Oh man. Brace yourselves, I am a total Amazon junkie. (Note: These may not all be BIFL, but I'm responding to the OP in specific.)

  • $9 butter keeper. (I bought a slightly different one that's no longer available, but it's the same basic design.) Keeping butter that isn't for cooking or baking in the fridge is for chumps. Mine is always perfectly spreadable room temperature while staying fresh for weeks... sometimes months.

  • $9 TV antenna. I didn't own a TV until a few years ago, and it didn't have a built-in antenna. I don't watch much broadcast TV, so I grabbed the cheapest one I could find. Case in point for why digital is better than analog, this one picks up every digital channel perfectly.

  • $13 shoe rack (now $18). Over the past year of living in this flat, I'd developed a bad tendency of kicking my shoes off at the bottom of the stairs just inside the front door. This looked like a cheap piece of shit, but I figured for the price I couldn't go wrong. Now almost every single pair of shoes I own is in one spot where it's easy to grab—and, more importantly, everything's out of the way of people coming in and out of the house.

  • $14 jug of earplugs (50 pair). Essential for sleeping with the window open in loud neighborhoods, sharing rooms with snoring friends on a trip, or sharing beds with snoring dudes or gals you're sleeping with. These were also my go-to earplugs for shows until I got a pair that's better for listening to music.

  • $22 electric kettle. The coffeemaker in our office puts out water that isn't nearly hot enough for a proper cuppa, and I got sick of microwaving it to boiling a mug's worth at a time. No bells and whistles, but it's performed perfectly since day one, with no breaking-in period like you get with kettles that have plastic parts in contact with the water.

  • $32 32'/10m HDMI cable. Ran it between the computer in my bedroom and the TV in my living room, allowing me to watch all kinds of streaming TV and downloaded videos with friends in a spot more comfortable than standing in front of my desk.

  • Slightly over the $50 limit, but $53 space heater. My best friend and roommate is one of those dudes who's built like a furnace, and our place uses radiators for heat. We had a few days of him sweating his ass off even with the thermostat set to 68, before I realized that we could just turn it way the hell down, and I could heat my own bedroom separately. This sucker dumps out a ton of heat, with a slew of features to sweeten the deal (my favorite being the remote control).

  • Another that's slightly over, but $55 garment steamer. Collapses small enough to fit pretty much anywhere I've ever needed to store it, puts out steam within maybe 30 seconds of turning it on, and with a full tank has enough water to steam as many items as I've ever needed to do in a row. I haven't touched my iron once since I bought this thing, and my only regret is not buying one as soon as I started college over a decade ago.

And, saving the best for last:

  • $43 heated footrest. Hands-down, this is one of the best things I've ever bought in my life. I was looking for an unobtrusive, unobnoxious way to help myself stay warm in the office, which tends to be chillier than my taste year-round. When I opened it up, I was skeptical, since it looked like a cheap injection-molded piece of shit. Now, I'm pretty sure I'd rescue it from a fire before my mother. I don't want to imagine ever trying to get through another winter without it.

    ----------

EDIT: As requested by /u/Mogrix, I posted List Part II: Electric Boogaloo, with more items from my Amazon history.

If you buy your electricity from IGS (eg you signed up over the mail or from one of those door-to-door salespeople), you'll see some distribution charges from AEP and then the charge for the actual energy from IGS. Definitely call IGS if you think there's a problem or you didn't mean to sign up with them. They don't have a cancellation fee, so you can stop using them whenever you want. Also check the price-to-compare on your bill. It's below the due date. If you're being charged less per KWH than the price-to-compare, you're (theoretically) saving money over buying from AEP.

The energy charge will tell you how many KWH you used in the last billing cycle, and you can use your previous bills to tell if you're using more energy than normal. The AEP website also has a page with a graph showing you how much energy you've used per month over the past couple years. It's at the bottom of the account summary page, just click "more usage info." Hopefully that will help you find an explanation, because that's a pretty big bill even if you have all-electric heat.

If you're using one of those small electric heaters a bunch, that will definitely drive your bill up since those things are like 1500 watts. If you're heating a bedroom or something, try a radiator heater. They're a little more efficient and the heat tends to be less dry.

I got an old fridge on Craigslist for $25 that I thought was a small personal fridge but turned out to be about 6 cubic feet (perfect for hanging). I’m not sure of the brand actually (maybe Kenmore). So far I’ve done a Bresaola and a Copa, both have turned out great!

I bought one of these for under my desk, it works brilliantly and if I'm going to be sitting for a long time, I'll slip my shoes off and it works even better!

u/tuctrohs · 4 pointsr/HomeImprovement

Do you want to uniformly heat the whole room, or spot heat? If you want to spot heat, infrared is a good choice. If you want to heat the whole room, it doesn't matter much what you get, unless you care about noise, speed of response, etc. The reason you don't notice the Delonghi much is probably either that it's heat is spread around uniformly and so there's not much to notice, or that you are trying to see how much difference it makes after a few minutes, whereas in practice it takes more time to really warm up.

If you decide on IR, note that the one you linked has an IR element, but also a fan. So it makes noise, and distributes some fraction of the heat more widely by convection. To maximize the radiant heat--to better be able to feel it on your skin, for example, you would be better off choosing one that doesn't use a fan and is as close as possible to all IR. For example, this one That has the same heat output as the Dr. IR one you linked to.

Get one of these quartz heaters. They use infrared to heat objects (like your body) instead of the air. (Same unit is also sold at Walmart, Target, or Ace Hardware under various brand names (Honeywell), but they all look the same.) Use these in our bedrooms in a 1200 sq foot house and haven't turned on the heat (in Eastern North Carolina) in 5 years.

The warmth is instant, electricity use is much lower, and cats love them.

Short term fix - Vornado heater - they will do a great job for a large room or couple of small rooms. Also available at Bed Bath and Beyond in SoMa.

Not that you should have to deal with this, but if you're needing a fix today, here you go.

oh, i'd love to have towel warmer! height of luxury. very popular in the UK. makes your towels toasty warm for when you're ready to use them. in your case, it will remove the damp from the twoels after you use them.

i use one that has a timer/automatic shut off. yeah, in the winter i'll use it in the bathroom to make it warm in there. but I will also stick it in the shower stall to make it bone dry. i also an anti-mold spray in the shower.

i have this space heater, which i see has gone up 50% in price since I bought it. if it gets knocked over, it shuts off, if it overheats it shuts off. nice. i move it around the house when i need a little boost; it's a little powerhouse.

Not answering your questions but I have a 2 car garage that is insulated and dry walled. I went simple and got a 6k watt electric heater. Wired it up and good to go. It does a good job. You could wire it to a thermostat. At the lowest setting on the dial to it to turn automatically on, it keeps it at 40ish degrees. If I run it on high for an hour or so it get the space to 65 degrees in about an hour. Even in in the dead of PA winters I don't put the temp dial higher than half way.

I don't have natural gas and didn't want to deal with big propane tanks. No regrets.

Nah, you should only be using a radiant heater. Hot air blowing anywhere NEAR your plants is gonna be really bad. Place it in the same room if it's a tent or if it's a grow room, place it pretty close to your grow room. But make sure it is radiant!

Something like this would be perfect

What kind of gas heater? Are we talking about the older version of this? https://www.amazon.com/Mr-Heater-Flame-Natural-MHVFB30NGT/dp/B01DPZ56OG

The older version I've seen is brown and you can see the pilot light at the bottom (why yes, yes I was the kid who went around blowing them out like it was my birthday). I'm not sure those have to be vented.

And buy them some new carbon and smoke detectors. I bet the ones they have are super old.

u/itsjustchad · 2 pointsr/OffGridCabins

Problem you will run into is that it will need a pilot light or electric start, I don't know of any units super small ones but this one is about the smallest I could find that has a thermostat

u/razzertto · 2 pointsr/InfertilityBabies

They have these electric space heaters that have tip-over switches. They're actually really efficient at heating small spaces. I used one in my bedroom a few times when we had 'winter' in Florida but the place I was living didn't have heat.

Something like this.

u/_ImagineThat_ · 2 pointsr/HomeImprovement

I have one similar to this.
It works nicely and heats line of sight, no fan. The housing does get warm because there is a grate in front of the quartz, and so it does heat indirectly a bit that way.

u/Fenn2010 · 2 pointsr/HomeImprovement

Exactly. Thankfully I could use the smart plugs elsewhere, so it wasn't a lost purchase, but you are going to have some difficulty finding a modern electric heater that doesn't require you to physically turn it on. Its one of the many safety features on these things. That being said, when I clicked on your amazon link, another suggested item popped up for me: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07FFZRRB2/ref=dp_cerb_2 . That one would most likely work.

Still, space heaters are very expensive to run. Your electric bill will go up significantly if you are using this every day for a few hours. Do you have central heat in your house? Do you experience extreme cold winters? It may be worth it to look into getting a heat pump. It would heat a much larger area at a lower cost and there are many incentives and rebates to look into that significantly lower the cost of installation. And in the summer, you'd have AC too.

u/AlexTakeTwo · 2 pointsr/homeautomation

I'm doing this (and more) using a Vornado Whole Room heater plus a SmartThings sensor and Smart outlet. The Vornado Whole Room (and Personal, if you want smaller) heater has a manual switch so it will come back to its setting when power is restored, unlike some heaters that are digital. It also has multiple power settings at 750/1125/1500W, I leave mine at 1125 which is compatible with the ratings on the SmartThings power plug.

So, I plug the Vornado into the Smart outlet, then I set an automation that if the sensor temperature gets below a certain point, it turns the outlet on, which powers up the Vornado heater. I also set mine to only be on for a certain length of time, in my case an hour, after powering up. You could use a specific time instead of a temperature. For a small bathroom, you might be able to use the smaller Vornado Personal Heater instead of the larger whole room heater. Note, there are some Vornado heaters which are digital controls and not suited to running off smart plugs, but these work.

u/sleepytime03 · 2 pointsr/Homebrewing

I use a small space heater with a fan. You can get them anywhere, and they are extremely efficient at maintaining temperatures. I would advise one with a fan, as it moves the air around the fridge, and your controller will notice the temp change sooner

Edit, try this one

u/JATTI__ · 1 pointr/GlobalOffensive

To confirm few questions. Yes its 50W and it's mains powered (120V or 230V). And yes it definitely has some gamer tax. For example Optimus H-5511 is a 800W infrared heater for $30. https://www.amazon.com/Optimus-H-5511-Infrared-Quartz-Radiant/dp/B00EOSNGPA/

heat+ac/water/electric is a flat fee covered in my rent so it's not a huge concern for me, but I've only been here since the beginning of the month so I'll have to play it by ear.

That being said, this seems to have good reviews, and someone broke down how much it cost to heat a 14'x12' room to 70 degrees and it came to 26 cents a day according to said reviewer. Can't personally vouch, but might be worth checking out.

You could also try bubble wrap on the windows it's an insulation technique often used for greenhouses in the winter, and you'll get hours of entertainment if you're the easily amused type.

Your landlord won't install a window unit with heat but will, apparently, allow you to install gas radiators? Weird.

If you're going to spend your own money on something for the apartment, why not just go buy the window unit that you want instead?

At least that way you at least have the chance of taking it with you when you move and it's easier to install.

Oh and btw, I second the guy that mentioned electric radiators (like this one). Those things are beasts and will turn a large room into a sauna.

A little bit at a time.

Figure out what you want to be able to do, then pick a set of steps between where you are now, and that goal. Work on the *first* step--maybe it's just having sex with *outside* the covers (get a little space heater like this https://www.amazon.com/Pro-Breeze-Operating-Adjustable-Thermostat/dp/B07FFZRRB2/ for your room--we use one in the winter, we just turn it off when done). Maybe the next step is just having sex outside the covers with a single lamp on--not bright, but enough to see. Do each of the steps until you're comfortable with it. Then eventually you'll get where you want to be.

u/AUfan82 · 1 pointr/boston

I moved up from the south 2 years ago and had the same questions for /r/boston

In typical fashion.......they did the same thing they are doing to you. Laughing, and being dicks instead of trying to help.

My place was old, the heaters were not working, and their were leaking windows everywhere. I bought this

Caulking Cord

and

window kit

and

Heater

I very legally could have gone to the housing authority and reported my landlord for the lack of adequate heating (and broken radiators) but decided that this stuff worked just fine. First winter I couldn't get the house above 62, and some rooms I am sure were much colder. The electric and gas bill was insane.

Second year we just don't even bother using the radiators at all, we use the space heater, a heating blanket, and sealed all the windows and doors (balcony) with that caulk. The house was still cold, but we were warm. This seems to be a common tactic up here, heat yourself not the house.

I also looked into buying one of these bed heater, but I don't want to sweat in the middle of the night and the bedroom is pretty easy to heat with that space heater.

Good luck. Also, most people up here can be dicks when it comes to heating/cold complaints. Just sit back and laugh at what these people call a severe thunderstorm, most of them would shit their pants if they ever experienced a regular summer storm in the south.

If you want something that provides real heat it's going to have the be a high power device, the fan you posted is super gimmicky and isn't going to do crap. You want a heater that requires a separate 30-50A 240V circuit. Something like this

those are all good ideas. 62-74 should be growing fine though. are your pots directly on the floor? you may want to raise them, it'll warm them up a bit. i'd recommend slowing your fans like you did, and maybe a slim radiator in the one that needs more heat like this one

or use your bud heater on a thermostat controller.

1 out of the 4 lights had the power connector not soldered. I fixed it myself but you should be able to return it if this happens to you

If you keep the area around it clear of objects and don't plug it into a power strip, you should be okay. We've had a couple of these Vornados for years and they do a great job.
