There was a book written by a black american economist about how African-American culture is actually a hold over from 18-19th century southern US redneck culture which was itself a hold over from some poor Scottish and some northern English farmer towns who emigrated en masse to the south.

These people became wealthy enough to buy slaves and black people grew up living among their culture, eventually adopting it, with their own adaptations of course, that persisted. Once they became free they eventually brought it with them as they moved into northern inner cities where it became a symbol of "blackness". It has survived longer in it's original form thanks to US social stratification that still exists today in many forms - while the middle/upper southern white culture has more generally merged with the north/west.

So we can still thank Europe for at least a part of black culture.

Sounds like someone needs to read Black Rednecks and White Liberals

TL;DR: Thomas Sowell (who is black) explains how language and behavior that liberals describe as "authentically black" is actually derived from the culture of poor white "rednecks" who brought it with them from the Scottish Highlands.

Thank you for linking this. The parent comment to yours was at the top of this thread when I started reading the comments, so your link to the transcript of the NPR interview with Daryl Davis was the first information about him that I had ever consumed. What a story! My jaw dropped a couple times, I said "Wow," out loud at least three times, and I almost cried at one point.

This man's story deserves to be heard around the world. It makes me want to be a better person, and attempt to be even a little bit as brave and respectful of other human beings whose viewpoints clash with mine, as this man is. I'm definitely going to check out his book, "Klan-Destine Relationships," and the Netflix documentary that was linked in the parent comment.

*Edit: Well, I guess I won't be reading "Klan-Destine Relationships" any time soon, if the cheapest version (paperback, used) is $99!

Thomas Sowell is a black economist and author who writes on these (and other) topics very clearly and convincingly. In short: it's not about race at all - various ethnicities have been subjugated and marginalized throughout history around the world. Many have overcome adversity and become wildly successful...but it's always due to cultural values of work ethic, focus on education, and trying to create better opportunities for children, in spite of whatever social barriers may exist. Whenever political methods of "equalization" are tried they never work, because they don't come from within that group and don't address what's necessary for a given group to become successful.

A review of your book on Amazon warns that you may have been taken advantage of by the Klan members, as in, your story may cast them as "not that bad after all", and that you supported their claim of them being victims of "reverse racism". The full review can be seen through that Amazon link. What is your view of these criticisms, and what would you say are the aims of your work with the Klan?

On average, black Americans are poorer than white Americans. This was initially due to pre-Civil Rights Movement blatant racism and discrimination. After the Civil Rights Movement, blatant racism started to fade away, but our educational system has kept blacks from escaping from their poverty. Schools are funded by local taxes, so when the people are poorer, the schools aren't as good. The abundance of land and quality of roads has allowed the wealthy to geographically isolate themselves from the poor (usually black, but also white and Hispanic).

However, African American culture may also play a detrimental role, as addressed in this book by anthropologist John Ogbu.

u/hga_another · 55 pointsr/KotakuInAction

Wow, but this guy is ignorant, which I guess has become mandatory for the mainstream libertarianism that Reason represents.

> I'd imagine that some of the most conservative students come from socioeconomically disadvantaged, rural backgrounds. And point three is also true, though some conservatives evidently feel that their professors will retaliate against them if they speak up (though they could be wrong about this—feelings are not facts).

By and large, if reports about what this book says about competitive admissions are true, at places like Cornell they've found ways to all but eliminate admitting strong non-legacy conservative students. And those "feelings" he denigrates are very much "factual" given that there have been for years, decades really, too many well publicized horror stories about conservative students speaking out in class and getting anything from failing grades to actions trying to and as I recall at least a few times getting them expelled. Plus starting in the Obama era it's become trivial for a female peer to arrange expulsion in far too many colleges.

He also claims to be ignorant in words I've not quoted of all the fields that in the US have become almost or entirely closed to conservatives, like science and math; today I wouldn't even try to become a scientist, and the signs were clear when I started that process in higher education back in 1979.

A reply to the down-votes you are getting for stating a fact:

It is distressing in particular that many people refuse to acknowledge that over 50% of murders in the US are committed by the black minority (around 13%), as if it were some kind of embarrassing chronic racial failing instead of a consequence of lack of education and the breakdown of the family dynamic - and other issues. On a related note, how ironic is it that black Americans were growing richer as a group from the 1930's until momentum slowed dramatically in the 1960's - after the civil rights era? (Am reading black scholar Thomas Sowell's book "Black Rednecks and White Liberals")

We cannot fix the problem by pretending that our reality is only racist hate-speak. This willful ignorance I find rather terrifying because it is being manifested with such vehement, unreasoning anger.

I spent this last January in the Dominican Republic which is largely black and mixed race. Was great to be around black people who felt free to just be people and without all the silent undercurrents of fear, resentment and blame that we have in the states. The Dominicans I met live in the now, take you at face value, and were just wonderful people: cheerful, kind, hugely family oriented and as a group, amazingly good looking. But they are incredibly poor. I really don't know how they do it; they were inspiring.

Edit: Excellent series of essays on origins and ramifications of southern and northern, black and white cultures, plus more:Black Rednecks and White Liberals.

You might enjoy this book; Black Rednecks and White Liberals by Dr. Thomas Sowell it's written by a black, Harvard educated economist. He makes the argument that ghetto culture in the black community is actually white cracker culture from the antebellum South. He traces it's roots back to the Celtic fringe culture of pre-Anglicisation Scotland, Wales etc. He compares the black cultures that formed in the North under the influence of New Englanders who immigrated from the South of England (an area that was more cultured) to the black culture that formed in the Southern US under the influence of the Celtic fringe immigrants from the borderlands of England who immigrated before Anglicisation took hold in the region and led to a more educated population.

Here is the book on tape from YouTube, it's about 11 hours long.

***

This explosive new book challenges many of the long-prevailing assumptions about blacks, about Jews, about Germans, about slavery, and about education. Plainly written, powerfully reasoned, and backed with a startling array of documented facts, Black Rednecks and White Liberals takes on not only the trendy intellectuals of our times but also such historic interpreters of American life as Alexis de Tocqueville and Frederick Law Olmsted. In a series of long essays, this book presents an in-depth look at key beliefs behind many mistaken and dangerous actions, policies, and trends. It presents eye-opening insights into the historical development of the ghetto culture that is today wrongly seen as a unique black identity--a culture cheered on toward self-destruction by white liberals who consider themselves "friends" of blacks. An essay titled "The Real History of Slavery" presents a jolting re-examination of that tragic institution and the narrow and distorted way it is too often seen today. The reasons for the venomous hatred of Jews, and of other groups like them in countries around the world, are explored in an essay that asks, "Are Jews Generic?" Misconceptions of German history in general, and of the Nazi era in particular, are also re-examined. So too are the inspiring achievements and painful tragedies of black education in the United States. "Black Rednecks and White Liberals" is the capstone of decades of outstanding research and writing on racial and cultural issues by Thomas Sowell.

Thomas Sowell and a number of others have argued African American hip hop culture is basically white redneck behavior, Sowell in "Black Rednecks And White Liberals" which I'm about to begin. Colin Woodward's "American Nation's" touches on this as well, as do other authors who've penned books on the topic, although his book is more about all of the regional cultures that make up our country dating back to the groups that founded those regions and how their beliefs are still resoundingly alive and well and how politicians actively exploit these differences we have between one another. There are other academics I've heard doing research like this but I'm having trouble recall their names, I heard about them in some podcasts. But, there's definitely more reading you can do to explore this idea more.

You really do.

>In his book, No Longer Separate, Not Yet Equal; Race and Class in Elite College Admission and Campus Life, Espenshade notes that the biggest testing advantage belongs to African-American students. Black students who were accepted into these elite schools could have SAT scores on a 1600 scale that were 310 points lower than a white, middle-class applicant. Hispanic applicants enjoyed a 130 point advantage.
>
>Low-income students, regardless of race, also enjoyed a 130-point advantage and working-class applicants got a 70-point advantage. Upper-middle class students enjoyed a 50-point advantage.
>
>The applicants who were hurt the most by the affirmative-action admission policies were Asian students, who had to earn 140 points more than the typical middle-class, white applicant to gain admission.

No one even denies this nonsense; The Atlantic even argues that affirmative action hasn't gone far enough and only concedes that it's sometimes discriminatory in terms of the negative effect on Asian students.

u/erthunin · 20 pointsr/communism

This article takes as its basis the Western liberal position on sexuality, so a serious criticism of this article would begin with a discussion of works like Jasbir Puar's Terrorist Assemblages: Homo-Nationalism in Queer Times. This work, and others like it, should form the basis of a Marxist-Leninist understanding of the issue.

But besides that, there are no sources to this article. So for instance, when the author says things like:

>In January 1934, homosexuals were arrested en masse in the Soviet Union's main cities. Among those imprisoned were many actors, musicians and artists.

If there were so many people caught up in these laws, why doesn't the author simply name a few of these people?

Or take this for example:

>Historians have noted numerous suicides in the Red Army and a growing mood of panic among Soviet gays at that time.

Which historians? What works did they write? As the article is presented, there simply is no way to follow up on this. I myself had never heard anything about Maxim Gorky's son being 'seduced' by a homosexual until I read this article, and I would be very interested to follow up on this. But the article doesn't give any sources for this claim, and neither does the link it is copied and pasted from.

>In 1936 the Commissar for Justice, Nikolai Krylenko, declared homosexuality a political crime against the Soviet state and the proletariat.

Again, I would be very interested in seeing a source for this, but there is none. As any serious researcher not completely taken in by the anti-communist paradigm knows, you simply can't take anything these people say at their word. For all I know, Krylenko could have said this. It wouldn't be all that surprising. But given the nature of 'scholarship' on the Soviet Union, you simply can not take someone's word for it. People like this will report anything as true, so long as it advances some sort of agenda, no matter how unlikely it may be.

>In the mid-1930s gays flooded into Soviet camps in their thousands, and the influx apparently remained steady throughout the years article 121 was in force.

Given what scholars already know about the Soviet penal system, we should have exact figures on how many people were charged with the criminal offense of homosexuality and sentenced. So where does this vague notion of "thousands" come from? Soviet archival figures? Not likely.

>Alexander Solzhenitsyn called it a 'sordid' bit of legislation. In the Gulag Archipelago, dedicated to 'all those who did not live long enough to tell the story', there isn't a word of sympathy for oppressed homosexuals.

Solzhenitsyn was basically a fascist that sympathized with the Nazis. That's why he was in prison after all. If he made references to that in his book, a source would be good. But the author provides none.

>The fate of homosexuals in Soviet prisons and camps is unprecedented in the scope of its tragedy and brutality. Not only were the numbers vast, homosexual rape took place in every camp and prison without exception. Not only did the Soviet system fail to cure the 'foreign disease', it led to a dramatic growth in the numbers of homosexuals. Huge numbers of people who had not previously been gay became categorised as opushchennye (lit: crestfallen, degraded, downcast; also slang term for one who has been beaten up, raped and urinated upon).

How does the author know this? They don't say. In fact, the whole basis of this nonsense seems to be the next source they cite:

>In his book The Mordovian Marathon (Jerusalem, 1979), Eduard Kuznetsov devotes a chapter called Queer Folk to homosexuals in the camps.

>“According to people in the know,” he writes, “90 per cent of convicts are homosexual. But only passive gays—about 10 per cent—are regarded as such. They are the so-called kozly (lit: billy goats, or customers of prostitutes) and petukhi (lit: cocks, or faggots). Active homosexuals are so commonplace they don't even merit a special name.”

It appears the author is seriously trying to insinuate nearly the entire Soviet penal population was homosexual. This is so outlandish as to warrant complete dismissal of anything the author is saying. It not only makes no sense, it doesn't even conform with what the best scholarship on the nature of prison-sex has to say about the subject. All it is doing is force-fitting modern Western sexual epistemology onto a population where it makes no sense. I suggest people read Fleisher's The Myth of Prison Rape: Sexual Culture in American Prisons to see just how much nonsense the author is spewing. The author not only doesn't understand homosexuality, he doesn't understand anything about prisoners and sex.

>The first convicted homosexual to come out was the Leningrad poet Gennady Trifonov. In December 1977, he sent the following open letter to Literaturnaya Gazeta from Camp No. 398/38 in the western Urals:

Gennady Trifonov was a dissident who spent all of four years in the Soviet penal system, between the years of 1976 and 1980, not exactly the time period people usually associate with the worst periods of the Soviet penal system. Part of the charges against him also included serving alcohol to minors.

How true any of Trifonov's claims are is not demonstrable. No doubt he exaggerated the hardship he claims to have endured, as most prisoners all over the world do. Solzhenitsyn claimed people were arrested for stealing spools of thread and getting sentences twice as long as he got for spreading pro-Nazi propaganda to soldiers in the military. The evidence? Only Solzhenitsyn's word, the word of a fascist who advocated things like America should have nuked Vietnam (cause that would have gone over so well with their flunkies in the South).

Nonetheless, Trifonov does say something very interesting that completely undermines the case the author of this article is trying to make:

>“I know people who have either forgotten the end of their prison term, or who have not managed physically to survive that long. Their bodies were taken off the electric wire; they were found hanging in prison cells, tortured to death by prisoners in bestial mood or beaten by guards, mad. I know their names; I have access to the written evidence of witnesses. In a year and a half of this hell I have carefully studied 22 convictions for homosexuality in the USSR.

If this is the case, it would seem to indicate the number of people arrested for being homosexuals was actually quite low. Surely if there really was some sort of massive campaign to persecute homosexuals by the Soviet government, Trifonov would have been able to come up with more than 22 names after a year and a half.

The rest of the personal testimonies cited are equally unverifiable. Some of the things they report may have happened, they may not have. One of the testimonies (Valery Klimov) comes from someone that is admitted to have had sex with people underage, which is a crime anywhere with age of consent laws. He claims to have watched 10 homosexuals murdered in front of him, which reads on its face like a lie only a committed anti-communist would take at face value.

The book the writer was working on at the time, the strikingly but misleadingly titled Redneck Manifesto, is truly great. It's like a print version of the most biting, knowledgeable, and funny commentary at TiA—but written two decades ago. It was "ahead of its time," as people say when they don't know how long the world's already been the same kind of fucked up it is now.

Reviewers I'd expected to embrace it all had the same wrongheaded complaints about it. The first was that it's a "Marxist" book. Nobody (to this day) seemed to recognize it as a unique entry in a long tradition that's recently come to be called libertarian class analysis, a framework that the non-establishment right (and some of what refuses to call itself the "right" because "right" means redneck cooties) is just now finally coming (back) around to. It's the original, irrecuperable, not bullshit version of "privilege" talk, the one longed for by everyone who thinks there's something to it but it's gone too far now. That's not quite what happened.

Reviewers' other complaint was that too much of a book that said Redneck on the cover was about the proto-"hipster" scene the author lived in, the conspicuous alterna-consumers and self-obsessed public diarists ("'zine" makers) of the post-punk world. '90s tumblrinas! He accurately pegged their cultish pen-pal network as a hazardously overspilling poison vat of hypocritical upper-class white assholery, cultivated pseudo-illness and pseudo-guilt, etc.—everything that makes us here today wonder "Where the fuck did all this shit come from?!"

He saw it first. He even predicted the "trucker hat" fad and the return of lumberjack beards. How the fuck?!

A lot of Goad's other work is crazy and/or trollin', but Redneck is a monster truth bomb about the one thing he truly understands. Non-referrer Amazon link because Thought Catalog is fuccbois. Best $1 (plus shipping) you can spend right now.

This phenomenon is covered in the book Black Rednecks and White Liberals by Thomas Sowell. The basic premise is that one of the root causes for poverty is not race, but behavior.

Prior to the Civil War, there were free, moderately successful blacks living in the North. After the war, freed slaves gradually learned oafish behavior from their white trash neighbors. Then they moved north and brought their "culture" with them, slowly displacing the existing culture, which placed more of a value on marriage and education.

> if I have a ton of POC family whom I never saw as any different until people got angry for me for seeing them as equals, how could I be racist?

Colorblindness ("I don't see race") is a step backwards. See this book.

>Actual racists aren't friends with people of color

Considering how it's a cliche now that racists say "But some of my best friends are black!," this is also bullshit.

Buy and read this book. Then read your posts here again and you'll understand what people are getting at. It's not that people don't want you to do your best to be an ally. It's that you're kind of coming into a black space to tell black people about how not-racist you are. It's good that you're speaking out against racism, but coming to the black section of reddit is kind of preaching to the choir. Reddit in general has a racism problem, so it's best to spread these types of messages in those spaces.

Even just reading the first few chapters will give you an idea of what people here are saying.

u/squeezebuttmagic · 15 pointsr/worldnews

That might be true for a small minority of black Republicans, but the reasons Black Republicans vote GOP are varied, and the vast majority of them are very well-educated people who feel that Democrats are very [subtly] racist, reinforcing dependence and victimhood in blacks and using them to feed their savior complexes.

In fact, if you look at the largest Black church congregations, the preachers heavily endorse Democratic candidates. Over 90% of blacks vote democrats, and most of them are religious.

There are books written on this issue, as well as talks with various members of the black community.

You might want to listen to what they have to say instead of making assumptions for them, which is pretty much what the left has always done.

There is a whole series of these talks.

There are books about this by John McWhorter, Thomas Sowell

Some minorities loathe the victim complexes within their communities and the removed intellectuals in their ivory towers who tell them what they need.

EDIT thank you, for proving exactly what I said by down voting me, and proving exactly what they all express during those talks.

Assuming that all black people are a hivemind who have to vote in the exact same way. The horrifying notion that highly educated black people might have a different opinion, must be religion. They simply can't think for themselves. /s

Per Nisbet and Deneen, it does logically follow that a hyper-liberal view of immigration (it is immoral to bar people from moving across states, open-borders), would require an expansion of the state to uphold order and replace the stability and social trust original communities had a priori the effective dissolution of them via widespread immigration. Individualism and the state march hand in hand.

But this political compass is fucking absurd, on that I think we can all agree.

Don't have any insight into WHERE they're held, though I'd imagine in the major cities there are still big prisons.

Here's some information on the legal system in SDF-held territory though, that's relevant to your enquiry:

> [Justice/Peace Committees sit] at the commune and neighbourhood/village community levels, [and] constitute the basis of the new justice system.

> The aim of the committees is not to condemn one or both sides in a proceeding but to achieve consensus between the conflicting parties.

> [...]

> The committees do not handle murder [or terrorism] cases - those go directly to higher-level bodies.

> [...]

> The death penalty has been abolished [...] A penalty of life imprisonment (max term temporarily set at 20 years) can be imposed only in cases of murder, torture, or terror.

From this, it seems most likely they'll be first tried in a District-level court and the cases will be heard by a panel of judges. They do probably have the right to appeal, but my information on that process is limited.

This is taken from [this book] (https://www.amazon.co.uk/Revolution-Rojava-Democratic-Liberation-Kurdistan/dp/0745336590) which, for all its faults, is one of the most in-depth studies currently available on life in the Federation.

When you control for all of the things you're mentioning, blacks are still convicted more often and receive harsher penalties than their white counterparts.

This is a well established, well researched, well documented fact of social life.

Google scholar can pull up more articles on structural racism than anyone cares to read. A good book to start with is "Racism Without Racists", which addresses some of the softer parts of racism.

Naturally, almost all white people are like this.

They start by defining a contradictory term:

> Colour-blind racism

Gender-blind sexism anyone? Use contradictions to increase the edge!

> is racism that acts as if skin colour does not matter – even when it does.

This could be an interesting concept. Too bad they forget to write about it.

> also known as aversive racism

It's not, actually. Good thing they mentioned this though, because that seems to be what the rest of the post tries to talk about.

I don't really know what to say about this. Is it a strawman? It seems contradictory on multiple levels, and they never actually describe a racist behavior. They seem to just be saying that they're oppressed because white people just think racist things while somehow not realizing it. Then they complain about white people stereotyping others, while stereotyping white people like crazy.

What really gets me though is simply the terminology. It's not enough to call it racism, or 'stealth racism' or 'subconscious racism' - simply saying exactly what you mean is not postmodern enough. Apparently this particular term was made popular by a book which:

  • Sets up a case of a white person discriminating
  • Asserts that the white person is not a racist
  • Concludes that you can have racism without racists

    I just can't anymore.

Sam Harris also defends and has conversations with Charles Murray; is Sam Harris a Nazi? Thaddeus Russell also agrees with the data and he's a lefty.

If a person puts on a lab coat and tests a thousand black people and white people and finds a variance in the data are they a Nazi?

You do know that Murrays IQ findings were one part of one chapter of a 800 page publication? You do know the co-author of The Bell Curve, Herrnstein, was one of the most respected social science researchers in the country?

Have you even read the Bell Curve? or unbiased summaries? Or any of the countless interviews where Murray systematically and repeatedly explains why he is not a supremacist in any way and tirelessly walks through what the data actually means. Should we start censoring academics because we don't like their data?

If a black researcher compiles data that shows a one percent 'average' advantage on jumping ability of black people is he a 'black supremacist? If a man compiles data that men have better spatial reasoning is he a misogynist? What if a women compiles the data?

If I put a level on the ground and it gives me a flat reading and I record that on a piece of paper does that make me a flat earther?

Nazism and White Supremacy are broad political ideologies with lots of made up data and cherry picked history to warp their followers to their toxic evil ideology. IQ data is not a political ideology and acknowledging that one particular IQ data set is true does not mean you subscribe to white supremacy.

Please recognize the insanity and lack of logic in what you are clumsily trying to suggest.

Edit. You do realize that this country ended slavery, ended Jim Crow, ended segregated schools and had a civil rights movement culminating in laws that enshrine protections for minorities? Why do you see racists around every corner? You realize that there are multiple black intellectuals that give strong arguments that systemic racism is gone in the US right?

Let go of identity politics, embrace MLK Jr., Not Malcolm X.

The bulk of white southerners can trace their ancestry to a region of England where the people were: Very religious, sexually promiscuous, prone to violence and under-valued education.

He mainly discusses how this affected black culture in the US since black and southern cultures are closely aligned but he also mentions that until the big diaspora of black southerners to the rest of the US, black northerners routinely outscored not only black southerners on school tests but also white southerners.

Some additional recommended reading is Killing the Black Body, Dorothy Roberts goes into some detail on how Black feminist issues are intentionally ignored by the feminist movement at large. For anyone interested in my notes on this interview with Harvard, Columbia, and University of Chicago educated Thomas Sowell, on his book Intellectuals and Race (no affiliate link), please see below. I was watching it on Youtube at 1.5.x, and it's just so packed full of common sense, backed by research, that I had to take notes to do it justice. Keep in mind these are my notes, and not all are just straight quotes. So there's some intelligence guided by experience.

Substandard English (e.g. black-speak) is holding black people back. Aspects of the language (e.g. "axe" for "ask" ) traces back to both the south and Britain before that - not Africa.

In societies where widespread multiculturalism and diversity exists, you find societies that are barely able to constrain widespread violence. (e.g. India barley coheres as a nation; the number of killed between Hinduism and Muslims ran into the hundreds of thousands when Britain made India free).

Diversity in college acceptance policies doesn't produce integration. Before affirmative action, particularly in the form of diversity quotas in College acceptance policies, and you find increased division. Institutions in eras prior to diversity mandates generally had better integration and less racial division. The data for diversity programs doesn't support the existence of diversity programs - it refutes it.

The black subculture in America today is is holding blacks back. Intellectuals today should be fixing the problem, instead of extending, or exploiting it.

Progressives were the racists. Under Woodrow Wilson, certain aspects of segregation began enforcement. Liberals by insisting on their views repeatedly, without data supporting their views, setup an intellectual culture that made things worse - not better. Multiculturalism - bringing students into institutions that they're ill-qualified for, sets the students back. The " intelligentsia" pays no price for its views because there's not test, nor evidence for the basis of their ideas.

"Intellectuals" have deep intelligence in very limited areas and it's dangerous. E.g. they're a mile-deep, but an inch wide. Most have not studied affirmative action, multiculturalism, etc. But the ideas, amidst the intellectual crowd have expanded - like a plague.

"No individual or Group can be blamed for being born into circumstances that lack... advantages. But neither can 'society' be automatically assumed to be either the cause or the cure for such disparities." - Despite centuries of slavery, Jim Crow laws, bad policy in urban environments, etc. For the child born into challenging circumstances (e.g. Detroit vs. Greenwich, CT) - no one (e.g. not society, not whites, not me) is to blame (expect perhaps that child's parents). The average black kid today is, materially, better off than the average black kid growing up in the 50s. The difference today, is that the schools are worse, and that's bad policy (primarily, bad liberal policy - since liberals run many/most urban schools). Circumstances are not the fault of slavery, or anything else that happened 100 - 200 years ago.

James Flynn; after the Second World War, black and white American Soldiers had children. And those children, growing up in Germany, showed no IQ differences at all. The black and white kids had the same IQ. The reason that blacks and whites had the same IQ in Germany, unlike int he US, according to Flynn, is that the children growing up in Germany grew up with no black subculture. (e.g. there was no gangster rap in Germany).

... Also, just because I think it's appropriate... "Ignorance is preferable to error, and he is less remote from the truth who believes nothing than he who believes what is wrong. - Thomas Jefferson

I personally can connect better with people of my own race. That is not to say it is impossible for me or anyone to connect with someone of a different race, it is just easier. Humans evolved as social animals that live in tight-knit communities based on familiarity and trust. There actually have been many studies that have backed this idea up.

Just to link a few:

More diverse neighborhoods have lower social cohesion.

A 10% increase in diversity doubles the chance of psychotic episodes.

There have been many studies done on the schools in Shaker Heights, Ohio, an affluent (generally middle class to very wealthy), racially integrated suburb of Cleveland. Even in one of the best funded districts in the state, black students perform worse than white students.

http://muse.jhu.edu/journals/csd/summary/v044/44.6jackson.html

Black American Students in an Affluent Suburb presents an interesting departure from traditional studies of the Black and White achievement gap. A trio of elements made this study uniquely different. First, the school district is considered to be one of the best in the nation. Second, Shaker Heights is an upper middle-class suburb with a median family income of $66,000. Third, Shaker Heights is a highly educated community with an estimated 61% of the residents over 25 years old holding at least a bachelor's degree. The presence of these three elements, which are traditionally used to explain the achievement gap, adds a perplexing dynamic to the research contained in this book.

The gap in academic achievement between Black and White students in Shaker Heights led to the fundamental question that guided this research: Why do Black students, who seemingly have the appropriate conditions of life that should lead to academic success, still perform far below their White counterparts? Interestingly, the academic performance of Blacks in Shaker Heights was above the state and national average for Black students.

For several years, I lived in South Euclid, a lower middle- to upper middle-class, stably racially integrated suburb not too far from Shaker Heights. There was the same gap between black students and white students, with special programs at the high school targeted specifically towards black students to ensure they graduate.

TL/DR: the district didn't succumb to the soft bigotry of low expectations.

Meanwhile, district officials, led by Superintendent Bill Zelei, refused to let daunting national trends discourage them. Half of black male students drop out anyway. Why bother trying? They didn't ship the new arrivals to special ed or let them coast in dumbed-down classes. They didn't pull money out of the high school and into majority-white elementary schools. They kept the honors courses, the Japanese language instruction, the art classes, and the drama club.

Interesting hypothesis. There's also Thomas Sowell's book which argues that Black Americans inherited the old South's backward and violent culture of honor. I could see your suggestion fitting pretty nicely into that framework as well.

EDIT:

> Poor white people sit in their trailer parks smoking meth, not conspiring to kill a guy for not respecting them.

Piggybacking on my previous thought a little. It's worth noting that, actually, whites (poor or not) did conspire to kill guys for not respecting them. But it was primarily a feature of Southern culture (think: Hatfield and McCoys and The Caning of Charles Sumner) in bygone centuries. This phenomenon was is mentioned in Gladwell's Outliers. Interestingly there is an apparent modern artifact. Namely Southern men were found to have significantly heightened responses to perceived insults. You can read more about it here: http://gladwell.com/outliers/harlan-kentucky/

So, it may be that there's a slow cultural pacification process taking place. Maybe the most violent people are/have-been removing themselves from the planet. Maybe wider norms in America are showing that it's okay to not be violent. Maybe Sowell is on to something.

Sexplanations is a great channel and I'm so excited to see Dr. Doe make a video about Disability and Sex. It's a pretty giant overview, but hits a lot of important points that are applicable to CFS. This is a topic that's come up repeatedly on the chat groups and I thought it might be nice to bring here.

I especially liked her clarification that people with disabilities can be gay/straight/bi/poly/trans/asexual/kinky/vanilla/whatever - that sexuality is not defined by disability. As I've gotten to know people from this community (r/cfs) I've met people with many different sexual orientations and preferences.

Dr. Doe also talks about how people with disabilities are often desexualized which is something I certainly found as I got sicker.

And I appreciated her mention that some people fetishize disabilities in a harmful way. When I first started dating post-cfs I found this quite a bit (ick!)

I wish she had talked a little bit more about tactics for us to work around our physical limitations in our love lives. I've found this community very helpful in that area but haven't seen it talked about publicly very much. Perhaps in a future video.

----
As an aside, the book that Dr. Doe recommends at 5:50 (The Ultimate Guide to Sex and Disability) was actually shown to me by someone on here a while back. It's a good book and does a nice job of including energy disabilities. If you're starting to figure out how sexuality/dating/sex works with CFS it's worth checking out.

I'm having some issues finding information on desegregation experiences in schools (USA, particularly private schools in the north-east).

This article is the best one I've found so far. As far as books go, I read Going to School in Black & White but it wasn't really what I was expecting. So You Want To Talk About Race was an excellent (if not always enjoyable) read though. I've also read a few general books on the civil rights movement, and more articles/blog posts than I can name.

Also looking for books about "The Stanley Plan" in Virginia.

Would anyone be able to point me towards some more resources? I'll take anything really: timelines, anecdotes, books/biographies or speculation (just label it as such). I'm also looking for information from both perspectives (white vs PoC)... and I'm aiming for realism, not happy go-lucky unicorns that fart rainbows. There is a reason that (it seems like) a lot of the first PoC admitted to previously white schools transferred out after all, and while I can make some guesses about the reasoning that's all it would be.

For background -

>!This is for a Harry Potter -ish story set at Ilvermorny during the 60s, with the assumption that Rappaport's Law essentially banned muggle-borns from the school until it's repeal in '65, and discrimination is a pretty big theme. A lot of it revolves around the whole blood purity thing, the racism that those muggle-born kids learned from society/parents and how those things interact. Also: the squib marches, voldemort's rise and first wizarding war from a foreign perspective, the civil rights movement and how that effects MACUSA's policies, and so on. Yes, the story spans a few years :D!<

Killing the Black Body: Race, Reproduction, and the Meaning of Liberty by Dorothy Roberts.

I picked up the book (but haven't read it yet) when I was reading for my Critical Narrative Theory class and found this in a footnote:

"In one study where "the rate of positive results for [substance abuse by] white [pregnant] women (15.4 percent) was slightly higher than that for Black women (14.1 percent)," black women were nonetheless "ten times more likely than whites to be reported to the government authorities"

This, of course, after the revelation (also from Brown's book) that:

"it has been legally accepted for the state to remove to protective custody the infants of black cocaine addicts but not babies born to white well-to-do alcoholics, even though 'injury to a fetus from excessive alcohol far exceeds the harm from crack exposure'"

Anyway, as a feminist and a scholar interested in Critical Race Theory it seemed right up my alley. I have a sneaking suspicion this would be the right crowd for this book. And I really, really need an excuse to read it.

>Spoils system dates from 1830, and if you saying "as currently practiced" AND using spoils system as an argument against it is acknowledgement that both today's version of democracy and yesterday's version of democracy is flawed then I can easily infer that democracy is intrinsically flawed.

No argument from me on that front. All forms of governance are intrinsically flawed. To think that we can devise an ideal system that applies across all time and space is a fool's errand.

>It is not.. If anything, this demonstrates that social inequalities cannot be amended through social policies. Meritocracy is by definition a system which promotes stark inequality....(snip)

Meritocracy is generally thought to be linked to social mobility. I can't say I've read Clark's book, though it does look interesting. Perhaps I will put it on my to read list, with the caveat that said list is already fairly long. I'm not so sure about using surnames as a way to trace mobility, though. In any case, this skirts the point that hereditary aristocracies prohibit any mobility to the top echelons of power. But if meritocracy by definition promotes "stark inequality," there is no way to debate this point. You have just defined it to be true -- it is circular.

>Aristocracy may be incompatible with meritocracy in the practical sense, but it is compatible in the theoretical sense.

Great, so aristocracy is not meritocratic in the real world. State socialism sounded great on paper too, until Stalin and co. showed up on the scene.

>Furthermore, hereditary aristocracies are not refuted, but instead confirmed, by the increasing insight in what constitutes intelligence and how it is heritable by people such as Clark and Wade (and the infamous Bell Curve).

First, see my comment above on the misuse of heritability figures. I will not comment further on Clark since I am not familiar with the book. As far as Wade goes, I can't say I've read that either. However, H. Allen Orr, a biologist I find to be trustworthy in his reviews, has written a fairly negative review of the book. I think the most important point in there is that Wade himself notes that his work in the second half of the book is built on speculation and is not backed by hard evidence. As for Herrnstein and Murray, I have read that one (granted, a long time ago), but it has been dissected in numerous books and an APA task force, so I won't flagellate that dead horse into a bloody pulp.

But, none of this is even relevant if you admit that aristocracy and meritocracy are incompatible in "the practical sense." This seems obvious from how well our allegedly hyper-intelligent inbred aristocratic overlords governed in the Medieval and early modern periods. So you can have your theoretical debates about the magic of monarchy, I won't begrudge you that. But this debate seems increasingly pointless.

If I was going to provide someone with a list of books that best expressed my current thinking on the Political Economy these would be my top ones:

  1. The Law - While over a century old this books stands as the perfect intro to the ideas of Classical Liberalism. When you understand the core message of this book you understand why people oppose so many aspects of government action.
  2. Seeing Like A State - The idea that society can be rebuilt from the top down is well demolished in this dense but important read. The concept of Legibility was a game changer for my brain.
  3. Stubborn Attachments - This books presents a compelling philosophical argument for the importance of economic growth. It's hard to overstate how important getting the balance of economic growth vs other considerations actually is.
  4. The Breakdown of Nations - A classic text on why the trend toward "bigger" isn't a good thing. While various nits can be picked with this book I think its general thesis is holding up well in our increasingly bifurcated age.
  5. The Joy of Freedom - Lots of books, many objectively better, could have gone here but this book was my personal pivot point which sent me away from Socialism and towards capitalism. This introduction to "Libertarian Capitalism" is a bit dated now but it was powerful.

There are, of course many more books that could go on this list. But the above list is a good sampling of my personal philosophy of political economy. It is not meant as a list of books to change your mind but simply as a list of books that are descriptive of my current belief that we should be orientated towards high (sustainable) economic growth & more decentralization.

    Some honorable mentions:

As a self proclaimed "Libertarian Crunchy Con" I have to add The Quest for Community & Crunchy Cons

The book The Fourth Economy fundamentally changed my professional direction in life.

Anti-Fragile was another book full of mind blowing ideas and shifted my approach to many things.

The End of Jobs is a great combination of The Fourth Economy & Anti-Fragile (among other concepts) into a more real-world useful set of ideas.

Markets Not Capitalism is a powerful reminder that it is not Capitalism per se that is important but the transformational power of markets that need be unleashed.

You will note that I left out pure economic books, this was on purpose. There are tons of good intro to econ type books and any non-trained economist should read a bunch from a bunch of different perspectives. With that said I am currently working my way through the book Choice and if it stays as good as it has started that will probably get added to my core list.

So many more I could I list like The Left, The Right, & The State or The Problem of Political Authority and on it goes...
I am still looking for a "manifesto" of sorts for the broad movement towards decentralization (I have a few possibilities on my 'to read list') so if you know of any that might fit that description let me know.

Colorblind racism is a researched concept itself, you can read more about it here in lay terms or the actual scholarship here.

I also don't see them defining racism so much as explaining how they chose to measure racist attitudes given their data set. In academic settings racism is almost always defined as systemic, rather than your definition.

To answer your other questions, they likely rescaled variables to make the data easier to interpret and/or compare. To account for the oversampling, they used propensity score weights, which you can read about here.

That’s what I’m saying. The laws don’t explicitly target Black people but they disproportionately affect Black people. It’s like what GOP strategist Lee Atwater said:

>Y'all don't quote me on this. You start out in 1954 by saying, "Nigger, nigger, nigger." By 1968 you can't say "nigger" — that hurts you. Backfires. So you say stuff like forced busing, states' rights and all that stuff. You're getting so abstract now [that] you're talking about cutting taxes, and all these things you're talking about are totally economic things and a byproduct of them is [that] blacks get hurt worse than whites. And subconsciously maybe that is part of it. I'm not saying that. But I'm saying that if it is getting that abstract, and that coded, that we are doing away with the racial problem one way or the other. You follow me — because obviously sitting around saying, "We want to cut this," is much more abstract than even the busing thing, and a hell of a lot more abstract than "Nigger, nigger."

Bonilla-Silva has discussed this in Racism Without Racists, terming it “color-blind racism.” And Bobo et al have called it “laissez-faire racism”. And, of course, Michelle Alexander’s The New Jim Crow is popular as well on the topic. If you don’t want to read a book or article, Ava DuVernay’s Netflix film 13th is insightful too. Examples abound. Take a look at the disparity in sentencing between crack cocaine and powder cocaine. They’re essentially the same drug, but the former is more likely to be found in Black communities and the latter is more likely to be found in white ones, but the former has much harsher penalties. Or look at sentencing for marijuana. Surveys show that white and Black people use and sell it at the same rate, but Black people are put in jail for marijuana offenses at a rate of 20 to 50 times more than white people. So I’d point to the example of the war on drugs, mass incarceration, and broken-windows policing as ways that racism has evolved.

Note he immediately points out not only that things aren’t equal or just, but also that there’s no reason one should expect equality, nor that we should expect everyone to behave morally. That’s specifically what I was responding to re. your post.

The Soul of Man Under Socialism by Oscar Wilde -- an introduction to libertarian socialism, a foreign topic to most people ("isn't that, like, an oxymoron?") but pretty rewarding and interesting once you get into it.

If you care about current events (and this one is highly important), you can read about what's going on in Rojava, in Northern Syria. To understand the character of what they're doing there and their social revolution you can read Murray Bookchin and Abdullah Ocalan. They've both written a lot but it doesn't take much to understand the gist of their ideas and, more importantly, how they're being applied right now in Rojava. Democratic confederalism is the name of the specific system at work in Rojava.

Books I can recommend that have to do with the above:

A Small Key Can Open A Large Door: Rojava Revolution

Rojava: An Alternative to Imperialism, Nationalism, and Islamism in the Middle East

To Dare Imagining: Rojava Revolution

Revolution in Rojava: Democratic Autonomy and Women's Liberation in Syrian Kurdistan

Most everything on this list

War and Peace in Kurdistan

Democratic Confederalism

Obviously that's a fairly dense list. You don't have to read all those. But I do suggest you at least look into Rojava and the ideology behind it on a basic level, as in my opinion it's one of the most important developments in the world right now and it's fascinating to see the application of democratic confederalism, autonomous self-organization, ethnic and religious plurality, and women's liberation on such an impressive scale.

On the topic of movies, it just so happens that there are a number of Rojava documentaries which might help you gain a basic understanding of what it's like there. You can find plenty by looking up "Rojava documentary". Here's a good one. This is the most recent, I believe.

Good studies!

Klingt für mich wie eine Wunschwelt.
"Es soll allen gut gehen".
"Jeder soll freie Bildung haben!"

Und wie will man so etwas machen?
"Keine Ahnung"

Sowell also talks a lot about the subject in his autobiography-- and he has a really good perspective on this as a black man who grew up in Harlem, became a Marxist, studied economics, and then later became fiscally conservative after working at the labor department and realizing that they actually didn't want him to prove the truth about the minimum wage due to the political implications: https://www.amazon.com/Personal-Odyssey-Thomas-Sowell/dp/0684864657

I can't really help your internal qualms but I can suggest books that might help.

Sociology undergrad here. Went through a huge anti-racist-militant phase and now I'm still that but covert. The most crucial problem a lot of PoC have with racism is that they have no words or dictation to find out what exactly is bothering them. Racism is carefully crafted that way to be. It's pedantic, however, to argue whether or not that is purposefully done or not. We can acknowledge that it's a product of racism (the inability to have a dialogue about it).

THE BOOKS

Racism without Racists: Color-Blind Racism and the Persistence of Racial Inequality in America

  • This will probably resonate the most with you because it's the more frequent amount of racism we experience. It's a different critique because instead of addressing the right's racism, it addresses the left's supposedly openness and diversity.

    The New Jim Crow

  • This book was written by a lawyer who first completely dismissed the idea that there was still a racial caste system in the U.S. However, her research told her otherwise as she investigated the ways that the 5th amendment was violated on a federal level, how prison populations are used for manual labor at low pay that equates to a modern day-covert form of slavery, and how prison populations count as 2/3rds or 3/5ths a person for a state's population.

Dog Whistle Politics: How Coded Racial Appeals Have Reinvented Racism and Wrecked the Middle Class

  • This approaches racism in how it's affected and formed our modern day political institutions. It talks about how politicians use racism to convince white voters to vote against their own best interests.

Ain't No Makin' It: Aspirations and Attainment in a Low-Income Neighborhood, 3rd Edition

  • This book was written by a Catholic priest who followed two groups of poor income boys; one group was majority white and one group was majority black. It's both a academic and personal account of his observations on how these boys grew up over three decades. An incredible longitudinal study that is both objective and genuine.

If you're serious about understanding race and ethnic relations, you'll read tese books. If you need any advice on starter chapters I have a few.

Thomas Sowell, probably the greatest black intellectual alive today has been saying as much for a long time. And of course I doubt whites have more sensible political opinions, the only difference is that blacks have an easier time asking for handouts and special treatment (even if in reality it harms them more than help), whites would do the same stupid things if they could.

Race and Culture: A World View and Black Rednecks and White Liberals are two great books by Thomas Sowell on the subject.

Of course, in the current climate of political correctness paranoia, anything that can in any way be interpreted as criticism of a 'minority' is not acceptable, whatever it is true or not.

u/BTC_Brin · 4 pointsr/Firearms

Actually, it isn't classism so much as a statement on culture, and an acknowledgement of the economic consequences thereof.

I suggest you read Thomas Sowell's book "Black Rednecks and White Liberals.": it does an excellent job of explaining how bad culture can act to prevent upward social mobility.

u/maddata · 3 pointsr/PoliticalDiscussion

Couldn't possibly have been that the only time "the klu klux klan" was mentioned in the tapper interview occurred during crosstalk ^^primary ^^sources ^^op which might have made it difficult to hear that part. Which couldn't possibly be one of the things Trump mentions afterwards?

> I could hardly hear what he's saying. I hear various groups. I don't mind disavowing anyone. I disavowed Duke the day before at a major conference

The last part sort of raising the question as to why the media needs to keep asking him to disavow when he's already disavowed.

But of course, courting the racist vote, a staggering .2% of the GP is a good strategy, and that's why Trump's whistling at dogs all day, because by only dog whistling, nobody would pick up on it (what's the point of a dog whistle, amirite?) and therefore the majority of people who dislike racists and racism wouldn't be exposed to the idea that Trump is a racist.

An idea that couldn't possibly be lazily applied to every. republican. candidate. ever.?

Because, you know, every republican candidate is hitler.

u/bantham · 3 pointsr/fffffffuuuuuuuuuuuu

Interestingly enough, there are those who advance the idea that "black culture" is derived from redneck culture.

You would be interested in reading Black rednecks and White liberals by Thomas Sowell.

u/XOmniverse · 3 pointsr/JordanPeterson

In Black Rednecks and White Liberals, Thomas Sowell puts forward a pretty convincing case that the cause is that the Jews often played the role of a "middle man minority", which is to say, when they entered a culture or a society, they tended to enter into professions in which they are middle men (bankers, lawyers, etc.) rather than directly producing goods and services. Since people don't intuitively understand how such professions add genuine value, the money obtained through them was perceived as unfair rent seeking rather than genuinely earned.

Ah the famous tale of sterilizing Ethiopians: as Wikipedia can show you, "there was no plan to deliberately reduce the birth rates of Ethiopian Jews, and there was no evidence of coercion". More about it here:

https://www.haaretz.com/.premium-allison-kaplan-sommer-ethiopian-smear-1.5227568

Furthermore if you really think Ethiopians are more discriminated in Israel than blacks in the US for example, I suggest you look at the following links:

https://www.forbesafrica.com/woman/2017/10/18/israel-home-home-ethiopian/

https://youtu.be/EgG6jCwnd48

http://m.jpost.com/Israel-News/Ethiopian-Lt-Colonel-makes-IDF-history-473268

Those Ethiopians look so much oppressed, don't they? I really like your statement about if America did this people would go crazy, I suggest you read this book :

https://www.amazon.com/Killing-Black-Body-Reproduction-Meaning/dp/0679758690

"From slave masters’ economic stake in bonded women’s fertility to government programs that coerced thousands of poor Black women into being sterilized as late as the 1970s, these abuses pointed to the degradation of Black motherhood—and the exclusion of Black women’s reproductive needs in mainstream feminist and civil rights agendas"

Finally, you don't get to decide to reinvent the definition of ethnic cleaning or massacre, which is not even close to what the Palestinian people have been through.

If you want to have different opinions if there really was an ethnic cleansing in 1948 or not, I suggest you take a look here where the answers are the most balance, and you will maybe learn that there was indeed a tentative of ethnic cleaning but not the one you think:

Let me give you some free advice.

Know who has it harder than white males when it comes to fighting quotas and taking a hit on admissions or employment because of their race? It’s Asian males. They get all the shit of being a minority, but none of the benefits.

The government considers them a minority (which they are), but not an under-represented minority, so they don’t get into the quotas. Asian females don’t get the race quota either, but they get the gender quota, so they are better off.

Lots of people have done studies and found this to be the case. For example, these folks did a study and published a book about it. Here’s a chart from their book. Compared to white males as the baseline, blacks get an equivalent of 130 free SAT points when it comes to admission to elite schools. That is, a white student would need 130 more SAT points than the black student to have the same chance of admission. But guess where Asians place? They suffer a penalty of 140 points relative to whites, and 270 points relative to blacks. To have the same chance for admission as a white student, an Asian needs to have a SAT score 140 points higher than whites. Talk about race-based discrimination, these guys get the short end of the stick.

This is why when someone says “OMG! Everyone is sexist and racist to white males!” but forgets to mention Asian males, it comes across as racist/sexist whining. If you were really concerned about fairness, why the fuck would you omit the class that has it even worse than you? They never even had “white privilege” in the country, so what past sins of their forefathers are they paying for?

I don’t mean to offend, I am offering some genuine, well-intentioned advice. When you say something like “poor persecuted white males, we’re the new lowest rung on the discrimination ladder”, people realize that this isn’t true, so you’re not seen as championing fairness or equality, you’re seen as fighting for the white male privilege you once enjoyed and lost. You come across as a racist and sexist.

I don’t ask you to take the “white” out of the picture. By all means say “white”, but if you were to modify your statement to “Asian and white males face the heaviest discrimination from society these days”, not only would you be more truthful, people would also have a harder time calling you racist. Because hey, you’re not just fighting for your own sex and race, you’re fighting against the system of treating people unfairly.

I highly recommend this even if you are a racist/sexist fuckwad who hates everyone else. It’s just good politics. It makes your case stronger.

Koggit is being downvoted, but his statement is backed up by research. There was an article in the Boston Globe not too long ago about this and an entire book about admission practices called No Longer Separate, Not Yet Equal.

There's a great deal of evidence that suggests if the admission system were entirely merit-based, Asian Americans would be present in even greater proportion in the country's ivy league schools. And there's strong evidence that schools are selecting against this outcome.

No problem, man.

If you don’t know about what’s going on in Rojava, I understand how you wouldn’t see the significance of the fight in Rojava.

It’s not just about some individuals fighting for their lives. It’s about a progressive model for how to organize society along anarchist thinking, living equally and ecologically. And out of all the places in the world, this begins in war-torn Syria!

I recommend you do your own research. But here’s a Rolling Stone article about the the western anarchists who joined the fight , which explains a bit of the context. I recall it was an easy read.

If you’re looking for a more academic account and
a more thorough analysis from a societal perspective, I can recommend Revolution in Rojava: Democratic Autonomy and Women's Liberation in Syrian Kurdistan.

Edit: Wanted to add that these people are fighting an important fight, probably the most important fight in the world right now.

u/William_DuBane · 2 pointsr/conspiracy

Absolutely. Any time you want confirmation of a statement, just ask.

Harvard professor of political science Robert D. Putnam conducted a nearly decade long study how multiculturalism affects social trust. He surveyed 26,200 people in 40 American communities, finding that–when the data were adjusted for class income and other factors–the more racially diverse a community is, the greater the loss of trust. People in diverse communities “don’t trust the local mayor, they don't trust the local paper, they don't trust other people and they don’t trust institutions,” writes Putnam. In the presence of such ethnic diversity, Putnam maintains that “…we hunker down. We act like turtles. The effect of diversity is worse than had been imagined. And it’s not just that we don’t trust people who are not like us. In diverse communities, we don’t trust people who do look like us.

Even Halyard knows this is all a pile of “feel good” shit. Like a religion, it relies on persecuting those who don’t agree to keep itself mainstream thought.

After the study was released, Putnam was intimidated and harassed because he was accused of helping racists. He later came out and gave a very vague statement saying diversity “had problems but was worth it in the long run” to keep these morons appeased. This statement gives no indication of the “long run” and, in fact, is not quantified by anything.

http://onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1111/j.1467-9477.2007.00176.x/abstract

~:~

According to conflict theory, distrust between ethnic groups rises with diversity, but not within a group. Putnam describes people of all races and socioeconomic statuses, ages, and both sexes as “hunkering down,” avoiding engagement with their local community–both among different ethnic groups and within their own ethnic group. Even when controlling for income inequality and crime rates–two factors which conflict theory states should be the prime causal factors in declining interethnic group trust–more diversity is still associated with less communal trust.

although you're making a good and important point, you should probably check the misogyny in your post too.

men also play a role in creating a child. therefore they should also play a role in raising the child. their intelligence, capability, and stability should be questioned, as well. it takes two people. women don't get pregnant all by themselves.

moreover, when talking about addictions that women may have you ignore the fact that there is a small time frame in which the women would have to achieve sobriety. in many cases, inadequate prenatal health care availability and drug treatment facilities that even accept pregnant women are few (and likely expensive). i highly doubt most women want to continue to use drugs while they are pregnant. yet, certain systemic oppression (like race and class) make it extremely difficult for most drug-addicted women to end their addictions during their pregnancy. this of course doesn't excuse drug use, but i think it's more complicated than women simply not caring that their addiction may harm their child.

read this.

Lol I don't have to engage every internet stranger asshole who condescends to me. I'd never get work done. The fact you're quoting the UN at me is concerning though. I know they position themselves as a neutral global mediator, but in practice they function to advance the interests of powerful capitalist countries and their policies. Fuck the United Nations. You have to be a lot more critical of the info coming out of Rojava. It's a warzone, they are communists, and almost every global power has an interest in spinning any news on the conflict. Here's an article that shows an example of the disinfo I'm talking about.

In addition, your understanding of the political power structure is highly reductive. This book is a good place to start (used to be a free version to pirate but I can't find it now). The governing system there is complex and the dynamics are fluid. It's also complicated by an ongoing wartime situation. Democratic Confederalism is a theoretical system being implemented for the first time, and they acknowledge the struggle of transitioning from traditional culture to a progressive one under these conditions. That doesn't mean I'm/they're wrong, it certainly doesn't mean you're right.

Anyway cut that "drink the kool aid / i'm here to teach you something" attitude. There's clearly so much on this situation you don't know, and you're so up your own ass that you thought UN and Wikipedia made you look smart. And then telling me I'm whacking off to party rhetoric when you're endorsing info from the mouthpiece of our global ruling class. Thoughtless.

u/discontinuity · 2 pointsr/Cleveland

Bullet three is exactly backward. Shaker Heights high school used to be ranked in the 90th percentile, but as the mix changed to the one you quote, the Percentage of Students Passing All Four Parts of the Ohio Graduation Test dropped to 67.4%, the high school stopped being one of the most desirable, and white flight has and is occurring.

I agree with you that Clevelanders do NOT fear integrated education, but people value education and will chase these rankings. So if an influx of black students changes a highschool's pass rate, you will see white flight based on the change in status of the highschool. It's also worth noting that the high desirability of these schools is a draw which creates demand for real-estate and as the rankings decline, people will abandon the community as it is a precursor to declining home values, which is where most of the middle-class has the majority of their wealth, exasperating the "white flight" scenario.

There was a Black American Students in An Affluent Suburb: A Study of Academic Disengagement written about the phenomenon.

The author John U. Ogbu was ostricized by the black community because of it.

> Can you give me a source of someone who disproved him and summarize their findings?

Yeah. Just so we're clear, we're talking about Herrnstein & Murray's 1994 book, The Bell Curve. As I'm sure you already know, this book, and its co-author Charles Murray, are among Stefan Molyneux's favorite sources of information about inherited racial differences in IQ.

If you've only heard of The Bell Curve from right-wing pundits, then you may not know that the book generated a brief but intense debate when it was first published. The debate was intense because the authors' claims were controversial. And the debate was brief because everyone quickly realized that the book was trash. The authors probably already knew this, because they declined to publish any of their findings in peer-reviewed journals. In fact, they declined to permit any kind of review prior to the book's publication. In the world of science, this is extraordinarily shady behavior.

As far as I know, The Bell Curve hasn't been in press for at least ten years. Which is a good indication that no one (on the left or the right) cared at all about what Herrnstein and Murray had to say. And that was the state of affairs until a few years ago, when the book's sections on racial differences in IQ seemed to capture the imagination of Stefan Molyneux.

Anyways, for those engaged in the practice of statistics and/or social science, The Bell Curve is infamous as a case study in bad science. The key issues are as follows:

  • General intelligence. Herrstein and Murray's conclusions are based on Spearman's notion of "general intelligence" or g, which dates back to 1904. The science has always been dodgy, and the psychometric validity of g was questioned long before The Bell Curve. Psychologists were already moving toward multi-dimensional models of intelligence by the time the book was written. The best critique of g is probably still Stephen Jay Gould's Mismeasure of Man. The revised edition from 1996 has a couple chapters that directly disprove claims about g made by Herrstein and Murray.

  • Statistical and psychometric methods. Complex data analysis always involves subjective decisions. It's the responsibility of the analyst to provide solid rationale for these decisions. Or in the absence of such rationale, to provide what's known as a "sensitivity analysis" to assess the impact of these decisions. Herrstein and Murray did neither of these. Instead, they analyzed data with arbitrary weighting schemes and with arbitrarily chosen subscores from an aptitude test called the AFQT. And they provided inadequate justification for their choice of weights and subscores. Perhaps unsurprisingly, their findings disappeared when different weights and subscores were used in the same analysis. (That work is documented in this book and in this paper.) These days, we'd call this "p-hacking." And it is a serious breach of scientific ethics.

  • Intellectual laziness. No one disagrees that there are racial differences in IQ. That's obvious from the data. The key issue is whether these differences are due to genetic inheritance, or whether they are due to factors like income, education, and environment. In a rare moment of intellectual honesty, Herrnstein and Murray say: It seems highly likely to us that both genes and the environment have something to do with racial differences. What might the mix be? We are resolutely agnostic on that issue; as far as we can determine, the evidence does not justify an estimate. Which is a nice way of saying "please believe us even though we don't know what we're talking about." That's an acceptable thing to say in some contexts, but not when you're arguing in favor of IQ-based public policy. This quote is taken directly from the book, so I'm not going to provide a link.

During the mid-to-late nineties, a lot of smart people wasted a lot of time disproving nonsense in the The Bell Curve. If you're curious about this stuff, I suppose you could start with this book from 1995.
If you'd like to see a more recent genomics-based disproof of some of Herrstein and Murray's claims, here is a paper from three years ago. The upshot is that there is way more science opposed to the book than in favor of it. And this would be obvious to any "intellectual" who took a moment to learn about his or her sources. Of course I'm referring specifically to Stefan Molyneux, who has no reservations about accepting The Bell Curve at face value, despite the fact that it is full of outdated science, bad statistics, and sheer fantasy.

Now do you understand why I question anyone who takes The Bell Curve seriously?

>Hillary Clinton was the only person from a list of possible Presidential nominees with such a low approval rating as Trump - Joe Biden and Bernie Sanders are closer to 50% than 30%, unlike Trump.

It's easy to be popular when you aren't in the public eye. democrats as a whole have a lower approval than trump, which is what matters now.

>There's something about the way that Trump talks and acts that puts off more Americans than are usually put off by Republican Presidents - there are a whole host of statistics showing that people find Trump to be very untrustworthy, etc.

I dislike repeating myself, please read and respond to what I actually say. To repeat, "and so are his democratic opponents. approval for everyone is down, clearly something more substantial than trump is at work."

>The tax cuts passed in part because that's one of the main Republican ideas that they all agree on. I'd say the ACA repeal could've happened under Pence, because he's more steeped in the nuances and negotiations of such bills than Trump.

In other words, "trump should resign because pence is better and I know this because I think pence is better". You are assuming the thing you are supposed to be trying to prove, please stop.

>Also, with Trump capable of attacking any bill that comes out, and thus turning his base, and thus, the Republican base, against the ideas, the Republicans have seemed far less willing to push for or compromise with Democrats on various issues. Less likely to agree with Democrats on basic facts, to pass bills like DACA which have an 80% approval rating among the people, etc.

Polling on issues like this is meaningless. People like DACA they also like the idea of deporting illegals and lower immigration. the population is schizophrenic, and there's no idea that can't poll 60+ percent support. Pointing this out proves nothing.

>The tax cuts had almost nothing to do with Trump -

The people involved thought differently, but I'm sure you know better than them, right?

>The book is gossipy, and lacks verifiability, but several news outlets have managed to get certain details, such as the idea that Trump had all his briefings cut down to one page, because he hated reading too much,

That, or he's a wharton MBA and MBAs are literally taught to do that sort of thing as standard practice. But why read basic management books when you can just assume something shity about trump, right?

>What do you feel are the Democratic attacks that are the most baseless and damaging towards Trump, that actually had an impact on policymaking?

Where to begin? You've not made a single, verifiable claim about policy anywhere in what you have said. Not one.

>They're playing a partisan role, partially, but I think that Trump himself has some characteristics that are upsetting many parts of the country, and the Democrats are simply playing on those characteristics more, now.

He has one characteristic, an R by his name. That's enough.

>Pence would never say stuff that divides the country, at least, not as much as Trump does.

Again, you can't just assume the thing you are trying to rpove.

>The fact is, Republican approval of the NFL plummeted, shortly after Trump's attacks on the anthem protesters. And the drop in viewership this year is a few points higher than usual.

No, this isn't a fact. the fact is that NFL ratings have been falling for years. Please don't just make shit up.

>Pence wouldn't attack private institutions like that, nor would he cause such a divide and rancor in the country, which only energizes his opponents, and makes it harder for the Democrats to compromise with him, without appeasing the demands of their base.

Why on earth would you assume this?

>I don't know any prominent Republican politician who has been credibly accused of being a racist.

Yes you do, every single one, without exception. If you truly don't see this, then you need to get your head out of the sand. Democrats accuse every republican of the slightest importance of being racist every chance they get. THAT is what has poisoned the well of public discourse, not trump. Trump is a consequence of the things you are accusing him of, not a cause.

u/sammayylmao · 2 pointsr/unpopularopinion

I agree with you to a degree. There is a paper called "color blind racism" that explains in America how society is systemically keep the rich, rich and the poor, poor. It is racism that doesn't target minorities (sounds weird right?). It does historically affect non Caucasians to a greater degree. Being poor in this country sucks because the rich keep you there. But being a minority and poor is still measureably worse.

I just finished The New Jim Crow.

I was really expecting it to be much more slanted than it was. A few parts blew my mind -- especially that bit about the "war on drugs" having been thrust onto the public prior to the point that drug abuse was actually becoming a problem. Overall though, it really provides a vastly wider perspective whitewashed from most high school history classes and I cannot recommend it enough to understanding race relations in America.

I read this in conjunction with Racism without Racists: Color-Blind Racism and the Persistence of Racial Inequality in America . There was some overlap but both informed the other. I'd recommend if interested in the topic of race relations specifically; though I'd recommend Michelle Alexander's book to everyone -- regardless of interest level.

u/palagoon · 2 pointsr/AskReddit

I understand what you're saying completely, but I hope one day you can see that the reason this stuff happens is not because "black people are bad people" but rather "white people made black people bad people."

That's a pretty big claim to make, so let me explain myself.

From the moment we (I say we because I'm white) brought blacks over to be used as slaves, we stripped them of everything that they could be proud of. We took their tribal names, their tribal religions and customs, and put them at the absolute bottom of society with no way out.

When slavery ended, discrimination didn't. Jim Crow laws are something everyone knows about, but throughout the country, if you were black you were likely illiterate and poor because the education system for blacks just was not up to par. Additionally black workers (even skilled ones) had trouble finding work all over the country because no one wanted to risk hiring a "Negro" and having all the white workers get their panties in a bunch.

So in the 150 years since slavery ended we've slowly eroded away at the massive systems of inequality that placed and kept blacks at the bottom of society, but it hasn't been enough. Segregation might be over, but inner city schools are predominantly black and underfunded (because all the whites left and property values tanked leading to robber baron landlords buying up all the property to make a quick buck). The system is still heavily rigged against blacks.

And so what does it mean to be black in America? Especially if you're not one of the lucky few who can call themselves "Middle Class"? You grow up surrounded by other poor black folks, you learn very quickly that [White] society doesn't give a fuck about your or your family and you have to deal with the cognitive dissonance of being on welfare while the country calls you lazy and unmotivated and accuses you of stealing from the hardworking [White] citizens of the country.

It's hard. No one ever offers you a break, no one ever lets you cut a corner. Instead, society continually puts up barriers to your success (some mentioned above, some not), and so you grow to distrust the rest of [White] society, and you don't care about the system, and you're just going to take what you want because that's what the system has been doing to you for 300 years.

Does that excuse the behavior of people like the woman you talk about in your story? No, it absolutely doesn't. But these people aren't out to get you, per se, it's just something they've been trained to do by their peers and their families and implicitly by a society that repeatedly says "We don't care about you, you are scum and worthless."

I worked for the better part of a year in a low-pay part-time job where I was the only white person and the only person with a college degree; most people I worked with had several felonies and most didn't finish high school. It was rough and it was a big adjustment period for me (I transferred when I moved, the division that I worked for in my old place of residence was staffed by college students and retirees looking for a distraction).

But you know what? Over time, I became friends with a lot of these gang-banger types. I watched them do drugs on the clock, I had to cover a shift more than once because someone just didn't come to work (because they were still out partying from the night before, they couldn't get a ride to work, or just didn't want to go), and to this day I have nothing in common with any of them.

But I didn't judge them for the color of their skin. I listened when they talked. I heard a story from a co-worker (now a small-time molly pusher at the local clubs) about how he slept on the floor his whole childhood because he was the oldest of five kids, and the one bed they had only had room for the four youngest kids. He has screwed up and been in jail more than once in his life, but he's an okay guy overall.

But you know what? I also worked with his younger brother (one of the lucky four to have a bed), and he has a high school diploma, he's got some college classes under his belt, and he's got a good music career going such that he opens for all the big Hip Hop acts that come through our town. Maybe he hasn't quite made it yet, either, but I like to think that for all the shit his brother went through, he has more of a chance to make it because of it.

It's not easy being black in America. In fact, it downright sucks. There are a lot of shitty poor black people in America because society has pushed them into ghettos for the better part of the last 150 years.

Geez, I don't have the source completely handy, but I know it is referenced in Eduardo Bonilla-Silva's "Racism Without Racists" Amazon Link ...anyway, some Social Scientist determined that if all the institutional barriers that hold blacks down were instantly removed, it would take something like another 80 years to fully achieve equality between races.

TLDR - I don't blame your for your attitudes towards blacks at all, and it's not even wrong to say that your views of poor black people are correct, BUT there are a whole lot of reasons as to WHY this is the case, and acknowledging these reasons may actually get us to a point where something positive happens.

>My statement about the field studies was in response to you when you said that people don't know from anecdotal evidence that we're all the same. According to you, this can only be learned from "studying the field". So, you're claiming that Ethnic Studies is useless by your own standards because it doesn't study the field?

When you said "we're all the same" I was assuming you were referring to genetics (which isn't entirely, but mostly true). With regards to culture, history, and levels of discrimination, we're very different, but the white perspective is what gets expressed broadly in culture. In addition, it's inculcated by the idea of "colorblindness" which is in itself a form of racism. Here's an article that says as much although the book's much better.

> What does this matter to the kids who are studying? If we want more minorities with great educations, have them spend less time working on PC perfection and more time studying the subjects at hand.

That is what we currently do. No one's saying don't teach kids math, US history, English etc. That's what our culture and educational system demands, and so it would be a disservice not to educate kids. However, does it seem to be working that well? Our schools are the most segregated they've been since Jim Crow ended. As I stated in my post, I'm not arguing we replace anything, and as the districts that now have ethnic studies have shown, you don't have to.

> Combine that with the fact that minority communities tend to be uneducated and poor for some reason, this leads to yet another decrease in the chances of minorities leading the field in a certain subject.

Are you ok with this? If so, then I don't know why we're having this discussion because I'm guessing there's nothing I can say that will change your mind. Education is literally the main conduit out of poverty in this country. Your level of education does more to predict your income, your chances of staying out of prison, and your lifespan than any other factor for people of color.

> You seem to speak from a position of a "white privilege apologetic". It's true that I'm lucky to be where I am, but that doesn't change the validity of what I claim

No, I speak from a platform of white privilege. Unequivocally. And I don't apologize for anything. I just try and stand up for what's right.

u/Snow_Mandalorian · 2 pointsr/pcgaming

Well, here's a good resource on the science behind implicit biases:Blindspot: Hidden Biases of Good People. Notice that this isn't even critical theory, this is simply social science research demonstrating how otherwise good and moral people can inherit biases, racist/sexist/or what have you, without knowing they possess these biases.

Feminist critiques of video game culture take this kind of research for granted. It's something we've known about for a long time. We can then build off of that and point out what the gender biases in video game culture are. When a feminist criticises video game culture, she is not implying that video gamers by and large are all sexist pigs who think women should go back to the kitchen. Feminists are criticising the implicit biases that we don't even realize we have that portray women in sexist ways, sexist imagery we don't even recognize as sexist.
When the majority of PC gamers react to feminists, they react to the idea that feminists are calling them all sexist pigs. And this reaction stems from an ignorance of what feminists are actually saying. And when this kind of ignorance gets passed around in a circle jerk fashion like on this subreddit, you can probably start to understand why those of us who do read this stuff get so damn angered and venomous in our tone.

Another great resource is racism without racists. Same general idea. How many of us have inherited racist attitudes and values without ever even realizing it. And we can test for these racist attitudes with some rather sophisticated techniques available in the social sciences.

That's where I'm coming from. I apologize for my tone.

u/smischmal · 2 pointsr/radicalqueers

I haven't read any really academic type stuff, but I have read some pretty great books of a radically queer nature.

I just finished reading From Transgender to Transhuman: A Manifesto on the Freedom of Form and would highly recommend it. However, definitely go for the hard copy rather than the kindle version, as the etext is marred with formatting issues. In this expanded second edition of The Apartheid of Sex, she advocates an end to the legal separation of people based on genitals as well as even cooler things in the future as technology further erodes the reason for divisions between people based on genitals, or even social roles or meat/non-meat status. Her experience as a lawyer really shows in her ability to make concise, effective arguments for her points.

I would also suggest Whipping Girl by Julia Serano. I don't know if it's really that radical, but her understanding and explanation of sexism and it's impact on all people is pretty damn awesome in my opinion.

Also, for a more pot pourri style smattering of essays and such, I'd recommend GENDERqUEER, voices from beyond the sexual binary and Gender Outlaws: The Next Generation.

This is a strange understanding of history imo. We should strive to be better historians. The word slave literally comes from the word slav. White people have also been enslaved and oppressed since the beginning of time as well. Even as recently as the 19th century white people were being enslaved during the barbary wars. If you want to look at the Arab slave trade it dwarfs that of the western / american slave trade and is still going on today. If the logic is that white people have been oppressing people of color more than people of color oppressing each other its just simply not true. Historically european and american whites were actually involved in the chantal / race based slave trade for the least amount of time than other groups and white puritans were the reason slavery started to become abolished. /u/Kayddps check out Black Rednecks & White Liberals by Thomas Sowell (A black economist and historian). Evidence shows the differences in academic aptitudes among races are so small as to be negligible. The same is true about gender where females tend to be very slightly better at some tasks on average ... but who cares. It's negligible on average and says nothing about any individual.

The problems with inner city schools that you mention are primarily socio-economic and also cultural (see Shaker Heights: https://www.amazon.com/Black-American-Students-Affluent-Suburb/dp/080584516X ), not genetic.

I didn't realize I had to do your homework for you. This was the top result of a google search for "shaker heights sociology study schools". When I saw this study last it was in article format but I am not surprised the author wrote a book about it.

Anyways, you are remembering the study incorrectly. It was a study of middle class black families in comparison to middle class whites within the same community. He found that the white parents were significantly more likely to preach the value of education and homework and hold their children responsible when they performed poorly academically, whereas the reverse was true with the black parents. They did little to reinforce the importance of school or homework and blamed the teachers/schools when their children did poorly. So yes, actually, it addresses this point directly.

Look, I do not care to "convert" you. I couldn't care less if you believe what I am saying. The link to the book is of zero help to you as you are not going to order it and read it and you have demonstrated an unwillingness to search for any evidence that is contrary to your claim (unless it is spoon fed to you), so what do you want? I agree with you on two points:

  1. The condition blacks are in today is due in large part to being enslaved for ~100 years, then being subject to institutional racism for another ~100 years.
  2. There are still people who hold positions of power that who knowingly or unknowingly hold black people back.

After that our agreement ends. The position and opportunity of black people in society today is better than it has ever been. If they had the culture of Asians or Jews they could easily outpace white people in every metric. Further, whining and blaming everything on "white racism" will hold black people in the ghetto forever. Your viewpoints are actively oppressing African Americans.

Haven't you ever wondered why the scientific consensus is the opposite of your claims?

For starters, IQ isn't a great all-around measure of intelligence. It does accurately predict social outcomes and is highly correlated with many intellectual and academic accomplishments, but it has severe flaws. Take for example the Flynn Effect: previous generations had much lower IQ scores than today, when normalized to be on the same scale. The rapid increase of IQ globally (Great Britain saw an increase of 15 points in 70 years) cannot be explained by any plausible genetic explanation—the increase has simply been too fast. Genetic effects couldn't have spread throughout the entire population. There is also no plausible argument that general intelligence has improved by that much. If it had, 40% of the British population a century ago would be mentally damaged by today's standards.

The reasons for the Flynn Effect are unclear. A rise in standardized testing and formal schooling appears to be at least part of it. What is clear is that when comparing people from wildly different environments, IQ is a poor measure of general intelligence. (When comparing people from similar environments, it does remarkably well. The reasons for this are still being studied.)

_

Even if IQ were a good measure of intelligence (which it isn't), that doesn't mean IQ score differences are genetic. Indeed, we know for a fact that they aren't.

Take the Burakumin of Japan. They are an ostracized class and have been for centuries; due to complex religious/spiritual/social reasons, if you have an ancestor who engaged in an "unclean" profession (e.g., a prostitute, a butcher, an actor, etc.), you too are unclean and are socially inferior. The important thing is that the class is genetically identical to the rest of the Japanese population. You can't tell the difference by looking, which is why the Burakumin were forced to get tattoos, and why corporations started keeping lists of who was Burakumin so they knew who not to hire. Today, while those lists are banned, they are still socially stigmatized, and the group forms the ranks of the Japanese mafia, with the tattoos becoming a source of pride.

Anyway, the average have an IQ of the Burakumin is 10-15 points lower than the average Japanese person. See here. This is the same as the gap between white Americans and black Americans. Importantly, both gaps have been shrinking. Most interestingly, the Japanese gap completely disappears among immigrants to the United States—the people here don't know that they're supposed to discriminate against one of the groups.

Similar stories of vanishing IQ gaps appear all over the field. Adopting someone at three years old from Sub-Saharan Africa into a European family cuts the IQ gap by 15 points., cutting the IQ gap in half. The remaining gap, to reiterate, is the same sized that is known to be caused by discrimination. And note further that this is without any improved pre-natal care, which is known to be extremely important to a child's health.

Finally, this is all assuming that "race" is a thing, scientifically speaking, which it isn't. To draw an analogy, it's like constellations. Yes, some stars are closer to others. But the physical differences have little connection with how they appear in the sky, any anyways are not clustered into distinct groups. The stars and the distances between them exist; the pictures only exist in your head. I mean, the idea of "whiteness" isn't even self-consistent and varies across time. Are Poles white? Are Russians? Are Italians? Are Southern-Europeans? Are North-Africans and Middle-Easterners? Are Indians? Are Jews? Are Spaniards? Are Mexicans? Are Chileans? (The last few are the most hilarious currently—the jumps required to assert that South Americans are genetically inferior to "us", but "us" includes the Spanish and Portuguese, are hilarious.)

__

Race doesn't exist the way you think it does. Intelligence might, based on the g-factor (scores in completely different aptitude tests are correlated, suggesting a legitimate "general intelligence"), but IQ is not a good measure of it cross-populations. Intelligence is not a metric of moral standing; the Jews aren't naturally the superiors of everyone else just because they have higher IQ. And IQ differences are entirely explainable by environmental factors.

The neo-Nazis came out way later in the evening. Did I oppose the removal of Robert E Lee’s statue by a bunch of butthurt Leftists who are in no-way affected by it? Absolutely. Not bc I’m fond of him as a historical figure but bc Lee was just the start. Nowadays, Leftists want to get rid of ANY statue, memorial, monument, namesake from Founders like George Washington and Thomas Jefferson bc they owned slaves at one point.

>Christian Picciolini, US author of Memoirs of a Skinhead and former neo-Nazi...

Oh honey, you think what he said/wrote is unique to Trump? As I’ve said many times before, this tactic of calling the sitting Republican president or presidential candidate (and/or their rhetoric) a Nazi, White Supremacist, KKK, racist, etc, is a tired old song.
Some poor loser wrote a whole academic paper on president Bush “white supremacist” rhetoric when he used the phrase “War on Terror” was just really a war on brown people. (1 2) and the same crap against John McCain (1 2 3) and even Mitt Romney, who was the mellowest candidate of the last 50 years (1).

So again, absolutely nothing of substance. Meanwhile, democrats continue to support racist policies like affirmative action and employment quotas which are disproportionately affecting Asians and Jews. But yeah, Trump bashing illegal immigrants of all races is worse 🤣.

No, I don't 'gotta respect McCain' just because he sometimes acts more dignified than the rest of his party. He is where he is because of his dad. He's shown himself to be racist again and again. That's why he didn't mind launching racially-coded attacks on Obama during the campaign.

Sorry, I missed some of your points at the end.

>I'm sorry you think a vulgar t-shirt is the equivalent of a slogan adopted first by white supremacists and then decades later by Trump, but you're making a false equivalency here.

What slogan are you referring to? "Make America Great Again" is ripped of from Reagan's campaign slogan. Are you calling Reagan a racist now too? Can you cite any evidence that "white supremacists" first used the slogan?

Comparing a red hat to a KKK hood is a false equivalency.

> Take it from a gay man or a person of color: we see these hats as symbols of hate.

Can I ask why? Do you even personally know a Trump supporter, much less someone who owns one of these hates? Take it from a white straight man. I don't give a shit what your race or sexuality is.

>That's not because we just suddenly decided to hate Trump.

Oh yes it is. Trump was the first president in history to be in favor of same sex marriage, but you probably didn't even know that. Prior to 2015, he was pals with Hillary, and even donated to her Senate campaign with her famously attending his wedding. Then he challenged Democrat's power, and they told you to hate him. I don't fault you. The Dems are the best propagandists there are.

>Broadly speaking LGBT folks and black people (90+% of both groups) now refuse to vote for Republicans. You'lle this didn't happen with the Bush, McCain, or Reagan campaigns.

"This didn't happen with..." Lol, you're joking, right? They DID THE EXACT SAME THING WITH THEM. Kanye West went on national tv during a telethon to help Katrina victims and said, "George Bush doesn't care about black people". Bush is a Nazi. Bush is a war criminal. Bush hates gays. I grew up listening to all of that. I even believed a little of it at the time.

People having written books about how McCain was a terrible evil no good very bad racist in 2008...only to have Obama give a glowing eulogy about him a decade later.

Joe Biden said of Romney, that if elected, he'd put black people back in chains.

Reagan, too, as we're told by the left, was a vile racist who stoked fears of anti-white racism...because only a racist would care about racist directed at white people...

Democrats don't have any policies that sell well, so they use the same trick they've used for the last 50 years. They call everyone a racist, and then hope you fall for it.

u/Hailanathema · 1 pointr/TheMotte

Racist prejudice can exist in the absence of intention to be racist. This is the whole point of books like Racism without Racists. Systems can be set up to be systematically biased for/against particular races without individuals in those systems intending the result. The reason I mention intent specifically is that your comment was that people portraying interracial relationships had "intent to weaken or destroy" white people.

u/Im_Screaming · 1 pointr/Showerthoughts

Everyone cares subconsciously about what someone’s skin color is. My argument (and what the data shows) is that everyone has prejudice and you are most likely to fall victim to prejudice when you think you have none. It’s not racist to admit you have prejudice and attempt to overcome it and analyze each situation to understand when that bias was unwittingly applied to your decision making.

To use an analogy: Alcoholics are most at risk of relapse when they think they are can easily resist the temptation of alcohol. It lets them put their guard down which in turn makes them more likely to fall victim to temptation.

To be color blind is to be ignorant of our own biases and culturally laden judgements.

This form of color blind racism is considered to be racism without racists. It is when people are good-intentioned but blind to their biases.

I suggest you read the 3rd book since when I’m proposing is a major shift in world view for most people, which it often takes an entire book to truly convey the extreme degree to which color blindness is harmful.

Yes, it does. I practice the hide + 1-star Quickmatch treatment.

It's an absolute dealbreaker, no matter what race the person is. I don't care if there's racial animus behind it or if it's a mere "preference"; as many cool, open-minded people as there are in my area who don't strongly prefer to date intra-racially, I can't be bothered to parse out what lies in the hearts who do prefer it. I realize that people of color have reasons for selecting "yes" that aren't rooted in white supremacy, but I still don't have time for it, especially since I'm the kind of person who, not fitting neatly into any particular cultural box, tends to focus more on individuals rather than groups. A lot of the pushback against the notion that selecting "yes" is racist (which it is, even under the narrow Merriam-Webster definition of "racism") is a byproduct of a modern Western society shot through with racism without racists.

For the record, I'm not white.

Of course you don’t see or feel the privilege. And this is absolutely no fault of your own. You’ve had it your whole life. To you it’s perfectly normal, expected, it’s the status quo and it is invisible to you.

I had this very discussion with my uncle-in-law a little while back. He couldn’t understand how people of color and people in poverty can’t live “the American Dream” simply by working hard (ie “pull yourself up by your bootstraps). He kept pointing out the challenges in his own upbringing and how he had overcome them “all on his own.” He just could not see how his upper middle class upbringing which included a working father and stay at home mom both of whom were college educated, four bedroom house in a good neighborhood, and private schooling with after school tutoring had afforded him a level of privilege not available to people in poverty.

So here is my challenge to you. Go and find a black man any black man and ask them about how they have experienced racism and discrimination in their own lives; ask him how he responds to being pulled over by a cop. Find a poor family of color using government assistance and ask them about how they are talked to by everyday people while they work two full time jobs and go without food to make sure their kids have dinner. Go and find a person who speaks with a Spanish accent and ask them how often they are told to “go back where they came from.” Go and find a woman working in the same position as you do and ask her what her salary is. Go and ask a woman what she does to protect herself when she has to go out alone at night.

Then ask yourself why YOU have never experienced those things. The answer is because you are a white male. Still don’t believe me. Then pull out a book and read. Here are some great books that will educate you to the condition of people of color:

You're severely moving the goal posts.

>most Black and Hispanic people in the US were brought here / came here in extreme poverty and have been kept that way for centuries, whereas most immigrants (especially more recent ones) from Asia come from wealthy families who are actually able to make the move here

Your statement doesn't talk about police policy, nor do you specifically mention post WWII. That's why the Irish were brought up to begin with. Your premise based on the words you chose, was that black/hispanic people don't have the same opportunities because of poverty and racial discrimination. These are two things which were faced by other groups as well. Groups that now flourish.

Might want to check out Black Rednecks and White Liberals

u/_AnObviousThrowaway_ · 1 pointr/AskTrumpSupporters

The after effects, sure. But I don't think you can make the case that racism is the primary thing keeping black people down today. For example, take the period between the civil war and the civil rights act of 1964. Black people advanced socially in that time period much more quickly than in the period since the civil rights act, despite the fact discrimination was both legal and extremely common, at least in the south. This tells me there's something else going on. You can see a lot of the problems that plague the black community also plague some white communities, namely crime, poverty, and drug use. Charles Murray writes about said white communities here. And they appear to have similar causes, poor work ethic, single parenthood, and so on. As Thomas Sowell points out,, black culture and redneck culture aren't as dissimilar as you might think.

u/ExOttoyuhr · 1 pointr/CapitalismVSocialism

Nigeria has an Arab-like IQ; they don't have Arab genes, but they do have Arab cultural influence in the north, so much of it that they even have Arab pathologies. Nigeria also has British influences from colonization (which sometimes spread useful memes in spite of itself), and the native Ibo had an industrious, mercantile outlook on life even before colonization. If race causes IQ and GDP, Nigeria is random noise; if memes cause IQ and GDP, and can spread independently of race, Nigeria makes sense.

Race causing IQ and GDP also can't explain West Virginia nearly as well as memes causing them can. West Virginia has IQ of 99, higher than Canada's 97; but they have a GDP per capita of $30,000, much lower than Canada's $45,000, and there are obvious memetic differences between West Virginia and Canada that would obviously tend to hold West Virginia back. Thomas Sowell also argues that memes -- in fact the same memes that work their mischief in Appalachia -- hold back American blacks, and I already mentioned how A Farewell to Alms seems to be more an argument for memes evolving and spreading than for genes doing the same. (A Farewell to Alms claims that there was meaningful genetic change in the West in the past 1500 years; but the avoid-gluten crowd offers pretty compelling arguments that you can't have big evolutionary changes in short periods of time, so A Farewell to Alms must be documenting a form of evolution other than the one it thinks it's documenting.)

There are obviously other factors in intelligence and economic functioning (I mention nutrition below), but I think that different memes are a lot of what it comes down to -- and that outliers like Appalachia and Nigeria are arguments for a memes-first position.

Of course, beneficial and harmful memes don't mean that you have to rip out cultures wholesale and replace them. Sowell approves of New England's 19th-century cultural-replacement program for blacks, since he sees Southern black culture as a white imposition and is therefore willing to go shopping for the most useful white-imposed culture; but American Indian writers are much less enthusiastic about New England's 19th-century cultural-replacement program aimed at them, and they have a point. As A Farewell to Alms accidentally establishes, peace, stability, and a minimum of outside exploitation are enough for valuable memes to evolve -- and I'd say that doing more than that is counterproductive. The arguments for cultural diversity are the same as the arguments for ecological diversity, and I doubt that I need to rehash them here.

u/JBCVA · 1 pointr/Catholicism

Here are a couple of readings on the topic that explain the problem:

The Crisis of American Lonliness

The Quest for Community

u/anactofmodernity · 1 pointr/urbanplanning

I'd say it's not an inherently leftist value at all, but the left definitely does a better job at mobilizing and implementing new urbanism ideas.
I've seen quite a bit of pushback against the neoconservative suburb-loving mainstream figures on the right, and lots of academics (such as writers at First Things, various authors at the Front Porch Republic and the signatories behind "Against the Dead Consensus") have worked to make the right more friendly to the conservative benefits that come from well planned cities.

Robert Nesbit is a great resource for this. He began as a leftist but eventually came to intellectual conservatism, specializing in human sociology. This is key.
His book "Quest for Community " argues that the rise of the powerful modern state has eroded the sources of community—the family, the neighborhood, the church, the guild. Alienation and loneliness inevitably resulted. One of his solutions to this alienation is for things simply be done on a human scale. Neighborhoods, streets, towns, all need to consider first and foremost the necessity of human connection and localism, and the goods that come from them. This could mean having wider sidewalks, taking the car out of the city, etc.
Same goes for Leon Krier. Began as a modernist with liberal tendencies and saw that a traditional urban setting was far more conducive to human flourishing than modernism or suburbia.
The list goes on and on. One of the key trends I've noticed amongst pro-New Urbanism individuals on the right is the split between conservatism and traditionalism. You are much more likely to find the oil money, suburb loving, trickle down/anti-urbanism economics amongst neoconservatives and other mainstream republicans.

I am all too aware of the corrosive effect of pop culture on society. I currently teach English and ethics as an adjunct at a community college here in northeast Ohio (Akron/Cleveland) area while finishing my law degree. 85 to 90% of my students are black (25% of my last class had seen prison time) and I regularly receive essays full of 'text-speak' (e.g. 'u' for 'you') extolling the virtues of looking 'fresh' and other such nonsense. I also taught freshman level philosophy courses at Ohio University and had similar experiences though not as pronounced.

>This was an experiment conducted by scientists...

Well, social scientists anyway... : )

>However, you aren't recognizing the impact race has on determining class.

I do recognize this and referred to it somewhere in this thread when asking someone about the legacy of slavery and segregation. I agree that this is one factor that does limit minorities, though I think it is more an issue of how it affects class presently (it's a longer journey to the top when one starts at the bottom) than one of overt racism.

>But it is very different that almost no minorities have any generational wealth.

The minorities and I, we have a lot in common. : )

Please don't get the impression that I am insensitive to the plight of minorities or in some state of denial regarding the persistence of racism. My point is simply that while racism continues to be an issue, class is the more daunting obstacle (though there is of course a relation between race and class).

You should read this book. The title is intentionally silly and the author has a great sense of humor, but there is much more to the book than that.

Not sure how modern you're looking for, but "How the Other Half Lives" is a well known book about the slums of the late 1800s.

u/ldav232 · 1 pointr/conspiracy

Hanging around /r/conspiracy does not imply that I should take theories at face value. I think that there are power structures designed to keep people in power, but I disagree that they're based on race, race division is nothing but another diversion tactic from those that are truly in power, to divide and conquer.

You've pointed me towards no proof or any reasonable indicator that black people are truly oppressed. Black people that have decided to transcend the culture that would bring them down have been successful, those that decide to blame others for their problems probably have not. It's really that simple. You can't argue inequality and oppression when black people have the same rights and can even rise to be president or attorney general, this is something that you have not addressed.

I recommend this book:

https://www.amazon.com/Intellectuals-Race-Thomas-Sowell/product-reviews/0465058728/ref=cm_cr_dp_text?ie=UTF8&showViewpoints=0&sortBy=helpful#R3PI46WC1VDA6T

Sowell explains why cultural differences and not genetic or racial discrimination determine how certain minorities excel and others not so much.

I also recommend taking a look at the crime statistics coming from the USA census bureau and the FBI. They show that black people commit a disproportionate amount of crimes in proportion to their % of the overall population, this is something that many people don't get into their heads, the concept of representation.

u/VoodooIdol · 1 pointr/politics

>hate crimes apply to any racially motivated crime, whether it's white on black or black on white.

Unfortunately the US judicial system says otherwise.

>affirmative action is not my bag and I never mentioned it

Because it goes against your belief that white men aren't oppressed.

>white men do get public assistance too

I can name several people I know personally who were turned down for public assistance specifically because they were white. I have been as well.

>your points make no sense and I am getting pretty tired of this

They make no sense to you because you're programmed to believe otherwise. Step outside the brainwashing for a moment.

Read this book if you are interested in learning more about the beginnings of the white slave trade and forced indentured servitude. It is truly an eye opener and all of it's statistics and figures are backed up with the sources you seek.

It explains in great detail why being a white indentured servant was often much worse than being a black slave. In short, a slave was property that was paid for and owned so you generally took care of them. An indentured servant was like a rental and if they died during their service period it was beneficial because you didn't have to pay them out with property at the end of their term.

During that time in Ireland it was a crime to be poverty stricken and something as innocent as begging for bread was enough to have you arrested and put on a ship to America or Barbados and forced into indentured servitude. The term redneck comes from pale Irish whites that were worked in the Barbados sun. It was a way for the upper class to maintain control and have peasants removed from the landscape to further their grasp on the country and it's resources.

Do you ever wonder why everyone claims that America was founded by entitled whites and built by black slaves yet most white people are poor and own no property? It is because most of us are descendants of lower class servants, not noblemen. All told more Irish people were forced into this situation than black slaves were brought over from Africa.

u/serpentjaguar · 1 pointr/WTF

>It's not a lie that Jeff Foxworthy and Larry The Cable Guy's audience is almost entirely lower class white people, their shows and movies have been marketed exclusively to them since the beginning.

And your point is?

Basically, I rest my case. Here's an underprivileged and undereducated population that has been taught that it's OK to laugh at and make fun of everything they are and not only that, they should somehow be perversely proud of their backwardness.

As far as I'm concerned, that's clinical malfeasance on a grand cultural scale.

The dirty truth is that while racism is a big no no, classism is still open season in this country so long as it's poor whites that you're making fun of. The fact that it's rednecks and hillbillies themselves who laugh the hardest at their own lack of dignity bespeaks precisely of the problem.

These are a people who have, on a grand cultural scale, been given little or no recognition and dignity within our wider cultural milieu. Yeah, Doc Watson is probably one of the baddest-ass guitar players of all time, sure, Earl Scruggs plays a mean banjo and Emmy Lou Harris sure can sing. Flannery O'Connor is one of our greatest short story writers and Sam Walton owns your ass and neighborhood, but guess what? They're the exceptions, not the rule, the ones who for whatever reason were able to break out of Appalachia.

The fact is that no one gives a fuck about poor white people, least of all themselves, and this is exactly the type of pathology that sociologists have come to expect in the forgotten corners of society.

Edit: I cordially refer you to Jim Goad's excellent book, "The Redneck Manifesto" for an often humorous but nonetheless in-depth look at the issue.

A Harvard study done for ten years involving over 26,000 people.

  1. Lowered trust in areas with high diversity is also associated with:
  2. Lower confidence in local government, local leaders, and the local news media
  3. Lower political efficacy–that is, confidence in one’s own influence
  4. Lower frequency of registering to vote, but more interest and knowledge about politics and more participation in protest marches and social reform groups.
  5. Higher political advocacy, but lower expectations that it will bring about a desirable result
  6. Less expectation that others will cooperate to solve dilemmas of collective action (e.g. voluntary conservation to ease a water or energy shortage)
  7. Less likelihood of working on a community project
  8. Less likelihood of giving to charity or volunteering
  9. Fewer close friends and confidants
  10. Less happiness and lower perceived quality of life
  11. More time spent watching television and more agreement that “television is my most important form of entertainment”

Putnam’s study was published in 2001. Genetic cluster analysis of the micro satellite markers produced four major clusters, which showed near perfect correspondence with the four self-reported race/ethnicity categories. Of 3636 subjects, only 5 (0.14%) showed genetic cluster membership different from their self-identified race/ethnicity.

Good Fences: The Importance of Setting Boundaries for Peaceful Coexistence

Alex Rutherford, Dion Harmon, Justin Werfel, Shlomiya Bar-Yam, Alexander Gard-Murray, Andreas Gros, Yaneer Bar-Yam

We consider the conditions of peace and violence among ethnic groups, testing a theory designed to predict the locations of violence and interventions that can promote peace. Characterizing the model’s success in predicting peace requires examples where peace prevails despite diversity. Switzerland is recognized as a country of peace, stability, and prosperity. This is surprising because of its linguistic and religious diversity that in other parts of the world lead to conflict and violence. Here we analyze how peaceful stability is maintained. Our analysis shows that peace does not depend on integrated coexistence, but rather on well-defined topographical and political boundaries separating groups. Mountains and lakes are an important part of the boundaries between sharply defined linguistic areas. Political canton and circle (sub-canton) boundaries often separate religious groups.

Where such boundaries do not appear to be sufficient, we find that specific aspects of the population distribution either guarantee sufficient separation or sufficient mixing to inhibit intergroup violence according to the quantitative theory of conflict. In exactly one region, a porous mountain range does not adequately separate linguistic groups and violent conflict has led to the recent creation of the canton of Jura. Our analysis supports the hypothesis that violence between groups can be inhibited by physical and political boundaries. A similar analysis of the area of the former Yugoslavia shows that during widespread ethnic violence, existing political boundaries did not coincide with the boundaries of distinct groups, but the peace prevailed in specific areas where they did coincide. The success of peace in Switzerland may serve as a model to resolve conflict in other ethnically diverse countries and regions of the world.

> I don't care what Engels thinks about homosexuality since it is not a very historical materialist account, and there have been far better accounts since then––particularly in those who struggled against this backwards line in recent history.

I've been looking over Jasbir Puar's Terrorist Assemblages: Homonationalism in Queer Times. She says a lot of rather alarming things about how the Western imperialist nations use gay-rights discourse to further imperialist ends. Care to comment?

>You just have serious problems reading because possiblegoat pointed out your translation of "abominable practice of sodomy" was wrong, and validated what I was initially saying about the quote.

One has to think you're intentionally trying to confuse people with this. First off, it isn't "my" translation at all. It was copied and pasted from marxists.org. Secondly, you try to make an artificial separation of being attracted to young men and homosexuality. Would you make the same distinction for heterosexuality? Is a man with ephebophilia not still primarily heterosexual? Thirdly, it's obvious from the quote I provided Engels links the two explicitly, and does not try to splice them into two different and unrelated phenomena, as you do.

>Your weasel words of "cardinal question" are despicable. Any communist project now must take queer solidarity, but along class lines, into account as well as race and sex.

So, you see upholding homosexuality as a cardinal question, in other words. You wouldn't belong to a party that let people in who thought homosexuality was linked to capitalism and fascism. That is, you would not be in a party with Marx, Engels, Lenin, Stalin and Mao.

> All of the arguments about homosexuality being part of "decaying imperialism", "fascistic", etc. have been critiqued, and very well so, from a variety of communist positions for years by now.

I've not seen a communist critique of Joseph Massad's Desiring Arabs or the previously mentioned work of Jasbir Puar, which IMHO persuasively agrees that the discourse around homosexuality in the Western imperialist nations serves the interests of imperialism. This seems to be the most up to date stuff, which coincidentally or not, justifies the old communist line regarding homosexuality.

Maybe you are interested in making sure everyone respects modern socially-constructed Western identities. I am not. I am interested in ending imperialism. Whatever it takes to end imperialism.

Black Rednecks and White Liberals Paperback – April 24, 2006
by Thomas Sowell
is a good book that goes into detail about the economic and cultural effects that create this sort of anti-government high crime areas. In it are an economic crime and education data that source it.

I think you can find a PDF version online somewhere if you don't want to buy it.

Edit: here is a Q&A where he covers some of the topics of the book if you just want to skip through it to the relevant section, to get a summary of the book.

here is a review that covers some of the content of the book if you want to look into the book before buying it.

I'm sorry, I must disagree. He continually glossed over their depravity, making them seem like they were great people, almost to the point of veneration, up until they beat him up at the end. He went in with a notion of what he wanted to find, found it, and wrote about it. Not only that, but he was drunk/high almost the entire time he was writing it, so I highly doubt the validity of anything he says. I've read a lot of great literature and bad literature in my day, and that falls under bad lit.

If you want a good, properly done, unbiased, and well written ethnographic work that draws you into the lives of people in a shitty place in life, read Brothel or Sidewalk. If you want to read a piece of yellow gonzo journalism, pick up Hell's Angels.

My major critique is not so much that that he was biased (which he was), but that he wrote in a very fragmented style that wasn't lucid. You can write in such a style and be a great author (e.g. Kurt Vonnegut), however, he constantly sturggled to draw his fragments together. He hopped about sequentially without rhyme or reason, leaving stories half told and interjecting quotes between fragments that had nothing to do with the story. While some of his works might be great, I do not by any means consider Hell's Angels to be a great piece or journalism, literature, fiction, fantasy, or writing.

no, this is the cost of an American (Southern Scots Irish influenced) culture that embraces and celebrates violence.

http://citeseerx.ist.psu.edu/viewdoc/download?doi=10.1.1.567.1720&rep=rep1&type=pdf

https://onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/abs/10.1111/jeea.12096

"The paper tests the popular hypothesis that the high prevalence of homicide in the South of the United States originates from the settlement by herders from the fringes of Britain in the 18th century. I find that historical Scots‐Irish presence is associated with higher contemporary homicide, particularly by white offenders, and that a culture of violence was transmitted to subsequent generations—but only in the South and, more generally, where historical institutional quality was low. The interpretation is that the Scots‐Irish culture of honor prevailed and persisted as an adaptive behavior to weak institutions. As institutional quality converged between the South and North over the last 200 years, the influence of the culture of honor has been fading over time. The results are robust to controlling for state fixed effects and for a large number of historical and contemporary factors, as well as to relying on instrumental variables for historical settlements. The results are also specific to a particular type of homicide and background of settlers."

Read Thomas Sowell's White Liberals and Black Rednecks to understand how that culture has poisoned much of the southern underclasses, both black and white...
