I’ve worked midnights for a decade. Charles Dickens is my last resort. When I put that on, I have Great Expectations that I’ll be asleep soon. It was free on audible a little while ago but you can get potato quality recordings on livrvox for free.

Here’s my sleep aide list I give to new employees on the shift.
Not that you asked.

Melatonin. Try different brands. I like strawberry chewy one. I found one brand that just doesn’t work for me and another brand that lead to chronic nightmares. Switch it up if the first kind doesn’t do it for you.

Get a sleep mask (https://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B003CGJRNK/ref=yo_ii_img?ie=UTF8&psc=1) I like this one. The large eye cavity and lip at the bottom are essential. The lip keeps out the light. The large space in the eye balls keeps the headaches away.

Get soft ear plugs (LaserLite, they’re pink and yellow). Don’t use the hard foam cheap bullshit. Fuck that noise. They don’t even stay in your ears. The pink and yellow are like, the soft caress of a spring breeze in a field with gentle rolling hills as you notice a fawn nibbling on grass at the edge of a mysterious wood.

Download the ambiance app. There’s a couple thousand sounds and you can customize your loop so you can do like, thunderstorm and waves crash plus a heart beat if that’s your sleepy time jam.

Experiment with sounds. For a 4 month period 3 years ago, i discovered a loop of a group of Spanish people conversing in a room that put me out. Some of the sounds on the app are fucking wild. Fire fight in Iraq? Check. Old man weeping? Check. Prison fight? Check. Ford assembly plant? Check. They have normal sounds too but I’m saying you’d be surprised what will help you sleep. If your an insomniac you’re at the edge of your rope anyway so just try something that may seem counterintuitive.

Take a bath. Really step up your bath game with lavender bath salts and candles. Am I a middle age lady treating myself or a manic depressive shift worker trying to catch some z’s? Why not both?

Google sleep aide tea. I like the chamomile but you do you.

Get a heating pad and place it on your stomach or neck. I don’t know, it’s soothing.

In terms of diet, I don’t drink caffeine or sugary soda 3-5 hours before bed. Alcohol tends to interrupt my sleep so it’ll initially put me out but I’ll wake up earlier and won’t feel as rested. So I don’t really drink much during the week anymore. So consider what you’re putting in your body that could be effecting your sleep.

The guy who narrates forensic files makes me super sleepy but my brother thinks that’s creepy. I don’t know why a murder show makes me tired. I don’t ask questions, I just appreciate the sleep.

Anyway, hope that helps.

You need to find somewhere else to live. Until such time that can be arranged I suggest investing in a sleep mask.

I have lived in similar situations before and from my experience people like this DON'T GIVE A FUCK ABOUT YOU. They are not bad people per se, they just have no empathy. Good luck.

First, find yourself a Safe Parking location and get in there if you can.

For Los Angeles: https://www.safeparkingla.org/

Long Beach's pilot Safe Parking program starts in September.

If you're not in a Safe Parking location, you'll want to block out your windows at night. Whether or not you're in a Safe Parking location, you also might want to get a good sleep mask and some earplugs.

If you're in neighborhoods, vary your parking spot as much as you can (choose different streets or different neighborhoods for the night if possible), and be a good neighbor -- no noise, no trash, no sitting in your vehicle with the music on even if the windows are up, no pacing up and down in front of houses talking on your phone at night, no peeing on trees or pooping in bushes, no sneaking up to houses to turn on their hose to get water, no chain-smoking outside someone's home, no drugs. All these things make it more likely that someone will ask the cops to ask you to move on.

A YMCA membership for showering and a bathroom is a great idea, especially if you need to get out of the heat and just sit somewhere air conditioned and read or charge your electronics. Some have wifi and TVs too. However, joining something like 24-hour Fitness means you have 24/7 access to showers and restrooms, although they might be less chill about people hanging out charging your electronics or reading or something.

Eggshell foam is going to get unbearably hot to sleep on and isn't going to provide you much support -- you're going to be aching in the morning after a night or two. If you have any spare cash, you can get an okay mattress at IKEA for $60.

Public libraries are also good for getting into air conditioning and charging your devices, plus you get to read whatever you want and stuff.

Yeah, the Dohm (which I see/hear used a lot - we have 2) is actually pink noise and not white noise. But most people don’t know about the colors so they call it white noise.

5-HTP is sold over the counter as an antidepressant, appetite suppressant, and sleep aid.

L-tryptophan is a natural amino acid and is a compound used in the creation of serotonin and can also be bought over the counter in supplement form (used as an antidepressant and sleep aid) but it also occurs naturally in many foods.

As Anonymous_69 stated, Vitamin B (particularly B6) works well too as it helps convert the tryptophan into serotonin. Vitamin B also helps in the generation of dopamine.

Agree with the others: getting them used to low level noises is the way to go. In the meantime, I also recommend some soothing white noise. I've used one of these for two girls, they're great. Works plugged in the bedroom and runs of AA batteries.

I've started sleeping with tape over my mouth using this tape. I think it has increased my wakefulness and reduced how much I need to sleep.

My psychiatrist has me taking this supplement for anxiety which has a lot of different things in it to help: https://www.amazon.com/Labs-Supplement-Enhancer-Ashwagandha-Rhodiola/dp/B00A4OVLRS/ref=mp_s_a_1_15?keywords=anxiety+supplements&qid=1564538975&s=gateway&sprefix=anxiety+&sr=8-15

I know it's called Mood Boost, but the contents are actually good for both depression and anxiety so you're covered.

Another possibility is lavender. There are two different types of clinically tested lavender supplements. They are

Calm Aid (also suggested by a psychiatrist):
https://www.amazon.com/Natures-Way-non-drowsy-clinically-gluten-free/dp/B007TYY2JA/ref=mp_s_a_1_3?keywords=lavender+supplement&qid=1564539190&s=gateway&sprefix=lavender+su&sr=8-3

Lavela:

I also agree with another poster about meditation. There's a wonderful app for that which is simply called "Calm".

There's also a good app and website for counseling where you simply pay for unlimited messaging with a counselor. I have found it quite effective. It's called "talkspace".

Good luck!

Couple tips if you're having insomnia. Listen up cuz this is the real deal, this WILL help get you through these first few days (take it from someone who just got through it and is feeling great now).

  1. Start taking magnesium. Like, as soon as humanly possible. Get this brand here, there are a million types of magnesium, and the most common ones won't do jack for you. I've done tons of brand research and this is the good stuff.

Take two pills as soon as you wake up, and more importantly, take two 30-60 minutes before bed. When you take it at night it will make you sleepy. You can take it on an empty stomach, it's super easy on the stomach.

Magnesium is the 2nd most common deficiency in the developed world, AND alcohol flushes magnesium out of your body. So chances are that your body is WAY low on it, and that will mess up your sleep AND it will make you depressed. Getting your magnesium levels back up is proven to lower symptoms of depression and improve your mood, something I've experienced first hand, so it should make your moods a little sunnier.

  2. If the above doesn't work for getting you to sleep, and you want to bring in the big guns, take some melatonin at night about 30 minutes before you want to go to bed. I like this brand but there are lots online to choose from.

BIG POINT FOR MELATONIN: Most melatonin pills are 5mg. I don't know why this is, because that's actually a massive dose. Break off about a quarter of a pill and that should be a good dose (.75-1.5mg). Also, if you go the melatonin route, try to limit your usage to 1-2 weeks of daily usage. If you take it too often, then when you stop you might have trouble getting to sleep again, cuz your body got used to it. So just take it for a 5-14 days while your body heals itself and naturally learns how to fall asleep without alcohol.

In general, you may have to take it on faith that it gets better for now while you're hurting, but it's the OVERWHELMING experience of everyone that it does get better. Nobody, ever, in the history of the world, was having a shitty life, and then they started drinking more, and then things got better.

But if you go to an AA meeting (which I highly recommend doing), you will meet people with 1, 5, 10, 20 years of sobriety, and every single one will tell you that their lives got insanely better when they stopped drinking. You'll hear a lot of people saying stuff like "back when I was drinking, I couldn't possibly imagine my life being as good as it is today". And I've had people close to me quit, and I've seen them go through a similar situation.

Hang in there friend. What you're doing right now is worth every bit of effort.
u/hawtfabio · 5 pointsr/StackAdvice

Suntheanine is just marketing.

l-theanine is l-theanine. I like 200mg on an empty stomach in the morning. With or without coffee. Higher amounts are quite forgiving and tolerance is negligible. Find what works for you.

I can confidently tell you that it is not worth the extra money. You're just paying for marketing. This is the best deal I've found:

This sucks, a few notes that may be useful to you and other users:

  1. You can sometimes work out how many rooms a host has by clicking on their host profile and seeing all the properties they list. Then you can usually figure it out from maps and pictures. You can sometimes also figure out if those rooms will be occupied or not.

  2. I recently bought a wrap around sleep mask with, get this, a speaker in it that connects to my iPhone via blue tooth. Then I can use it to play whitenoise. Cost me $10 (ordered online from a local ecom platform). Here's an example of a similar one: https://www.amazon.com/Bluetooth-Eye-Headphones-Joseche-Microphone/dp/B07F59HQRC. Then you can play whitenoise and hopefully that can help. Not ideal, but better than nothing.

  3. Check with hosts by sending a private message ahead of time.

In terms of fixing this current situation the best you can do is to talk to the host and the other guests. There's nothing foolproof though. If you can afford it then it may be worth cutting your losses and staying elsewhere (sunk cost fallacy) but I understand that for a lot of folks that's just financially not possible.

these look like just a thin sheet of foam cut to the template. Materials wise probably cost no more than $0.50. Just go to your local arts and crafts store and by a foam sheet and cut it yourself. Or better yet, buy a memory foam sleeping mask from amazon.com for $8 each, cheaper than these and more comfortable.

alright here goes my exhaustive list of stuff that goes into my preworkout! i love to research the stuff that works, and then experiment to see how effectively they work for me, especially on keto.

  1. 1 scoop of pre jym from bodybuilding.com - just because i don't want to add all those ingredients (good compared to most) on my own and it tastes pretty good (raspberry lemonade). it does, however, have 4g carbs per scoop - https://www.bodybuilding.com/store/jym/pre-jym.html

  2. 1/2 scoop of optimum nutrition hydrowhey protein powder (about 15g protein) - fast digesting preworkout protein seems more logical than just bcaas. keeps me satiated during my workout and seems to boost recovery times because i have the full gamut of proper amino acids in my bloodstream as exercise-induced insulin rises. turbo chocolate and chocolate peanut butter are my favorites. vanilla surprisingly sucks and gets very foamy - https://www.bodybuilding.com/store/opt/platinum_hydrowhey.html

  3. 1 tsp curcumin powder from bulk supplements - expensive but 1kg lasts a long time - go to examine.com to see the dozens of benefits it has across the board. i use this to help alleviate my disc issues, but it feels great for workouts because it reduces inflammation everywhere, especially joints. you can get pills instead, but they're not as cost effective and i like to blend it into my shakes. MAKE SURE YOU PAIR IT WITH BIOPERINE (already in pre jym but super cheap anyway) OR GET THE BIO AVAILABLE TYPES. otherwise, only your gut will get the benefits -
    https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00GHY364A/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o00_s00?ie=UTF8&th=1

  4. 1 digestive enzyme pill - research has shown that such enzymes not only help with what you'd expect, digestion, but also boost muscle synthesis, immune system, reduce soreness, etc. - https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00RH5K26I/ref=od_aui_detailpages00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

  5. 1 tbsp extra citrulline malate - because 1 scoop of pre-jym doesn't have the clinical dose of around 8g. research has shown that it reduces soreness and speeds up muscle repair. i believe it helps performance as well - https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00EYDJU50/ref=oh_aui_search_detailpage?ie=UTF8&th=1

  6. EDIT: 1/2 tsp (not 2 tsp) extra beta alanine - because 1 scoop of pre-jym doesn't have enough. this stuff kinda acts like creatine, boosting the number of reps you can do. especially helpful on my high rep/speed days. great for crossfit types of workouts if you're into those. i like the tingly feeling as well - https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00EIO4I8E/ref=oh_aui_search_detailpage?ie=UTF8&th=1

  7. 1/2 tsp potassium citrate - i take electrolytes before and during my workouts -
    https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00ENSA93S/ref=oh_aui_search_detailpage?ie=UTF8&th=1

  8. 1/16 tsp magnesium glycinate - one of the most bioavailable forms of mg and doesn't mess up your digestion -
    https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00F7OZJR8/ref=oh_aui_search_detailpage?ie=UTF8&th=1

  9. 1/2 tsp calcium citrate - Ca and Mg go well together in the body. also, multivitamins rarely hit the RDA for calcium -
    https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00F8I5XPG/ref=oh_aui_search_detailpage?ie=UTF8&th=1

  10. 1/2 tsp pink salt - sodium! need lots of it because i sweat a lot - https://www.samsclub.com/sams/himalayan-pink-salt-5-lb-fine-grain/prod20131268.ip

  11. 1/4 tsp vitamin c - i take a lot of vit C to help with disc healing. collagen synthesis requires vit C. of course, great anti-oxidant, great for skin, etc. -
    https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00AYIM9Y8/ref=oh_aui_search_detailpage?ie=UTF8&psc=1

  12. 1/2 tsp ALCAR - i supplement this mostly for the nootropic effect (boosts the brain and concentration), but it supposedly helps with fat breakdown and energy a little bit. i feel razor sharp concentrated during my workouts with this. also, it's just plain old good for the brain. -
    https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00E7H96DY/ref=oh_aui_search_detailpage?ie=UTF8&th=1

  13. 200 mg L-theanine - smooths out the jittery feeling from caffeine to provide more stable energy. also good before bed to get higher quality of sleep. -
    https://www.amazon.com/BulkSupplements-Pure-L-Theanine-Powder-grams/dp/B00E7GESLA/ref=sr_1_1_a_it?ie=UTF8&qid=1492089341&sr=8-1&keywords=bulk%2Bl-theanine&th=1

  14. 100mg pill RALA - good for the nervous system and energy - https://www.amazon.com/Doctors-Best-Stabilized-R-Lipoic-BioEnhanced/dp/B000I4C19G/ref=sr_1_1_a_it?ie=UTF8&qid=1492089382&sr=8-1&keywords=doctor%27s+best+rala

  15. 200mg coq10 - good for the heart, boosts energy a bit - https://www.amazon.com/Doctors-Best-Absorption-Bioperine-Supplement/dp/B00HRGN36S/ref=sr_1_2_a_it?ie=UTF8&qid=1492089466&sr=8-2&keywords=doctor%27s%2Bbest%2Bcoenzyme%2Bq10&th=1

  16. 320mg saw palmetto extract pill - good for men's prostate health, keeps good testosterone high (instead of DHT), and for me, prevents the hairloss that creatine (i think) has induced. not just bs bro science, go to examine.com for research. i personally have regrown a lot of hair by taking 2-3 three of these a day for the last three months! - https://www.amazon.com/Doctors-Best-Palmetto-Softgels-Count/dp/B006RQ6TAG/ref=sr_1_1_a_it?ie=UTF8&qid=1492092375&sr=8-1&keywords=doctor%27s+best+saw+palmetto

  17. 1 tbsp psyllium husk powder - keeps my digestion on track, prevents the indigestion i tend to get from MCT oil - https://www.amazon.com/Bulksupplements-Pure-Psyllium-Powder-grams/dp/B0100QRXOO/ref=sr_1_2?s=hpc&ie=UTF8&qid=1492092483&sr=1-2-spons&keywords=psyllium%2Bhusk%2Bpowder&th=1

  18. 10g MCT oil - i either use brain octane or miCkey T Eight because they are pure C-8 caprylic acid instead of blends of the crappier acids. definitely boosts energy during long workouts. careful, it tends to mess with your stomach if you don't ease into it. if you're good with coconut oil, you're probably good with this. - https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00RUCHISS/ref=oh_aui_search_detailpage?ie=UTF8&psc=1

  19. 100mg hyaluronic acid - helps with joints and skin. i have noticed my knee and elbow pain going away while taking this. skin complexion also improved. - https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00663G8WO/ref=oh_aui_search_detailpage?ie=UTF8&psc=1

    currently experimenting with:

  20. clear muscle - i usually supplement HMB, but this is the newer liquid variant. its pricey, and i haven't noticed anything bad about it, but it's hard to say if it's working better than the much cheaper powdered HMB. studies are probably very biased, so i can't really trust them - https://www.amazon.com/MuscleTech-Advanced-Strength-Building-Capsules/dp/B00JQ3WXS4/ref=sr_1_1_a_it?ie=UTF8&qid=1492094034&sr=8-1&keywords=clear+muscle

  21. phospha muscle - phosphatidic acid has shown some promise in studies, but again, probably biased research. also cannot tell yet, but i have seen some decent strength gains pairing this with clear muscle. we'll see! - https://www.amazon.com/MuscleTech-Phospha-Clinically-Phosphatidic-SoftGels/dp/B00UVAG1PM/ref=sr_1_1_a_it?ie=UTF8&qid=1492094155&sr=8-1&keywords=phospha+muscle

Alternatives:

  • Read e-books on a backlit tablet
  • Audio books (Audible is great)
  • Eyemask (this one is quite comfortable).
  • Fall asleep without reading
u/bones_and_love · 3 pointsr/cocaine

Just buy something online that has white powder pills in it like melatonin. Open the caps, empty them, stuff it full of coke, and recap it. If you want to be very paranoid, mark coco pills with a little dot using a marker and bury them at the bottom of the bottle with real melatonin pills. Domestic flights in the US have very lax checks and they're only looking for things like weapons, bombs, or obvious illegal stuff that shows itself.

Melatonin is also a very common supplement to travel with since it helps sleep before bet time, a really useful tool to have during long flights or changes in time zones.

Expert mode: Take some caps with you to the restroom, open them up, and do coke on the plane. I'm kidding... don't do that.

If you were extra paranoid, you could buy that product then buy smaller caps and basically put the smaller caps inside the melatonin caps surrounded by melatonin product. That's overkill though.

A few of my suggestions have been said but I will go through my routine-
During work, I take a Vitamin B Complex about halfway through my shift (I decided that’s the time it worked best for me- doing 12’s wears on my mental capacity).
Sunglasses on the way home, make no stops on your way home unless you NEED something.
Get home, strip, take a melatonin, shower, my routine is to fill the bath tub with an inch or two of hot water and and a few drops of lavender oil, sometimes epsom salt (depending on the night of course), immediately brush my teeth and lay down ASAP. I used to have blackout curtains but it was almost too much- we have a dark tan sheet doubled over the window. It lets in some light so on the days it bothers me, I use an eye mask .
I enjoy white noise, I have an app for it on my phone, but I also keep earplugs nearby.

If you didn’t notice, I really like essential oils so I also have a diffuser going with something calming.

Jut try to shut your eyes ASAP. Don’t underestimate melatonin, it is your friend. Benadryl makes me feel groggy the next day.

So sorry for the novel, but I have my routine down to a science. 😂

Edit: during the winter I use my heated blanket to help warm up and drift off to sleep. 💤

No, no evidence that two drinks daily will damage anything. The Benadryl in combination will not negatively affect your liver or kidney either.

Consider reviewing and following the guidelines of sleep hygiene which as you will note, recommends against alcohol. You might consider an alternative doxylamine which is the medication in Unisom, without the beers. I have heard of using one tab of Doxylamine and one of Diphenhydramine with good results.

I bought some sleep masks from amazon, and cut them into the shape of the face foam. They stick to the existing velcro on the vive

http://www.amazon.com/USpicy-Mask-Plugs-Travel-Pouch/dp/B013S9CPDE

http://www.amazon.com/Roybens-Stereo-Lightweight-Comfortable-Adjustable/dp/B0142TUPE0

why? a few reasons. thinner sleep masks allow for a slightly higher FOV due to the lenses being closer to your eyes. However I found it a bit uncomfortable on my nose so I use the slightly thicker 'memory foam' one

another reason is I now have several face 'foams' so I can swap them out / wash them as needed when sharing the vive or when its sweaty

final reason is comfort - I find the standard foam gets scratchy/uncomfortable on my face while I don't seem to have that problem with the memory foam sleep mask. different material, overly-sensitive skin, etc.

Cut that into roughly the shape of the standard wide face mask (big C shape) and it will fit the Vive perfectly and also stick to the velcro, took me 2 minutes to do. Once you have it on, move the bottom ends of the sleep mask that rest on your cheek bones lower and out of the way of the bottom of the Vive lenses, it makes a significant difference as well. Also try to have the face mask pad lining on the outside edge of the velcro strip around the face seal of the Vive, leaving plenty of room around the lenses for your face to fit in and for your eyes to get close to the lenses. It makes for a very immersive FOV, closest to DK1 I have gotten in a long time.

I've totally been there before. Whenever I've smoked daily for a long period, I take a 1-2 week break. It will really help resetting your whole system.

Whenever I take a t-break I always have trouble sleeping the first few days so I take a sleep aid. It's basically a benedryl with only the stuff that helps you fall asleep. Just take it 1-2 hours before you go to sleep and leave yourself at least 8 hours for sleep. Taking it the first few days after I stop smoking helps my body learn to fall asleep naturally again. After a week, you'll feel more well rested and alert!

PS: It doesn't have to be kirkland brand, but this is what sleep aid looks like https://www.amazon.com/Kirkland-Signature-Doxylamine-Succinate-192-Count/dp/B0045XGE9E/ref=zg_bs_3764301_8

Gorgeous room!! If you haven't gotten one already, might I recommend a sound machine? I mention it because of the doors leading to possibly lively general living spaces. We have one right inside the bedroom door and it deadens most noise so we don't have to creep around the house like shitty ninjas. We also have a second, portable one which might be overkill but whatever gets us sleep gets a 👍 from me!!

In case anyone is interested we have Marpac Dohm and Marpac Hushh which also is great for clipping to her carseat!

Consider this list:
http://www.rit.edu/fa/housing/sites/rit.edu.fa.housing/files/docs/publications/whattobring-residencehalls.pdf

Here's some nice stuff to have, but it's not needed:

  • Something to make boiling water that has an auto-shutoff, either a kettle or coffee maker.
  • Laundry detergent. It's expensive stuff, but you don't need much. Try sharing!
  • A "doorstop." I heard something about using a fork...
  • Food. Anything from home is always welcome, and if you don't have a car, much cheaper.
  • A box of 200 earplugs. Kind of optional, but I'm a light sleeper.
  • Something to block out the light at night.
  • Winter clothes, sooner than you think.
  • Headphones.
  • A fan is very important for non-ACd dorms, for those killer first two and last two weeks of the year.

Only one of these per room. Having two or more is a waste of space:

  • Fridge.
  • Television. You don't need this though. (use a computer monitor if you're a serious gamer)
  • Anything that large/expensive. Pack lighter than you think.

    Stuff I didn't need:

  • Printer. With careful planning printing is free in the NRH computer lab, and many departments have a deal for printing. If you tend to forget until the last second, a printer can be a life-saver.
  • Silverware/bowls. Take-out is king and most microwavable stuff comes in bowls. If you're going to make stuff for yourself in the microwave one bowl is helpful. However, just get some disposable forks from on-campus dining.

This is the white noise machine we use:

This company makes a larger one, but it isn't portable. I would bring this to the car when we wanted to try to have her sleep on the go. It was the gamechanger that let us shop and do other errands outside of the house with her when she was still a newborn. The phone white noise would work in the house, but not be loud enough for the car or even stroller walks.

u/Illinijuice07 · 3 pointsr/chicago

I use a white noise machine that works really well. I live right on Michigan Ave in the loop and don't have any issues with outside noise at all with the white noise machine on.

I use this one White Noise Machine but there are some good apps you can download for free and try it out. I use an app for when I'm on the road travelling but prefer the linked white noise machine better.

These are all things that not only I love but a lot of people in my bumper month group really liked as well, and that I didn't think to ask for in my registry and wish I did:

VAVA nightlight
USB charged, this touch operated nightlight was my best friend in the hospital and at home for late night feeding

Love to Dream swaddle
Amazing swaddle that's super easy to use and lets baby self soothe with their hands

Merlins magic sleepsuit
When baby outgrows swaddling (which happens fast!) this helps muffle the startle reflex to keep baby asleep.

hushh portable sound machine
Basically the only way I get any sleep

beaming buggy
Plays music, lights up and has white noise. Somehow is total magic.

Oball toys
Because there's always someone who wants to just buy toys and these are great for small hands

u/JBoozehound · 3 pointsr/Vive

From what I've heard, even if you do get them they are very uncomfortable to wear. Lot of people said theirs went straight in the trash so it might be $27 down the drain anyways. Could try to cancel via email I guess and hope they refund you.

EDIT: If you're looking for a cheaper alternative option to get your eyes closer to the lenses, a sleep mask might be a decent option. Just have to cut the eye holes out, they stick to the headset pretty well on their own. Here's a few options, I've tried all 3 and the first one listed was my favorite but note that it's pretty similar in width as the standard foam ones that come shipped with the headset, but it's a decent option if you need a replacement until official accessories are up for sale. Also the last 2 listed are almost identical:

Well first off build yourself a top of the line pc with the new i7-7700k and GTX 1080 (or if money really isn't an issue get a GTX Titan XP and upgrade it to the 1080 Ti when it comes out lol).

Then make sure you have enough room. I only have 1.7 x 2.2m and it works great, but you can get up to 3x3m and over if you have the space.

The cord isn't too bad in most games, you will learn to just step over it. Certain games like Holopoint and Racket NX will have you spinning and getting tangled, but you can download a program called Advanced OpenVR Settings that will tell you how many spins you made in a certain direction so you can spin the other way ingame.

You will have a lot of add-ons to buy in a few months - Wireless (TPCast) , Hi5 Gloves , deluxe audio strap for added comfort , VR15 Rifle Accessory

And I 100% suggest that you buy a few of these sleep masks, cut out the middle, and use them as faceplate cushions instead of the default one, they are way more comfortable.

And get a box of these to wipe your lenses :P

The one thing that helps me a lot is melatonin. If I get off of my sleep schedule for whatever reason (exams...) popping a melatonin the next day at my normal sleep time helps me fall asleep and then wake up feeling refreshed. It resets my sleep cycle so I can get back on schedule.

Simple, cheap, effective solution to the sleep bit. Helps you set up a sleep schedule a bit easier. If you stick to the sleep schedule for a couple weeks you will feel sleepy by default at around the time you normally go to bed. After that, just listen to your body.

Ugh I’m sorry health insurance is an issue (I’ve had my experience of not having it for a month and it freaked me out).

The book recommends taping your mouth shut with special tape. I don’t think the book recommends anything specific, but they do make social tape for it:
Sleep Strips by SomniFix - Advanced Gentle Mouth Tape for Better Nose Breathing, Improved Nighttime Sleeping, Less Mouth Breathing, and Instant Snoring Relief - Pack of 28 https://www.amazon.com/dp/B076CQ1NR8/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_i_buGzDbM1JB4SA

I almost want to try this for my husband because he snores & sleeps poorly. But I don’t think he would want to pay for a new box every month.

I wonder if there is a cheaper option.

u/hahadontknowbutt · 2 pointsr/cripplingalcoholism

I had a brief period of weird anxious physical/mental symptoms due to a medication, and what helped me sleep was getting a little vibrating thing to keep on my bed to distract my body, and leaving the radio low enough that I could tell it was voices without understanding the words to distract my mind. Without those things I was being jolted awake by extreme nausea every time I got anywhere near sleep.

The vibrating thing was a neck rest that had built-in vibration and heat that I got from the thrift store, but anything that can vibrate gently and plugs in so it will last all night should do.

Edit: Also they make bluetooth sleep masks which can play sounds from your phone. It's very immersive, and I've been wearing mine every night since my SO got it for me: https://www.amazon.com/Bluetooth-Eye-Headphones-Joseche-Microphone/dp/B07F59HQRC

You could simply take a melatonin tablet ~20-45 mins. before bedtime. Throw in some magnesium if you like.

I have been told that the best use of melatonin isn't to take it before bed, but rather earlier in the day. I don't know why my doc said this.

Melatonin makes some people a bit groggy in the morning. Some people find that it messes up their sleep cycle, and they wake up during the night. At any rate, you don't need to take it in liquid form.

u/vandaalen · 2 pointsr/stopdrinking

I had some serious issues with that. And they became even worse the longer I was sober because I had strong feeling of having wasted my time and being a looser because of having been a drinker.

Besides of reading loads of stuff ("No more Mr Nice Guy" was an eye-opener for me) I also up to now take some food supplements which are very helpful.

Particularly it's L-Tyrosin and L-Tryptophan.

The first one will help your body to produce dopamine, adrenaline and nor-adrenaline resulting in a better focus and a more IDGAF-mindset and the second one will help synthesize serotonin and melatonine, resulting in a better sleep and reducing depression.

Positive side-effects are "loosing weight". I reached kind of a zen-state now. I am much calmer and don't think about my mistakes in the past more than necessary and if I do it's more in a constructive than a destructive way.

They are no drugs and won't cause any addiction.

u/RUPTURED_URETHRA · 2 pointsr/Stims

Oh, one more thing: L-Theanine. This stuff is absolutely amazing. It has a working relationship with caffeine in the sense that it negates all of caffeine's negative side-effects, like anxiety, jitters, the caffeine crash, blood pressure spikes, etc. If you take it by itself it gives you a very subtle sense of calm and increased focus. The best thing about it is it's easy to dose (100-500 mg range) and tolerance to it develops VERY slowly. It takes away some of the anxiety that amphetamine sometimes causes and just makes the whole experience a bit smoother. This is what I use. I can't recommend it enough!

u/jayseesee85 · 2 pointsr/Random_Acts_Of_Amazon

add-ons are pesky

Though someone let me know you can order something unreleased, and an add-on, then cancel the unreleased later. I figure that's abuse though. And that's bad.

u/daddylikedat · 2 pointsr/Fitness

So? Melatonin is what your body releases to prepare you for sleep. https://www.amazon.com/Natures-Bounty-Melatonin-Dissolve-Tablets/dp/B000GG6D9A There you go. Buy some. Read Up.

u/Choscura · 2 pointsr/productivity

Well, full disclosure, I take two types of sleep aid; melatonin and something I only know as "Kirkland signature sleep aid", I googled it and found this which seems to be what I use. When I first started using this, I did wake up a bit groggy, so I cut it in half when I started using it and had better results with that.

For waking up naturally, what I didn't mention is how I wake up: I use an alarm clock (this one), and then the first thing I do is--- check facebook. This does a few things; it engages the brain, makes you socially aware, and gives your eyes a powerful dose of light exposure. All things that wake you up.

I tried the face mask mod and it worked alright. The problem was that after wearing it for about 45 minutes to an hour my face had this horrible black mark from where the mask made contact. It was like it stained my face and I had to scrub it with every cleansing agent I could find. The shit just wouldn't come off. I ended up scrubbing my face raw.

I thought maybe I just needed to clean the face mask material real good, but it didn't help. After the second time I gave up and tossed it. I'm assuming it was the dye in the material coming off my on face from the pressure and sweat. This is the one I bought after seeing it recommended.

I ended up going with this stuff instead and it's worked great. It's basically the same as what u/gamermusclevideos is recommending.

That’s an awesome routine and you’re not nuts, it’s super helpful to start a routine early! I highly, highly recommend getting an actual white noise machine. This is the one we have and it’s not too pricey and works well: https://www.amazon.com/Marpac-Hushh-White-Noise-Machine/dp/B01D50RYSC

That’s sucks about your options of doctors, I’m sorry. You don’t always have to agree with your doctor’s advice for things that aren’t putting your kids health at risk so I would understand if you wanted to stick it out, but I really love my pediatrician and treasure having that relationship. I don’t like everyone at the practice and have gotten weird advice from nurses or other doctors during sick visits and it makes me incredibly uncomfortable. Honestly, rather than speak up in the moment I usually just don’t do what I disagree with. That’s definitely an anxiety thing on my part. But my friend didn’t ever like or trust her pediatrician, has gone through some minor medical issues with her kid, and now feels like she’s stuck with this practice she dislikes just because her kid is a year old. She worries a lot about their advice and it makes me sad for her because she’s worried a lot if they’re doing the right thing. With our doctor I feel like I know if somethings a real problem or not because she tells me if she’s actually concerned or if it’s no big deal.

Man, I worked thirds for an extended period in my 20s and it blew hard. I'm going to give you a crash course in shit to do (and not do).

Respect your new sleep cycle. Yes the rest of the world runs from sun up to sun down but you don't anymore. As weird as it will feel the middle of the day is your midnight. Resist the urge, at all costs, to stay awake for things and treat it like it's staying away to 3AM or whatever. People who don't work 3rd shift will not understand this and will, at some point, be short/shitty with you over your inability to attend their "4AM" gathering.

Resist the urge to eat. Third shift workers the world over will tell you that the doldrums of the middle of the night, the monotony of most third shift jobs, the lack of sunlight, etc. will all conspire to make you want to eat. Weight gain for night shift workers is a real issue.

Pick up some doxylamine succinate tablets. It's essentially the shit in Nyquil that makes you fall asleep (but isolated from all the other compounds in Nyquil). It's a great non-addictive sleep aide that will knock you the fuck out. Seriously, if I take a full tab, even after slamming back shots of espresso all night, I'm out cold in 20 minutes or less. There will be mornings you cannot get to sleep because you drank too much coffee, you caught the sunrise and it gave you a second wind, people are working on your apartment complex, whatever... and you'll want a good sleep aide.

Do everything you can to improve your general health. There are studies after studies that pile up evidence that third shift is horrible for your health and shortens your life. Drink lots of water. Make sure you're supplementing Vitamin D because your daily sun exposure will be radically decreased (especially if you're working thirds in a northern winter climate). Get adequate sleep (and stick to a schedule just like you would if you weren't on third shift); resist the urge to sleep late into the day. Pack good meals/snacks for your shift so you're not living off Mountain Dew and candy bars. Exercise (and if you can, incorporate exercise into your night shift to help keep you awake and your body in an alert state).

Edited to add: I just reread your post after I submitted my comment and saw you're working a rotating shift. Man. That's the worst of all shifts. My third shift advice still stands but good luck getting any consistent sleep for the duration of your job.

What kind of tape would you recommend? 3M Micropore paper tape or something like this? https://www.amazon.com/Sleep-Strips-SomniFix-Breathing-Nighttime/dp/B076CQ1NR8

And do you think there's any benefit to using Flonase to encourage deeper breathing even though I don't have any allergies now?

Update: Used Nexcare Gentle Paper Tape last night (best I could find locally). Didn't have any trouble whatsoever falling asleep or staying asleep. Awoke feeling refreshed, perhaps slightly more refreshed than normal, but not eye-opening, dramatically more refreshed. Wore a DenTek Maximum Protection Dental Guard underneath. It juts out just a little, but I used 2 layers of tape, and I felt like the seal was pretty good. Woke up with a moist mouth. Noticeable saliva on the gums. Though, I will say my throat was a little dry. I might have been biting into the guard a little too much, and the impression might be rubbing on my gums. But that might have been happening anyway, and I suppose it's better to have that friction with a well moistened mouth than a dry one. I'm going to try the tape with a low-profile, disposable Plackers one that needs to be changed out every few days.

Edit: Definitely feel more refreshed, the more I dwell on it. But, could be a placebo effect.

Congratulations.

Though I'm not a parent myself, I work for a high end newborn photographer so I'll just give you tips on my observations.

  • Swaddle tight with stretchy materials and hold the arms down to the sides when swaddling

  • if mom is nursing, stay away from gassy vegetables and acidic foods as well. From our experience when the mom eats these things the baby is miserable the next day because of gas. We basically just recommend a boring bland diet. Only for the first few weeks though. After the first 3 or 4 weeks and then its usually ok. Every baby will be different so your mileage may vary. But from our experience 99% of the time we have cranky crying babies for the whole session is because mom had like spicy food or something else. Rule of thumb for us basically if the food has the potential to make your stomach uncomfortable sometimes then it might make baby uncomfortable as well

  • Get a yoga ball. trying to sooth baby, hold baby with head to your heart, sit on ball and start bouncing gently. Get yoga socks too if you have slippery floors.

  • diaper rash. Use huggies or honest brand. 9 out of 10 babies that come in with a rash are using pampers. Kirkland brand wipes from costco are great too. Our studio is stocked with huge packs of them.

  • Formulas. I'm not sure on the brands for this but don't go out buying huge amounts right away because some babies might not like them very much. Might make them gassy too so you may have to try a few brands before you land on the one that is right. There are also ones for sensitive stomachs ( more expensive though)

  • get a baby shusher or white noise, either this or this one, we use both in our studio.

  • get chux from amazon (basically look like puppy pads but are not scented or no chemicals) you'll probably seem them at the hospital. use them on your changing table, keep a few in your car. everywhere really so that where ever you are you can change baby an hopefully avoid soiling a bed/car/couch etc.
  • newborn size clothes is often too big for actual newborns
  • If you are getting photos taken 7-10 days is ideal. Most of the newborn photos you'll see are of 7-10 day old babies. Time will vary if preme or multiples. Don't wait several weeks and then still expect to get the same type of photos. at the very least try to book within 24 hours of giving birth though that may only apply to the photographer work for because most of our clients book well in advanced but there's always a few every now and then that call in trying to get in the same day and we have to behave ourselves when we explain that wont be possible.
  • Gripe water, buy it
  • Don't touch her stomach after she's given birth.
  • Get her a push present
  • have your go bag and car seat ready in the car even earlier than recommended. honestly not sure what's recommended but just do it as early as you can. a lot of our clients have been going early recently.

That's all I can think of for now. Good luck to you and don't worry nobody knows what they are doing the first time. Just by making this post looking for advice you will probably be more ready that many of the first time dads that come into our studio. Just enjoy your time together as much as possible those first few weeks and take lots of photos and videos even if its just on your phone. and back them up. babies grow so fast the first few weeks so they will never be that tiny again. Blink and its over. Oh and for the future, age 2 sucks but 3 should be good. you can usually start bribing them by 3. Again I want to reiterate that I myself and not a father (but I hope to be) so take all of this however you like. I've been working at this studio for almost a decade now (i'm 30) and these are just the things that I've seen and learned from all the parents that come in. Also, Asian babies are the best, have one of those if you can, they're usually prefect for their sessions...

Ah yeah I'm sure she'll be great there then! It may be a little noisy there still as the street to the right, Austurstræti, is a popular strip of bars & restaurants. And it's a popular way to walk over to the Laugavegur scene. We were there on a weeknight & heard some noise at 2 or 3 am, but I think it was fine once we closed the windows. That's awful. I'm so sorry that's happening.

There are others who post on here about their Nparent(s) purposely being loud and making noise to keep them on edge and anxious.

It is probably on purpose, or it's some kid of subconscious or habitual thing he's gotten used to.

You can do few things to mitigate the sound if leaving the house isn't an option, but you're really going to want to make sure he isn't aware you're doing any of them, or he will probably start paying attention to when you're trying to block him out, and escalate accordingly.

•close your door (pretty obvious)

•get noise-canceling headphones, or normal ones that go all the way around your ears and listen to music (I think they make some for listening to music that are also noise-canceling, but they might be expensive)

•get a fan (a big box fan makes the best white noise imo) or a white noise machine

I hope some of that helps. Keep us updated.

Serious answers (my CPAP nasal mask was blowing my mouth open while sleeping; you don't know cotton mouth until every inch of your mouth and throat is so dry you can't even close it).

3M Micropore surgical tape over the mouth (it's serious stuff and quite a challenge to remove in the morning). The trick is to roll your lips in, then apply it.

Also, Sleep Strips by SomniFix might work for you. In fact, if you want to try them, I have a mostly full box I can mail you (they're individually wrapped, like bandages). They didn't work as well for me as the surgical tape ... and I later re-trained myself to sleep with my mouth closed (most nights, at least).

Also, creating suction in your mouth and holding it seems to help somewhat, too.

Now I need to deal with biting my tongue while sleeping; hoping I can manage that without investing in a mouth guard.

We’ve used a Dohm since our kid was a newborn. He’s almost two now and it still goes on during naps and bedtimes. It’s great because it has a more “mechanical” whirring noise (think white noise on an airplane flight) and it isn’t fancy at all—just plug it in and choose low or high. No internet connection needed. It’s great at muffling any background noise going on in the house so we don’t have to tiptoe around when he’s sleeping.

I personally take one small hit before I go to bed every night but if that's not on the table I recommend Melatonin

This one is great. Super comfortable. Great quality, blocks ALL the light, cant even lift the head and sneak a peek out the bottom (trust me). $20.

search this sub-reddit for the sleep mask hack to replace the standard foam inserts. they're $7 on amazon, way more comfortable, and most importantly: increase the FOV (field of view). https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B013S9CPDE/

i use the sleep mask by default, but if it gets sweaty can use the originals as backups.

Just bought that mask and cut out eye holes.
If you where glasses its probably not for you. I have always heard the opposite. the closer to your eyes the more FOV, and since last night i was able to get things in focus again even on the outside.

Ok, I have slept horribly for most of my life. I've come up with things that help me, but I have to be strict with myself.

  • Have a sleep schedule for as much of the week as possible. To bed at 10:30, up at 6:30. Customize it to you. Stick to it. This is the most important component.

  • No screens 1 hour before bed. If you must, utilize f.lux on your computer or something similar on your phone. Avoid social media or reddit. You don't want your brain getting shots of pleasurable addictive like hormones when your ready to sleep.

  • Ear plugs. Just enough to dampen odd noises. These are what I use: Howard Leight Earplugs. Yes their pink, but their low strength and I still hear my alarm.

  • Eye mask.

  • Have a set schedule before bed. Snack, brush teeth, floss, wash face, insert other self care here.

  • Optional: I downloaded the app Calm. They have stories you can listen to that help you fall asleep. One read by Stephen Fry!

    Best of luck friend <3

(About the ear plugs and eye mask, the reason I started using these is because I read a study about how to help people sleep in hospital settings. The eye masks and ear plugs helped participants in the study.)
u/nvaus · 2 pointsr/LucidDreaming

It's way overpriced in stores. Amazon has it for a fraction of the price of Walmart: http://amzn.com/B003KLROVY

Also, one of the Walmart melatonin brands I tried before discovering it on Amazon hit me like an energy drink, gave me terrible insomnia.

u/zemeron · 2 pointsr/bdsm

Do it before she arrives. It is more difficult to set them yourself but once you have them in place you can hide the straps easy. And I don't recommend leaving the room, but I do recommend a blindfold. I've listed below some cheap starter equipment if you are looking for more tools to play with. Generally I will start slow and work up to something be it an orgasm, or paingasm and then start the cooldown.

So start slow, build up, climax of some sort, then aftercare. Remember the aftercare. Seriously, aftercare. I generally will take some virgin coconut oil and give my sub a massage after we play.

  • Blindfold - Cheap version ($10 http://amzn.com/B001E7BPPW) Expensive nice version (http://amzn.com/B003CGJRNK)
  • Cuffs - Neoprene with velcro ($14 http://amzn.com/B0052Z8UUK) are the easiest but alot of people like handcuffs ($10 http://amzn.com/B001D4XSYM) but the metal is really taxing on a sub. Leather ones are the best IMO but not cheap (http://amzn.com/B007W52ACW)
  • Forced orgasms/orgasm denial - The hitachi magic wand is best for this ($47 http://amzn.com/B0089175GE). It's expensive but worth it. Plus you can buy attachment heads for it down the road.
  • Rope play (Shibari) - You can grab some soft rope for bedroom play ($13 http://amzn.com/B002UV70DM) and visit twistedmonk.com for some instructional videos. For serious rope work you might want to invest in hemp ropes from twistedmonk and sissors for cutting free (http://amzn.com/B001D6YXIU)
  • Sensation play - feathers ($7 http://amzn.com/B0026I02JI), tickling, pinwheels ($10 http://amzn.com/B000B7N1DA), ice (free, check your freezer)
  • Spanking/slapping - Using a hand and staying in roughly the safe areas (ass, tits) till you know limits and interest levels
  • Nipple clamps - Get some aligator nipple clamps that are adjustible so you can start out light and work your way up to harder ($10 http://amzn.com/B002JVWZSI). If you like you can add weights to them down the road
  • Wax play - You will want to buy special paraffin candles that melt at lower temp for dripping melted wax on your partner ($10 per candle http://etsy.me/18Gwv7b)
  • Floggers - You can make a call on this based on your experience with spanking ($40 and up http://flogmebaby.com/)

These toys should give you a good baseline on what you like and what you don't. From there I would look around at places like stockroom.com or extremerestraints.com and find out what interests you. Stockroom.com has some of the best selection but is expensive.

    Best of luck.

Description|Hey everyone! In preparation for my red eye flight in September, I’ve compiled a list of 12 tips to get you asleep on your next overnight flight. The goal is to have a full night sleep on the plane so I can enjoy my first day in Scotland without feeling too weird, tired and cranky. Plus, hopefully it’ll set me up for a mostly jet-lag free trip! Buy one of these for her to turn on in the room you're in when she needs to go. https://www.amazon.com/Marpac-Classic-White-Noise-Machine/dp/B07BQYMNLF/?th=1

EDIT: I forgot to add that I have a friend who will not use the bathroom at my house because I don't have a lock on the bathroom door. These problems run deep as they're developed at such a young age when embarrassment happens and gets set in stone.

u/Yokuo · 1 pointr/Random_Acts_Of_Amazon

I've got random add-ons in my food list, as well as a few in other places. These Melatonin Tablets are a huge priority though, since I've been having trouble sleeping and these could help with that. So, if I win, please surprise me, but make the Tablets part of it. :)

Those Himalaya's of the mind!

u/Crimdusk · 1 pointr/LifeProTips

The Lewis N. Clark Comfort Eye Mask has a pillow that runs along the bottom to block just such light intrusions. Would recommend. It's made of a cloth material; occasionally i'll prefer my silk one - but this is my 'daily driver'.

u/MissScarlett88 · 1 pointr/femalefashionadvice

Do you use a sleep mask? I've had a lot of issues with insomnia (generally better now, but still a recurring thing-- on Friday I woke up at 3am and didn't fall back asleep). My mom does, too, and she bought me (and herself) several of these. I like that there's room so that you can open your eyes and it's still dark.

u/sedona03 · 1 pointr/isfj

Que será, será. / Whatever will be, will be.

Focus on you and your own goals. You don't know if your influence might have a positive effect on them later on. In the mean time, pick up some nice ear plugs and a sleep mask.

u/YourNameHere04 · 1 pointr/Parenting

I'd just get one of those simple ones that aren't necessarily meant for kids, you definitely want to be able to plug it in so that you don't have the change the batteries if you're going to run it all night. I'd think this would be fine. Just make sure it's far enough away that he can't get to the cord.

u/deliriousriot · 1 pointr/travel

I was never able to sleep on long flights until I got one of these contoured sleeping masks. It'll look like you're wearing a tiny bra on your face, but they do an amazing job of blocking out the light. My advice: try putting this on around what would be bedtime in the new time zone and keep it on for as long as you can stand it, whether you end up falling asleep or not. Exposing yourself to light during "daylight hours" in the new time zone and keeping things dark during "nighttime hours" will do a world of good.

I know a bunch of people have already said this, but I'm tossing in my input too. I couldn't stand sleep masks until I got one that didn't sit directly against my eyes. It's amazingly comfortable and I wear it all the time. As a bonus, it looks hilariously like a miniature bra. This is the specific one I use/have successfully gotten my mom and boyfriend to both use. We have a Hushh sound machine and I absolutely love it. It's portable, rechargeable, and the sound quality is good. Can't recommend this one enough!

Apologies for the late reply.

Nail-biting is an unconscious habit. What I did was try to be more conscious of my self. What I was doing, what I was thinking, when I had anxiety, etc. That's step one. When I bite my nails, it's because I'm so deep inside my own thoughts, my own head, that I don't realize what I'm doing.

If you've got trouble with anxiety, I recommend L-Tryptophan. Works wonders for me.

it's the most multipurpose item I got. we've used it as a breastfeeding/pumping cover while out, it blocks out light over the car seat when she's overstimulated or needs a nap, and now that she's older we've used it as a seat cover in shopping carts and high chairs in restaurants when we forgot to bring our own little pop-up one.

Also, Amazon doesn't offer them but some sites have bottle samplers. I would try one of those before you go all in on one type of bottle. I researched the crap out of bottles, went in hard on the nanobebe bottles, daughter gets here and can't latch to them. ended up using Dr. Brown's and having a lot of useless nanobebe stuff lying around taking up space. the samplers will let you try a bunch of different optand see which one babe likes best before you commit to buying a ton of one kind.

Funny you should ask. Like other commenters I recently purchased a sleep mask to block out morning sunlight. For that purpose it has changed my life - no more waking up at sunrise. But it is well suited for bedroom play as well. It is super comfy, not bulky, has pads around the eyes so no pressure on the eyes, blocks all light, and stays in place.

Whenever I've been slaving away in the studio for a long time, and need to zonk out for the night (or day) and can't seem to do so naturally or in a timely fashion, I just take a single 25mg tablet of Doxylamine Succinate (brand name: Unisom). It's an antihistamine similar to Diphenhydramine HCl (brand name: Benadryl), but quite a bit more potent in my experience, which is why I prefer it over diphenhydramine.

First generation antihistamines like doxylamine and diphenhydramine were originally developed to treat allergies, but since they (unlike their more recently developed chemical compound cousins) also tend to have the side effect of causing mild to moderate drowsiness, they're also frequently packaged and sold as sleep aids. You can find drowsiness-inducing antihistamines like doxylamine and diphenhydramine at most drug stores, in either the sleep aid or allergy section. If you are feeling scientific, you could buy a travel package of each, and see which one works better for you before buying a big bottle.

If you end up going with doxylamine as your knock-me-out pill of choice, want the best available price-per-unit, and don't mind waiting a couple days for shipping, Amazon has a killer deal on them.

Hope this helps!

I would definitely ignore the hate... I took my 3 year old and 6 month old with us in November and everything was fine. Just prepare for a different Disney trip. You'll have more fun if you go in with a more relaxed attitude about your experience. If you go in planning on a non stop day sprinting from place to place, you're going to be miserable. We would go in when it opened, hop in a line, go to a fastpass, took turns with the 6 month old when there wasn't a ride for her, and found quiet / cool places for an after lunch stroller nap. We would leave the park each day around dinner time so we didn't push our luck.

We bring this with us everywhere we go which definitely helps when the youngest is tired and needs a break. Good luck!

TL;DR Cheap HDM lippage solution
If anyone has been in Rec Room Dodgeball or tried Out of Ammo, HDM slippage can be a problem especially if you are using a modded face cushion, i.e. sleep mask. Two solutions, one is tear apart an old bicycle helmet and use the rear strap for an adjustable fit. While this worked well for me, when I demoed I would run into a person now and then that wasn't comfortable with it. I needed a softer more elegant solution. Holy shit, it was right under our noses. I kept the straps I had cut off of this mask ( https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0142TUPE0 ) slipped it through the buckles on the Vive and viola, a beautiful, comfortable, adjustable, and CHEAP solution. I can attest it works well and I will trim and fine tune the ends on the buckle side to have a more elegant and fixed attachement. Hope this has some value to the community that has given me an incredible amount of value.

Now the machine is so loud that I can take a bath in the adjacent bathroom and he sleeps thru it.

I also tried another one, which is nice but not as loud as the other one, and so not as effective:

Remember just like meds you may have to tweak brands and dosages in order to find the most effective results. But you should get relief within about a week of doing at least these two things.
A combination of all of this though took me from incapable of functioning and working a job to almost completely normal and now very successful at work and still improving.
