Copy pasta'd from another thread asking about how it was made and our backgrounds. Added #6.

The short story is:

  1. Phi, me, phrakture, and other mods put it together circa 2012-2013.
  2. Phi did most of the heavy lifting for putting together the wiki and overall program coordination
  3. I helped with most of the concepts for routine creation and implementation, much of what was and still is based on my book Overcoming Gravity and Overcoming Gravity 2nd Ed.
  4. A bunch of stretching/mobility was pulled from Phrak's Starting Stretching and molding mobility, although heavily overlaps with a lot of various concepts already out there.
  5. Antranik and other mods were instrumental in finally putting it together in video format.
  6. The RR has undergone a lot of very subtle revisions since then removing some exercises in favor of others. It is one example of how a good beginner routine for bodyweight/gymnastics/calisthenics strength training can work.

    As for people's backgrounds, I'll only state my own straight off my website:

Lead climbing should be scary when you start out. The fear is just your lizard brain trying to keep you from killing yourself. Your lizard brain doesn't understand that the equipment will keep you safe, it just sees a rope going from your waist down instead of up, and it freaks out. Your lizard brain is just trying to look out for you, but your rational brain knows better. You have to train your lizard brain to shut up. Doing that takes work. The only way to make lead climbing not scary is to train in falling.

There are safe falls, and there are dangerous falls. You can't trust yourself in the moment to figure out which is which, so it's always a good idea to figure out where any dangerous falls are before you get on a route. As soon as you start climbing, you're going to decide that every fall is a dangerous fall, so make up your mind on the ground. Try to see positions that you'd clip from, and what would happen if you were to fall while clipping - the worst case scenario. From the ground you can imagine the fall and rope stretch, and it won't look that bad. Once you're on the wall, it'll probably seem like a guaranteed ground fall, because your lizard brain is losing it's marbles. Anyway, in a gym, all falls after the first bolt or two are almost always safe (assuming you have a good belayer!). Even so I find it useful to image the different falls I could take.

The point of that last bit is to separate rational fear from irrational fear. I'm only going to focus on training away irrational fear, where you're scared but you wouldn't actually get hurt by a fall. You're at the gym, you've looked at a climb and decided it would actually be safe to fall anywhere. Now it's time to get on and fall.

If you're anything like I was when I first started lead climbing, you'll probably make a clip, then pause since you now feel "safe". There's the idea that each bolt is an island of safety in dangerous waters. I'm going to keep assuming that you think like I did when I was starting out because it seems common based on talking to friends learning to lead. Could be wrong though.

At this point you're going to ask yourself "do I have enough strength to reach the next bolt?" This is a bad mental state. You should be focusing on the next few moves, not where the bolts are. If you're unsure, you'll want to ask your belayer to take. Don't do it! Either keep climbing, or if you're feeling too scared, just let go. It'll pretty much be a top rope fall at this point. Asking the belayer to take is forbidden when you're training in falling. Your only options are to climb or let go.

Once you realize that small top rope falls are no big deal, start making a few moves above the bolt. You may also freeze up here. You'll wonder if you can make the next bolt, and want to downclimb to the previous one. Don't do it! When you downclimb, you're training yourself that falling a few moves above the bolt is somehow dangerous. Downclimbing is a very common, but very bad habit. Instead, just pause. Hold on a bit. If you can hold on, you're proving that you're not that tired, and you probably could have made more moves. Then let go and take a small fall.

Once you get used to doing that, try pausing again. This time, instead of just letting go, throw for the next hold, but don't try to catch it. The goal is to fall while moving from hold to hold, rather than just letting go.

Not so bad is it? So the next thing is try for the next hold, and this time try to actually catch it. If you do, repeat that and try to get the next hold. Continue until you fall (clipping bolts along the way, obviously). Falling while trying really hard to climb means that you're no longer being blocked by fear. Congrats! You're focusing on the individual moves, rather than the bolts and the falls. Now you should be able to lead close to your top roping grade.

Now those rules are simple, but that doesn't mean they're easy. There is fear at each step that takes practice to overcome. The point is to avoid making habits that will hurt your lead climbing. Even when you nail things one day, the fear can come back the next. Training your lead head is like training a muscle. It needs to be regularly exercised. Given time and consistent practice, it'll get strong though.

One other thing I want to mention is that you should really avoid top roping once you start leading. By top roping you're training yourself that leading is somehow more dangerous. A common pattern I see is where people want to top rope a hard climb before leading it. If the falls are safe, what's the point? You're just reinforcing that lead climbing is scary. If you treat lead climbing like something to work your way up to, it'll stay scary. The point is to make it routine.

I'm bummed I didn't see this topic earlier. I've given a couple of speeches in college about this subject. About the only thing I can add to the discussion is the Fighting in Ice Hockey Wiki page and the well put together book called The Code: The Unwritten Rules of Fighting and Retaliation in the NHL. There is a LOT more honor and respect in fighting than one would think.

The key book for football hooliganism is Among the Thugs by Bill Buford. A fantastic read that gives a great insight into 1980s British hooligan culture. A great look into what started off as a bunch of young lads just wanting to fight that spiraled into violence and death.

The Ball is Round by David Goldblatt. This book is football's history bible. But chapters 13, 14 and 15 focus particularly on FIFA corruption, South American dictatorships and the outbreak of a worldwide hooligan culture, all of which are intertwined.

The book Football Hooliganism is also on my list of readings.

Fever Pitch by Nick Hornby, while not a particularly brilliant insight into hooliganism is a great look into the relationship between fan and club.

And there are some great documentaries on it too:

Football's Fight Club. Charts the rise and fall of hooliganism in 70s and 80s Britain.

There are loads of great documentaries on youtube to be honest that chronicle the problem of hooliganism both in the present day and the past. Here's one I thought was good

I don't know anything too specifically related to Leeds, but Among the Thugs does spend some time with leeds' firm.

I also just watched Vice's program on the Celtic-Rangers rivalry just last night. A good watch.

This is like the exact opposite of what happened. He was a serious commentator for Grantland. Then he started the ringer, and has become a shitty hot-take artist.

E: More context on how the guy above me is talking out of his gaping asshole. Bill wrote The Big Book of Basketball. It's basically the Hive Queen to Shea Serrano's Hegemon in terms of basketball literature (sorry for the enders game reference, it's all I got here). He basically got a show on HBO when he started the Ringer to be a hot take artist. The show tanked, but clearly he wants to keep doing it, because htat's all he's been doing since.

Ok.

Step 1. Buy a copy of Tremper's Staying Alive in Avalanche Terrain and read it cover to cover.

Step 2. Buy a beacon (3 antennae), probe (at least 240cm) and shovel (metal blades are not optional), familiarize yourself with them and practice to using them so it is second nature when you really have to.

Step 3. Take a level 1 avalanche course. If it doesn't consist of 1 day in a classroom and 2 days in the field, then it is not a level 1 avy course.


Skis anything will work, find a ski you like and go with it. Versatility is key, you need to be comfortable skiing them in a variety of terrain and variety of conditions. Obviously the lighter the better.

Boots You at least want a good hybrid/crossover AT touring boot, like the Salomon Quest Max or Technica Cochise ranges, then there are the more touring focused hyrbrids like the Scarpa Freedom SL which have interchangable sole blocks so they can work with both DIN(Frame) and Tech bindings. Then you've got the out and out touring boots. Best boot is the one that fits your foot though!

Bindings
There are a few choices when it come to bindings. There are the frame style that have become really popular in the last few years. They're essentially a regular alpine binding mounted on a frame that allows the heel piece to release so you can skin in them. Feels like a normal binding (the height is a little more though), durable and familiar but the heaviest and least natural pivot point for the uphill. Marker Baron/Duke, Salomon/Atomic Guardian/Tracker, Tyrolia AAadrenalin etc.

Then you have tech bindings that use completely different retention and release mechanisms using pin system. Lightweight and natural pivot point so much better for the uphill, and no dramatic sacrifice on the downhill unless you're out hucking huge cliffs etc. Dynafit Radical ST or FT, G3 Ions, Fritschi Vipec etc.

Finally in the last couple of years there have been some attempts to make a burlier binding than a traditional tech binding, but lighter than a frame. They're an attempt to marry the best of both worlds. Dynafit Beast 14/16 or Marker Kingpin.

Once you make those decisions you're also going to need things like skins and ski crampons, potentially ice axes and other mountaineering equipment, but once you get into it you will know what you personally require for the skiing you're doing.

I think discussions on power meters fit right into the purposes of /r/Velo. Why don't you tell us a little about your riding and training background? How long have you been training, and what sort of goals do you have? Have you read Friel's Training Bible or Allen and Coggan's Training and Racing with a Power Meter?

As far as power meters go, there are a few different types on the market right now (and others will chip in here if i'm forgetting anything, because reasons). Here I'm sorting them from closest to power generation down the driveline:

  • Pedal-based meters measure at the foot, and can measure left and right separately (not a useful measurement...yet.). Examples here include Garmin's Vector pedal system and Look/Polar's Keos. PowerTap will be releasing their P1 pedals this summer as well.
  • Crankarm power meters are newcomers at a lower pricepoint. Stages Power is a left-only power meter that pulled prices down with their introduction of power for $749. Additionally, 4iiiis has released a power meter that is just hitting the market — this is priced insanely competitively, like $350 or something, and it'll be interesting to see if it's a useful player.
  • Next up is crank-based power, and there are a lot of players here. SRM has been considered the gold standard of power, with a price to match, but that is changing. Quarq (from SRAM) is also well known, Power2Max seems to be highly regarded and is very competitively priced, Rotor has a system, and Pioneer Electronics has a new model that's a little pricier but also quite advanced. PowerTap is also releasing a chainring power system this summer.
  • Finishing up is hub-based power with the venerable PowerTap hub, which has been around for about forever and is a known quantity and still a solid value proposition.

    Head on over to DC Rainmaker and check out his reviews, because his is the gold standard on incredibly detailed information on all things electronics. His reviews are excellent, and he's getting a 4iiii unit to review so we'll know how it fairs. That'd be the best option if you're really price sensitive because their pricing promises to massively undercut all the other players on the market.

    So this should be a start.

  4. you can buy the various ascenders if you want later, but you MUST be able to use a prussik and kleimheist (for slings) ... that may be the only thing you have on a multi

    practice is everything

For a historical perspective, Blood, Sweat, and Chalk covers the evolution of a number of notable offenses and defenses (mostly offenses).

Older Redditors are probably sick of hearing me say this but…

If you want to get faster, start a structured training program and stick with it. For what it's worth, I've noticed that there are a few different types of riders in each race, and they all finish in the order you'd expect:

  • Those who just ride hard a few days a week without any structure.
  • Those who "train" a few days a week, without much structure other than "endurance rides on Day X, sprints on Day Y, etc."
  • Those who follow a specific training program over the course of a season, and time their training so they'll peak during the weeks of their "A" races. (The races they're targeting to win the most.)

    Needless to say, the riders in the third group win almost every event they enter, with the members of the second group finished in the chase group behind them.

    Unfortunately, I wasted my first two seasons of racing in the first group. If you don't have a ton of time to train (6+ hours a day), try the Time Crunched Training Program. Even though it's for people who are "time crunched," you still train 2-3 times during the week, and usually on both weekend days.

    By week three you'll be faster, and you peak around weeks 12-14.

You will want to make sure you are doing a body weight routine that includes more difficult movements and not just ricidulous volume on basic exercises.

/r/bodyweightfitness is a good starting point to get you rolling but if you already have great lifts their routine might not be advanced enough for you. Overcoming Gravity is a great resource with writeups and progressions for exercises although through some extremely advanced gymnastics exercises such as planche pushups.

It should be very easy to keep your size for your upper body with BW exercises. Lower body is a bit harder, especially if you have a very big squat/deadlift. Still doable, but for the most part you still will want to add weight, and will be doing things like weighted pistols and weighted shrimp squats.

Dominik Sky and FitnessFAQs both have youtube channels with a good bit of information.

A place to do pullups is all you really need for bodyweight exercises. I would recommend picking up a set of Gymnastics Rings at some point or another though as they are extremely useful for bodyweight training.

I would increasing your flexibility training a bit. A lot of bodyweight stuff benefits hugely from increased flexibility.

Also lastly, I don't know how advanced of a lifter you are, but if you are a very advanced lifter be a little with some of the very advanced straight arm body weight exercises. They require a lot of tendon strength in addition to muscle. Even if you have a 2x body weight bench for example you will want to still do some tendon conditioning before jumping straight to an iron cross to avoid injury.

  • Escaping belay - useful for fallen leader.
  • Passing a knot on rappel - useful if you get a core shot and have to isolate it to get off a climb.
  • Ascending a rope with friction hitches - Useful if you get a rope stuck on rappel and need to free it, or if you find that your ropes aren't long enough etc. Important to learn how to do this with friction hitches since you probably don't normally carry ascenders.
  • Tandem Rappel - Fallen climber partner, dropped device
  • How to rig a haul system - Fallen second, second can't pull a move
  • Munter knot - useful as a belay knot if you drop a device.
  • Butterfly knot - useful to isolate a core shot

Rather than claiming to know the answers to your personal problems, I'll point you to two resources that have helped me greatly:

  • The Rock Warriors Way: This book deems it self as "Mental training for climbers", but it is so much more than that. As you mention, "climbing forces these sorts of lessons upon us all" and this book acknowledges that, walking you through the borderline spiritual journey of the author and providing great lessons for the reader
  • 9 out of 10 climbers make the same mistakes: This is a training book that avoids quantitive goals (like, 3 sets of X followed by a 4 minute break) and talks instead of a number of the physical/technique/psychological problems we all commonly face in improving as climbers. It opened my mind to new approaches to escaping self-carved ruts in my training.

Seconded for sure. Watch some soccer and, if you like books, go read up on the game. There’s a fairly short but really high-quality list of books that you can hit to get a varied taste of soccer, from history to tactics to biographies to silly books about English soccer clichés.

But there is no substitute for watching the game, and even playing around in your back yard a bit. Enjoy!

(Edit: there are other books on the shortlist out there too. Also, there are plenty of fun and informative podcasts related to the sport if you’re into that sort of thing)

I started with this. Zinn & the Art of Road Bike Maintenance: The World's Best-Selling Bicycle Repair and Maintenance Guide https://www.amazon.com/dp/193771537X/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_.ALcAb2R65KY3

Since I got it, I apprenticed at a shop for about a year and I'd consider that book pretty good. I'm not a huge fan of the wheelbuilding section in it, but it's enough to get you through your first wheel. After that you may want to start exploring other methods as I find the one in that book overly time consuming/confusing compared to the one I learned on the shop.

Edit: I read you might be able to find it in your local library, so you could check it out before you buy it or just simply check it out when you need.

Not just padding, but a LOT of rule changes. Players were getting crushed because the old strategy was to line up behind the ball carrier and push him forward while the other team pushed him back. That's why the Bush Push from the USC-ND a few years back was so illegal even though it never gets called.

It's really interesting to read about the new plays and strategies they developed after all the rule changes. Think about how crazy it would be to take a popular sport, then re-write the rule book. What if you could make multiple forward passes during one play and from beyond the line of scrimmage? What if they changed the number of yards you needed to get for a first down? You'd have to come up with whole new plays and formations.

The evolution of formations from the 1920s to the 60s to now is pretty wild. Check out this book for a good lesson on that

Hal Koerner's Field Guide to Ultrarunning is a really useful reference. Hal won Western States and Hardrock despite never having "elite" athletic ability. His race day execution is legendary.

Relentless Forward Progress by Bryon Powell is another good one. Bryon is a front-of-the-mid-pack runner and editor of irunfar (which is another good reference). His knowledge of ultrarunning is encyclopedic.

1: If we dont trade Love we are going to try to compete for the 8th spot in the west. If we do trade Love its back to rebuilding for the next few years.

2: He played his heart out here for us with his time here and we did everything in out power to unsuccessfully rebuild for the next decade.

3: I havent seen one in particular for the Wolves but I would suggest the Book of Basketball which does a great job of covering the NBA in a whole with fun back stories.

Zinn and the Art of Road Bike Maintenance is basically the bible of bike repair. Buy that and supplement it with videos on YouTube from Park Tools or GCN.

If you live in a decent sized city, check and see if there's a bike co-op. They usually offer free/low cost repair classes and have a whole bunch of tools so you can see what you like/need.

I'm a Park Tool loyalist and will only buy that brand for 90% of my bike tools (my hex wrenches, tire levers, screwdriver, and fixie chainwhip are not PT). They're more expensive but they're solid and last forever. Can't really go wrong with them.

I bought a copy of Zinn & the Art of Road Bike Maintenance specifically because it includes a sensible list of regular maintenance tasks. It has several lists, like “before every ride,” “after every ride (or three),” “every 1000 miles,” “every 20,000 miles,” and helpful hints about how to know specifically when you need to do certain things, regardless of how many rides or miles you do.

  • The New Bill James Historical Baseball Abstract This book will give you a great overview of the game from 1870 to 1999. Breaks the game down by decades and what the game was like and how it changed. Also ranks the top 100 players at each position. Really anything by James is an entertaining read, but this is the must have for baseball conversation.
  • Baseball Prospectus - Baseball Between the Numbers A good introductory course into the newer sabrmetrics. It will answer many questions in depth about what was going on as far as player evaluation in Moneyball.
  • Tom Tango - The Book Much more advanced sabrmetrics but very current and groundbreaking. The author started on the internet, and last offseason secured a job working for the Seattle Mariners.

    The next three are to give you a better view of the game from the players/owners perspective.

  • Veeck as in Wreck Bill Veeck was one hell of a guy. His father was president of the Cubs in the 30's, and Bill would go on to own his fair share of teams. Always an individual, he stood against the baseball ownership cabal on many occasions. Spent the last years of his life watching the Cubs from the center field bleachers. His autobiography is humorous and insightful. A must read for any baseball fan.
  • Buck O'Neil - I was Right on Time Called the soul of negro league baseball, Buck O'Neil recounts his playing days in the negro leagues, and covers many of the legends in a very matter of fact way.
  • Jim Bouton - Ball Four Last but not least is former Yankee star, now washed up knuckleballer Jim Bouton recalling the inaugural season of the short lived Seattle Pilots. Baseball players in all their vulgar glory. Also will teach you the fine art of "shooting beaver".

Ask yourself why you want a power meter.

At the moment you're not doing much on the bike (if your longest ride is 30 minutes) and I suspect your not doing anything that could be considered structured training as a result. Spend a year getting your time on the bike up. Get the bike and yourself properly equipped, then think about a power meter. Part of using a power meter is analyzing and understanding the data you obtain with it, and at the moment you just aren't going to produce enough data in volume to understand it nor get enough use out of it to justify your purchase. Power meters don't make you faster, proper training does. And power meters just make it easier to understand your training. You don't need a power meter to train though.

Buy some pedals and some proper shoes and go put the hours in. Consider why you want a power meter, then decide whether it is worth getting one. Don't be one of the many people who buy one and don't know how to use it.

You need to learn how to train without a power meter before you'll get any use out of one. And your post history suggests you haven't done the recommended reading. Hunter Allen's "Training and Racing with a Power Meter" is the best training resource you can buy, regardless of whether you own a powermeter or not. You should buy a copy and learn what you want/need to do.

As a final aside, for the love of god don't give Durianrider the attention he craves, nor should you take his word at gospel. Whilst there is variation in heart rate that can offset day-to-day comparisons, you are more than capable of using one to follow trends in your training over longer periods. This is particularly true for you as a newer rider. I'm also going to encourage you to ignore Durianrider as your post history suggests you're attempting to emulate the bollocks he spouts about diet.

First off don't fall on 5.0. The run outs are there because the climbing is easy and anyone on the route should be competent enough not to fall.

That said, depending on the severity of the fall, the distance from the ground/top and the condition of the climber/belayer there are a few options.

  • The climber could jug the line with hitches then anchor into the arch and climb after they are on belay again.

  • The belayer could lower the fallen climber to the ground if the rope will reach.

  • The belayer could tie off the device, escape the belay and rescue the climber with 3:1s or simply with a line for the fallen climber to rap on.

    Those are just some go to options but everything depends on the situation at hand. Also, don't take advice from anyone online, read this instead:

You shouldn't be thinking about falling in a way that keeps you from climbing hard. You should worry about it enough to know that your leg isn't behind the rope, etc.

His form sucks hard. He uses his physique (which is really good, no doubt) as a tool to charge other people, but if you see his videos, you're going to realize his technique sucks.

I was one of his subscribers, but when I started to really dig for knowledge in calisthenics, I realized how he doesn't know whatta hell he's talking about.

If you wanna spend money on something really good, buy the Overcoming Gravity 2 book.

Oh man, there are so many dimensions to fights I'm not sure where to start.

It's everything from intimidation, to players themselves policing the games. As funny as it sounds - fights actually ensure safer games and lesser injuries. How? If you know the 1.90m. 100kg. enforcer is on the ice, you will think twice about making a bad check or roughing up the star player that "goon" was put on the ice to protect.

Another important aspect is momentum and flow. If your team is down, if the fans are not really in the game and not giving that extra edge and push to their team, a fight actually riles up the whole building and sometimes even contributes to changing the pace up for your team and getting them all fired up and hungry.

There is actually a lot going on behind the scenes which casual observers of the game do not understand or notice about the fights. There is an unwritten "code" between all the enforcers and baring some very intense rivalries, most of them actually look out for one another and while the main purpose of a fight is to rough up the opposing fighter, it is never to injure them. There are tonnes of respect between enforcers and they know that for them, its just a job and its never personal, it's all about honor - your teams and your own.

In short - yes, the game (NHL Specifically) would change drastically if fights were outright banned as they are in, lets say, the Olympics.

This is a very interesting aspect of the sport and I could go on and on, but I would rather give you a straight up answer and highly recommend this book if you have further interest in researching the subject.

Pictures would help understand your situations but it sounds like you guys weren't actually building anchors but just running the rope through the rings at the top. Which is:

  1. A total pain for closed rings
  2. Frowned upon in most crags. The rings usually meant for a rappel or lower of the lead climber but not a group of people top roping. It can wear them out faster when you do this. Check with a local on ethics here.

    Based on your description it seems like you should have been able to build a simple 2 bolt equalized anchor with cord and four lockers (2x bolts, 2x for the rope).

    EDIT: frowned upon in MOST crags

    EDIT2: Absiel/Rappelling is apparently only a US Thing so stick to the lower off. The more you know

Clarification of terminology: "off piste" means off the groomed run, but it is often used to describe terrain inside resort boundaries. In the US, off piste runs within the resort have been checked and cleared of avalanche danger by ski patrol. "Backcountry" means terrain outside of resort boundaries which has not been cleared by ski patrol. It can slide and you can die.

The Cyclist's Training Bible is the go-to introduction to training concepts. It's probably information overload if you're just getting into the sport, but there's a ton of good information.

The Time-Crunched Cyclist is a really good introduction to interval training. You'd need at least an HR monitor to do the workouts. I don't follow Carmichael's plans in that book, but I did adapt it a little to fit my needs last summer.

A few pointers:

  • Buy once, cry once. This is gear that your life literally depends upon. Do NOT cheap out here.

  • Do some light reading followed by some heavier reading followed by some heaviest reading. FOTH in particular has a lot of good supplemental information on camp, clothing systems, reading terrain, etc.

  • Read a little more if you end up getting more serious than toprope/bouldering/sport climbing. No one makes you go out there, and no one is required to risk themselves to bring you home. Personal responsibility is big here.

  • Last but not least: Find out what YOU like. Do not buy cam brand X or rope brand Y or shoe brand Z because they look cool or your friend loves them. Try them yourself. There are pieces of gear I treasure that my partners hate and vice versa. Your gear needs will also vary by region. I use a completely different rack in the South West compared to the East Coast.


    Feel free to PM me with specific questions...I have over a decade of climbing/mountaineering and outdoor experience on everything outside of the Himalaya. Snowfields, Rock, Ice, Bouldering, Backpacking, summer, winter, poor weather, perfect weather...I've been there.

Depends how much effort you want to put into it.

For general baseball knowledge and history:

  • Watch all of Ken Burns Baseball (its all on Youtube).
  • Read Moneyball for an understanding of how modern analytics revolutionized the game and upended the status quo. (Some people are still fighting this fight, but among MLB front offices the nerds have already "won" basically).
  • Read Baseball Between the Numbers for a good primer on modern analysis (though there has been more progress since that book came out of course)


    For Dodgers specific history:

  • Watch the ESPN 30 for 30 on Valenzuela (Fernando Nation).
  • Read Jon Weisman's book about the Dodgers for a great overview of team history.
  • Read Molly Knight's book for a good narrative look at the current team and ownership group. This is great context for understanding how we got to where we are now.

    For current news and analysis:

  • Dodgers Digest is a great blog for level-headed, intelligent Dodgers analysis. The writers there know what they are talking about and aren't overly reactionary, as a general rule.
  • True Blue LA, the Dodgers SB Nation blog, is run by Eric Stephen who is the most diligent Dodgers beat writer today. In the off season for example, he's writing a season review for every player who appeared for the Dodgers in 2015.

read The Rock Warrior's Way. It's really important to work on your internal dialogue that runs in your head while you climb. Instead of think things like "don't fall," you need to be thinking only of your next move. The thing that has helped me a lot is warming up a lot on easier leads and focusing on doing every move really efficiently. This has helped me plan and execute moves on harder climbs without wasting movement and energy.

with that being said, getting over the fear of falling also requires that you do it. Keep at it and keep going!

As controversial as he is around these parts, Bill Simmons wrote a great book for beginners called "The Book of Basketball"

It's a history of the game from the beginning and a survey of the game's history. Now, it is biased, as almost any history of anything will be biased. But the nice thing is that you can easily spot the bias with Simmons. First off, he usually admits it upfront. But also he tends to overrate Celtics players and underrate Lakers. He also tends to overrate individual player achievement, while paying less attention to the luck of team construction and coaching... unless it suits him to do so.

Overall it's a great survey book for someone just jumping into the sport.

I guess the big two rules to know would be icing and offsides

Icing is when an offensive player sends the puck into the offensive zone from the far side of the center ice line. If the puck then crosses the red line in the offensive zone (the goal line, but not in the net) and a defensive player gets to one of the face off dots in that end, it is icing. Sort hard to explain so I hope that makes sense.

Offsides is when a member of the offensive team crosses the blue line into the offensive zone before the puck does. So basically the puck has to be in the offensive zone before any other offensive players can cross the blue line.

Now for fights... There pretty much an unwritten code about that. If you're really interested in the topic, I highly recommend the book The Code. Essentially fighting is a way for players to police the game themselves if necessary. Say if a player takes a cheap shot, you might have a fight to send a message to the other team. Also might be used to try to swing the momentum in a game if a team gets down a few early. Every now and then, theres a cheap shot one game, but it will be a few games later between the teams that everything boils over into a huge fight or sometimes even a line brawl.

Finally, something I can answer:

I have two books in my repertoire:

Bike Science 3rd Ed. - This breaks down the physics of what's happening. It goes in depth about materials, history, really everything bike related. It doesn't go into detail about makes and models though.

Zinn and the Art of Road Bike Maintenance - Where Bike Science is the why, Zinn gets down to brass tacks and gives you useful information on how to fix a bike (note that there is also a Zinn book for Mt. Bikes and triathlon bikes which I haven't read yet...). This is my go-to reference when something goes wrong with my bike.

BikeForums.net - So I don't know everything about anything but this is the place to do research. SRAM vs Ultegra? Trek vs Cannondale? Someone has already asked the question and it's on BikeForums somewhere. I trust people who've actually ridden/owned a bike I have a question about far more than some online review that was vetted by the manufacturer.

For maintenance guide, I really like the Zinn guides. There's one for road bikes and one for mountain bikes, but a lot of the content is the same.

I would also suggest attending a "bike maintenance 101" class. You can often find them through your friendly local bike shop or cycling collective, or sometimes your county DOT will offer them. Learn about avalanches and how to minimize their risk. Read Staying Alive in Avalanche Terrain. Buy a beacon and probe. Learn how to use them. Practice. The main slope I go to has a small patch where there's a buried beacon for practice. You could see if yours has one, too.

Learn to recognize dangerous terrain and signs of instability. Take an avalanche course. Make friends with experienced back-country skiers in your area. See if you can get a few buddies to take you on a mellow single day tour.

It is a compilation of his personal research into offenses and defenses, some of which were featured in Sports Illustrated articles. If you're interested in the evolution of the game and the why of certain schemes, this is one of the best reads out there. It also makes for terrific off-season reading.

Blood, Sweat, and Chalk is pretty good. It goes over the evolution of offenses from the beginning of football. It talks about who invented what and the lineage of some stuff. The book really explains the offensive schemes well. I thought it was an interesting read.

this will give you a good idea of where you want to start learning about the game. Be warned, the more you learn the more you're going to want to learn. All of these posts are about a specific scenario but I've been coaching for 6 years now and every scenario is different. You might not want to run screen against the blitz if you have the perfect run play for this team, this front, this time of the game. No two plays will ever be the same in the game of football and your script walking into the game is lucky to make it to it's 15 plays. You want to understand the system you've built and the one you're up against. This book will lay out some of the systems in football and the rest is up to you.

Nothing would make me happier than a sub reddit where we would all argue strategy instead of fantasy value or who's better than who. I hope you enjoy this book, it's a great read!

Japanese wrestling has such a storied history that it would be a fool's errand to try and write about it in an all encompassing manner. You're better off going company by company.

I am not really a fan of Italy or Serie A, and only sometimes like travel literature. This one was pretty good though. The writer is a long time Hellas Verona supporter and foreign correspondent in Italy. As a sort of travel book/football journalist he endeavours to not only see every home fixture, but also to travel across Italy for each away fixture and cup tie. This one is again fairly football heavy, rather than just using football as a mere way into another topic.

Then you don’t know football, friend. Today we remember the 96 people who died at Hillsborough. There are many reasons why we remember them. One reason is the politicized reaction to the events on that day, and how Liverpool fans and the city itself was pilloried by the establishment as part of a broader political narrative that had spanned decades before and after. (And some would argue that the public proponents of Brexit are the direct descendent of right-leaning politicians who generated and perpetuated the lies and injustices around Hillsborough. There’s a reason the (at the time) right-leaning newspaper we don’t discuss here is not discussed here.)

Speaking more broadly, however, I’d urge you to read How Soccer Explains the World by Franklin Foer (apologies for the US Amazon link if you’re in the UK!). That book does a great job charting the many ways in which football has been used by politics across the world, and fundamentally altered events in the world, far beyond the football pitch.

I don't climb nearly as hard as you do but when I went through a similar thing I went to the gym a few times and made it a point not to TR anything. I only lead so as I warmed up and then climbed harder I was inevitably falling. After a few trips I felt really confident on my leads. I've observed these self-defeating behaviors from all kinds of people who climb a very wide variety of grades... notably an almost-5.12-climbing friend of mine. The frustration threshold at which a negative attitude emerges varies for different people, and can totally shut down anyone's progress.

Unfortunately, my experience has been that you can't help these people much. I don't know if there is a way to convince someone to keep climbing, improve and overcome... they have to want it for themselves. I think part of the motivation comes from confidence - a conviction that they could become really good if they kept trying, but a genuine form of that only comes from within.

If you push her to do specific exercises, she will likely have a negative reaction to it. So I'd say only be her coach if she specifically seeks out coaching. Maybe the best thing for you to do is have fun with this person and try to make climbing enjoyable to her. Sadly, no shortcuts. Essentially she will take steps to improve on her own when she wants to.

Check out arno ilgner's rock warrior's way, though it might not be that useful to an early beginner.

Focus on yourself. If she doesn't want to be with you, it's probably (whether she can see it or not) something about you. Most likely it's your own insecurity that she can sense; women don't want to be with someone who isn't OK without them. You need to learn to stop thinking about whether you are good enough for her or not and learn to think about your own value and about what skills you have in your skillset that will help you be a better, stronger, happier lover in the future. If you do that, something amazing will happen; you will stop needing her to come back in order to be OK. Then she will either come back or she won't and you'll be able to step forward in your life regardless of what she does. Remember: the only thing you can control is yourself.

Consider supplementing your classes with some books. Bob Gaines new AMGA Manual, the classic Luebben climbing book, and Luebben's anchor book are all excellent. John Long has a new Trad Climbers Bible, haven't read it though. I find him wordy and often not as clear as others.

Note that Luebben suggests to spend a day every year climbing with an expert guide to make sure you're solid.

If you want a specific recommendation: BEFORE YOUR CLASS: Pick up the three books above and read them. Take notes on what you don't understand. Look to online forums and videos for answers. Buy some gear and practice placing the gear outside. Have a piece of rope you keep on your couch. Practice knots while watching TV. FOR YOUR CLASS: Once you've done this, then take a class with an expert. Bring all the questions you've come up with. Take notes and get your guides contact info so you can stay in touch after. AFTER YOUR CLASS, continue reviewing the books (which will make more sense), start climbing easy single pitch stuff outside, email new questions to your guide. Take an anchors course if it's available, particularly before getting into multi-pitch.

If you're going on a week long vacation with family, unless you're hiring a guide or have a friend/family member who really wants to get into backcountry -- you'd be better off finding a mountain with tons of great terrain and snow. Snowbird, Alta, Telluride, Jackson (if you're flying from TX), or Taos would top the list.

If you have a partner or are willing to hire a guide ($$$) then the first step should be buying this book, reading it cover to cover, and deciding if backcountry skiing is right for you.

Most people recommend Pat Kirwan's Take Your Eye Off the Ball. Some bits of it can be simplistic, but based off what you told me it should be a good read. It basically breaks down each position group chapter by chapter, and has some extra details about coaching, front offices, scouting, etc.

Exactly what I came to say. In one of the early sections of the book you're taught to chart a game; quick notes on formations and results that you can do in short hand between snaps. It's like keeping a score sheet at a baseball game and one of the things coaches do on the sidelines. If you do it yourself you'll very quickly learn to recognize whats about to happen on both sides of the ball and then start to learn where you need to watch to see what is really determining the outcome of the play.

It can get pretty dry and since it's almost entirely focused on the modern game it doesn't give a lot of context to go with it's technicality. If you're stalling out on some parts this might help, it's a more friendly initiation into the technical aspects. It's more a history of the major innovations (reinventions?) on each side of the ball and how each built on the last. It's a pretty good road map for what a scheme is all about and how each individual position has turned into what it is today. It will give you a pretty solid grasp on what be going on on the field so that Take Your Eye off the Ball makes more sense when it tries to tell you how to actually see it in the moment

It's a question that will have widely varying answers depending upon the specific 50k.

  1. Train for the course you will run. Easy road one? Great. Do marathon training plus a bit more, call it a day. On trails? You better run some trails (ideally on the course in question or ones that are similarly difficult in hilliness and technicality), get used to spending more time on your feet.

  2. Assuming trail: figure out what fueling you need for something like 1.5 * marathon worth of running (gels, solid food, water, etc.). Some people are fine with just more of the same, some people will want to avail themselves of the goodies at the aid stations. Just practice and see what works for you.

  3. Training...just find a plan that works for you. Many will have people start doing back-to-back runs on the weekend to boost mileage, harden your will, and get you familiar with running even when tired and cranky.

    Best single item of advice I can give someone taking that leap is go buy Relentless Forward Progress. RFP is a rock solid book with lots of great information on most every facet of ultra-running, including solid training plans.

I think some of your questions are subjective and open to personal opinion. So take my response as such.

  1. I think your bike is worth it to you and that's what matters most. (Honestly I think it was a good deal and a good bike.) What's more important, do you feel comfortable on it? Do you want to ride it? Than it's worth every penny. If you have a bike you don't want to ride, well, then the reverse is true.
  2. YouTube is your friend for maintenance. There are some things you can check without tools, such as chain stretch, checking the cassette for wear, seeing if your cables stick or are frayed. Give the bike a good wash, clean the chain, cassette, frame. Make sure your brakes don't stick or don't grab properly, shift through all the gears, front and rear. If they stick you can put some oil into the cable housings or consider changing out cables. Bike maintenance isn't hard, it's just getting past some of the black magic of making things just right. That can be the difference that a bike shop can bring. But honestly, if you know how to do it yourself, I think you gain confidence in your skills and can easily tweak something without relying on a shop.
  3. Anything is possible. It's a hard question to answer without knowing your current fitness level, but I'd say in a few months you can be ready for a century. Will you be breaking land speed records, probably not, but you will be able to do it. Just keep riding a bit longer or a bit harder each week. You don't need to do a century ride before actually doing one officially. You just have to find a pace you are comfortable with that you know you can ride for a long time. That's the pace you will need to finish a century. It's that "I could do this all day pace" that you are looking for in a long ride.
  4. I can't answer this one as I've picked up most of what I do with a few books and fellow riders. One book I enjoy is Time Crunched Cyclist by Chris Carmichael. http://www.amazon.com/The-Time-Crunched-Cyclist-2nd-Ed/dp/193403083X
    It's great for those of us who may not have the time to train like a pro.
  5. This is a subjective question again. A good cruising speed is what you are comfortable with. 32kph would be very respectable for a century and a good pace for any day to day ride. You'll need to get a feel for what you can handle however. Might have to build up to that, might find you can easily blow that speed out of the water.

If you are truly curious and you want to expand your knowledge such that you can more safely operate within a wider variety of top access scenarios, consider investing in some of these books:

  • Rock Climbing: Mastering Basic Skills
  • Rock Climbing: The AMGA Single Pitch Manual
  • Rock Climbing Anchors: A Comprehensive Guide Book

    Sure, you may certainly get by in life perfectly fine with substantially less knowledge, but if you are posting here with a question as thoroughly written out as the one you have here, you are likely interested in having a larger "toolkit" to feel more confident when approaching these types of situations. These books (among others) will, without a doubt, greatly enhance your anchor building and risk management "toolkit".

    Consider, for instance, that if you are carrying a static "setup rope" for top rope anchors, there are numerous ways to leverage it to establish both a high master point (away from the edge) and an instructor tether to allow yourself to control your movement around, near, and over the edge without exposing yourself to the risk of falling while you establish a low master point over the edge for a top rope anchor. Sometimes this may be overkill and sometimes it may be precisely what you need to feel confident in this type of situation. Having this knowledge on tap allows you to make more informed decisions.

    Two examples of these types of systems are

  • the backside system
  • and perhaps more awesomely the three in one.

    If you want to learn more about those systems, the SPI manual has a reasonable primer on each of them. Personally, I like the Donahue/Luebben Mastering Basic Skills book a little bit more if I had to pick one of the two, but you cannot go wrong with either one.

It's a statistical look at baseball and specifically focuses on quantifying the value of a lot of these ideas - e.g. how much benefit do you get from batting the pitcher 8th vs 9th (to give you an "extra" leadoff hitter), or something similar to your idea, a 6 or 7 man rotation where the 4th and 5th starter positions are actually a committee of relievers working ~3 inning "starts". Like you already know, it's an idea that really has legs because oftentimes non-elite starting pitchers are actually decent on their first go, but get bombed the 2nd and 3rd times through the batting order after the hitters have gotten a look or two on them.

Check out "The Time Crunched Cyclist" by Carmichael it's a great book.

You can effectively train for longer rides by doing shorter ones at a higher level of effort. My longest rides tend to be 60 miles (usually average 120-150/week) and I have no trouble doing a century. It can be done, you just need to do it right and avoid "junk" miles - every mile must count. As a roadie, I'm able to incorporate trainer rides as well during the week to ensure I"m targeting the right things. If you're riding a MTB, your approach will need to be different. After I complete 6 Gap century in Sept., I'm switching to 'cross and training for the Gravel Grovel in late Nov. I'll be doing more short max. effort intervals and VO2 max work and much less endurance-type training.

I'd really recommend starting with the beginner plan and swap in at least 30 mins of dedicated skills work on the Sunday easy miles ride. Most peoplebeginners don't/haven't put a lot of time in practicing barriers, dismounts, and run ups and you can really put the hurt on them if you're even halfway decent.

As I said above, I started with the beginner block and I felt like I started noticing results at about 7 to 8 weeks in to the plan...which fits with the planned 'peak' the training block is supposed to provide. So figure out what your important races might be and plan to start training 8 weeks out.

Races count as workouts, just make sure you're getting enough saddle time though. Eg, if your race is 30 mins and the day calls for 90 mins total, make sure you're getting that extra 60 between warmups, pre-riding, etc...go for a short ride when you get home if you have to.

What age are you? Officially masters start at 30 or 31, I forget. If you're going to a bigger race with a masters category you're going to get destroyed. You'll find lots of racers that used to be hard core Cat1s in there who are just looking for a win, along with a few people in the same situation you're in. I'd really recommend staying in the beginner category this season. If you haven't made the podium in the beginner category you're in no way ready for the masters. (Even if you had, I still wouldn't suggest it)

If you're looking into the more advanced stats I'd recommend the following:

A good place to get started is the Fangraphs resource pages. Just follow the tabs below the search bar/"follow us" section of the page. For my money, Fangraphs offers the most complete and well-rounded advanced stats out there and they don't use black box proprietary stats like Baseball Prospectus.

If you want to dive in a little more deeply, "The Book" by Tom Tango lays things out really well.

"Baseball Between the Numbers" by Jonah Keri is a solid read too.

Yeah definitely a classic. Just to clarify I'm definitely not saying that clutch is a real or important thing, as it has never been statistically proven so. However, the biggest finding in most of these studies (the one I'm thinking of is unfortunately not available online) is the correlationship between performing well in high leverage situations and patience at the plate. So to reiterate, it's not that I think Belt is clutch as much as I think that a player with Belt's approach should continue to do well in high leverage situations.

The climbing self rescue book is quite good. I don't actually know of any other ones though that is specifically climbing self rescue.

edit: I don't own it but this one looks pretty good. The difference is going to be in the pictures vs. illustrations. The pictures in the first one are pretty good but can be a little confusing. The illustrations in this one look clearer and might be easier to follow.

I would first follow several trad climbs and inspect your leader's placements. Then practice placing a ton of gear on the ground and practice making anchors on the ground. Get somewhat comfortable with placing cams and nuts, have your trad friends inspect them, and pull really hard on them while you're on the ground. Then do several mock trad leads where you're on top rope, but pretend you are leading. Connect yourself to your gear and jump on them while on top rope to test your placements. Then go lead a very easy single pitch route. Always have your more experienced friends give you critiques on your placements. When you feel comfortable leading pitches, building anchors, and belaying from the top, go lead a multipitch. Congrats, you're a multipitch trad leader!

These are basically the steps I followed, with my more experienced wife helping me all the way through, and it worked well for me. Now I'm leading 5.7/5.8 multipitch trad routes. I followed about 5 trad routes, mock lead about 5 routes, and placed a couple hundred pieces of gear on the ground before my first lead. Later on, I read through this book, and practiced the self rescue techniques, which was really helpful and made me more confident that I would be able to deal when the shit hits the fan someday.

I don't know if you're going to find much on training mental aspects of climbing in a bouldering setting. For most people, fear of falling and trusting gear are the largest mental barriers. The gear side we can completely ignore, because there's essentially no gear you need to trust. The falling side is the same as falling with ropes--take falls to train falls. Start small, gradually get bigger. On the other hand, it seems like most people are far more comfortable taking falls bouldering than they are leading, so if mentality on the sharp end is your ultimate goal, you just need to tie in and take falls.

The Rock Warrior's Way and 9 Out of 10 Climbers Make the Same Mistakes are both great books for climbing mentality, but again, the focus will be on ropes, not bouldering.

Seems like it has a pretty nice package of information.

I also checked out Dave MacLeod's book and Self-Coached Climber at the store, but I found this one most interesting, because it seems to have clear instructions on a lot of lead climbing stuff too (should be starting course soon).

Might get the Self-Coached Climber later (it has a DVD too), but it looked a bit text heavy. Dave McLeod's book is about fixing mistakes, but I don't feel that I have gotten to a level yet where this might be of interest (still progressing decently, imo).

Also, see if there are technique lessons available at your gym or see if you can start climbing with someone you feel is (much) better than you. Advice from some one analyzing your climbing specifically might net you faster results. I did a course to get to 5.10 level and it was a lot of fun and very helpful. It also helps me a lot in explaining new climbers what they should be looking for or trying in a structured manner.

Not a Saint, just visiting this sub but I'll throw in my two cents as well:

Play the game - Get involved as much as you can. Doesn't matter the level, just get playing. And, importantly, try to take up different positions when you play. Even though the game is the same, the role of a lone striker is very different to that of the right back, the playmaker is very different from the holding midfield, the left winger is different from the 'keeper and so on. It'll help build your understanding of the different roles at play on the pitch.

Computer games - Personally not sure about games like FIFA (if it works for you, go nuts) but I'd recommend some of the older manager games. Not because they were necessarily better than the ones around now but because they were a bit simpler. Not trying to be patronising but if I were trying to learn to play the guitar, I'd probably want to start with the rudimentary stuff before moving on to more complex issues, and that's kinda the case here. You can download Championship Manager 01/02 free and legally from their own website, something I recommend because of the clear and very intriguing insights into some of the game's inner workings like basic formations, player types and a rough idea of individual skill sets.

YouTube - Although I haven't gone too far into it myself, I'm absolutely certain there are a myriad very handy videos online explaining tactics on different levels. This is a nice introduction, and uMAXIT have some decent videos on basic tactical principles explained at a pleasant speed and with good visuals. When you've got the basics down (or maybe you already have), throw a quick butcher's at their videos on things like false 9's, gegenpressing and zonal/man marking.

Literature - Plenty, and I do mean plenty, of really good books out there. "Inverting the Pyramid" is interesting reading but will probably not provide you with too many insights into the modern game. I'd recommend reading that a little later.

For the history of the game, there is really only one bible - David Goldplatt's "The Ball is Round". It's a right monolith but it's well-written and very, very interesting reading. Once you get into the game, you might want to read up on a few of its greats' autobiographies - but all that in due course.

Online reading - At the risk of upsetting the reddit intelligentsia, I'd recommend you find some of the best personal blogs about your team and start reading them. Maybe even pop by the most popular message boards that aren't driven by points. The points made there are also more likely to be made by locals and so can give you an idea of what they think of it all (particularly with a club like Southampton which probably has a fairly modest global following compared to the so-called big clubs). By this I'm not saying you should stay away from here or not engage, not by any means. Just that it's a different world on the old message/discussion boards.

For news, I recommend this sub and NewsNow. Just be very aware that it's a link aggregator so there can be a lot of shit in among the good bits. You'll soon learn to avoid sites such as 101greatgoals, talkSPORT, TEAMtalk and the usual array of hacks but it's a good place to get an idea of what's moving around the club nonetheless.

Glad to hear your making the transition to the outdoors. It's an amazing and well worth while endeavor.

Honestly, i would take a class or go with someone well experienced. I know this is what a lot of people say and i might seem redundant, but it really is true.

The reason I stand behind my opinion is that it's not very hard to learn how to set up a top rope on bolted anchors and master that skill. The hard part is knowing how to keep your self out of danger during the process and if you get into danger, how to bail yourself out.

The gym is a very controlled and regulated environment. The outdoors isn't. When climbing outside, there are always unexpected issues and problems that you need to make a judgement call on. I would just recommend that you have a solid foundation of knowledge and at least some first hand experience from someone that you trust, before you potentially get into a situation over your head.

When i first started, this book helped me a lot to fill in any small gaps of knowledge. It is not a supplement for first hand experience though.

For the machete a Cold Steel kukri is an excellent option.

Field strip the MREs: here's how.

Get the Chinese military shovel instead, it's really awesome. Here's one link to buy it.

Would advise a Camelbak or other mini-backpack style hydration bladder, much better for mobility.

For the rope: get milspec 550 paracord.

Gorilla brand duct tape is advised.

For the multitool either SOG or Leatherman are excellent choices. A couple of good picks from each: SOG PowerAssist and PowerLock as well as the Leatherman MUT and the Charge TTi.

Check out 4Sevens for excellent quality flashlights - really these guys are among the best in the flashlight market.

For the gun I would advise a Ruger 10/22 with a folding stock for compactness. Add some 32 round interlocking magazines and a box or two of ammo (.22LR is cheap, they come in boxes of 500 or so).

I would also recommend a Red Cross multifunction solar/crank radio.

The SAS Survival Handbook and of course the Zombie Survival Guide would make good additions.

I also liked How Soccer Explains the World and The Blind Side. Neither is about statistics, but it takes a different look at these games.


Although not about sports, Fooled by Randomness is another great read that discusses looking beyond the surface numbers.

You might start with Bill Simmons' The Book of Basketball. Simmons is opinionated and says lots of things with which I disagree strongly, but he's always entertaining and the book is a great overview of the history of professional basketball. Once you are done with that, you can turn to books about specific players or eras -- just look at the list in that link marked "Customers Who Bought This Item Also Bought."

For a good first book, I recommend either Beyond Batting Average or Understanding Sabermetrics: An Introduction to the Science of Baseball Statistics or Baseball Between the Numbers.... All of those books provide good introductions to the subject

My favorite book would have to be, The Book: Playing Percentages in Baseball. Compared to the first three I mentioned, this book is a bit more complex, but I think it's the best because it's the most thorough.

Look into it. I do know some people that learned to lead trad from friends. If so, make sure you do the following:

  1. Follow a friend and inspect his placements as you clean them.
  2. Practice placing pieces while standing on solid ground, and have an experienced friend check out and critique your placements.
  3. If you can get two other people, try a "mock lead" on TR, with one person on TR belay and another person on lead belay. Make sure the TR belay is nice and loose and try hanging on a piece on your lead rope. Maybe even try a bit of a fall. If you can only get one other person, still do the mock lead, but trail the rope with no belay. You won't get the experience of weighting or falling on gear, but placing a piece while on the rock is still way, way different from placing a piece on solid ground.
  4. Read Traditional Lead Climbing by Heidi Pesterfield. Cover to cover. http://www.amazon.com/Traditional-Lead-Climbing-Climbers-Taking/dp/0899974422/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1309779139&sr=8-2

A double rope system uses two full length ropes, and you alternate clipping them into protection. This helps eliminate rope drag.

A twin rope system uses two full length ropes as well, but you clip both ropes into each piece of protection.

You will almost always be using a double rope rappel on any of your local crags. Single rope rappels are more dangerous and are usually used to rap down from the top of a crag to clean a route, photograph, ascend, etc. With the single rope rappel method, you will not be able to retrieve your rope from the anchors unless you use a smaller cord as a pull cord, although that is not a reccomended technique.

Hey man. The Friday New Climber's thread stickied at the top of r/climbing is a great place to ask questions and get advice. I use it all the time and love it.

How many days a week are you climbing? If you can go 3x a week you should see solid improvement. 1x a week really won't give you the time on the wall to see much improvement.

When people start, most of the time their footwork is horrific. There are lots of drills to improve feet which will probably help your climbing the most.

The full version of this DVD can give you lots of advice (be clever... google it and ye shall find).

Books that are helpful include "Self-Coached Climber" and "9 Out of 10 Climbers Make the Same Mistake." The Self-Coached Climber comes with a great DVD with drills to improve technique. I bet that's on youtube as well. Yup, it is.

Also, you should just try climbing harder routes. Pick a couple 5.10s that look fun and try to climb them when you come in to the gym. At first it might seem really difficult, but if you try them every time you come in, you will get better. After that, pick other 5.10s and climb those. Rinse and repeat. After that, try some 5.11s.

It's a good book for gaining a bit more overall awareness of how best to approach getting better at climbing, rather than just throwing yourself at harder and harder climbs until you can do them.

He also has a second book called Make or Break, which is centred around common climbing related injuries and how to avoid them (or recover from them).

If you haven't heard of it yet, I think you'd really enjoy the rock warrior's way. It's a wonderful book about how to focus and engage with fear in a methodical way. There's a follow-up of practical exercises in Espresso Lessons. Both these books put the whole thought process into the clearest words I've ever read or heard.

I don't know of any training programs geared toward just women. If you're really into a detailed training program, the Rock Climber's Training Manual is about as detailed as it could be. I've also used training techniques from How to Climb 5.12 and Rock Warrior's Way, which is more mental training than physical.

Slopers also tend to be hard for me. The key is really to pull directionally, so use your core to get your body close to the wall, then pull on the sloper toward your center of gravity. Don't try to grab it or crimp it with your fingers--you want as much skin on the hold as you can get.

As far as the shoes go, if you have a good amount of rubber left on the toes, keep using them! New shoes can give you a real mental boost if you want to get a new pair--maybe don't go too aggressive--maybe something like 5.10 anasazis or la sportiva miura lace ups.

There is no best routine for everyone. It all depends on your goals.

The RR is not the best routine for everyone. It's just a pretty balanced good routine for a lot of people.

But honestly, you already sound intermediate/advanced. You can look at the RR as a good structure (paired exercises, push-pull, vertical-horizontal) and try to borrow it's structure but modify for your strengths and goals.

I bought mountaineering freedom of the hills as everyone recommends, it's very comprehensive, so much so I end up using it as a reference.

One of my favorites is [Luebben's Rock Climbing Anchors] (http://www.amazon.com/Rock-Climbing-Anchors-Comprehensive-Mountaineers/dp/1594850062). I've used this one the most and to initially teach myself. Also have more experienced people look over your anchors.

People recommend John Long's Anchor book but I've never read it.

Remember to build and weight anchors ground level and place tons of gear on easy climbs when you're starting out.
I was always very redundant with gear and of course we practiced on low traffic climbs.

Get a buddy and go indoor rock climbing first, second and third. I love PRG. There you will learn several important things like the basic tie in knot, how to trust the rope and how to belay with a grigri. You will learn to use your whole body without trying to do pull ups. Its really pretty easy to get people to go indoor climbing vs outdoor, and then you can find the people who like climbing and you trust with your life.


If you are the kind of person who likes to read about things before going out and trying them, try this and if you want to do trad (not pre anchored sport routes) this.


When I first started climbing, I almost took a class here. If you don't have a bunch of indoor climbing experience, some experienced friend, or just a mind for detail and a crap load of overconfidence - take the class. I learned as I went with a few good friends, but there were a few lessons that we almost learned the hard way. Have fun up there!

Make an effort to get to know the people in your class, find people that have the same interests as you in the backcountry. Get their emails or whatever before the class is over so you can ski with them!

Do the reading and the homework they want you to, participate when they ask questions - normal classroom stuff. Make sure you're wearing warm and comfortable clothes when you're outdoors so you can focus on what they're teaching rather than staying warm.

Then, just supplement the material they provide. Get some books like Staying Alive in Avalanche Terrain and Snow Sense, go through some youtube channels [1] [2], there's even an avalanche podcast (Slide) now.

Get a 6 cylinder. If you really wanted to drive a four banger and save gas, get a civic.

I definitely plan to get into the back country sometime in the future, but I have a lot of learning to do before I'm willing to venture out to do anything serious. Colorado Snowpack is infamous for being some of the most deadly avalanche terrain on the planet. Adding a snow mobile into the equation increases avalanche risk exponentially. My best advice to you is to first invest in Avalanche Recovery gear (Beacon, Shovel, Probe). Familiarize yourself with your equipment, and practice with it regularly. Secondly, I'd advise you take at least a level 1 Avalanche Awareness Class. It can seriously be the difference between life and death. I'd really recommend giving Staying Alive In Avalanche Terrain by Bruce Tremper a read. It's incredibly informative and will be a great tool to begin familiarizing yourself with avalanche awareness and recovery before even setting foot a mountain.

Taking all of these steps to educate yourself may seem like a little bit much, but I'm not exaggerating when I say that Colorado Snow would love to kill you. Here is a story about a guy who died on New Years Day snowshoeing in the backcountry. He and his group did everything possible to avoid being caught, but despite taking steps to avoid the avalanche, and triggering his beacon, he was still killed after being buried in the slide. I can't say it enough, my man. Take the class. Read the books. You literally cannot learn enough when it comes to Avalanches and how to avoid them.

Tango et al, showed that historically the leadoff spot has far fewer PAs with men on base (36 percent, with no other spot below 44 percent) than any other lineup position, making it an ideal spot for a high-OBP but low-power hitter.

>Conventional wisdom says you put your best overall hitter third, and to this day most teams still do just that. Tango et al, point out, again with historical data, that when you consider the plate appearances each lineup spot receives, as well as the frequency with which each lineup spot gets each base-out situation*, a team's best hitter belongs in the No. 2 spot: It comes up about 2.5 percent more often over the course of a year, and generates more value with almost every way of reaching base due to who's typically on base and with how many outs. That is, a single or a double or a walk from the No. 2 hitter is worth more in run-scoring potential than the same event from a No. 3 hitter. The numbers are all very close, but the No. 2 hitter gets those extra 15 or so plate appearances a year, and the No. 3 hitter, on average, leads off the fewest number of innings, which is another reason not to put your highest OBP guy there.

>*There are 24 base-out situations: 0, 1, or 2 outs, as well as eight configurations of runners on base from bases empty to bases loaded. These are the 24 base-out scenarios found in a run expectancy table, that tells you how many runs you can expect to score given a number of outs and a configuration of men on base. It also tells you that giving up an out via a sacrifice bunt is generally stupid.

>These gains are small but real, and freely available to any team. What's a little less evident immediately from these studies -- again, I refer you to "The Book" for the data itself -- is the very real, almost binary benefit a team may get once or twice a year in the ninth inning from batting, say, Joey Votto second instead of Zack Cozart.

>According to Dan Szymborski, in nine-inning games the past 10 years, the last out was made by the No. 2 batter 11.7 percent of the time, about what you'd expect given nine lineup spots with a slight skew toward spots near the top. (A straight 1-in-9 shot would be 11.1 percent.)

>In other words, in about 19 games a year, the No. 3 hitter was left standing in the on-deck circle, forever alone. And shouldn't any manager who hits a guy with a career .283 OBP second (Cozart), ahead of a guy (Votto) with a career .417 OBP (.445 this year, .474 last year), be held accountable for that decision? Put your best hitter second, your next-best hitter fourth, your high-OBP/low-power guy first, and you get, in effect, free runs, maybe just a handful over the course of a season, but maybe that one marginal at-bat in the ninth inning turns into a very real, tangible win, the kind that teams are supposed to be pursuing anyway.

    I personally didn't follow any plan but made sure for the training to be specific - on trails similar to what I expected in the race and with similar elevation gain per mile. I focused on back to back long runs on weekends, a lot of climbing, and less on the distance. I don't think I ever did more than may be 45-50 miles per week for any of my 50 milers or 100K races but made sure to hit close to 8,000-10,000 ft of gain per week on my peak weeks.

Try rollers instead of a spinning bike or stationary trainer. They're a lot more interesting to ride, and like any indoor trainer, is great for structured training sessions with a power meter because you can hold a certain power level very consistently (compared to being outside on a real bike).

But yeah, it sounds like you are itching really hard to jump into the deep end. In that case, the power meter will be the best thing you'll ever buy for your bike :) And the FTP test will be one of, if not THE most miserable things you will do on your bike, so learn to embrace the suffering.

I'd highly recommend finding some software other than strava to use as well, it's pretty terrible for analyzing power data, and some of the power charts with Premium are just flat out broken. Personally, I use Training Peaks, but there are other options, and other free options.

Training with power is much more than generating big numbers and showing off to your friends. It's a great tool for tracking your fitness and fatigue over time to make sure you don't over train and peak at the right times. Look into Performance Management Charts and how they are used for training.

If you haven't noticed yet, you'll see this reference mentioned everywhere. Because it really is that good. It's exactly how I got started with my first build, and I know at least two others that started the same way. You need to know nothing more, and nothing less than what this man has written. I found that even the parts I didn't understand at first, later made sense after building a bicycle. It's wonderful. Next, check and see if there are any community bike shop cooperatives near you. They're bicycle goldmines, and nearly anyone involved will be happy to give you a hand. Most of them are ran by volunteers. If they didn't want to help you, they wouldn't be there. If you have access to a cooperative shop, and read through some Sheldon Brown, building your first bike is going to be awesome.

If you prefer paper references, I would also suggest this. Another very well written, knowledgeable guide for first time builders/tinkerers.

Buy this book - Zinn & the Art of Road Bike Maintenance. it's under $20 on Amazon. Couple of points:

  1. Amazingly comprehensive. Includes old stuff and new stuff.

  2. A book is great for having when actually wrenching. Way better than trying to scroll on your phone with greasy hands.

  3. All tasks are broken into three levels of difficulty. The first level is for people like you, and you'll be pleasantly surprised how much that covers. Has tool recommendations for each level.

  4. Most tools don't need to be bike specific. A set of Allen keys, needlenose pliers, and an adjustable wrench will get you further than you think.

I've used different methods: (1) find a patient belayer willing to belay you on top rope while you climb and set gear. I have one good buddy who had done a lot of trad back in the day but wasn't interested in leading any more so this approach was great because he was experienced enough to check my gear and give advice. (2) set a bunch of gear and build anchors while on the ground. (3) bring along some trad pro while sport climbing and try to find somewhere to place it even if it's unnecessary. (4) while seconding and cleaning look closely at the gear you're taking out and understand why it was placed however it was. (5) a lot of reading - the books on anchor building by John Long and Craig Luebben are great. I prefer Luebben's because he tends to be more descriptive of why certain placements are better/worse.

Lots and more literature, but it basically breaks down to:

  1. climbing (often trad)

  2. anchor building (sometimes with bolts, sometime not)

  3. belaying from either above or below

  4. gear management (much more complex than single pitch)

    Seconded on Mountaineering: Freedom of the Hills as a great overview of all of this (and much more).

    My favorite anchor management book is Rock Climbing Anchors: A Comprehensive Guide

    EDIT: and of course the usual caution. Don't try this without proper instruction.

One thing that's worth mentioning is that aspect does not effect risk. Aspect has the potential to effect hazard as illustrated by all the other answers here. Hazard in terms of avalanche terrain is the probability of an avalanche release and expected avalanche size. Risk, is up to you - and how much exposure you have to that hazard depends on your travel plans. If a huge avalanche is very likely to happen, and you are no where near then there's no risk.

For example, let's say we are at the tail end of a storm cycle with winds out of the south for the whole storm in your terrain. We may assume that the north slopes will be more heavily loaded with the new snow. In the morning, the avalanche advisory states that north facing slopes have high avalanche danger for the day, south facing slopes have moderate avalanche danger. You can mitigate your risk by choosing your travel plans wisely. If you choose to ski north slopes you'll be increasing your risk to the hazard, if you choose to ski south facing slopes you'll reduce your risk. You reduce your risk by limiting, controlling your exposure to the hazard.

Hazard + exposure = risk.

Programming is a tool. I suggest finding another interest that you can apply it to. Robots, graphics, music, animation, sports, economics -- the possibilities are endless. Pick your favorite area, look at what kind of problems there are in that area that people use programs to solve, figure out how those sorts of programs work, and try to solve some of those problems yourself.

A few interesting examples:

  • Project Euler has a set of challenges relating to both math and computer science that will stretch you to learn more about both.
  • Python Challenge is basically a series of puzzles that challenge you to do new and interesting things with Python. Granted, several of the puzzles are quite similar and some of the libraries they reference are deprecated, but it's a place to start for programming challenges.
  • Programming Computer Vision With Python talks all about using programs to do things like find objects in pictures and track them even at different sizes and angles. Lots of great examples.
  • Programming Collective Intelligence talks about putting together data from different sources (primarily websites) and finding patterns. It deals with many machine learning concepts in ways that are practical and interesting. Things like modelling and predicting, optimizing, clustering (finding similarities), searching and ranking, and pattern recognition.
  • Arduino Robotics describes many robots you can build with relatively common parts that can be programmed using the inexpensive, C-based Arduino microcontroller platform. I've made several of these myself.
  • Digital Signal Processing is all about writing software that takes advantage of advanced math to manipulate signals in many ways. It's invaluable for audio, but you see it used with graphics, digital communications, and many other areas.
  • There is a subset of sports fans that really enjoy statistics and software can be very valuable for them. Things like comparing players across eras, predicting future performance, and helping to find high-value players. The general field is called Sabremetrics. I looked deep into it in relation to major league baseball. Two books that I found valuable are The Book: Playing the Percentages in Baseball and Baseball Between the Numbers.
  • Programmable games are cool too. Things like CROBOTS, CoreWar, RoboWar, and Robot Game. It's just as fun building the simulation environment as it is building the bots that compete within them.
  • Pick up any book on algorithms. Learn to apply the basics like binary search, insertion sort, radix sort, memoization and linear programming, Dijkstra's algorithm, and Newton's method for root finding.
  • Grab another book on data structures. Make sure you understand the differences between arrays, linked lists, hash tables, and trees. Learn about unique and useful things like binary trees, radix trees, heaps, and queues.
  • Learn how to write better code. I recommend books like Code Complete and The Pragmatic Programmer.

    Whatever you do, as you clearly pointed out, you have to be interested in it or you'll grow bored and give up. Find something that is interesting to you and pursue it as wide and deep as you can.

Moneyball helped me enter the world, but actually reading fangraphs has been really good. There's a glossary that's pretty good whenever I see someone commenting on some stat I don't know about.

I'm reading The Book. It's a bit less prose and a bit more...baseball research essay-feeling, but it's interesting. It does get mentioned kind of often when people start asking about advanced stats.

The Fangraphs leaderboards are hugely helpful for quick analysis. You can use the custom leaderboard feature at the bottom to combine leaderboards for different types of stats - for example putting BB%,K%,FIP, alongside Pitch F/X and batted ball stats. And you can export any leaderboard into Excel. I've spent countless hours over the past 5 years with that stuff.

Not sure how much research/reading you've done, but I'd highly suggest reading The Book by Tom Tango and MGL. It will give you an excellent base level understanding of how things work.

The Fangraphs glossary has helpful explanations of how stats work.

Another worthwhile research tool is Baseball-Reference's Play Index. It's worth the subscription fee.

If you want to go to the next level with Gameday data, you'll need to set up an SQL database. You can download all the data updated daily from Baseball Heat Maps. This is where you can really get into things, but it requires database skills.

If you want to do Pitch F/x without getting into databases, [Brooksbaseball] (http://www.brooksbaseball.net/) is the best tool around.

Really depends what your budget is for a gift - a book is always good, but if you're wanting to spend more maybe you could get him tickets to a game and go with him? Getting him out of the house would probably be a good thing to encourage.

That is a hell of a thing to go through, and I don't meant to do that "OH, you're depressed? Have you tried having fun?" thing... But I'm sure you get the idea. Sometimes it is helpful to do things with family/friends even if you won't exactly be footloose and fancy free, it's a step in the right direction.

The easiest would be to just go to a local bike shop, ask them what needs to be done, and have them do it.

It sounds like you are interested in getting your hands dirty and doing the work yourself. In that case, the usual advice would be to get to your nearest bike coop, take one of their bike maintenance classes or rent space in their shop and have someone help you out figuring out what you need to do and how to do it. But it looks like your closest bike coop might be in Sacramento, which is a bit of a hike. There is apparently a guy in Chico who is in the process of starting a bike coop, so you might want to try contacting him.

Beyond that, you can try striking out on your own. A few good resources for learning about bike maintenance are Sheldon Brown's website (ignore the crappy 90's style design, he has tons of good information on his site) and the Park Tool website (they have lots of good repair info, and they will sell you all of the tools you might need). If paper is more your thing, then good beginning books would include Zinn and the Art of Mountain Bike Maintenance, Zinn and the Art of Road Bike Maintenance, or the Park Tool book. And I know you've already been redirected to /r/bicycling from AskReddit, but for bike repair questions, /r/bikewrench might be more helpful (check out the sidebar here on /r/bicycling for links to FAQs and other relevant subreddits).

As far as not riding like a douchebag, if you ask 10 cyclists you'll probably get 11 different answers (and if you ask non-cyclists, you will probably get a lot of dangerous advice). There will be endless debates as to whether it's OK to run red lights, whether you should pass on the right or split lanes, whether bike lanes are a good thing or not, whether you should wear a helmet, etc. Some of the more universal tips: ride with lights at night. Don't ride on the sidewalk. Don't be a bike salmon (riding the wrong way in traffic). Be predictable. I find that BicycleSafe.com has some practical tips on safety without getting too much into the endlessly debatable points.

And finally, welcome to cycling! I hope you enjoy it; it can be a lot of fun, get you some exercise without even really trying, and is so much cheaper and less hassle to deal with than driving a car.

Past that, I like Zinn and the Art. He has some great illustrations that really see you through some situations.

Also useful is Park tools webpage. It is basically the BBB (Big Blue Book) in electronic form.
Don't be afraid to spend on tools - they are invaluable. Just use your mechanical intuition, and think things through before doing them.

The best way to think of it is this, you can judge your fitness based on a few things: Speed, Heart rate, or watts.
Speed is the simpliest(I'm getting faster! I'm not getting faster.) but it can be effected by a lot; wind, terrain, drafting, aerodynamics, ect.
Heart rate is the next when used with speed(I'm getting faster and my heart rate isn't exploding!) but like speed it can be effected by alot too. Are you sick today, not rested, to much caffeine, along with all the things effecting speed. There is also a lag between effort and heart rate(If you do a 30sec or less effort your heartrate will only see a change near the end or after.
A power meter or watts is the most effective. In short if you are producing more watts, you will be going faster, longer or both. And the things that effect speed does not effect watts. And unlike Heartrate there is little to no lag since it is measuring the effort you are doing.

I'd suggest reading Joel Friel has some great books about using power meters: Training and Racing with a power meter or Powermeter Handbook

Played basketball for 15+ years which I would say attributed to my fast twitch muscle fibres.

With structured training you'll see your FTP increase heaps. As others have mentioned, get a copy of Training and Racing with a Power Meter, by Hunter Allen and Andrew Coggan.

Other option is get a coach which will help heaps too !

Considering this is all in build up for IM Chattanooga(longer race and in sept) I would try to find a training plan for IM distance and let that carry you up to half IM in the next 12 weeks. george-bob's suggestion of triradar is good but you can also take a look at http://www.trifuel.com/triathlon/ironman-workouts/ and http://www.beginnertriathlete.com/discussion/training/training-plans-view.asp?planid=33&memberlevel=1 . It isn't so important which plan you pick. Just pick one and try to stay consistent with it.

Power2Max. I was holding out for the Garmin Vector but gave up waiting. They ended up shipping 6 months after I got my Power2Max. Still, I'm very happy with it. The other bonus for me with the Power2Max is that I was already running a Rotor crank and just needed to replace the spider which kept the power meter to about $1,000 taxes and shipping in. However, replacing the spider on the crank was a feat in and of itself. Brutal. Turns out its something Rotor does not support. - i.e., if you screw up your crank while taking the factory spider off, they won't support you. In the end, it turned out OK. (key: Use a hair dryer to heat the spider up)

It is completely justified. Just for the ability to use it indoors using TrainerRoad makes it worth it by itself (for me). Also, after upgrading my Strava account to premium, all of the additional training features that require a power meter are great.

I've just started reading/following the Training & racing with a power meter as well which I hope brings positive results...

i've heard that coaching really helps you improve, but it sounds kind of like a book would be sufficient for your needs.

perfect for me because i don't have lots of time, and that book aims for about 7 hours a week max except for the endurance mtb program. and, this book has a cyclocross specific workout plan. i have gone from finishing bottom 25% of 4/5 to being competitive 3/4. i have also learned what my strengths and weaknesses are and am focusing on those before getting back into mtb season.

Time Crunched Cyclist by Chris Carmichael got and kept me in race shape for a couple years. Lance Lance Lance yadda yadda yadda, it worked for me. His workouts are really no longer than 1.5 hours tops--you can shorten them by trimming or removing warm up/cool down, not advisable, I know, but everyone runs late every now and again. Trying Friel's workouts this year, but not seeing improvements at all so I may go back to carmichael and try to salvage something.

EDIT: But time of day-wise, I would suggest early morning.

The industry has really moved toward this as a way away from custom bikes. Once they had a lot of fit data statistics, some of the bigger companies actually adjusted their sizing philosophies, too. There's more to it than height and inseam. CompetitiveCyclist.com has a fit calculator that will have you do the measurements of each joint, etc. That's close but it's not a substitute for a pro fit.

I just (last week) bought a new bike by mail order. Know that if you do this you will have to have some (but honestly not a lot) mechanical ability to put it together and get it running and adjusted.

The mechanic I'm usually talking to is a right sweetheart, but he's not been in the job for long. I've seen them checking YouTube-videos for guidance on how to fix everyday tasks on common parts, like the Shimano Tiagra handle assembly. When I think about that, I'm not too surprised over the situation, to be honest.

I never cross chain. I always have the chain on the big ring and small gear, or vice versa. Despite this, the chain rubs. I've bought this book, and will try to see if I can't fix it myself before I turn it in.

Soccernomics by Simon Kuper and Stefan Szymanski has been an interesting read so far, if you're interested in the business side of the game. Another good one was How Soccer Explains the World: An Unlikely Theory of Globalization, which was comprised of case studies that looked at all sorts of different trends in the game, not just globalization.

Both of those books are well-written and -researched and offer good insights, and give historical contexts for, trends in the game.

Its not like football- there is one big important cup (trophy, here) and this is the NBA championship. The FIBA and Olympics are there, and its something to watch, but its not as interesting/fun as the NBA season. Mostly because US is usually very dominant.

David Halberstam is probably the most well-known NBA author in long-form content. "The Breaks of the Game" is an incredible account of the Blazers 79-80 season. "Playing for Keeps" is a narrative about MJ's career and impact. These are older works though.

As far as newer stuff, the Bill Simmons "Book of Basketball" is a monstrosity that has amazing in-depth content, provided you like Simmons.

The "FreeDarko Presents: The Undisputed Guide to Pro Basketball History" is from 2010 and has amazing artwork and a unique perspective. I would highly recommend it.

Here's a couple of books that i found useful when learning. For the cost of your class, you could buy some gear. I bought my rack and went out and started leading the easiest things i could find. I asked my partners to look at my placements and didn't climb anything where i wasn't at ease fiddling with my placements. After a season of this, i spent a day with a small group climbing with a guide and a pro climber. It was really useful then to have someone evaluate my placements and look at my technique. In short, spend the money on a rack. Get out and play with it.

I strongly suggest to pretty much anyone interested in climbing outdoors to read up on climbing rescue and self-rescue. Once you have a solid grasp on the techniques, test them out in a gym setting. Knowing how to properly lock off a belay device, take the tension off of it using a friction hitch above it, then escaping the belay to ascend the rope can literally save a life. I've heard that if a climber is unconscious and upside down, in general he has about 15 minutes to live. This means that a good grasp of these techniques is critical to ensuring the survival of the climber is such situations.

Do everything (full body) three times a week, focusing on lots of compound exercises. Splitting up a routine when you only workout 3 days a week means you work each body part once a week maybe twice if you're lucky. Over the course of a year it's a significant difference.

Say you go with push/pull one day and then legs training each twice a week, which is actually four days of training. Over 52 weeks you would only train deadlifts 104 times. With a full body workout you would be up at 156, potentially six months ahead of option A after a year. Obviously your overall volume and endurance levels and other variables come into play but I would give serious consideration to this option if that's all the time you can spare.

It goes through the history of Football in each region and how they are connected. Unfortunately, I don't remember WHY soccer didn't catch on but I remember something about local cultures that were occupied by the british would play to emulate the british soldiers.

It's a very good book if you want a book detailing the spread of the history of the game. It cover it's roots, how it spread, how the major leagues came about, a general history of every continent, the world cup, etc. It's kind of a brick, but covers a lot of ground and is a good cornerstone if you are interested in the history of the game.

When football came to America there were 2 popular versions at the time rugby football and asSOCiation football (which the British shortened to soccer often adding an er to many popular phrases at the time) the rugby style was more popular and eventually evolved into what we know as football. And association football just became soccer.

I got First Aid For Dogs because I probably wouldn't go anywhere without my dog and I want to be able to take care of him like he's part of the family.

I'd say that Ed and Jack there are a bit overzealous. You SHOULD have these books and be reading them before SHTF but the idea that books are worthless is... stupid, frankly. In the first 72 hours? Sure. You need to KNOW what you're doing to make it through the first couple days. But if the power goes out or something, what else are you going to do? You're gonna get bored and keeping your mind busy is a big step toward not going crazy. Keeping your mind busy on stuff that will HELP rather than sudoku makes a lot more sense to me.

Anyway- First aide, food, resource storage/gathering, and defense are the ways to go, IMO.

Don't get fooled by the title. This is a soccer book, but it's not really about soccer. It's a collection of weird and interesting stories connected to the game.

Think of it as if your kid was playing on the field. Would you boo them off, or keep cheering them on, even if they were having a bad day. Cheering as reward vs cheering as incentive.

Besides that, if you "get slapped around like a little girl on the field" you actually get rewarded for your failure with higher draft picks. In Europe, failure is punished by dismissal from the top leagues and the corresponding loss of money. No Club has the absolute right to play anywhere, unlike the franchise system with its closed leagues and exclusive markets.

At least we agree that there are cultural differences: Centuries of conflict and strife in the old world are represented in the political, religious, and social identities attached to different soccer clubs.

A club like Barcelona represents a centuries-old ideal of Catalan freedom from the oppressive monarchists of Real Madrid. Celtic are Republican Catholics vs the Loyalist Protestant Rangers, and in Eastern Europe you get communist vs anti-communists, vs militarists vs secret police etc. Your club represents and validates your identity and belief system. This is one of the reasons why there is so much passion for the game.

The book How soccer explains the world touches on that a lot, I know what you're saying. Religion, class, power, and money all play into football club support and for a lower class game it makes sense why the support would be more significant. But my point isn't just that it's a game. For some people it means a lot and that's ok. Crying at the end of a football match isn't over the top. Feeling gutten and having your day ruined by a bad result isn't obsessive. Pouring money and time into a club and having a very narrow view of the world is. If that's all you do or all you're involved in I think that's a problem. Rich or poor you can have other hobbies, other things in your life that matter. If all you do is talk football, watch football, analyze football, complain about football, and spend money on football, then it becomes a problem

If you're the reading type, The Book of Basketball is a good, fun read that covers a lot of ground.

As a Canadian, the Raptors are a fun team to watch (for now), and since you grew up in the country you won't be considered a bandwagon fan at all. Since Vancouver is so close to Seattle, that would work too, but unfortunately that team moved to Oklahoma a decade ago or so. If you think you'll watch basketball for a while, it may be fun to choose one of the young (promising??) teams like Philadelphia, Minnesota, the Lakers (don't choose the Lakers), or Milwaukee cause you can watch them grow and mature over the next couple years.

Honestly, the game is SUPER fun to watch right now, but it's a little weird because Golden State and Cleveland are so much better than everyone else in their conferences. I thought GS would have to break up for $$ reasons, but players (Durant) took a paycut to keep the core together, so they'll be absolutely dominant for a couple more years at least.

All that to say, it's an exciting time to jump into the NBA! The game has changed a TON in the last few years (faster pace, blending of positions) and looks to continue evolving quickly in the next couple years. Welcome!

Here's some recommended reading:

  • The Book - That's literally the name of the book. It's full of one-off chapters covering a variety of topics.
  • Baseball Between the Numbers - This one is also a bunch of one-off type stuff
  • Moneyball - Talks about how the 2002 Oakland A's capitalized on some offensive statistics that were being recorded but not heavily utilized to determine player values, and thus built a playoff team from undervalued hitters
  • Big Data Baseball - Talks about the 2013 Pittsburgh Pirates and their use of big data strategies to find defensive value where other teams didn't (primarily in pitch framing, ground-ball pitching, defensive range, and shifting)

    The first two of those are heavily focused on the numbers and will probably teach you more about the whys and hows, while the second two are more about the narrative but still give you some insight into hard numbers.

    Also, I'd recommend just joining SABR. It's $60/year for most people, but if you're under 30 it drops down to $45/year. There are a lot of local chapters out there that have regular meetings. For example, the Twin Cities have the Halsey Hall chapter. There's a book club meeting on Saturday (to talk about Big Data Baseball), a hot stove breakfast in a few weeks (informal meeting to just hang out and talk baseball), a regular chapter meeting in April for people to actually present research, and the chapter occasionally has organized outings to minor league games.

    SABR also has a national conference and a specific national analytics conference, as well. Membership also includes a subscription to Baseball Research Journal, which comes out twice per year and contains a lot of really good stuff that members have been written both from a statistics and a history standpoint.

Also, I've only seen Moneyball once and thought it was a pretty mediocre movie. They got rid of the actual baseball analysis (that definitely would have bored most people) and added a ridiculous conflict between Art Howe and Billy Beane that never existed.

Look, dude, I get it: hearing that the VAST majority of people in the field are realizing that your way of thinking is wrong is a SCARY thought; you've believed something to be true most of your life and all of a sudden other people are telling you with OBJECTIVE ANALYSIS that you are OBJECTIVELY WRONG. The good news is that it's not too late for you to open yourself up to the GOOD NEWS. Do yourself a favor: pick up this book

Check out Baseball Between the Numbers. Outstanding look at statistics in baseball and how they are often misused. One of my favorite chapters was about how Pete Incaviglia was more valuable running the bases than Rickey Henderson during his 130 steal season. Really interesting stuff throughout the book.

As far as improving your headgame goes, leading easy but long runouts is super helpful, as well as falling onto (well-placed) gear. Alpine multipitch is an admirable goal, but it is a far cry from what most people think of as trad climbing. You should be confident on long runouts, with potential no-fall zones. There are a lot of skills that are important for alpine climbing that often are not learned in a typical trad climbing mentor relationship, such as self-rescue, alpine route finding, and depending on your goals, snow climbing skills. There are several ways to learn these skills such as books or hiring a guide. Ultimately, your safety is much more dependent on yourself when alpine climbing. I say this not to scare you away from alpine climbing, as it has been responsible for some of the most amazing memories I have, but it has also been responsible for some of the scariest.

Some books that you might find beneficial:

Climbing Self-Rescue - Just what it says in the title.

Vertical Mind - I found this book useful for improving my head space.

Training for the New Alpinism - Probably the best book to help a climber transition into the backcountry.

As far as advice, just get as much mileage on lead outdoors as you can, with 1-2 indoor bouldering sessions per week. If it doesn't impact your bouldering, you could add a couple strength sessions as well. If you want to get into alpine climbing, or even just multipitch climbing, practice your systems at the top of single pitch routes. Belay your partner from the top, practice building an anchor at the top off of the bolts, set up simple pulley systems. Just spending 15 minutes per session will help you get muscle memory down for when it really matters.

Edit: As you get into more alpine climbing, you should increase the strength training and cardio. Climbing efficiently after four hours walking with a pack full of gear and food is harder than it sounds. Increasing your physical strength will reduce the mental load a lot, allowing you to think more clearly and be more confident.

Your library might even have a copy. Also, look for a copy of Freedom of the Hills. 8th is the latest, but 6th & 7th are not all that old.

For navigation, eventually you'll want to be able to pinpoint & track yourself along a bare hillside, no trail.

Simple comfort & awareness, especially, I have found consists of a lot of trial and error. Learning when to switch layers to stay warm but not sweaty. How to pack a heavy pack. Where to find water. Knowing when you're getting dehydrated. Plenty of this can be learned on ordinary hilly trails, no massive peaks required.

I know some of these skills will be quite difficult to work on living in the city, but they're a super important place to start, and you don't need to hire a fancy guide to teach you. Plus, if you do take a class like you linked, you'll get a lot more out of it if you've already learned a lot of the fundamentals yourself. Be the guy who already knows how to tie every knot, knows exactly where he is on the map, and is comfortable in the environment. Don't be that guy who is too busy learning how to tie munters and clove hitches to pay attention to crevasse rescue practice.

Others have mentioned key points. Getting comfortable with such things like multi-pitch sport (to get into the mental headspace), single pitch trad (need that gear knowledge), multi-pitch trad with bolted anchors (last step before going for completely trad).

What I'll add, and this is good for all climbing disciplines, is knowing some self-rescue techniques. Its just good stuff to know.
This book and this one are both good options. It will in general up your confidence in the mountains.

Best bet would probably be some kind of Wilderness First Aid course along with learning some rope rescue skills.

If you're in an area with lots of backcountry activities close by, finding a Wilderness First Aid course shouldn't be an issue. There's also tons of information online and in books to read up about, though book smarts are no substitute for putting those skills to the test in mock scenarios (which is hopefully the extent you'd end up using those skills in).

For rope rescue, depending on where you are, local guide companies, outdoor centres, etc. likely have rope rescue courses you could take.

In regards to rope rescue books, I can't personally recommend a specific one, but a bunch of books on the topic exist such as this one. Though I'm sure someone else here can recommend a book they've personally read.

Also based on your Canada flair, joining the Alpine Club of Canada would be a great idea. Your local chapter would likely offer tons of opportunities not only for courses such as first aid and rope rescue, but also organized climbing days along with various other activities.

Maybe this is too practical - but I expect all my partners to at least know the basics of self rescue. This is a great supplement to taking a multi day rescue class. They can be expensive but worth EVERY dollar.

Sounds like you did a very strenuous move at one point. Do you ever throw for a move with your arm completely extended and jerk at the shoulder/upper arm as you catch it? Do you climb with bent arms often? Either of those may be to culprit.

First and foremost - focus on your footwork. Think of relaxing your grip and climbing with relaxed, straight arms whenever possible. You should constantly be engaging, and pushing with your feet first (to take pressure off your arms); then rotating, and pulling with your lats diagonally across your chest to maximize reach while using a larger muscle group.

Work on as many easy problems as possible in your next training session while making sure every movement you do is static and based on technique, rather than power. No jerking; just relaxed, comfortable movements. Every movement you do should be as efficient as possible. To get a sense of what I'm talking about, watch strong female climbers - they typically have far better technique than most men.

Work on Antagonistic muscle exercises, specifically the extensor muscles in you arms; this will help prevent injury.

Do Reverse Wrist curls religiously before each workout and Wrist Pronators after - these work the forearm and elbow to help prevent tendinitis in the elbow.

Alternatively, you can do rice bucket exercises. These are excellent exercises to prevent injury and increase overall stability in the wrists, elbows, and forearms. Some gyms use large buckets of sand - same deal.

You're working a lot of pull muscles in climbing -always be sure to work the opposing muscles to round-out this increased volume. Try to do 2 sets of dips or push ups every other day to even this out.

Also, if you REALLY want to get better then watch some climbing videos. You'll start to subconsciously soak up the techniques top-level climbers use and then you'll say to yourself, "Hey, this move's kinda like that one I saw in the video!" Watch the great movers and shakers. Also, consider getting the book 9 out of 0 Climbers Make the Same Mistakes

EDIT: Also, this is Lynn Hill - the first PERSON to ever free climb The Nose on El Cap. She's truly incredible. Listen to what she has to say - it's something climbers will go for years before realizing.

EDIT2: You likely shouldn't be Hang-boarding if you're a beginner - you're going to get injured. Climbing on the holds themselves are the best training for finger strength right now. As you progress, hang boarding will have more of a return on your time spent.

Also, you shouldn't be doing multiple sessions in a row. Your body needs time to rest, and if you're constantly stressing it, it'll never improve.

Again - training does not make you stronger, it only initiates the growth process. REST is where that growth is made. You'll come back stronger after a periodic rest between sessions.

I've never done a course inside, but I've done a couple of winter climbing courses outside (notes: course 1, course 2), and they were totally worth it. I had a great time and have used lots of the stuff I learned. A friend of mine did an "advanced movement" course at her local gym and claims it helped her technique a lot, particularly on steep terrain.

You might find the books The Self-Coached Climber and 9 out of 10 Climbers Make the Same Mistakes helpful. The first covers the nuts and bolts of technique and training; the second is more about how best to make use of the limited climbing time you have, and how to avoid getting stuck in a rut.

I broke my collarbone 2 years ago. It gave me new appreciation for being able-bodied. One of the first things I did with this new appreciation was try rock climbing. Life has a strange way of turning that frown upside down. Oh and "9 out of 10 climbers make the same mistakes" is a nice easy read to motivate you upon recovery.

I once got told that the thing holding me back from climbing was that I didn't want it enough. Which pissed me off but I listened. I read 'The Rock Warrior's Way' (http://www.amazon.co.uk/The-Rock-Warriors-Way-Training/dp/0974011215) which was amazing, it literally gave me no fear. The downside was that in my no fear state I attempted a 5b trad grit route and fell way above my gear, twice, the second time my gear popped and I was inches from decking. Now I think a small amount of fear of heights is quite useful and I stopped reading the book....

The Rock Warrior's Way describes a great technique for getting over a fear of lead falls that you can apply to this.

Basically, clip into an autobelay, Climb 5 feet up, and fall. Then climb 7 feet up and fall. Then climb 10 feet up and fall. etc etc.

It's all about building trust in the mechanical system. You don't trust it now because you're not used to it. Once you build up familiarity with the feeling of the system working perfectly as intended, you won't have that feat of the unknown when you're high up and feeling like you're gonna fall.

I'm doing the program by Coach Sommers currently but I have experience with Steven's program as well since I have the first edition of his book.

I like Coach's program because you don't have to mess around with details, you can just buy the program (or borrow it from a friend) and get to work. Also, the mobility sections are absolutely amazing! The bad parts are that Coach himself isn't very friendly in my opinion and most of his experience is working with children. This is potentially not good because training children and training adults is totally different.

Steven's book is fine too and I believe the new edition tackles things not in Coach's program such as the Human Flag and some other cool skills. In my opinion, the first edition isn't really put together that well compared to Coach's product in terms of content and design. But the 2nd edition may have fixed these issues. He doesn't have as much experience as Coach but he is a much more friendly character and helps people out on many different forums.

Hard choice since both will get you to a planche but choose wisely! Have fun!

I find that my new coach's look like a deer in headlights when I ask them to scale simple moves. You'd be shocked at hard this for some people (in least I am shocked.) You're right, using examples of when "The Code," is ridiculous isn't intelligent to do because it makes "The Code," look bad. We can go on with other examples? Ray Emery? Chris Simon? Trevor Gillies? Marty McSorley?

It's not "boiling down," "The Code," is the definition (ridiculous and murky as it may be,) of how fighting works in the NHL. Read Ross Bernstein's book about the many different ways fighting attempts to define itself within the realms of the game. "The Code," is exactly what this is about. And, "The Code," is garbage.

The funniest thing about all of this? Brooks Orpik has fought to "answer to his hits," before. Including "answering," to his arguably dirtiest hit when he injured Erik Cole. As Orpik has gotten older he has fought less because he doesn't and shouldn't have to. You know who else delivered huge body checks, fought a lot early in his career, but then did it less as he got older? Scott Stevens. This is all ridiculous though, as "getting punched in the face," hasn't been a deterrent to anything since the modern rules were put into place. But, hey, if you think the way fighting worked in the 70s with bench clearing brawls not having any extra consequence, go for it. Fighting is dying, just like stick fighting died before it. I just hope a player doesn't have to die fighting before it stops. Though, with the deaths of men like Wade Belak, Rick Rypien, and Derek Boogaard, perhaps people already have died because of fighting. Don Sanderson dying because his head smashed off the ice during a fight in the OHL is "just part of the game," too I guess.


The ridiculous logic of Sanderson's death is, instead of banning fighting, we'll just make sure players keep their helmets on when they bare knuckle box. It'd be hilarious if this rule didn't exist because someone DIED.

And, for the record, if you're going to give a snide, looking down your nose, remark about someone not understanding, at least use proper grammar while trying to act above someone.

It's there to keep both teams honest. A two minute penalty can be "well worth it" (Mighty Ducks, anyone?) for taking a cheap shot if you're completely protected from retaliation. I'd highly recommend The Code by Ross Bernstein for some interesting reading.

As far as getting out of hand, all-out brawling has been reined in a bit since the famous fights of the 1970s. You can't be a third man into a fight, and if two players are already fighting, anyone who gets into a subsequent fight is automatically ejected from the game.

You should read Climbing Anchors by Luebben. It goes over sport and TR anchors very well.

As far as a PAS goes, sure you can use 2 PAS's but I will tell you that the PAS isn't what you need to be worried about when it comes to redundancy, it's the anchor. As long as you're not using your PAS beyond it being a rap tether and are continuing to monitor its wear, just as you would with a harness it has the exact same strength rating as your belay loop which you trust without backup when you rappel.

I'm still a little concerned about your rope as it looks short for most crags.

Lastly I'm not sure where you'll be climbing but if you're going to be setup TRs on bolted routes just make sure you have a safe way of accessing the anchors from above. A lot of times the bolts are over the edge of a route and the last thing you want to do is factor-two on your PAS.

Rig up a ground anchor for her.

This can entail placing a piece of traditional protection at the base of a climb (not always an option) near where she will be standing, and then running the rope through said piece of protection or attaching it to her harness via use of say, a cordelette and a locking carabiner. Good options for attachment to the harness include the belay loop or the haul loop (providing her harness has one, and it's a rated haul loop, which it should be--look at the back of the harness), and which one makes more sense depends on what is going to happen when you fall as far as forces, etc. go and the terrain. Of course, this requires you to have traditional gear and be relatively proficient at placing it, such that you can be sure the gear will resist a pull in the necessary direction(s).

Another option is to rig up an anchor to a sufficiently sized tree, a rock, or some other object that is not going to move if loaded with the force of a fall. I am assuming you have some experience building top rope anchors from trees and similar, and can probably figure out a way to rig this up. If you don't, a book like this one or this one or both wouldn't be a bad investment. Another good investment is a longer than usual cordelette, say 30-40 ft (of 7 mm accessory cord), instead of the more typical ~20-25 ft. In these cases, you'll probably end up attaching what you're using as an anchor to the haul loop on the back of her harness. Make sure that there isn't a ton of slack (but still enough slack) from where she's initially going to stand.

A final option is to use a heavy pack to help anchor her. Same idea as the other two options, the anchor is just not quite as solid, and odds are won't help too much given your weight differences unless that pack is SERIOUSLY heavy.

If you're in a gym, they should have either floor anchors or belay melons (with specified weights) that can be used.

As for things to watch out for, keep in mind that you're going to have to be extra cautious of falling on the first few bolts, and also that you have to be extra cautious of falling when there is a ledge below you. Pretty much any decent fall you take is going to result in her being sucked up to the first clip, and that means you're going to fall much farther than you would if someone of a similar weight was belaying you.

Grab this book Rock Climbing Anchors: A Comprehensive Guide, its a great resource for learning how to build anchors.


Rope drag is generally a bad thing, even smooth surfaces will cause your rope to pick up grit and accelerate wear on your gear. Everyone should know how to properly set up an anchor, its easy once you know some things to avoid and get an idea of what you're looking to accomplish. It gets really interesting in the alpine when you're having to improvise points of protection and your general station set up! Like /u/cardina16 said, make sure you are ERNEST.

Much (belated) thanks for this informative response. It sounds like my best bet is to go with a whole new setup for touring, with lighter skis, touring bindings and new boots. I'm only dimly aware of the specialized Dynafit/tech setups... is this something I should be looking into now, since I'm getting a dedicated setup for touring anyway (and keeping my existing ones for resort skiing)? Or is there a good reason to stay away from these until I'm more experienced out back?

Is there any particular model or type of ski you would recommend, or even just a suggested waist width? Do I want a really wide powder ski, something more rounded in the 98mm area, or something else entirely? (Unrelated to touring per se, I had been considering getting something like a Katana or even Shiro for a while. Should I consider something like that for touring specifically?)

If you know any shops in the US you'd particularly recommend for touring skis and boots, please let me know! I'm keenly aware of the importance of a bootfitter in general, but not so sure where to find one that specializes in touring.

Also appreciate the safety tip. While I have yet to take even the basic avalanche course (looking to take the level 1 first thing next season and go from there), I've been reading enough to get some idea of just how much I have to learn about this (e.g., this). Given that, I intend to go out only with pro guides for the time being.

There's a whole chapter about it in The Book.

They looked at 300 different batter/pitcher matchups and found that there was no correlation whatsoever between past and future performance. The sample size is just much too small. Here's the takeaway:

For those interested, The Book that dbeeaitch referenced is top notch. Even if you're not great at math, the authors do a pretty good job of explaining the "take-home" value of the statistics, e.g. if you've got a good OPS but tend to hit in a lot of double plays, you should bat first.

First, look on YouTube for basic info. You can find videos about positions and plays and even schemes like the spread pretty easily.

Second, I recommend looking up some film breakdowns. Bill Belichick does them weekly (I think it's weekly) on a local Boston channel, but you can find some of them on YouTube by searching for Belichick Breakdown.

Third, try to find some guides for how to watch football and how to breakdown a game. Articles like this can provide you with a greater understanding of what everyone is doing during a play.

Fourth, do some reading.

I highly recommend Take Your Eye Off the Ball: How to Watch Football by Knowing Where to Look to help you while watching the game, but be sure to get the paperback version so you get all the diagrams. It will teach you the progression of the reads, the route running, the blocking and everything that happens on defense as well.

To help you cut through some of the jargon announcers use, I recomment Blood, Sweat and Chalk: The Ultimate Football Playbook.

If you want to learn more about strategies, try The Essential Smart Football.

To learn more about evaluating players, Football Scouting Methods is a must read. It will take you to the football of another era, but with the foundation from all the other info I've provided you will be able to start putting the pyramid together and learn how the game became what it was today.

  • "The System: The Glory and Scandal of Big-Time College Football." Best book on big time college football I've ever read. Goes inside/behind the lines, and gives you different angles and perspectives on scandals. There's four chapters dedicated to the story of Mike Leach ranging from TTU to WSU. One about how Nick Saban got to Bama, and others about sexual assault, paper classes, improper benefits, and all the other politics and behind the scenes damage control stuff we never see. It's also euphoric, because it gives the inside story of players' or coaches' experiences in big moments we all know of.

  • "Missoula, Rape and the Justice System in a College Town." The scope is college football at the University of Montana. This can be a difficult read, especially if you or anyone you care about has had an experience with rape or sexual assault (graphic and chilling), but it is really good, and is a harsh reality check that most don't really get from sports-prioritized media on the topic (Victim perspective and stories).

  • On the more X's and O's side, there is "Blood, Sweat, and Chalk." Ignore the wildcat chapter though. The history of that chapter is extremely weak and inaccurate.

No he didn't invent the triple option. That's as old as football itself. The Zone-Read, running the option off the defensive end out of a shot gun formation, was "invented" by RichRod.

When he was a coach in something like D3, there was a blown play where his QB missed the hand off. Typically, the QB is instructed to follow the RB on that sort of thing, but instead took off the other way. Rich Rod asked why he went off the other end and the guy said something like, "the end followed the HB, so I went the other way". A light went off in RichRod's head and he used it to stampede through the coaching ranks.

I bought an old 12 speed racing Peugeot 3 months ago and I am delighted with it.

Since I live on a steep hill and had not done any kind of exercise in years, I asked a LBS for a solution and they put a mountain freewheel on it. I changed the tires (got bigger tires, good quality) and brake pads, cables and housing myself (some googling and checking my new knowledge at the LBS did the trick).

In other words, I went for the second hand, vintage (but a good make) bike because I was not sure I would stick to biking. With the tires I have, my road bike can handle gravel but certainly not trails with rocks and the likes.

Maybe the friend you borrowed the bike from could help you with a second-hand purchase.

If money is not an issue, put the money into a decent cyclocross bike but go to a reliable shop and discuss your options with them.

Oh... and I bought this book, it has got everything on bike maintenance (it is no rocket science... what is hard is to figure out components compatibility when you want to upgrade an old bike. If you are just maintaining your bike, it is pretty basic).

Unless you live in a very hilly area, basic biking is not that hard: the bike carries your weight. Essentially, you have to keep in mind that you should strive to pedal at a regular cadence and use your gears astutely. Increasing the length of your rides is probably what you are aiming for, if you enjoy the touristy aspect of riding. If you are more into fitness/cardio, well... I don't know (pedal faster, probably).

The only problem I encountered is finding a good saddle (it seems my last purchase might do) and finding raingear that does not make you feel like you are sitting in a hot bath.

OP, if you have not yet, please read Training and Racing with a Power Meter. If you have not read it I recommend just reading it through once, even if you start saying "what the hell is this part getting at?" Then once you are done reread it. It makes a ton of sense the second time through when you can see what he is laying ground work for later in the book.

I read the NJPW book the Lion's Pride and found out that one of Inoki's protégés had tried to start that a while ago and that is when the NEVER Title was created. However, the spinoff brand only ran a few shows and died off.

"They say" you should only increase your distance by 10% per week. That puts you at about 17 weeks to go from 15 to 60 miles. That doesn't include rest weeks every 4th or 5th week, which is smart. So add another 3 or 4 rest weeks in there that you're not upping your mileage. Let's say 21 weeks, total. Which is within the 30-31 weeks you have alloted. It doesn't account for injury.

Not true. If there truly was a "code" then you wouldn't have the McSorley incident or the Bertuzzi incident where players who declined to fight were still hunted down and assaulted. There is little to no fighting in other sports. There is little to no fighting in the playoffs because the consequences are so high. Since the NHL has tightened up the rules and made stiffer penalties, there are fewer fights. The only reason you had fighting was because the fans liked it. That is changing, thankfully.
