumbsticks from the same manufacturer so they are interchangeable. Here are the thumbsticks I bought off Amazon. And here is a really awesome video showing you how easy it is to do.

Then took the controller apart and then it's just a matter of taking the sticks off and putting the Xbox Ones on! There's several guides on YouTube for how to take apart a ps4 controller and it's a pretty easy process, so if you want to give them a try you should have no trouble!

I've installed Xbox One thumbsticks on all my controllers and it has made a world of difference! They only take like ~6 min to install!

I would suggest getting a Wii. Not all models are backwards-compatible so make sure you get on that is. Here is a list of different Wii models, though I'm not sure if it'll help. Which game you want to play is completely up to you. Having a Wii gives you access to all of the games except 3DS/Wii U. I can't say for sure that this is the best option since I have no experience with emulating.

You probably want to use a Gamecube controller. A good controller either has "Nintendo Gamecube" written on it or has the Smash 4 logo on it. If you can find them in a local game or electronics store, great. If not I'd suggest amazon.

My second cousins came over to say with us a few times and they always wanted to play my GameCube—they were around 5 and 8 or something. I had already owned a Wii so I was okay with that. One day I come home from school and my Double Dash and Melee discs were broken, and the GameCube has jelly inside the disc reader. It was around 2007 or something.

I still cry every day.

Now I don't care who comes over, their kids are not allowed anywhere near my shit. I will set up the game for them, but if I'm not home, they are not allowed to touch my games. I keep them hidden in my bookshelf far away from the living room. I also make it clear that there will be no food anywhere near the gaming area—they are all afraid of me and I'd rather have it this way than risk having anything else of sentimental value destroyed by children with no regard for property and parents who think everything is easily replaceable.

Ugh I hate how I barely have any of the games I played as a child. Games really helped me through a sad childhood, and I really wish I could have known what sentimental value they had so that I took better care of them. This looks really cool. How does it play without a headtracker? Is it a necessity? And would the Logitech Extreme 3D Pro Joystick be good enough? I don't want to drop a lot of money on it. Also, can you still be decent without buying planes?

Yes, it is.

I use FaceTrackNoIR, and while I've had very mediocre results with the face tracking (mostly with regards to input lag), I've had great success with using its IR tracking module.

What I currently use:

• PS3Eye @ Amazon (I've ordered two from this page - both have been the 'good' version of the PS3Eye, though I have not actually removed the IR filter from either, and it works fine.)
  
• Visible Light Filter (Cut out and stack Red, Green, Blue)
  
• DIY IR LED Clip with SFH485P LEDs (I followed the 'serial' build with a 6.8ohm resistor)
  
  I cut my clip frame out on the CNC router I happen to have, but it is a simple enough shape there is no reason you couldn't cut it out by hand or even make something out of cardboard, as my prototypes were. DXFs are available here, if you happen to have access to one and want something fancy.
  
  I run the Eye at 640x480@75fps, but that is mostly out of habit - I've heard very good results can be had at 320x240, and higher FPS capture is almost always going to result in smoother response. I use the Accela curves for input smoothing straight from the PointTracker project page here. For movement curves, I'd share mine but I'm not really happy with them yet. Much playing around and personal preference there.
  
  I can run this with no problems with a window at my back. It can sometimes get a little wonky with direct sunlight coming straight through the window, but that really only happens first thing after sunrise - once the sunlight is indirect, no problems.
  
  All this being said, I don't actually use it in Star Citizen (until they provide TrackIR hooks), but I do use the hell out of it in War Thunder.

In general the Playstation Eye might be a good platform / camera to tinker around with. Maybe not the best in resolution. But it's drivers are broadly used by the hacking community, in multitouch setups for instance, as it's relatively cheap ($8.88 on amazon currently for a new one, < $2.00 for a used one) .

Also, it might be an solution just to attach a camera to the ocular of a conventional microscope.

If you like RPGs, you should get Chrono Trigger (DS). It is on sale on Amazon right now.

FF tactics is a great one, though it's far inferior to the PSX version.

I can also whole-heartedly recommend Golden Sun, though it's not as deep of an RPG, it's extremely fun. Etrian Odyssey is as hardcore as they come, so it may or may not be your cup of tea. You actually explore and draw your own dungeon maps in it, and the class combinations are nuts.

If you aren't a big fan of JRPGs, you probably won't like The World Ends With You but you'd be doing yourself a great disservice if you skipped it.

There's also Chrono Trigger, which, if you never played it, deserves a chance to be seen. It is definitely an old school JRPG though.

FF3 and FF4 are both great if you like that kind of thing, but if you're not into JRPGs, again, you probably won't enjoy them.

I really loved the most recent Dragon Quest, even though it is decidedly old school and very much a JRPG in the traditional format. But it does a lot of things well, and the class system is deep and rewarding.

Bioware made a Sonic RPG, though I haven't played it so I can't recommend it.

The Castlevania games are all awesome, but they're RPGs like Diablo is an RPG.

The DS version is the best one to get. Everything from the PS1 version with all the advantages of the SNES version in addition moving all of the menus to the second screen, a fresh translation, an automap, and run enabled by default. It's fucking excellent.

It's also extremely affordable.

Theres two things you can do. Download the ROM data or use Amazon.

Here is the Amazon listing for CT on the DS. I'm not giving a link for the ROM data, because CT is a game you should buy. But, you could theoretically use a R4 cartridge with the ROM data and a micro SD. Emulating the game works too.

But seriously: just buy the game.

There are ROMs of it everywhere, but it never made its way to the Nintendo e-Shop. There is a DS version readily available, and there's also an Android version available.

You need either a US 110v 3ds charger or you could buy a usb to 3ds cable to use in any country.

BTW one of my favorite accessories for the 3DS is a USB charger if you can get one. Don't have to lug around the extra charger if you already carry around a USB charger, and obviously you can charge it from any powered USB port (like a computer). This is an example.

Yea the Kindle has a rather tough screen and with tons of capacity. Coupled with the insane battery life and ease of charging it's really a no brainer. On sale they can go for like 50 bucks and everyone in the family gets books they like along with the essentials young ones won't really care about....but redundancy...

On the subject we have an Anker PowerPort 21w Solar Charger and Anker PowerCore 20100. These two items will charge the Kindle (paper white and fire variety), Nintendo DS, Galaxy 7 Edge, tablets etc. The PowerCore will charge the Galaxy 7 almost 6 times before needing recharged.

Anything by NewTrent (their products are also over on Amazon) and this cable. Been using this stuff for awhile and it works out great!

You can, but in my experience it's a bit of a hassle. I tried it on two computers, and the one that previously had motioninjoy installed on it just refused to work with the Toshiba bluetooth stack as explained here. The other one worked fine and I tried out some emulators. The controller GUI is very barebones, and I suspect the OP of the gbatemp thread has jumped ship as the current version has remained at 1.6 for some time now.

For me personally, I find the Wii Classic Controller Pro and PC adapter to be more comfortable and much more easily configured. No wireless, but I don't mind.

I prefer to use the cStick to execute an ASC on the first hit of an upSmash. What I do is:

1. tap the cStick up
   
2. position my thumb over the B button (or whatever you have set to special)
   
3. press B the moment you hear or see the attack deal damage/knockback to the opponent. Alternatively you could memorize the timing of the button press.

Well, how often do you both play it? Do you have lots of games? If you do, you'll need lots of hard drive space and the 4GB Xbox 360 won't cut it.

I'd recommend the 250GB Xbox 360 for $299. Plus, you get two free games from it if you don't already have Fable 3 and Halo: Reach. It's also WiFi ready out of the box so you won't have to buy that accessory.

I hung out at Best Buy for 3 hours on Black Friday and picked the 250 GB Xbox 360 for $199. It was a good deal and mine had stopped reading discs earlier that day. I doubt you'll get one for that cheap this close to Christmas, so you're probably looking at spending around $300 for one.

At least that comes out to be about $1 for every extra GB. Nintendo knows a thing or two about making cartridges, I don't see how they can justify the markup for what is basically a circuit board. I'm not hating on them, and like I said, I didn't realize that the cheaper one doesn't include NintendoLand. So, that was my fault. But the above example with the PS3 includes a game and 160GB more than the one that is only $50 less. I'm just not that impressed.

I caved and bought an ethernet cable and LAN adaptor for the Spongebob v Patrick Splatfest. Best $28.47 I've ever spent! I get additional value from it since I love playing MK8 online.

the Wii LAN Adapter and similar third-party USB peripherals are compatible with the Wii U. it's a USB LAN adapter with an Ethernet port. you plug the Ethernet cable into the adapter, plug the Adapter into the Wii U, plug the other end of the Ethernet cable into your router/modem/etc., set up Wired Connections on your Wii U options, and if everything works you should be good to go.

I tried the one from DHE and it only worked for about two weeks. Luckily, when I contacted them about it the response was quick and I was refunded the purchase without having to send the faulty unit back.

Yes. The best solution is a high-framerate camera (PS3Eye, does not need to be high resolution) with the IR filter removed (though honestly high-framerate is not required, but the PS3Eye is just super cheap), and making your own 3-point IR-LED or reflector clip, usually done cheapest with a baseball cap (so, buying 3 IR-LEDs either connected via battery power supply, or building a USB one (though this has strict voltage), and attaching them to 3 static points on the hat, or building something to attach them to your headset), then use a program like Freetrack or Opentrack (Opentrack is my fav) which already have software built for tracking those 3 points and translating it to movement in ARMA.
It's just as good as the TrackIR system, but way cheaper if you buy and build it all yourself.. Just takes a bit of setup time and a bit of work. There are good guides online, however, so as long as you can buy the parts and follow the guide you want to follow, you can build a setup very easily.

Or if you're both really lazy and frugal, you can go with someone like these guys who pretty much do all the work for you with removing the IR filter off of PS3Eye camera, plus 3d-printing a pretty nice clip for the LEDs. They also have a modified version of opentrack to work specifically with their builds, though I'm not sure what's different about it. Still ends up being a lot cheaper than the TrackIR that does the same thing, but I would still recommend building your own if you're up for it. It's really not a hard process at all.

It works stupidly well, and makes things like flying and landing choppers and planes 100x less risky. You get a whole lot less blind spots. It's also pretty neat to be able to keep your crosshairs at one target, while looking in a different direction to watch another target.

Like others said, the C920 is a fantastic camera and a lot of streamers (myself included) use it and it everything looks great. There were some instances where it went down to $40 USD (around Black Friday).

If you want a cheap 60fps webcam the PS Eye ($10 + $2 CL Eye drivers). It looks decent for a 480p camera assuming you have good lighting.

I honestly wouldn't recommend the PS Eye unless you plan on streaming games with handcam action (rhythm games, maybe fighting?).

Also, you can buy a used PS3 Eye for quite cheap, along with the drivers for it from Code Labratories for $3. The PS3 Eye is just about one of the best webcams you can purchase for a DIY FaceTrackNoIR rig.

I use the PSeye with this driver (the driver costs $1.99, but it's the only one I know of) and it works flawlessly for voice coms in games. I don't think you can get a better setup for $11.

You can build your own IR headtracker for cheap (less than $50 total). You can find hardware plans here (if you don't have access to a 3d printer directly you can find people online to print it for you, or you can google around for other home built options), you can buy a PS3Eye camera on Amazon along with an IR Filter, and the OpenTrack software is free. The hardware assembly is simple enough to do with no soldering (I recommend you do solder if you know how) and the OpenTrack software is very easy to configure.

Nintendo DS edition is probably the best version. Quick cartridge loading and also contains the anime fmv's from the Playstation 1 version. Best English translation in this version as well. Here's an amazon link. It's $45 there but it's one of the best games of all time.

If you don't mind playing games with Super Nintendo graphics (I sure as hell don't) Chrono Trigger will hold up today without any problems, though this is also probably due to the stagnant JPRG archetype. check your power port, make sure you don't have metal shavings or something in there. The only way to kill these adapters is to short them out. I have also heard bad things about the bulk adapters on amazon, some of them are fakes and give inconsistent voltages when checked with a multimeter. If you can't find one in a local store you can order a new one from nintendo's website.

Also, you may want to try a USB adapter. You will be able to try multiple chargers this way which should help you troubleshoot.

Pretty much any starter kit is just cheap crap. I'd advise you to just spend a little extra and buy quality.

You could argue that the majority of households own a TV suitable for xbox gameplay, but are less likely to have a monitor acceptable for equivalent PC gaming in an appropriate location. But that's a difficult argument to make either way, so I guess it's fair to ignore monitor/tv pricing.

But xbox live is only $60/year if you put no effort into finding a discount. Amazon sells a year for $40.

Just rehashing some of the numbers. I tried so hard to convince myself to build a pc rather than get a next-gen system, but as long as I'm not looking for insanely high-end graphics that significantly beat a console, I just absolutely can't support the notion from a fiscal perspective.

New official Wii Classic Controller Pros go for around $50 online and since they're out of production it's very unlikely you'll find one in a store.

If you want a good aftermarket controller, get the generic brand Classic Pro Controller. If you want to make sure you get the official Nintendo version, that one's Here..

The Classic Pro is fantastic for what you want to do, since GC controllers are not yet compatible. Personally, at this stage I'd rather just wait two months so I can play using a GC controller, but keep in mind that it has not been announced whether the GC adapter will work in the Wii menu through the Wii U.

On Amazon you can get a Wii Remote and a Wii Classic Controller Pro for about $35. It's a little clunky to have two things connected together, but it works well and the controller is nice.

It really depends on how much quality you demand. I for myself was never happy with knockoffs and always bought (and still buy) original controllers, no matter for which platform. Especially for the Wii there are sometimes promotions in local stores, i.e. I got a Wii Classic Controller Pro for 18 € in a local store. That’s pretty decent and I also use it to play games in DeSmuME.

You'll need the Wii Remote anyway (the Wii U's Pro controller doesn't work for Wii games either). This is the controller I was talking about that you'd need for the VC games.

Personally, I'd recommend you get all 3 (Wiimote, Nunchuck, and Classic Controller), but if you can't then the one you get will depend on which games you'd rather play.

How about this? Unless you meant the actual gamecube controller, in which case best bet would be to try off ebay, or go to Amazon and get them used. You could try this used, but idk if it's guaranteed to be a Nintendo brand and not off brand. Regardless, the chance is only about $15.

Careful, those are probably knock-off, and might be bad quality. For the best experience, I'd stick with Nintendo (though used should be fine too, as long as it's first party).

I tried using the Wii classic controller to play brawl the other day so I could get used to the feel of what a 3DS would be like. I was just using the default controls, so X was jump, A was attack and B was special. I need to rebind I think because I just couldn't get my head around jump, I would move my thumb right and just press A to jump.

So someone hits me off a platform and then my guy just goes punch as he glides to his doom. So the tiniest change of keys messed up my play pretty bad.

That same day I tried Super smash flash for the first time, with the awkward as heck U I O P keys. I picked it up almost instantly. What the heck brain. I guess muscle memory was really screwing me over xD

I know this is over $13 but its only by .20 more because there's a sale on the item.

This newer model of the classic controller is a lot easier on the hands. I know my Smash Bros.-playing friends love it to death.

If you were a virgin on both consoles, I would say 3DS just for simplicity sake; but since you already own a 3DS, I think the wii is a good choice.

Just like Dominic4523 said, make sure it is one of the backwards compatible models if you plan to play gamecube games.

Also, you need to know that you will need a lot of stuff to fully enjoy what the wii has to offer.

You need a wiimote + nunchuck for most wii games. Some will only need the wiimote, but most will need you to have both, for every player too.

If you plan to play gamecube games, you'll need a gamecube controller and a gamecube memory card to save your progress. Those games are not playable with the wiimote.

Last, if you plan to get virtual console games, you'll need a classic controller model 1 or model 2; and also, the wii shop channel will not be selling points starting next Monday March 26th, so you'll have to check the store asap for potential purchases.

If after knowing all that you still want a wii, go for it, but it is definitely way easier to just got a new 3DS.

a brand new Xbox 360 E is $179 delivered, and comes with a one year warranty and a controller. So if you are buying used, I would not pay more than $90, and for that price, it had better come with the AV cable and at least one good wireless controller.

Of the three styles, I would not buy the originals, mostly because they don't have built-in WiFi. The 360 S for $190 delivered is in my mind the best model, as it has an optical audio out port, an AV cable port (can accept composite, component, and VGA cables), and five USB ports. the 360 E has only four USB ports, no optical audio output, and only composite analog video.

Pick one and use that instead of a pc, just kidding, but seriously listen servers are awful for any kind of pvp game especially fps games, I have no problem with matchmaking on dedis like csgo, but fuck me if I have to play cod again on listen servers. (Oh and I know you said dedis+ matchmaking, but separating an already small userbase is never a good idea)

I'm curious though, why do you want matchmaking? It can't be the party system because that works on dedis as well, it can't be that it's easier because it's not, you can easily find a server with whatever gamemode you want if you don't care about the connection which you obviously don't since you want to play on listen servers. Afraid of getting kicked by admins? True, that is a problem, but that can easily get fixed by actually using the favorites feature that every good server browser have.

Yes, it has laughably little storage. So does the $300 WiiU. The xbox360 uses a laptop-size harddrive in an enclosure, and can be swapped out for a larger one with a little effort. The WiiU appears to be locked down.

It's also worth noting that you can easily get a "decent" xbox360 secondhand.

If the quantity and quality of releases is anything like it was on the Wii, $300 is very steep for something which most people will use sparingly for two years.

I bought a knockoff for about $8 USD made for the Wii. Mine looks like this but mine's not even name brand and this one is on sale.. Typically you use this when your wireless router doesn't give a strong enough signal. I hear a lot of people doing absolutely fine with modern routers.

I've heard that 3rd party network adapters like that one work with both PC and Wii/U/Switch. Is this true? I'd love to have the option for the consoles and my MacBook since the newer models don't have a CATV port.

Any info on this would be greatly appreciated. :)

I actually bought a generic wii lan adapter similar to this. However, the brand I got was HDE . I was lucky that people were asking questions about it because it was there i figured out it worked for the Wii U. In my case, there was no issue with this one. It worked right out of the box bag. I can't say anything about the one you currently have, but I can say that not all the offbrand ones have this issue.

The number one thing I recommend is to get a wired network adapter. I grabbed one of them off Amazon for like $10 and haven't regretted it.

With ZombiU, you'll have to go into the game settings and tell it to pump the sound out of the controller. You will have to use both the controller and monitor to play the game though.

With MH3U, after you update the game, you can go into the settings and enable Type 2 for the controller for off-screen play. This will make all the audio for the game come out of the controller, and the controller will mirror the monitor. You can turn off the monitor and just use the controller, or you can use the monitor and not look at the controller, whichever is more convenient for you. (With Type 1, the monitor will show the game and the controller will show some touchscreen options, sorta like you're playing a giant 3DS. I forget if audio comes out of the controller in this case or not.)

Btw, I recommend using some nice headphones with the gamepad, as well as setting the sound output for the gamepad to surround.

I was also getting some really awful network speeds on my Wii U. I ended up picking up a USB Wired Network adapter and that seems to have fixed the problem entirely.

I do but that doesn't matter since here's Amazon.com which gives me American pricing (amazon.ca gives Canadian). The controller is $37 on sale from $50. There's some that are less than $30 but they're all on sale. Regular price they're no less than $40 unless you're looking at off brand controllers which are $30 regular price.

I've had mine since launch, don't use it whatsoever. I plug in my 360 controller to my PC, and I don't use my Steamlink because a) I don't need it at all and b) the minor delay is unbearable for me.

If you don't have a x360 controller, you can get one for 30$ on amazon, but you lose the configuration options you'd get with Steam and it's not wireless.

Seems to me there's three reasons to buy Wii U Smash when you already have it on 3DS:

• You have a crew that comes over and games and Smash would get played.
  
• You want to start going to tournaments, you should be practicing on the right hardware and the most recent software updates.
  
• You are certain you'd play online and you want the bigger screen when you do.
  
  I bought it when we got the Wii U over Christmas because of the first bullet point; Fighting games aren't my jam, but if we have 5+ people over then odds are 3 or more will be up for Smash. I rarely play it by myself, but it sees as much play as anything we own because of people coming over.
  
  If you decide to get it, you'll need the right set up too. Fighting game tournaments require wired controllers, and on the Wii U that requires an adapter.

  I think it was a holiday special, but you may be able to find a local walmart, target, or something that still has it for $300. If you can't, the Mario Kart bundle is less than $300 on Amazon, and Smash is usually right at $50 new on there.
  
  In addition to the gamepad (default controller), there's two options for Smash-compatible controllers, the "Fight Pad" that plugs into the back of the WiiMote, and the "Smash Bros Gamecube Controller" that plugs into a Gamecube adapter. At tournaments, they'll make you use Gamecube controllers wired through an adapter, otherwise there's too much interference.
  
  If you have old Wii accessories, you can use wiimote/nunchuk combos from that, and if you have the gamecube adapter you can use old gamecube controllers.
  
  Lots of the Smash DLC is discounted if you buy it for the 3DS and Wii U at the same time.
  
  Don't forget, there's lots of other solid games for the Wii U that aren't on any other console - you can find lists in other places on this or the Wii U sub - that may make the math look a little better.

The reason I recommend this is because the latest development builds of Dolphin have native controller support built in. This means you can just setup the adapter to work with Dolphin and then plug in your Gamecube controllers and you're ready to go with no additional setup. The controllers auto calibrate just like on a real console and you can even unplug controllers and plug them back in during gameplay and everything will still work. It's works really awesome.
