I have the nest cam and it works great.

But - if money is really tight, a fake camera will work as a deterrent. This one is only $8 - and looks pretty legit. Put it in a really obvious place, maybe even a sign that says "you are on camera".

If the kid isn't completely stupid, he'll bail once he sees it.

u/NadyaNayme · 38 pointsr/worldnews

Instructions way too complicated, but I appreciate the effort you went through.

Just buy a dummy pack and don't even bother installing batteries, waste of money. In fact, remove or cover the red LED because most real cameras don't have a red LED when in operation because you don't want the position of your cameras at night to be given away by a bright ass red LED - they use infrared LED.

u/bunnylover726 · 26 pointsr/forwardsfromgrandma

I had just the image sent to me but was somewhat dismayed to find out that it's real. The reviewers on Amazon UK seemed to like it more than the American users.

u/schadwick · 15 pointsr/Porsche

No kidding!

But there are some ways to mitigate this risk:

  1. Park in a remote empty area, and put orange cones in the adjacent parking bays.
  2. After parking, place fake security cameras on top of your car.
  3. Bring a spousal unit or significant other to keep watch while you shop.

    I usually go with option 3 ;-)
u/[deleted] · 13 pointsr/WTF

Might be to hide the fact that there isn't even a camera in there, too.

u/su5 · 12 pointsr/AdviceAnimals

Fake security signs dont hurt, but they arent terribly helpful either.

These wouldnt hurt either

u/tisnotwhatitseems · 11 pointsr/offmychest

There are many affordable fake ones on Amazon.

I have some camera ideas for you! Outdoor ones tend to be expensive, plus many require wiring (or can be even more expensive for wireless). To get around this, you could look at indoor ones and point them out windows. There are tons of options on Amazon in the $30 range, and you don't have to worry about external wiring (or even check local ads for used nanny cams). For a reasonable outdoor setup, they have great trail cams like this that are very reasonable for what they provide. No wiring, and records to an SD card so you don't have to worry about wifi. You could even throw up one real camera and get a pack of fake ones like theses. To hopefully prevent her from even thinking about coming back, grab an image from the real camera, forward it to the ex to show you're prepared. This would also be a great time to go to your neighbors to explain the situation and see if they have cameras or saw anything, and ask them to let you know if they notice anything in the future.

Good luck and stay safe!!

u/GryffinPuff23 · 6 pointsr/trees

Wherever you live next, get one of these. My friend also has an ADT sign even though they do not actually have it.

u/infectedmethod · 6 pointsr/battlestations

Its okay I have 2 security cameras at my gate. I live on 2 acres. The entire 2 acres are enclosed, and guarded by this. I also own 2 Pitbulls. They are EXTREMELY VICIOUS.

u/lo8 · 5 pointsr/india
u/JDChesser56 · 5 pointsr/RBI

A couple of these around the house might scare them away

u/schmoogina · 5 pointsr/Shoplifting

Not actually a bad idea, just don't go for the common ones like this, get something like this or this

u/Smaskifa · 4 pointsr/homedefense

I wouldn't worry much about the fence. Even if it's a super sturdy, brand new fence with awesome lock, they'll just climb it.

Securing your doors and windows seems like the best approach. Window security film may slow them down if they're attempting to break the glass, though it sounds like so far they've avoided breaking glass to get in.

You can also buy fake security cameras to give the illusion of security. Here's a 4 pack of them for $20. Signs indicating surveillance could help, too. There are some people who speculate that cameras and warnings of surveillance are actually an attractant to burglars, as they think you must have something worth stealing. I don't buy that, though.

There are also window/door alarms you can install that let out a super loud siren: https://www.homedepot.com/p/Sabre-Wireless-Door-Window-Alarm-HS-DWA/205202554. That may be enough to make a burglar flee.

Sorry to hear about your security issues. That must be a terrible feeling to not feel safe in your own home.

u/bookchaser · 3 pointsr/Teachers

The stick-anywhere motion detector isn't really stick-anywhere; it's for indoor use. I'd make a serious commitment and have a company install the surveillance equipment. In lieu of that, Costco sells DIY camera systems that include a recording function.

Without the data being recorded, the cameras are merely an early warning system. If the kid causes damage, there needs to be HD footage. Or maybe all OP needs is the motion lights and fake cameras to scare him off.

u/waspwaspgumbo42 · 3 pointsr/Bonsai

Fake security cameras can be a good deterrent. Cheap too.

u/cheetofoot · 3 pointsr/AmazonTopRated

Bingo. I have a bunch of hardscape that includes areas that are filled with small stones. It'll take someone hours to find my fake rock -- and they'll have to search for it in view of my fake camera

u/redikulous · 3 pointsr/instant_regret

Hell you could probably get a fake one and it would have the same effect.

u/cr0sh · 3 pointsr/Whatcouldgowrong

Another good and cheap way for a camera is a Raspberry Pi Zero W with a small camera and this installed on it:

https://github.com/ccrisan/motioneyeos

You can set it up to email you photos, videos, upload to the cloud, ftp, etc - total cost for a complete camera with be around $50.00. It's the cheapest full wifi IP camera you can do - parts I've used:

https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B071L2ZQZX/

https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B01LH10HYE/

You can fit the whole thing inside the case provided by the Canakit - just use the one -without- the camera hole (it doesn't fit that camera) - and drill your own hole. Hot glue the camera in place. You'll have to come up with your own solution for a mount (I ended up drilling a hole in the back case, putting a 1/4-20 thin-pan-head screw in and a standard camera mount).

Or get a a bigger case for the whole unit - a cheap decoy camera can make a great custom case:

https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00MC05K9W/

https://www.amazon.com/Security-Surveillance-Realistic-Recording-Warning/dp/B01HDZM66K/

Those are actual cases that are used by "cheap" security camera makers, just with false parts and a blinking LED added. So they are easy to repurpose for custom security cameras made with RasPi components. Also, the larger cases allow you to stick something bigger than a Pi Zero inside - a full Raspberry Pi 3 or 4 could be fitted in there, plus a larger (more pixels) camera module if you wanted it (plus anything else you could think of - IR illumination, temperature and humidity sensors, etc).

The only thing cheaper than a RasPi security camera system like this would be the ESP32 camera modules:

https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07QS7VFMJ/

But they aren't as easy to set up and use; software is still a very-much hands-on experience (if you know Python, though - they can fun little units). You'll have to come up with your own enclosure, too. But if experimentation is up your alley, they are the absolute cheapest option for an wifi IP camera.

You're welcome. As someone else said, an actual camera system is expensive and irresponsible. If it's just the deterrence you want, these are cheap and better than nothing.

u/SeelWool · 2 pointsr/montreal

Install a fake surveillance camera and a sign indicating a "Caméra Arrêt" is nearby. Bonus points if you can make the sign look official like this one.

u/medicjanet · 2 pointsr/Random_Acts_Of_Amazon

Omg that’s awful, I’m so sorry. Do what I did, put these bad boys up fake cameras I used to have stuff stolen and now I have no problems at all lol.
And I agree a weather radio is super important, I’m in FL and can’t live without one.

Title: Crappy neighbor thinks my fake cameras are an invasion of privacy...

Original Post:

> I have a crappy neighbor, who used to have a noisy goat (illegal where we live) and two noisy little dogs. I bought two fake security camera's off Amazon and put them up between our houses. Good news is she got rid of the illegal goat, and the noisy dogs have been kept inside every since I put the cameras up. Bad news is she had her lawyer draw up a cease and desist letter claiming that the cameras violate her privacy. She thinks the cameras are recording her every move, but in reality, the are recording nothing - they are fake. If the fake cameras are not recording anything (but she thinks they are) am I in any possible legal trouble?

Like other aimed at front and at Vehicle, If you have other issues around the sides/back throw up some Dummy cams Amazon has some great ones Four Cameras for $30 or less

u/beansjawns · 1 pointr/philadelphia

You could mount one of these.

u/onejdc · 1 pointr/k12sysadmin

So, one word of advice is to define what your goals are.

  • Do you only care about catching vandals?
  • Do you want entrance/exit visibility in case of an active shooter situation?
  • Are you also looking to handle discipline cases?
  • Who needs access to footage? Central/Admin Office? Principals? School Resource Officers?
  • Do you require/want authentication?
  • Do you want a closed circuit system, ethernet/poe system (IP), something in between?

Answering these questions will help guide your decision process. Having said, I like some of the following offerings Sony's OnSSI, Cisco's Video Surveillance Manager, and Trendnet

These are larger offerings, and I would also recommend using a consultant to make any of these happen.

If you're in need of something much smaller, quick-n-dirty, the Arlo indoor/outdoor system isn't bad (can get from Best Buy) and I've heard ravings about the Canary video system as well from some smaller schools.

In the meantime, not the WORST idea in the world to look into a fake camera or 2 to at least try and deter the less malevolent.
u/TheKobayashiMoron · 1 pointr/HomeKit

I assume you’re talking about something like this? It will not work by just plugging in a power source. You have to modify the battery contact points to trick it into thinking it’s a wired camera.

Once you do that, the constant HomeKit stream draws significant power from the camera. I don’t know if the solar panel would be able to provide enough power to keep the battery charged.

u/Supervisor194 · 1 pointr/WTF

Wouldn't it be funny if.

u/randomactsofcrazy · 1 pointr/relationships

Place security cameras all over, outside the house. If thats too expensive, get fake ones. Also, every time you leave through the garage, make sure you keep your eye on the garage door until it is completely closed.

Just speaking from experience.

u/petruzzo · 1 pointr/AskReddit

Put up a sign saying the premises are under surveillance, and spend a few bucks on one of these.

http://www.amazon.com/Outdoor-Dummy-Security-Camera-Blinking/dp/B0013Q1XTM

u/mike413 · 1 pointr/LifeProTips

But for $170 you can get 56.71 of these and really freak 'em out.

u/Murfgon · 1 pointr/homesecurity

Budget ? I am guessing not a lot student life isn’t easy so going on that assumption, Fake cameras are cheap from amazon https://www.amazon.com/WALI-Surveillance-Security-Outdoor-Warning/dp/B01940JPLQ/ref=mp_s_a_1_3?keywords=fake+cctv&qid=1574605092&sr=8-3 good deterrent . Also motion sensor lights https://www.amazon.com/Home-Zone-ES00730U-Security-Weatherproof/dp/B07K7WX721/ref=mp_s_a_1_6?keywords=motion+sensor+light+outdoor&qid=1574605276&sprefix=motion+sens&sr=8-6 are a good idea more light is the enemy of people doing shady shit, you will need a electrician or if you are comfortable doing it yourself https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=Vk3jpZW-t3o
He just says turn off the light switch I would go just one step further and turn off the breaker at your electrical box don’t get fried defeats the entire purpose. If you want some cameras to see if someone is sneaking around Wyze cams are great or get a trail camera battery powered but hide it well as it can be stolen.

u/MediocreFisherman · 1 pointr/homedefense

Buy some dummy security cameras like theses

https://www.amazon.com/WALI-Surveillance-Security-Outdoor-Warning/dp/B01940JPLQ/

Most have like a flashing red LED in them so they are really obvious.

Mount them in a VERY obvious place, like right over the door.

99.9% of thieves will go somewhere else. The .01% that won't are the ones you aren't going to keep out anyways.

u/MidwestJackalope · 1 pointr/homedefense

Not disagreeing with your comment, but Amazon does have fake security cameras for $8.
