I probably wouldn't eat as much salad as I do if I had to buy my own dressing. Home made is so much better unless you're willing drop more money on premium store bought stuff. Here are some recipes I keep on standard rotation.

  • Maui onion dressing: I use any kind of onion--doesn't have to be maui

  • Ranch. Kicks the ass of store bought ranch. Instead of 1 cup mayo and half cup sourcream, I do 1/2 cup each of mayo, sour cream and soured milk. (you can make soured milk by taking a 1/2 cup measure, pouring in 1tsp vinegar or lemon, and filling the rest with 2% or whole milk).

  • Lemon balsamic vinegarete.

One of these dressings is guaranteed to be in my fridge at any given time. Maybe even two of them. They're all really good.

Once you've gotten familiar with these, it's time to branch out. Basically if I'm feeling like a new dressing, I just go to All Recipes and search dressings with high ratings. Good salad dressing is the key to good salads. If I don't have good dressing, they just become a chore to eat.

Another tip that I can give you to give salads more eatability is to put delicious, non-vegetable things on them. I put the following on my salads frequently:

  • Pulled chicken: Take like 3 chicken breasts, thawed, and salt/pepper them. Next, make any spice mixture you want (I do an Italian herbs blend, or you could just use italian dressing packet mix) and sprinkle it on the breasts. Next, toss the breats in vegetable oil and put in a pan. Splash some apple cider vinegar on the breasts, and bake them in a 350 oven for 30-40 minutes. Pull apart with two forks. Put that shit on a salad and yum.

  • Crumbled up Falafel. This with maui onion dressing on a salad is one of my favorite salads. So hearty, and with the warm falafel, it feels like a meal. I bake my falafels so it's healthier. IMO they are better than fried.

  • Black Bean Burgers. Same idea as the falafels. Just crumbe them up onto a salad.

Another thing I like to do is make taco salads. Make up some of this easy as hell salsa and put it on a salad along with some black beans, sliced avocado, and grated cheddar cheese. If you want to get fancy, stick a large tortilla in the oven beforehand until it's crispy and build your salad on that. Super good. (A note on the salsa: it takes more salt than it seems. Go with 1 tsp. I also usually add about 1.5 tsp of brown sugar, but that's personal preference.

Last piece of advice. Get yoself a salad spinner. They get the water off your rinsed vegetables so that your salad isn't soggy. I have the one I linked and a fancier, more expensive one as well. The fancier one is nicer, but not that much nicer. IMO this one works great.

A 5 minute soak in very cold water usually does the trick. A salad spinner makes it hassle free.

I found one that just fits my underwires, and it's smaller than some ive seen (and I only do 1 bra at a time) - there definitely are some out that that will work - might even want to check Amazon (make sure you check product dimensions).

edit: Here's a salad spinner with 10.5" diameter on Amazon

We have this one

We've had it for a few years and probably use it 2-7 times a week (we get a CSA with a ton of unwashed greens). Its nice because it hold a lot and doesn't have anything in the middle. It's showing no signs of slowing down.

My one complaint is that you may need to stop it and drain the water a few times on really wet stuff, but no big deal.

I'm trying to get healthy, and getting a salad spinner is atop my list. I really like salad, but won't eat it without washing it, which always leaves it feeling soggy and a little gross. It gets tiresome to have to wash small batches of lettuce every time I go for a salad, so a salad spinner would make it easier to make larger batches without the grossness.

Thanks of the contest! Conviviality!

I rinse and scrub them a bit by hand but then put them in one of those “salad spinner” things to spin the water off.

This time I used the stuff in the tub so I didn't wash it.

When I buy it unwashed I do a two-step process: Wash and spin in a salad spinner and get as much water off as I can that way. Then, I transfer it to a Salad Sac --basically a terry cloth bag with a drawstring that you can swing around to dry your greens. It's as ridiculous and fun as it sounds, and it actually works! I've kept spinach and even herbs like cilantro dried this way for 5-6 days in the fridge with minimal wilting.

I might have a solution for you because I was thinking EXACTLY the same thing:

http://www.amazon.co.uk/Zyliss-Smart-Touch-Salad-Spinner/dp/B0015S0AK6/ref=sr_1_10?ie=UTF8&qid=1407235469&sr=8-10&keywords=salad+spinner

Get some custom foam made with holes so that you can put the bottles in there and then into the basket.

I think everyone could use a salad spinner.

Trying to eat healthier. This portion controlled salad dressing bottle would be awesome. It's $7.38 and not an add-on. For future reference filleritem.com
