I have knee issues too. For a good no-impact cardio workout; buy a rowing machine, stick it in your living room, get bluetooth headphones, put on the next episode of your favorite show or a movie you want to watch, and row. It's great. Here's a good starter model: https://www.amazon.com/Sunny-Health-Fitness-Magnetic-SF-RW5515/dp/B017HSNIEW

u/SanguineMermaid · 7 pointsr/TrollXChromosomes

I've never rowed before - I only bought it because I needed cardio & my posture is terrible. Maybe the cheap one I bought is magic?

u/AlexTakeTwo · 7 pointsr/AskWomenOver30

I have a teeny machine at home, I am short so the reviews saying that "this is not big enough for tall people" made it ideal for me: rowing machine. Except it turns out. . . I'm so short the machine is actually a little bit too big for me and I need about a 1 inch booster on the foot pedals.

I put it up in my "loft" which is my little workout/meditative space for yoga and such, so it's very convenient which means I actually use it.

u/dmartin352 · 6 pointsr/Fitness

I'm a woodworker (amateur) and I think I could build this, but honestly, the best rowing machine you can own costs $900 new, and you can find one for half that on Craigslist (I did). It will last for generations (I'm the third owner of the one I have and it works great):
http://www.amazon.com/Concept2-Model-Indoor-Rowing-Machine/dp/B001A0ZT2I/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1344745867&sr=8-1&keywords=concept+ii

Speaking of which, if you are able to invest some $$, I recently bought myself this:

https://www.amazon.com/Stamina-15-9003-Deluxe-Conversion-Recumbent/dp/B000TK4GYW/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1472949345&sr=8-2&keywords=recumbent+rowing+machine

Cost me a month's rent, and I am extremely, extremely low on cash, but I was housebound and desperate not to get any worse than I already am. I have not regretted the purchase. If I run out of cash next month and get evicted, I still won't regret it, and you better believe that this thing is coming with me.

What's great about rowing is that it is a full body cardio workout. Then, this machine also has just-arms or just-legs options, which is great for when my other symptoms take one set of limbs out of the running. Plus, being so low to the ground and recumbent, I don't have to worry about injuring myself if I get woozy. It also has built-in HR.

There are significantly cheaper rowers out there, so definitely take a look even if $600 is too much, but avoid anything less than like $300. There is a steep dropoff in quality after that point. The cheap ones use a different mechanism for the band and so are wont to leak oil everywhere, and have something of an elastic recoil vs the smooth resistance of the magnetic dynamo used in more expensive models. Still, rowing machines are unmatched in terms of bang for the buck among exercise machines, especially considered how low-impact they are. If you can sit upright and bend your joints, you can use one - though, the recumbent one above does not even need that much ability to use!

u/AnonyJustAName · 5 pointsr/keto

I went with this one.

https://www.amazon.com/Sunny-Health-Fitness-Incline-Capacity/dp/B07BDQZSYB

Some guys I work with were kind of trash talking, saying it looked hard to do, easy to fall off, wondering if I would actually use it/get the rhythm down when they were watching the video, etc., so I am very determined to show them, lol. They are both big on fitness so I am pretty sure motivating me was the goal.

I am not sure I ever bought myself such a healthy present before but I am super excited for it to come. The comments said it was easy to assemble, so fingers crossed.

u/chrispyb · 3 pointsr/Fitness

Make sure you hit this as often as possible

500m repeats with 2 min rest.

4 X 1500, 6 min rest

edit: Also, you will never be big enough at your height to be really competitive at a heavyweight level. If you want to get recruited for college, you will pretty much need to beat the heavyweights on your HS team while maintaining your weight. Aim for at least a sub 6:50 2k at about 150 lbs to be a reasonable recruit.

10min, 9min, 8min, 7min alternating with a partner.

u/Barkadion · 3 pointsr/homegym

I will look into that thank you. Do you have your own experience with that by any chance?

UPD.

It is a fair review. It looks to me that Concept 2 is a winner from reading it. Due to the better monitor, "normal" way of counting calories, and some Get RXd plastic parts. Xebex is a bit cheaper but still in the same price range, though.

UPD#2.

From AMAZON reviews:

https://www.amazon.com/Xebex-Air-Rower-Conditioning-Pack/dp/B01AOEJ8XQ

If trying to decide between the Xebex and the Concept 2, the primary differences in the rowers themselves are that the Xebex has a more padded handle, sits higher, is heavier overall, and folds. The Concept 2 has a skinnier handle with no discernible padding, sits a few inches lower, is lighter, and flips up on end to stand up straight (rather than folding), giving it a smaller footprint when storing (could be important depending on your space). Both have strong chains, both track the same things (distance, calories, time, whatever), both have easily adjustable foot pads. It is possible that the chain on the Xebex is a bit smoother than the Concept 2, but the hiccups I experienced on a Concept 2 could have been because there were multiple people using the machine every day, whereas I am the only one using my Xebex.

u/50by25 · 3 pointsr/pelotoncycle

Just got notified that the water rower I've been eyeing is on sale at Amazon for half off the normal price. Debating pulling the trigger, especially if Peloton is going to launch rowing workouts next year. I need to stop shopping for exercise stuff and start actually exercising today! :) https://www.amazon.com/dp/B075MB7DM8

u/theRealCrazy · 3 pointsr/homegym

I have this one that I've been using for couple of years and is still running strong.

u/CJOttawa · 3 pointsr/Rowing

You linked to Amazon.ca later in thread: $1249CAD is standard MSRP for the Model D.

There's no sale, it's just marked as "$413.03 off $1662.03 - 25% discount" which is a pretty old tactic for drawing attention to a product.

Don't take my word for it. Here's the CamelCamelCamel price history: https://ca.camelcamelcamel.com/Concept2-Model-Indoor-Rowing-Machine/product/B00NH9WEUA

Looks like Amazon bumped the price to $1662.03 on October 25th so that they could indicate a 25% "Black Friday discount."

u/petekeller · 3 pointsr/crossfit

Don't buy that rower. It sucks.

Buy a C2 or maybe maybe maybe a water rower or Xebex.

Here is an article I wrote on buying a used C2 for $250:
http://therxreview.com/how-to-buy-a-concept-rower-for-250

Or, if you MUST buy a cheap rower, get this one:
https://www.amazon.com/Stamina-35-1412-X-Air-Rower/dp/B00RPHF2AE/ref=sr_1_7?s=exercise-and-fitness&ie=UTF8&qid=1484080162&sr=1-7&keywords=rower

But really, buy a C2

u/wolf_and_blade · 2 pointsr/Whatisthis

:D

THIS kind of rowing

u/eeeeeesh · 2 pointsr/Costco

I didn't buy that one - I bought the lifefitenss one they were selling for a couple hundred dollars more. Looks like this: https://shop.lifefitness.com/row-hx-trainer

If you look at them, they are basically the same. I am old-school and preferred the look of the natural wood versus the red frame. Very pleased with it - it really does give me a good work out (it kicks my butt). And, when I am done, it stands straight up in the air and doesn't take up much room

With that being said, EVERYONE says the gold standard when it comes to rowers is the Concept2. I didn't like the way it looked, how much space it takes up, the fan versus water, etc - so keep that in mind

I can strongly recommend to stay far away from gas shock ones and that the Concept series (~$1000) are lovely, but my experience with the in-between is mixed and limited. I suspect they- like treadmills- are just not something that can be done both well and cheap. I can say that water vs. air resistance is much less important than the overall quality.

Spin bikes are a much more economical option if price is a big factor. The design is simple enough that even the more highly rated lower end ones are plenty well built, and they both last a long time while being easy to repair. The cheap ones tend to have a very basic if any built in computer, so if you want programs and such you'd have to go up some or get one separately.

My default recommendation is to stick to the well reviewed low to mid range unless either budget isn't an issue or it's something you love. Less pain if you change your mind down the road.

u/aarswft · 2 pointsr/crossfit

I love my stamina x rower. Only downside is that it's in miles instead of meters, so you have to kind of do some math before hand if you are following metric workouts.

https://www.amazon.com/Stamina-35-1412-X-Air-Rower/dp/B00RPHF2AE/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1473519473&sr=8-1&keywords=stamina+x

u/GhostBond · 2 pointsr/Fitness

Sorry for all the crappy replies.

It is true that the best piece of equipment is the one you'll actually use.

I'm surprised at the weight limit comment though. I'm in the US, not the UK, this one has a weight limit of 275lb's and is around $300:
https://www.amazon.com/Weslo-Cadence-G-5-9-Treadmill/dp/B007O5B0LC/ref=sr_1_1

NordicTrack T 6.5 S has a weight limit of 300lbs for $650.

Rowing machines are pretty popular, though at the top end of your price range:
https://www.amazon.com/Concept2-Model-Indoor-Rowing-Machine/dp/B00NH9WEUA/ref=sr_1_1
https://www.amazon.com/WaterRower-Natural-Machine-Ash-S4/dp/B000A6QIMS/ref=sr_1_1

It really has a lot to do with what you'll use though. I mean buy one of these and put it in the garage, good chance it will never get used. Who wants to spend 30 minutes staring at the wall of the garage?

Some people buy bikes just because they're more likely to ride them and use them.

u/jbv510 · 2 pointsr/xxfitness

I really appreciate all of this. I’m going to get some video and I might take you up on the PM offer. For reference, this is the rower I have and I’m having some trouble equating the videos I’ve seen with this rower since it’s a different set up. https://www.amazon.com/dp/B06WW5XXJL/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_i_nRS6CbM5TDE5X

u/ishred5 · 2 pointsr/homegym

I was in a similar situation. I like to row a lot when cutting but when bulking I only row a couple times a month. I just couldn’t justify the Concept 2. I bought this Sunny Water Rower off Amazon. I’ve had it about 2 years and it has been rock solid. Perfect for my needs.

u/gridirongamer · 2 pointsr/homegym

I finally got fed up with going to my overcrowded gym that only had one squat rack and decided to join the home gym club. This room was previously a home theatre room but we weren’t watching much TV in there anyways. I figured a home gym would be a better use of the room and our time. I had considered a garage gym but didn’t want to lose our covered parking spots or deal with extreme temperatures. The room was completely open on one side so the first thing I did was build sliding barn doors to cover it up and keep the kids out. This was my first ever woodworking project so I’m pretty proud of myself! I laid down the stall mats directly over the existing carpet. They felt a little springy when I first put them down but two weeks later, they now feel much firmer. I taped them together with gorilla tape but it isn’t staying down quite as well as I’d hoped (if anyone has any other suggestions for keeping stall mats in place, please let me know). All in all, am loving my decision. I spent a little over $2K but that will pay for itself in about 4 years now that I have cancelled the gym membership. I plan on working out much longer than that anyways!

Rep Fitness Home Gym Package Comes with rack, bench, barbell, bumper plates, dip bars and rings. This thing is solid and doesn’t take up a lot of space. I also got the adjustable bench upgrade and extra bumper plates. Bumper plates: 8x45, 2x25, 2x10. Change plates 2x 5, 2x 2.5. I had them swap out the 35 lb plates that came with the package for 45s. Total olympic weight: 445 lbs (490 lbs with 45 lb barbell) Total price $1450

200 lb adjustable dumbbell set. $173

15 lb aluminum training barbell (for my wife) $119

Rowing Machine (Goes for $300, purchased for $150 on Craigslist)

5 horse stall mats from Tractor Supply Company, $200

The resistance bands set is from Bodylastics and was purchased years ago for around $50 I think.

For the barn doors, I bought a track kit for $135 on Amazon and the lumber, screws and stain was around $150.

Running is my usual cardio, but due to some minor knee issues, my doctor is advising that I go low impact, at least for a while. I recently moved to a new area that isn't great fo running anyway, so I don't mind the change up. My first thought was rowing. It engages more of your body and I like the smooth movement of it. I've used rowers before and don't want to get one of those hydraulic rowers like this:

https://www.amazon.com/Sunny-Health-Fitness-SF-RW5639-Capacity/dp/B06WW5XXJL/ref=sr_1_11?keywords=rowing+machine&qid=1554234216&s=sporting-goods&sr=1-11

as they don't feel nearly the same as a concept (though being a small fraction of the price is tempting). I've used a concept before, and it was great. However, the sticker shock of about $1000 for a new one is giving me second thoughts and has me thinking I should go a different direction. I already tried looking on craigslist, but folks around here think a beat up old model is worth $750+, so I might as well buy new.

Another rower I'm considering is:

https://www.amazon.com/Fitness-Reality-Bluetooth-Magnetic-Exercises/dp/B07NJRWTPS/ref=cm_cr_arp_d_product_top?ie=UTF8

But I can't seem to find much by way of it in terms of reviews, and I'm not sure I want to go with something that isn't tried and true. I do like the foot bar on it. I could do a fair chunk of my upper workout on this thing.

I mean, most people would agree that the concept is a great machine in terms of quality, but has anyone here ever purchased it and thought they would have rather gone a less expensive route? Also, has anyone ever used the Fitness Reality machine and can provide feedback? Thanks!

OMG my son loves creepy kids books, and he loved that trailer. That is amazing!! I would love a copy of this book!

So I'm super really excited because today is my very last day as a smoker, and tomorrow is day one of me being healthy!! Once I quit smoking I plan to take up working out to get back in shape (though round is a shape) and this will really help with that.

What an awesome contest, and Yay for you!!!

Works well for what I wanted at the time, but the hydraulic nature does mean the pump gets hot and expands so you have to crank up the tension as you go. I used it a lot more in the "winter" months when I got home after dark and didn't want to be outside.

Most wanted is this.

I'd like this and this if I win! Thank you for the contest!

u/NotYoursTruly · 1 pointr/socialskills

Here's a couple of other ideas for you to pursue.
You could get a bicycle and start bicycling everywhere. This would get you out more and you could also pursue limited social interactions. As time goes by you could expand your range of travel, join a bicycle club, hang out at the bike shops and meet others who have similar interests.
Another idea if you're near water is you could go sea kayaking. The local shops have a lot of supportive people that work there. I eventually got a membership and traveled several miles 3 or 4 times a week, even in midwinter storms.
One more thought if you're concerned about body image is to purchase a rowing machine. A rowing ergometer to be specific. You can set it up in your garage or a spare room and use it there. It's one of the best overall body workouts you can get and I'm sure after a month or two will really help your body image and your self image as well, which should give you more confidence in your interactions with others.
This is the type that I have. This way you don't have to worry about money for gym memberships that you might purchase and then never use because of anxiety about interacting with others. If at some point in the future you decide you would like to re-visit a gym you would look better going in and again have more self confidence.

I think the two are colluding at some level.

I was shopping for a water rowing machine, its usually $400, it dropped to $300 at Amazon and Walmart on Monday. I checked last night and the same machine was back up to $400 at both Amazon and Walmart! I ordered from Walmart because their 90 day returns is better than Amazon's 30 day, but they're both a necessary evil to keep the other in check unfortunately.

This one is $179 with 4/5 stars. I'm not sure what makes it lower end, and I don't know what things to watch out for. I do want to get a rower that will last me 4-5 years, so if this one, or comparable ones, are going to be breaking in a year or two, they're not worth it to me.

I just feel like I don't know enough, and all the review sites I've gone to seem to be sponsored by the machine companies, so I don't feel confident taking their word on it. I know Reddit is just random strangers, but I've gotten advice on a lot of topics from Reddit, and I've yet to regret it.

EDIT: Maybe I'm just over thinking this, I'm just worried about spending a lot of money on...well, anything really.

u/susinpgh · 1 pointr/diabetes

No, not really portable; it's very basic. I am using this one.

If you are interested in yoga, maybe look up hot yoga. I use a couple of youtube videos for warmup and cool down, but they're basically stretching. The hot yoga exercises might be more calorie-burning.

The thing is, you want to build muscle.

I watch a lot of stuff while I exercise. Documentaries, Netflix, and even cooking shows. I feel like this has actually enriched my life over the last year.

I wouldn't go anywhere near one that isn't a concept II at this point. I've tried several other no-name machines (including models with the water wheel design) and none of them feel right. A lot of the time they just feel sluggish and make it difficult to bring up the rate. There's a reason Concept II has been the standard for years. http://www.amazon.com/Concept2-Model-Indoor-Rowing-Machine/dp/B001A0ZT2I/ref=sr_1_1?s=sporting-goods&ie=UTF8&qid=1344003657&sr=1-1&keywords=concept+2

I'm not the OP, but I have a question about recumbent versus upright bikes. I have never been able to stick with an exercise plan. I have an exercise bike, and at the time I bought it it's what I thought a recumbent bike is, in that you sit upright and can lean back on the seat somewhat. But now that I'm googling the levine protocol I'm seeing some people mention using bikes like this:

https://www.amazon.com/Stamina-15-9003-Deluxe-Conversion-Recumbent/dp/B000TK4GYW

And also something called an ergometer bike where you're completely supine.

This isn't the exact model of my bike but exactly what it looks like:

https://www.costco.com/XTERRA-SB550-Recumbent-Bike---Assembly-Required.product.100310194.html

I'm wondering if it's worth it to invest in a more supine bike. Have you used this program? Did you get one like I showed in the Amazon link or one that is completely supine?

Personally, I think concept 2s are overhyped and overpriced, mostly because of the circlejerk that is crossfit. This was eventually the rower I ended up purchasing. Seemed to me to be the optimal blend of quality, features, and performance.

Edit: ok, I'm wrong, I get it. :)
