Budget shoes are definitely not high quality. A good idea would be to find a middle ground shoe such as a brogue cap toe from Cole Haan or a Florsheim oxford, if possible.

There's not a whole lot to go on here, what is your goal? Some people would recommend the sidebar, but personally I think it's a bit much and it tends to homogenize how some people look.

I would say, start off with finding some well-fitting casual clothes. Some white t-shirts, a pair of nice blue jeans (Try Levi's, 511's or 513's. Or spend a little more and get something nicer, like Second Narrow or 3sixteen.), and most importantly some footwear would be a good start.

For footwear, I'd recommend a pair of sneakers. What you get is up to you. Some recommendations I would make would be:

Vans sk8-hi's

Vans Old Skools

Adidas Stan Smiths

Air Force Ones

I'd also suggest a pair of boots, but it might be out of your price range. I'm a fan of black boots, although most people on this subreddit would recommend brown ones. Some nice boots to start off with would be:

Thorogoods (the plain toe is nice as well)

Chippewas

Clarks, although personally I would recommend you get Sand or Oakwood instead of "beeswax". The beeswax ones do not age well, and they are kind of boring.

Doc Martens I am a huge fan of this model in particular

Finally, I would recommend a black jacket to start you off with. What you get is up to you. It could be a bomber, a trucker, a varsity, a parka, an m-65, or whatever. An olive jacket would also be good, though maybe not as cool.

Other than that, it's hard to give you recommendations without knowing what you like.

Don't cut your hair.

(also, your face reminds me a little bit of The Arm, if he was less menacing.)

Well, what type of boot you want? There's the [Chippewa Apache Lacer that's quite popular.] (http://www.amazon.com/Chippewa-20065-Handcrafted-Lace-Up-Chocolate/dp/B0036VN8N6/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1370619118&sr=8-1&keywords=chippewa+gq) Near $100 depending on your size. Then the ever-prominent Clark's Desert Boot. Well under $100.

Or if you're wanting more dressy, JCPenney's wingtip boot gets suprisingly good marks despite its low price. No link because it's not online, but I've seen it roaming around my local store.

These are all pretty popular MFA selections and safe bets. Don't forget if you order from Amazon to sign up for there shoe mailing list and you'll get a 20% off code. Note you can create a throwaway email & amazon account and get a new code mailed to you if you've already used this once.

PS. Yes you can wear brown boots with a blue shirt. Blue (especially navy) is the most flexible color of the rainbow.

If this is the clarks desert boots you are talking about, then it's being sold at 99.98 at Amazon without any specific sale. They've gone as low as 70 ish.

I agree with this, something like Red Wing moc toes

Shoes

Sneakers/Casual Shoes – Going to be the biggest option here as sneakers are going to be the most useful for teens.

  • CanvasVans Authentic - $40 Vans stores also always have authentics if you can’t get your size online. True-White is the best color here. Other options are Converse Chuck Taylors - $50 – go for the Optical White and Jack Purcells - $60 – White/White colorway.

  • Skate shoes – Tread very carefully here (pun completely intended), the thinner the better, stay the hell away from thick bulky skate shoes. Some examples: Nike SB Janoski - $70-110 – great option, also check out the customizable ones if you’re ok paying a little more Adidas Campus Vulc - $50-75 and Campus 2 - $50-75

  • Espadrilles - $28-45 – Good summer casual footwear.

  • Vans C&L 59 – Good casual shoe with a small addition of leather.

    Leather shoes

  • Sperry A/O - $80 – best colors are Sahara, Classic Brown, and Navy. Better to wear with shorts as a whole. Stay away from boat shoe/sneaker hybrids.

  • CDBs - $80 – You better know them. I refuse to say anything much about them because I see them so often I’ve grown quite a distaste for them. They are still a great option and very versatile.

  • Bucks Bass Buckingham - $80 – Awesome shoes. Best colors are going to be taupe suede (referred to as “dirty bucks”) or white. Make sure to let them get dirty from wear and they’ll look even better.

  • Dress Shoes – Check MFA’s Shoe Guide for a much more thorough guide. I would stick to a black cap-toe, a brown brogue or wingtip, and maybe loafers; remember, chances are you won’t need them often and you will have plenty of time for formalwear the rest of your life.

    ***

    To Wrap it Up

    Try to build your wardrobe
slowly. Don’t rush it, or as you learn more, you will end up with a lot of pieces that you realize were bad purchases and are 1) ugly, 2) don’t fit, or 3) aren’t versatile at all. You should also take it slow so you don’t blow the sparse amount of money you likely have.

    Good big brand stores**

  • Uniqlo – Online store recently added. MFA’s lovechild for cheap, pretty well-made, well-fitting clothing.

  • H&M – Better in store options than online. Very cheap, not well made, and probably won’t last too long.

  • Target – Has good options on a budget. Check out what Primer has to say on Target.

  • Gap – Decent quality and frequent sales. Gap has been stepping up their game recently and has been offering better clothes.

  • Old Navy – Similar to Gap, but generally not as good. Quality is slightly below that of Gap’s.

One word: fashion. Different field of fashion, but open up any GQ mag and you'll see ordinary leather combat boots that are $700+. Street fashion is no different. Here is a pair of Adidas Yeezy 350s in my size for $1,700: They're not made any better than any other casual shoe, but they are in demand for their exclusivity.

What it boils down to is simple economics: if the demand is high, so is the price. So when a product or company in the fashion industry convinces the target audience that the item in question is cool, exclusive, or ahead of the curve, it raises the interest and subsequent demand. Supreme has done this by making inroads with the social media modeling scene, street scene, and underground fashion scene. They target city and metro-area people aged ~18-30~ who are likely more receptive to streetwear than to high fashion offerings from a Gucci or Burberry.

I mean, this is a pretty radical opinion here than I'm sure no one else has ever voiced, but there are these shoes called "Clark Desert Boots" that are kinda nifty:

http://www.amazon.com/Clarks-Originals-Mens-Desert-Beeswax/dp/B000WU8SBG/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1346872697&sr=8-1&keywords=clark+desert+boots

u/AG_SYSTEMS · 8 pointsr/frugalmalefashion

Clarks Desert Boots are always a great choice for dark jeans. I'd try not to spend more than $80 on a pair, though. Amazon might have your size/color at a good price.

How long is "a good amount"? Are you doing work outside or do you just have a long commute? That being said, I doubt there would be any dress boots that could stand up to the wear and tear of being outside in winter weather constantly, since that's not what they are made for. Something like the Chippewa Apache would be more suited to your description and price range, but they are obviously not very professional looking.

u/TripleVision · 6 pointsr/frugalmalefashion

I don't trust Express quality shoes. If you want something similar, try Thorogoods. More expensive, but for $110 (after 20% off coupon), you get Goodyear welting and a full grain leather upper. Not to mention that both the leather and shoe are made in the US.

u/thomaspaine · 6 pointsr/malefashionadvice
  1. Docs are combat/work boots and hence work well with certain types of fits and styles. Mainly 'edgier' ones like punk, skinhead, fits involving black skinny jeans, etc. Personally I think most docs look bad except for the classics: black or oxblood 1460s or 1490s. I've seen people pull off 1461s as a cheaper alternative to black postmans but again, it works best with a certain style. Docs, especially oxblood docs, can carry negative social connotations if you happen to be a bald white male. Brown docs look bizarre to me, especially the pebbled leather ones you've picked. I associate brown boots with a more country style, whereas docs are essentially combat boots so they look weird in brown.

  2. Made in China Docs use corrected grain leather, it's not super great, the vintage Made in England ones use a nicer full grain leather. As far as I know Docs cannot be resoled, but they should last you many years of hard wear regardless.

  3. They will be uncomfortable the first week or two you're breaking them in, but then are quite comfortable. I don't think they're a great beginner pair of shoes because they're a very very casual boot, and really only look good with a certain type of aesthetic. CDBs are much more versatile, but again it depends on your style.

Was going to recommend the Eastland High Fidelity boots, but /u/djwoll beat me to it. Here's a link to them on Amazon. I think they fall under the 25% off $100 dollar boots promotion that they have going on too. The promo code for that is BOOTSFAM.

u/beargrizzly · 5 pointsr/malefashionadvice

http://www.amazon.com/Clarks-Bushacre-Lace-Up-Beeswax-Leather/dp/B004DCSYZY I got these for $60, they're very similar in style to CDB's but the quality isn't as good. I personally own a pair and I love them. Since they're both made by Clark's, very similar in style to CDBS and lower in price, I think they're a perfect match for your brother.

Here's an album I found that compares Bushacres and CDBs.

u/MarcGunt · 5 pointsr/FrugalMaleFashionCDN

I bought the "Cognac" version of these from little Burgundy a few weeks back for the same price. The actual colour was the Tan Renegade that you can see on the Amazon page: https://www.amazon.ca/Original-Chippewa-Collection-Service-Utility/dp/B00FLO6KUE

I believe this Bordeaux colour is the same as the Cordovan colour. Little Burgundy seems to like changing the name and colour names of shoes on their website. Free shipping.

Ok so I’m looking for moc toe boot that can service me in the winter time(Minnesotan winter to be exact). So from what I understand I’m looking for a rubber sole with lugs. I’ve been looking at mostly redwings because that’s what I know is recommended most the time.

So something like this WOUND’T work? RW Heritage Classic Moc

But his would, right? RW Moc toe Lug

or this? I’m not sure about the sole Thorogood Moc Toe tobacco

This says it’s a Vibram® Christy Blown Rubber Wedge outsole, would that work? Thorogood Moc toe brown crazyhorse

Those last two would appear to be the same damn thing, but say they have different soles.

I really like the white wedge sole, but it’s hard to commit to something that will be a liability come winter time. The price on lugged sole I’m not a fan of, but it is what it is.

The way a lot of these are described seems inconsistent to me and I can’t make heads or tails of what won’t cause me to eat shit this winter…

Also, any other boots I should be looking at?

Thanks.

EDIT: What about these?

u/versusgorilla · 4 pointsr/OkCupid

At least you got some closure as to what happened.

The one time I was stood up, it was by a girl who had replied to my first message EDIT: she messaged ME first (what a bitch!), was very quick to give me her number and texted me a couple times between when we set the date and the day of the date itself. So I was pretty sure she wasn't going to flake, I mean, she had showed a bunch of interest, more than some girls have showed when they actually DID show for a date.

I get to the tea house we set to meet at, and she isn't there, so I text to say I am here and waiting outside. It was like five minutes before we were supposed to meet, so I assumed she hadn't showed up and then peaced out. 15 minutes later I text to say I'm still there and hope traffic wasn't too bad.

45 minutes later, I send her a text about how annoying it was to make me drive all the way out to her area to meet up only to have her disappear entirely. I told her she should have been an adult and let me know she wasn't interested and that she should really reflect on what she did (totally pulled out a teacher scolding)

Then I went to DSW and bought a sick pair of boots that were an amazing sale price. She disabled her account, probably so I wouldn't send her mean messages, then enabled it again a day or two later. I dropped by once more to appear on her visitors list and hopefully make her feel bad one more time before hiding her.

Hi guys - moving to NorCal for grad school and trying to plug a few gaps in my wardrobe by then. Couple questions.

I need a pair of shoes to wear with jeans when I want to look a bit more presentable. Would bass bucks or CDBs better fill this niche?

What is your recommendation for a low rise shoe to wear with shorts? I've got a pair of grey/grey vans LPE but I'm not a huge fan of how they look.

u/AppleNippleBob · 4 pointsr/Construction

Not sneakers, but I think these are best:

u/zootam · 4 pointsr/frugalmalefashion

what proof do you want?

No "source" is going to come out and say they're made by Chippewa. Obviously there is some kind of clause preventing JB from divulging them as a client, Aldo won't reveal their suppliers, or maybe there was an additional middleman in between.

Just think about it, what US based manufacturer would use horween leather, and make a product that is virtually identical to Chippewa's in every way? Just by deductive reasoning- it should be the most likely and reasonable conclusion that these are made by Chippewa/Justin Brands- no "source" should have to confirm that for you.

The best proof I have- aside from all the other comparative evidence- is the unique and distinct way Chippewa labels their sizing on the inside of the tongue- using some glue or something and then printing on top of it.

See this picture- my Aldo's on the right, this review's Chippewa's on the left

AFAIK no other manufacturer does this, the same labeling style is clearly found on the inside of the Aldo boots.

Also, the interior construction, and overall construction is basically identical based on that picture and many others.

To be clear, these are NOT the regular old chippewa boot you may be thinking of .

They are this model or the "renegade" on their website

Either there is some unknown US manufacturer that went to extreme lengths to copy those Chippewa's, or, as seen in many cases already- Chippewa/JB made a product for another company....

If that doesn't convince you, I don't think anything will.

u/ggill1313 · 4 pointsr/malefashionadvice

Get some Iron Rangers factory seconds. They go on sale from time to time down to $160. Great, great boot. I got some of the Red Wing insoles for around $25 that made a world of a difference as far as heat is concerned. Size .5-1 size down. If you have wide feet, don't size down to .5 size down, depending on your foot size.

You also have the Chippewa Service Boot. I got my brother some for Christmas and they are actually really nice. The "Cordovan" option looks lovely and is a lot more versatile than one might think as it's a more burgundy color. But it really works in occasions where you would wear this sort of thing.

The Thorogoods Moc Toe is a great boot as well for a different look. These can't be dressed up as easily IMO, but good boots the same. Red Wing has a similar boot if you'd prefer the look of it. It's also a good boot.

For all of these, get some nice wool socks. Darn Tough makes some good ones but I don't like the looks. Anonymousism also makes some good stuff provided you like the colors, but IMO are a bit overpriced. My favorite wool socks came from J. Crew last season. They are thick, warm, look good, and were reasonable priced.

If you have any other questions, let me know!

Value Village with Community Donations hooked up to them (not sure if they all have them) are great depending on location. The closest one to me (less than five minutes!) is stuck dead between three wealthier cities in the area, and I constantly find really good deals in my size.

AG pants with their tags still on (marked at $230) for $13 last month in my size. They also had these exact clark's chukkas with no wear on the soles that I snagged as well for $9. A little tight at the tip since I have wider feet, but I wasn't going to pass up that opportunity.

u/caughtoncandy · 3 pointsr/frugalmalefashion

clark's desert boots link since you don't know what they are: http://www.amazon.com/Clarks-Originals-Mens-Desert-Beeswax/dp/B000WU8SBG/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1377563207&sr=8-1&keywords=clarks+desert+boot+men

check out sebago docksides, on amazon they are arguably better than Sperry, and these can be had as low as about $35 if you sign up for the amazon shoe discount. http://www.amazon.com/Sebago-Mens-Docksides-Boat-Yellow/dp/B009NBRML2/ref=sr_1_3?ie=UTF8&qid=1377563237&sr=8-3&keywords=sebago+docksides+men

Looking to get some Clarks Men's Bushacre 2 (prefer them over the CDB) and was looking at them on amazon. The beeswax on there looks like peanut butter but I've heard people say that the ones they receive look more like the beeswax CDBs. Has anybody bought them and can confirm, and whats a good way to dress casual with the boots?

Related note, I've had Merrell Trailgloves for a few years and they're the best made athletic shoe I've ever owned. My last pair of New Balances fell apart within three months, and never have I had a pair look good after a year. My trailgloves look new, absolutely no separation of glue or stitching issues. I'm almost through the tread though and will definitely buy another pair.

u/SplatterSack · 3 pointsr/backpacking

I like that they are designed to be comfortable without socks and have a sandal type feel that is nice after a long ride.

I'm not personally a huge fan of the silhouette. Like others have said, the Red Wing Postman is considerable cheaper, and looks better in my opinion.

u/telegraphmachine · 3 pointsr/malefashionadvice

another option would be redwing postman

u/asforus · 3 pointsr/BuyItForLife

I would recommend a pair of good boots. There are countless recommendations on this sub from red wing to Danner. Thorogoods are a good option to try out a pair of boots that are more affordable and MiUSA. If I was a mechanic I might get steel toes to protect my toes. If it's the soles that are wearing out you can go to a cobbler after you wear them for a while and have him glue a layer of rubber on the bottom for $10. Every so often have them replace the rubber. So if it were me and I was gonna really F these boots up and it was a trial kind of thing, I'd go for Thorogood steel toes with the thick white soles. They are meant for walking or standing on flat surfaces for long periods, and are more affordable for this sort of "try out" if you will.

> lol, these kinds of child-labor/child-prostitution apologetics are kinda funny in juxtaposition to how much hand-wringing is done over great leaps forward and collectivization/rapid industrialization done under state planning

Well, once capitalism vs socialism genocide Olympics begin the discussion is pretty much over, at least from a social science perspective. But yeah, it's pretty unlikely that an argument that could attack state-socialism/maoism/marxist-leninism/communism/whatever as immoral, defend the morality of capitalism and yet still somehow remain consistent. The only person to do it somewhat successfully was Hayek but usually, you end up with something more akin to Rothbard or Mises.

> Not to say that the respective sets of problems are commensurable

The solution is to compare them anyway, obviously.

> and moral thinking split that happens with them: we know of no better way of doing capitalism without child-labor (or child-prostitution),

We know how "to do" capitalism without child labor but unfortunately, I do not think we can say the same about the industrialization which where we see the most flagrant abuses of child labor historically and contemporarily.

Regardless, I'm not really sure what you point is. It's not like capitalism has a monopoly on the use of child labor.

> yet the consequences of state-enforced industrialization and agricultural reform are unconditionally the final nail in the communist coffin.

The nail in the coffin for forced industrialization and collective agriculture reform is that it is that it is not competitive in the long term. Not that they don't have their place, many of the east asian tigers started with state lead reform and then transitioned to market economies.

I squat in Adipowers, which are just a shoe with a hard, elevated heel, allowing for better form and deeper depth.

I deadlift in socks because it kind of allows me to "grip" the floor.

I wear my beat up old sneakers for everything else.

u/d12964 · 3 pointsr/ManyBaggers

Soles are hard plastic or even wood so they don't compress when you're holding heavy weight. They also have a lot of support so the shoe basically locks your foot in. Most of them are originally designed for Olympic weightlifting.

I don't want you to feel like "oh shit", but there are a few things:

  1. I noticed you're not keeping your arms and upper back tight. Ideally, you want those locked in and tight throughout the entire movement. It's going to suck and be super uncomfortable for a little while, but you'll feel more stable and secure once you're over the initial suck of it.

  2. You're not hitting depth. What goes through your mind as you're descending? When I had problems hitting depth, I'd have significant pain in my right hip flexor and left groin. I found out that I have lateral pelvic tilt and now I do band distractions for about 10-20 minutes before each squat session. Changed my squatting life. See these links for more info:
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dRmT1mja4uk
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=f3b9Nz-G0Kw

  3. Learn the Valsalva Maneuver, aka properly bracing your core in preparation for a lift. I tighten my core by "tucking my tail" and lowering my ribcage, breath deep a few times, then inhale to the point where I feel my lower back expand. Hold that, keep your upper back and arms tight, then squat.

    http://www.kingofthegym.com/valsalva-maneuver/

  4. Looks like you're squatting in tennis shoes. Either squat in flats or get some olympic lifyting shoes. I use the adipowers (red and black baby!), but there are many different brands out there. Nike has some great ones, but they're definitely pricey. The adipowers go on sale sometimes for about 50% off, so keep your eye out if you don't have a ton of expendable income.

Get some nice suede loafers or boat shoes

u/Chaoss780 · 2 pointsr/malefashionadvice

The one you described is either the Sahara or Amaretto I think.

I personally own a pair of Saharas, and they are definitely the most versatile colorway Sperry releases. They go with literally any color short, and look great both new and broken in and dirty.

Earlier today I also figured I would get another pair since I bought my current ones a year ago and would like to mix it up perhaps a bit more this summer. I ended up going down to either Burnished Brown Tan, Tan, or Navy. The one thing I liked about these was the white sole - I thought it gave a really cool accent.

My problem with the navy is that it seems they use a different leather. If you look at the picture closely it looks must more textured than the others.

The tan to me looked too much like the Sahara just with a white sole.

So I settled on the Dark burnished brown one. The price just dropped recently which helped me settle on it as well.

All in all, the sperrys I see the most are Saharas. The second most I see are burnished brown and tan. I do see a lot of Oatmeals too, so any of these I would consider "in" right now.

u/Jeremiah_Guy · 2 pointsr/malefashionadvice

I'm 95% sure those are just sperrys.

u/jdbee · 2 pointsr/malefashionadvice

Where are you seeing them for $120-160? You can get CDBs on Amazon for just over $90, and regular retail price on Top-siders is only $90. They're also less than $70 on Amazon.

I use a combination of Google shopping and retailmenot.com when I'm looking for low prices and coupon codes. When the planets align, you can find something on sale and a discount/free shipping code for the site.

u/AlGoreVidalSassoon · 2 pointsr/malefashionadvice

My soul hurts every time I recommend these but Clark's Desert Boots sound like they would be perfect for you. They're so ubiquitous here because they're fairly cheap and extremely versatile and go with just about anything.

u/alphapoker24 · 2 pointsr/malefashionadvice

No experience with Thursday Boots myself, but these boots from Red Wing are similar. They're a little more expensive, but Red Wings are generally more highly regarded than Thursday Boots.

u/vonbonbon · 2 pointsr/malefashionadvice

I wore black jeans and a black crewneck yesterday.

I wore it with my [Thorogoods])https://www.amazon.com/dp/B001QJ4I6Q/) which added a little color.

I thought it looked good. So did my wife.

u/lessthanjake · 2 pointsr/TeenMFA

They're awesome boots, highly recommend. If you haven't done it before, there's a way to sign up for Amazon shoe thingy and get like 15% off your first purchase. I'm sure someone else knows more about this.

u/HardwareLust · 2 pointsr/frugalmalefashion

Ah ha! We're looking at two different boots! These are the ones I was looking at:

http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B001QJ4I6Q

u/cats_cats_cats · 2 pointsr/malefashionadvice

Let's see if this works.

If not, no, I don't believe there has been a recent price hike.

u/NotClever · 2 pointsr/malefashionadvice

Word.

The Park Ave is probably a bit overkill unless you need it for black suit wear regularly. Which is not to say you can't dress it down, as most people won't care at all, but if you want to get something a a little more interesting you can probably get away with it just fine.

I personally prefer things with broguing on them just because they're more interesting. The AE Strand is in a style I like quite a bit (and which MFA recommends regularly). It's got what's known as a "medallion" on the cap, which just means it has a cool little perforation pattern. A nifty thing about medallions is that each shoe maker tends to have their own trademark design, so you can get a cool unique looking shoe even if the styling is standard. AE's medallion is relatively plain, but just something fun to look for.

One last note on dress shoe stuff in general that I don't think is in the sidebar: Full leather shoes are made on different "lasts," which are just molds that the leather is shaped over. Thus when you see something on a dress shoe that tells you what last it is, that's telling you the shape. Note that it might be tricky to figure out which last a shoe is on if you're not at a specialty store where the salespeople really know their shit, but you can usually look it up online easily. Different lasts fit differently, so you can't ever assume that if you fit a size X perfectly in one shoe you'll be a size X in any other dress shoe, even if it's from the same manufacturer. I highly advise you to go try shoes on in person if you can. You'll feel like a dick trying on a bunch of shoes and getting sizing help when you don't intend to buy at full price (which you should not need to do), but it's a pricey decision so it won't seem weird if you tell them you need to think about it.

So anyway, on to deal searching. If you want to step it up from Florsheims, know that while Allen Edmonds basically all retail for $325 you shouldn't have trouble finding them for cheaper if you're diligent and patient. A couple weeks ago Amazon was selling a lot of them 30% off, for example. Nordstrom or Neiman's (can't remember which) should be having a half-yearly men's sale right after Christmas, too, which I think is 25% off.

This guy on Styleforum, though, sells new versions of the most popular AE models for $245 (25% off). He's got the Park Ave, the Fifth Ave (which is the Park Ave with a line of brouging on the toe cap), and the Strand. Haven't used him, but he's got good reviews. These guys usually get overstock, floor samples, etc. so it's legit.

You can also be on the lookout for "seconds" or "second quality" shoes in any brand, which are shoes with some sort of defect that kept them from passing QA. They're usually sold at a way deeper discount than the defect merits, and often the defect isn't noticeable. Usually to get ahold of these directly from the company you have to have a factory outlet or something near you, though.

u/FeedbackThrowProp · 2 pointsr/malefashionadvice

Need help between two shoes:

Allen Edmonds Walnut Strands or Herring Shoes Hampsteads. I find myself drawn more to the sleekness of the English style shoe whereas the Allen Edmonds seem almost clunky. I feel like my suit would work better with the Herring which is apparently made on a Loake last.

Problem is I've already ordered a pair of Allen Edmonds at an amazing price point ($170 USD for firsts), so maybe you can convince me that AEs are good enough, and I shouldn't go through the trouble of ordering something from England.

Thoughts?

These?
Both amazon reviews and users from reddit said it comes big so you need to buy a size or so down.

u/SargesHeroes · 2 pointsr/frugalmalefashion

Not as versatile as all of the boots recommended here (i.e. intended for any weather), but the lowest I would go on boots is Eastland High Fidelity. I've heard pretty decent things about them and they can be had for about 100-110.

u/swagglikerichie · 2 pointsr/malefashionadvice

What's a Clark boot that would be an ideal first and only boot choice?

Ideal as far as versatility (color a/ outfits) , comfort, and price?

I've looked at these [these](Clarks Men's Bushacre 2 Boot,Beeswax Leather,10.5 M US https://www.amazon.com/dp/B004DCV1JU/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_GTLOybBSQE5MT) in many different colors, but am having trouble deciding what is right for me.

Or the standard "Dessert Boot"

Should I look into suede or leather options?

u/radical_negative_one · 2 pointsr/malefashionadvice

Amazon's prices vary by size and color, but they're always fluctuating up and down. Watch your size in any colors that you're considering for a couple weeks, at least one should go down toward $80 at some point. Right now, I'm seeing the Bushacre in my size for roughly $80 in a few colors. If you're a first-time customer and you already know your size, you can sign up for a shoe email and get a 20% off coupon.

u/USSZim · 2 pointsr/malefashionadvice

I wear Chippewas, which you can get on Amazon for a little over $100 with the coupons they are offering now. If you get a lugged sole, you should get some good traction.

u/mtjess60 · 2 pointsr/malefashionadvice

I often suggest the lugged outsole version (opposed to the flat outsole) of the Chippewa Apache with snoseal as a good midwestern winter boot option (Ohio). I trekked mostly on unshoveled sidewalks (snow/ice mix) to and from class (about a mile each way) and did just fine all winter. The max I walked through was maybe 6 inches of snow.

I am a 13 and went a full size down to 12 and they broke in marvelously.

These guys: http://smile.amazon.com/Chippewa-Mens-20080-Chocolate-Apache/dp/B004TJVX7M/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1451418999&sr=8-1&keywords=apache+boots

u/ADillPickle · 2 pointsr/malefashionadvice

I was looking into buying these boots. I was wondering what your opinion is on them? Also what general things they would look good with.

u/wisstig96 · 2 pointsr/malefashionadvice

Are [Clark's Bushacre 2] (https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B005970UFO/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o04_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1) any good in rain? I'm not talking like really bad rain just a medium rain shower; I'd rather not have to break out Bean Boots or go buy rain boots for the limited rain here in Columbus.

u/ZacharyRD · 2 pointsr/Ultralight

I love city walking / urban hiking in the New Balance Minimus Zero, and have even run a half-marathon in them. However I find them not actually enough cushion for all wilderness trails; on real rocky ground, I dislike how much sharp things hurt. They're also not that durable, in the upper; they can rip, and they don't last. However, if you're actually someone who's gone REAL barefoot outdoors, and enjoy it, they'll probably work for you.

My favorite hiking barefoot shoe right now is the Merrell Trail Glove. It is certainly heavier by a few ounces, but it's still much lighter than basically any other shoe, comfortable as heck, and much more durable. It's 0mm drop, but with 4mm cushion. http://www.amazon.com/Merrell-Mens-Barefoot-Trail-Glove/dp/B005N4IUL4

u/casterfield · 2 pointsr/goodyearwelt

I have a pair that's similar to the 1ks (red wing work oxford), and I don't think they'd work for a wedding or even an interview. Do you already have that pair?

If not, I think the postman would work better-- and is cheaper-- if you really want to buy a work oxford that can double for more formal occasions.

u/stonebock · 2 pointsr/frugalmalefashion

So I'm guessing comfortable dress shoes? Assuming outfit is wool slacks and a dress shirt.

Could go for some hybrid like the LunarGrand. There are a couple of more subdued options and I've seen a few different colors at Nordstrom Rack from time to time.

Maybe luck out on a sale for Red Wing Postman's?

Thanks!

u/_spacelynx_ · 2 pointsr/weightlifting

Hmmm which Romaleos were you using (2's vs 3's), and how did you feel (heavy/light, too stable/unstable, did you feel you were being pushed too forward)? Romaleos have typically been preferred if you have a wider foot, well the Romaleos 2's at least.

All things considered, my recommendation would be to go for an Adipower (1st gen) or Romaleos 2, however, both have now been discontinued. They were both superb lifters and most elite/profession lifters still use these lifters instead of the newer versions. So from the newer options, I would recommend you look into the Legacy Lifter or maybe even the Do-Win lifters ( Classic or More Modern). I know Adidas has new Adipower, but I have not done enough research or heard enough good things to make any comments or recommendations on.

I hope you find all this information helpful.

u/Polaaar · 1 pointr/malefashionadvice

Fine. Preppy. I would recommend Sebago or Sperrys instead though. If you're looking for that exact color I would suggest tan Sebagos.

u/Digestivess · 1 pointr/malefashionadvice

u/persquare · 1 pointr/malefashionadvice

Go for Clark Deserts in Beeswax; they'll be much better than those Hush Puppies for only $20 more.

The Eastland mocs are really summer/late spring shoes. As such they're generally worn sockless.

Really this depends on where you live. From your choices I am guessing somewhere warm. If so just get the Clarks. If you deal with snow/bad weather, look at Iron Rangers or many of the other 8" boots listed in the fall season guide on the bar on the right.

u/JR_Shoegazer · 1 pointr/malefashionadvice

Most good boots are in a higher price range. Thorogood makes high quality boots for that price. They have moc-toe and plain-toe. The price range fluctuates online. If those don't work try Bexley or Golden Fox. Not sure how Golden Fox holds up construction wise or how comfortable they are. You're going to have a break in period on most boots so I wouldn't expect them to be comfortable right away.

u/elneuvabtg · 1 pointr/funny

Depends on what you're talking about but yeah in terms of dress shoes, these shoes are classy and fashionable and everything else is pretty much seen as plebeian imitation. Is what it is, but these are the fashionable choices for dressed up casual all the way to suit wear.

For example, /r/malefashionadvice (used to? still does?) have an affection for Allen Edmond Strands, like these:http://www.amazon.com/Allen-Edmonds-Strand-Cap-Toe-Oxford/dp/B001TDL0GK

Those styles of lighter brown with detail can be worn down to jeans, or worn up to certain types of suits. They catch the attention of people who know shoes and judge based on shoes.

>Durability is not an issue because fashion wise you need to swap out your shoes every so often

To be honest, these styles of menswear aren't going to go out of style, or at least they haven't over very many decades. There are styles/trends in shoewear (avoid boxy toes) but smart purchases will avoid it because while some certain attributes may be trendy, the overall style of the hand welted leather dress shoe has been fashionable for centuries.

And durability is an issue with these shoes much like it is with a suit. You don't buy new suits every year or two, why buy new shoes every year or two?

I've been told that the go-to for quality belts here is Orion; I've also been told that the color of the belts on their website can sometimes be misleading. Hence I'd like some advice:

What SPECIFIC color of dark brown belt on Orion's website matches the following:

  1. Clarks Desert Boots - Beeswax ( http://www.amazon.com/Clarks-Originals-Mens-Desert-Beeswax/dp/B001UISA76/ref=sr_1_1?s=shoes&ie=UTF8&qid=1397256142&sr=1-1&keywords=clarks+desert+boots+beeswax )

  2. LL Bean Jackman Blucher Mocs - Dark Brown ( http://www.llbean.com/llb/shop/76485?feat=11575-ppxs&dds=y )

    Thanks!
u/chikenwacker · 1 pointr/Sneakers

Absolutely. Desert Boots are great and if you like the look of them, but are looking for something cheaper, their Bushacre 2's are nice, just take some breaking in. I wouldn't say that any Clark's shoes are as comfortable as sneakers though (Wallabies have really cushioned soles, but lack stability. Desert Boots are less comfortable, but really solid, stable shoes).

That said, neither of those options are really "dress" shoes. There are "dressier" shoes that you could wear to church or to parties, but aren't meant to be worn in place of black dress shoes. Clarks sells some dress shoes, but they aren't particularly known for them and I have no experience with them. I personally like Cole Haans like many people here have said. I own this pair that are good for what I need them for (summer internship and interviews during the year) and are pretty comfortable after a bit of breaking in. Not sure what line of work you're in, but if its somewhere where you'll be working up the corporate ladder and wearing a suit most of your life, they're good starter shoes. Oh, and I think I paid ~$120-130 for them when they were on sale at a Nordstrom, so you can definitely get a better price if you're willing to wait.

u/Snow_Mandalorian · 1 pointr/frugalmalefashion

Mine were muted brown, definitely closer to this color.

u/Orgcore · 1 pointr/malefashionadvice

Great post, but quick question. For the Chippewa's, how does the pair in the original post compare with these slightly more expensive ones?. Is it just color?

EDIT: Lug sole apparently, never mind! I'll probably go with those because of the snow and slush.

u/jerschwab · 1 pointr/frugalmalefashion

Damn, just bought these for $143 less the 25% BOOTSFAM code a few days ago (with the vibram soles)... $112 less 20% is a much better deal! Too bad, it's a different product code at Amazon otherwise I may be able to get some money back.

Ones I bought with the Vibram lugged soles (still showing $143):

I would like to but these Chippewa Apache Lace-Up Boots (http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B004TK2UCI?psc=1&redirect=true&ref_=ox_sc_act_title_1&smid=A2WOPAGVJGO3RL) but I'm a student and the $150 price tag is a little high for me. Does anyone know of somewhere selling them for a better price or an Amazon promo code code that I could use? Are these boots worth the cost?

u/RLAZ101 · 1 pointr/malefashionadvice

Which ones for my first pair of boots ever? These
or
these? Feedback would be great, I've been pondering which to buy for months now :(

u/MarbleShoes · 1 pointr/malefashionadvice

Thank you.

Sorry to keep harassing you, but I'm really trying to get this sorted out quickly. Are these the Clarks you were referring to? I like them but I'm imagining those would go best with light chinos or grey. Right?

u/Jonoczall · 1 pointr/malefashionadvice

lol you're probably looking for the particular type of Desert Boot. Here you go buddy. And if you're looking for something more durable there is the Clarks Bushacre Desert Boot. Same shoe different sole. I'm going to get me a pair of Bushacres soon.

u/Defaultv1 · 1 pointr/frugalmalefashion

Any recommendations for a leather black belt? I plan to use it close to 5-6 days a week, 5 of those days being in an office.

Also thoughts on these? There's a deal thread for Clarks boots, but I get free shipping and returns on Amazon.

Here are some videos:

Haile running

natural running tutorial

You can analyze their forms here, look how efficient and smooth they are:

Frank shorter

Abebe Bikila

You see how frank seems to be leaning forward and his legs move almost like a wheel, rhythmically? He isn't running across the ground, he's falling and catching himself with each step. Running is continuous falling. He isn't leaning forward or craning his back either, with proper form your body ends up in that lean and your legs end up at a certain natural cadence. If you aren't fighting your body then running faster comes easily. Actual running can be enjoyable and easy, not painful. Much of the pain comes from improper/inefficient running technique. It's the difference between going with the grain and against it. Efficient running is going with the grain.

I remember when I first took off these awful shoes that I had that were really hurting me back in the day (they weren't even the correct size and they were puma sneakers) and I ran barefoot and went way faster. My heart would beat and my breath would have trouble keeping up with how fast I was going but my legs had no problem with it. I also noticed my cadence increased and I went much faster. This was in like tenth grade, before I did cross country my junior year. I was just getting into running.

When you run with proper form, you don't need to try to move your legs faster, they end up moving faster on their own. You get around a 180 cadence (maybe slightly less or more). It doesn't have to be exact but it ends up being around that. Many people go slower, like 130 steps per minute, it's because they're running inefficiently. Look at all elite runners and they have a similar cadence and stride. Interestingly enough the world record holder for the 5000m and 10000m had a cadence of around 190 and it was around 215 for his final kick at the olympics. His stride remained the same.

When you run correctly it feels effortless, like you're gliding across the ground, flying almost. That first time you really get it right it feels amazing, when i've taken off shoes I felt like a weight had lifted off me (it had) and it was like my feet weren't there. When you don't have issues picking up your feet then you go faster and when you don't have an arch preventing your feet from naturally carrying you forward than you go faster.

If you look at most runners who are fast and even sprinters like Usain Bolt who dominate, you'll notice that their legs come up behind to their butts. This happens more with faster races than longer races like marathons, but it's a pattern. This is because these runners have good hip mobility and hip extension. Having a posterior pelvic tilt or weak glutes and a weak back can lead to an inability to have that same range of motion. The legs coming up behind you to your butt is a sign of efficient form and it means your legs are moving like slingshots and you aren't wasting energy to go as fast as you're going, you're being efficient. You'll notice in Kenenisa Bekele's world record 5000m run his legs come up right behind his butt. His hip extension and hip mobility is on point. If your hip flexors are weak and your hip extensors are short and you have weak glutes or pelvic tilt issues then you will not be able to do that. Of course running properly can strengthen all those muscles.

I would recommend running in dirt or grass and seeing what it feels like, you can even wear socks. I've gone running in socks before. When you run properly it will feel like it hurts more than usual. It's like if you sit with good posture and it hurts more than slouching. Slouching is still worse for you. You will eventually get used to it, but don't run inefficiently because it hurts less at first. It will be better for you in the long run. (get it? long run? ayyy)

If you don't stretch after biking you will have to stretch after running or injury is a risk. DO NOT stretch before, only stretch afterwards. There are dynamic stretches or warm ups you can do before running but just starting to run is a warm up itself. No static stretching, one exception which you may need to make is stretching your quads by bending at your knee and bringing your foot behind you to your butt. Like this. That's the one stretch that's okay to do before running.

I have used an exercise bike in the past when I was just starting to exercise. I don't like riding regular bikes because I'm not that good at it and I have trouble crossing streets. I don't like the thin road bikes because they require slouching and a bit of pelvis tucking and that bothers me, it may be different for you. I just think running is better overall for your body while biking works less muscles, but they both are cardio and cardio is good for you.

This is the exact model of shoes that worked really well for me during track season in xc. I set most of my PRs in this shoe and I had the best luck with them. I got injured later because I purchased a shoe with a terrible arch that rolled my ankles outward, but these shoes are great. They are neutral running shoes, they may have more on the bottom than your average minimalist shoe or sock, but they are neutral and good for practicing good form, although you may have trouble landing on your toes at first if you use these types of shoes. Of course going exactly on your toes isn't ideal, it may be good to get the transition going and prevent you from heel striking if you currently do, but you should be landing on your forefoot. That means slightly in front of the middle area of your foot, definitely not the heel though.

Just remember looking for neutral shoes with little heel rise or arch is the best way to go. Flat, neutral shoes, no rise. Not shoes for under or overpronation, neutral works great, it's closer to being barefoot than shoes with huge arches or angles. When it comes to form these shoes may be better, depending on how much you run the one I linked may get worn out quickly, but surface and how hard you pound the pavement as well as how often matters. If the shoes gets torn apart you obviously don't want to keep using it, rather get a new one. I think I used mine 3 or more months, but I couldn't afford newer ones, I would have replaced them earlier. Let's say if you're running 60 miles a weeks than 2-3 months should be good.

If you are going to get minimalist shoes instead of those ones then avoid the five finger shoes! They spread your toes apart and that will hurt your running and make you run weakly and may even cause injury. Having your toes apart in socks or barefoot is fine because they are apart anyway, but having them apart in those shoes will prevent you from "kicking" off the ground or having any power in your run, when I used those five finger gimmicks I ended up doing a weird walk/waddle run because I couldn't push off my toes, and trying would probably hurt them. They were forced apart. If going for minimalist shoes, go for ones that keep your toes together, like this or the ones in the suggestions.

FYI my normal shoe size and my spike size was 10 but my running shoe size was 9.5. A good shoe will still screw you over if it doesn't fit you properly, so be sure to get a proper fit.

Just bought a pair of their Barefoot Trail Gloves (women's) and fell in love. They are so comfortable! They aren't ugly like the Five Fingers, and have support, unlike my Vivobarefoot sneakers. They also have a mesh upper, which might be handy in the humid climate of Indonesia. My boyfriend also bought a pair and he has found it has helped his posture and back pain. They definitely seem to be high-quality, and I've so far experienced good customer service from Merrell.

If you haven't worn minimalist shoes/don't go barefoot often, it's possible you might need a transition period to strengthen the different muscles, but it's definitely worth it.

I personally wear the Irish setters and don't have any complaints. Idk how much experience with work boots you have, but I would recommended oiling or putting some kind of leather lotion on them to help break them in. Before I did this I got blisters on my hands from trying to pull the laces tight enough that's how stiff the leather is. Once you oil them they'll be like a leather sock sucked to your foot.

YTA, multiple times unfortunately.

I tried counting, but honestly (Insert Master Luke Meme Here), just about everything you have said was wrong. Basically, if you force your guests to take off their shoes to enter your house, you are assuming responsibility for them. Ain't nobody taking off their shoes unless they are asked/required to. How would someone know the risks associated with leaving shoes where the host told them to?

" if you have something valuable, you have to put it out of reach of a dog." " I told her that everyone knows dogs are pretty destructive. "

-Dude, if that's what you honestly think, you have either never met a "House Friendly" dog before, or you have a pretty skewed idea of what "House Friendly" entails. Did you rescue a junkyard dog or something?

" but who goes walking around wearing $500+ shoes?! "

-Just about anyone who is a professional. You are drastically out of touch here. Even construction boots are easily $200:

https://www.amazon.com/Thorogood-American-Heritage-MAXwear-Safety/dp/B00623DYVQ

"Listen, I'm really sorry that [Dogsname] chewed up your shoes, but I don't really think it's fair for me to have to pay you money for shoes that you didn't even buy. Maybe we can go shopping together soon and I'll help you pick out a new pair and I'll look for whatever coupons or deals are out there."

-Wow. Just wow. Your friend is obviously an angel in human form for not physically injuring you. I don't condone violence, but just thinking about someone saying this to me makes me cringe so bad that my fight or flight sense wants to take over. Specifically, it's the coupons part - That's just some icing on a multi-layered cringe cake.

" I just can't really afford to pay for shoes that expensive "

-Ahhhhhhhhh, the truth sets you freeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee! You should have led with this. Your friend is obviously willing to compromise to save your friendship, but if I didn't know any better, I'd say it looks like you are actively working to screw her over like she's an abusive ex that cheated on you.

" Aaaand after that, she apparently sent our thread to the other girls and everyone has decided I'm some big monster and they no longer want to do the TV parties at my place."

It's not that you are a monster, it's that you are so completely clueless that this kind of thing will absolutely happen again. Personally, I'm struggling to understand the logic of someone who has their guests take their shoes off (This as itself bothers me, but that's a whole different thread), but then has a feral fucking animal in the house.

Well, in my searching I'm realizing that boots will be expensive, so let's say $100-150. I'm leaning toward a pair of these: http://www.amazon.com/Thorogood-American-Heritage-804-4200-6-Inch/dp/B00623DYVQ/ref=pd_sbs_shoe_2

u/Philately · 1 pointr/goodyearwelt

Hi, so like the title mentions, there is this "crack" along with small holes near the side of the sole of the boot and I was wondering if it could cause the boo to break in the future. This is a Chippewa 6" boot that I recently bought on Amazon prime day for around 140 dollars:

Original Chippewa Collection Men's 1901M25 Engineer Boot, Cordovan, 10 D US https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00BP45ENS/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_GHhIxbRJBZE69

Will this issue be bad enough to justify returning the boot ?

Thanks for the help.

u/ThelemaAndLouise · 1 pointr/goodyearwelt

Well, I've got my 899's, and I'm looking for something a little less heavy. My primary concern is that I need a secondary boot that I can commute public transit in NYC in the dead of winter so my 899's don't rot. That's why I was considering the Mad Boots at that price.

Budget, I would characterize $250 as a manageable kick in the nuts. This winter has been rough on the budget since I owned nothing but very manly sundresses before I moved here.

Style-wise, something mildly different from my 899's. I could go with Moc-toe, or toe cap, or something sleeker. Unfortunately, I have big wide stupid feet, so I will settle for stylish clown shoes.

Thanks for any guidance you can offer!

Tried looking up the Chippewa Smiths and couldn't find much info on them, are these like the discount version of their Service Utility boot?

u/MinorSeventh94 · 1 pointr/malefashionadvice

How versatile is cordovan? I'm looking at the Chippewa service boots (below) and I'm wondering how easy it would be to incorporate the cordovan color into, well, any casual outfit. I only want to buy one pair of boots, so I'm looking for something that will go with jeans, olive chinos and tan chinos. I don't like Iron Rangers, but if anyone has another suggestion in the sub-300 price range, hit me.

The price isn't that great for those. I'm seen them down around $100 somewhat frequently. Also think brown is a much more versatile color.

Chippewa makes a much more expensive Service Boot that goes a lot better with chinos. Right now Aldo is selling a rebranded version of the boot for $142 but they're selling out fast. It's the same boot except the insole says Aldo, there's no Chippewa stamp on the leather, and it has speedhooks like the J Crew version.
