The mechanical noise generators have a wonderful "real" whooshing noise. There are more expensive brands, but this is all you need:

http://www.amazon.com/Sleep-Easy-Sound-Conditioner-Machine/dp/B00GFSF402

While digital white noise generation is ok for some people, if you are an active-mind type you'll find yourself keying-in on the loop (pattern recognition) and starting to anticipate it. Not a very restful state.

Edit: To all the people who use fans for noise generation, changing to a sleep easy will probably pay for itself in electricity usage. Somewhere between a fifth and a tenth of the power usage.

u/RedCornSyrup · 47 pointsr/JusticeServed

You should check into one of these. They're worth every penny.

u/samfuller · 35 pointsr/Advice

Buy yourself a white noise machine. I bought one when I was living in Brooklyn. I was sick of being woken up by car alarms and random yelling. Blankets the whole room in a soothing "hum".

u/Huffheinz · 29 pointsr/BuyItForLife

You can also get a white noise machine that makes noise without blowing much air. It's just a little fan in a container with holes in it. They work very well.

This is the one we use. Ours is great. It was actually my MILs, it's lasted a long time.

Normal bathroom fans require you to cut into drywall.

We had this one for a long time and it's adjustable so you can adjust the pitch of the noise a little. However, I think it was a little lower-pitched than the video you posted at our regular setting (we don't have it any more though, so I'm not sure).

I have really bad tinnitus. Get an old school white noise machine, it’s much better than music.

Yeah, the Dohm (which I see/hear used a lot - we have 2) is actually pink noise and not white noise. But most people don’t know about the colors so they call it white noise.

The only things that worked for me are a white noise generator or moving elsewhere.

Noisy people never stop being noisy.

And if you can still hear them, get a white noise machine to keep in your room, near the door.

I'm a REALLY light sleeper. Naturally I own one cat who wanders the halls at night, wailing (for no reason at all), and one who runs around like an idiot all night (at 13 years old!!).

Drowning them out is your best defense. The white noise machine is a good start (I like this one). Add ear plugs if necessary.

I have a family history of sleep struggle, including a father who has a CPAP machine. This is what I do for sleep:

  • No alcohol.
  • Make my room as cold as it can be without freezing to death. Usually I set the temperature to somewhere in the 60's.
  • Turn on a fan to have continuous airflow/circulation/additional noise
  • White noise maker. This has been one of the best purchases, I use the Lectro Fan
  • Don't eat a few hours before sleep.
  • Don't nap. I used to randomly fall asleep in front of the TV for 30 minutes after a hard gym workout, but realized that it was making falling asleep at my normal time more difficult. I cut it out and force myself to stay awake until my normal sleep time. If I am tired that day I'll goto bed a little earlier than usual.
u/lynkfox · 12 pointsr/Parenting

Second the white noise. We got https://www.amazon.com/Marpac-Classic-White-Noise-Machine/dp/B000KUHFGM this model and it is incredible. Mechanical, super soothing, changed our kids sleeping habits almost instantly.

u/winteriscummming · 11 pointsr/oakland

Probably not the answer you want to hear, but do you use a white noise machine? I have a neighbor whose dogs bark all night long, and I finally picked one of these up on Amazon and it helps keep me sane. Lecteofan

u/hometowngypsy · 11 pointsr/TrollXChromosomes

I bought an amazing white noise machine because my neighbor's dogs love to bark a lot at night. It's the best thing ever- you could just saw you need an extra white noise machine to help you sleep now that you don't have the noisy fan anymore.

This is the one I swear by. I even bought an extra one to travel with.

u/mothstuckinabath · 11 pointsr/beyondthebump

I used a white noise machine with my first kid starting when she was a baby, and she still uses & loves it today. She's 10. I use one too! It's scientifically proven to help you sleep better, plus it just blocks out some noise. To be most effective, get a white noise machine that uses actual air to create the noise, rather than a digital recording. It really fills the room without sounding harsh or grating. I love this one. It's $50 but it completely gives us our money's worth.

You have my absolute sympathy, we lived in an apartment for our first baby and now we're in a house for our second, and it really is a whole different ball game.

u/dirtyjoo · 10 pointsr/AskNYC

Have you looked into putting one of these in your bedroom?

u/TheSandwichKing · 10 pointsr/AdviceAnimals

As someone who is constantly on the road and also a full-blow fan-while-I-sleep addict I have to recommend the Marpac Dohm-DS.

It's "real" white noise caused by the movement of air, but can be packed extremely easily. Trust me, it saved my life and marriage.

http://www.amazon.com/Marpac-DOHM-DS-Natural-actual-Machine/dp/B000KUHFGM

u/mandalore84 · 9 pointsr/daddit

Agree with the others: getting them used to low level noises is the way to go. In the meantime, I also recommend some soothing white noise. I've used one of these for two girls, they're great. Works plugged in the bedroom and runs of AA batteries.

u/Delores_Herbig · 9 pointsr/InteriorDesign

Ok so I used to live in an apartment with thin walls, and as a light sleeper it drove me nuts.

Years ago, I got one of these. It sounds like a constant fan noise, but it blends in so well that you stop hearing it pretty much immediately, but it keeps outside noise from bothering you too much. I would sometimes fall asleep without it on, only to wake up repeatedly throughout the night, until I realized what the issue was.

I live in a much quieter place now, but I still find it helpful and comforting to sleep to.

u/brock_lee · 9 pointsr/whatisthisthing

I think most of us are light sleepers. White noise is the only way I can sleep, been using one on my nightstand, and one on my wife’s for over ten years. We take one with us on trips.

https://www.amazon.com/Marpac-Classic-White-Noise-Machine/dp/B00HD0ELFK/ref=sr_1_5?keywords=White%2Bnoise&qid=1565529113&s=gateway&sr=8-5&th=1

u/ArcFlash · 9 pointsr/HomeImprovement

This is the right advice: what you need is good ear plugs and a white noise machine. Not all ear plugs are created equal, I highly recommend these:

https://smile.amazon.com/Flents-Quiet-Please-Plugs-Pair/dp/B001J4HB1C/ref=sr_1_7_s_it?s=hpc&ie=UTF8&qid=1523900711&sr=1-7&keywords=earplugs

I have this noise machine, and it works great at drowning out traffic/ambient noise. I find it works well in conjunction with the earplugs:

https://smile.amazon.com/Marpac-Classic-White-Noise-Machine/dp/B00HD0ELFK/ref=sr_1_6_s_it?s=hpc&ie=UTF8&qid=1523900773&sr=1-6&keywords=noise+machine

u/FAHQRudy · 8 pointsr/scifi

No, I agree with the problem. I have tried a bunch of ambient apps and I can notice the loop edit right away and find myself waiting for it. It does not make falling asleep an easy feat when you are fully alert and waiting for the pattern to repeat.

This, in my opinion, is the only way to fly.

u/illuxion · 8 pointsr/pics

I have the marpac noise maker, it just stresses me out. I also use the ceiling fan as a noise distraction, but my problem is not being able to shut my brain down. I constantly think about this project, that meeting, did I remember to roll out the patch to that site. I need to get back into reading or some other distraction to help turn off my brain and stop being such a worry wart all the time.

u/Leezardy · 8 pointsr/whatisthisthing

It's this white noise maker so that you don't overhear people having therapy.

Marpac DOHM white noise machine

Red Gummy Bear Nighlight

  • Use a real white noise machine. We used a battery operated one in a stuffed animal. Yeah, sure it's cute, but it didn't do crap. The Marpac got our daughter sleeping through the night.

  • Use a red light when tending to your child in the night. It doesn't disturb their sleep cycle. We were using a dimmed lamp, but our daughter would wake and stay awake and want to play. We started using this, and she would go back down A LOT easier.
u/r00tyt00ty · 8 pointsr/Austin

Honest question here, have you looked into a white noise machine? or running a fan? https://www.amazon.com/HoMedics-SS-2000G-Relaxation-Machine-Nature/dp/B00A2JBMRE/ref=sr_1_4_a_it?ie=UTF8&qid=1491827208&sr=8-4&keywords=white%2Bnoise%2Bmachine&th=1 is what I use, have it set to White Noise, roomie has theirs set to Ocean and it sounds like the beach.

u/[deleted] · 8 pointsr/malelivingspace

Honestly, if that’s your schedule, and you’re not doing anything insane like throwing a party or blasting music, I wouldn’t worry about it. There are things that they can do to reduce incoming noise in their space. Apartment living is rough sometimes. If you’re really feeling bad about it though, you could do carpet, that foam flooring like you see in gyms, or just move your workspace to your kitchen or living room if that’s possible. Concrete is tough because it doesn’t really dissipate vibration. Earplugs, fans, headphones, Marpac Dohm (https://www.amazon.com/Marpac-Classic-White-Noise-Machine/dp/B00HD0ELFK), acoustic foam on the ceiling... these are all things that they can try before complaining about your normal routine imo. I know it may sound dickish, but if you’re not being unreasonable, they shouldn’t need to be either.

u/slimedaddy23 · 8 pointsr/privacy

I have that exact same pouch and it definitely does the job. I put my phone in, and within a minute or so, I'll unvelcro it, look and my signal is gone. I will also try calling it while it's in the pouch and it does not ring.

Here's a new spin on being extra private as well. Put one of these in a large tupperware storage container, with the lid open/closed your preference. Then place your phone inside the container. The phone will only be able to pick up white noise, and the container keeps from hearing any outside conversations. I've been doing this lately because it makes me feel more comfortable that my conversations aren't always on record via my phone. You can also keep your ringer on loud so you can see whether or not you get notifcations as well.

u/joefuf · 7 pointsr/churning

I've brought a LectroFan Micro everywhere I've gone for the last four years and never regretted it. A white noise machine has vastly improved my sleep quality everywhere I've traveled.

It has eight hours of battery life. Plus it doubles as a Bluetooth speaker.

u/MSschifino · 7 pointsr/Parenting

My Fiance, my 3 year old (possibly ADHD) daughter, and I went on a 13 hour road trip to see family just a few weeks ago.

It went incredibly well, seriously.

My Plan:
Bring lots of dry snacks and things she normally has, and some things that are limited treats. We brought Lemon Zest Luna bars, lots of NutriGrain bars, fruit cups, pudding cups, single serving snacking crackers. We also brought a cooler for her to have her lactose-free milk and propel waters chilled.

I bought a few look and find books for her (Jake and the Neverland Pirates, Sofia the First, and Bubble Guppies), loaded her ipad with episodes of Wally Kazaam, Little Einsteins, and a couple of movies she hasn't seen in a long time (Finding Nemo and Monster's Inc). I also bought some Crayola Color Wonder coloring books and markers.

We started off the trip without any entertainment, no music/movies/books, just conversation. After about 3 hours, she fell asleep (it was around her usual nap time). After she woke up from her nap she was a little irritated that we were still on the road, so I broke out the ipad and snacks.

After she would settle down, we'd take a break from entertainment and just talk. We rationed entertainment for when she was getting uncomfortable.

Even though she's been potty trained for over a year, I dressed her in a Pull-Up in case we couldn't get to a bathroom in time, or if she had an accident while asleep (something that does happen at home).

For sleeping, we brought her own sheets, pillowcase, and mattress cover, oh and her special blanket. We brought along her white noise machine as well. This is her Dohm and it seriously saves my life on a regular basis. We did semi-normal bedtime routines in both hotels and my in-laws.

I was incredibly stressed out before the trip, just try to write a real plan down that fits with your kids. You know them best! I tried to research things to do on road-trips, but my daughter could really care less about license plates haha.

Good luck!

I've had the marpac below for 5+ years without any issues. I can't imagine sleeping in the city without it.

u/Mighty_Andraste · 7 pointsr/beyondthebump

Not sure if you’re set on music, but Lectrofan has 10 fan sounds and 10 colored noise sounds (white, brown, etc) - it has the option to turn on and play forever or you can set it for an hour if you want.

u/EnglishSubtitles · 7 pointsr/Brooklyn

I second and third all the previous comments that suggest contacting your community board, city councilman and other elected officials.

Since you're the parent of a newborn, you need immediate help to improve the situation. So I suggest getting a white noise sound machine to help you and the kids sleep. Here's one I found on [Amazon]
(https://www.amazon.com/Adaptive-Sound-Technologies-LectroFan-Non-Looping/product-reviews/B00E6D6LQY) but there seem to be many good options. Good luck!

u/MaudeDib · 7 pointsr/oakland

I feel your pain, I really do! This exact same thing happened to me, except it was a barking dog who lived in an apartment directly behind me. It would bark for 5 minutes straight. Stop for 30 seconds, then the wind would blow or a mouse would fart and it would start all over again. Like you, I put a note on the front door of the complex, tried contacting the management of the building to no avail.

What ended up working for me was to take a few videos (so no one thought I was exaggerating) and then posted a nicely worded message on nextdoor.com with a link to the videos.
In order to get their attention with all the flotsam and jetson, I titled the post with the address: DEAR 12345 MAIN STREET RESIDENTS - I NEED YOUR HELP or something like that. I spoke directly to the dog owner, "You may not be aware your dog has separation anxiety and barks non-stop from X to Y o'clock each day." I posted a link to a google photos gallery with a bunch of videos of the dog barking day and night, explained there are many treatments and remedies available for separation anxiety and then asked the other residents of the address in question to please show their neighbors this posting, in case the dog owner in question wasn't on nextdoor.com

Anyway - it worked. A few days later the barking pretty much stopped. I think they started taking the dog to doggie day care.

I wish you luck, I hope you get some resolution. In the meantime, if you want to save your sanity, get one of these sound machines. You will be amazed how well they work for all manner of annoying sounds: The 5:30AM garbage truck, barking dog, folks in the hallway by your apartment, the couple next door making exuberant love, the kids playing in the backyard next door, etc etc. I swear by the Marpac brand, but there are plenty to choose from. Just get one that makes a sound via mechanical means (fan) and not electronic. I find that the electronic ones don't fill up the room the way the mechanical ones do. Also, the electronic ones are a recording and so they loop. Your brain WILL discover where it loops.

What type of sound is it?

If its slamming doors, heavy bass etc thats structural vibration and there is basically shit all you can do with that.

If you are looking at just deading sound (TV, non heavy bass) then a cheaper solution is just white noise machines. I have had similar to below where I slept in a room with basically closet doors in an apartment full of 5 people and didn't have a problem drowning out the noise.,

The best purchase my wife and I made was a dohm sound machine. Have you tried an actual white noise machine? And I don't mean the electronic kind but this kind. There's a small fan in the box, and you can adjust the tone and noise level by swiveling the outside casing to adjust the size of the holes. It works very well.

u/wafflesareforever · 6 pointsr/AskMen

You need a mechanical one like this.

u/FatPeaches · 6 pointsr/TrollXChromosomes

White noise machine will drown out most/all of the noise. It'll take a night or two to get used to it but then you'll never sleep without it on ever again.

I had the same problem. I used a fan on high for white noise and it worked great.

I've also read that these little devices are amazing:

http://www.amazon.com/Marpac-Dohm-DS-Speed-Sound-Conditioner/dp/B000KUHFGM

u/drjimmybrungus · 6 pointsr/AskNYC

Keep your windows open and then use a white noise machine to drown out the loud street noises so you can sleep.

u/JoNightshade · 6 pointsr/Parenting

This is the one you want right here! It's fantastic. You can make the white noise low or high pitched and it just goes forever because it's a fan, not a recording. It also has two speeds, so you can make it REALLY loud if you need to drown out some extra noise (or siblings!)

We actually have two of these, one for each kid, and we take one whenever we travel. It's a bit spendier than some others ($50), but totally worth the price tag. We've had the first one for several years now and it shows no sign of quitting.

u/JimmieC123 · 6 pointsr/WaltDisneyWorld

I use this. It's actual white noise because it is generated by fan. Same one that they use in doctors and therapists offices. Travels easy too.

Congratulations! All units are different, so I'll just say ask questions. Don't let yourself become a jaded judgemental asshole. You get to go home. No matter what they did to themselves, there is a human in that bed having the worst time of their life. That's punishment enough.

As to joining the under world:

Sleep hygine. Do all 3 shifts in a row. Get home before the sunlight gets on top of you and you get the dreaded second wind. Eat, drink, shower and sack out fast. Splurge on a nice bed and linens. Pack lunches and eat clean. You can and will pork out fast on night shift living on pizza and donuts.

Black out window covers
These are better than any shades or curtains. No light gets in. Meth house level coverage. I could never sleep with a mask on, so these were a must.

White noise machine There are tons of options for this. Most are some recorded loop which your brain fixates on the pattern of, and does the opposite of making you sleepy. This is truly white noise from a fan and you can adjust the volume and pitch by twisting it and adjusting the venturi's. They've been made sine the 70's and I also used them in my kids room, have seen them in doctors offices, etc. No need for ear plugs with one of these.

Another option is a sound machine. I bought this to solve the issue of noisy upstairs neighbors. Life changing. If I am spending the night somewhere else my first thought is "Should I bring my sound machine?" Didn't take me long at all to get used to. And now whenever I turn it on my brain knows it's sleep time.

I got one of these. It's not electronic and just like a fan type thing. I just wanted a white noise machine... Not waves or crickets or jungle sounds, etc. This works wonders...I live along a busy road near an airport and this lets me sleep so much better. No looping sounds

Get a white noise maker. Not a white noise app on your phone or computer - it's not the same as a real white noise maker with a fan. I use this one.

I get triggered by car and motorcycle engines revving. I live near a military base with tons of idiots revving their idiotmobiles down the street - the sounds aren't loud, but if I can hear them (usually when I'm trying to sleep at night), I'm very uncomfortable. The white noise maker has made a huge difference in my quality of life.

For the sweet tooth (like my dad, these are all things he likes):

  • A candy jar or bowl filled with her favorite candy.

  • An artisan ice cream scoop.

  • An ice cream maker. You could get an ice cream recipe book as well.

  • One of my dad's favorite gifts was a sugar dispenser... I think that shows his level of sugar commitment.

  • Some artisan marshmallows.

  • A milk frother that doubles as a hot chocolate maker.

For the executive (like my mom, these are all things she likes):

  • A high quality thermos for coffee on the way to work.

  • A smart home setup, maybe an echo and some smart outlets or the google home. Really good for turning lights on/off, asking for the weather and news, listening to music, etc.

  • A FitBit to help her keep healthy even working long hours.

  • A popcorn maker that allows you to make non-microwaved popcorn in the microwave.

  • A white noise machine. If she has any trouble sleeping this thing is AMAZING.

  • A Roku or Chromecast that makes it easier to watch Netflix on the TV.

  • Wine tasting or cooking class that you can do together. Really my mom loves doing stuff with her family.

If it is for convenience get a headband and have it hold your earbuds in place.

Or buy such a product with it built in.

But I would rather recommend a white noise machine to leave in your room for tinnitus. Though such a machine can't play for you ASMR videos.

It's mechanical as opposed to being something playing a recording on a loop, so it definitionally can't result in that issue you're describing of noticing when the loop restarts.

My girlfriends Pomeranian barks when I fart. Just something we accept. You can try something like a white noise maker for when you're sleeping. It might help drown out the sound. It can also help you sleep.

My shrink uses it too outside their offices when seeing patients so others can't hear therapy sessions outside the door.

u/realityno · 5 pointsr/legaladvice

You do realize it costs way more to pay a lawyer for one hour than it does to move dorms once even twice then? Try buying a white noise machine. This is a popular white noise machine.

u/BranWafr · 5 pointsr/Parenting

This is the model we've had for almost 2 decades. Got it when my now High School age daughter was a baby and still use it. Has multiple settings (Rain, ocean, jungle, etc...) and has a simple timer if you don't want it on all night. I highly recommend it.

u/Nickilas · 5 pointsr/ADHD

No, it's not like a sound file that loops. It's literally got a real fan inside of it. Here's the one I have on Amazon:

https://www.amazon.com/Sleep-Easy-Sound-Conditioner-Machine/dp/B00GFSF402

u/rootb33r · 5 pointsr/gadgets

I have both. Sometimes you don't want moving air, and the noise machine also hits some frequencies that the fan doesn't which helps with some noises.

I live in NYC and experience a lot of environmental noise.

edit: I highly recommend the Dohm sound machine

u/Sunbrewed · 5 pointsr/beyondthebump

We have a Dohm white noise machine; it's the sound of air rather than digital sound and I love it. We got it for our twins but I sleep with it on for me at this point. Perhaps white noise would help you.

Here's what we have:

https://www.amazon.com/Marpac-Dohm-DS-Natural-Sound-Machine/dp/B00HD0ELFK/ref=sr_1_1_a_it?ie=UTF8&qid=1494710656&sr=8-1&keywords=dohm%2Bbaby&th=1

u/baby_monitor1 · 5 pointsr/parentsofmultiples

Yes, it gets better. It might take awhile, but it gets better.

Our twins didn't fully sleep through the night for 11 months. It was not a fun experience; honestly I was a zombie for basically a year and I really don't remember much of it. We were woken up 3-6x per night that entire time. Not fun.

BUT, now, our girls are a month shy of being 2 and they sleep like champs. I honestly can't remember the last time I had to get up in the middle of the night to do something for them. They go down in their cribs between 7:30-8pm, we close the door, they might whine for 5 minutes or less, and then they're asleep until we wake them up in the morning.

Do you have some sort of white noise machine? We have one of these in their room and it works great (in fact we have one in our bedroom too).

u/argella1300 · 5 pointsr/TwoXADHD

Yes, do it. Even if it turns out you don't have ADHD, you'll at least have ruled that out and can focus on getting treated for whatever else you may have.

Also: talk to the department that runs student disability services at your school. It's slightly different everywhere, sometimes they're connected with the tutoring center, sometimes they're part of the general administrative services, it varies from school to school. They can help you out with getting testing and filing paperwork with the school so you can get accommodations. Especially for exams, since going by how you describe how your ADHD affects you, taking your exams in an alternative environment would probably do you a world of good.

Another thing, consider picking up a white noise machine from Amazon. The sound they make doesn't sound all that different from when the air conditioning is blowing through the vents, and they're effective at blocking out annoying noises all around you.

u/ewilliam · 4 pointsr/firstworldproblems

I know, it's meant ot be a humorous FWP post, but we have 2 of these noise machines (one for us, one for our toddler) and they are really great.

Failing that, (if we're traveling and don't feel like packing it, etc.), we use the whitenoise app for the iPhone in concert with some little portable speakers.

u/greentintedlenses · 4 pointsr/malelivingspace

If you are this concerned with the looks of a fan In a dorm room, specifically when it's only being used for ambient noise.. I'd suggest a sound conditioner instead. Like this one https://www.amazon.com/Marpac-Dohm-DS-All-Natural-Machine-Actual/dp/B000KUHFGM

  2. put in babies room.
  3. turn on.
  4. enjoy sleep again. :)

I use a basic Homedics white noise machine ($20 on Amazon), and it works great. I grew up on white noise machines, and they definitely help me sleep more rested. My wife feels the same way, and she never used one before meeting me.

If you want to try it for a night or two, check out the app White Noise Free. The brown noise setting is the closest thing to my white noise machine, and the app is great to bring on trips.

u/Snickershine · 4 pointsr/badroommates

I'm having motherfucking flashbacks goddamn.
Sounds just like the room mate I kicked out of MY apt last night because he wanted to stay an extra day because he's tired oh boo hoo.

Oh! And about the light! I too am a very light sleeper! I have all the good suggestions for you, friend!!! So, I have a noise maker.
https://www.amazon.com/LectroFan-Fidelity-Machine-Unique-Non-Looping/dp/B00E6D6LQY
Best one on the market, changed my gd life. My fiance snores. Even when she is quite loud, I just put it all the way up, right next to my head and I can sleep. Not the most comfortable way to sleep but I can still sleep!

I wear earplugs. Have since I was 11.
AAAND if I need to I wear a sleep mask. Soft thing. Takes a bit to get used to but it's so nice.
I use it every night because my fiance's fan light in her computer is bright green! So bright I can see it a bit through my eyelids! But it's okay because I have my nice mask!

God the more I read the more I nod my head. Mine was the same! Just seeing him made me seethe.
Now I would probably care some if he died. But I've had room mates where I did feel this way about. Bye.

He also chases after my fiance's exes and tries to run her friends off. So fucked.

One time he acted like her being in the hospital was an inconvenience and actually was arguing with me over text while I sat next to her hospital bed. And recently, my dog split her head open on the corner of a wall when she got scared and he SIGHED. Like this long sigh!! I couldn't believe it. Since that happened I have not been able to forgive him. We had to take her to an after hours vet because her poor head was POURING blood. Makes me sick to remember.

Who feels that way about an innocent animal? A bad person that I don't want to associate with anymore, that's who. Toxic, selfish fuck.

  1. A Dohm sound machine - seriously, this thing is amazing. My toddler still uses hers and my husband and I actually bought one for our room and we use it every night. It goes with us when we travel and it's essential to good sleep for us.
  2. Gummy bear night light - it must be red! This was recommended to me from a sleep class we took before our toddler was born and it's amazing for middle of the night feedings. You squeeze the belly and it turns on and there's a separate adapter I recommend buying so you don't run out of batteries so quickly. The red light helps your baby (and you!) fall asleep quickly so you don't have sleep that's even more disrupted.
  3. Seamless underwear - I wasn't expecting a c-section and ended up having an emergency one and I had to have my mother-in-law run to Macy's to find some seamless underwear for me because regular underwear hit exactly at my c-section scar and was extremely uncomfortable. She picked up some Calvin Klein ones and I've since purchased several pairs and I really love them, even when not pregnant, but it was something that I wasn't expecting to need. (I would find the link for them but I'm currently at work so I'll edit it later with the link, haha)

Splurge item: a baby monitor with a camera and app on your phone. We originally used a motorola one because I was convinced I needed a separate little screen and I could still see it on my phone through an app, but we recently bought a Nest camera and I love it. I love being able to see what time she goes to bed if we have a sitter, I can tell when she's gotten up in the middle of the night to go to the bathroom - even if she doesn't wake us up and its several hours later... overall, I just really love it.

u/balloffire · 4 pointsr/MaliciousCompliance

Yea I love dogs too and have one myself, so I felt like a horrible person wishing they would die, but I did. Being jarred awake like that everyday wears you down and you start to lose it a bit.

Here is the one we got. I think part of the reason it works for us though is because the neighbor's dogs are hounds and this machine has a low frequency hum that matches perfectly with their particular bark. So a yipper may not blend in as well.

u/q2553852 · 4 pointsr/videos

Have you tried using a white noise machine like this one? I used to sleep with a similar gadget right next to me and it really helped.

Overall, the best thing you can do is to try not to focus on your tinnitus in an emotional sense. Don't get caught in the loop of "I wish this would stop -> I'm miserable because this won't stop -> It won't stop because I'm focusing on it -> I wish this would stop..."

Gorgeous room!! If you haven't gotten one already, might I recommend a sound machine? I mention it because of the doors leading to possibly lively general living spaces. We have one right inside the bedroom door and it deadens most noise so we don't have to creep around the house like shitty ninjas. We also have a second, portable one which might be overkill but whatever gets us sleep gets a 👍 from me!!

In case anyone is interested we have Marpac Dohm and Marpac Hushh which also is great for clipping to her carseat!

My husband and I have had this one for close to a year. It's surprisingly tiny, but gets really loud. We don't usually have the volume all the way up. It's nice because you can easily adjust the tone and type of sound. It also (unlike many sound machines) doesn't run on a loop, so I've never experienced the weird thing with some sound machines where you start repeating noises, which drives me bananas.

We also sleep with brown noise in our room so we don’t hear baby crying from her room during our cry it out periods. We started CIO at 7 mos.

Honestly I would be really careful in the early weeks to not use them unless you are not handling baby. I would be scared about falling asleep in an unsafe position.

My baby had severe reflux (had to be medicated) and had insane “colic”....likely later known to be missed sleeping cues....and I never felt the need to muffle the crying.

u/sawmillionaire · 3 pointsr/nashville

Kinda off-topic but have you tried using a white noise machine? A really good one should drown out ambient sounds and have non-repeating white noise patterns that won't distract you. I've used the LectroFan over the past year and I sleep a lot better with it on.

My baby girl used to do this until we bought a sound machine for the car and now she either falls asleep or just sits there nicely most of the time. This company makes a larger one, but it isn't portable. I would bring this to the car when we wanted to try to have her sleep on the go. It was the gamechanger that let us shop and do other errands outside of the house with her when she was still a newborn. The phone white noise would work in the house, but not be loud enough for the car or even stroller walks.

I’m a super light sleeper, doubly so when traveling alone, and it makes such a difference. I generally can plug it in near whatever bed I’m in for the night, but it does have a rechargeable battery also. it also works as a tiny Bluetooth speaker. I wish it came with a case (I bought a tiny hard shell case separately to keep it from getting its buttons pressed in transit).

I use a white noise machine that works really well. I live right on Michigan Ave in the loop and don't have any issues with outside noise at all with the white noise machine on.

I use this one White Noise Machine but there are some good apps you can download for free and try it out. I use an app for when I'm on the road travelling but prefer the linked white noise machine better.

u/Em42 · 3 pointsr/tifu

I think this is the cheapest one actually made by the company on Amazon, it's important to get a real one, they use a fan instead of a digital noise generator, so the noise is non repeating. Basically it's not exactly white noise, it's more what they call pink noise, like having a small fountain in your room would also be pink noise, a soothing sound that doesn't repeat. The problem with digital machines is that they repeat, which can be as annoying for some people as what they're trying to cover up.

You have to determine what is different about your sleep routine when she stays over vs when she doesn't. Then try to adjust it accordingly. If it's just her presence, you will get used to it.

Also, buy a good sound machine. They have always helped me sleep. And every person who has had it in their lives for a while ends up buying one.

u/Spektr44 · 3 pointsr/explainlikeimfive

The white noise machines that play noise through a speaker are supposedly not as good as those that produce noise mechanically. This mechanical white noise machine is very well-regarded, however I own one and it still doesn't beat a box fan. With light there's a concept of getting a full spectrum light. It's similar with noise. You want a rich, wide spectrum of noise.

Barring that, there are phone apps you might try such as White Noise Lite, Relax Melodies, and Chroma Doze. Relax Melodies is pretty neat, as it lets you create custom noise by layering in different sounds. These apps are on Google Play, dunno about iTunes.

Another white noise fan. This is what I use. I like the sound of air moving better electronic white noise.

Melatonin helps me drift off. It doesn't make me sleepy, but if I'm already a little tired, my thoughts become more like dreams than thoughts, and I stop reacting to sounds or ideas. Isn't enough if I'm wired or wound up.

I also take mitrazipine now, which is similar to trazadone. They are antidepressants that are also commonly used to treat anxiety and insomnia, among other things. I take a tiny dose, specifically to help me sleep. Taking it doesn't change the rest of my medication plan, it's just a little bump. Docs commonly give trazadone to old folks who can't sleep due to evening anxiety - it's that harmless (compared to other sleep and anxiety drugs). My 93 year old grandmother who was medically frail was taking it!

I don't do this, but I diaphragmatic breathing is very helpful for bringing down the anxiety and can help get you out of your head. So peaceful. Plenty of tutorials online.

We have two of THESE and they both have been used every night for the past 6 years, plus travelling, with no failures. Night shifter for almost 4 years here. Lots of good advice here. To emphasize and adding some more:

  1. Ambient white noise is a must. I bought a really good sound machine and it helps tremendously.

LectroFan High Fidelity White Noise Machine with 20 Unique Non-Looping Fan and White Noise Sounds and Sleep Timer https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00E6D6LQY/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_Zv8dAbYHG0H79

It’s pricey but worth it if you’re gonna be on this shift for a while. It uses randomly generated white noise instead of repetitive sound loops. The loops in cheaper machines are actually bad sometimes. I can hear the patterns and start involuntarily listening for them when I should be falling asleep.

  2. Block our as much light as you can. Even blacking out windows isn’t enough if the light creeps in around the edges. If there’s any light at all, wear an eye mask. You need to trick your body into thinking it is actually nighttime because light hitting your eyes makes your body manufacture cortisol, a hormone that wakes you up and keeps you up.

  3. Speaking of hormones, on the opposite end from cortisol is melatonin, the hormone that tells your body it is time to sleep. You’re body manufactures it, but it does so during the night. You need it during the day, so you need to supplement with oral melatonin supplements. You can get them over the counter. I prefer time-release but try some
different dosages and release schedules till you find one that works.

DON’T expect melatonin to work like a sleeping pill that knocks you out hard! It’s not that. You want something that isn’t habit-forming and basically makes you sleep like you would at night. Not drug you into a coma.

  4. If you’re really struggling, take Advil PM or ZzzQuil or even a shot of something (be careful with that one; it’s habit-forming and can make you have to pee a couple hrs later). Just use them sparingly to get through a rough patch or if you just feel desperate for some solid sleep. ALSO, don’t do this if you’ve been lying awake all morning and now don’t have time for a full sleep cycle. You don’t wanna be hung over when you wake up!!

  5. Take steps to prevent you from waking up in the middle of the day!!

-Put your phone on silent. Do whatever you have to do so that the screen doesn’t light up when you get a text or whatever. Even through your eyelids, that light can trigger a cortisol rush and boom — you’re awake. Remember, you already have some cortisol on board. That light makes your body think the sun just came up and you don’t have enough melatonin to drag you back to sleep like you would at night.

-Drink plenty of fluids during your shift, but cut off all fluid intake early enough that you won’t wake up having to pee in the middle of the day. Same thing as above. Often, once you’re up you’re up and you don’t have enough mela to get you back to sleep.

-If you have a problem with waking up hungry, have a little snack before going to sleep. But not fruit or soup or anything with a lot of liquid in it if you have the above problem.

-If you have people in your life, insist that they respect your need to sleep and how difficult it is for you. To put it in perspective, when they wake you up at 12:00 to go shopping with them or ask you where the remote is, ask them how they think it would feel if you woke them up at 2:00am to do the same. And then turned on the light and left it on. Because that’s what is happening to your body when they do it.

  6. Keep a regular schedule if at all possible. Sometimes it isn’t but until your body develops some sleep flexibility it should be a priority.

  7. Nap if you can, have time, and feel the need. For a night-sleeper, a nap can make it hard to fall asleep at bedtime. But if you’re like me — always tired — a nap won’t hurt your ability to sleep later and may be what helps you make it through your shift and home without crashing your car.

You’re gonna struggle sometimes. It comes and goes for me, even with taking most of the precautions above. Just be patient and don’t get anxious because anxiety kills sleep quality (anxiety also makes us manufacture cortisol).

Best of luck! I hope you’re able to crack the code!

Time to put on your Sherlock hat... is the dog barking in response to something? Like they hear a noise? Cars, other barks, creaks?

If so, try this or this. Additionally, you can try to train a quiet command

You can also get these white noise generators when you aren't home, which help drown out both the barking sound and any sound trigger that would set your dog off.

If the dog is barking due to boredom, then there are a bunch of toys and stuff that might help, like the frozen peanut butter kongs, etc. The more exercise the dog gets, the better too - so there's the option of getting a dog walker to come in during the day if no one is home.

I think you need to spend $50 to get a good dedicated white noise machine. The LectroFan here is very highly recommended, has lots of options (different fan noises as well as different white noises), and is pretty compact. https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00E6D6LQY?tag=thewire06-20&linkCode=xm2&ascsubtag=AwEAAAAAAAAAAOGr

If you want to keep using the YouTube videos, YouTube Premium is actually a decent service. For $15 a month you get the ability to download videos, but also no ads and YouTube Music (basically like Spotify). So if you watch a lot of YouTube, your kid is getting to the age where they might get some more screen time, and you're already paying for a music streaming service, it can be very worth it.

I personally use the Lectrofan . I had a Dohm sound machine before, but since it's mechanical, it eventually became too quiet. The Lectrofan is smaller, has a better variety of noises, and can get much louder if necessary. It's easier to travel with too.

To drown out the noise in your room, the noise machine(s) would need to be in the room(s) where other people are, so it's going to depend a lot on what they like. Some people like cyclical fan noises, others like non-repeating white noise, others like deep humming or reverberation, but lots of people find such noises to be annoying or worse.

I personally love this thing: https://smile.amazon.com/Adaptive-Sound-Technologies-LectroFan-Non-Looping/dp/B00E6D6LQY/

I used it for years to drown out the sound of my cats meowing and scratching at the door. I found one of the settings on that machine blocked out most noise from outside the room and after an adjustment period I stopped really listening to the noise itself, it sorta dropped into the background.

The sound of it bothers my current NP so badly that she had to rush from the room after less than ten seconds. So be prepared for the possibility that no noisemaker is going to be a good option.

You may try instead to do some basic sound proofing. Soundproofing a room is expensive and labor intensive, but you can do a lot on the cheap to soundproof your bed itself to eliminate or reduce the squeaking/creaking/thumping. I bought a pack of rubber door jams and set them at strategic contact points between the base of our bed and the bed frame, which quiets all but the most violent of rocking motions. What works for you is going to depend a lot on your situation- both in how you have sex and what you're having sex on.

So I just moved to a new apartment yesterday in the same apartment complex. The building is brand new and the apartment is enormous. I knew it was too good to be true! I can hear literally everything. I can tell you exactly what my neighbors are watching and listen along with them. I can hear every time someone goes up and down the stairs. I had to call the leasing office to complain about the noise coming from above. Turns out they were cheerleaders practicing tumbling!

I need noise maker and reduction recommendations to drown this all out. My dog and I stressed and tired!!. I found this noise maker on amazon and thinking of buying two. Then I read tapestries or cloth on the wall really helps. I’m also going to get fans to go with the noise makers

Any other ideas??? I’m regretting my huge brand new apartment now and want my 30 year old 600 sq ft closet back!!:( I guess they don’t make them like they used to.

Have your bedroom be only for sleeping. Don't watch movies/eat/play with your phone/or do anything else in there. Create a bedtime routine for yourself that involves doing several things. Turning off all the lights in the house, checking locks, brushing teeth, setting the alarm for tomorrow. Always do those things in the same order, and always do all of them. By the time you finish your list, you'll be getting pretty sleepy.

Finally, and for me, most importantly. Make sure your room has a white noise machine, is pitch black, and is scented. I cut open my eye mask and filled it with dried lavender flowers. When I smell those, I pass out almost instantly.

It's all about putting yourself in the right state of mind to fall asleep, and sleep deeply.

u/jstracy · 3 pointsr/Portland
u/SonOfSite · 3 pointsr/gadgets

Sounds like you need a white noise machine

u/drtonmeister · 3 pointsr/HomeImprovement

I've dealt with that in shared households -- one bit of laughter, and I feel like I'm missing out on something fun and find it hard to get my "flow" back.

Many people dismiss the effectiveness of typical bedroom hollow-core doors because they underestimate the impact of the space around the edges of the door on transmission of voices into the room. A bean-bag draft-stopper at the bottom of the door and simple weatherstripping correctly applied at the edges of the doorframe will help considerably in isolating you from what is going on in the rest of the house.

In "open plan" offices where many people are working in the same room and cannot always be quiet because of phone-calls and necessary in-person communication, several techniques have been developed to help people keep attention on their work:

• The typical office cubicle carrel acts like "blinders" for a horse -- what should have your attention is within the cubicle, distractions are out-of-sight

• since sound is ineffectively blocked by the cubicle partitions, "sound masking" is used - this consists of audio speakers playing a steady "white noise" background noise that is not dissimilar to air noise from a ventilation/air-conditioning/heating system. The idea is that if speech has to be that much louder or closer for us to understand it because of the interfering noise, our brains won't attempt to parse distant speech not directed at us. There are many "sleep machine" type boxes available that do the same thing, but one can also have a noise file playing from a phone, computer, or media player through a speaker in the room. It is best early on in using this technique to start the noise at what will be an effective volume just before leaving the room for some task outside the room, then when you return the noise itself won't be so much of a distracting stimulus. Perhaps if you are in a forced-air home you could start it while the heat is running and match the noise-level of the heating system, then the background masking level would stay fairly constant as the heat cycles on and off. If you have a calibrated dB meter app, 40 to 45 dBA is the typical target sound level.

Sometimes office cubicle walls are available cheap or free on Craigslist or the equivalent, but one can also make a carrel on a desktop by using panels of any sort, such as tri-fold presentation display boards. If you can back your chair against the wall/pull out the desk so that the very little of your room is visible past the carrel, even better.

If you find that you must use a computer for study purposes, download a browser other than the one you use for social-media and recreational use, and set the parental controls of that browser to either blacklist known distracting sites or allow only whitelisted appropriate sites for your work. Then make a rule for yourself that during designated study time you may only use that browser.

Uh I'm so sorry to hear this. You definitely have a nuisance neighbor and that's so anxiety inducing on top of a chronic illness. I also have a chronic illness and work incall from home.

Have you thought about ways you can limit or muffle the noise? Do you have a carpet or can you put down an area rug? If you don't want a rug, maybe you can wear flip flops or slippers at home to help dull the noise? Do you ask clients to take their shoes off at the door?

I have a white noise sound machine that I use for sleep but a lot of psychologists use them to muffle noise in their office so people can't hear their patients. I have the professional one they use: https://www.amazon.com/Marpac-Classic-White-Noise-Machine/dp/B00HD0ELFK/ref=sr_1_7?crid=2IN38LJZ07OLK&keywords=white%2Bnoise%2Bmachine&qid=1566443701&s=gateway&sprefix=white%2Bnoise%2Caps%2C206&sr=8-7&th=1

It's pricer then the others but it's worth the $$.

I had a problem with my headboard & bed frame after 6 months of working. It was banging on the wall and creaking loudly during activity, it's a freakin miracle my neighbor next to me didn't' complain! It was a single guy so maybe he was happy to listen 😂. I ended up investing in a new bed frame when their was a memorial day sale and I'm pretty happy with my purchase. It's pretty and super quiet now.

u/iliikepie · 3 pointsr/Dogtraining

I used to have two chihuahua-mixes. One was high-anxiety.

When we also had two cats, the dogs couldn't relax unless they were in a room with the door closed where the cats could not go. The dogs would stay vigilant the entire time the cats were around. The high-anxiety dog would follow the cats around and try to herd them. We had to re-home the cats (due to allergies we weren't aware of before) and the dogs were so much calmer after that. I know you said you tried closing the door, but, maybe he won't feel relaxed unless the cats no longer live there.

Exercise also really helps with their anxiety. I understand this isn't your dog and you are doing your best. Maybe someone else will have a great idea to help in this area.

You could try a thundershirt? It didn't work for my anxious dog but there are lots of success stories.

If noises set him off, you could try a white noise machine. You can even download a white noise machine app on your phone to test it out. The dog could go in a room without cats, and have the white noise turned on.

To me it seems like you may have done everything you can. It sounds as though the dog would need a lot of training and effort to get him to be happier and more well-adjusted, and your roommate isn't willing to do that :(

You have all ready gotten some excellent security suggestions in the thread. My tip is that instead of the big fan for your tinnitus you can try a white sound machine. If it works for you, then you might be able wake up if someone breaks a window.

A white noise machine is a great idea. I have had tinnitus for 10 years (car accident/head injury). It is constant. Never a break for a minute... except when I turn on my white noise machine. I have this machine... I just turn it on, and take a break from tinnitus for a while. I have slept with it for the past 5 years.

I actually bought that thing a year before going to college. Its weird at first to explain what it is to your roommate, but turning that and a fan on should drown out noise and help you both sleep

I work 2 weeks of day shifts and 2 weeks of night shifts alternating. My trick on my 2 weeks of nights is to get to the gym at 0100 on my nights off for a long and hard workout. I find that I sleep better during the day and have no problems maintaining a totally flipped schedule. I have black out curtains, a portable air conditioner to maintain cooler room temps, and a Dohm sound conditioner to block out daytime sounds.

It took me about 8 months of flipping around to figure that this works for me. I was the most exhausted when I stayed at home bored out of my mind, fighting myself to stay awake all night. Once I started incorporating working out into my routine, my mental and physical fatigue pretty much disappeared.

White noise machine. And if it's truly screwing up your days this much, then it's well worth the money to buy. We have this one. You want to put the white noise machine where the noise is coming from. E.g. Ours is by the door and the wall to the hallway, because the noise we're trying to drown out is people walking by the room or up the stairs. If we were trying to drown out outside noise, we would put it by the window. Hope that all makes sense.

u/DoreenGreen · 2 pointsr/aspergers

I always have and probably always will have problems with sleep. I've taken many measures over the years in an attempt to make the process as painless as possible, with varying degrees of success. I can divide my methods into three categories: room preparation, personal equipment, and a sleep stack.

Room preparation is the most straightforward and the easiest to accomplish, because you generally just need to do it once and then not worry about it. In my case, I place thick blackout curtains over the windows and affix velcro to the walls so that I can secure them firmly to prevent light from leaking around the edges. Stopping it from bleeding through the top is more difficult and depends entirely on the curtain rod, though you can stick any old fabric up there to block most of it. Any blue LEDs should be blocked with either tape or a cloth. If a nightlight is needed, it should be red or orange.

Having taken care of most of the visual obstructions, the next step is to eliminate auditory distractions. Actually blocking sound is almost impossible, but measures can still be taken. Ambient noise generation can do a good job of blocking disturbances by generating a consistent level of sound that will ideally make any sudden noises less jarring. Most people go right to white noise, but other noise patterns exist, most notable pink and brown noise - you'll want to use whichever is the closest match to the intrusive noises you're most likely to experience. A good preview of the different types can be found here, and you can customize and purchase your own variant on the site if the standard varieties are inadequate. If you're annoyed by any looping in the track, you can buy a Marpac machine instead, which is entirely analog and thus has no loop.

The next piece of the puzzle is simpler but must be done consistently, personal equipment. I personally utilize a sleep mask and earplugs every night. The sleep mask should be black or some other dark color - they make white ones, but I have no idea why because they are ineffective. You might need to try a few variants before you stumble onto a tolerable one because they can feel odd. There are a nearly uncountable number of earplugs available, so you'll need to experiment there as well - fortunately they're cheap. You'll want a high DBR (decibel reduction) value, so be on the lookout for that. Particularly bad environments will necessitate drastic measures, in which case ear protection might be required. Note that only people who can sleep on their back will be able to sleep in ear protection.

Finally, we come to the sleep stack. THE FOLLOWING IS NOT MEDICAL ADVICE AND SHOULD NOT BE TREATED AS SUCH. There are numerous supplements that are useful in improving some piece of the sleep process. The cornerstone is obviously melatonin, but what's less commonly known is that less is generally better. An idea dose is .5-1mg, and higher doses experience at best a flat response and at worst a paradoxical effect. Other supplements that are generally thought to be useful are: ZMA, glycine, valerian root, and L-theanine. When beginning a new regimen, it's important to add only one supplement at a time to check for any odd effects while titrating the dosage.

Ultimately, there is only so much that can be done to counteract pervasive sensory dysfunction and enable sleep. However, these steps can at least help enough for most people to get by even if conditions are not ideal.

EDIT: I forgot to mention that blue-blocking glasses should be worn for about an hour before going to bed. These have the same effect as the flux computer program only applied to your eyes rather than just one screen.

None of your examples exist with the single purpose of triggering ASMR in people.

Binaural beats: click. Or I-Doser for the garbage that claimed it could make people high through listening to music.

Meditation sounds: they help you get in trance.

Water and nature sounds: nothing ASMR-specific. Some people like nature sounds for non-ASMR relaxation. Similar to white noise generators.

They exist for triggering other sensations in people than ASMR. Now a small percentage of listeners might have gotten ASMR from these but they were not produced for them as a target group and not for this one specific feeling. This is what sets them apart from OP’s videos.

I have a 9-5 and I lift from 7 AM - 8:30 AM. Not every workout is 1.5 hours but that's my window.

For me, the trick has been and always will be caffeine. Namely getting it into my bloodstream as fast as possible.

Here are some tactics to get out of bed:

  • Drink preworkout in bed. Have a large glass of water on the nightstand, a plastic spoon, a scoop or 2 of preworkout, pre-measured waiting to go. When the alarm goes off, dump the preworkout into the water, mix, chug, and lay back down. In 15 minutes or so the caffeine will begin to go to work. You won't be able to sleep, so get up! The plastic spoon is to save your spouse from having to listen to you mix.

  • Caffeine pill. Same as the tactic above. Wake up, slam, and lay back down. You won't be snoozing for long.

  • If you can actually get out of bed and get caffeine into you quickly, it's a lot easier to get your day started. I crankily wake up, drink preworkout in the kitchen, and then force myself to pack my gym bag and clothes for the day. After 5-10 minutes, I feel fine.

It's never going to feel great waking up super early to lift, but after a while, it just becomes a part of your schedule.

Lastly, try to wake up at the same time every day regardless if it's a training or rest day. Having the same schedule helps your body adjust and wake/sleep more easily. On rest days, I still wake up at 6 AM, but I play Xbox, do laundry, or even grocery shop. As a 30-year-old dude with a fiancee and 2 dogs, any time to myself is much appreciated!

Oh yeah, I'm a light sleeper too. White noise has helped immensely in masking noises from outside my condo. I prefer physical white noise, as opposed to a digital sound, so I bought this: http://www.amazon.com/Marpac-DOHM-DS-Natural-actual-Machine/dp/B000KUHFGM. I love it.

u/mollificent · 2 pointsr/sleep

The Marpac Dohm original white noise machine is the one I’m referring to. Here’s a link:Marpac is the best thing for sleep if you are sensitive to noise or live in a noisy place. I used to live above a night club and it was so helpful.

A lot of people use these apps that have digital loops of soothing sounds but for one thing the loop itself can be distracting. And the other thing is it functions in a different way.

The white noise of the Marpac tricks your brain into masking the obtrusive sounds, that’s why it can take a couple weeks to get the full effects- your brain needs to get used to it.

The sound is similar to a fan, but a much smaller device, more effective and you might not always want a fan blowing air around.

You might need quite a bit of sound paneling but you could start small and see how it goes. It’s amazing to me what even a small amount can do to dampen sound.

Good luck and I’m sorry about your noisy roommate situation!

I'm going to recommend that you get a white noise machine.

This is the one I have:

https://www.amazon.com/Marpac-Classic-White-Noise-Machine/dp/B000KUHFGM?th=1

It actually creates the white noise mechanically so it sounds "better" than electronic ones. When I have this thing turned on, I could sleep through pretty much anything. I live next to a road so there's often a lot traffic noise in the morning; ever since I got this thing I'm no longer woken by rush hour.

You won't hear neighbors, you won't hear traffic, and you won't hear Ultra.

I second the white noise maker suggestion. You can find these at Bed Bath and Beyond (or perhaps cheaper on Amazon). They're not much more than a little fan that you can plug in and you can control the frequency/loudness. They sound loud at first but both my wife and I love it. I recommend them highly.

This is what I use.

Aside from filing a noise complaint like some others suggested, have you considered getting a noise machine? I can't sleep without one anymore. Definitely helps to drown out outside noises. I've got this one:

u/agreywood · 2 pointsr/legaladvice

Since it looks like breaking the lease is not feasible, you may want to try a combination of ear plugs and a white noise machine. I work nights and my husband needs to be up at 6am, and this is how we manage the situation.

http://www.amazon.com/Marpac-Dohm-DS-Speed-Sound-Conditioner/dp/B000KUHFGM

u/LobbingLawBombs · 2 pointsr/daddit

This is the one I have. It's nice because it's moving actual air, so it doesn't have that "fake" sound to it.

u/beard-second · 2 pointsr/todayilearned

If you need white noise to sleep, you should try an analog noise machine (something with a fan) instead of something with a speaker like the Sleep Sheep. The difference it makes is incredible. I have trouble sleeping in a quiet room, so I use a Dohm, which works extremely well. It's expensive, but it's well-engineered and should last a long time.

u/greenchipmunk · 2 pointsr/breakingmom

We got one of these a few weeks ago. Amazon had them on sale. I like that it's very adjustable so you can customize the noise level.

u/masi_is_master · 2 pointsr/AskReddit

What you need is to get one of These.

I was in your situation until a few months ago when I invested on this little beauty. The way it works is to create the most sleep-inducing sound known to man. You would be surprised how much ambient sound factors in getting to sleep. Seriously, try it.

u/hahadontknowbutt · 2 pointsr/hearing

I was having the same problem as you. I use these, but the life hack that really got them to work for me, is I cut the bottom off (like a cm) and just use that.

I have short ear canals I guess so I couldn't get any ear plugs deep enough to stay? And using the thicker end makes a better seal. I did tend to wake up without them in my ears any more, but I think I was pulling them out in my sleep. Once I got to sleep I didn't need them as much though, and my noise maker helps to muffle the noises and not distract me from sleeping.

u/costellofolds · 2 pointsr/Random_Acts_Of_Amazon

Once when I worked for a soulless corporation, I cashed out my gifted stocks. In hindsight, I wish I'd kept them, particularly since they skyrocketed about four months after I cashed them out. That'd come in reeeeeeeeeal handy now. But still, I don't regret what I got with them:

  • a Giant city-cruisin' bike
  • actual luggage
  • a new pair of Birkenstocks
  • a metric crap ton of Just Coffee
  • a Sleepmate noise machine
  • donated to a couple charities near and dear to me
  • paid off part of my student loans

White noise machines are a blessing for anyone with tinnitus. I have this one. It makes a sort of whooshing sound, but you can modify the tone and volume to your liking. It's not exactly cheap, but for me it was totally worth it.

I live in a small apartment and can relate. Baby's room is our closet.

Diapers I choose cloth because it saves over 1,000 dollars a year. They have cloth diaper services that clean and drop off, you can buy used or just do disposible.

Toy library allows you to rent toys versus storing them and honestly my kid could care a less about toys till she was 5/6months

Library for books they just outgrow them and you can trade out frequently.

Bouncer is usefull for soothing and sitting upright for 20 mins after feedings which helps with spitup.

Pacifiers and bottles as every kid has a diffrent prefrence dont go ham until you see if you kid likes it. I had massive success for dr.brown bottles and pacifiers. Only had gas 3 times.

Bibs 2 silicone for when on real food (just wash with soap and water in sink). I recomment cloth bibs for formula or milk and drool as it adsorbs better. Get one with buttons all velcroa die within 2 or 3 washes.

I use ikea diah drying rack for all diahes no need to buy a bottle specific one.

I reccomend a rack for bottles mine is an under the counter and holds bottles, bibs and paper towel.

Swaddles 1 halo and 1 swaddle me one with the arms. Every baby is diffrent and some wake up if they get the arms out of the halo. Once you find on just get 2 so if spit up gets on it you have a back up.

Clothes. Skip pjs no need for them when they are in a swaddle.

Tried it, hated it. I'm very petite and skinny and I tried a juice fast for less than 2 whole days and had to stop. I was dizzy, couldn't function, was crazy tired, and more than once afraid I may pass out. My bosses wife just tried one and lost 14 pounds.... because whatever was in the drink made her vomit for two days straight. They are dangerous! And honestly, drinking THAT few calories for an extended period of time may lead to weight loss in the short-term but as soon as you go back to eating regularly you gain it all back quickly because your metabolism is all jacked from not eating enough.

White noise machine. You can get one on Amazon for about $20. You can also get a free app like Relax Melodies, but the speakers aren't quite as good and I find having the sound coming from my phone inconvenient at times.

Turn up the water setting loud enough and you won't hear any distant sounds like barking, horns or sirens, or really anything short of someone hammering on your front door. But you'll still hear your alarm because it's close to you.

The white noise will seem loud at first, but your brain filters it out after a few minutes so you don't even notice it. I live in a canyon with frequent insane car crashes that happen in the middle of the night and I don't even hear them anymore. It's a huge relief.

u/yupislyr · 2 pointsr/windsorontario

Missed it myself as we were over there for a show already, but we have no problem hearing a lot of their events all the way in South Walkerville. I'm glad you have such a great attitude about noise pollution though, I guess. Hah

Anyway, if you ever want a white noise machine instead of having to run actual fans, this is the best one I know of

It's kind of pricey for what it is, but the best part is it can get LOUD, so it really masks noise. Maybe not fireworks so much, but the vast majority of other stuff depending on how close you sleep to it. It has one setting that basically sounds like a regular box fan.

u/NeutronStarPasta · 2 pointsr/beyondthebump

We bought and really like this one. Has a USB plug so you can use AC with a wall adapter or an external battery. Doesn't have an internal battery though. It's truly continuous and doesn't loop. Lots of different white (brown, etc...) And fan types.

u/flurbinator · 2 pointsr/Parenting

We've gone through a number of white noise machines, and didn't really like the cheap electronic ones. The speakers sound scratchy, and proper white noise is kind of hissy to begin with. There's a mechanical kind that sounds great, but that particular one we chose started to get weird on the high setting (clicking, frictiony noise). By far our favorite is a $5 ipod docking station from goodwill, with an ancient ipod nano that we loaded with an 8 hour, custom white noise mp3 (chopped all the high end out). An old smart phone would be way easier, maybe with an external speaker, we just didn't have one laying around.

u/Litcritter10 · 2 pointsr/xxketo

Woman, get a white noise machine. It helps me so much! I have this one and I've used in every night since March 2015 (according to Amazon who just told me when I purchased it). I've been living in apartments for about 5 years now. One thing that bothers me that I still haven't been able to get over is when people stomp around late at night. My current apartment is 10 stories, and has it really bad. I swear, there's one person somewhere who's like a 400 pound vampire who doesn't believe in chairs.

I'm probably going to continue to live in apartments for the foreseeable future, because I already have enough student loan debt for a mortgage. So I wish I could get over this stomping issue.

I did buy a this white noise machine, but it doesn't really work at blocking out the bassy thuds that stomping produces. I feel like I need to buy a white noise machine with a subwoofer or something.

u/andreatjej · 2 pointsr/GetOutOfBed

I use this one. It's a little pricy, but totally worth it. I've used a fan, white noise apps, etc. and nothing compares to these "analog" sounds machines. I don't know what it is about them, maybe conditioning is a part of it. Read the reviews. The only "side effect" I can think of is that if I forget it when traveling or sleep over at a dude's house I can't sleep for the life of me and I just lay there in existential dread. Like I said, it's my best friend.

u/ahandsomecat · 2 pointsr/Showerthoughts

This is how psychiatrists prevent people in the waiting room from hearing conversations in their (the dr.'s) offices; place a white noise machine in the room where you want external noise to be eliminated (i.e. the sound wavelengths cancelled)(e.g. if you want silence in your room then put the white noise machine in your room, with you; if you want prevent guests from hearing bathroom noises while they're in the living room, then put the white noise machine in the living room (i.e. where you want to create a closed environment free from external sounds)

u/mjlp716 · 2 pointsr/puppy101

I live in an urban area on a loud street so I hear all sorts of noises when trying to sleep. A few months ago I got THIS prior to my current puppy and I sleep so much better and I've noticed (his cage is in my room) none of the noises wake him up either. So it might work for your pup as well without the radio sounds.

u/sharkamino · 2 pointsr/BudgetAudiophile

Not earbuds, but have you tried mechanical white noise machines? The Marpac Dohm Classic White Noise Sound Machine has an actual fan inside with adjustable vents so it makes a better full and low range sound than smartphone apps or electronic white noise machines with tiny speakers.

I’d highly recommend a “white noise sound machine” such as the Marpac Adjustable model.

Marpac

I’ve tried fans, apps, looping sound clips and YouTube videos but nothing has worked as well as my Marpac. Read though some of the 11k reviews and you’ll come to understand why it’s helped allot of folks.

In my case; I’m a light sleeper and it does a great job of masking outside noises which otherwise would have woken me up easily. I like being able to adjust the air vent ports to suit the tone I’m comfortable with and given that’s it’s an actual small fan spinning within a container, it sounds much more natural and soothing than some app.

Use a heavy blanket, make sure your room is a bit chilly and use a physical white noise machine to help you fall sleep and stay asleep.

I hope this helps

u/m0ro_ · 2 pointsr/Nootropics

I don't know why nobody has actually linked you to anything but I am here to the rescue!

This bad boy is what you need to get. Unlike just about every single other white noise machine, this one is basically just a spinning internal "fan" with adjustable cutouts that let you adjust tone. The white noise it makes is real and not output through a speaker. I've found it to do wonders.

There are reviews of issues but as far as I can see, most of them just have to do with the internals gettings dust and particles inside and eventually not working right. At that point, you can pop the sucker open and clean it out or just realize how much a good night's sleep is worth and buy a new one.

We bought one for inlaws and we've had ours for a little over a year with using it almost every night. I 100% notice a difference in my sleep when I forget to turn it on. There was a time when we used alexa for rain sounds or other noise and while it helped to fall asleep, there wasn't really a noticeable difference in rest and we eventually stopped using it.

I was honestly very skeptical when I bought it, but I'm glad I got one just to see.

If it broke today, I would instantly order a new one without hesitation.

u/Siltyn · 2 pointsr/homeowners

Contact your local Animal Control and ask about barking/noise laws in your area. I've filed several barking complaints over the years, usually when folks get a letter from the city they straighten their dog out. Also, if your neighbors are being loud, check local noise laws for that too and file complaints with the police. That generally takes care of loud asshole neighbors too.

Also look into getting a white noise machine. I sleep like a rock with mine:

https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00HD0ELFK/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_search_asin_title?ie=UTF8&psc=1

u/TheNonCompliant · 2 pointsr/childfree

Also a dedicated sound machine (this one is amazing), not your phone. Honestly, optimally two, even if only one has adjustable white noise and volume with the other being a box fan. The sound machine by your head, the other on the opposite side of the bed and possibly even nearer to your feet (depends on the room).

Using a phone is cool and it worked for me for awhile but it usually takes away from being able to have white noise and optional music and an alarm without either draining the battery or overcharging it all night.

u/aorolecall · 2 pointsr/relationship_advice

u/Hai_kitteh_mow · 2 pointsr/beyondthebump

OKAY so I went through this and was deemed the "mother shusher" lol. A few things that helped me:

-Make being quiet a GAME for older kid. I did this by "playing" ninjas. Who can be the quietest and sneakiest? I always win! You have to get better! (spoiler alert! He got better and is the best ninja in the house).

-INVEST IN A WHITE NOISE MACHINE IF YOU DON'T HAVE ONE. I spent $$$ on this one because it has various types of sounds and can be played LOUD. You have to have it louder than you think. It drowns out ALL NOISE I SWEAR IT. LO sleeps like a dream and even sort of pavlov'd him because I turn it on and he knows its sleep time.

-If possible keep older son on opposite ends of the house. The baby is upstairs with his white noise machine and older son is downstairs while baby is napping.

That’s sucks about your options of doctors, I’m sorry. You don’t always have to agree with your doctor’s advice for things that aren’t putting your kids health at risk so I would understand if you wanted to stick it out, but I really love my pediatrician and treasure having that relationship. I don’t like everyone at the practice and have gotten weird advice from nurses or other doctors during sick visits and it makes me incredibly uncomfortable. Honestly, rather than speak up in the moment I usually just don’t do what I disagree with. That’s definitely an anxiety thing on my part. But my friend didn’t ever like or trust her pediatrician, has gone through some minor medical issues with her kid, and now feels like she’s stuck with this practice she dislikes just because her kid is a year old. She worries a lot about their advice and it makes me sad for her because she’s worried a lot if they’re doing the right thing. With our doctor I feel like I know if somethings a real problem or not because she tells me if she’s actually concerned or if it’s no big deal.

Congratulations.

Though I'm not a parent myself, I work for a high end newborn photographer so I'll just give you tips on my observations.

  • Swaddle tight with stretchy materials and hold the arms down to the sides when swaddling

  • if mom is nursing, stay away from gassy vegetables and acidic foods as well. From our experience when the mom eats these things the baby is miserable the next day because of gas. We basically just recommend a boring bland diet. Only for the first few weeks though. After the first 3 or 4 weeks and then its usually ok. Every baby will be different so your mileage may vary. But from our experience 99% of the time we have cranky crying babies for the whole session is because mom had like spicy food or something else. Rule of thumb for us basically if the food has the potential to make your stomach uncomfortable sometimes then it might make baby uncomfortable as well

  • Get a yoga ball. trying to sooth baby, hold baby with head to your heart, sit on ball and start bouncing gently. Get yoga socks too if you have slippery floors.

  • diaper rash. Use huggies or honest brand. 9 out of 10 babies that come in with a rash are using pampers. Kirkland brand wipes from costco are great too. Our studio is stocked with huge packs of them.

  • Formulas. I'm not sure on the brands for this but don't go out buying huge amounts right away because some babies might not like them very much. Might make them gassy too so you may have to try a few brands before you land on the one that is right. There are also ones for sensitive stomachs ( more expensive though)

  • get a baby shusher or white noise, either this or this one, we use both in our studio.

  • get chux from amazon (basically look like puppy pads but are not scented or no chemicals) you'll probably seem them at the hospital. use them on your changing table, keep a few in your car. everywhere really so that where ever you are you can change baby an hopefully avoid soiling a bed/car/couch etc.
  • newborn size clothes is often too big for actual newborns
  • If you are getting photos taken 7-10 days is ideal. Most of the newborn photos you'll see are of 7-10 day old babies. Time will vary if preme or multiples. Don't wait several weeks and then still expect to get the same type of photos. at the very least try to book within 24 hours of giving birth though that may only apply to the photographer work for because most of our clients book well in advanced but there's always a few every now and then that call in trying to get in the same day and we have to behave ourselves when we explain that wont be possible.
  • Gripe water, buy it
  • Don't touch her stomach after she's given birth.
  • Get her a push present
  • have your go bag and car seat ready in the car even earlier than recommended. honestly not sure what's recommended but just do it as early as you can. a lot of our clients have been going early recently.

That's all I can think of for now. Good luck to you and don't worry nobody knows what they are doing the first time. Just by making this post looking for advice you will probably be more ready that many of the first time dads that come into our studio. Just enjoy your time together as much as possible those first few weeks and take lots of photos and videos even if its just on your phone. and back them up. babies grow so fast the first few weeks so they will never be that tiny again. Blink and its over. Oh and for the future, age 2 sucks but 3 should be good. you can usually start bribing them by 3. Again I want to reiterate that I myself and not a father (but I hope to be) so take all of this however you like. I've been working at this studio for almost a decade now (i'm 30) and these are just the things that I've seen and learned from all the parents that come in. Also, Asian babies are the best, have one of those if you can, they're usually prefect for their sessions...

Ah yeah I'm sure she'll be great there then! It may be a little noisy there still as the street to the right, Austurstræti, is a popular strip of bars & restaurants. And it's a popular way to walk over to the Laugavegur scene. We were there on a weeknight & heard some noise at 2 or 3 am, but I think it was fine once we closed the windows. You can probably request to be on the other side of the hotel/quiet room. This is also a great travel white noise machine.

u/alllthewebs · 2 pointsr/raisedbynarcissists

That's awful. I'm so sorry that's happening.

There are others who post on here about their Nparent(s) purposely being loud and making noise to keep them on edge and anxious.

It is probably on purpose, or it's some kid of subconscious or habitual thing he's gotten used to.

You can do few things to mitigate the sound if leaving the house isn't an option, but you're really going to want to make sure he isn't aware you're doing any of them, or he will probably start paying attention to when you're trying to block him out, and escalate accordingly.

•close your door (pretty obvious)

•get noise-canceling headphones, or normal ones that go all the way around your ears and listen to music (I think they make some for listening to music that are also noise-canceling, but they might be expensive)

•get a fan (a big box fan makes the best white noise imo) or a white noise machine

I hope some of that helps. Keep us updated.

Edit: clarity
Edit 2: small typos

u/lunalove11 · 2 pointsr/UCI

There are a couple different options in my opinion... A more confrontational approach would be to next time you hear the moaning, casually say something along the lines of, "Hey man.. I'm trying to sleep right now. Can you be quiet?" Any normal person would feel totally embarrassed and be careful to not moan. He probably thinks you are asleep and can't hear him.

OR a less confrontational approach would be to get one of those privacy tents which look a little dumb, but could offer you some nice privacy and a white noise machine to muffle out the noise. Here is a link to buy a a privacy tent and to buy a white noise machine here or just hook your phone up to a speaker and play white noise from youtube. That could also double as a confrontational approach because he might get the hint that you can hear his late night rub down sessions lol. Or just buy some cheap earplugs! The silicone ear plugs legit block out all noise.

I feel your pain and tried using the phone apps with limited success. Then I invested in one of these babies

https://www.amazon.com/LectroFan-Wireless-Sound-Machine-Bluetooth/dp/B01LBVLAFK

(I hope that link works, I bought mine through amazon.ca) it's tiny, easily packed and charges from a USB port. I've never used it as a bluetooth speaker but several of the "coded in" noises are perfect and despite the size it fills the hotel room with sound. Most rooms these days have a USB near the bed but the internal battery kept it going untethered for over 8hrs.

For the light sleepers here. I love good sleep and I have a whole list of sleep things. Have you tried a white noise machine? [This one](Marpac Dohm Basic White Noise Sound Machine https://www.amazon.com/dp/B073H3L4FN/) is worth every penny. Melatonin before bed helps, as does Sleepytime tea. I always brush my teeth right before bed because I'm convinced it sends a time to sleep signal to my brain. There's an app that can turn off the back button light on your phone, which was annoying as heck (I have a Samsung.) And there's an app called twilight that turns the backlight wayyyyy down on your phone so even if somebody texts you late it won't fry your eyes & wake you up. In addition to white noise I sometimes play super boring audiobooks. It's like being given permission to sleep in a work training. Good luck!

u/disco_rice · 2 pointsr/BabyBumps

We’ve used a Dohm since our kid was a newborn. He’s almost two now and it still goes on during naps and bedtimes. It’s great because it has a more “mechanical” whirring noise (think white noise on an airplane flight) and it isn’t fancy at all—just plug it in and choose low or high. No internet connection needed. It’s great at muffling any background noise going on in the house so we don’t have to tiptoe around when he’s sleeping.

u/ezranilla · 1 pointr/tinnitus

I like this one because you twist the top and the sides to adjust the frequency. It also has a louder vs quieter option. It fills the room really nicely, whereas an app is very concentrated noise. I'm with you on the nature sounds. This one is just straight noise, no options for nature or rain or anything. Idk about dryer noises, but I wonder if there is a way you can record that and play it as an ambient noise. Sometimes I just turn on my window unit air conditioning for the noise. I wonder if there is something that naturally makes a noise that would help you.

I know the one I linked is a lil expensive, but imho worth it. You could always try it out and return it if you don't like it. Best of luck!

u/questionsnanswers · 1 pointr/dbtselfhelp

You use DEARMAN to get something you want (you have an objective) DEAR is what you say (describe, Express using I statements, Assert, Reinforce (give to get) MAN is how you say it (stay Mindful, Appear Confident, Negotiate (if possible)

You use GIVE when preserving/keeping the relationship. (the relationship is important to you and you don't want to fudge it up)

FAST is about your self-respect OR ending the relationship. In this case, the relationship is not the priority, YOU are. For example, if someone is taking advantage of you and using you, you might use FAST.

You can also search the sidebar for Interpersonal Effectiveness Activities that deal with conflict, How to be assertive, etc.

-------------------

That all being said, you have a few options to deal with your neighbor. Hopefully, some of these might give you some ideas you can use that will be helpful.

First, before speaking to them directly, What noise is the dog making exactly? Is it barking? Or is it just moving around (paws on the floor type noise)? If it's not barking and it's just motion noise, I think you might just have to deal with it, or ask the neighbor to get some carpet if they have bare floors. You could also try recording the noise in your apartment to play for both the neighbor and the landlord to prove your point. (ie: here's how loud your dog is at 2am)

What does your lease say about animals? Are they allowed or does your neighbor have a dog that they shouldn't have? Does the lease mention anything about complaints regarding animals and how to address them? If the lease says nothing about animals, you might want to speak to your landlord and see if you can file a complaint through your management company regarding any kind of barking. If this is a long-term rental (condo) you could ask the management company about putting in some kind of sound dampening/insulation between the walls of your units. This is where you could play your recording for them to prove to them how loud it sounds in your apartment. If the dog is barking late at night chances are you are not the only person who is pissed off by it.

If the management company is 'hands off' you could try approaching the neighbor, or writing a letter to the neighbor (if you don't want to speak with them directly) It is possible they don't realize how loud the dog is being. They are just 'used' to it.

If they don't resolve the noise regarding the dog, you should then start filing complaints with city bylaw. If the dog is barking for hours at a time and it's not stopping, and you've attempted to speak to the landlord, and your neighbor and nothing is changing, call your city bylaw department. Here's an example from LA Animal Service regarding Nuisance Barking. Some places want you to contact your local animal shelter and some want you to contact bylaw. Call your city to find out who to report this to. Keep in mind though, if you do this after all the other steps, your neighbor will know that it was you that called to file a noise complaint and may make things difficult for you. (I had it happen with my neighbor who would get pissed drunk and sit out on his porch blaring music and screaming along for hours at a time)

Your other nonconfrontational options include, getting a white noise machine or using a regular fan (works exactly the same but isn't as compact.) You can also try noise-cancelling headphones or earplugs at night when you sleep.

Your last resort would be to wait until the lease is up or break your lease (again, check your lease agreement for penalties). You could also ask the management company to move you to a different apartment within the complex away from the dog person (but that wouldn't necessarily guarantee you peace from other neighbors.)

Best of luck in resolving your situation!

There are 2 types of white noise machines: Digital and analog.

YouTube or a white noise app on your phone would provide digital sounds, but are highly customizable to give you the sound you want (rain, train tracks, forest, etc.)

Analog devices like this one are basically just fans in a box. You can control the volume and pitch of the sound, but that's about it. They're simpler, but many people prefer them to digital sounds.

We have neighbors who live only a few feet away. They aren't there most of the year, but when they are, their parties go well into the night. The white noise machine works wonders.

I wonder also if your neighbor has some sort of new surround sound that is touching the wall, thus causing the reverberations?

Hope you get it sorted.

u/Saucermote · 1 pointr/ChronicPain

I've suffered with chronic insomnia for years, and have tried just about everything under the moon. I just quit the benzos I've been on for years for sleep (triazolam), they were working decently but I don't need them anymore. The topamax I'm taking for migraines and nerve pain is doing a good enough job now. Story out of the way.

Might I suggest investing in a simple fan based white noise machine and some cheap foam ear plugs (just grab a cheap pack from the closest drug store)? Between the two you'll not hear most background noise, but you should still be able to hear important loud noises. I sleep through just about everything now. It is one less distraction.

u/PwnyboyYman · 1 pointr/NoStupidQuestions

finally something I can comment on from experience!

I used a standard box fan for ten years before my SiL gifted us one of these lil beauties and we'll never go back. The fact is, it creates a noise more soothing than your standard box fan without air circulation...which if you're a person who doesn't dust every week (like me) it's a nice change to not have the contents of your home swirling around all night long... highly recommend it!

I would definitely ignore the hate... I took my 3 year old and 6 month old with us in November and everything was fine. Just prepare for a different Disney trip. You'll have more fun if you go in with a more relaxed attitude about your experience. If you go in planning on a non stop day sprinting from place to place, you're going to be miserable. We would go in when it opened, hop in a line, go to a fastpass, took turns with the 6 month old when there wasn't a ride for her, and found quiet / cool places for an after lunch stroller nap. We would leave the park each day around dinner time so we didn't push our luck.

We bring this with us everywhere we go which definitely helps when the youngest is tired and needs a break. Good luck!

NTA. This dude lives in an apartment building. It'd be one thing if you were throwing midnight parties or having extremely loud sex at 4 in the morning, but if you're just going about your business? What does he expect when he lives in an apartment building?

If it's worth it to you to stop the stress of him harassing you, you could offer to buy him a cheap white noise machine or something to block out the sound of... your existence. I'm not saying you owe him this, you absolutely don't. But $20 might make this problem go away. It'd mean letting him "get his way", but at the end of the day, worry about yourself. If $20 lets you stay in the apartment, not get harassed, and go about your life as normal? Might be worth it.

You should look into a sound machine that makes white noise (or rain). It's worked wonders for us and our kids. Amazon Link

I suggest the "rain" setting on this $20 machine.

Get a non-mechanical keyboard, always wear headphones, turn up your microphone and learn to whisper, lower fan speeds.

Another option is to buy a white noise machine. Slowly increase the volume over a span of a month or two to drown out the noise you make. Buy sound insulated headphones so you don't go insane from the white noise!

I'd just get one of those simple ones that aren't necessarily meant for kids, you definitely want to be able to plug it in so that you don't have the change the batteries if you're going to run it all night. I'd think this would be fine. Just make sure it's far enough away that he can't get to the cord.

I bought this white noise machine for my 9 month old, and I wish I had bought it much earlier, it lets him sleep through a lot of household noises, I hope it helps you.

Earlier, we would be scared to flush either toilet in the house cause he'd wake up.

Now the machine is so loud that I can take a bath in the adjacent bathroom and he sleeps thru it.

I also tried another one, which is nice but not as loud as the other one, and so not as effective:

I'm not giving a label to what we did/do. But I'll tell you about it. If we know that our little guy is tired but he is fussing/crying when being put down, we let him cry for a set amount of time. So right now that means about 10 minutes of general sporadic fussing/crying (the kind where you can tell they're so close to going to sleep but just haven't quite settled down enough) or 5 minutes of escalating crying. If he needs to be picked up it is always because he's hungry or just wants to eat.

We also make sure he gets a little bit jostled before being set back down. Just to ensure that he's continually keeping his self-soothing skills sharp. For us, that means unvelcroing and revelcroing the wings on his swaddler.

Also key: swaddled, dark, white noise (this is the shit)

u/SaoilsinnSuz · 1 pointr/beyondthebump

I seem to be the odd one out on this subreddit - but my boy was in his own crib in his own room the day we brought him home from the hospital. I was really nervous about it at first - but it was as simple as just doing it.

Our routine for any sleep is new diaper, put in sleep sack, cuddle/rock/bounce with mommy while mommy sings lullabye (The Lion Sleeps Tonight), and then down for bed. When he was really little, replace the sleep sack with swaddling, and occasionally I'd boob him to sleep (but I stopped doing that by 3 months old).

What we did to get a stretch at night was my husband did a dream feed at around 10-11 with a bottle (pumped milk). This bought me an extra hour or two. If I went to sleep at 9, I could get until 12 or 1 without issue most nights from the time he was 6 or 7 weeks old or so, and then it just got longer and longer. The hubs was staying up until then anyway.

Edit: white noise machine!!! This one is pricey, but it is SO WORTH IT. Get it.

Okay, this is expensive but it seriously SAVED MY LIFE when living in an apartment with roommates (also a college student). It seems loud at first but you don't notice it after a few minutes. I've actually accidently left mine running for days sometimes, it's just that good of white noise. If your main problem is studying, I highly recommend it. I would say a fan that is loud enough, usually the square floor fans (you can point it toward a wall so it doesn't hit you, otherwise you may get chilly). I usually keep mine on the lowest setting, but sometimes have to bump it up to medium if neighbors are playing music. I really find that the cheaper, square, medium'ish sized ones work the best. The more expensive ones try to actually be quiet, which is not what I want.

Also, i would get one of these bad boys: http://www.amazon.com/Marpac-SleepMate-980A-Electro-Mechanical-Conditioner/dp/B000KUHFGM/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1303068647&sr=8-1

I have found that other noise machines (rain noises, etc) just have a loop back that I can pick up on and it actually keeps me up even more because I am following the loop back. The white noise machine above has no such thing, I love them.

I have their travel one because I am on the road for work 3 weeks out of a month. Works great. If I was you, I'd use both. Put the fan by the window, on the right setting. Put the white noise machine on your dresser, next to you.

The secondary glazing sounds great, and if I asked my landlord to do this he would laugh and laugh and laugh and laugh, then hang up on me. I feel your pain, man. I hate noise while i'm trying to sleep. But what I have said above has worked in some pretty shitty situations before.

I need that even buffer of noise to sleep. In the summer, the AC in the window does the trick, but in the winter, all I can hear are my upstairs neighbor's footsteps and the delivery trucks at the convenience store next door. u/dzogmudra · 1 pointr/Meditation

If you need to block out noise, I recommend using good ear muffs such as the 3M Peltor X-Series. If that is insufficient, use earplugs underneath. I've also combined those with a good white noise generator like the Marpac Dohm. Noise-defense, in-depth.

Alternatively, if you have a lot of money to spend, you could get the Bose QC 35 II noise-cancelling headphones; however, they probably won't prove more effective than ear muffs over earplugs, just more comfortable.

If you can acclimatize yourself to ambient sound through meditation, even better. However, if noise countermeasures make the difference between meditating and not meditating, better to use them. This is just a more modern version of traditional Buddhist advice to find a quiet, secluded place to meditate - at least at the start.

u/tuba_man · 1 pointr/misophonia

If you're in the US, it may be worth calling my audiologist. They've got a lot of connections with other misophonia practitioners and therapists. They might be able to direct you to someone local.

I'd also recommend a white noise machine for quiet areas, meal times, wherever the situation's worst. (That and make sure she knows she can leave triggering situations)

Based on my own experience and what my audiologist has found, please don't have your daughter cover up sounds entirely (like ear plugs or super loud white noise), just cover up only enough to take the edge off. As much as it sucks and as much as you want to retreat from it in the moment, covering up entirely tends to make misophonia worse over time as the brain re-trains itself to hear through the noise)

I agree that if you are used to the air handler, that may be a different story, but for people not used to forced air heat (like guests) the on off of the air handler is not subltle at all.

Just say you like to sleep with a fan on and use a desk fan. Box fans actually move air more quietly than a smaller fan, so for this purpose a smallish desk fan is probably best.

u/charros · 1 pointr/AdviceAnimals
u/eliazar · 1 pointr/childfree

toomuchnoiseabove, I so feel your pain, very similar situation here. Noisy families are a socially sanctioned source of noise (a sanction which the childfree movement is only in its early stages of overturning) so there's probably little you can do directly about it other than moving.

What has worked for me is indirect measures: tech, a minor architectural change (closing the window out to the common area with soundproofing), and mental training. The tech has been some really kick ass headphones (a great investment anyway just for the awesome music quality), putting HD white noise videos like this fountain on my TV, this sound conditioner (it's an adjustable white noise like that of an electric fan that gives you something to focus on and ignore the rest), and finally good quality ear plugs as a last resort (I've only used them once or twice, but just knowing that I have them available eases me).

Anyway, you don't have to feel powerless, you can tweak your environment and gear up! Feeling yourself in control is half the battle. The other half is about making mental peace with noise you just can't control, letting yourself get naturally used to it, distracting yourself when it comes, letting go of anger, calming yourself with putting things in perspective... I know, it's difficult and you may not want to hear this when what you want to do is vent and act, but it has been the other half of the answer for me :) Good luck!

(We have two of these (It's almost identical to the one posted by /u/smittypants below, just slightly different sounds). We will eventually get a 3rd. When the big kids were little, and now for the baby, we have a super old 13" TV that plays static which works well enough.

We did our first trip when my son was 8 months old. Full disclosure: it was super stressful. I vented online that I was on vacation but it did not feel like a vacation at all. It took an older mom friend to tell me “That’s because you are on a family trip, not a vacation.” That stuck with me a lot and helped shift my perspective. In hindsight, he probably did really well given the circumstances, but it was much harder for me (more night wake-ups, I’d nurse him to get him to go back to sleep, which meant another night feeding I had to work to eliminate once we got home. However, right now we’re on a trip with our now 20-month-old and it’s going amazingly.

Tips: we bought a portable sound machine this one I think, and some travel blackout curtains, these ones. That’s helped mimic the sleeping conditions he has at home, which has helped a ton. For us, that also means bringing a sheet from home and books and keeping the bedtime routine as close to home as possible. We’ve been pretty rigid with our routines at home for so long that I honestly think that’s why this trip is going well and it’s allowed us some flexibility in a weird way.

Make a couple stops on the drive. Aside from sitting in the backseat, there is not much you can do to keep him from falling asleep. Maybe plan the stops for when his normal “wake” times would be and hopefully that can help have the sleep be during his normal “nap” times. I know they aren’t always recommended, but I like having a backseat mirror to have a rough idea of awake/sleep time. You can also bring some small, soft toys to introduce and periodic points during the drive (with the disclaimer that, like the mirror and anything else loose in your car, there is the risk of them being projectiles in the event of a crash).

It’s also a positive sleep cue. This is the one I use.

Right now I'm just using the Simply Noise app on either my phone or iPad, set to pink noise (supposedly better for sleep) and fairly loud (80-90% of full volume on the iPad). I have charging cords near both the bassinet and in the nursery so it works well in either space and didn't cost me anything. We will likely get an actual white noise machine down the line; Moms On Call recommends this one (and it's also the model my therapist uses in the waiting area): http://www.amazon.com/HoMedics-SS-2000G-Relaxation-Machine-Nature/dp/B00A2JBMRE/

I like that it can be powered by battery or adapter, so if we travel we could easily take it with us.

I used to have a lot of trouble sleeping and going about one night a week without any sleep wasn't unusual, especially when I was stressed. The four things that helped me the most were:

  1. This wonderful device
  2. Writing or reading before bed
  3. Getting into a normal routine with school and work
  4. Sleeping with a SO

This is the one we use now, it's been great. We use the white noise for over night and the rain sound for nap times. It works wonders for us.

We got one as a gift, it was munchkin brand and had a little projector. We thought it was great. After 6 months it capped out so we bought another at Walmart, that one died that same night. So we exchanged it for another of the same kind and the new one died 3 days later.. so we gave up on that one

This is the one I use. Comes with the original white noise, but also has others such as ocean, rain, thunderstorm, brook, and night time (crickets and such sounds).

It works really well if you live with roomates/family for sleep too. My mom got me hooked. Not only do i seem to sleep better, it blocks out noises from other parts of the house such as roomates cooking/listening to music/talking. Definitely worth the 20 bucks

Here are mine:

  • Secure Beginnings Crib Mattress - a totally breathable crib mattress. You can take the "sleep surface" off and throw it in the washing machine when needed. I surprisingly don't do it that often. The mesh fabric and space under it helps in temperature regulation and air exchange. Basically, helped me as a new mom not worry about suffocation. I ended up going wild and getting two sleep surfaces per mattress. I got one set in the regular size and a mini crib for our room.
  • LED Touch Light - these suckers are rechargeable and hold their charge a long time. They're super portable. What I like best is that you can turn them suuuuper dim, which is great for middle of the night wake ups and diaper changes. We have one hanging from our headboard and one hanging above the changing table. And then another around the house. There are tons of sellers of this type of product and they're quite inexpensive.
  • Wet Bag - a reusable and washable bag to stash wet/dirty stuff. An essential for cloth diaperers, but also great for pooped on clothes, bathing suits, etc.
  • Fischer-Price Ultra-Lite Day and Night Play Yard - this is a smaller and less expensive version of a traditional pack and play. We kept it in the living room and baby spent a lot of time there as a newborn.
  • Gripe Water Lots of gripe water. Good for gas, sometimes hiccups, and gentle relief for stomach upset. Also helps some newborns poop.
  • Grovia Magic Stick Diaper Balm - made for cloth diapers, but would work for sposies. A barrier "cream" on a stick, so you don't have to get your fingers gross. Smells amazing - I literally sniff the stick every time we use it.
  • Freemies - great for hands-free pumping, especially in the car or at work. Fits inside the shirt. Can be hit or miss on if it works for individuals, but it works GREAT for my boobs. Regular flanges hurt me and didn't yield good output, but Freemies agreed with my body wonderfully.
  • Spectra Pump I have nothing but good things to say about the Spectra pump. I have the S1 (battery operated), S2 (plugs in), and the S9 (battery operated, but not as fancy as S1). I haven't had any issues with my pumps, but others have had great customer service experiences. It's a "closed" system, which means it's impossible for milk to get into the pump on accident. This is a good thing.
  • Kiinde Storage Bags - these breastmilk storage bags are more expensive, but highly durable. I love the twist top - much easier to use then a zipper top. We used the whole bottle system from 0-6 months. At six months, he realized he could take the nipple off the bottle and we switched to Como Tomo bottles. But for those months, it was SO NICE to just send the bags to daycare and wash only the nipples (the shells stayed at daycare).
  • Lillebaby Complete Airflow Baby Carrier - while baby carrier preferences will vary widely by body type and personal preferences, I love my Lillebaby most. It doesn't require any special insert for newborns and the lumbar support was awesome. The airflow version was great, as I live in a very hot state.
  • Lectrofan Sound Machine - you may be wondering why this is $45 and other sound machines are $20. Because it is amazing, that is why. Seriously 100% amazing.

    Hope this helps somebody!

Edit: added a few more after the Spectra.

So, I just heard this white noise machine in an office waiting room and honestly it was amazing.

If you want one that helps for sleep, you actually probably want Brown Noise. It has lower frequencies than white noise, and I think there are studies that those lower frequencies genuinely help with sleep.

The link I posted has a great, deep, brown noise setting that makes you feel like you're on a private jet over a tropical ocean and have just taken your first Valium.

Important: do no confuse with the brown note.

u/vggeek · 1 pointr/buildapcsales

Like the flexibility with many different white noises (the names are funny, I'm personally looking forward to cinnamon noise), and fan noises.

The same brand has one specifically for infants, which can be controlled with an app and has a night-light. It's an extra $20, which doesn't seem worth it to me, but letting you know.

There are several options in the $20 range instead (the one I linked to is $50), if you don't care about the different sound options. You're on your own however in picking between them haha

why would your bf be opposed to good white noise?
oh, and don't go with the half price cheaper alternative... I did and then had to buy this because it's not loud.

u/Slapbox · 1 pointr/Nootropics

I've actually read (though not sure if true) that more melatonin will actually worsen the situation.

The ideal dose is 0.5 to 1.0mg as I understand it.

MUCH more important though, darkness. It should be BLACK where he sleeps.

For 2-3 hours before trying to go to bed he should avoid all lights unless they're a very warm color. Blue light will affect his circadian rhythm. This is the case even in many blind people.

Key points:

  • Black room
  • Background noise. (Fan or Lectrofan)
  • Cool temperature
  • No white or blue light within several hours of sleep (To make screens redder, check out Lux for Android and Flux for PC)
  • Philips Hue light bulbs (These are mighty pricey, but for sleep, oh god. Controlling the color of the lights you surround yourself with will do a tremendous amount for keeping your circadian rhythm in check. I have gotten so much use out of these it's unbelievable.)
u/DCSkarsgard · 1 pointr/fixit

Perhaps counterintuitive, but a whitenoise device may be helpful if you can’t block it. I have several and have walked out of rooms where one was on only to discover the neighbor is outside with their chainsaw or a car with it’s bass thumping is parked out front. I highly recommend the LectroFan, they make an even smaller version that is $20 cheaper.

As someone with two dogs and a cat in a small place, I understand where you're coming from. I am sensitive to noise, especially at night.

I purchased a LectroFan noise machine to use at night, but you could also use it during the day. There are multiple sounds to choose from and the volume is adjustable.

Purchase a few rugs for the floors to help minimize the noise from the nails. You could also look into the placement of her water dish. When my pets noisily clean themselves next to me, I make a "tsh-tsh" sound and they'll either stop or move to another area to continue.

You should really look at your own health situation and speak to a doctor/therapist about this. I know when I'm experiencing strong emotions or anxiety, the sound sensitivity is more present and frustrating. It seems like you have been struggling lately and it's okay to experience frustration, but you have to remind yourself that your pet isn't doing this on purpose and you can't take out your frustration on her.

I hope things get better for you.

u/chrisjm · 1 pointr/Dogtraining

The Sleep Easy Sound Conditioner, though I'm sure there are better options out there.

Because it's essentially an enclosed fan, it took a while for my dog to get comfortable with it (he was afraid of the central air and other fan noises for some reason, but has gotten much better). I leave it on most of the day to try and avoid associated it with the anxiety of the crate. Now that he's used to it, it works really well.

Its already a thing, they are called white noise machines. I have one in my bedroom to help me sleep. My office also has a couple on the sales floor to help drown out all the background noise of other people on the phone. There are also apps you can download for white noise that does the same thing. It generally just sounds like a fan running.

I recommend a combination of white noise and foam ear plugs. You will have to experiment with a combination that will work best for you. Sometimes, ear plugs alone will block out high pitched noise, but allow through the thumps and bumps. You'll then get thumps and bumps in isolation, which could be more stressful.

For white noise, I really like mechanical noise makers. They run continuously, won't drain your phone battery, and can be made to vary by fine gradations till you get the sound frequency spectrum that best handles the noise you're trying to cover up.

I've been looking into this for myself recently because I tend to play loud games at my FLGS and I'd like to fix it so that I don't bother the euro gamers nearby.

I have no experience doing this myself but I'm seriously considering buying a white noise machine to muffle alot of the sounds just like I've seen it done in many offices I've worked in in the past. While I have no experience with this device in particular it has great ratings and I remember the awkward moments when these machines did not work in offices and you can suddenly hear everything that was going on.

I had a type of tinnitus that was two tones alternating irregularly. Very distracting. i used to crank up the stereo when I was commuting. Not sure if that was the cause but it calmed down when I got more responsible with the volume. I did use a white noise machine and it helped when the problem was severe.
