Knife nut here. Allow me to expound.

Serrated vs Straight - Serrations are good for cutting tough soft things. Thick rope and such. Not much else.

Locking Blade with Pocket Clip - Gerber is awful. Avoid at all costs. Seriously. The construction is sub par and the materials are worse.

Kershaw is a good budget recommendation. Of the Kershaws, I would recommend the entire Ken Onion design lineup (the Leek, the Shallot, and the Chive are the three I would purchase myself. In fact, I own all three)

For the more expensive (and, frankly, gorgeous) options, I cannot recommend Benchmade enough. So many classy blades. In fact, Bechmade gets its own category.

Benchmade - Model 586: Aluminium + black G10 handles, AXIS lock, classy as fuck.

Bali-songs: Models 32, 51, 62, 63, and 67. Interesting little (and big) blades. Very fun, extremely beautiful, and a real crowd pleaser.

And that's all I'm going to type for now (at work). If you are interested, check out Benchmade, Knifecenter, and such. Feel free to head over to /r/knives /r/knifeclub for more information, or just ask me, here in comments or with a PM, if you have any questions.

Oh, and do be careful with those balis. They are partially toys, but very very sharp toys.

EDIT: I will add more when I get home late tonight if I remember to.

I know this will get buried but I have decided to revamp my whole EDC.

/u/ieatedjesus I have taken the plunge on the Wallet you have recomended. I hate when a product has no reviews or I can't do research about it but whatever. I'm also super stingy with money so this is a huge deal for me lol ($42 with engraving)

As for the pen, I have decided to get a Fisher Space Pen $15. I have 3. Now I will have 4. (also bought a clip $5) ((also bought fieldnotes $10 for the wallet))

/u/odomandr I have decided to go with that knife $16. Nothing sexier than a good stone wash and minimalist design. I also need a knife. No idea about the quality but today I have decided to trust a total stranger on /r/EDC

/u/Ryl4nd99 Thank you for the great idea of a post! I hope to post again when everything comes in. I decided to add/replace my edc with the items above. I also carry a muthafuckin Casio as well as an Olight s2 Baton along with dollar store chapstick. Hopefully I can keep you updated or make a new post when all my goodies come in!

Sorry for the wall of text. Thank you for reading.

u/ANAL_PLUNDERING · 11 pointsr/knives

No problem.

Kershaw Scallion (Small, assisted opening, steel is not so great)

Kershaw Skyline (good size, G10, nice blade shape, steel can get to a crazy level of sharpness)

Kershaw OSO Sweet (pretty cool assisted opener, great price there on amazon)

Spyderco Tenacious (same decent steel on the OSO Sweet and Byrd, good G10, good blade shape, Spyderco quality, great value)

Byrd Cara2 (Great value, overseas production brings prices way down on all Byrd knives)

Here is one above your price range

And one below your price range

I dont really know if you care about credentials or not, but because it may lend some weight to my opinion I figured it may help. I am a first responder in Florida as well as a concealed carry weapons permit holder. I care strongly about my tools and the items I carry. Now that I am done being pretentious, here is my pick:

Without a doubt, the #1 knife that I carry is the Kershaw Blur- Glassbreaker. It is an assisted opening, locking knife with a metal handle, textured grip, and the option to have a serrated portion. The glassbreaker edition comes with a diamond tip on the end of the handle you can use to.... break glass. (Who knew, right?)

I have had mine for almost 6 years now of daily carry and use. Never chipped or broken on me and it is still sharp, although it definately could use a sharpening. If has held up near saltwater and constant body sweat.

To top it all off Kershaw offers free maintenance, cleaning, and sharpening on all their knives. You just have to pay for shipping it in.

I highly recommend the Kershaw Blur- Glassbreaker! https://www.amazon.com/Kershaw-Black-Glassbreaker-Knife-SpeedSafe/dp/B0074FIPEM

Edit: Btw, be careful looking for 'spring loaded' this is a broadly used term that can land you in legal trouble if somethjng happens. Check your state laws. I am not a law expert, dont cite my opinion, but usually length (cutoff is usally like 3inches) and direction and mode of opening matter a lot for the legality of a 'spring loaded' knife!

u/Tadashi047 · 10 pointsr/knives

Although the Instant is an alright knife, I believe that it is overpriced at $40 with a blade of 7Cr17Mov steel.

Kershaw Clash is about 20 bucks, made with better steel (8CR13MOV), assisted opening and also has lifetime warranty.

Kershaw Skyline at the price range of $35 has better steel (14C28N) than the Clash, assisted opening and the same warranty.

"I bought a seven-dollar pen because I always lose pens and I got sick of not caring." Mitch Hedberg

I drunkenly bought a $20 space pen 2 years ago and still love it, but $160 for a knife isn't a careless purchase for most people. If you like the simple/clean style of the ZT, you might be a fan of the Ruike I just picked up a few months ago for an EDC ~$30.

Look at this Ganzo.

For something smaller and stainless steel grips see the byrd meadowlark

This Tangram has G10 grips

Ruike knives are very well made given the price point. Look at their whole line.

Sorry for the lack of info fellas. I posted the pic last night and totally for got to add the specs.

u/_kato · 6 pointsr/knives

Ok. So to summarize what you want:

Will be used for

  • light cutting (packages)
  • medium use (camping, I assume food/feathersticking/kindling/whittling)
  • Just in case (not sure if you mean self defense or in case you need it)
  • Emergency Use in car (Seatbelts)

    Some things you also mention

    >when I want to use it, I want it to do the job properly

You listed off a large range of tasks, an I personally feel that for all those things, some of the knives you are looking at might not be necessarily the best.

    My Thoughts

Firstly, I would advise against using any knife as a go-to seatbelt cutter. For safety reasons you don't want to accidentally stab the person whose seatbelt you want to cut. Especially since tanto blade shapes are designed to maximize tip strength for stabbing/penetration. For your emergency needs I feel this or this would be better.

As for camping, a tanto blade is not "ideal" but for the tasks you I assume you'll be doing I think you'll be ok. A blade with a nice belly (the curved part of a blade, like a drop point) has more utility as it will be easier to slice food, and offer you a bit better control. But I mean if you like the tanto shape than by all means =).

If you feel like you're not going to have it on your person everyday, then that Kershaw RJI should be more than sufficient for your needs. Just because Kershaw's price are lower, they definitely do not feel like "cheapies"! Kershaw has great build quality, 8cr13MoV is an OK steel, and will be easy to touch up.

I haven't had any experience with SOG so I can't say much about them, other than that /r/knives is a fan of the SOG Flash. As for ZT, they are wonderful knives. they are a little big to have in the pocket, but the quality and craftmanship is definitely there. For how lightly you will use it, If I were in your shoes, I am not sure if I can justify this as a first buy, unless you have a real appreciation for knives.

    Other Options

  • CRKT M16
  • SOG Flash 2
  • Kershaw Blur
  • Benchmade Griptilian

They are all around the same blade size, and same "look" as your suggested 3. The first 3 are around the same price range as the Kershaw RJI and are community proven knives. The last is around the price range of the ZT 0700, but in my opinion is a better buy. Griptilians are a joy to use.

That's my $0.02, hopefully I didn't overwhelm you too much!

If you can push it to 50 CAD, the Ruike P801 is very well regarded and appears to ship from Canada, so no customs issues.

The Kershaw Chive pocket knife.

http://www.amazon.com/Kershaw-Onion-Chive-Pocket-Knife/dp/B0009VC9RW

It's utterly fantastic. I've been using one for over ten years.

u/alfredbordenismyname · 5 pointsr/knives

Look at the Kershaw Leek, its got a good 3 inch blade, it practically disappears in your pocket, is basically a modern gentlemen's folder, and can get it in several different colors. Its one of the most popular knives out there and is well made. Only thing to watch out for is the tip, its very thin and can break off if you try and use it as a pry bar. You can find the leek for about 40-60 bucks depending on the model.

Link - Kershaw Leek

If you're looking for something heavier duty, the Kershaw Blur or Freefall would be good buys. I use a freefall as one of my EDC knives and think its a great buy for the money. The blur is very well regarded as well, though I don't have experience with one myself.

Link for Blur

Link for Freefall

If you don't absolutely need the spring assist, another idea would be a Spyderco Delica 4, or perhaps a Spyderco Persistence if you want a little cheaper price. Both are solid knives for the money and aren't too bulky in the pocket. You can get the Delica in colors too!

Item | Description
:--:|:--
Lowepro Stealth Reporter camera bag | Bought this with another bigger, heftier Lowepro for $50 private sale. Ripper bag and has a zip on the top to get the camera out without opening the bag.
Blackrapid Sport Camera strap | I got one of the first iterations, I think - I feel like it cost me about $80, but this was like 6 years ago now. Great strap - allows you to have the camera hanging at your hip, ready until you need to shoot.
Nikon D3200 | Well, I'd love a cheeky mirrorless, but I've invested in the Nikon ecosphere with the lenses and the cheapie 3200 does everything I need it to do - if it ain't broke, don't fix it.
Nikon 24-70mm F2.8 ED VR | This lens is something else - fantastic focal range, fast glass, gold ring...just kisses fingers
Nikon SB-700 Speedlight | Not a big flash user - didn't actually use it on the day, but it was there, ready to go if required :)
Victorinox Rambler (swapped red scales out for black) | Stick it in the coin pocket with the Olight and you have an EDC champion - I have it with or near me 24/7 whcih I can't say for most of my gear.
Olight i3E EOS | Stick it in the coin pocket with the Victorinox and you have an EDC champion - I have it with or near me 24/7 whcih I can't say for most of my gear.
Emporio Armani 310/81 Polarised perscription Sunglasses | You need a nice, protective pair of glasses, living in Australia and these fit the bill.
Bic Lighter | Candles.
Leatherman Sidekick | It was going to be my new Victorinox Swisstool, but that's heavy in the pocket and I didn't want to belt-carry as laws here are a little open-to-interpretation with blade legality, so I stuck this in the watch pocket with its pocket clip and didn't actually use it all day.
Sharpie Fine Permamnet Marker | Useful for stuff like writing who presents were from on the paper!
Leatherman Carabiner on Keychain | Keeps my keys all nice and organised by separating the car key from the fob/house keys
Jaragar Automatic Tourbillion watch | A cheap watch that looks a lot more expensive than it is. Automatic movement, probably not a true tourbillion, but all the same, a classy piece. One small bugbear I recently noticed - it's Roman numerals and the 4, which should be IV is IIII. Damn cheap Chinese watch!

I'm not from California, but here are a few things you should bring:

-Warm clothes, extra clothes and at least 3-4 pairs of thick boot socks that has a wool mixture.

-Good boots.

-Gloves

-Wool cap

-Sun cap

-sunglasses

-Cutting tool (depends a lot on the environment you're in, but for the Cali desert, I think a knife is enough. Here's a good, sharp, affordable and safe knife: http://www.amazon.com/Morakniv-Craftline-Allround-Utility-3-8-Inch/dp/B004GAVOUU/ref=sr_1_8?ie=UTF8&qid=1395556620&sr=8-8&keywords=morakniv)

-At least 3 different ways of making fire (storm proof matches, lighter, firesteel, magnifying lens, etc)

-Rope and cordage

-Water bottles and different ways to catch, store and purifying the water. Also, bring enough water if you're heading into a dry area.

-Shovel (very handy).

-Navigation: map & compass in ADDITION to any eventual digital navigation system.

-Cooking pot to kill germs in water, making tea, etc.

-Sleeping pad so you don't sleep on the bare ground because that will suck the heat out of you.

-Sleeping bag / thick wool blanket.

-Shelter.

-First aid kit with bandages and compresses.

-Enough food.

-Different tools to gather and catch food.

-Flares, signal mirror and other signal devices.

-Remember to have a good backpack that doesn't destroy your back.

-Cell phone and eventual solar cell charger.

And remember to tell friend or family exactly WHERE you're heading at and WHEN you are coming back. Try to give them updates on your position at least once or twice a day with your cell phone so Search and Rescue know roughly where you are.

You can also put a note about where you're going and when you're expecting to come back under your car's windshield wiper.

Edit: and before you go, try to learn to use your gear and try to gather basic survival knowledge.

Edit 2: Try to wear colors that stands out from the Cali desert so you are visible.

Edit 3: Always stay together as a group! Do NOT split up unless you absolutelly have to.

Edit 4: Mark where you're going so Search and Rescue can track you. You can lay rocks on the ground to form arrows to indicate the direction you're heading, tie pieces of fabric on branches, etc.

I put a folding knife in that pocket. The pocket is so tight though that when I need the knife it is often too hard to get it out so I just walk across the room to get a pair of scissors...

There are so many knives and pocket tools, and what you like depends on how you're going to use it and what your general aesthetic is.

Trimming nails? Opening envelopes? Tightening screws? Cutting wire? Peeling oranges? Fending off wolverines?

Wood? Steel? Plastic?

Tell us what you want to use it for, and what material you prefer.

Here are a few of my favorites:

Great combination of tools, including good phillips:

I'm a fan of the Executive, which is very slim and has about a 2" main blade. It comes in black, too. If you want a bit more knife and don't mind losing the toothpick/tweezers and scissors, the Cadet is popular for good reason. Among the keychain size knives, my favorite is the Rambler, for packing all the most important (to me, anyway) tools into a very small package.

u/Lazek · 4 pointsr/EDC

Without any preferences on weight or size, my immediate answer is the Zero Tolerance 0350.

u/TOUCHER_OF_SHEEP · 4 pointsr/knives

For cutting boxes, you're getting into medium use, not light use. For assisted, you're going to want a Kershaw at that price range- they're the kings of the budget assisted knife.

Some recommendations: Kershaw Clash, the Kershaw Burst, the Kershaw Drone, or the Kershaw Volt II. The Clash is going to be the strongest out of those options.

If you're willing to sacrifice speed (and the assisted open) for price, the Kershaw Kurai is only $12. If you'll also sacrifice the one handed opening, the Cold Steel Kudu is legitimately one of the very best knives on the market for under $15, and will only run you $8.50.

Feel free to respond with questions, comments or concerns. I'll try to get to them as soon as possible.

u/freeshavocadew · 4 pointsr/knives

Well, first, congratulations on becoming a LEO. I am not one myself, but I have had a few convos with them and I'm going to start by giving you a couple of things to consider. The first one is, this knife will be a tool, right? A tool is used for all sorts of tasks, some it wasn't intended for like prying, scraping, or breaching/otherwise opening something that wouldn't the best tool for the job. One LEO I spoke with mentioned having to use his knife to do some limited demolition to a couple of walls in a trailer to find drugs. Stabbing through sheet rock, hitting studs, and nails and shit like that. I might suggest having a small pry bar as, you know, your tool that rides with at least, maybe find a belt pouch or way to carry it on your person. Better to have and not need than need and not have on this. Another thing, you might consider starting off with a more affordable knife, a beater. There are several reasons - tools you have on the job can be damaged or lost, and with a cheap beater you won't cry when that happens, you may need to hand it over as evidence in an investigation (used in self defense, etc.) and handing over your favorite knife can be painful even if you do eventually have it returned to you, you will already know about how LEOs and lawyers are not your best friends and having a big ol' scary knife may raise an eyebrow or two even in your position, and FINALLY there's the fact that you may be required to loan your knife out or use it in such a way that would ruin it. Any time you loan a tool out, it's great to expect to be returned in the same condition, but it's not always the case. Additionally, you may find you need it for an emergency, like in a vehicle fire or such a thing, mostly I'm imagining fire-related emergencies. A lot of knives are made with plastic scales which will melt all to shit but is technically still able to be used. This is unlikely, I know, but you're more likely to be there than me, so it is what it is.

After all that, I do have some recommendations!

Kershaw Clash - currently listed at ~$22, it's a fair knife for the money. It's spring assisted opening, a little larger both in size as well as handling (bad for finer cutting manipulation) but would be a great knife to get started with and treat as a beater. Would also serve as entry level EDC and would get you a lot of quick handling experience for the type of knife you'd actually want to get!

Kershaw Blur is a really well known knife by the knife community, combining quite a few really nice points at once. Currently listed at ~$58 (this model), this is also a great knife for someone looking for an all arounder. The blade steel is a little better than the Clash and several other offers from the cheaper side of knives, the scales are really comfortable for medium to large hands, and it doesn't break the bank. In my personal opinion it's probably one of if not the best knife for the money.

Kizer Vanguard is a different blade shape than the previous two, a much more classic style with a drop point. Currently this is on sale for ~$44 and this knife has a variety of handle colors available, which I think is neat. Based on my EDC use, it seems to be quite nice!

CRKT M21-12G has a few variations available with a similar size offered there as well as plain edge versus serrations. Personally I find serrations difficult to sharpen so I avoid them on my knives, but your mileage may vary. This knife is currently ~$46 and is worth it. This is a thicc chunk of steel with a thiccer handle even though the steel liners are milled out. Having taken it apart and put it back together a few times, I find this knife very easy to clean and service.

Ontario Knife Company Rat-1 is no frills and a solid knife. This is currently selling for ~$22 and is worth every penny. There's a few different models with the price varying quite a bit but overall it's below $40. This knife is a large chunk of metal with the scales and thick plastic liners too. However, there are etsy shops that make more custom liners that might be less chunky. Will likely cost more than you paid for the knife, but eh, whatever. This will be harder to lose, I think, since it's so large.

I hope one or more of these suggestions is helpful!

Mora No. 2 Classic. Light, cheap, and great quality.

If you want something a little heavier get the 2000. This is a heavy duty knife, don't let the plastic handle fool you.

u/jceez · 4 pointsr/knives

Mora classic #2

I got it because its $15. I do very little to take care of it (basically just wipping it once on my jeans before putting it back into the sheath) not caring if it gets messed up because its $15. Ive had the knife for about 5 years now with no problems.

u/bdof · 4 pointsr/Survival

this is what I carry now and I swear by it. Simple. Reliable. Out of the box, Mora's are the sharpest knives you'll find. I like the Classic 2's wooden handle because it doesn't disintegrate like rubber. And it's easy on the eyes.

This Mora knife has become my favorite. Incredibly sharp and tough, at $9 you can buy several and stash them in handy locations.

u/400HPMustang · 4 pointsr/EDC

Discreet and light weight are also subjective. Do you carry a bag on you every day? or are you wearing cargo pants every day? or does all this have to get stuffed in the pockets of your jeans?

A lot of these things are completely personal choices and as such you might take a step back and evaluate what you have and consider what you find wrong with your current choices.

You might start with an Altoids tin FAK or Altoids tin survival kit

Knives...small, inexpensive, discreet, unassuming. A few come to mind

CRKT Squid

Keshaw Shuffle

Wallet. What's wrong with the one you have now? or do you just want a fancy new one? All my life my leather bi-fold wallets have served me well. Only had two in over 20 years.

Flashlights are good. You can go knock off or Streamlight.

Pens. People recommend Fisher Space Pens such as the one I linked. They're quality pens, durable, stylish and refillable. I personally carry grey Bic disposables because people steal them or I lose them.

Multi-tool...I suggest Leatherman. Again it's subjective based on the tools that you need. Take a look at the Leatherman website. They have a good tool selector based on size and number of tools you want/need. My Skeletool CX has always served me well.

A way to carry keys? What's wrong with how you carry them now? If you're stuffing them in your pocket traditional key rings are still fine. Carrying them of body? on a bag? Then some sort of carabiner works, like the Keybiner or some variation. Don't want something rattling around? The Key-bar is nice if you don't have giant keys.

u/ARKnife · 4 pointsr/knives

From your posting history I saw you like Japanese stuff, so a Higonokami would be a good choice for you (and it would be legal in most places it is legal to carry a pocket knife).

For the record, I feel the same that the Cryo is too slippery - which is why I'm super glad Kershaw released a G10 version of it last year.

I also agree that the Tenacious is just a bit too big for EDC - and they do make the Persistence, which is a shrunken version of the Tenacious, with a 2.75 inch blade vs the Tenacious' 3-3/8 inch blade. If you wanna go even smaller, the Ambitious has a 2.25" blade. All 3 knives share a similar design (though the Ambitious is small enough that the proportions might look a little weird to some).

A few other knives of note that are standouts in the sub-$50 price range:

  • CRKT Ripple - Ken Onion design with a more-traditional drop point blade, IKBS, 8Cr14MoV. Usually on most people's "Under $50" list.

  • Kershaw Leek - Again, a little slippery and still Speedsafe but a slightly weaker torsion bar so not as forceful. Some people have issues with broken tips since they're a little thin, but this thing was the best under $50 when it came out.

  • Ontario RAT 1 - At $25 this thing is a pretty great package, if not a little big. 3.5" blade, but it's AUS-8 if you don't like the 8Cr China steels (even if they are pretty similar).

  • SOG Flash II - again, a 3.5 inch, AUS-8 blade. Assisted opening, but much less forceful than Speedsafe.

  • The Kershaw Emerson CQC-6K has blown up since it's release and a lot of high speed low drag tactical types love it for EDC use. $25 makes it a pretty appealing choice and rock solid under $30.

  • The Spyderco Delica 4 is just a touch over $50, averaging about $60, but it's also a go-to knife in the $50 for many people. VG-10 steel on this one is a big selling point.

  • On the same hand, the Kershaw Blur is usually available for about $60, and for those looking for a big folder (seriously this thing is large) it's a great choice. Sandvik 14C28N as standard steel, also available with S30V for about $75.

    A few notes here

  • You'll see a lot of sub $50 knives using 8Cr13MoV or 8Cr14MoV. The main difference is a little more Chromium in the 8Cr14MoV, leading to a little more corrosion resistance. A lot of people loved the Skyline, but there were a few issues with minor rust spots on the knives, leading to many companies switching to 8Cr14MoV for some of their knives (most of the budget Kershaws are 8Cr14MoV now).

  • Kershaw has many many options for budget folders under $50, for all kinds of aesthetic tastes. The Chill, Thermite, Link, Oso Sweet, etc. I've owned a handful of Kershaws, and loved all of them, especially for the price.

  • The 8Cr steels (13MoV and 14MoV) are pretty much on par with AUS-8, especially from CRKT, Spyderco, and Kershaw who all do a good job on their heat treats. There's a slight difference in hardness (3 to 4 HRC difference by most counts), but really they're nearly identical for all intents and purposes, mainly sharpening and edge retention. Some people just prefer AUS-8 because they don't like so called "China steel."

ETA a few more links and some clarification of my still-awake-at-5am rambling.

Buy a Kershaw. They are cheap and it'll get you into the habit of putting it on your person every day. Once you get used to it, find a blade that fits your needs the best.

I'd recommend the Kershaw Shuffle 2. It's small ,light and has a decently thick blade. The bottle opener is garbage design, but I use the spade end for prying on stuff during work.

I got this as a gift for a friend and he has constantly been singing its praises and saying how impressed he is with it.

I’m personally not a fan of the slick handle style, I need some grip but it’s very very well made.

I'm not sure on laws in the UK but in my experience Kershaw makes some of the best knives under $25 or so to start with. I like the shuffle and shuffle II but they have a pretty love/hate relationship in this sub.

In general, I don't recommend you plan to use a knife as protection. Running shoes and a strong flashlight would be a much more viable plan. Especially, If you are apparently not trained enough to know the "names and stuff" surrounding which knives would be best for your defense techniques.

All that being said, a defensive blade within your budget should have wave deployment capabilities. So, Kershaw Emerson CQC is my recommendation.

There's room in the bags to carry food as well. Everything in the small bucket would last us a few days and there's room to get everything thrown in our bags. The only reason it's not in the bags now is because the lifetime of the food will be reduced if we take it out of the original bucket.

I'm totally getting some of those compressed tissues now. I didn't even know those existed.

The filter I got was this bugger. It had good reviews on Amazon and came with the plastic canteens.
https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B06WWQMRFY/ref=oh_aui_search_detailpage?ie=UTF8&psc=1

Some of the items from the bag were grabbed from around the house. The deoderant is one of them. I'll likely get a smaller, more mildly scented antiperspirant to replace it. Part of the urban survival part may include blending in, which may include not smelling bad. I'm thinking of switching the urban bag over to some kind of duffel with shoulder straps as the hiking backpack (also sourced from around the house) is a bit of an eyesore if walking around a city. Both bags are comfortable and aren't overly heavy for people go go on hikes with much regularity.

As for the knives I've got a real, full tang knife, sheath, and whetstone that I may sharpen up and include in the pack as well if everything is still light with clothes added. I picked up that small knife on Amazon because it was simple and lightweight.
https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00178CS4K/ref=oh_aui_search_detailpage?ie=UTF8&psc=1

The knife and camp axe, btw, are dull as shit. I'm going to take them out and sharpen them this weekend so they could actually be useful if I ever need to use them.

I agree, build you own kit. Below is my take. Know that some of those tools are not for every day use in networking, but who can resist getting more tools? Also, if you get all of these I realize it will be over $200. So, just use this list as a guide not a definitive list.

BAGS

u/TwoStepsFromThursday · 3 pointsr/knives

For a folder, either a Spyderco ParaMilitary 2, Benchmade Freek, or a ZT 0350 will all be top-quality knives that can take a helluva beating.

For a fixed blade, either an ESEE 6 or a Fallkniven A1 should handle everything you could ever do to it.

u/rsynv5 · 3 pointsr/wildwhittlers

A Morakniv Classic is a pretty great choice. Comfortable grip, well made, cheap. You just have to be aware that it is carbon steel, so it will rust if you leave it wet, and the sheath it comes in is kinda crappy. If you don't mind those two things, a mora would be great for you. If you'd rather a folding knife, the other one I can recommend is an Opinel. While that particular knife is carbon steel, you can get the Opinel in stainless as well, and it has pretty much all the same advantages of a Mora.

All that being said, so long as your Swiss Army knife is sharp, and you start on an easy bit of wood, soft, no knots, straight grain, you probably don't need a new knife.

u/bwinter999 · 3 pointsr/BuyItForLife

Well the biggest issue is that they have a hollow handle. This means that the cavity of the handle is empty and can be dangerous/prone to breaking. Most people dislike the bear grylls series because he is somewhat of a poser when it comes to actual survival skills. However the knives have been heralded as comfortable and honestly they aren't as terrible as the benchmade fanboys make them out to be. I am completely sure you could use it just fine for most tasks. I actually have the folding version and while it isn't my favorite knife it isn't bad especially for 1/10 the price of a benchmade/spyderco. Even if the knife isn't ideal don't think for a second you couldn't use it effectively. Knives in general are really only a sharpened chunk of metal. Anybody telling you differently either wants your money or someone trying to convince themselves that $300 on a knife makes it somehow magically better or invincible.

Don't fall into the "I need a $200+ knife to survive" fallacy though many are the same and the only real thing that matters in any cutting tools performance is

  • Material (most knives are cheap on this so just try to read up on steel/ hardness. You most likely do not want a stainless steel (high carbon instead). I prefer a 63hrc blade but then it will be brittle so you cannot pound on it without it chipping but the higher hardness will make it suck to sharpen but nice to hold and edge/get sharp. Also higher hrc-hardness can chip in cold climates so you might have to warm the blade. Most knives/axes are about 58 hrc which is a pretty good balance. Just remember there is no free lunch and everything has drawbacks. You don't need the best steel just make sure it will work)

  • Geometry (For a camping knife you probably want a scandi or convex grind. Most knives are a double bevel which is cheaper to produce but doesn't quite match up to the other grinds. If you can't find one don't worry it isn't a huge deal just because you don't have a $500 knife doesn't mean you cannot cut a tree with it.)

Ok there are more criteria like handle, finish, comfort, economy but generally those are the big two that determine how a knife will preform. Lots of manufacturers want you to spend a fortune but it just isn't necessary. Mora makes a great knife that has so many uses and is so cheap/replaceable you can almost afford to lose it (every penny saved can be spent on items used more often like a bag or boots). It is a bit small for "survival" but personally I would get a hatchet to serve as a larger cutting tool ( This one is $40 and made by hultafors bruks a pretty decent axe company and combined with the mora is still $50 total much less than some of the acclaimed knives). I don't buy into the big knife hype simply because I find them cumbersome to use for general tasks which I find myself doing much more of than hacking trees for survival. Your mileage may vary. If you really want a big knife the above suggested K-bar and Ontario are pretty great suggestions and the military style is very hard to beat for usability.
u/shunthemask · 3 pointsr/knifeclub

I have the Morakniv Craftline Q Allround. It's pretty great, especially for the price.

u/rule9 · 3 pointsr/knives

Get a basic Mora. They're made to be work knives. Sharp and sharpen easily. Won't last forever under heavy usage, but will last a good while and are soooo cheap to replace compared to comparable alternatives. (Few knives will last for ever under heavy usage anyway - you'll sharpen them away if nothing else.)

I'd go for the Mora Robust but you could also consider the Mora 511 or other cheaper Mora models for a thinner and slicier blade.

Also the Scandi grind is good for carving.

u/LuckJury · 3 pointsr/EDC

This is the Sanrenmu 710, and holy crap is it an incredible little knife for the price. I'm seriously considering buying two or three more and having various pimp jobs done to them.

The only gripe I have (which is kinda silly considering the pricetag) is that the handle is too slick and becomes "sweaty" feeling in the hand relatively quickly.

Seriously though, wow, buy one and skip a dinner if you have to.

u/king_human · 3 pointsr/knifeclub

The Ka-Bar Dozier folder is a solid choice for around 20 bucks. You can also grab some Sanrenmu 7010's for about 10 bucks each here.

If autos are your thing, I hear good things about Ganzo's offerings.

Spyderco has a value line called Byrd. I like their Cara Cara 2 and they offer quite a few variations.

My favorite knives in the value sphere are the Ontario RAT 1 (or 2, if you like 'em smaller), and the Kershaw Leek (slightly outside your price range, but they are very good knives).

Happy hunting and congratulations!

Of the knives you’ve posted, Urban Trapper.

A couple people have recommended Spyderco Delica and Dragonfly. I realize if you’ve never had a Spyderco, the design with the hole can be really off putting. At first I hated how they looked.

Once you handle a Spyderco, it all makes sense. I will recommend the Native 5, it’s still got the amazing ergonomics of a Spyderco, but it’s a little easier on the eyes in my opinion.

The Rambler is my fav. small SAK. It's just like the Rally I linked above, except it also has scissors.

https://www.amazon.com/Victorinox-Swiss-Rambler-Pocket-Knife/dp/B000FNFXQS/ref=sr_1_1

u/db00 · 2 pointsr/EDC

I love my Victorinox Rambler. The important features to me are a basic knife, phillips head driver and toothpick. The bottle opener, flat head driver, scissors and tweezers are just a bonus. My day consists of opening boxes (knife), adjusting screws (phillips driver) and working with clients (toothpick). I usually carry other items to assist with these tasks but I always carry my keys so I will always be able to perform them, even if I forget those other tools. It's really small as well.

u/NearlyLegit · 2 pointsr/multitools

Edit - Just seen your edit, and I should definitely pay more attention to the body of posts. Enjoy the 580! I'm going to keep this up incase other people might find it useful.

If you're grooming nails or beard I'd say the Micra given its focus on scissors as a primary tool however, due to the extra width from the additional tools, it's a little bulky. Something like the Victorinox Classic SD may be much more manageable size-wise, and it has the benefit of carrying both tweezers and the toothpick, however the scissors may be a little small for beard trimming.

In a similar vein to the Micra, the Squirt PS4 is a little bulky, but has a very usable nail (wood/metal) file, as well as a cracking little knife; unfortunately the scissors tend to have a 'wobble' between the blades, meaning that unless you're paying attention to what you're cutting, you can have a gap between the scissor blades as you're closing the scissors, giving a poor, unclean cut (and giving you a rough nail if you're in the process of clipping). The Classic SD doesn't suffer from this given the scissor blades close flushly.

Looking at the comments, the Victorinox 580 looks like a winner, however (this is pure IIRC) the scissor spring in this may be more susceptible to breaking under heavy torque, over the type in the Victorinox Executive, which also has a couple of other tools. Although the Executive annoyingly has the knife opening toward the keys (however the scissors open away from it, so for your purposes this might not be an issue). A potential solution to this would be to go with the Victorinox Rambler, which has all the benefits of the Classic SD, is a tiny tiny tiny tiny bit thicker, and it comes with the combo tool which includes a magnetised (head) Phillips screwdriver, bottle opener, and wire cutter. That last tool has absolutely nothing to do with beard/nail trimming, but it may be useful in initially lining up screws which you can then drive in with the Skeletool.

I'm in a very similar boat to you and I've just decided to give up on my PS4 because the scissors just piss me off when I'm trying to use them with my left hand. I have a Classic SD which I took out of rotation due to wanting something a little sturdier, but ironically (given the play in the PS4 scissors), I feel like the scissors on that might be better. Because I love Leatherman and primarily find myself using the scissors more than any other tool, I'm giving the Micra a shot, but for tweezers I've just bought an Uncle Bill's seen as I end up dealing with splinters more than anything else..

Chances are it's going to come full circle and I'll end up back at the Classic SD I already own, but half the fun of multitools/EDC is experimenting with what works, and I know I'll have a couple of kickarse tools waiting in the wing if I want to mix it up again. That said, the Rambler does look pretty tempting!

I have the Cold Steel Pendleton Lite Hunter Black Poly Handle and really like it. I wanted a lightweight, and inexpensive, alternative to my Gerber which went MIA after I moved. So far it has kept a very nice edge, and sharpens quick and easy.

The knife is surprisingly lightweight compared to my Gerber (which has since resurfaced). The blade is thinner and it does not have a full tang. For the price, I would absolutely recommend. We will see how it holds up to a few years of use, but if the first year is any indication, I see keeping this around as my primary on-the-trail knife.

I also picked up this one at the same time in my hunt for an inexpensive blade, but was pretty disappointed. The reviews are right on for both knives, so check those out.

For multi-tools, I don't think you can beat Leatherman. I've got a mini version branded by RadioShack (comes with wire strippers) that I have had for 8-9 years now. My favorite folding knife goes to the SAT collection (assisted opening) by SOG, and I have no complaints about any of my Fiskars/Gerber products (I have two axes and a knife at present).

2.) Something reminiscent of rain: This hair accessory from my Silly Fun list! I don't know if they're meant to, but the blue bits remind me of raindrops. <3

3.) Something food related that is unusual: Food picks from my Silly Fun list! Maybe not super unusual in Japan, but here in America I doubt you'd see them often.

4.) Something on your list that is for someone other than yourself: This book off my Books wishlist of course! It's for my husband, who's a huge fan of the Elder Scrolls games. I like them, too, but I doubt I'd ever read this.

5.) A book I should read: The Invisible Gorilla, again, off my Books list. I read almost a third of this book while hidden in a book store one day. It's an absolutely fascinating study (or rather, collection of studies) about how much trust we place in our own faulty intuitions.

11.) Something that would have a profound impact on your life and help you to achieve your current goals: This book which is, strangely, on my Semi-Practical list. I'm a Math/Physics major, but I haven't been in school in quite a while. I'm about to go back very soon, and I'm a little petrified of failing out.

12.) One of those pesky Add-On items: Red Heart yarn from my Crochet wishlist!

13.) The most expensive thing on your list. Your dream item: The PS4 from my Video Games list. I'm an avid gamer. Video games are how I relax. It's one of the few things that, no matter how crappy my day was, always manages to raise my spirits and help me forget about it all.

14.) Something bigger than a bread box: Apparently bread boxes are way bigger than I thought, so I'll go with this desk off my Semi-Practical wishlist. Surely that's big enough! XD

15.) Something smaller than a golf ball: Turtle earrings off my Silly Fun list! THEY'RE SO CUTE!

16.) Something that smells wonderful: Teavana's Blueberry Bliss tea off my Silly Fun list (yet again). If you've never been in a Teavana store, go this second and just...inhale. <3

17.) A (SFW) toy: Frog mitt from my Practical list. I'm fairly certain this isn't supposed to be a toy, but I get the feeling I'm going to spend more time using it as a puppet than as an oven mitt.

18.) Something that would be helpful for going back to school: This backpack from my Semi-Practical list! I want it so badly!! IT'S STUDIO GHIBLI HOW AWESOME IS THAT?

I’m currently carrying a Zero Tolerance 0350 (but am thinking about a smaller ZT or their budget brand, Kershaw) and it’s truly a jack of all trades. The blade is long, chunky, and more than ample for SD scenarios, EDC tasks, and backwoods hard use like batoning wood. It’s S30V, which is a nice, durable tool steel that can get extremely sharp and then blunts to a solid working edge between sharpenings. The curved edge incorporates the theory of a parang basically, with most of the hard work coming from the first large curve, keeping the tip and the rear curve sharp for detailed tasks. Furthermore, it’s the smoothest and fastest spring assist I’ve encountered. I like it better than autos. With how robust a good modern flipper is, I don’t see a need for a fixed blade in most situations, so I’d save the weight and bulk of a sheath.
THAT BEING SAID I have informal knife training from a special forces vet, I still don’t think it’s nearly enough for me to consider it a viable option. I absolutely never would use my knife in a SD scenario unless I was out of options, including picking up available environmental objects with more range like a 2”x4” if time allows. I do admit though, I like the ability to pull out and conceal a small weapon covered by my sleeve or the like at a tight space like an ATM, so I have something at the ready that isn’t a gun and doesn’t need the space pepper spray does. This is mostly to create space and get the assailant to back off so the situation can be assessed (if a gun, for example, is still needed because the treat isn’t neutralized) not necessarily disabling the assailant. Another pro to pocket folder carry. Remember, a knife is a deadly weapon and if you brandish it to another person you better have legal grounds for self defense.

I've got one too! I think it is a little too big for pocket carry but it is easily concealable. Mine goes better with the ZT.

u/Nilots · 2 pointsr/Bushcraft

Great set. Though if you plan on using that saw often you may want to replace it with a higher quality model. It's a great bang for your buck saw, but in my experience it does not stand up to continued use well. I took mine to work (I work for a tree company) to test it out and it lost a few teeth/started to dull after only 10-15 cuts.

Silky makes great pruning saws, though more expensive ($40~). That type of saw is mostly suited to cutting green wood, however. If you plan on using it mostly for dead stuff (firewood) it may be worth investing in something like a bowsaw that is designed with that purpose in mind.

Disclaimer: I have no personal experience with that particular bowsaw and cannot personally attest to it's quality. Though it does seem well regarded.

Edit: That knife seems nice, but from what I can tell it is not made of high carbon steel so it cannot be used for firestarting on it's own. It may be worth investing in something cheap like a Mora so that you may use it with a flint

u/NGC2359 · 2 pointsr/Bushcraft

Not to be that guy... but knowledge is the cheapest tool. But you probably know this! I'm just reiterating for other viewers. A compass and a map, along with some compass-using skills, would be my absolute first pick for going out in the wild. A knife would be #2 (a close #2), but most of the time you'll never be so far away from civilization that you can't just walk to safety. If you are, and don't have all the tools, you're screwed anyway. But that's more for r/survival rather than r/bushcraft.

So then I'd say get a Mora. The Mora Classic 2 can get to your front door within a week for ~$20, usually less. It's tough as nails, super functional, and classy as hell with it's wooden handle. Be a little carefu because it doesn't have a guard.

But if you're looking for other, more functional items, get yourself a steel cup and a few large trashbags. The trashbags can be used to collect rainwater, as a makeshift tent, maybe a bivy bag, and poke some holes in it and you have a parka.

The steel cup is just the epitome of bushcraft to me: You go into the woods, start a safe fire, and make yourself a cup of tea while enjoying the bush. You can make wind-shields from sticks and saplings (knowledge). Make a fire using wood you've collected (knowledge and matches). And then create a rain shelter to sleep in (knowledge, sticks, and fallen leaves). But what fun is all of that if you don't get to do something neat? Boil some snow or rainwater and make yourself some bush tea. Steel cups are cheap and allow you to do a lot of things in terms of food and water.

u/genericdude999 · 2 pointsr/Survival

> I'm too lazy to build a kit

Easy peasy. Just get a SOL kit for the small items. Then I would add a cheap sleeping bag and maybe a knife and Bic lighter and some bottled water. Done, for about $10 under OP's kit and you've got better quality stuff.

If you wanna get fancy, you could use the $10 to waterproof the bottom half of the sleeping bag to protect it from the damp ground. Then the Heatsheet can be your shelter.

u/White_pants · 2 pointsr/AskReddit

I find there is one exception to the rule with knifes. The swedish Mora kniv is cheap and wickedly sharp. We have one in our boat which is in the sea for a bit over 5 years now and is still going good.

I don't have experience with it, but I've used other Kershaw blades. They're no Benchmades, but they do the trick. I've heard great things about the s30v version of the knife (no serrations or glass breaker).

I carry one of these: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00EU8ML46/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o03_s01?ie=UTF8&psc=1

That little flipper thing is the thing I use my knife for the most. My office is in an eight-story building, but our floor is like 40% my company, and the rest is other smaller offices/startups. Everyone is connected by the same hallway, shaped like the number 8 (but squared, not round). Anyways.

There are four mens rooms on the floor, each consisting of two sinks, two urinals and two stalls. Personally, I don't like to poop when there's someone in the stall right next to me. On a road trip at a rest stop? Fine, whatever. Not at work. I want to be able to take my time, look at my phone, etc. I don't want to hear the gentle sounds of someone grunting out a loaf next to me during my poop time.

The doors to the stalls lock from the inside, but they have a flush flathead-type thing on the outside of the door, I assume to open the door up if someone ODs or something in there.

I discovered that if I locked the inner stall door from the outside (with the flipper of the knife), then went into the other stall and pooped, people would walk in, assume both stalls were in use (since they could see my feet in the outer stall, and the door to the inner stall was shut/locked), and leave.

I now poop alone, and it's glorious.

$65: [Spyderco Delica] (https://www.amazon.com/Spyderco-Delica4-Lightweight-Ground-PlainEdge/dp/B0052HQPWS)

The knives I linked are all folding locking knives. The shuffle would be harder to sharpen because of the tanto style blade.

For sharpening, most people either get the [Spyderco Sharpmaker] (https://www.amazon.com/Spyderco-Tri-Angle-Sharpmaker/dp/B004HIZKHE) or the [Lansky Diamond Stone System] (https://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B000B8L6LS/ref=sxts2?ie=UTF8&qid=1483915806&sr=2&pi=AC_SX236_SY340_FMwebp_QL65). If you get the Lansky system, get the pedestal to go with it else your hands will be cramping.

Honestly I suggest getting a knife under $100. Once you get over $100 you start getting into supersteels. Supersteels are hard to sharpen for beginners and if you don't know what you're doing, you're likely to ruin the edge.

You don't need a serrated edge. Most folks here would recommend against it even if you did want to cut rope.

For cleaning and caring, I just put a drop of gun oil on the blade and mechanism. You don't really need to do this though. Unless you see rust or your knife is having trouble opening, you could skip it.

u/captainredbeered · 2 pointsr/EDC

That's really awesome. I only ask because it's an affordable knife and usually that adjective doesn't end up in the same sentence as Damascus.

Maybe I missed the market though and it's more common, but in any case great knife, I might pick that one up.

Only concern I have is it keeping am edge. I've only ever had one kershaw knife (Kershaw Shuffle II (8750BLKBW); Blackwash Multifunction Folding Pocket Knife, 2.6 In. 8Cr13MoV Stainless Steel Tanto Blade, Includes Thumbstud and Reversible Pocketclip; 3 oz. https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00TUCPWZM?ref=yo_pop_ma_swf), and it didn't show with nor hold a edge very well. However, it's an entirely different price point, and metal for that matter, so I'm wondering if that makes a difference.

u/Darkdistroi · 2 pointsr/knives

Does it have to be spring assisted? Most spring assists are there to make up for bad manufacturing/cheap parts and are more likely to fail in many cases, and beyond that I personally can't come up with a multitool that does that.

I can think of several knives that have various tools built in or multi tools built to be operated with one hand though:

So, what we teach in our self defense courses as far as weapons go, is to use whatever you have like an ice pick, with a thumb over one end. You basically strike down at whatever you can (usually a hand or arm) and re-load. It's fast and noncommittal. It's strange setting it written, but you probably get the idea.

It's long, so it sticks out the end of your hand so there's something to concentrate the force you generate with your strike. It's thin because something thicker won't ride in your pocket as easy.

Plus... It's cheap. We try to advocate stuff that works, but isn't so expensive that you don't get one.

This knife from Kershaw is just about perfect, really no matter the cost. It just happens to be cheap.

Northwest Territorial Mint makes Scouting Coins - I'm not personally into them, but many people are. They make a simple venturing coin and also one with the venturing oath engraved.

Keep it light, keep it simple.

  • Knife: CRKT Squit ($16)

This small knife does the job without taking up much bulk in your pocket or EDC. And if you misplace it, it won't cost an arm and a leg to replace.

  • Light: Olight i3E ($10)

This light is fairly bright and is easy to use. Twist on/off. No fancy modes with this light. Waterproof and shock resistant in a compact package that runs on just a AAA battery. Also easy to replace if it mysteriously disappears.

  • Pen: Pilot G2 ($11 for 12 pack, around $1 per pen)

This pen doesn't need much of a story. It's cheap. It writes smooth. It conquers.

  • Watch: Casio W800H-1AV ($12)

This is a nice little watch for the price. It's tough and tells the time even in harsh conditions. If you somehow manage to break it or the battery dies, it's not going to break the bank to replace.

Don't carry much in the wallet department so a rubber band or binder clip would do the job. That'd be less than $0.10. Do the math!

So that's a grand total of $50. Excluding a phone or CCW since OP stated that isn't affected.

Not bad for a few quality items that will get you through a day to day basis easily.

    Sorry if I missed anything!

Edit: Added a watch to the mix. Added descriptions for all items. Formatting!

What do you use the Skeletool most for?

If you use the knife on it constantly and daily, then yeah, get a good knife. If the stuff that you do cut makes you nervous with the Skeletool then definitely get a dedicated knife.

If you use the bit driver or pliers on the Skeletool the most then you probably don't need to carry a dedicated knife.

Give the Sage 5 a good look as well if you are considering the Para3. I'd also strongly recommend finding a Spyderco/Benchmade/Zero Tolerance dealer and fondling a bunch of knives before making a decision on which knife to buy.

If you have never carried a dedicated knife before it would be a good idea to buy a cheaper knife or two before spending $100+ on a knife.

Try some under $30 knives, pick one that looks like something you would like to carry, and pick something that is dang near the polar opposite. It will let you know what you like in a knife much cheaper. Differences in blade size, blade shape, handle shape and how they are used might change your opinion on what you think you need in a knife after using a dedicated knife for awhile. After that you can make a truly informed decision on a high-end knife.

Fixed blades? Without getting too deep into it an ESEEor a Ka-Bar will last you forever.

Or you could just go with you know... An icepick

u/adamdanger · 1 pointr/knifeclub

$12.95 actually. I put it on par fit and finish wise with most $50 knives.

u/bjornkeizers · 1 pointr/knifeclub

It's probably hit or miss. Nothing weird, since I've had varying sharpness on Spyderco and Benchmade as well, so I always figure on sharpening it anyway. A Spyderco Sharpmaker is a great investment.

This thread actually got me to buy two more Sanrenmus just now :D

Completed an order for two 7010's which are modelled after Sebenza's. Look up the reviews on Amazon for that one:

http://www.amazon.com/Sanrenmu-7010LUC-SA-Pocket-Folding-Knife/dp/B00GMMPIK2

Scores a 4.7 with 83 ratings. Which is a .1 better rating then a Benchmade Griptilian and the same as the Mini-Grip gets on Amazon.

If you compare the prices, 8,31 USD which I paid for the Sanrenmu versus 98 USD for the Griptilian on Amazon, it really is an amazing deal of a knife. Even accounting for 'nice for the price' reviews, some people really seem to take a liking to these Chinese clones.

We'll see if I like these as much as my 7063.

u/CosmicCharlie99 · 1 pointr/knives

I forgot Ruike, the RKEP801SF is on my list. I discovered the flashlight company that makes Fenix is producing the brand.

u/Soggy_Pud · 1 pointr/knifeclub

Heres the full size clone.

Heres a small version.

Those SRM 710's use to be like $6-8. I've bought dozens of them and given them out to people. Really a great knife. Its still totally worth it at $15.

u/tollsforthe · 1 pointr/knifeclub

If you just like the look of the knife but don't want to drop $225, the new Kershaw/emerson collaboration is very similar in structure:

So you seem pretty knowledgeable, and I trust your opinion. I’ve narrowed it down to 6 I’m choosing between, with some definitely more likely than others. Three are folders , and three are fixed . While I no longer trust MTech for folders, their blade kept decently well, and there’s not a lot of room for screws loosening on fixed blades. I also know Elk Ridge was never mentioned in the tread, but I’ve owned one fixed and one folder from them and they were both great knives, I have faith in the brand

u/suitaroh · 1 pointr/knifeclub

Well I was going to say Skyline when I saw the title. But having read that, Kershaw Emerson CQC-6K? Or maybe the Injection? Though both have rather vanilla blade shapes. Possibly try someting different and get an Opinel #8? And looks thru here, it's the sub's list of recommendations and covers most of the stuff in a given range.

u/CokeCanNinja · 1 pointr/knives

My personal preferance is towards the 6K in that series.

u/Roarence · 1 pointr/knifeclub

Don't get that. If you want to wow him, definately get something special, like a Spyderco Delica Wave

The wave, patented by Emerson (famous high end brand), allows knives to be deployed the moment out of the pocket by itself. See if he owns one already, if not, that is a great choice.

Any of the Kershaw X Emerson CQC series is also a great choice, with the same wave feature. I always get these as gifts for people, both knife nut and non-nut. They always seem to be wowed by the wave feature. Its just my go-to for a knife gift.

Don't overthink this, OP. This is a 12 year old. As others have said, get something that locks for safety reasons. However, As someone who has also given a knife to his son, I'd advise against spending too much on it - this knife WILL get treated improperly and/or lost. That said, CRKT has a lot of really good for the money (sub $40 range) "beginner" knives, and being that they use 8CR13MoV on most all of their blades it'll be easier to sharpen if you're planning on teaching how to do that as well. Also, there is the Spyderco Tenacious to consider. Let him learn to handle and respect something like that first, make him prove he's ready for something nicer. That said... ANY knife he gets he is gonna love, he's 12.

EDIT: The first knife I got for my son at the age of 10 was the CRKT Squid. Small, inexpensive, but still a decent little knife. And again, as it uses 8CR13MoV steel, it was pretty easy to fix the small nicks he ended up putting in the blade.

u/joeslide · 1 pointr/knives

I had a similar problem with picking a knife that wasn't huge and bulky in the pocket. I randomly came across the Kershaw Shuffle a few months back and love it. The knife is small enough where you can barely feel it clipped to your pocket and it still looks nice enough where people have given me compliments on it. I own the first generation shuffle but the shuffle 2 has a better look imo. Super cheap for a quality knife. Blade steel is fine for an EDC, and handle material looks close to G-10, which I would say is the best handle quality for grip. 3 inch blade, looks like it can be opened one handed from thumb stud.

Before making a purchase, check out the cheaper brands from Spyderco and Kershaw, they have $25 EDCs on sale, with same or better quality blade steel.

Here's a few that might be worth a look:

Sorry to hear that. Sounds like a 'workplace procedures' trap.

I always have three things: a pocket knife, a filled lighter, and a working pen. None of these are going to save my life or anything, but they come in handy for day-to-day stuff.

u/Kadin2048 · 1 pointr/gadgets

Pocket knife is a good thought if OP doesn't have one already.

Lots of threads around on them, and you can easily spend a hundred bucks or more, but I'd lean towards a cheap one. Anything you carry around with you all the time is likely to get lost eventually, and you don't want it to be totally irreplaceable.

Also don't get some freaky huge self-opening combat knife, people will think you're a psycho. And it'll wear holes in your pants. Something like the Ken Onion Chive is useful and won't look totally out of place in business casual clothes.

u/1432426 · 1 pointr/knives
u/SoupCanNort · 1 pointr/knives

When I read the post, the first thing that popped into my head was the Chive. They really are cool knives, HERE they are priced low enough to have them custom engraved (about $20 from your friendly neighborhood mall kiosk) with the initials of your Groomsmen!

Kershaw makes "good" production knives, and the Chive certainly is a cool design, it's different enough to stand out from the everyday groomsman gifts, I'd be happy if I got one! (because, I have three flasks, and 2 giant beer mugs from previous weddings I was apart of)

edit But that Case is damn sexy too!

Kershaw's always good. Be sure to get a half-serrated blade, and it's very handy if it's an automatic, one-handed opening is helpful in a pinch.

I own a half-serrated one of these that has served me well:

u/NoHelmet · 1 pointr/wicked_edge

That would be nice for some, but I just don't see it happening. If you're into SOG, Kershaw, Benchmade, Spyderco, or any of the high end knives you know what the difference is between the Kershaw Zero Tolerance Combat Folding Serrated Knife for $180 made with S30V stainless that will hold a 23 degree bevel all day long, and the Kershaw Kershaw Ken Onion Tactical Blur Folding Knife for $52 made from 13C26 stainless. The second one isn't a bad knife, but it won't come close to as sharp, or holding it's edge as long.

I think $50 SR's might turn guys off to the practice. They just wouldn't be as sharp, or hold their edge as long. That said, with the way Chinese and Indian steel has come up in quality in the last 10 years, if those boys get serious about making high quality razors, all bets are off because they might be able to make a high end product in the $50 price range.

Victorinox Rambler is a mini Swiss Army knife with knife, scissors, bottle opener, file with screwdriver tip, tweezers and toothpick for $22 on Amazon. The joke is how very useful it is while remaining tiny.

u/limitedmage · 1 pointr/EDC

I use the Victorinox Rambler as my keychain, it has a kinda measly bottle opener but it works and also has screwdrivers, scissors, and a tiny blade useful for opening boxes and letters.

u/Fendersocialclub · 1 pointr/knifeclub

Don't waste your money. Leatherman is low quality compared to Victorinox. I have a Micra and the scissors are not that good and dull quickly. If you want a smaller SAK check out the 58mm Rambler, which is simple and useful. If you want larger scissors then take a look at the Compact.

u/DemDude · 1 pointr/Filmmakers

On a similar note: The Victorinox Rambler, or it's sisters the Manager or Midnite Manager (weird names, I know), are tools that I never leave the house without. They're tiny, don't take up more space than two keys on a keyring, and they have a super-sharp all-purpose blade, scissors, screwdriver, magnetic philipps-screwdriver, bottle-opener, wire stripper, nailfile and a couple other things, depending on the version you get. Incredibly useful for all sorts of shit, including tightening screws to base plates. And they're pretty affordable, too. Plus, they come with lifetime warranties. They will even sharpen and refurbish them for nothing but packing & handling.

Have you considered ping even less bulky? Something like the SAK Rambler which is basically the SAK Classic + bottle opener/Phillips screwdriver. I've been eyeballing that one because I find even at only 2 oz, my leatherman squirt is heavier than I like for something in my pocket. The Rambler is less than an oz.

u/Zero1O1 · 1 pointr/EDC

I like to keep my EDC minimal... I don't like carrying a lot of things or having a lot of weight in my pocket, so I have tried to cut back to the bare essentials.

  • iPhone 4S. Using an app that turns on the LED (normally used as a camera flash), this is also my flashlight when needed.

  • Keys to my MINI Clubman S, house and office.

  • A SAK Rambler. I have tried a lot of little pocket multitools and nothing has beaten this. Has a knife, file, scissors, screwdrivers, tweezers and a bottle opener.

  • XTS Aluminum pen and stylus. I used to carry a Space Pen, but I like the feel of this much better and it also has a stylus for the iPhone. I swapped out the included ink (meh to gel inks) for a Papermate PHD ballpoint refill.

  • Leather wallet... I honestly don't even know who made it, but it is thin and holds my crap.

u/gpforlife · 1 pointr/Detroit

For what it's worth, I think you did the right thing.

Pepper spray doesn't do shit if the person has been sprayed before. I've been maced four times (don't ask). The last two guys who maced me were rent-a-cops and it was probably at least five-six years ago. I promise you they still have aches and pains from what I did to them. You mace a homeless dude, you'll just escalate the situation.

You deescalated the situation, then created distance, then left the area.

In a previous line of work, we were taught to deescalate, create distance and, act decisively (lethal force). You didn't have the final solution, but you made due with what you had.

I would suggest you carry a flip-out baton or a knife. It doesn't take a ton of proficiency in either to give you a critical edge. You're not going to fight off three NFL linebackers with them, but you wrap someone's ears with a baton or cut a person, and they're going to think twice about continuing to attack you. You'll need some basic education. Talk to Zander at 313 JuJitsu, tell him GP For Life sent you. Seriously. He's a good guy.

Alright here we go...now what I got, I tried to price compare and review compare. Some stuff may be better elsewhere but it's what I went with regardless.

There are some products that I already have from camping so I didn't feel the need to double up. I also plan on supplementing the packs with more food and obviously water as well as medicine, change of clothes and a few other things. I also plan on adding a few things to the medkit, more aspirin, some more realistic materials as well. So all in all I felt this was a pretty solid starter survival kit for most situations. Just something to grab for a few days if shit hits the fan. It's going in my truck where some other camping gear already is (Axe, shovel, wd-40, lighters, mace, knives)

Only product I would buy differently would be the backpack. I didn't realize it ships from China, I'd only buy somewhere else due to the 1 month shipping time. (I didn't catch that initially) there's some decent similarly priced backpacks available elsewhere that will be at your door within a few days.

On a boy scout camping trip, it rained pretty heavily overnight, and our tent fell down. I somehow never woke up, even with the tent collapsed on top of me. The other two guys in the tent had to get out and fix it in the pouring rain. I didn't know anything about it until the next day.

My favorite camping trip was a three-day float trip on the Buffalo River I took with three of my buddies in college. We brought a tent, but we ended up just sleeping on a tarp on the riverbank under the stars all three nights.

Anyway, here's a cool knife/firestarter I've had my eye on for a while. And here's a mini LED torch that might be handy.

And I promise to get outdoors, love my family and be kind to most of the animals...except for the insects. And the fish, although I promise to give them a swift and honorable death.

Good luck on your camping trip! I'm sure it will be an amazing experience for the kids. They are lucky to have an aunt like you to do stuff like that with.

I carry a Columbia River Knife and Tool M16-10KZ 3-Inch Black Folding Knife This is a solid knife, and one of the better, and most durable pocket knives that I've owned. For instance, I was able to punch through the steel in a cheap table-top grill with it, and it didn't really hurt it.

It's definitely a cultural thing, much like living with guns. If you grew up carrying one, then having one around (or on you) is just sort of natural. I also grew up in the south, and I've started to realize recently that Im a total redneck (whether I like it or not).

How much are you willing to spend on your knife? I'll list some personal suggestions:
-Zero Tolerance 0350- https://www.amazon.com/dp/B002QFJLEI/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_KtvazbAND0VBR
$140
-Kershaw Knives 1556BLK Cryo II Framelock Black- https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00VGLC5ZU/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_vwvazbC8VD0H0
$30
-Spyderco Tenacious Folding Knife, G-10 Black Handle, Plain Edge, Black Blade - https://www.amazon.com/dp/B007CK1MNU/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_txvazb93JM0N7
$40
-Benchmade Contego 810,- https://www.amazon.com/dp/B007VIDCBS/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_ozvazbC0ACM6D
$195

Hope this helps

OP have you looked into Zero Tolerance knives at all? One of their smaller blades may fit your needs. I have the 0200. It's 154CM, but may be too big for you (it's super chunky). the 350 has thinner G10 scales and a shorter blade, but its S30V. Not sure if thats a dealbreaker or not. Excellent knife tho.

Spyderco Manix 2 would fit your size/G10 requirements, but, again...S30V (sorry).

What else....Ontario Rat 2 is a fun little blade for 27 bucks.

Benchmade Mini-Onslaught

Spyderco Caly 3

Fallkniven U2 is something a little different from that company.

Or you could just nut up and get a Sebenza :P

If you're rough enough on your tools that you break the serrations off a Kershaw knife in a year and a half I would recommend avoiding a multi-tool. What will you do after you bend the knife on your multi-tool? You have to replace everything just to replace the knife. Plus, multi-tools are most likely going to be made of lower quality steel than the Kershaw you just destroyed, so it likely won't last very long. This will also be heavily dependent on your use case, which I'm obviously ignorant of. In my Jeep I keep a Leatherman with a bit set, and carry a quality knife as my EDC. I have no idea which model it is, but it's got needle nose pliers and a bit driver. A bunch of them are pretty much the same with regard to my use case.

That said, if I were in your position I'd try to take one of the two following approaches:

  1. Spend so little on a knife that you don't mind chucking it and replacing it with a new one regularly. You can get a crappy $10 knife that will hold an ok edge and then not feel bad when you throw it away after a few months abuse.
  2. Get a higher quality (and much more expensive) knife made of a tougher steel that will take the beating you're going to give it and beg for more.

All that being said, I enjoy carrying my ZT. I've beat the crap out of it over the last 3.5 years and it has never let me down. That knife is very expensive though and you should be able to find good quality knives made of the same S30V or tougher steel for a lower price if that scares you off. Here's a nice chart of various knife materials and their properties regarding hardness, edge retention, ease of sharpening, etc.
u/NFresh6 · 1 pointr/knifeclub

Thanks for sharing your opinion. I really like that Spyderco, but I have been leaning towards a ZT350 (or a Bechmade Adamas) and was wondering about the tiger stripe blade, so thanks for letting me know. I was worried I would get it thinking it would be unique and maybe look cool and end up hating it and thinking it was over the top and gaudy. This should help me narrow it down some. If you got a 350, would you get a black finished blade, or silver?

love it, and I have taken it in to the wilds with very good results so far, I feel like it's my "folder for life" at this point. It doesn't hold an edge horribly long, but is very easy to sharpen, both at home and in the field.....I can't see dropping that much on my folder when in all reality my fixed blade collection (similar to yours OP) is going to do the bulk of the work in the field.

I've got a few knives, but the interesting ones are an Opinel No 8 and a Mora No 2. They're not traditional, but they work fine as paring knives and are easy to keep very sharp.

u/MistahBradley · 1 pointr/Bowyer

This is what I've got So far it's done pretty good. Then went to Home Depot and bought a hatchet which really helps for slimming down the wood. But until I've got my own house (in an apartment right now) this is the best I can do :/

u/TheMindToker · 1 pointr/wildwhittlers

They can make a big difference but mostly I would say just use what works for you. Personally I use a Mora Classic #2 for almost all my carving, its cheap, and its easy to get it wicked sharp. Occasionally I'll use a smaller blade such as an opinel or a Flexcut. Wood selection is also a big factor, I would recommend grabbing some Basswood if you're just starting out.

u/Hauvegdieschisse · 1 pointr/AskMen

I'm a blacksmith. Because you're getting ready to go into college you probably can't afford one of mine, but I'll highly recommend this one as the best knife you can get for under $100.

I got this model, but with finger guards, as a first knife for my kids. Sharp as anything out of the box, scandi grind that is very easy to sharpen. But you need to be a bit careful with the carbon steel to avood rust.

The cheapest one you can find on Amazon. Actually, just buy two.

Throw one in your trunk and forget about it until you need a knife one day.
Throw the other in your toolbox and use it for random jobs.

After a few months of using it you'll realize it's a great little thing and get another to take camping.

Edit:
I like this one because it's ~$8.50 and your fingers won't slip onto the blade under any circumstances. It's a little on the small side if you have big hands though.

For camping I like this one.

u/AceofSpad3s · 1 pointr/knives

I got [this] (http://www.amazon.com/Mora-Made-in-Sweden-511/dp/B004GAVOUU/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1372837994&sr=8-2&keywords=mora) one, I have not eally used it but the quality is great and was abe to shave hair out of box. Most higher end mora's are $15 ish. The Scandy grind makes it impossibly easy to sharpen.

u/Noonsky · 1 pointr/CampingandHiking

Mora knives are the exception to rule #3. I'm a particularly big fan of this little guy.

u/fearandloling · 1 pointr/EDC

all the moras are nice. get a carbon steel mora classic if you just want a base model, or if you don't like the wood handle/traditional look you can grab the mora frost which is cheaper and has a nice and grippy rubber handle. if you wanna spend a bit more cash, they have a line of thicker blades, designed for specific bushcraft use (whatever that means) such as the mora bushcraft black. basically they don't make a bad knife. even if you get the cheapest mora utility you will not be disappointed.

your sog is legit though, i really like it. i've been meaning to add a combo straight/serrated fixed blade to my collection and the seal pup elite really caught my eye. good looking blade for sure.

u/ElBomberoLoco · 1 pointr/Bushcraft

>but at the same time I am not going to buy a 10$ knife and toss it next month

Buy a $9 knife...and keep it for a lifetime.

u/pm079 · 1 pointr/knives

u/DarthValiant · 1 pointr/camping

I've got this one for food prep. http://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B004GAVOUU

It came shaving sharp and has stayed that way. This plus a dollar store frisbee, chopsticks, a spoon, a silicone baking dish and a cheap tea kettle are pretty much my field mess kit. I like the full size kettle because it is just fun to tie to the outside of my pack.

u/jason22internet · 1 pointr/camping

Five day hike? I think you'll want to find two bags; a lightweight one that you'll be happy with carrying; and a heavy comfy one (like the Field & Stream). Car camping is great! It's tons of fun and easy experience.

When it comes to my opinion and knives; I say you don't need much for camping. I personally use a leatherman micra. I'd recommend something small; even a box cutter. Avoid cheap knock offs (like cheap leatherman look-a-likes, swiss army look-a-likes) because they are impossible to sharpen and dangerous (the folding blades will fold closed right on your hand). If you have no other knife and no particular knife-need, aside from a general camping/hiking knife, then consider this one... http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B004GAVOUU/ref=wms_ohs_product?ie=UTF8&psc=1 .

Now if you needed a knife for batoning wood, carving spoons, gutting deer, or some other particular purpose - my recommendation would change.

Renting a pack? I highly recommend it. It'll give you a chance to see what you like and don't like before you make the big purchase. A $10 pack rental is well worth it, considering packs sell for $100-300+. Also, temporarily trade out packs with your buddy when possible, even if it's only for half of an hour.

The CRKT Swindle is a very slim flipper with a unique pocket clip. I really like it when I'm wearing a suit. It's also very affordable, which is fine with me since if I'm wearing a suit my knife is pretty much a letter opener that day.

2: CRKT Drifter Folding Knife

Yes, but as I've already said once, they're not disclosing their methods and the people doing the inspections had detailed insider knowledge and in some cases were targeting specific employees. The data is near useless without context. They were using "mock" weapons and firearms, and we don't know if that means they were plastic and shaped like a gun, or if they were metal. We don't even know how many of the "weapons" that got through would actually be considered weapons by most people. A screwdriver over 7 inches is prohibited, but is a 7.5" screwdriver more dangerous than a 6.5" screwdriver and how many of the things that got through were just minor variations of permitted items?

As I said already, I've been caught 100% of the time, and many times with stuff that's barely prohibited (like a screwdriver that's 8" long). The pocket knife I carry is tiny, (about the length of a man's thumb) and my laptop bag is full of all sorts of shit, and they've picked it out at least four times.

You can call it anecdotal all you want, but I have absolutely no concerns that someone is coming through a TSA checkpoint with a firearm.
