(Part 2) Best seasonal lighting according to redditors

They have fairy lights in them (SO appropriately named). The battery/switch to turn them on is hidden under the hats so I can turn them on easier/change the battery if needed.

I made a similar costume and used these.

For a costume like this you don't want LED's. You want EL Wire

Okay. Essentially, you're gonna want to make a template the size of however big you want the font to be (keep in mind the size of the plywood). Why? You're gonna want to draft out each entry and exit of the wire. Newsprint should do lovely.

Next up: Plywood. Mine's about 34×14.5". It's really up to y'all smokin' sexy stylish demons how big you want yours cut. Once you cut it, paint it. Two coats.

Once again, trace out the letters onto the plywood once the paint's fully dried, this will help as you start laying down the wire with super glue since this is a very curvy sign (I do recommend using a small brush over the traced lines). Mark the entries and exits again onto the plywood and drill holes the same width as the wire, roughly around 2mm.

I hope you didn't have much plans for the rest of the day, so get comfy. Now comes the threading and glueing of the wire. Thread the wire through the first hole and pull all the way through (tape the battery pack to the back of the board to make it easier to continue). Onto the fun part, brush a dash of super glue onto the traced path of the wire (not too thin or thick) and hold the wire in place until it sets, repeat this all along the traced curve until you hit an exit. Pull the wire through and thread into the next entry, making sure it's free of any knots, and repeat.

I actually really love battery powered LED christmas light strings. I've found them at stores like Fred Meyers as well as on Amazon.... They're decently bright, super-portable, and I haven't had as many problems with connections as I have had with el-wire. That being said, it's fun to do a mix of el-wire and LED christmas lights...

Detolf is cheaper but fits less figures. This bookshelf with the doors and glass shelf's costed around $300 back in 2016.

And I'd recommend using some scotch or painting tape with a fifteen foot string to trace out the path you want to glue down. It will make it much easier, but it does take a while.

Also, use gel glue. It's shock/water proof. I'd recommend 2 of those if you're using a full face helmet

I just went to Amazon and bought mini LED strip lights and glued them into the existing hood. They come in a huge variety of sizes, so just choose some that you can arrange in what you have.

Used these for my jacket last year. The packs fairly small!

Here's the LED strip, but pretty much any RGB LED strip will work.

The bulb on the other side of the room is a Lifx which is a kickstarted alternate to the Phillips Hue system. I'd recommend getting a Hue over a Lifx though - the lifx app is way under developed and still doesn't have some of the features promised in the kickstarter

Those are 3528 LEDs, a strip of 5050 RGB like this will perform much better. For 5050, each chip has 3 LEDs, one of each color. The 3528 has a seperate color for each chip. This means the 5050 is ~3 times as bright and will offer better whites as the colors are less spread out.

So, here is what I did. First time burner. I ordered a bunch of EL Wire off of Amazon for cheap (exact pack I got: http://www.amazon.com/Neon-Glowing-Strobing-Electroluminescent-Wires/dp/B003J9BD50/ref=sr_1_4?ie=UTF8&qid=1312231941&sr=8-4), and then went through the womens sections in a bunch of different stores. Why Women's? Because, for some reason, their clothes are more fun. At Old Navy I got an XXL Womens Turtleneck and a damaged v-neckish jacket thing. I turned the Jacket into a vest. I got 3/4 of a yard of Fur from Jo Anns, took some old pants, turned them into fur pants with fabric glue (It's really easy, honestly. Cut some fur off the yard, put glue on it, put on pants). And then, I went to Goodwill and got some more womens clothing... A long Zebra jacket that I'm gonna put EL Wire on, a small fur vest, and some white beach pants.

My outfits, basically, are -

All White fur Pants + Turtle neck + Fur Vest = Nighttime Party time
Zebra Print Jacket + Fur Pants = Zesty Night Funtastic Bombastic
Jacket-turned Vest + Sleeves from it on legs = Halfnaked Daytime Fun
Beach Pants + Jacket turned Vest = Slammin Not-naked daytime Adventuretime

I just made up those names on the spot... but you get the picture. It's pretty easy. I put the leftover fur on my bike, and on my goggles, and I still have some left. I think I'll just put it randomly on some clothes. I use the EL Wire + safety pins to highlight my clothes.

Double edit: Ask your female friends if you can raid their closets for burning man gear. Chances are, if your friends are awesome, they'll get totally excited and give you a bunch of ridiculous shit. Also, they'll probably want to get drunk and dress you up in stupid shit. It's win-win. Get out of your comfort zone! I did. It's my first burn, FUCK IT!

I agree with others about finding a suitable camp before night fall. Also to help with the darkness, you can bring LED lights or a small backpack lantern. I have the Black Diamond Apollo and highly recommend it. Tiny enough to stash in a side pocket and the battery has lasted me a few nights on low light.

I think this will take more custom work than you think it will. This is the datasheet for the ICs in that LED strip, you will need a DMX decoder that will send the proper data stream over the bus. It would not be difficult with something like an Arduino if you have experience in that sort of thing, but the hard part then would be getting the Arduino to decode the DMX for each pixel.

The DMX decoder you linked only outputs PWM, so it will not work for those LEDs.

Edit: What WILL work is if you get a standard RGB LED strip like this one, then that decoder will work with one channel per color (which it seems is how it was intended to work to begin with).

I rock a suit jacket every year with battery powered christmas LEDs. lasts all week, looks great, mad complements, and easy (all you gotta do is sew em in between the lining and the outside). I have started to branch out by painting voodoo iconography, sewing extra patches/mourning patches, and even made my own fur coat (with xmas led lights all over it)

Usually i go with something like this but believe me, AA packs are much easier and lighter than Ds, and are easier to get rechargeables. A few of my old suits had like 100 light strings in them, but that was a shit ton of sewing for not much more reward, so my suit this time will be going to probably be something like this.

Failures sometimes happen but usually after about 5 months of use beyond the burn. Multiple strings are a good contingency, and I am starting to look into AA powered 5050 strings.

For clarification, I make a new Jacket every year, usually in a theme like voodoo, day of the dead, ect. New one every year, as part of the ritual.
Using multiple small strings helps deal with a failure by still providing light if one goes dead.

I also add some reflective fabric on my jacket/pants just to add to visibility.

These are the lights I used in my Eskimo Wide 1 inferno. I wired up a power box with 4 switches and put a strip on each pole. They are nice and bright when they are all on but the switches allow me to turn them on individually.

The battery should have a high amp-hour rating. Basically a 100 amp hour battery will supply a 1 amp load for 100 hours OR it will supply 100 amps for 1 hour.

Figure out the continuous power draw from your light system [for instance if the LEDs draw 10 amps at 12 volts, a 100 amp hour battery will last 10 hours at that load]. LEDs are pretty efficient you might get more life than in my example.

Next you will want a 12 volt LED controller that you will need to wire the + & - terminals of the battery to. What needs to be considered here is the fact that car batteries actually put out about 14 volts when fully charged. Now, 2 volts may not make a big difference but you want to make sure the LED controller will be happy with an extra 2 volts going through it. My guess is that you will be fine but just an FYI.

I have a bunch of led strips running on homebridge. I just bought generic led strips (rgbw and rgbww) and then bought a WiFi controller and power supply. Then I installed the magichome homebridge plugin. They work amazingly well. I even have fairy lights using one of those rgbw controllers (by just connecting line and neutral).

Really easy and cheap! I use this USB one which is perfect for sticking to the back of displays which gives off a glow effect like in this setup. Both my TV an monitor have USB which means it turns on and off with the display.

the copper wire in between the lights is so thin that they are way less noticeable (sometimes not noticeable at all depending on your aperature)

Yeah I was thinking of getting these for behind my desk and these for inside my case. The RGB ones can be programmed for new colors and different patterns and they arent that expensive. And the ones for inside the case are dirt cheap. Just got a ssd a month ago and its awesome!!

I used 9' lengths for the wheels. The battery pack for the 9' lengths is only 2 AAs. When I zip tied the on, I tried to get the battery back as close to the hub as possible, so it wouldn't offset the rolling weight of my tires.

This is the exact wire I used. In the end, I used 2 15' lengths, and 3 9's lengths. The reviews are pretty accurate. I honestly didn't notice the humming once I was actually moving and on the road. No one who rode near me could hear it. I pointed it out once and everyone said they hadn't even noticed it.

I don't actually know, it was just an example of the types of things you can find out there. Amazon has them as well. EL Panel and EL Wire. Though in that case you would need to do a bit of splicing and soldering to make it run off of one battery pack.

EL stands for Electro-Luminescent, meaning when you run a current through the material it gives off light.

Not OP, but have done some vehicle/trailer lighting/wiring before.

Working with 12V DC is relatively safe, just make sure not to short the ends. You can, of course, disconnect the battery if you're worried about it (if you're not worried about it, just leave the outside light switch off or find the fuse that goes to it and flip it off). I've wired up a good bit of stuff in 12VDC with it live and haven't ever been shocked, though that's not to say there isn't risk. At a minimum I'd recommend shutting off the light switch.

Last year we brought this Zinka sunblock and it was a lot of fun... everyone wants to stay protected from the sun and have fun! They don't seem to have any available for prime, but it's worth it.

or you could go for a nighttime fun thing and get some El wire... totally portable and has different flash settings. Just bring extra batteries! They are fun to watch/wear and make you stand out at night with your group so you can find each other better. Just wrap the wire around yourself, your hat, you bag.. whatever and turn it on!

A piece of PVC pipe, some LED strips or EL Wire zip tied around it in a spiral and there ya go. You could make something like that in 20 minutes.

To do it on the cheap and easy, order these, each strand is 9ft long. Take the battery pack to Home Depot and find a 10ft length of PVC that it will fit inside of, probably 1-1/4" or 1-1/2" and get a couple end caps.

Drill a hole in the end caps and stuff the battery packs inside each end, run the EL Wire out the hold and around the pole. Zip tie in place and there ya go.

Not fancy or anything, but dead simple and cheap. LED strips would be brighter.

An LED strip like this rigged to a 12v power supply, batteries stuffed into the PVC would work and be a lot brighter. Plus you'd have a remote for changing the colors.

I dont know how this guy did it but you could use something like this with a controller like this. You could use amazing goop or something similar to attach them to the board. The glue on the led strips is very poor. After that, all you need is a 12v power supply and a connector to the RGB controller. I have a lot of lipo batteries from RC stuff so that is what I would use for power. I would try a 1000 mah 3s for starters and either velcro it to the binding or my pants leg. for connectors I use JST.

I wouldn't recommend them, there's much better alternatives.

After you mentioned about the red channel maybe not being as bright. I actually tested that and you were correct. Red is about 70% as bright as green and blue. This might account for the bad colour blending.

Both controllers produce the same wrong colours so I am beginning to think it is the led strip.

A typical 60 LED/meter strip runs on 12V and draws about 4 Watts/meter. A battery of (8x) AA cells or (3x) 18650 cells will make about 12V and 30Wh. So one meter of LED strip will run for about 7.5 hours (30Wh/4W). Two meters of the LED strip would run for half that time, and so on.

For those pining for these (myself included!) you can make them yourself using a technique like the one they show here. The girls use T90 wire but honestly you could probably get away with coat hangers or any 14+ gauge electrical wire.

I've been looking into lights for my mirror too. I've been leaning towards something like this as it's flat, easy to install, bright, and not very expensive. There's tons of these strip light sets on amazon, just make sure as you're scrolling through to read reviews and pick up an adapter (the one I've linked actually comes with one). The one I've linked is also dimmable!

I use this inside my case. It comes with mounting hardware making it really easy to route however you want. It also has 3 brightness levels and an on/off switch.

For backlighting behind my monitors/desk, I use something like this. I typically only use a single color, but I opted for a version with color changing LEDs. The adhesive on these things sucks, so if you purchase one, I suggest getting some of these and some zipties to mount it.

They're very inexpensive and typically are installed by plugging them into a molex power connector off your PSU then slapping them wherever you want them in the case.

also fyi, the asus aura feature didnt need specialty led kits, it works with standard 5050 rgb led strips that have a max power usage of 12v 2a. if it doesnt work the way you want it to then i would just return it and go with something like this instead

I took the EL panel and applied a vinyl sticker I custom cut on a Cricut machine, then hot glued the panel to the bag. The EL wires on the bag were attached using fishing string, sewn on every few inches. Same with the LEDs, every few inches I attached them to the arm straps using fishing string and a needle. Not much else to explain, so any more questions feel free to comment or DM me. They we're just two, reasonably cheap RGB LED Strips from Amazon LINK

They're great. Plug in via USB to my USB hub. Loads of colours, plenty of brightness settings, lots of modes such as solid colour, flashing, breathing effects etc. Only downside was the adhesive on the back but, pretty much all led strips suffer this so, make sure you have the means to stick it on securely.

As for how they're position - one is on the underside pointed at the floor, the other is on the back of the desk pointing at the wall.

I would suggest dangling the string vertically. use fishing wire to attach it to the threads.

There are molex to LED adapters, but you can only choose one color.

Also this exists, not sure how it gets power.

Tbh, I might try and return these, the cables are a bit too short for to reach the floor from the top of the detolf. If the cables were about 5-7 inches longer, these would be perfect for a detolf.

It was definitely a fun project.

• The LEDs are individually addressable like a SPI.This means that instead of needing 300 connections to 300 ports we attached the LEDs in a serial strand and each LED's address is just its number. So to change the colour of the 10th light we load the colour at the address of 10 and then 'render' the entire string. We used this library ( https://github.com/jgarff/rpi_ws281x )
  
  
• We had a separate power supply for the LEDs. While it was possible to briefly power the entire strand (300 LEDs) from a single Raspberry the brightness wasn't what we wanted and we were afraid we would draw far too much power and burn out the RaspberryPi.
  
  
• The wiring diagram is relatively simple, I'll ask if I can get it from the guy who was responsible for the wiring. I'll also look into seeing if I can get permission to release the source code.
  
  
• Our resolution for both cameras was 160x120 which we polled at 5Hz. Given more time and in the future, we may look into a different CV library to make it more responsive.

You’d be better off not using an inverter, since you’d be going DC > AC > DC.
If you bought something like I’ve linked, you can look at the sticker on the plug when it arrives to see its output, and then connect up however many batteries in series to match.
Then just chop the cable and use some croc clips or something to connect it all up
