In my old neighborhood someone put one of these in the MIDDLE of the main street right where people drive into the neighborhood. A lot of people complained on facebook and would move it to the side of the street but he just yelled at people in the community facebook group and kept moving it back. I remember one of my favorite quotes of his was something about how people who don't live on that side don't see "the assholes that FFFFFLLLLLLYYYYYYYYYYYYY" down the road, he said it just like that haha. We had speedbumps, and it really wasn't that bad. One day it was just gone in the middle of the night and this guy practically cried in that facebook group for weeks straight for someone to return it. After a couple of days though my sister showed me a snapchat from her friend in the neighborhood of hims stealing it haha, glad he did.

You realize if anyone reports this throwaway to the authorities, that the cops are going to subpoena reddit for your IP and you're going to be charged right? I mean you included the relevant picture to find out where this happened. Whats wrong with you?

True, Amazon has 1000 of them for $6. That specific company sells a lot of other labels for medical use too if you want some more variety in life.

Looks like modern high performance reflective tape on flat front glasses. I wonder how well it would work with some Reflexite on wayfarers or something like this.

It's easy enough to add some grip tape near the nose of each stair. It gives much better traction when you're in socks, and it makes it easier to see the edge of each step.

Great list! Adding QOL/bling improvements to games is definitely one of my favorite aspects of the hobby.

Some of my personal favorite add-ons:

  • Vinyl tape: Reusable, cheap, adds zero bulk to stacks of cards. (Edit: Damn, when I bought the tape it was $3.94. Now it's $10.13. But there are 1.5" rolls from the same manufacturer for $3.29)

  • Uberstax: Highly customizable modular plastic pieces especially useful for large hands of cards (Gloomhaven) and card markets (Argent: The Consortium). Not cheap though.

  • Stickers: Building on a post here a long time ago where winners would sign the box lids, we started buying stickers to go alongside the signatures.

u/cmagnuson · 9 pointsr/boostedboards

While the technical details of this law are super lame, riding an electric board was also illegal before AB-604. I don't think the introduction AB-604 in 2016 changed anything for Boosted riders since Boosted doesn't sell a board anywhere near 1000W.

My local cops have acknowledged me on my board while riding in the street countless times without pulling me over. If I ever were pulled over for riding an illegal board, I would explain all of the steps I've taken to ride as safely as possible:

  • Always riding within the speed limit.
  • Always riding in a bike lane when possible.
  • Always using hand signals when I make turns.
  • Always wearing a helmet and obeying traffic and pedestrian laws.
  • Always using a white headlight, red tail light, and reflective tape on the edges to make me visible at night from all directions.

Hopefully an explanation of how respectful I am of laws and safety would sway the officer. However, I realize that if a cop is a big enough dick to pull me over on my skateboard, they're probably not going to be considerate in any way.

Fair enough.

FAQ from a sign maker.

Road signs you can buy on Amazon

From the Virginia DOT. The relevant part is at the bottom of the page.

I'm sure there are other pages as well, but this came up first. Both the DOT page and the sign maker's page specify that the sign must be installed on private property only.

I have quite a bit of experience with retroreflective material. You don't need to worry about IR wavelengths as all visible light retroreflectors (generally beads or corner cubes) will work (almost) just as well for near infrared wavelengths. You can buy some paints that have some retroreflective beads in it, but they're not remotely strong enough to really do what you want. Most of the beads are totally coated with paint, so you end up with really poor coverage. You could buy some retroreflective beads and glue them onto your arrows (lying right at the surface of the glue), but unless you did a lot of experimentation, I'm guessing the durability would be really disappointing. The absolute best retroreflectors are corner cubes, but they need an air gap meaning that small regions have to be sealed all the way around the edges to prevent water ingress. It's not impossible, but again, you'll be fiddling with details that you shouldn't have to.Here's an example of this product. https://www.amazon.com/TapeCase-3430-0-5in-White-Reflective/dp/B007Y7I1LWNote the grey pattern that seals the shiny regions to keep water out. Everywhere you cut the seal, water will defeat the reflectivity. What you really want is a beaded retroreflector, preferably with a silver backing to increase the reflection. Look for a uniform look (with no seal pattern). You can get different colors, but white will always reflect most strongly (and avoid blue and green for sure if you want to use IR)

https://www.amazon.com/3M-Scotchlite-Reflective-Silver-36-Inch/dp/B000BQSY6K

Even the smallest sliver of this tape will reflect back to the light's source, although I don't know if this particular tape is thin enough and the adhesive strong enough to really pull down on a tightly curved shaft. Honestly, I'd stick it down with some epoxy or superglue if it didn't obviously conform.

I've had some of this tape (or a similar beaded version) on my bicycling shoes for years. Bits have rubbed off and it looks ragged since I heavily use the toes and heals to push and pull on things, but I've been really impressed that where I didn't actually rub it, it has stayed on.

FULL DISCLOSURE -- I work for 3M. I don't get paid to post on social media, but I am required to disclose my employment when I discuss 3M products so here's my 3M throwaway. There are other 3M and non 3M retroreflective options out there you should consider. I honestly just picked the first two products on Amazon that showed up on my Google search (and to be fair, my Google search probably knows I sometimes look for 3M products).

[EDIT] One more note -- using IR is really weird in this application. Retroreflective material will shoot light back at the source, so it'll flash brightly whether you're using IR or visible light. Honestly, unless you're being chased by zombies, I'd just use a bright flashlight to look for things tagged with retroreflective material. If you don't have a ridiculously powerful flashlight powered by lithium ion cells, go over to /r/flashlight and they'll sort you out.

Oh maaan, well Shambs was actually my first ever... everything. First rave, first festival, first trip, first time experiencing EDM. My friends took me under their wing (they have a tradition of spoiling a newbie every year) so I mostly followed them around. Dirtmonkey was memorable AF, I danced around and put for rectal use only stickers on everybody's totem that was there. Pigeon Hole's sunday night set was awesome (despite them being a fill-in). Boogie T was unreal, we just sat at the front of the Pagoda and let PK fuck us up haha. Neon Steve was super rad cause I got to go on stage, BTSM was one of the few artists I was familiar with PRIOR to shams, and honestly I discovered Rezz and fell in love with her! I'm lowkey bummed I missed Dimond Saints and Whipped Cream tho. Overall, 12/10 experience. Changed my life. I will absolutely be there next time with much much much more appreciation for the artists now that I'm more familiar with them and loving the music.

I'm torn between the duality of vanity and functionality. Most decent jackets have some reflective material on them unless they're total black out pieces of gear. I decided since I can't stand dayglo green or funky bright colors that I would mix a good portion of white in with my gear. I don't go pure white but if i have the option to buy a piece of gear that is black/white I go for it. For the pieces I couldn't get with white (like my current riding back pack) I bought 3M Scotchlite Tape and taped the hell out of it. I've also been hunting for a "Helmet Halo" which was a highly reflective fabric band you put around the bottom of your helmet (i don't like using adhesives on my helmets) but I believe it fell out of production.

I would like to introduce you to the wonders of helicopter tape. It prevents dings in surfaces you coat it with.

u/Sayobal · 6 pointsr/bicycling
u/jtinz · 5 pointsr/bicycling

It fucks up the aesthetics, adds weight and anything screwed on can rattle or come off. Especially when you ride a road bike with high tyre pressure on cobblestones.

That's why I replaced my reflectors with reflective tape. Especially the 3M foil is more visible than the typical plastic reflectors.

Practically no weight, won't come off and doesn't look as messy. There's even tape that's black in diffuse light. However, the reflection angle of that is very narrow. So it's a questionable compromise.

I've lived on 300 e here for 8 plus years now and one time a juggalo got too drunk partied and fell asleep in my car. I kicked him out and he came back 15 minutes later because he left his cell in my car.

If you want to do something crafty with your daughter, you could try to cut some of this 3m reflective tape into interesting shapes: http://www.amazon.com/3M-Scotchlite-Reflective-Silver-36-Inch/dp/B000BQRIV2/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1452464185&sr=8-1&keywords=3m+reflective+tape. My experience with that tape is that it is very reflective, but you'll want to replace it after a couple years.

If you want something reflective on the spokes, these work pretty well: http://www.amazon.com/Lightweights-Power-Reflectors-Wheels-86-Piece/dp/B002KYFWQ6/ref=sr_1_4?ie=UTF8&qid=1452464201&sr=8-4&keywords=reflective+bicycle+spoke

Also, Vespertine makes some reflective flower pins and such. My wife has one, so I can tell you they are definately very reflective, but they are kind of silly expensive: http://shop.vespertinenyc.com/category/jewelry. I'm not sure exactly where I can just get a sheet of whatever they are made of to make my own stuff.

For some labeling fun that's more legal, may I suggest "For rectal use only" stickers?

They're smaller, so they're fun to put on screwdrivers, remotes, etc

u/Gixug · 5 pointsr/bicycling

We're bike brothers! I have the exact same bike. :)

Just a note, the paint will scuff around the areas where the black cable routing rubs against the white paint. I'd get a roll of helicopter tape and put some strips right under those spots.

I also recommend ditching the white tires and the white bar tape. That was one of the first things I did because after about two rides, they're both completely grey.

Congrats on the bike! You obviously have excellent taste. ;)

u/thrway1312 · 4 pointsr/Games

IIRC any highly reflective material will suffice, e.g. something like this

u/sdphoto35 · 4 pointsr/Bushcraft

Just learned a great trick not to long ago. Putting some reflective tape will help you find things even in daylight and work amazing at night in camp. Helped me find my knife already and I put some on my tarp lines so I don't trip on them after a late night bathroom break. Got mine at the auto store.

> I guess we just don’t dispense?

You start switching to these stickers.

u/PotatosAreDelicious · 4 pointsr/motorcycles

It's very simple. Get something like this and then this for the smaller stripe.
You could do it without a clear coat but the clear coat will make it more resistant to pealing/chipping/more permanent. If you do decide to do a clear coat it's not coming off unless you sand the clear coat and your paint off.
Most helmets/bikes come like this from the factory with their vinyl stickers etc placed on and then just clear coated over.

> Splice them into your trailer wiring

That's what I did. I went up about 4" from the 7-pin plug, cut the necessary wires, used uninsulated butt connectors with a closed-barrel crimper and adhesive-lined heat shrink to splice in a 6-pin Deutsch DT connector pigtail, then built my own wiring harness that plugs into the Deutsch connector and ran it up to the headache rack.

Went with the 6-pin Deutsch connector since I only needed 5 of the 7 wires (LT, RT, Tail, Backup, and Ground) and 5-pin Deutsch connectors aren't available. Deutsch DT connectors are frequently used in the automotive aftermarket (probably more so than Delphi Weatherpack connectors). I know Rigid Industries uses them for their LED lights, and Smith Race Wire uses them for parts of their custom wiring harnesses.

Also, since you can only close-barrel crimp one end of the uninsulated butt connectors, I chose to close-barrel crimp the side that had only one wire (since closed-barrel crimping is more secure, and the one wire was looser in the connector) and used Channel Lock 909 Pliers to crimp the end with two wires.

Once you made your harness, make sure you slip it into some split wiring loom. Using a loom insertion tool makes quick work of that. Wrap the wiring loom with non-adhesive dry vinyl tape for a factory-finished look and to avoid a gooey, sticky mess in case you need to unwrap the wiring harness in the future.

Finally, a good wire stripper will save your hands a lot of fatigue compared to using a standard wire stripper that you have to always pull the wire through.

Do you have a light-colored jacket you always wear? Rather than a safety vest, just grab some super reflective tape and put it on your jacket, bike, helmet, panniers, etc. Definitely worth investing in a bright, rechargeable light set as well.

Spray & Forget moss removal should take care of the slipperyness and the Gator Grip Traction sticks very well. I've used both on outdoor deck stairs and haven't had them un-stick over the passing of a few years.

https://www.amazon.com/Yacker-Tracker-Noise-Monitor-Detector/dp/B001AZ2O2Q

u/IAMColonelFlaggAMA · 3 pointsr/AskLEO

If people are speeding, you and your neighbors should call your local police station and ask about traffic enforcement on your road. If they get enough calls, they'll probably send a car down to run traffic and slow people down.

If the speed limit is too high, go to your next town council meeting and try to get them to lower it or install more traffic control devices.

If you don't want to do that, I wouldn't put up anything other than one of these.

I know a few are saying to park near the back, but I actually park to the front and I've never had anyone hit my bike (knock on wood).

I know people can't see it, but yes, it gives them time to stop if they start to pull in. I've also thought about sticking one of these somewhere on my bike so I can throw it down after I park.

u/way2funni · 2 pointsr/cycling

Couple things to add for the shopping list: especially for the 3am part:

Safety Vest

Slap light for left ankle to identify your edge

Lights

About $25 for the above.

Rear mirror

Make sure the bike has the standard reflectors on the spokes, pedals, front and back as well.

Reflective tape if you are riding an all black or dark bike - wrap strips around your spokes, frame and seatpost

Some would say ALL THE ABOVE TOGETHER Is overkilling it and maybe it is all it takes is one semi-drunk who did a couple too many shots blasting down some rural road at 4am doing 90mph to end you.

Even just a glancing blow off the side of a big 4x4 mirror rig could fuck you up bad and NOW YOU'RE DOWN.

You're laying on the side (if you're lucky and didn't get hung up and dragged) of a rural road at 5am waiting for the next drunk to come along and finish the job.

This is a real concern.

Now if this happens and you are wearing dark clothes on a black bike with no reflectors they could end up hitting you before they ever see you especially when you add dark (limo) tinted windows + stereo blasting and subwoofers thumping.

Now add texting on the phone to the equation.

It's all over. You're roadkill.

You need to make yourself more than just a little visible. They need to see you from a fricken mile away. even if you are sprawled out in the street.

TIP: I use the slap light so they can see where the edge of me actually IS. I usually hang it on the left end of my handlebar - on my rearview mirror. Or on my left ankle so there is a light moving up and down along with pedal reflectors - that says 'dude on a bike up ahead'.

u/Adventurepew · 2 pointsr/MTB

tape everywhere that will rub on the bike, even top tubes . keeps the frame looking like new. prevents cable rub, and its clear and very hard to see.

your frame will be fine, stick a patch of tape over the area so it doesnt get worse.

u/Antranik · 2 pointsr/bicycling

I agree that the reflectors are a great idea. Here is some awesome reflective tape! you could put anywhere on your bike! The wheels or pedals are great spots because they are moving and will catch a drivers attention super fast. I agree that headlamps make for an excellent light! Wal-mart sells pretty good ones for $5. I recommend people in the market for one to get the small one that has ONE led and uses a small battery as opposed to multiple LED's and bigger batteries because that extra weight is very annoying on your forehead, but if it's a small one and light, it's very comfortable

If local laws permit, the 319 bridge over the river looks like a safer bet than the 153 due to its much wider shoulder. I didn't see any signs on the onramp prohibiting bikes on the highway, but check with the Department of Highways (or whatever its called in Tennessee) to be sure.

I suggest picking up front and rear lights ($25-30 should get you a basic set), and some sort of high visibility vest (like this or this). If you're riding after dark, some reflective tape on the bike would make you stand out in headlights.

Good luck, and stay safe.

u/Heeres_Johnny · 2 pointsr/homegym

I haven't run into that problem with my platform yet, but it's possible that you could get a stair traction strip like this and put on the surface of the platform under where your feet would normally go.

Another possibility would be to use some type of wood stair/sealer and mix in a small amount of fine grain sand with it to give the platform some texture? I'd lean more towards the first option though.

> Then they might contact a graphics shop or sign shop, and they may make one like this.

Stop signs are mostly standardized. You don't have some dude sitting there in design software drawing out letters. And it would surely be easier to just buy a sign than contact anyone.

I've also had quite a lot of fun with these

u/salient_green · 2 pointsr/ontario

I'm buying these and so should all of you.

u/VanillaPudding · 2 pointsr/AskLEO

I think you should purchase these and give them out.

Alongside active lights, passive Retro-reflective tape - buy a roll and stick it inside the wheel rims and along every low tube of the trailer. It will pop and light up for any car with their headlamps on.

u/ryaninwi · 2 pointsr/bicycling

I know some people that use helicopter tape on the area of their bikes that are subject to chainslap or cable rub. I don’t use it on my bikes, but the people I know that do like it.

u/Anondude1317 · 2 pointsr/BDSMcommunity

I don't reuse it but here ya go...

Sticks to itself but nothing else. Cheap, quick and comes in different widths.

You can get scotchlite tape to put on things, and there are many pieces of clothing (like a reflective vest) that incorporate it. Shirts, pants, shoes, etc.

u/PhDTotoro · 2 pointsr/tipofmytongue

There you go : Amazon link and you can make your own using this : Sound Detector

I have a zefal bike light attached to my backpack like so.

I was also going to get this reflective tape the other day to line the bottom of my helmet in, but then I decided that being able to go incagnito incognito (downtown chicago at night; cops and thugs) if I need to is better and that the light is enough for now.

u/Reconn · 2 pointsr/CalamariRaceTeam

I used this for my stuff. But its thin, so itd be a pain for tracing a decal out.

There are 2 inch versions that would be easier to use. Finding the color you want might be hard. Example 1, Example 2

It looks like plain electrical tape until you shine a light on it when its dark.

u/HARSHING_MY_MELLOW · 2 pointsr/FixedGearBicycle

> hard to find and buy in small quantities

http://www.amazon.com/3M-Scotchlite-Reflective-Silver-36-Inch/dp/B000BQRIV2 Amazon disagrees. There are plenty of color and size choices on there.

u/kryptoniterazor · 2 pointsr/synthdiy

Not sure what it is called, in faders I think it's a little more robust, probably silicone rubber. But most electrical tape is dielectric vinyl, which would probably work fine. Just search for some non-adhesive vinyl or cotton tape, (sometimes called "wiring harness tape"). Here's some "dry vinyl" tape on amazon.

Receiver hitch from minimania.com . Rack is very basic, this one:

https://smile.amazon.com/gp/product/B004QEKGA0

I added most of the red retroreflective tape and replaced some of the bolts with stainless eyebolts from the hardware store.

The straps go to the two attachment rings at the front of the trunk, up and over the trunk lid where I've protected the paint with some helicopter tape.

https://smile.amazon.com/gp/product/B000O6BQMG

The instructions for the receiver hitch said not to attach a cantilevered load like this without reinforcing with straps.

I don't have this thing on very often, but we're going camping tonight and it will be a lot easier to pack this way. I'll probably just have the cooler on it.

u/Shpadoinkles · 2 pointsr/running

I grabbed a running vest from Target (~15 bucks) and a pack of Retro Reflective Stickers from Amazon to really brighten me up.

You could try that^ I bought some and plastered my helmet with it. Seems to stick well. There's a reviewer who says it has stayed on their messenger bag and everything else he's put it on.

u/shlep · 2 pointsr/pics

I see these more and more where I live. It works because I automatically slow down when I see one, assuming there are kids around.

It's the 3M Scotchlite tape. 2" wide. I think I found it at my local Fred Meyer or Walmart. I've been sitting on this stuff for some time.

Or you could just order it from Amazon

u/insan3guy · 1 pointr/motorcycles

Not really what you asked for, but you can try putting a whole bunch of retroreflective tape on a helmet. That way, you get to pick a helmet based on other features like comfort/face shield.

u/hoaxymore · 1 pointr/motorcycles

Here we are required to have reflective tape on the back of our helmets. I guess you could write a short message with it, like "BACK OFF" (I for one made a big cross with it on the back. Because it seems to me to be more noticeable than the standard single line)

I don't want to sound like your mom or anything butt it might be worth getting some black reflective tape so people see you better at night. I have an all black bike and when me and my father swapped bikes at night if you were viewing him from the side or even quartering he was pretty damn invisible. Just speaking from experience.

Stuff like this.

u/mikeytown2 · 1 pointr/photography

Stencil covered in a retro reflective material will do it. Would need a low power flash zoomed in to limit spil, have the flash below the lens aiming slightly up so the light doesn't spill; that would cover the glowing stick figure. Then take the flash and hit the man from the different angles. Keep camera on tripod.

They have those here in all the school crossing walks during school hours. Our neighbor that we tailgate sporting events with has two that we put up in our area when we camp, cause we have the kiddies and pets running around. You can get them on Amazon.

These are exactly what I have on my spokes, they work really well. I also took the extra hub stickers and put them on my helmet instead.

Also in auto parts stores or paint stores (interestingly) or the corresponding departments of a larger store, you can find reflective tape. So far I've found white and red. I also usually find it right next to an identically sized green tape, but that one's not reflective, so don't fall for it. It'll be about two inches wide and not that long, it's kind of expensive. like this (though what I found wasn't that expensive)

If you cut it half as wide you can put it down the smaller parts of your frame (such as the chain guide), on pedal cranks, strips on your helmet, on any chain/cog guards, and if you really have steady and accurate fingers, around your spokes just like the Light weights stickers. Use full-width strips to make rings on the fuller parts of your frame.

I even took a leftover bit of the reflective tape and put it on the vinyl tube of my hydration pack, which hangs from the right strap. When I tuck it up into the left strap, I have a perfectly symmetrical reflective line across my chest.

I suppose if you don't mind wasting a whole lot of tape, or using a bunch of odd leftover scraps, you could lay the tape over the divots in your helmet and use a razor blade to cut out exactly the elliptical shape that's concave relative to the convex overall shape of your helmet. That would be cool to see. I don't have the guts yet.

The tapes can often be more reflective than the cheapo reflectors that come with your bike, so it's also not at all a bad idea to cover those surfaces as well.

Finally there' s the biggest amount of coverage you could possibly get, cover your frame. Or less extreme but definitely beyond the norm, buy fenders and cover those.

u/gambiter · 1 pointr/exjw

This has done the trick for me. At this point, my fade is complete, and I've realized I don't even care if they come to my house... but I've literally seen them walk up, see the sign (above the doorbell) and turn and walk away. It's pretty great.

u/ReyRey5280 · 1 pointr/bicycling

Helicoptor tape on amazon $25 looks solid, but kind of pricey when I only need about 6 square inches tops and I cant think of anything else I'd use it for.

u/hamster_sword · 1 pointr/mechanical_gifs
u/DatumPirate · 1 pointr/motorcycles

You could also add some reflective tape to your helmet if you already have one. Won't be noticeable during the day like a high-vis color, but it really helps at night.

I got one of these signs, and it might just be coincidence, but since I put it up a couple months ago, I have had ZERO uninvited people come to my door, where before I'd have third-party energy shillers/clean water people/public radio fundraisers/etc at least a couple times a month (and that was just during non-business hours when I happened to be home).
