Don't feel bad, my mom got me (6'3) a set of kitchen serving utensils from Linen's and Things' liquidation that turned out to be for little kids learning to cook. I had just moved out on my own and was pretty broke, so I cooked with the tiny utensils for a couple years. My friends always made fun of my tiny wooden spoons and spatulas.

TOTALLY agree!! and an 8 year old isn't too young. I was FAR younger than that when I would help my mom cook. She would give me simple tasks - measure something out with a measuring spoon, layer lasagna noodles into the pan, mix up the burger with egg & veggies for a meatloaf (with my hands!! WOOO!!), etc.

I am not only forever grateful to my mom for integrating cooking into my life skills, I have some fantastic memories of spending time in the kitchen with my mom & little brother.

OP, share time in the kitchen with your daughter! Teach her how to read a cookbook. Better yet, get a cookbook for kids and her own kitchen tools like these.

> Rubber spatula

Agreed. And don't get one of those silicon-topped spatulas that get food inside them, get the full-molded heat-proof silicon jobs. My most-used kitchen tool is little lime green silicon spatula.

u/poeticdisaster · 8 pointsr/Cooking

This. Also, here is an example of an excellent icing spatula :) Anything that is shaped similar will work though :)

u/ADrunkChef · 5 pointsr/KitchenConfidential

These sizes are basically my go to. I prefer wooden handles, and the drainage holes in the mid size. They're super awesome if you're cooking eggs on the flat top.

u/chux4w · 5 pointsr/TheDickShow

u/DickMasterson. Your spatuler sucks. If you use some old fashioned solid plastic spatuler it's going to rip that egg up. Upgrade, duuuude. Get a silicone spatuler, as flat as possible because some have big old bumps where the internal metal skeleton pokes through, and slide that paper-thin edge under the egg.

Also, get yourself a one egg wonder frying pan. It'll keep the egg together and build it up thicker, less susceptible to breakage. With the small pan and bendy flipper I haven't broken a fried egg in years.

u/bourbonbadger · 4 pointsr/LifeProTips

You could also throw in my favorite spatula. :)

My favorite is are silicone spatulas like these ones! They are flexible and the material is 'soft' texture-wise. Lots of options for different sensations!

I know you said no to utensils, but I think these are possible exceptions:

Microplane grater - Best grater ever. Amazing for garlic, ginger, hard spices, cheese, citrus zest, chocolate shavings, etc. etc. I have one, and would be happy to have another just because they're so useful.

Victorinox tomato/steak/utility knife - This knife is marketed in three different ways because they're just so damn handy. I'd just go for whichever is cheapest, they're all the same. Incredible knife for little jobs that always seems supernaturally sharp. Cuts cleanly through even the ripest tomatoes, sails through thick-skinned limes, dices ginger like no other, slices garlic paper-thin, neat and tidy (and un-squished) sushi rolls, bagels, etc. etc. I have 3 and would be happy to have another. I've given plenty of these as gifts and they're always appreciated.

Silicone spatula/spoonula - Pretty much every other cooking utensil has grown dusty and unused since I got my silicone spoonula. More heat-resistant than plastic or wooden alternatives, so nothing bad happens when you leave it resting on the pan. Insanely easy to clean. Amazing for getting every last bit of sauce/icing/batter/etc. Best thing ever for cooking omelets or scrambled eggs. I wash mine immediately after use every time because I know I'll be using it again soon. I would happily replace every wooden spoon and plastic spatula in my kitchen with one of these. Then I'd have 6, and I would be very happy.

SilPats. Best thing to put on your baking sheet, ever. Also provides a great work-surface for sticky doughs/batters, melted chocolate, caramel, etc. You don't really need multiples of these I suppose, but I certainly wouldn't complain.

u/sponge_welder · 3 pointsr/LifeProTips

The link didn't work for me, so here's a fixed one

Also, I totally agree. My mom got me these StarPack spatulas last year. They're great for working with sticky dough, and the small spatulas are way more useful than I expected

This kind of spatula (please excuse the link, I’m not very good at reddit,) not the pancake flipper kind of spatula

u/Kenmoreland · 3 pointsr/Cooking

A slotted spatula, also known as a fish turner also available in a left handed model and a nonstick version.

:D YAY!!!!! GIFTING IS FUN! Thanks for this!

I keep entering this as my prize in raffle contests so it's now become a personal vendetta. Oh this would be good for the kitchen because I melted my other one in the dishwasher. This froggy mitt is just super cute. :D

u/rorlover11 · 2 pointsr/3Dprinting

I've always used one of these It gives you a little more leverage to carefully pry the object up.

u/revmamacrystal · 2 pointsr/Random_Acts_Of_Amazon

I have one of these- a 5 in 1 Spatula and it really does all 5 things it claims. Less utensils around and it comes in manly colors.

u/msangeld · 2 pointsr/instantpot

I use my instant pot for popcorn, that said there have been a couple of times where only part of the kernels popped. I think the secret is to use enough coconut oil to cover the bottom of the pot, and be sure to stir the kernels around to make sure they are covered in oil. After doing that, the last thing I do before putting the lid on is to make sure that the kernels are as flat as possible by patting them down across the bottom. I generally use a spatula (like these) for it all.

Doing that generally gives me good popcorn results.

Mix and match as you see fit :)

This will add some detail to the sides of cakes. I like it more than the Wilton one (that is not textured) it’s thinner so it leaves a sharper edge.

https://www.amazon.com/Ateco-1447-Decorating-Icing-Smoother/dp/B0000VOOXI/ref=sxbs_bbp_recs_sx_m_p_v1?keywords=wilton+turntable&pd_rd_i=B0000VOOXI&pd_rd_r=1dd000e0-6a20-47aa-a7eb-1430dd1e605c&pd_rd_w=lxEhH&pd_rd_wg=2lLOU&pf_rd_p=c76ba563-2cae-47e4-929a-947a3c225819&pf_rd_r=62XTE33MCSK5G4ATB62S&qid=1572799240

Turn table: there are “better ones” but much more expensive. This is my favorite Wilton one. It’s elevated- which makes it easier to pick up larger cakes off of it. Also if you are piping on the side it’s a little taller so you don’t have to crouch so low.

https://www.amazon.com/Wilton-Trim-n-turn-Decorating-Turntable-Supplies/dp/B00AQ7ISMO/ref=mp_s_a_1_32?keywords=wilton+turntable&qid=1572799358&sr=8-32

9” offset spatula. Wilton changed their handles a while ago.. and I think the new metal blade is too flexible on the new ones- I don’t find the new ones as comfortable and don’t think they do as good of a job. So I like the old ones (couldn’t find one) or these Ateco ones.

https://www.amazon.com/Ateco-1305-75-Inch-Stainless-Dishwasher/dp/B0000VLEU4/ref=mp_s_a_1_7?keywords=wilton+9+inch+angled+spatula&qid=1572799468&sprefix=wilton+9%E2%80%9D+i&sr=8-7

Cake Leveler: this will help greatly with getting nice flat tops- even if her cakes dome. The Wilton one is a great one for the price, and for smaller cakes. For larger cakes, skip the large version and get a bigger than you think serated knife. Living the dream is the 3rd option... the Agby double blade!

https://www.amazon.com/Wilton-Leveler-Small-10-Inch-415-0165/dp/B007E8KCFY/ref=mp_s_a_1_3?keywords=wilton+cake+leveler%2C+small%2C+10-inch&qid=1572799751&sprefix=wilton+cake+level&sr=8-3

Style of knife: may be able to get at restaurant supply store

Out of budget and not needed for her.. but a dream!

Tips. I recommend Wilton to start because most blogs will say “use Wilton tip 1M” and it’s easier to get use to the tips. This case stores everything easy.

https://www.amazon.com/Wilton-Decorating-Piping-Tip-Piece/dp/B00C4UH6XI/ref=mp_s_a_1_4?keywords=wilton+tip+set&qid=1572799964&sprefix=wimton+tip&sr=8-4

Couplers. Skip Wilton ones if (the plains white once’s if you get in a kit are fine... ) but these are better: you don’t need a million but 4-8 is nice. Basically you want one for each color of icing you put on cake so you can change tips. So instead of two bags of icing you just have on.. and can change the tip to make vines, then another tip for leaves, and a larger tip for writing.

https://www.amazon.com/Ateco-398-Standard-Couplers-Decorating/dp/B00272GS64/ref=mp_s_a_1_3?keywords=ateco+coupler&qid=1572800119&sr=8-3

Bags. Any count is fine- but 50-100 would be best. I like the 100 count because it’s easier to remove / store in the box it comes in.

12” for decorating

18” for icing the whole cake.

https://www.amazon.com/Wilton-2104-1249-Decorating-Tools-count/dp/B00096ZTRY/ref=mp_s_a_1_2_sspa?keywords=wilton+disposable+decorating+bags&qid=1572800239&sprefix=wilton+dispo&sr=8-2-spons&psc=1&spLa=ZW5jcnlwdGVkUXVhbGlmaWVyPUEyN0lRNUFCTjdFSldLJmVuY3J5cHRlZElkPUEwMTA1MTI2MTZVNlpCUkRQWjFOUyZlbmNyeXB0ZWRBZElkPUEwNjE0MjE1M1JPVk9ZWkJJTE9XQSZ3aWRnZXROYW1lPXNwX3Bob25lX3NlYXJjaF9hdGYmYWN0aW9uPWNsaWNrUmVkaXJlY3QmZG9Ob3RMb2dDbGljaz10cnVl

Gel colors:

If you go Wilton:
These are awesome: you can get them in primary, pastel, and neon. I like them because you can just squeeze into the icing instead of the old way of dipping into a pot.

https://www.amazon.com/Wilton-Neon-Gel-Food-Color/dp/B01KO6NAM4/ref=mp_s_a_1_5?keywords=wilton+gel+color&qid=1572800403&sr=8-5

A better overal brand:

Americolor: the best thing is you can buy much large qty of colors so if you always use red.. you can buy 8 oz instead of 1 oz.

https://www.amazon.com/Coloring-AmeriColor-Student-Bottles-Colors/dp/B00KCUXRLC/ref=mp_s_a_1_3?keywords=americolor+gel+food+coloring&qid=1572800488&sprefix=americolor+&sr=8-3

You don’t need to buy every color because you can mix basic colors to dial in an exact shade.

Anything Wilton you can buy at joanns, michaels, hobby lobby. Make sure you use coupons!

Another option is you can sign her up for a decorating basics class at joanns or Michaels. It’s been a while since I taught- and it’s gift that will end up costing her money (you have to make cake and icing 3 out of 4 weeks of class- and she will probably want to buy extras). You can buy her the basic course 1 kit- but she’s still need to buy other things and i told my students to expect to pay about $100 all in with Wilton supplies, using some coupons, ingredients and extras. They could do it for less... or a hell of a lot more.

I made a pdf for my students with resources, color charts to mix icing, recipes if you’d like me to send you a copy.

Also, check out sweet sugar belle’s website. Lots of inspiration for cookies!

What city are you close to? I can search for a good cake decorating store- not chain that sells things like 1 box for cupcakes or 1 board for a cake.. you can pick up some small but super helpful things for a few dollars.

I love silicone spoons/spatulas! Other than steel serving utensils they are all i use. I give high praise to the di oro line. I had mine for about 2-3years and during the holiday i noticed my spoon had a nick (from a knife most likely?) in it. I emailed them about their lifetime warranty and asked if they could just replace this one item rather than give my full money back or replace the whole set. They responded the same night and i received the replacement three days later. Other than that customer service, they have a steel center in the handle which makes it rigid and a pleasure to hold and use. These do claim a 600degree threshold as well (which i didnt realize until looking for the link just now).

These are the things I bought this summer when I purchased my frist Blackstone.

For squeeze bottles: criteria: they dont leak as I take them camping https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B076PT3BD9/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o00_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

For spatulas & Scraper: Wanted ones that dont bend and hold up well without breaking the bank
https://www.amazon.com/Stainless-Steel-Metal-Spatula-Set/dp/B072QT1LYY/ref=sr_1_1?keywords=anmarko&qid=1575082739&sr=8-1

Cafeteria trays: surprised how much I love/use these, such easy cleanup camping, no excessive waste of paper plates etc. Mine were red, pack of six, and a bit cheaper than what the price is showing now. I use them for everything, chopping veggies, preparing steaks, just toss the dirty one aside, grab a clean one, put the cooked stuff on them, let the steaks rest on them etc. Much sturdier than paper plates. But I also find myself using them at home a lot now when going outside and back inside. Easy carrying food.

Meat temp pen: its cheap and it works, not the best you can buy
https://www.amazon.com/ThermoPro-Digital-Instant-Thermometer-Kitchen/dp/B01IHHLB3W/ref=sr_1_7?keywords=thermopro&qid=1575083104&sr=8-7

Digital Read Temperature for the griddle. Cant find the one I bought

I already owned excellent quality dome lids. Get one! They work great for steaming vegetables, melting cheese, etc.

If you bought the new pro series with a lid, you can make things like pizza really well :) I made it all summer on my smaller 22" with lid and figured out the best base to set the pizza on was a wire cooking rack. I found the pizza stone worked as well but it got very hot directly on the griddle, and I figured it was just as easy to place it on a rack. Either the pizza directly or the stone on rack. So a cheap cooking rack is handy.

Lots and lots of paper towels :)

u/ShortScorpio · 2 pointsr/HelpMeFind

This looks like an angled pancake turner, a pointed slotted spoon or a rounded fish spatula. This is visually similar, but not the exact thing. What's throwing me off is how short the handle seems.

Edit: Found the Uni Tool Which, is again, similar but not exact.

Learning tower + little chefs set + apron of her own.

We have this:
https://www.amazon.com/Sassafras-Little-Childrens-Kitchen-Tools/dp/B0002EXVK0/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1511227941&sr=8-2&keywords=toddler+cooking+utensils&dpID=41j85aP8DIL&preST=_SY300_QL70_&dpSrc=srch

My kids are older now, but starting around 20 months, I'd put them in the learning tower with their chef set and a bowl and let them go to town pretending to mix and cook. It didn't always work, but sometimes it would buy me a glorious 15-20 min to get dinner started.

u/IAmDotorg · 2 pointsr/3Dprinting

You can also use an offset icing spatula, which works better for the same reason its better for frosting (You can get it more level without your hand getting in the way.)

They're like $5 for a cheap one, and when you're not popping plastic off your printer, you can use it to frost a cake. And everyone knows cake makes everything better.

Something like this:

https://www.amazon.com/Ateco-1385-Spatula-4-5-Inch-Stainless/dp/B000WG14FC/ref=sr_1_4?ie=UTF8&qid=1494939202&sr=8-4&keywords=Offset+spatula

The important thing is to use something without pointed corners, so a razor is a bad idea.

u/sunnygovan · 2 pointsr/CandyMakers

No bother at all.

2) I'd just use an actual scraper (wooden handled - no idea if random plastic is foodsafe). My local cafe actually uses one for frying, I asked and it was indeed just a wallpaper scraper.

3) I would make a chewy caramel for that, possibly chilling it a bit before adding it to the fudge. https://www.inspiredtaste.net/8947/salted-caramels-recipe/

A good heat-proof spatula would be a good tool.
I like the all one piece silicone spats, like this.
They are easy to clean and highly useful when scraping out bowls, stirring while cooking on the stove, and stealing cookie dough for eating.

u/GlamRockDave · 1 pointr/Cooking

A typical wooden stir fry set like this one will have an angled wooden spoon that is super useful for scraping the contours of the wok.
I use a carbon steel wok so I try not to use metal utensils with it so I don't scuff and scrap off the seasoning.

I have a wooden version of one of these that I used primarily for my wok. Don't know if it has a specific name. I found my wooden one at an Asian market.

EDIT: apparently it's called Chuan (Chinese for spatula, I assume)

A quick motion will always look nice when you're spreading a smooth sauce. You have that appearance of hesitation with the balsamic the way it is...better to center the tomato and mozzarella and just use a spoon to drizzle the vinegar, imo. Tight and not fussed with. I cannot help you with a match...

It looks like some massively oversized server, but I can guess why the shape is useful in turning foods without breaking them, and the flat part can scrape pans effectively.

Perhaps when she knows an exact match cannot be found, she will be ready for something like this set?

Or this slightly less expensive set.

A slotted version is also available.

They also allow turning foods without breakage, and the ones with the slanted front edge are good for scraping the bottom of the pan. The long handles are safer for the cook, too.

Bamboo is naturally nonstick if you run it under some water just before using.

It is also safe to use at high cooking heat. The white plastic rice paddles are not for cooking-- they could melt and leave residues in food.

Even cheaper ($1) bamboo utensils in those same shapes are widely available in Asian markets or sections. They work just as well, and do need to be replaced every so often.

Of course, this set looks like it has some of the annoyingly odd shapes that might capture your mum's fancy!

Good luck. My family broke a cheap little spatula I had, and tried like mad to find a replacement. They bought me three different ones instead. They still look for one in any kitchen utensil shop!

Silicone Anything I actually think that the silicone mats are my most used items in my kitchen. Next to that, is a nice set of silicone spatulas. They make cleanup soo easy!

u/JapanNow · 1 pointr/Cooking

I bought an 8-inch T-Fal nonstick (at a discount store, maybe Marshall's?) for cooking eggs and it's excellent.

To keep the coating pristine:

  • don't use "spray oil" (it gets gummy); use a paper towel, etc, to swab it lightly with butter or oil

  • cook ONLY EGGS in it

  • ALWAYS use a SILICONE spatula to stir/remove the eggs

  • ALWAYS wash it by hand and DON'T use the "scrubby" side of the sponge (it makes fine scratches which the eggs will stick to, starting the cycle of stick - scrub - stick more - scrub more)

I've had my pan for over two years and it's like brand new.
