A fire extinguisher. You probably won't ever use it, but if you do need it someday, it will be well worth the 20 bucks.

EDIT: Yes, you can get a decent one for the home for under $20.

EDIT PART 2: Aaaaahhhhh thanks for the gold! You just made my night! :D

u/Treereme · 134 pointsr/DIY

Wearing protective gear IS really important. However, please be aware that the mask you are using is only rated for nuisance dust, not any sort of chemical, or any of the really small dust particles, which are the most dangerous. A real respirator rated for organic vapors is not expensive and much more effective. If you can smell the chemical, you're still inhaling it.

For soldering and painting a mask like you have in the picture gives a false sense of security.

Edit: On my PC so adding - you can get a 3m half-mask respirator for $15 on amazon with pink P100 dust filters. Disposable masks are typically only P95, meaning they only capture 95% of dust, and it's the small dangerous bits that get through.

Multi vapor filters are $8.75
. Store them in a plastic bag and they'll last a long time. You can't smell anything when using these, if you do the filter is worn out.

If you are making toxic dust and fumes (sanding paint, welding galvanized metal etc) or don't want to swap them out, use multi-vapor cartridges with P100 dust caps.

u/VA_Network_Nerd · 127 pointsr/sysadmin

You might also try over-the-ear hearing protectors, like you might wear to operate a lawn mower or operate heavy equipment.

I usually advocate for cheap, disposable foam earplugs (I keep a small pack of these in my laptop bag in fact) but if you have some damage to your ear, jamming something in there might possibly cause problems of its own. So going over-the-ear is the safer path.

Cheap: 26dB @ $7 USD

Good: 31dB @ $15 USD

You said you are in Buenos Aires, so I'm sure you'll know better places to purchase than Amazon US.
These are just examples...

u/dirtyuncleron69 · 94 pointsr/cars

That's why you keep a fire extinguisher in your car. It's really an awesome idea. The dry chemical kind are what they use at race tracks most of the time, and I can say from experience your car will usually run after a bit of cleaning (had a fuel line barb work its way out of a carburetor).

My one buddy told me, "You'll never think you need it until you're watching your car burn and standing there with your dick in your hand."

3M WorkTunes Connect Hearing Protector with Bluetooth technology, $35 shipped on Amazon. I got some recently and really like them, makes me want to keep them on when they have music.

u/ILikeMeSomeAvocado · 36 pointsr/LifeProTips

For $8 you can have f.lux on all of your devices with a pair of orange safety glasses. Blue light really keeps me awake in the evenings. From my computer, phone, fluorescent lighting, tv, whatever. These are basically f.lux for real life and work very well.

u/Amynthis · 29 pointsr/GifRecipes

I've got gloves like these, I use them pretty much any time I have to cut something now. I loved it when using a grater for cheese the other night, and again for cleaning said grater. It's nice not to have to worry about your fingers.

Here's the same type

u/BigTrollin · 27 pointsr/powerwashingporn

Are these it? I am looking for an alternative to my cheap ones when I mow the lawn. I know that I just turn it too loud to muffle the mower, no sound protection at all.

u/real_nice_guy · 25 pointsr/simpleliving

Everyone here has said meditation so far, which is great, but I'm going to offer up some different approaches.

I used to have a similar problem, information addiction is a real thing. I believe that the brain gets used to having such a high load of information going in, that it uses this information as a distraction, usually from either boredom or something bad that's going in on your own life. Also there's something to be said for the tiny little endorphin hits you get for every e-mail you receive or every page you open. That's the most likely cause of information addiction - addiction to this tiny chemical.

Sleep

The way I got around it was several things. I didn't try meditation because normally my mind is pretty quiet, however I did notice that my sleep was messed up from being on my laptop so much, so the first thing I did was I got a pair of these glasses that block out the blue light from your computer screen which disrupts melatonin secretion which in turn disrupts your sleep pattern. Since wearing them for an hour or two before bed, I'm able to get to sleep a lot easier. Even when I'm not on my computer, I still wear them and I feel the onset of sleepiness hit me really hard around 10pm, whereas before I could only feel sleepy around 2am, which is awful. since I've been doing this, I've gone to bed around 11ish and been up at 7 bright and early the next day, even without an alarm. If you couple this with doing some book reading and shutting off that computer, you'll sleep like a baby. Although this isn't related to information addiction per se, it's still the best $8 you can spend if you have to use a computer late into the night and still want to be able to sleep well afterwards.

Will power - mindfulness

Secondly, I just used my will power to not go on my laptop as much. Any time I thought "yeah I'll just go on Google news and see what's happening with that cruise ship that sank in Korea" I'll go for a walk outside, or read a book, or listen to music, or go do that one chore I've been putting off for forever. Although in the beginning these things may seem boring, the more you force yourself out of the information overload, the more you'll begin to pay attention to the subtleties around you, which I suppose is a form of meditation - mindfullness - except I'm not advocating sitting somewhere and controlling your breathing, I think active meditation while doing things is incredibly useful. Sometimes, there just isn't time to sit somewhere and meditate. I know the maxim "if you don't have an hour to meditate, you need two," but tell that to the parent of 2 kids who has a full time job too. In non-meditation terms though, this is what i mean: I'll do things like really pay attention to how I prepare each stage of my breakfast, lunch, and dinner, and I'll put in an extra minute of effort to present my food nicely so it looks nicer to eat, but during those extra few minutes, my mind is totally concentrated on this one thing. If I find my mind wandering, I'll bring it back to what I'm doing. I'll give the same sort of attention to music - picking out individual parts of the song and discerning between instruments. By the end of the song you'll have kind of zoned out (which let's be honest, while not an aim of meditation, is nice to do sometimes) and be totally quiet.

No more internet news

Thirdly, I no longer go to the internet for my news. 99% of the things that happen on earth have no effect on my life whatsoever, and realizing this is not "being ignorant to the world around you" - you're avoiding falling victim to the media that says you have to be afraid of everything all the time, and if you're not you're falling behind the times and sticking your head in the stand.

Hear me now: that is bullshit. Having a healthy mind allows you to function and live your life as you want it, and gives you a sense of knowing when something is actually dangerous, as opposed to everything being dangerous.

If I need to know something, I'll know about it.

So, what I do is I turn on the radio, usually to NPR, in the mornings for about 15 minutes, get a rough overview of what's going on today just so I know what other people are talking about, then I'll sit there listening to music and I'll think about what I heard and critically analyze what's going on, form some opinions, and then go about my day. If I need some in depth comentary, I'll pick up a newspaper, because that still forces me to sit there and read words on a page, and not flip between things, which I used to do on the internet - it's incredible that I can click between 15 news sources and read them interchangeably second by second, but it's by no means healthy training the brain to do that I don't think. Being able to sit there and read one thing with your full attention, I believe is the best way forward.

I think this a lot healthier than being spoonfed the fear and anxiety news stations give you so that you'll keep listening to their station, or going on their website.

Knowledge as power

The idea that "Knowledge is power," is a half-truth, the real truth here is relevant knowledge is power. You won't find the Donald Trumps, or the Tim Cooks, or the Jeff Bezos of the world sitting there soaking up all the information they can in the world. They don't give a shit about what's going on in the Sudan unless it effects their company or their lives. If they do know about it, they don't agonize about it. They don't have time to have a scattered brain - they pin point exactly what they need to know, acquire it, use it, then move on. The power is being able to let go of the need to know about everything, because you'll find after a while that you actually know very little that can directly benefit your life, and the lives of those around you.

Heres your first flashlight. Please don’t touch those zoomies with a stick. Welcome to r/flashlight.

u/YouAreSalty · 23 pointsr/xboxone

I got these, which is tested by Consumer Reports to have best blue light blocking abilities. It works over my glasses too and is made by Honeywell.

The only thing is since it blocks out so much it makes everything really orange too and takes some getting used too. Most others don't block as well and thus you see more color.

u/Virisenox_ · 22 pointsr/flashlight

Those were before my time. I've only been here for about three years.
Here are some new points of interest:

  • Acebeam W10: Uses a laser to create a very small point of light, which is then focused by a lens to make an 250lm 1000m thrower with a diameter of 31.5mm.
  • Acebeam X70: 60,000 lumens. The king of output, as of now.
  • BLF GT: Over 2000m of throw for $260. It has a ramping UI too. The GT70 is similar, but with a much higher output LED.
  • Emisar flashlights: Compact, affordable, FET driven lights with ramping UI.
  • BLF Q8: A quality, affordable SRK style soda can light. Amazon link.
  • BLF/TLF FW3A: 1x18650 triple with an electronic tailswitch. In the works.
  • BLF Lantern: A lantern based around an SRK flashlight. In the works.

This is what happens when water instantly turns to steam and explodes out with a surprising amount of force taking the oil and flames with it.. Cover it and remove it from heat if you can. Small oil fires can be put out with baking soda, and extinguish large oil fires with a powder fire extinguisher if need be..

Also, if you don't have one, even a small to medium sized powder fire extinguisher, something.. Go buy a a huge box of baking soda right now, set it someplace accessible, and be ready to tear that open if need be.. Then go on amazon and get yourself a powder fire extinguisher for probably sub $30 (or hey, when you need to make free shipping) and be safer for it.

Then, never, ever, ever! Put water or some other liquid that boils at a lower temperature than oil, into hot oil and not be anything other than ready to put out a grease fire.. Keep a small baking soda by your stove.. Why not.. Be ready.. Adding wine to that chicken you've been frying in a little too much oil? Oh no, you burned your house down, no you didn't, cause you had baking soda at the ready!

Oh no, it's not enough! Not in your house, you're the Elsa of baking soda! Tear off the top and let it go! Cover the flames and everything around it, let's face it, you're cleaning the kitchen at this point. And besides, the baking soda helps absorb the oil that is now everywhere.. Get a mop, it's time to get cleani--

But wait, the beast, she crackles forth.. But you.. You are prepared.. You must attack the source! No problem! For you are armed with the mightiest and the highest reviewed of all the $30 amazon powder fire extinguishers.. Go forth, pull pin, and let rip at the center of all the flames, the source, and start working your way out.. Cover everything..

If it burns, shoot it..

Smile, victory is yours.. Call your insurance, call your local cleanup crew.. Laugh after realizing you no longer have to clean the kitchen..

TL;DR Get a big box of baking soda and be ready to pour it everywhere! You're fighting a grease fire and IT WILL BURN DOWN YOUR ENTIRE LIFE, if you let it. Also get the best reviewed $30 powdered fire extinguisher on amazon, right now.. Seriously, you'll probably save lives with this some day, or not quite burn down as much of your house...

Oh look! A $30 Highly-reviewed Kidde FA110 Multi-Purpose Powder Fire Extinguisher and a ridiculously long hyperlink so you notice it and buy one because, Hey!!!!!! This!!! THIS WILL SAVE YOUR LIFE and your most valued possessions!!!! And, free shipping over $35... BUY IT! BE SAFE!

Also, for those who have them, you rock, but you should check now to see if yours has expired and replace if need be!!!

AND ABOVE ALL ELSE!! If a fire ever seems out of control, or starts out that way, call the fire department IMMEDIATELY, and fight the fire if you can, flee if you can't.. Your life is more valuable than your belongings.

I'm gonna try to break down most of the places you could save weight, as well as give you an idea of dollars per ounce saved for each item so you can figure out the best place to focus your available budget.

  • Your pack is pretty heavy. Something like the Osprey Exos 48 will cost around $180 and weighs ~40 oz. That'll save you ~20.8 oz at about $8.65 per oz.

  • Your bag is also heavy, as you have pointed out. As /u/schmuckmulligan pointed out, a HG Burrow Econ 20 would save you weight for added warmth. I would recommend a wide width, since HG quilts are narrower since they are aimed at hammock sleepers. A $170 wide will save you ~16.9 oz at about $10.06 per oz. You could also consider a HG Burrow Econ 30, which will save you more weight, and will be cheaper.

  • The $215 24 oz Lunar Solo from Six Moon Designs would save you ~23.3 oz at about $9.23 per oz. If you don't have a trekking pole, they also sell lightweight poles to support the shelter.

  • $15 Frogg Toggs will save you ~6 oz at about $2.50 per oz.

  • You can drop the extra shirt and the extra underwear for a free savings of ~7.8 oz. A lot of people will just wear the same shirt and underwear for the duration of their trips.

  • A 14$ ThruNite Ti3 will save you ~2.7 oz at about $5.19 per oz. The NiteCore Thumb is also a good option with similar weight savings. I discussed the differences between the two in this comment in a thread yesterday.

  • You can save ~1.1 oz for free by dropping the Iodine Tablets. The Sawyer is good enough, and won't make your water taste bad.

All in all, everything here will save you ~78.6 oz or almost 5 lbs. Obviously, don't take anything I or anyone else says as perfect for you. If having extra clothes makes your hike a lot better, then I don't think the weight savings is worth it.

    Hope this helps!
u/Buzzy243 · 14 pointsr/flashlight

I'd really recommend that you consider dropping the AA requirement, OP. You're not going to be able to get "an entry level light that packs an ok punch at a decent price" and feed it AA batteries. The ThruNite T10 is probably as good as it gets for your price range.

But I would give the Atactical A1 some serious consideration, it's a lot more light for the money.

u/Zak · 13 pointsr/flashlight

Not very good. Not a good value at $35 when a Wowtac A1S is $26.

The mode selection is pretty bad. The high runtime is misleading. The battery is proprietary. It's not very waterproof. It's bulky for its capabilities. Coast lights are known to have visible flickering in their low modes. The color temperature is likely a very cool white that looks bluish and washes out colors.

u/jay_sugman · 13 pointsr/HomeImprovement

Given the door is designed to keep the microwave radiation contained you probably don't want to alter it. This may be the only thing that could work: http://amzn.com/B00NKSMPZW

u/Handsome_Zack · 13 pointsr/flashlight

You'll get plenty far with $50! u/PnwStimm has a great suggestion with the Q8 - its about the best bang-for-your-buck light you can get. However, it won't come with the required 4 18650 li-ion cells you need, and that will bump its cost by at least $15-20.

A fairly new light to the scene is the ThruNite TC15, which blasts out an amazing 2300 lumens AND comes with a quality 18650 battery. It isn't an uber-tactical military flashlight, but it has a direct access shortcut to turbo which is something I really enjoy. The UI is very well set up.

If you think he would want to play cop and look the part, you could look into offerings from ArmyTek or Nitecore that look the part (I can help with that if you want to go this route).

So long as you don't laugh at the name, there is another option: my first "real" flashlight was a WOWTAC A1S BSS v2 and it kinda fits the bill - the (removable) strike bezel is absurd, it has a red light filter, and it has an interesting driver that can be controlled from both the e-switch on the side and the tail switch (for normal or "tactical" use). Its served me pretty well, and the 1050 lumens it puts out is absolutely no joke.

EDIT TO ADD: /u/parametrek has an insanely handy website for finding a wide variety of flashlights within specific parameters. Here is a custom search for flashlights/weaponlights under $50 with over 700 lumens (which in my head is pretty farking bright). You may want to dig through these and see if there's anything that catches your eye!

Here's some simplistically delivered advice, all of them are things I tried, and while each one isn't a "complete" solution, combined together they will accumulate and help overall:

  1. Get ear muffs. Here's a $15 product on amazon: https://www.amazon.com/ClearArmor-141001-Shooters-Protection-Folding-Padded/dp/B00NKSMPZW/

  2. Sleep on the sofa once or twice a week, with good ear plugs, so you are not woken up by the baby.

  3. Understand that babies will cry for tons of reasons. Even a it of gas in their intestines will make them cry. We are programmed to be really bothered by another person crying, but you need to re-adjust your perception about crying. Imagine the baby is an alien and this is simply how the alien says "hello".

  4. They sleep longer once you introduce solids, and after that, it gets much easier overall after 10~12 months.

  5. We put this butterfly plush toy next to baby's head near the changing pad, so he has something to look at while we change his diaper. It isn't 100% guaranteed to work, but even 1 out of 10 is better than 0 out of 10.

  6. When the baby seems to cry for no reason whatsoever, they can be over-tired, and they don't know how to put themselves back to sleep. Sometimes I will simply lift my baby up in the air and hold him way up there for 1~2 seconds, then down again to face level, and plant a kiss on his nose. Lift him up again, and down again. This seems to calm him down, and lately he actually switches from crying to laughing (I guess he loves being raised high up in the air like that). You need to fight the instinct to behave more abrupt/fast with them, reverse it instead, when they cry just be compassionate and merciful, be slower and even more gentle, hold them gently and walk. Babies love that feeling of being carried and your steps seem to have a calming effect on them.

  7. Get a yoga ball, hold them gently in a sleeping position, and bounce on the ball. Try different speeds and heights. Be careful not to fall back with the baby. Works like magic for us!

  8. Focus on taking care of yourself, your physical needs, your mental needs, and communicate those needs with your wife. Every person is different, and needs different amounts of sleep, fun, sex, food, social interaction, walking outside to breath fresh air, etc. Just discuss this with your wife and I guarantee she can help you out more than you think!

  9. DO NOT hate on yourself. I clearly remember with my first child this dark thought of literally throwing her out of the window. I did not sleep for 3 days, I was hungry, thirsty, my head was exploding because I had the flu, I didn't have sex for 6 month+, and I just had about enough of the whole thing. But then you look at that baby and you realize they depend on you for everything, they are absolutely helpless, and you need to practice squeezing the love out of you for that little being :-) I find this is a great skill to master regardless of your baby, it comes in handy when dealing with obnoxious people in general, at work, with family or with society at large.

That's all I got for you today. Good luck!

u/voneahhh · 12 pointsr/lifehacks

Another lifehack since people are worried they won't have a large baking sheet or anything to cover the fire with.

$15 well invested friend, you only have one set of lungs.

u/joelav · 11 pointsr/woodworking

It's not the goggles it's the dust mask. Those mask are not really that effective. They don't seal well, which is why your goggles fog up. All that air getting out and fogging up your goggles is equal to the amount of dust your are sucking in.

I wear glasses and goggles, but I wear one of these. It's actually a lot more comfortable to wear for long periods of time than a paper mask. I also have the organic vapor cartridges for when I spray finishes.

Okay, lots of questions there. It seems like you’re asking for one light that will do what most of us would have three for. As a general concept, any light you have will be balancing size versus power. The main issue there is heat dissipation. You can get tiny, absurdly powerful pocket lights (4000+ lumen Emisar D4 is a great example) but they can sustain that brightness level for about 15 seconds before they start thermally throttling down, and you can literally start fires with them. Any single-18650 light is going to be able to dissipate enough heat to put out a maximum of about 700 lumens continuously, and maybe as much as 1000. Turbo has its place, but for any kind of extended run you aren’t going to need (or maybe even want) something that bright. I rotate through a handful of edc lights (BLF-A6, Fireflies E07, which is just as much a stupid hot rod as the D4, and the Emisar D4s, which is actually practical enough to be a recommendation.) All of these are set to come on at a ~200 lumen level out of the pocket, and I rarely need more.

The Eagtac lights you linked to are probably great, but I don’t have any personal experience with them. For your EDC you’d probably be fine getting the smallest single 18650 option there.

Answering your question about sacrificing lumens for throw, yes, basically, but it depends on the application for the light. Most of the edc lights you’ll see around here tend to have a balance of flood and throw, trending to the flood side. The three I cycle through are balance on the flood side, pure flood, and balance on the throw side respectively. For day to day edc stuff, I don’t generally find myself needing much throw at all.

Your statement about occasional use looking for dogs by the lake sounds to me like a use case for a completely different light. There’s no sense in buying something to fit that use case that won’t work as well in your EDC that’s 99% of your use. You would want either a thrower or something with a balance of throw and flood. The standard recommendation there is a BLF Q8, which is a four-18660 “soda can” format light, and just blasts a whole crapload of light a long way. The Emisar D4s is a single-26650 light that’s just barely too big to pocket carry (I use a holster) but it has a nearly identical beam profile, and is hard to go wrong with. Between them in size, and since you really like USB-C, my actual recommendation is a Sofirn SP36. It’s somewhat new to the market, but it was designed by the BLF folks, gets good reviews, and Sofirn is a good manufacturer. It’s basically a three-cell version of the BLF Q8 (which they also manufacture.)

If that still seems like too much flood, and dangit you want a lightsaber, get a Thrunite Catapult V6. It has onboard charging, but it’s micro-USB. You won’t EDC it, but it will fit in a jacket pocket, and throws an unbelievable distance.

I’ll leave you with a final recommendation, though it actually fits in the first category. Assuming you’re okay with a micro-USB charger, the new Thrunite TC15 is a super-powerful single-18650 light that has a deep carry pocket clip, and I think would make a kickass edc for you. It’s accidental that my three suggestions for you just barely squeaked in under your $200 budget, but if you were to order the three I linked to you would have a hell of a lot more useful collection than many.

Weird, my ears are what I would call average size and I have a pair of 3M dB reducing earmuffs/bluetooth headphones that I bought for like $30 or $35 on amazon and they cover my ears completely and also block out a ridiculous amount of outside sound (even with my glasses on).

I just want him and everyone who takes advantage of musicians/artists to go away.

Or be a human being and take some of the money you are collecting/stealing and buy $200 worth of fire prevention equipment from Amazon. A fire extinguisher is $20. A fire blanket is $12. Our safety is a collective effort. Nobody has any excuses especially those who are profiting from this community.

u/Ephemeral_Halcyon · 9 pointsr/specialed

The school I'm currently at has the new talking fire alarms. There's either no siren, or it's pretty low. They've scientifically proven that the talking alarms are safer and more effective in an emergency. We've got a room full of AU kids and haven't had any issue at all with the alarms.

I would bring talking alarms up with your admin.

In addition, what kind of noise cancelling headphones are you using? I know ours are bs and do little to nothing. If your alarm is so unbearably loud that it's cutting through the headphones, they probably need better headphones. When you put them on, are you still able to hear conversation?

Look for earmuffs with an NRR rating of 31. Here's a pair.

If you need it that soon, you're probably best ordering off Amazon. Buy an air filter! I have terrible asthma and my buns' hay sets me off so badly I use a filtered respirator to clean their cage.

I have two air filters and it makes a HUGE difference. I have this one by the buns: Honeywell HFD-130 Germicidal Tower Air Purifier with Permanent IFD Filter, and this one by my bed Sanyo Air Washer Air Purifier.

The bun-filter is a monster. It's nearly 2 feet tall and can be a bit loud on the higher settings, but it's got a washable filter inside. You would not believe the GUNK that comes out of this thing when I clean it. It keeps the dust from the hay down pretty well and provides white noise to keep the buns from flipping out over every passing car too.

The other filter I haven't had long enough to say if it's good or not, but it's fancy and quiet. It shoots out water from the top and has "odor detection". I say get the monster. :)

Flashlight my dude, you won't be able to go back after carrying one.

Going by the rest of the stuff you carry i'd say a small AAA light that you can either attach to your keys or clip inside a pocket.

A couple of recommendations:

To clip on to keys: The Olight i3 EOS. 1xAAA 90 lumens, 45min runtime. Simple twist on/off, one mode, plenty bright for most daily stuff. If you want something multi-mode still good for your keys, the Thrunite Ti3 and Lumintop AAA Tool are honourable mentions too.

To clip to your pocket: The Streamlight Microstream. 1xAAA 45 lumens, 2.5hr runtime. Solid pocket clip and push-button that lends itself to be a really good momentary light but can be clicked on for continuous use. Really solid light, inexpensive, Tried and trusted by a lot of the EDC community. Honourable mention goes to the Streamlight Stylus Pro. Almost the exact same light but longer. 2xAAA, 90 lumens, 6 hour runtime if you don't mind the weight of an extra AAA on you.

Thrunite T10 is very good light for the starter.

Thrunite TN4A (4XAA) if you want some 18650 level power.

Manker E03H if you like high CRI and a magnet you can attach to your car/or use it as headlamp while fixing your car with both hands.

And ofc Armytek for ruggedness or Zebralight light for their superb UI.

u/OWSIN · 6 pointsr/flashlight

Thrunite T10 is a pretty safe bet, single AA so decent runtime on lower modes and good size (not too big or small). Maxes out at 252 lumens though, so a little brighter than you're asking on the highest setting. Also comes with a diffuser!

This is the older model, they're promising a new one for this year, but the original ETA was January I believe, so who knows when we'll actually get it.

Do not get that light.

Definitely not worth $3, let alone almost $10.

Get either one of these much better lights:

  • Wowtac a1s
  • Sofirn SP31

    -------

    >but this first purchase is out of need for finding ping pong balls

    That's one I hadn't heard before.

I'd suggest you do another post about what you need the light for, you will get a lot of good responses.
u/Souichirou · 5 pointsr/flashlight

WELL THEN ! since you want something to start I always recommend either the Sofirn SP31 or the Wowtac A1S both on amazon for around $30 or less and come with an 18650 and charging solution with a turbo of 1000+ lumens. Since this is your first light you probably don't have cells or a dedicated charger unless you are a vaper.

IF you really want to drop closer to the set budget pick up an Emisar D4v2 tiny as all hell and dumps 4k+ lumens solid throw (not thrower levels BUT very impressive) and pick up some cells and a charger.

But again don't rush start small.... you will end up spending more than you want to overtime..... =D

u/7YP160214 · 5 pointsr/flashlight

Do you have any more info on what you'll be doing with it exactly? Is this a "take the dog out" kind of light?

The Wowtac A1S or A2S are both good, bright lights. The A2S is a headlamp, but you can take it out of the headband and use it normally, and a headlamp can come in handy sometimes. They both come with a removable battery that has built-in microUSB charging. The "neutral white" version of either light is recommended for more pleasant light.

u/LeifCarrotson · 5 pointsr/woodworking

If by "dust mask" you mean one of those white paper things, then yeah - get a nice P100 respirator:

https://smile.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B000FTEDMM/

Less than $17. Maybe $25 in-store? A pack of disposables probably costs at least half that, and the difference between the two is night and day. You won't smell a fart in the $17 respirator. A disposable mask should be disposed of, rather than used for some imagined protection. (OK, it does block 95% of non-oil-base airborne particles - better than nothing, and better than a rag. But that means it lets 5% through, and is only guaranteed if you have a good deal, which you won't. The respirator will block 99.97% and has a comfortable silicone seal.)

Note that I am saying this purely as a general advice when working with dusty stuff: I have no idea if there's something especially dangerous about the finish. The clear coat is probably a urethane, no special danger. The paint might be lead if it's old.

Also, if you have a lot of it, run it through a thickness planer instead of sanding. You may have to sharpen (or clean gummed up) knives afterwards, but the shavings are large, lower dust, and relatively easy to clean up, you won't go through acres of sandpaper, and it's so much faster and easier. And in theory, there are no nails.

i'm sorry to hear about this. as a person who's worked the graveyard shift, and needed to sleep when everyone else is awake, here's some things i've done to get the sleep i've needed.

  1. wear earplugs while sleeping. not just the foam ones you find in stores, but contruction/shooting range quality silicone ones. i use these, they work great:

    https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0024X13CK/ref=sxr_rr_xsim_1?pf_rd_m=ATVPDKIKX0DER&pf_rd_p=3008523062&pd_rd_wg=q3SaG&pf_rd_r=7ZZEACT3AP7VMV2Y4E1Z&pf_rd_s=desktop-rhs-carousels&pf_rd_t=301&pd_rd_i=B0024X13CK&pd_rd_w=JdOs1&pf_rd_i=ear+plugs+silicone&pd_rd_r=VS3V26MAXJ8DBYBKEJQ0&ie=UTF8&qid=1500665877&sr=1

(for maximum comfort while sleeping, take out the green plastic core part, that part is stiff)

  2. white noise generators. i have them on my macbook, iphone and ipod, ready for any situation where i know i need sleep. use them with a set of earbuds, and you'll be able to block out most noise. sometimes i play the whitenoise app on my macbook speakers while wearing the above earplugs.

  3. construction/shooting range earmuffs/headphones. i have a pair of these, and they can be used in conjunction with earplugs, and this model can be used with your phone/mp3 player and a white noise app for extra noise blocking potential. not the most comfortable thing to wear while sleeping if you toss and turn, but useful nonetheless.

Finally a topic I'm passionate about!

I don't have a specific answer for you, but that's because I have a lot of experience with ear plugs, and I know taste and fit will vary immensely from person to person.

Unfortunately, that means the best advice I can give you is try a whole bunch of different ear plugs, and see which ones fit best and work best for your purposes.

Judging from my experience, I'm certain you're going to need more than one type of earplug.

A bunch of tips:

  1. This place: http://www.earplugstore.com/

  2. Check out their assortment packs.

  3. They make smaller women's and slim fit earplugs. I'm a fairly large man, and they don't fit me perfectly, but if I just want to take the edge off of the ambient sound, I use them. They muffle everything, but not to the same degree as my regular sized earplugs. That may not be an option for you depending on the size of your ears, but it's an option for some.

  4. For music and movies, I've tried Downbeats, but they don't fit me very well. You may have more luck, and there are other brands worth considering. Search for earplugs for musicians. They preserve the full range of audio frequencies, but just lower the volume. (Regular earplugs will tend to block out some frequencies more than others.)

  5. My favorite.

  6. Buy disposable earplugs in bulk on the internet.

  7. Those single use disposable earplugs -- you can use them more than once, but they do lose some of their blocking power. (Depending on the situation, this might be an advantage.) But once they get a little too soft and squishy, they're done.

  8. I often wear earplugs almost all day like you're planning. And I sleep with them every night too. That's doable, but do take them out for a decent amount of time each day. If they are in too long, even your favorite earplugs can become irritating. (And I know some people do have allergies to certain earplug materials.)

  9. Noise dampening earmuffs are also great.

  10. Keep a pair of earplugs with you in a little case at all times. You never know when you're going to want them.

If you have any questions or just want to talk earplugs, let me know. Like I said, I'm an earplug aficionado!

As for the rest of you, I can't recommend the earplug lifestyle to people on this subreddit strongly enough.

Earplugs are like a warm, cozy blanket for your mind.

Once you start using them regularly, you'll wonder how you ever managed to live without them.

I am under the impression that Li Ion doesn't enjoy getting very hot or cold so the car might night be the best place for them.

I bought a ThruNite T10 because it is small and I can use NiMH batteries which I believe can handle abuse a bit better (more suitable for a car with unregulated temperature.) Not to mention that they are considerably cheaper if I abuse them too much.

I may be wrong though. If I am, please, let me know.

u/parametrek · 5 pointsr/flashlight

Can I try to convince you to go slightly over budget? Consider the Thrunite T10 for the light. It is $20. And then for the batteries, a 4 pack of eneloops w/ charger is another $18. These batteries will last you pretty much your entire life. They won't have the environmental impact of going through hundreds of alkalines. Alkaline batteries won't be able to effectively power the light on its brightest mode either. And most importantly, consider them as an insurance policy. When an alkaline leaks inside the $20 light, then you need to get another $20 light. But the $18 batteries will never leak, so you come out ahead.

Of course if you forget to charge up the battery some day, pop in an alkaline. But get it out of the light as soon as you get home.

Possibly the Thrunite T10. The neutral white version is currently listed as over $30 on Amazon, but I assume that will go back down to the regular $20 after they get more in stock. It matches your AA high-CRI with a sub-lumen mode, and is fairly deep carry. Only thing is that it's a reverse-clicky... I've had it for a few weeks now, and I don't really mind that too much. It also comes with a nice lantern diffuser, and is cheap enough to buy on a whim. If it isn't a good fit, it's great to store in a vehicle with a lithium primary.

What battery are you using and what are you pointing it at? The materials most likely to actually burn are dark clothing or black paper. Receipt paper that has been blacked out with a marker can ignite in seconds. But that demands a high discharge battery, like a 30Q.

That said, look into the SP36. Same UI as the FW3A so it has the fun blinky modes, 5000+ lumens, high CRI, USB C charging, and affordable. It’s pretty great. Give it these batteries for good performance. You can get batteries with higher discharge, but the heat makes sustained output at those extreme levels impractical. 30Qs will get you melted plastic and scorched pants while still keeping decent capacity.

Wowtac A1S is great for getting started. I still use it all the time. Its bright, extremely durable and not very expensive. https://www.amazon.com/A1S-Flashlight-Pocket-Sized-WOWTAC-CW/dp/B07M5BV8P7?th=1

u/General_Specialist · 4 pointsr/flashlight

Single mode really limits your choices, the vast majority of good lights have multiple modes. There are lights with really simple operation where you can treat it kind of like a single mode light, though.

Check out the Wowtac A1s. It has a button on the tail that switches the light off and on. It also has a silver button on the side that cycles between the five modes. If you never touch the side switch, it'll act just like a single mode light. It doesn't come with a charger, but the battery has a built in micro USB port for charging.

Another simple option is a Sofirn SP31 V2.0. It works the same way with the tail button for on/off and the side button for switching through the five modes. That one comes with a more traditional battery and charger.

u/Praxiscat · 4 pointsr/childfree

Generally speaking you need an earmuff style headphone. Not active-noise cancelling, but passive noise blocking. The type people who work in loud environments are required to wear for safety. Some have headphone jacks. This blocks out noise from across the noise spectrum, they are essentially sound isolation for your ears. They are much bigger though. FYI....Like This: https://www.amazon.com/Howard-Leight-Honeywell-Earmuff-1030110/dp/B004U4A5RU/ref=sr_1_8?ie=UTF8&qid=1504928713&sr=8-8&keywords=noise+blocking+headphones+for+adults

Active noise cancelling actually lets quite a bit of sound through, it is really not the best tech. As somebody stated it is really for blocking white noise, not the entire sound spectrum.

u/rayliam · 4 pointsr/headphones

I did this for awhile but a little differently. I wore IEMs with some 3M earmuffs for noise suppression. Super isolating but clampy. The cable underneath the earmuff pads was fine. Used these on a long flight and couldn't hear a baby that was crying off and on throughout the flight.

u/kremes · 4 pointsr/politics

Well, think of it this way, what is the downside that prevents it from being practical or useful? There really isn't one. Since it prevents the gunshots from causing permanent hearing damage, anytime the weapon is fired it's practical. It's simply a safety device. It doesn't solve every potential problem by itself, but it's not supposed to. Ear plugs are still useful, like seat belts and airbags, they're both good individually but combined is even better.

The amount of noise reduction varies widely depending on the caliber, firearm, and suppressor. Generally though yes it's still loud, but not loud enough to cause permanent hearing damage. The dB scale isn't linear, so a reduction from 165dB to 132dB may not sound like a lot, but it will save you from needing a hearing aid later in life.

https://images-na.ssl-images-amazon.com/images/G/01/BISS/Aplus/3M/B00CPCHBCQ.PT04.300dpi.V377525867.jpg

http://silencernews.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/10/dakotasilencerchart.jpg

At the range, people sometimes forget to put their ears back on.

You can suppress shotguns, generally not as effective but still doable. Home defense is probably the most practical application. If you ever have to use a gun indoors, there's a good chance you're going to cause permanent hearing damage to everyone in the house. It's not realistic to scramble around for hearing protection for yourself in that situation, let alone the entire family.

I was molested too. I have PTSD, OCD, and autism. Loud noises are the bane of my existence. When I'm startled, it takes me hours to weeks to recover.

Sometimes you need to go to a safe space where you know you won't be startled. Here's some things I've found work well:

www.simplynoise.com

I find brown noise works best. It's broad-spectrum constant noise to help you block everything out. Works great with headphones or desktop speakers.

https://www.amazon.com/ClearArmor-141001-Shooters-Protection-Folding-Padded/dp/B00NKSMPZW

These block out everything, including very sharp or low-frequency sound. Best thing is, you can wear them over foam earplugs. I've experimented and found that when I wear my earmuffs and earplugs together, they block up to 65dB of sound.

I think one of the worst things you can do is let yourself get angry at the source of the noise. As soon as you do that you're giving the brain circuits that are hurting you strength. Another thing that helps me is reminding myself: "The noise that hurts is okay to think about. I cannot hear it right now. My future self is capable of handling it if I hear it later. I will not lend it existence in this moment by worrying about it now. I am safe and I am strong."

Your anxiety comes with a physical feeling. For me it's a cold, gripping feeling in my chest. For you it may be somewhere different. When you feel that feeling, get somewhere safe from triggers, and then close your eyes, take a deep breath, force yourself to smile, and pay close attention to the feeling. Let your consciousness inhabit it. You will feel it shrink away. If it moves to another part of your body, follow it. Soon, it will dissipate.

I wish you luck and success in your journey. Please feel free to talk to me whenever you need.

u/Cyno01 · 3 pointsr/lego

  • If you're going to weld a lot, use a respirator, at the very least a disposable one but I'm using this one from 3m and it's worthwhile, although the filters can get expensive.
I had fume extraction at my welding school and it still didn't do the job, although stick is even worse than MIG. Nowadays I'd never weld without a respirator.

  • If you're doing stringers in T joints, rest the nozzle on the bottom plate and they will come out perfect

  • If they have synergic and non synergic machines, use the non synergic ones or you won't learn to set up the wire feed and voltage separately, I find I've learned more with older machines that you have to fine tune to perfection than with newer machines that will run smooth almost no matter what you dial

  • Don't hold any questions for yourself, be annoying if you have to, but get the most out of your teachers now in school and later when you work try to stick around the good welders and ask a lot of questions

The general advice I've seen on /r/HomeImprovement is that if it is a pre 1977 house, assume it has asbestos.

As far as mitigating, I've seen wetting it down before removal, using a HEPA face mask, sealing off areas you aren't working in and changing furnace filters afterwords can remove a significant amount of the risk if you're DIYing it. And encapsulating it (putting another type of flooring over it) should remove any threat too.

I guess as an average homeowner, asbestos wouldn't be something I'd actively worry about. Radon on the other hand.....

I don't if I'm rough turning green wood, but usually do wear one if I'm turning dry wood, and always when sanding. I use this one from 3M, which fits under the face shield pretty nicely and isn't too uncomfortable.

u/BBorNot · 3 pointsr/metalworking

Safety glasses and a big face shield are critical. If I'm grinding a lot or grinding ANY thoriated TIG electrode I'll add a respirator with the pink P100 filter cartridges. Don't forget hearing protection! If you wear earmuffs then behind the neck ones like these will fit with all the other gear.

u/grimeMuted · 3 pointsr/Nootropics

These orange glasses are another good option if you have many screens. They also prevent blue light from light fixtures, although that isn't as important as screens.

u/rundiablo · 3 pointsr/NintendoSwitch

There are actually plenty of pairs that fit over glasses. :)

(I own the last safety glasses style pair linked there and they fit perfectly fine over my reading glasses.)

Don't drink soda (carbonation) or anything with caffeine. Just water or juice. Take a walk up and down the aisle every so often, and stretch while you are doing so.

Music is also good, I use these headphones with a set of earmuffs as a kind of cheap noise-cancelling setup. Looks like there's also these that do the same thing in one package.

Get the window seat so you can rest you head against the wall and get your brains vibrated for free!

I have a FourSevens M2A. 2xAA, but it's almost as slender as a pen light. It's the only two battery light that's been comfortable clipped to the back of my pocket. Heck, I don't even find 1xAA (or 1xCR123) comfortable in the bottom of my pocket. I even like the extra length, since it makes it more substantial, easier to grib and hold. It's not absolutely perfect as is. I had to put in a paper shim to prevent battery rattle, and stretch out the spring to stop the light from bouncing on and off.

As a note, I've heard that the ITP A3 EOS is suspected of being the same light as the Maratac AAA.

But if I wanted to buy a single battery light right now, I'd probably get the ThruNite I've seen others link here.

So what I've taken to doing is wearing a normal set of earphones and shooting ear protection over the top of them, like These. Works better than you'd think. Otherwise, I use IEMs at church when we play with loops/click track.

u/abhayakara · 3 pointsr/TheMindIlluminated

It's better if you can find a different solution, but yeah, intelligible voices are a pretty black-belt thing to be able to keep in awareness without them becoming distractions. Depending on where you are in your practice, you might try playing with this, but if you aren't at least nearly at stage five, it's probably not a good plan.

You might try getting some reasonably comfortable ear protectors. However, bear in mind that meditating in silence isn't recommended. If there's any way you can find a place to sit that's not so challenging, that's better than wearing hearing protection.

Edit: Found it, here's the body of it.

Edit 2: Still not available yet, so much for quick. EBay may be your best bet for quick.

Dear Customer,

Great News! ! BLF Q8 flashlight will be available on amazon USA soon. If you would like to order more, we have limited quantity promo codes(49% off)and the price would be the same as Group Buy: $40.

And If it is convenient for you, could you please spare a few minutes and help to share an honest review of BLF Q8 light on amazon? Here is the product link.

Pocket friendly

Emisar D4 $40, 1x18650 cell

Emisar D4s $50, 1x26650 cell

Soda Can style

Cheaper: BLF Q8 4x18650 cells - Amazon.com $73, or Banggood.com $60

Higher output: Thrunite TN36 4x18650 cells- Amazon $140

Decent 18650 cells will run you $5-9 each and a 4 cell charger will be around $20, so factor that in as well.

u/atetuna · 3 pointsr/flashlight

I wouldn't go for quite the same size. There's not much point to the length, and the weight makes it unwieldy. The thickness is good though. We have what we call soda can lights because they're about the size of a soda can, and I think you'll like that size.

The BLF Q8 sells for around $50. It's a great light. It costs more on Amazon right now, but occasionally it goes on sale. I'll warn that this light was created to work very well in ways that you can't see without taking it apart, and to avoid other lights that look the same because they took a lot of shortcuts that make them perform horribly that can't be fixed without spending more than it would cost to buy a Q8. There's also a Sofirn version of the Q8 that's legit, but it has a colder tint that I recommend against if you want to see rattlers.

The next light I'd look at is the Emisar D18. It's a little skinnier, and twice as expensive, but twice as bright. The best thing about it is the LED options. I've found that rattlers are easier to see with a light that has a slightly rosy tint, so I'd get warm white 3000K LED's. That one also has great CRI, so things will look more natural. I think the D18 would be a better match for you than the Q8.

You'll need batteries and a charger, and you'll need to be careful where you buy batteries. The type of battery you get is a big deal too. The "30Q" is a solid battery. Mtn Electronics is a safe source, and he lists some other batteries that will work at the bottom of the page. Illumn is also a good source. Note that these are button tops. You can find cheaper batteries elsewhere, but they will probably be flat tops that may not make a solid electrical connection.

These two lights will blow you away. They're also side clickies like the Maglite. Honestly, if you've only used that Maglite, then you'll probably be very happy with this Wowtac A1S that only costs $26, and it comes with a battery that can be charged via usb. Make sure you buy the NW version.

I've mentioned tint a couple of times. Even if you don't buy any of these lights, you should pay attention to the tint. Avoid cold white lights. Those are about 6000K or higher. A neutral tint (4000K to 5000K) should be okay. Warm white is around 3000K or lower, and makes the colors on a rattler pop more.

Update: Evidently there is no V1 at Amazon.

Amazon and it's screwy interface. They (my link above) all say V2 to me. Yes, a $55 option exists but I have no idea how it varies from the $89 one.

$55 is more like it to this budget shopper. An even better value in my eyes is the full package, side switched, reflector A1S at $26, although for a car light I would prefer a TIR one.

u/literal-hitler · 2 pointsr/mildlyinteresting

I've got one of these, the battery has a micro-usb connector, and I'm pretty sure the thing could survive being run over by a tank. It's probably going to be my best recommendations unless you're going to get really into it, or spend over twice as much. There are plenty of better choices if you don't care how much you spend.

u/Niltaic3 · 2 pointsr/Random_Acts_Of_Amazon

I have two "Highest Priority" items. They seem to be two completely different things- but they are connected. You see, this is to keep my fake-face on.

As a female who wears makeup there is nothing more irritating than when you're doing whatever, you know, looking good.. and suddenly you look at your reflection in a window or something and you're like DAMN WHO LET MY REAL FACE OUT? And you gotta fix that! All that work you spent artfully painting on how your face looks to the public and within hours it's all faded and your eyeliner is halfway down your eyelids. In order to be able to fix it on-the-spot you're suddenly carrying around your whole makeup bag for touch-ups at dinner and when the occasional photographer walks by. Imagine you're out on a date with some hottie and you're like "hey sorry I have to go powder my nose", then you pick up your 3 gallon purse with every brush and gloss known to mankind (all only half-full, of course) and drag it off to the bathroom!

This is just safety standard to cool down after you look so hot for so long. (It can also be used as a blunt weapon to beat the hundreds of people you attract off of you)

^(Also, I am not confident in my baking/cooking abilities)

Edit: fixed first link thx Youjimbo

my lie? I'm named after a song by either Bob Dylan, Stevie Nicks, or Hall and Oates. You decide which one is the lie ;-)

u/MeishkaD · 2 pointsr/Random_Acts_Of_Amazon

Maybe it's just because I am a mom, but my go-to recommendations are always the things you reach for at 3am and then kick yourself for not having had the foresight to own.

  • An absolute must is a pack of 9 volt batteries. It seems like no matter how frequently you check or swap the batteries in your fire alarms they will sing the song of their people in the middle of the night annually.

  • Basic First Aid Kit, and a well stocked medicine cabinet. You can buy a kit like the one I linked, but I prefer to just pick out each item individually. Think of the things you frequently pulled out of the medicine cabinet when you were still living with your parents and start there.

  • A fire extenguisher is a good thing to have. While you are at it, get one for your car as well.

  • Night Lights so you don't stub your toe in the middle of the night.

I don't want to type a novel here, so I will stop. Just think of the things you reached for without thinking while growing up. Start with the things you will use most often and those that are needed for real emergencies and go from there. Hope this helps and congratulations!

I don't know a whole lot yet about knife making, but I do know that if you are grinding metal you need to be wearing respiratory protection. Metal dust is no bueno for your lungs. In the limited reading that I've done, a standard 3M respirator mask with the P100 filters should be sufficient. [The price is right too] https://www.amazon.com/3M-Facepiece-Respirator-6291-Particulate/dp/B000FTEDMM/ref=sr_1_5?ie=UTF8&qid=1468293781&sr=8-5&keywords=3m+respirator

I know OSHA regulations don't allow for a beard when using an N95 mask and only allows for limited facial hair, IE goatee or mustache, so take that for what its worth, YMMV.

u/GL_HaveFun · 2 pointsr/AskEngineers

I have what they call an "E" container that is about 4 quarts. Puts out 2L/min for 2 hours. Portable concentrators are HEAVY. Work in well ventilated areas as the co2 it emits in my house gives me a headache (not enough airflow in lungs to get rid of excess co2 concentration).

Respirators like this would work if I could get a NIOSH95 rating filter. Seems like it would work and then have to find a way to get air to feed into it behind the filter.

I'll look into non toxic silica too. Maybe I could put some of those inbetween the filters?

Problem is that I have to wear these because I don't make tears anymore and need to protect from wind/keep moisture in. It's very difficult to wear TB n95's, circle n95's or even viral surgical masks without having fogging/comfort issues.

What I consider essential on the fabrication side:

Huge air tank and hoses. Lots of air tools (glue sprayer, paint sprayer, saws, cutoff wheels, air chuck, nail gun, etc). Seriously, this gets a ton of use and is absolutely necessary IMO.

Table saw. Must have a sturdy fence and be able to rip at least 2 feet wide. Rockewell is basically the cheapest one I know of that's decent. Take a look online, lots of people selling higher end ones, used, for a few hundred.

Router with circle jig and the appropriate bits.

Decent quality drill with spare batteries (I'm currently using the 20v lithium Dewalts, they've been great). Jig saw (I like the Skil brand with laser guide), reciprocating saw. Various drill bits, unibits, and saws.

Palm sander, and pads with various grits.

Bench grinder (wire wheel and stone if possible). I keep a full size angle grinder around as well, with some flap and cutoff disks.

Bench vise.

Propane torch, preferably, with easy-start (no striker/lighter, a button start of some sort)

A decent quality dust mask. I use these. Trust me, it's WAY better than breathing in fiberglass dust, or even just MDF dust.

Tons of latex gloves, "chip brushes", and cheapo tupperware for resin work (mix in tupperware, let it dry, bend to crack out resin, re-use until it's destroyed).

Sawhorses, or at least, durable garbage cans.

Shop vac.

Razor blades. I buy single-edge 100 packs and just throw them away as soon as they're not sharp. For cutting carpet, vinyl, etc. it's much better than scissors.

A decent quality hot glue gun and lots of glue sticks (this is how you position rings for custom doors, dashes, etc)

u/shannxn · 2 pointsr/urbanexploration

I have this 3M one and I use these filters on it. Honestly, I've used it only a handful of times in the 8 years I've been exploring. Once in a place full of black mold, another in a place where all the insulation had fallen onto the floor and created a dust cloud as you walked. It's kind of a personal judgement call. If you feel more comfortable wearing one all the time, go ahead. Just don't get a gas mask unless you want to look silly (or like a bioterrorist).

u/sneakydevi · 2 pointsr/lifehacks

/u/gravityalwayswins put the basics out there clearly so I won't repeat it, but I thought I would add a couple of things.

Light from devices and light bulbs can be a problem so either don't use them at night, replace them with things that don't use blue light, OR the simplest and what I do - use blue blocking glasses like these.

And the thing that has turned the tide for me? Magnesium. It has to be the right one though. I have been taking magnesium citrate for over a year and it didn't help much. I recently started taking magnesium threonate before bed and it has made a marked difference.

u/TurnABlindEar · 2 pointsr/Nootropics

Orange (or blue light blocking) glasses.

Sleep deprivation can improve mood but if it becomes hypomania you get some of the cognitive issues anyone would get. People often become more functional and focused but it can be hard to direct that focus. It might be working extra hard at work or school but is (more?) likely to be skipping work to re-plumb your kitchen or spending way too much money shopping. Pulled away from that special hypomanic project it looks more typical. You are likely to become more distractable, impulsive and irritable which is pretty typical of not sleeping enough.

u/thundahstruck · 2 pointsr/sleep

You want blue-blocking glasses, which are believed to help trigger melatonin production. I own the linked pair and put them on about an hour before bed, and I do think they help.

u/psych0therapist · 2 pointsr/Nootropics

F.lux doesn’t work 100%, you need the glasses. There is a pair on amazon that look like hardcore safety glasses and block 100% blue light as tested in a lab, I’ll make an edit and post the link below. They’re large, so you may be able to fit them over glasses.

Another idea is PS - Phosphatidylserene, it works like a charm for regulating cortisol. 200mg at night worked better than rx sleeping pills for me when nightly awakenings were regular and bad.

Basic workflow: Find something to read, save it to Diigo or Zotero, autosync with Google Drive, mark it up in Xodo on tablet PC or smartphone (with another autosync), write about it using Sublime or Atom. If nighttime approaches, use blue-blocker glasses + F.lux.

Specifics:

Tablet/PC:

I love the Surface Pro series for academic work. Use it as a laptop when producing, then lean back and use it as a tablet with a great pen when reading. The tools I use below also integrate with my phone automatically, so I have a three-part solution in two devices.

File mgmt:

I used to use Mendeley, but recently switched to Zotero for a few reasons:

- Open-source and highly portable (both the program and your bibliography/PDF library)

- Zotfile (makes it easy to save annotations, also makes file management with your favorite cloud provider a breeze)

- SciHub integration with plugin (shhhhhhhh.... but srsly it's amazing)

- However, Zotero does not have a good phone solution. If you use Google Drive (or w/e) and open your files in Xodo on your phone, linked to G Drive, the lack of Zotero phone app doesn't get in the way.

Diigo is also nice for web-first content (e.g. NYT articles, blog posts, etc.), and is available on phone/tablet/desktop. The free account does plenty.

PDF reading/annotating/highlighting:

Xodo is my favorite software for reading and marking up PDFs, with the Surface Pen or on my phone. It's fast, free, and full-featured, and works across devices. (SumatraPDF, my old favorite, does not support annotation but is still great when speed is the primary concern, e.g. when ctrl-F-ing through huge PDF textbooks)

Other:

OneNote has its perks and many adherents, might be worth a try, but the Zotero/Xodo combo linked through G Drive keeps my stuff in one place.

For blue-blocking, these glasses are dorky but dirt cheap and get the job done. This plus F.lux makes late-night reading sessions much easier on the little bit of subsequent sleep you might get.

Also, consider writing in an application like SublimeText or Atom, which are designed for programmers but are very easy to use, and offer much better color schemes than Word (e.g. dark backgrounds, text in whatever colors you fancy). Sublime is crazy fast, and Atom is prettier with more plugins but slow, so I find myself using Sublime for quick notes and Atom for longer sessions or touching up. I save everything in markdown files, so transferring from one app to the other, or to the web (or a publication) is easy.

u/green_which · 2 pointsr/migraine

If you want to try true blue blocking on the cheap, get a pair of these: https://www.amazon.com/Uvex-S0360X-Ultra-spec-SCT-Orange-Anti-Fog/dp/B003OBZ64M/ref=sr_1_8?ie=UTF8&qid=1487816267&sr=8-8&keywords=uvex+safety+goggles

You can tell how much of the blue light is blocked by comparing these two spectra: https://cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0748/0281/files/NoBlueSpectrum_grande.png?13543670373916600953

If the spectra look identical, then all blue light has been removed (this is what you see with the UVEX).

u/timpster1 · 2 pointsr/LifeProTips

Uh... this kind - link is pretty big, I have it, and it fits decently over my glasses. Mine are a bit thicker (not lenses, just general construction) and the orange does well.

I would recommend the "Darkroom mode" in f.lux if that works for you, but it may take away too much color or contrast to work well.

I've actually wanted an "LED" monitor, but replace the small LED bulbs with really bright (but yellow / white, warm white) string lights or something! One day...

u/double-el · 2 pointsr/Paleo

Almonds specifically cause me acne. I know a lot of others that cant have nuts in general because it breaks them out. I would suggest eliminating nuts for a month and see if that helps. If not it could be eggs or night shades like /u/orangetiem suggested.

Have you ever heard of orange tinted glasses at night to block the blue light? Blue light can keep your body from producing meletonin. I used to have restless sleep but I heard about these glasses from some paleo blogger (cant remember who) and i've never gone back. I wear them 2 hours before bed and I look like a dork but I sleep through the night. They're pretty cheap and they're worth a shot.

u/accidental_warrior · 2 pointsr/Reformed

Set a time limit for yourself and then go to bed without any devices. I had to start leaving my phone downstairs because otherwise I'd browse the net and wreck my sleep. If you can't set a time limit, then don't start and just go to the bedroom and read.

If you must watch, do so with orange glasses, so you can block blue light from reaching your eyes. Your brain will interpret the blue light as sunlight and suppress melatonin secretion. https://smile.amazon.com/Uvex-S0360X-Ultra-spec-SCT-Orange-Anti-Fog/dp/B003OBZ64M

You'll also look like a dope while wearing those, which may help you indulge for a shorter period of time. :-)

u/kimikat · 2 pointsr/Supplements

I just found these which seem to be the fit-over your own version of the ones Hermy (and everyone else on the internet!) use. I even found the spectral analysis to confirm they block 98% of blue light. I can't wait for them to arrive! If they work well, I'll look into RX options.

u/ibsulon · 2 pointsr/headphones

There's a "fit for purpose" issue. Considering all the outside noise in the office, you're not going to notice all the detail, and you're more likely to get irritated with the cord.

I'm on record recommending these for office use. (I really wish someone would do a mod for better sound, though. I think there's a market...)

u/agoia · 2 pointsr/USCR

I'm a big fan of these https://www.amazon.com/Howard-Leight-Honeywell-Earmuff-1030110/dp/B004U4A5RU/

Cheap, light weight, good noise blocking, and have a 3.5mm jack on them with very decent audio quality that can be plugged into whatever scanner/radio/etc you have.

Only problem is when you take them off for a sec to wipe them off there will no doubt be a C7.R or RSR that comes by at just that moment to rape your ears.

u/returnoftheDjedi · 2 pointsr/landscaping

Thats exactly how I help the time go by. a pair of these and some red ice radio.

u/ICE_VS_ELECTRIC · 2 pointsr/introvert

Hey UnicornPenguinCat I sometimes have trouble concentrating in the office due to noise also. And I also found I had to crank the volume on the noise generator really high to drown out conversations. Though I found a solution on this blog that helped me a lot. Try this combo:

u/Sumpm · 2 pointsr/nyc

Wear these. I can mow my lawn while my neighbros' dogs won't shut-the-fuck-up-already, and hear my podcasts just fine.

u/luckus · 2 pointsr/Truckers

Earlier this summer I got a pair of these earmuffs coupled with this bluetooth adapter. They seem to work pretty well together. I use it quite a bit in the shop and while running equipment. They have good noise reduction, decent audio quality, and I can pair it with my phone or laptop and listen to whatever I want.

u/kivalo · 2 pointsr/AdviceAnimals

Yea if only there was a way to block out the outside noise...

For years my poor man's solution was ear buds underneath $6 harbor freight ear muffs. Now I use either Howard Leight Syncs or Impact Sports (If I can't find the Syncs).

u/Gluestick05 · 2 pointsr/beyondthebump

I just wanted something cheap for my kid and bought these. They have fit on him since he was very small (he's 3 now and uses them on nowhere near the smallest setting). They block out noise without being $$ active noise cancelling headphones.

These are pretty good for passive noise isolation, wearing them is similar to putting in earplugs. Got them because my neighbors across the hall have a screaming kid:

https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B004U4A5RU/

u/kibitzor · 2 pointsr/tf2

One is an earmuff, one is an earbud.

Combine the two and get this.

u/the_blue_wizard · 2 pointsr/guns

OK, the Snug-Plugs are close. I would suspect that the only way to get in excess of -30db is to use the best Over the Hear Headphones, or to double up on plugs plus muffs.

Someone recommended 3M Peltor X which are -31db ($27) -

https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00CPCHBCQ

That is probably the best you can do for a reasonable price.

Here is another bit of information that ...well it is interesting.... every time the amplification or attenuation changes by ±3db, the power DOULBE or HALVES.

When you go from -28db to -31db, the amount of energy reaching your ears is HALF.

Keep in mind there is a SQUARE factor in the calculations, so Power is not directly proportional to Voltage (in electronic). And there is a 20 log or relative to power, 10 log factor in the dB equation.

But the simply take away is every change of 3db, which in terms of what you hear is small, is a doubling or halving of the power received.

My Rad-Bands are -23db, so to reach -32db, we increase by 3db THREE times, meaning the Power is halved three times. That means 32db is allowing 1/8th of the power to reach your ears compared to my 23db ear plugs.

u/amarigatachi · 2 pointsr/todayilearned

Earmuffs are the obvious solution.

u/Konipa · 2 pointsr/misophonia

I now have Bose QuietComfort 20 Acoustic Noise Cancelling headphones.

Pro:

  • thight in ear fit

  • noise-canelation is really effective on all levels. Annoying voices are equally reduced as say: walking.

  • can be used in combination with Earmuffs / Headphones.

  • Good. Sound becomes tinny when noise-caneling is on. I think its a good thing for misophonia because as far as I understand it is unimportant if the sound is loud or not but shifting it somehwhat is really helpful.

    Cons:

  • Without thier noise-canelation they are worse then these: Classic Isolating Headphones ( ignoring the sound quality - just comparing noise-reduction )

  • Sometimes when I move my head sideways or while eating they move and produce some sort of blob sound which is wierd ( atleast in combination with Earmuffs ).

I just bought them recently so all I can say is that in combination with earmuffs and my airfilter there is absolutly silence ( atleast at home ).

I wouldn’t recommend Bose headphones for noise cancellation. They are far too heavy. Something like this is much lighter on the head. You might have to wear earplugs underneath them bc tv sound is projected at an odd frequency.

Sure you’re going to have distractions at the testing center, but they are going to be more like the distractions you would hear at a library - not someone having the tv on 24/7. Different kind of noise.

Also w/regard to soundproofing. You can do something really simple such as put a blanket on the wall where their tv is to buffer the sound. Home Depot also has sheets of 2in thick foam padding that you can put on the wall like they do in recording studios.

I agree to take an actual PT in an environment which reflects that of a testing center. But for your day to day studying there’s no sense in having unnecessary distractions, especially if they’re holding you back.

u/abnormal_human · 2 pointsr/woodworking

If you're concerned about minimizing airborne fine particulates (as opposed to just collecting chips), that's a hilariously undersized blower. At the very least, step up to the 2HP harbor freight unit. For "good" fine dust collection, 3-5HP is required.

Putting a motor like that in a carpeted cabinet sounds like a recipe for overheating.

I wouldn't try to do anything about the noise. You should be wearing good hearing protection whenever you're running the thing anyways. I run a 5HP DC + 3HP tools in a small room every day. Earmuffs off, it's pretty terrifying. Earmuffs on, I'm comfortable. I use these.

Instead of jury-rigging furnace filters and guessing about how well they'll work, how quickly they'll load up, etc, I would do one of two things: Either head over to Wynn and buy a pleated cartridge filter that fits your DC or vent the air outside and open up a window for makeup air while you're working.

A thein separator or cyclone is must no matter what you do. Without one, your filters will clog up super quickly.

The electrical constraint is annoying, but running new electrical circuits is a fact of life for woodworkers setting up shop in a residential setting. I suggest you bite the bullet and run another circuit out there. If you can swing it, run a 50A 220V circuit + neutral wire out there and put up a subpanel.

u/oysoyboy · 2 pointsr/UofT

Best $43 I ever spent

Edit: Actually ear plugs might be better for you since it sounds like you need something during sleep. These are good to use when you're awake, but maybe too large and awkward to wear to bed, unless you sleep on your back without turning like a mummy

u/MyNameIsAdam · 2 pointsr/Ultralight

Nice man, both your kits are pretty solid. I'm at work so I can't be as thorough as I would like but here are a few ideas that stood out.

1/8" Pad: Drop it, cut two panels off your zlite to use as the frame and then just pull them out the pack to use at night to sleep. I did this all summer with my KS50 and it worked great. You'll need to cut a little bit off the width for it to fit, but it's minimal and not noticeable when sleeping.

Headlamps: There are much lighter headlamp options and many prefer flashlights for night hiking to bring the light closer to waist level and elongate the shadows. You can also clip them to a brim of a hat for hands free use around camp. A little thrunite ti3 would be a good bet if you don't plan on much night hiking, or a Nitecore Tip 2017 for night hiking.

Knife: The Victorinox Classic SD only weighs 22grams or if all you need is a knife check out Spyderco Ladybug at 16grams. Avoid amazon for the ladybug, there are counterfeits going around i hear.

FAK: You could likely pair this down, mine only weighs 1.5oz

Houdini P/O: Seems unnecessary with the versalite? But I've never worn the Nano-Air Light Hoody, is the idea that the houdini would provide a breathable wind barrier when used in combination? I know this is a common strategy with fleece.

Kahtoola Micro Spikes: If we end up needing them this year I'm going to try Snowline Chainsen Light. Quite a bit lighter than microspikes.

On a side note, when do you start? I'm heading out on May 18th. Edit: Nevermind...somehow missed this in your post...maybe I'll see you all in Oregon or Washington! I'm targeting a late August finish.

Some of the best: Quantum D2, Something from the Sunwayman Ti series like this, maybe a Maratac 123 light if you can find one

Pretty damn good: Prometheus Beta QR, Foursevens Atom AL, ThruNite Ti3, Fenix E05

Still good, but cheaper: Streamlight Nano, Fenix E01

u/SirRipo · 2 pointsr/EDC

Definitely a Microstream, best bang for your buck and plenty of light for most of what a keychain light is needed for.

If you want a twisty switch, though, I really love my Maratac AAA. Been going on 2 years now and kicking hard as ever. HOWEVER, since they raised their prices, I don't find them to be as much of a bargain as they were. The only Maratac light I'd spring for would be one of the specialty ones (like their newly introduced brass version, or the copper one - especially now that they've finally updated them to Rev.3).

I'd probably personally go for something like the Thrunite Ti3 if my Maratac ever dies. About the same price (a little cheaper actually) as what I paid for the Maratac when I bought it, and my buddy loved his til he lost it. http://www.amazon.com/ThruNite-Ti3-Max120-Lumens-Flashlight/dp/B00LUO028U/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1426784161&sr=8-2&keywords=thrunite+ti

My comment might have been confusing, the "reviews" that I read for it are from other sites outside of Amazon.com. The reviews from here are for the Ti and the Ti2. It seems that they keep the same page but "update" the item thus keeping the high rating for it. I contacted Amazon about this already and they replied with:

>I'm really sorry about the reviews for this item. Upon checking, I confirmed that the reviews are really incorrect. Don't worry, I've immediately forwarded this case to our Reviews team. Rest assured they will fix this so that customers won't be confused. They will update the reviews section soon. We really appreciate that you informed us about this.

  • Definitely a good light! This is the one I use. Attaches to my badge and has a clip to attach to my scrub pocket. Really great light and I use it ever hour of every day.
  • A cheap(ish) digital watch. I wear a rubber Timex Ironman which is great (and easy to clean if needed). A must have...and I previously hated wearing watches.
  • phone with lots of apps: I regularly use Micromedex, EMRA apps, UpToDate, MedCalX, Journal Club, Evernote
  • a box of pens that you like
  • trauma shears, cheap ones.
  • My program bought me custom cargo scrubs. VERY helpful.
  • A small/nice notebook for tracking patient encounters and procedures.
  • your program should buy you an EMRA/AAEM membership which will provide you with the antibiotic guide (SOOO helpful) and they will/should buy you either Rosens/Tintinalli.
  • I personally bought a panoptic because we see quite a bit of patients with eye complaints and I get a great view and can actually say I did a fundoscopic exam (helped me diagnose pseudotumor once)...but definitely optional!
  • a tablet. I love reading on my tablet. I also keep my references on it (because my hospital basically blocks everything that isn't the intranet...even google!!). But optional, not necessary.
  • Also, not things to buy, but I have quick cards on the back of my badge for common hospital telephone numbers (lab, radiology reading room, etc.) and a quick card with RSI drug dosages. That's very helpful.

I recommend Mack's moldable wax earplugs. You don't plug them into your ears like the typical earplugs and they don't expand, so no uncomfortable pressure buildup in your ear. You somewhat mold them across your ear like the picture in the link shows. They are reuseable, though I toss each after about a week of use.

https://www.amazon.com/Macks-Pillow-Silicone-Earplugs-Value/dp/B003LZQGN6/ref=sr_1_2_s_it?s=hpc&ie=UTF8&qid=1466507439&sr=1-2&keywords=macks+swimming+ear+plugs

The foam pads are washable by squeezing and rinsing a sponge with soapy dish detergent then letting it dry and reinstall again with your fingers. Not sure how different this is from your ear muffs.

u/Baldoor-E100 · 2 pointsr/headphones

It would be a lot easier to use an IEM with a flat profile and a regular ear muff on top of it.

that would also sound a lot better and offer additional isolation of -30dB (or even more)

I really don't have a problem wearing them all the time around the house, except when I'm listening to something or going to sleep.

There are also these in development, which are going to be released around November, IIRC. I want to read enough reviews to make sure they're quality and worth it, though: https://www.indiegogo.com/projects/knops-the-volume-button-for-your-ears-music-design#/
They seem perfect for people with asperger's and hypersensitivity for hearing, likely a deficit in sensory gating as well.

That's a pretty good sale. If you're not into paying quite as much and/or don't care about the electronic portion, these have an absolutely killer rating and ship to Canada from amazon.com. I'll be ordering a pair as soon as my credit card cools down after my big Black Friday order from Brownell's & SFRC (as well as a new TV).

u/crocodial · 2 pointsr/tinnitus

I bought these a while back. They are reasonably comfortable and do a decent job of blocking sound. I love them on airplanes. Personally, I wouldn't want an in-ear solution because after awhile, they make my ears ache.

I wouldn't worry too much about looks. I guess it depends on where you are wearing them, but a lot of people use over ear headphones.

Anyway, for the price, I think these are good.

You should take /u/Helicopterrepairman's advice and check out r/flashlight to make sure you get a few awesome lights. You would be amazed what just $25-$75 can get you. This light would probably work out pretty well for you. There's plenty of options. Doing the exploring you're doing a few proper lights would be a HUGE help for you and it would really help your videos too.

u/410_Bacon · 2 pointsr/flashlight
u/Newbosterone · 2 pointsr/flashlight

Here’s another crazy idea: Clip-on Tripod and embarrassingly bright pop can light. The light’s angle will change as the deck angle changes, not source how big a factor that will be with so much spill. Plus the light is mostly parallel to the road, so obstructions cast shadows.

u/Tad_LOL · 2 pointsr/flashlight

I got both of those lights for under $40. The left one is an Emisar D1 mini thrower. I just got it this week and I love it. It has a good flood but not sports worthy, I would suggest the $65 BLF Q8 (largest, 4th from right in bottom picture) or $100 Emisar D18 at for that. The light on the right is a Nitecore P30. The P stands for precision. It's a fairly long range thrower and can light stuff up at 500 yards easily. I got it on sale for $35 but it's typically around $60. There is no flood for sports either. Both the D1 and P30 are 18650 powered throw lights but pocketable. You might like the BLF Q8 because it can be belt pouch carried or back pocket or jacket pocket carried. It also has a threaded spot for camera tripod mounts and would be great for camping and sports. It will require you to buy 4 high drain 18650 button top batteries and a charger.

ClearArmor Safety Ear Muffs

u/NorseSock · 1 pointr/ZReviews

And if that's not quiet enough for /u/audioholicx8x, they can wear over-ear protection too. I've used IEMs inside of regular over-ear cans and it improved the isolation. I pretty much couldn't hear any noise in an extremely noisy office, even without music.

u/sazken · 1 pointr/misophonia

Randomanalysis:

Executive summary:

  1. Headphones + Earmuffs + Music
  2. Find a way to get people to accept your earmuffs
  3. Consider leaving note at co-worker's desk
  4. Consider talking to the person or to the boss

I have a couple of tips for you - first of all, I always have music going, but I also wear a pair of shooting range earmuffs over them (for lack of a better word). I've never been to a shooting range, but I had the golden idea of buying these once and have never gone back - https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00NKSMPZW/ref=sr_ph_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1473254856&sr=sr-1&keywords=earmuffs <- these are my personal fave (after trying a couple of pairs). Carry these at all times. You can stack them with headphones to get this amazing and pretty cheap noise-cancelling effect. In-ear buds work best, and you can listen to music, a white noise generator, or maybe audiobooks.

The above tip has worked so well for me that I almost forget I'm misophonic most of the time. Sometimes, though, my new boss likes to pop over to my desk, and there's a new Tier 4 Sniffler near me. To get over this, I've tried to have meetings in closed offices or whatnot to avoid that. I've debated leaving a note at the Sniffle King's desk secretly... We'll see about that, though. It's hard to time.

You may also wonder - how can I get away with the earmuffs? Push for it. I've had people make fun of me for them, but I say "Oh, yeah, I swear by them - they really push up my productivity" and mention I'm an audiophile if people ask. I've established a reputation as a bit of a quirky guy. I don't care - these things help me so much that I'd take that any day. Phrase it in terms of things your office would select for. I work in a place that's all about productivity, so I use the productivity line to communicate this to others.

Here's the last thing - I've noticed that people who sniffle/chew a lot tend to be either from certain regional cultures (generally East Asian or South Asian) or American subcultures (ie. college athletes - always sniffling for some reason!). I know some peers of mine of East Asian descent have gotten heavy feedback from bosses about sniffling too much in client meetings. You can maybe make a case to a boss that the noises your coworker makes could be bad in client-facing settings - or say that the loud chewing has annoyed a whole group of people.

I hope that helps. I know how rough this can be, but with a bit of prevention this can be really ameliorated.
u/3nine · 1 pointr/guns

If you're going to be shooting mostly handguns in an indoor range, I recommend these ClearArmors. They are cheap and effective.

If you go to any drug store you can buy simple foam ear plugs for very cheap. I used to just pop these in and cover with the ClearArmor.

No need for batteries and all parts are easily replaceable.

u/Bestorworst · 1 pointr/guns

The Leigh muffs aren't very good. They're designed for convenience.

I use these http://www.howardleight.com/earplugs/max and https://www.amazon.com/ClearArmor-141001-Shooters-Protection-Folding-Padded/dp/B00NKSMPZW/ref=sr_1_10?ie=UTF8&qid=1536101535&sr=8-10&keywords=34+nrr+ear+muffs combined. They'll get you hearing safe I can magdump my 7.5" braked AR pistol indoors, which creates such a blast that the concussion literally hurts my teeth and nose by the end of a dump, and my ears are fine.

Combined those two should net around 40-42 DB NRR. With them on you literally have to learn to lip read though because no matter how much someone shouts at you you won't hear it.

u/nolifegam3r · 1 pointr/ADHD

tl;dr: If sound overwhelms you try these

I totally understand this as it happens to myself as well, but usually mine is less touching unless I am really already far too overwhelmed.

I get extremely overstimulated from sound, it starts to "hurt" as in I don't feel pain, but my body reacts as if I did. (like chalkboard + fork)

I personally use these to deal with it, blocks out all sound and after a while I feel a bit better. It might be worth giving it a try to see if reducing overall stimulation helps.

u/Sugarpeas · 1 pointr/nmt

You could try using just silencing earmuffs or earplugs as well, which are even cheaper than headphones.

Like these: ClearArmor 141001 Shooters Hearing Protection Safety Ear Muffs Folding-Padded Head Band Ear Cups, Black https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00NKSMPZW/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_i_u8fYDbER5WBDN

I used to cut rock samples at a lab and used shooter ear protection. Lots of models are comfortable and cut out pretty ridiculously high decible sound so in a quiet room I doubt you would hear anything.

u/Starving_Poet · 1 pointr/woodworking

I really like these: http://www.amazon.com/dp/B00NKSMPZW?psc=1 - coupled with some in-ear foam that's probably the best you can do without building yourself a deprivation chamber,

You can always put some baffles in the shop. You'll want industrial-designed baffles though because of the dust. That'll get spendy, but sometimes you do what you gotta do.

u/SeaTurtlesCanFly · 1 pointr/raisedbynarcissists

OP, this sounds like more than just ADHD. A lot of people with ADHD also have sensory processing disorder. Your auditory defensiveness sounds like sensory processing disorder.

I, too, am a person with ADHD and sometimes severe auditory defensiveness. If you have this, then certain noises may set off your fight or flight response. It's not something that you can help... but, it is something that you can learn to manage.

If your mother's voice sets off your fight response, you can take the edge off. Try foam ear plugs. Every Walgreens or CVS that I've ever seen has these. Grocery stores often carry them, too. However, you may prefer over the ear protection. Amazon sells all sorts of good ones for around $20, but often less than that.

If you use ear plugs or noise blocking ear muffs, I will offer you a slight bit of warning, tho. If you block noise 24/7, you will become more sensitive to noise. An occupational therapist gave me this warning, because both me and my son need these devices sometimes and it's true to my experience that using too much ear protection makes me even weirder about sound. So, don't wear them 24/7. I try to just use mine around my specific triggers.

Give this a try... it won't cost you much to try it and you may find out that you aren't nearly as childish as you thought you were...

u/naughtjawn · 1 pointr/cscareerquestions

A lot of people recommended the Bose QC35 but I tried a couple pairs on in a store and found that they put a pressure that I didn't like on my eardrums when the noise canceling mode was on. Instead, I got the Bose QC20 (their noise canceling earbuds) paired with Comply foam tips which isolate more noise than the QC35s. These are fine for general background noise and talking.

But next to me are 3 VPs that are always loudly yapping, the IT desk where they're generally shouting at soccer matches or every sales/marketing schmuck comes over and yells about how their googles hacked their spreadsheets, and a large table that serves as a meeting area.

That shit was driving me crazy and we don't have anywhere quiet to go. Earplugs barely helped so I got a pair of shooting earmuffs that work fantastically. Combining those with earplugs is great for when I just want quiet but sometimes when things are especially bad, I'll pair them with in-ear earbuds with Comply tips playing white noise.

u/fndude · 1 pointr/Vive

I took a pair of these:
https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0006B486K/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o02_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

and a pair of these:

https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00NKSMPZW/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o02_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

And snapped the ear connectors off the Koss and shoved them inside the ear defenders. Now I have a pair of isolation headphones that work really well. I'll solder and make some plugs eventually, but this works great and is cheap.

u/Opheltes · 1 pointr/sysadmin

I use clear armor (and have a second pair for personal use in my house). They are cheap, comfortable, and effective.

u/Suggestathon · 1 pointr/guns

If this is an indoor range, I strongly encourage you to try out a few different types of earplugs to wear under the earmuffs.

These ones are pretty good earmuffs just based on sound reduction. Many of the slim fit muffs do not provide enough protection:
https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00NKSMPZW

u/Rashkh · 1 pointr/headphones

If you're happy with your current iems then just grab something like this to wear on top.

Otherwise, look into Etymotic and Shure iems in that order. They've some of the best isolation on the market.

u/alwaysamountaineer · 1 pointr/EDC

I really like the Thrunite T10. So much so that I've bought 2. I bought CW in September and carried it everyday until the clip got caught on my car door as I was getting out. The clip came off and got run over. I've been told that I can email thru ite and they'll send me another but I've just attached it to my key ring and it's great to have on there! It's only about 3.5 inches in length half and inch wide. It's got a deep carry clip, and 3 modes. The highest gives you 252 lumens. To me it's totally worth it.

Real talk, man. I bought myself a pair of these:

https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0723CYHPZ/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_i_VBgxCbNPQ9TA8

When my kid is screaming and freaking out I put them on and put on some music so I can’t hear him. I work to calm him (and never wear them unless I’m with him) and find that taking away the screaming is a sensory wonder. Removing that one sensory frustration really helps me keep my cool and do my best to try and help. Even if he’s flailing and freaking out it feels less intimidating to try and handle. Just being able to hold him without the noise is... freeing? I’m not sure what word to use.

I’m probably a bad person for not listening to the screaming. But it works for me.

I run a cnc in my garage all day so dust and noise suppression are a must. I use the RZ Mask and either a pair of LG Tones or more so lately these 3M bluetooth hearing protectors. Having good dust collection is a must as well so I use a shop vac for small tools like the spindle sander and hand sander but I also have the Harbor Freight 2hp dust collector as well for the cnc and larger tools. I intend to do some modding to it soon to change the crappy bag filter to a 1 micron cartridge filter. I've breathed my fair share of wood dust and it worries me but also knowing which woods are more toxic helps as well. Purple Heart dust for instance is very toxic to breath in as well as pretty much and plywood dust and of course MDF. Just be cautious but I wouldn't lose sleep over not having that $150 respirator or noise cancelling headphones. To add to that, you want to hear just a bit of sound because listening to your machines is important too. Good luck in this adventure, it can be a wild and rewarding ride!

>From the doorway (Turns into a shitshow if I need to go in with lights out and whatnot) I am just looking to see that they are there, and ideally they are alright.

I incorrectly assumed that you had to go in and do a closer check like acute care facilities do.

> my old flashlight that was red was really bright and I'd just shine it on the ceiling and it'd light up the whole room.

With that in mind, the Nitecore I recommended earlier probably won't work for you since the red LED in it is pretty low power. You might be better off getting a Solarforce L2M host (runs 18650, or can run stubby with 18350 with the extension tube removed) and a red LED drop in like this one from KAI Domain.

Or just get a white light that will take a screw in or slip on red filter, like Fenixes linked by u/ImALittleCrackpot. The Wowtac A1S BSS includes a screw in red filter and is complete package for $40.

Optics are whatever a particular flashlight uses to focus or spread the beam of light - in the case of these multi-emitter lights, it's an acrylic "total internal reflection", or TIR, lens.

Emitters are the light source - the LEDs themselves.

Anyway, I see what you're saying, and it does sound like a 5000K light will suit you nicely, and XP-L HI are very nice emitters. So yeah, do that. All I'm saying is that the ~40% brightness increase going from an SST-20 to an XP-L HI in the same flashlight is actually pretty underwhelming. If you want those emitters, get them in the Fireflies light for the change of pace, and substantially more power on turbo. Or consider a BLF Q8, which is only marginally more powerful than the D4S for the first 30 seconds, but has much better sustained performance than any Emisar or Fireflies light due to being bigger, with better heatsinking and more battery capacity. Or go seriously nuts and grab a Noctigon Meteor, which is brighter than any of these lights initially, and should maintain brightness better than at least the D4S and E07 (but probably not the Q8).

Haikelite MT07S:

I would recommend the MT07S, since it has the most stable brightness as the battery drains, and a still good user interface.

At 4500 lumens, it should be bright enough.

Get a deep fry thermometer that clamps onto the side of the pan. Don't let the oil get hotter than 375. At that temperature, canola oil will not flash.
Use a pan that has a metal lid. In the unlikely event that an attended pot that never exceeds 375 catches fire, put the lid on to smother the fire.
Make sure your potatoes (or whatever) are dry before you put them into the pot, add them slowly so you can stop if the oil starts to boil over. If the oil does boil over and catch fire, use your handy fire extinguisher

u/I_Am_At_Work-_ · 1 pointr/HistoryMemes

Keep a fire extinguisher in your kitchen. Important note: make sure it's the right type (Type A,B and C fires) This is a basic one on amazon.

Second note: Its VERY important you keep it by the door you're most likely to run through and NOT by the stove. Because your first instinct will be to step towards the door and by the time you think to use an extinguisher it's entirely possible your access to it will be blocked by the fire. So always put it towards the nearest exit. Or one by each exit to be extra safe.

> After setting—and squelching—more than 20 fires, we had a winner. We’d assumed an all-around, ABC- type extinguisher would top our list, given its versatility. But the winner’s virtues were undeniable. It stood out among the traditional models for being especially simple to operate and for its powerful, extremely controlled spray with spot-on aim that was remarkably efficient. It took just seven seconds to put out the grease fire and 21 seconds to completely snuff out the burning dish towel (and it’s not even rated for combustible material). What’s more, in each case I felt I had barely used any of the contents. This model came in neck and neck with an ABC extinguisher, which contains damaging monoammonium phosphate. While the choice between a destroyed home and a scarred stovetop is no choice at all, we felt every bit as safe with our favorite model, with its nondamaging sodium bicarbonate. When the smoke cleared, this extinguisher was our top choice for safety in the kitchen.

Since you're in Peds ICU, I expect you'll already know to have one, but a decent first aid kit is one thing you don't want to be without. Also, a fire extinguisher. Hopefully you'll never need them!

Finally, I use this blender/chopper/whisk, in some form nearly every day, and this little slow cooker at least once a week :)

you're a big girl now!

u/paperkeyboard · 1 pointr/pcmasterrace

Worse case scenario, your computer can literally catch on fire and it can spread like any other fire. The better the PSU, the lesser the chance for anything catastrophic. However, even super crappy PSUs are unlikely to catch fire. When a high quality PSU fails, most likely the only thing that will happen is the PSU itself stops working. When a low quality PSU fails, it might take some other parts with it, but probably won't catch on fire. So your PSU is very unlikely to actually catch on fire, but it never hurts to be prepared. You can buy a cheap fire extinguisher from amazon for like 15-20 bucks and just keep it near your desk. For example: This traditional extinguisher or something smaller/easier to use Hope this helps.

u/forjustonemoment · 1 pointr/Allergies

3M provides a HEPA mask which I've found to be great. A dust mask won't work, you need a HEPA.

u/timsandtoms · 1 pointr/turning

Pick up some neoprene gloves for oily woods like that, especially if they're already causing irritation. I don't know about cocobolo specifically, but many woods can have health effects if inhaled, or you touch the oils too much, and you can become more sensitive to them as you work with them more. Also pick up a respirator, I have an older model similar to this one, and it's quite nice, doesn't bother me in the slightest.

u/randomusername3000 · 1 pointr/BAbike

I ordered a similar mask for $20 with a set of filters included and will have it on saturday

u/MinhoSucks · 1 pointr/shapeoko

Definitely decent hearing protection and a respirator, I use this one and it works great. Save your lungs and your ears.

u/Zero_Phux_Given · 1 pointr/preppers

So would this pack of N95 Respirators be good for me to keep some in my car, at home, etc?

Also, now that you've taught me so much and I'm researching everything is there any advantage/disadvantage to having at least one of the P100 Respirators on hand?

What common things would a P100 be better for than an N95?

What things would you use your N95 on to prevent wasting your P100?

u/Sporkwonder · 1 pointr/minipainting

Despite what people say you should always use a respirator and not a dust mask. Atomized acrylic paint and air brush cleaner are no where near save to breath. I would suggest this one, or this one.

It is save to say that they are non toxic when used with your paint brush, but you don't want to atomize it and breath it in. Like you don't want to huff anything out of a spray can.

u/maverickmonk · 1 pointr/DIY

Like any safety gear:

  1. Anything is better than nothing
  2. No safety gear is 100%
  3. Everything is inbetween the two

This is what I use, but I also use it for sanding bondo, painting (with different filters) and working with cutting/grinding G10 and fiberglass which is way nastier than wood.

If you don't want to bother with a full respirator, the P100 is a good doctor-type cloth mask

If you really look into it and are the paranoid type though, you'll realize your chance of trapping any of the 30nm and smaller dust particles are basically 0, which can be a problem because they're the ones that get deep into the lung tissue. But anything like the above will work fine for trapping the bigger stuff. People spend thousands of dollars on systems to trap or get rid of the smaller particles, but unless you're a serious hobbyist, ie: exposed for many hours a day, it's overkill. Source: Working on a dust collection system for my grinder with exterior vents and basic filtration. It's a pain in the dick.

Best way to minimize the risk? Do it outside. Dilution is the solution for pollution. This isn't a post to scare people so much as remind them that literally everything can be hazardous in some way. Just take regular precautions to minimize the risk and enjoy what you're doing.
u/coraythan · 1 pointr/artc

Hello fellow Oregonian! Here in Eugene it got up to 430 air quality index ... that's "Hazardous"! Crazy bad smoke.

I've run up to 150 air quality index (I ran 18 miles in the orange zone.) Made me cough a few times during the run, and I felt like I could feel it impinging slightly on my performance. It wasn't pleasant, but wasn't super bad.

Today I went for a run in this half-face respirator! I looked like a Fallout character, and it was pretty tough breathing through, but it worked for a 1 hour easy run and the air quality was perfect! I wouldn't try running harder or much longer with that thing though.

u/Silound · 1 pointr/turning

Since you're trying to work a tight budget, I would skip the Sorby tools and opt for some less expensive HSS options. Sorby makes some of the best HSS tools on the market, but the price premium is rather high for the name. Personally, I'd suggest you opt for Hurricane as starting tools and then make the decision to go for more expensive tools down the road.

Hurricane are solid inexpensive tools and you can pick up way more tooling for $14 more than the tools you have listed. That set gets you a bowl gouge and parting tool, which are both fairly important. Take one of the scrapers and regrind it into a negative rake scraper - I'd use the 1" since a scraper that large is very likely to stall that HF lathe.

I'd also recommend spending the extra dollar now on a respirator and some P100 cartridges. This is the sort of thing you really want to have up front and is far more important than a sharpening jig - you can always learn to hand sharpen tools, you can't un-COPD your lungs later on. Many people who learn freehand sharpening swear by it and prefer it anyway. Luckily, you can pick up a solid 3M mask with filters for under $20 on Amazon.

So, for about $35 more than you're currently looking at, you can add some safety and get way more tooling for your money, at the expense of having to sharpen a little more frequently.

Staring at the Sun may be painless, but the damage to your eyes is no less serious for that fact. Long-term staring at the Sun is sufficient to cause complete and permanent blindness. I urge you not to experiment with this again without proper eye protection.

u/bytesmythe · 1 pointr/fffffffuuuuuuuuuuuu

You might find this article about light, circadian rhythms, and mood problems interesting.

The short version: your eyes have special photo receptors that cue your brain to be awake. They are triggered by certain frequencies of blue and ultraviolet light. Using specially tinted glasses that blocks those frequencies can help "reset" your brain's version of day and night, reducing insomnia, cortisol, and mood disorder symptoms.

Combine the tinted glasses with a decent diet, some exercise, and sunlight during the day (or maybe a supplemental lamp if you live somewhere cloudy), and you have a cheap way of significantly reducing the worst symptoms of mood disorders.

There are a few things you can do to help you get to sleep earlier:

  • Take some melatonin before your target sleep time.
  • Turn down the lights and try to stay in the dark to trigger your natural melatonin production.
  • Wear some orange safety goggles (blue light blockers) in the evening, maybe 1-2 hours before your target sleep time - this will allow you to do things like read or watch TV while tricking your body into thinking it is dark, causing your body to pump out melatonin.
  • Have some hard, wild sex about an hour before your target sleep time. The stereotype of a man rolling over and falling asleep after sex is true, and it also happens with women in my experience. There's nothing better than falling asleep with a hot young woman curled up against you right after you've fucked her silly.
  • If you don't have a hot and willing woman nearby, you can read something that is interesting but difficult (while wearing the safety glasses) before your target sleep time.
  • Do combinations of the above (e.g. I like to take some melatonin and then have some hard sex in a dark room - puts me to sleep immediately).

EDIT: And make sure your sleep area is dark and quiet. Move if you have to.
u/Space_Tardigrade · 1 pointr/insomnia

This happened to my friend when she moved away 3 months ago. She's a high anxiety sort of person (bipolar/BPD) and the stress of being a in a new place and trying to find work and poor sleep hygiene and being surrounded by unfamiliar things made it impossible for her to sleep at night for the first two months. I think having some difficulty sleeping makes sense in a new location so my best advice is to be kind to yourself. Maybe look around your room and try to make it more like your old room, is there more light in this room? Do you sleep on the opposite side of the room? Are there more noises? Take time to understand that this is a new place and you're still adjusting to a big change.

Additionally, some advice that helped me: Don't look at the clock at night, don't let yourself be aware that it's 5 am and you have to wake up in 3 hours because then you will definitely not sleep. Don't lie in bed for hours trying to sleep, if you can't sleep after being in bed for ~20 minutes then get up and do something boring or meditative in dim lighting: reading a nonfiction book, sudoku, yoga, meditation, listening to classical music, etc. You don't want to build an association between the bed and anxiety. If you think light may be keeping you up you can try buying blue light blocking glasses like [these](https://www.amazon.com/Uvex-S0360X-Ultra-spec-SCT-Orange-Anti-Fog/dp/B003OBZ64M/ref=sr_1_2_sspa?gclid=CjwKCAjw04vpBRB3EiwA0IieapP5F3V4wdWb1vd4QE5vBLFOqDE1g0wf7vWxyYKm-2twyoF-yYRUBhoCjYMQAvD_BwE&hvadid=177805272916&hvdev=c&hvlocphy=1015033&hvnetw=g&hvpos=1t1&hvqmt=e&hvrand=5210474184459830146&hvtargid=kwd-1672726337&hydadcr=1387_9901969&keywords=uvex+skyper&qid=1562587290&s=gateway&sr=8-2-spons&psc=1) Listening to a guided meditation while in bed often helps me to relax [here's one I like](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=69o0P7s8GHE&t=1822s). CBD for anxiety if you're really having a hard time calming down, I have a vape but the oil also works.

Keep exercising, keep avoiding screens (or buy glasses if this is too difficult), but I have a note on melatonin: less is more. Lower doses (<3mg) timed 3 hours before desired sleep times are more effective at entraining sleep schedules. Exogenous melatonin (the stuff you bought from the store) is meant to act as a signal to your brain to naturally produce melatonin, if there's too much then your brain thinks it's covered and will slack off. Basically, if you take a little bit 3 hours before sleep then your brain will think "okay time to get sleepy" but if you take enough to have a sedative effect then your brain will think "welp looks like my job is done."

Thanks! You don't have to take all of these supps forever, but they can be helpful.

Also blue light of about 460-480nm triggers melatonin suppression, melatonin being the hormone released by the pineal gland which makes you sleepy. Most computer and phone screens are color tuned to the same light as midday sun, which contains a lot of blue light. Thus being on screens after sunset can make you feel more awake than you would otherwise.

You can use a free program called Flux on a Mac or PC to have your computer automatically turn more orange (no blue light) at sunset. There is now also a setting called Night Shift Mode for iOS that will do this, and Twilight on Android. Or you can wear these $7 ugly orange glasses, because many light bulbs and smart TVs also emit blue light, and orange blocks blue as it is opposite on the color wheel.

You don't necessarily want to block blue light all day though, because getting blue or full-spectrum light in the morning and midday will also help you to sleep at night (I don't fully understand how this works, but light therapy is often used for sleep disorders).

Writing is the part about writing I like the most, so I get much less satisfaction out of it if I'm not doing it manually. Anything "serious" I will always write first in a notebook and type up afterwards. Like jacmoe said, pen and paper bind you emotionally to your writing, and it's also great for editing - especially if you let the handwritten version rest for a day, then improvements just jump out at you while you're typing.

That said, obviously people are still churning out great literature working on computers. I haven't consulted any statistics, but I doubt even 1% of writers still work primarily (or first) with ink and paper. So I suppose it's not so much how your writing tools affect your finished works, but more how they affect you. I used to do a lot of writing on the computer, but now I find it jazzes me up too much. Writing on paper can be as slow as I need, to allow thought processes ample gestation time so I can express things I didn't know I wanted or needed to say.

For typing my stuff out, I use my moribund Packard Bell... EasyNote I think it's called, with an external monitor (working directly on the laptop encourages back hunching and neck crunching) and a clacky USB keyboard (gotta love that "glorious noise" Redtail_Defense was talking about.)

Oh, one last thing - for anyone working on a computer a lot for any reason, and especially near bedtime, please get yourself a pair of Uvex!

u/NestingOrangutan · 1 pointr/bipolar

These are the ones Jim Phelps talks about. I'm wearing a pair right now. The appear identical to the one on low bluelights.come but are $9 instead of $70. UVEX makes several similar pairs with what they call an Orange SCT material. They all should work as they have the same transmission spectrum. A chart of their transmission spectrum is available on the UVEX website. The are designed to protect people who work around bright UV light and lasers which explains their ability to block large amounts of blue light.

u/Garth_Lawnmower · 1 pointr/LucidDreaming

No the glasses are orange. Make sure they state what part of the light spectrum they block. I tend not to follow Dave Asprey, but I assume he suggests them to minimize screens' disruption of melatonin release?

Anyway, that's why I wear them, and I do think they've had a positive impact on sleep inducement. I tend to read on my iPad til a few minutes before sleep and I have no trouble winding down with these.

u/llmercll · 1 pointr/TheRedPill

The blue point is critical, and I would take it even further. Put on blue light blocking goggles 3+ hours before bed unless you fall asleep with the sun (which is practicaly no one). Also use F.lux or IRIS, which I find to be superior.

Here's a link to the blue blockers I use.

Anecdotal story here, but I've had sleeping trouble all my life. Literally being unable to fall asleep and having sleeping schedules that were delayed by about 15 minutes every night no matter what I did. Stopping the blue light fixed my problem.

I just recently solved a similar problem for myself. (I have no problem with voices in general, but it's hard to debug code or do anything that requires prolonged deep thought with people talking all around.)

My solution: foam earplugs, plus earmuffs with built-in headphones playing white noise (babbling brook, thunderstorm, etc.).

Something like this: http://www.amazon.com/Howard-Leight-1030110-Noise-Blocking-Earmuff/dp/B004U4A5RU/

I was going to buy some "work tunes" for yard work even though I knew the sound quality was pretty abysmal when I found the Howard Leights. Which really could pass for just listening rather than muffling the lawnmower.

I can't offer any help, but I do sympathize with you. I can't imagine how it could be if it were much worse for me. My misophonia has definitely gotten worse over the years (I'm 54), but some people experience the opposite. Imagine my horror when the company I worked for went "open office". I suffered through two years of that nonsense. But now I'm at a different job where I work at home 3 days, and work in the office 2, where I share an office with a really guy who doesn't trigger me at all. The change of environment has done wonders.

Also, if you're in a situation where you can wear headphones, but don't have a lot of money, these work really well, and have decent sound: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B004U4A5RU/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o05_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

I recently moved out of a very large city I’d been living in for exactly this reason - can’t be happier about that decision. But I know that’s not always possible. I found that the noise above anything else was a huge factor for me to get overwhelmed- maybe you could try using earplugs or noise cancelling headphones, etc, for a certain amount of time every day (like an hour a day) just to give your brain a rest?

You can also try protection earmuffs. They are not expensive and some of them do a great job in blocking noise. Many of the models on amazon have reviews from people with sensory processing difficulties. I got those recently and when I combine them with earplugs, I don't hear anything. They are not that great on their own though.

A friend just gifted me these. They are ridiculously big but do an awesome job of blocking noise.

  1. Walk up and ask them to tone it down a little. 99% chance they'll feel slightly embarrassed and actually will. 1% chance they'll get snarky about it. I once had this guy and girl get snarky about it lol.

Noise isolation doesn't have any electronics - it simply plugs/blocks your ears like a pair of earplugs or earmuffs.

Noise cancellation takes outside noise via a microphone and plays the opposite of it into the headphones to cancel it out. This works for steady noise, but not very well for things like people talking.

If you want the absolute best noise reduction without any super deep insertion stuff, I'd say go for a pair of IEMs with Comply Isolation tips, and a pair of regular earmuffs to go over the top like these. I have both, and putting both on is like being in a sensory deprivation tank. At that point the sounds coming from inside my own body are audible. I can put my head against the wall and hear the sound of rain on the roof coming in through my skull.

If you don't want to look stupid wearing big earmuffs, there are also the deep insertion triple-flange tips like Etymotic IEMs have, and another option is to have a noise generator playing to drown out any sound that gets through when you don't want music (mynoise.net is a good one I use).

Hell, if you only want noise reduction, you're probably better off with just some earplugs or earmuffs or a combination of the two.

u/dzogmudra · 1 pointr/Meditation

If you need to block out noise, I recommend using good ear muffs such as the 3M Peltor X-Series. If that is insufficient, use earplugs underneath. I've also combined those with a good white noise generator like the Marpac Dohm. Noise-defense, in-depth.

Alternatively, if you have a lot of money to spend, you could get the Bose QC 35 II noise-cancelling headphones; however, they probably won't prove more effective than ear muffs over earplugs, just more comfortable.

If you can acclimatize yourself to ambient sound through meditation, even better. However, if noise countermeasures make the difference between meditating and not meditating, better to use them. This is just a more modern version of traditional Buddhist advice to find a quiet, secluded place to meditate - at least at the start.

Here's what I think can help you. There isn't really a good solution for you that isn't hard to do. I got my own room over time by convincing my parents. There are some things you can do.

  • Get noise cancelling headphones and/or earmuffs and/or earplugs. These will MASSIVELY help with overwhelming sound. I recommend these. Active noise cancelling headphones are a bit expensive, but they are definitely worth it.

    $350 Bose QC 35

    $350, $298, Sony WH1000XM2

    $250 Sony XB950N1

$30 earmuffs - these are cheap and block out noise.

  • When your dad is not in his room, go to his room. When I had the loft as my room, I often took the laptop computer to my parents' room to use it. Although you can't bring your entire room there, you should bring things in your dad's room while he's not using it. If you can't do this, reply to me.

  • Convince your dad to switch rooms. This is harder to do. Figure out all the reasons why it's more important for you to have the bedroom. Tell him how Asperger's makes it incredibly difficult to even think without a room and if you do get a room, you'll be able to find a job and move out quicker. He doesn't need to have walls around his room just because he's the owner of the house.

  • If you have a therapist or psychologist, tell them about your situation and how bad it is on you and your mental health. It's not healthy to have auditory problems and be the one person who has to deal with a situation that would be bad if they have auditory problems. If you don't have a therapist, please get one as soon as you can.

  • This is the best solution but the hardest one to do. Move out. Find a job that's feasable to get (you have the requirements to get it and it's a job that wouldn't be torture for someone with Asperger's). I know this is hard, especially when you have no time to relax and feel fine. But once you do it, you'll be on a path to eventually be able to rent a space on your own. Maybe even find a relative or a friend that is willing to share an apartment or space with you as long as you get your own room. This will usually require you to pay a fraction of the rent of the space.

The advice is very hard to follow, so take it a step at a time. Get headphones or ear mufflers first which will be a huge improvement to your mind if you don't already have active noise cancelling headphones. Remember to get active noise cancelling headhones because they really block out the noise. Then try to start using your dad's room to do things, which will probably work. You're limited in what you can do in someone elses room, but your mind is more free. Then try to convince your dad to switch rooms, which may or may not work. If it doesn't work, tell a therapist or psychologist about your problem. I don't know the best advice for you, which is why you should see one of those professionals. The ultimate goal is to move out because that will really free up your life.

I still think it would be good to answer these questions. Are the auditory problems caused more by ambient noise or voices, or the feeling of having no barrier around you or something else or multiple things? Do you only live with yourself and your dad? Does your dad know and accept that you have Asperger's? Realistically, a lot of this advice won't work. Please reply to me with what happens when you try these solutions.

This is a Peltor earmuff that I’m using now, which is 31db.
When I wear earphones and wear this on top of this I can shut off most of nosies.
The thing is, I don’t always want to turn some music or video to block nosies from upstairs, because the sound from my earphones then will become a new distraction. Besides, some earphones with a long plastic end, like Earpods, are stuck between by ears and earmuff and it causes pain over time. It’s hot wearing the earmuff all the time too.

That’s why I was very excited by 35 to 42 earphones already, because it won’t get hot and is still quieter than the 31db earmuff. Even that sounds unreal already and 108 felt even more unreal(although it turns out to be some kind of misunderstanding)

I hope if I get one of these, I can shut off these noises without having to wear that bulky earmuff on the top and/or turning on mucis or videos all the time

These are the pair of 3M's I have, with 31dB NRR. They are huge and ugly, but they fit well and they definitely protect more than the Howard Leights. You may not be able to get a good cheek weld with these if you're shooting rifle, but I primarily shoot pistol indoors and rifle outdoors, so it works for me.

I use these 3M disposable ear plugs as well, believe they are 29dB NRR. I promise I'm not a 3M shill.

Make sure you put in the plugs properly - roll them up, pull back your earlobe with opposite hand and then insert. I shoot indoors often 2x a month, so protecting my hearing is really important to me.

Seconding the flashlight and multi tool.

I carry my flashlight with a pocket clip just so it can be attached to the brim of my ballcap if I need light and both hands. Much easier than fumbling with my phone.

Also, if I’m in a situation (ie: truck broke down, power’s out, etc) I don’t want to waste precious phone battery for a flashlight, which uses a ton of juice. Gotta save those sweet amps for mobile gaming, or emergency comms.

I just picked up a Thrunite Ti3, very happy with it. It’s very small, study, great output, multiple settings, and the clip is amazingly (surprisingly) strong.

Also, a good multi tool is a must for me.

I have several, a Gerber and a Leatherman, as well as a half dozen cheap no name models, but I carry the Victorinox SAK Tinker daily. Fits well in the coin pocket of my jeans. It does have a blade on it though, so be wary of that. If you don’t go with the Tinker, another Victorinox would still be great.

My Leatherman has been with my for well over a decade, and is my daily work carry, but I’m a firm believer that they don’t make them like they used to (mine is a 2002 model).

The Gerber is a forever backup. It was a gift, and my least favorite. Feels cheap in my hands when I use it, but I know it would get the job done if necessary. It stays in my range bag normally.

These ThorFires are considered pretty good lights. Probably the best in the cheap-chinese knockoff category on Amazon. You can get better lights for cheaper from banggood and dealbest, like the BLF-348 that's been recommended multiple times, but shipping takes a few weeks. Only issue I have with the ThorFire TG06 is the PWM (visible flickering) on the low modes and the very blue tint. I've become a bit of a tint snob as neutral whites have become more common.

But for a few bucks more I'd go for a Thrunite Ti3 with the neutral white LED. I've gotten a few for a few girl friends (and my girlfriend) and they all keep them on their keys and LOVE them. Instead of using the included chain and clip I just put a small split ring on the light and slip that on their keyring. Only problem is a lost head every now and again.

A cheaper, similar option is the Olight i3E series which also come in fun colors for $11. Cool white only Comes with a Luxeon LED so the tint is probably actually quite nice.

My girlfriend is now carrying an Olight i3S-EOS Brass on her keys that I bought for myself, but she really liked the aesthetics of the brass, and I liked that it pumps out a blistering 180lm (I'd say it's a fairly accurate claim) on the first turn, so it's actually a viable self-defense light. Enough to disorient somebody, kick 'em where it hurts, and run. It's cool white, but a fairly neutral one. I lucked out.

Best to run them on eneloop rechargeable batteries, but they add a bit of weight and initial cost. Performance and runtime is best with those batteries. Lithium primaries ("Energizer Ultimate Lithium") are a good option for a rarely-used keychain light because they are very light, about half the weight of a rechargeable, and they do not leak or self-discharge. With an aluminum light and a lithium cell, the light only weighs a few more grams than a key. I never recommend alkalines (regular duracell, etc) batteries because the leakage can and will ruin a light, especially one exposed to lots of abuse, temperature extremes, and seldom use. It's basically impossible to clean lights that can't be full disassembled, so you may never recover the original performance if it even works at all after a leak.

Multitool: Leatherman Skeletool - $41.03
Knife: Spyderco Manix 2 Lightweight (S110V) - $114
Light: Thrunite Ti3 - $20

Total: ~$175

Edit - I got the Skeletool for $20 when it was on sale at Home Depot and the Manix 2 on massdrop for $98; so you could get everything for $138 or possibly less if you look for deals.
Edit2 - How about some reasoning:
> Skeletool - this is my favorite multitool because it has only the tools I would forseeably need on a day-to-day basis, and leaves out the tools I associate more with camping (saw, can opener). It rides the pocket comfortably with the secure pocket clip. The carabiner-style clip is clever, because it works double-duty as a bottle opener. The screwdriver and bit/holder gets the job done. My favorite feature, though, is that the (liner-lock) knife can be deployed and folded away with one hand, without unfolding anything else. The most common complaint I hear is that the pliers/wireclippers aren't spring loaded. (And that covers all the tools on the Skeletool!)

> Manix 2 Lightweight (S110V) - this is my most frequently recommended knife because it is:

> 100% ambidextrous
>
super lightweight for its size: 2.9 oz (82g) for a 8.03" knife (blade length: 3.37")
>* low maintenance: riveted construction means you can't take the knife apart even if you wanted to. S110V steel is known for its edge retention (I think... I actually don't know anything about bladesteels)

>Thrunite Ti3 - I don't know much about flashlights but I've had this for over a year on the same AAA battery cell and it's going strong. It is tiny, very bright and easy to use.

u/donvara7 · 1 pointr/functionalprint

Ha! I did think about upgrading the cells to NiMH but I wasn't sure the charger could charge them without blowing them up or something. I've actually had a DeWalt 24v NiCd hammer drill battery start spewing out smoke on me once. Didn't want that again. Three floors up had to run downstairs, outside and throw it in a puddle!

I had a little thrunite Ti3 flashlight which is just a little bigger than the AAA that powers it. Popped in a lithium 10440 and I could light up half a bloody acre of land with it! It did eventually stop working after a year of using lithium tho. I wonder if that drill would run into problems eventually. You could step down the voltage a bit but ya may loose that extra power.

Watching video now btw

There are similar keychain flashlights on Canada amazon that I'm looking at. One is $20 and looks identical, and says:

Output and run time: Firefly: 0.04 Lm(115h), Low: 12 Lm(6.3h), High: 120Lm(0.5h), Strobe:120Lm(1 hour)

Since it also runs on 1x AAA, does that seem like similar duration as yours considering it's the same power source?

edit: link for reference - thoughts? there seems to be 'cool white' or 'neutral white' options as well.

First, thank you for hosting this, I never knew about this subreddit until this was xposted now I have yet another place to look at cool shiny stuff and find more things to get. Second Congratulations to whoever wins!

I'd go with 2 of this link and have you draw a second person to share with.

I use a combo of xscottx and caallum2's ideas.

Those Cabellas clip ons are heavy. A small AAA clip flash light works well. I have clipped it on my baseball hat brim, my shoulder strap, and my hip belt. They are incredibly handy and very lightweight. For night hiking, I have used two, one on brim, one on shoulder and it makes a very good 3D image.

Its just an EDC flashlight: amazon.com/gp/product/B00LUO028U/

I just bought one from this link and it gave it to me for free... anyone else see this?

note: I don't have any Amazon credit it just said $0 so I jumped.

u/RockItGuyDC · 1 pointr/EDC

I have a ThruNite Ti3 that I EDC. It's a pretty powerful little light that runs off 1 AAA. It's small enough to fit in my jeans' fifth pocket, and cheap enough I won't be pissed if it gets lost.

I've been using a ThruNite like the one linked. It's been rock solid, super bright, been through the washer/dryer a few times now and has come out unscathed.

I use the Benriner along with these no-cut gloves. It's been great.

has anyone of you guys tried to flip wearing a cut resistant glove like this? is it too thick or slippery?

u/Monarchos · 1 pointr/MealPrepSunday

I'd use these gloves

u/minxed · 1 pointr/Cooking

I am also terrified of cutting myself, so my bf bought me nice knives and a pair of gloves like this: https://www.amazon.com/NoCry-Cut-Resistant-Gloves-Performance/dp/B00MXUHHGK

When they came he demonstrated how safe they were against sharp knives and now I use them all the time and I feel SO much more comfortable.

u/Jowlsey · 1 pointr/theocho

The Jamaican prep cook I worked with ages ago taught me to put on an apron and an oyster shucking glove to shuck oysters. After a few weeks of practice I think I was at least nearly as fast as these guys. I wonder why they don't use the best tools for the job.

Knife-Proof Glove

An excellent solution

u/eogreen · 1 pointr/Cooking

I've got this one. Works like a treat with four different cutting options. The handheld guard is good, but you do end up with some waste that becomes too small to carefully cut.

You could buy metal gloves to protect yourself.

u/Penguintx · 1 pointr/Fishing

Dexter are about the best for the price but they're not fancy.

I actually like my fillet knife from Cutco. The blade is extendable and it has a leather sheath.

Bubba blade fillet knives are popular. I don't have one. They come in different sizes and styles.

One product I didn't think I needed but now I can't live without is a fillet glove. Here is one for example glove

I also have a mandolin, and I have also cut myself badly enough to need an ER visit.

Now I have a pair of these: https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B00MXUHHGK/ref=asc_df_B00MXUHHGK52857762/

u/BostonBestEats · 1 pointr/sousvide

Yes, I really like that slaw too. I've used it for several other dishes. You don't need a mandolin, but that really helps. And I love these gloves to protect your fingers (mandolins scare me):

Won't help with Netflix, but I own these earplugs (yes, the 200 pack, lmao) and I swear by them. They won't completely muffle noise, but they do help a lot.

You can also put yourself in your own private sound bubble by popping in earbuds and then putting a pair of these over them. Not the comfiest thing in the world in the long run, but for an hour or two it works very very well in my experience.

I can't because of how my ears work, they have some type of damage from being born premature. I justed place an order for these, but they won't get there till Wensday.

u/auriem · 0 pointsr/Parenting

Sounds like you have a normal baby, I should know, my 3rd is now 23 months old. Fortunately you are getting closer every day to your daughter growing out of this stage.

My advice to you is to get some thicker skin, some babies cry regardless of how much you meet their needs. Try this, acquire some industrial ear protectors with a audio jack for your wife and yourself and after feeding and putting her down to sleep, don your ear phones and catch a movie with your wife.

For plugs I use the soft foam type cause they block more sound and Easier to pair with muffs. https://www.amazon.com/Honeywell-Visibility-Disposable-Earplugs-200-Pairs/dp/B0007XJOLG/ref=sr_1_5?keywords=Foam+earplugs&qid=1574205980&sr=8-5

For muffs I use these https://www.amazon.com/3M-Peltor-Over-Earmuffs-X5A/dp/B00CPCHBCQ/ref=sr_1_7?keywords=3m+earmuffs&qid=1574206802&sr=8-7

Thanks. Shooting indoors just has so much umph without the pressure to go anywhere. I used these last time. Are they equivalent or is it best just to buy a tried and true brand like 3M?

u/RadiantSun · -8 pointsr/GlobalOffensive

... Are you fucking kidding me? They're actually using 3M earmuffs? Those aren't headsets, they are literally earmuffs used while using power tools and shit, I have a pair right here, they cancel noise somewhat but they are in no way a replacement for a white noise setup, or a soundproof booth.
