My wife and I last month or so just started watching Parks and Rec on Netflix. Being a watch enthusiast I was always curious which watch Ron Swanson wore on the show so I looked it up as I think it is sharp looking. Turns out, as many already know, it is a discontinued Citizen 2100 Calibre

I was not in a hurry to get it but thought if I ever came across one I'd perhaps pick one up. Friday one popped up on Facebook Marketplace, which I have never used and not sure why I even looked, and I decided to grab it for what I thought was a good price after seeing what they go for on e-bay (it is getting harder to find this version). When I told my wife I was running to meet the guy after work she rolled her eyes and asked why I needed yet another watch. I told her it was a good deal and that I was going to flip it (that excuse is getting thin though as I have yet do so with a watch). However after seeing it she is now suggesting I keep it because she really likes the dial. Even though it looks white it actually has a horizontal striped pattern, almost sunburst like, that only shows up in certain light.

The watch definitely showed signs of steady wear after 2 years, but cleaned up rather nice. The mineral crystal needs some attention as there are a fair number of micro scratches that should buff right out. I'm still on the fence about keeping it, but for now will give it a week or two and see if I still feel its worth hanging on to. Eco drive, flyback chrono and an alarm feature make it a pretty solid piece for well under $200.

Some prices seem a little high, albeit most of them are out of stock everywhere and I imagine they won't be in stock any time soon. Except for the G-Shock, you can pick one up on amazon for a bit less than $70

I wanted to get into watch collecting but I realized its an expensive hobby and I'm a young guy in college. I didn't know where to start, but started reading about Japanese watches and then the Orient Blue Mako really caught my eye. I love the divers watch style. I bought a Nato strap because everyone loves them here and I plan on finding a metal bracelet to pair this with when I can afford one. I know this isn't really a glamorous piece, but I thought I could make my post interesting with a timelapse gif! If anyone has any recommendations on a metal bracelet for this by the way, let me know!

I bought the watch here with a rubber strap.

Here's the higher quality source video!, not sure if video posts are allowed here so I converted it to a gfycat for this post.

Going with this subreddit's hivemind (which in this case is quite correct) I would suggest Seiko. Maybe something like a Seiko 5 or a Black Monster?

Also my personal dream watch (I dream small), unfortunately unavailable here in the UK, Maratac Pilot.

u/BitcoinBoo · 6 pointsr/EDC

Look here's a real plastic case with a saphire crystal for over 500. OMG

You can check the r/watches official buying guide for sub $250 watches. Here

For something quite similar you might check out this Seiko SNAE65 or the SNN079P2

I bought an SRP775, and i absolutely love it.
I was hell bent on getting a SKX007 but i started looking at pictures of the SRP775 and stalked Amazon for sales, picked one up for $260.00, the watch is fantastic

Maybe they use two different movements in different watches? I'm just going off what I've seen online for their Pro Divers.

If you want any watch with both a compass and temperature readings, it sounds like you'd be better off with a Casio Pro-Trek. They have more sensors than G-shocks, and are normally cheaper.

Here's one that costs only 50$ and has a compass, altimeter, thermometer, and barometer. That being said, it's not solar powered, and it has a negative display, which some people dislike (negative displays are slightly harder to read than positive ones).

If you want to go cheaper or really want a positive display, here's a 40$ one, but it does not have a compass or tough solar.

If you have your heart set on a g-shock. The only one with a compass and thermometer is this one, which, at 180$, does break the bank.

If you don't really care about a compass or thermometer that much and really want a g-shock, I can personally vouch for this at 40$, it's a steal. Other commonly recommended G-shocks are this one because it's less bulky and this one because not only is it less bulky, but it's one of the cheapest G-shocks with multiband-6 (for automatically syncing itself to the correct time) and tough solar.

My overall recommendation to you would be the 50$ Pro-Trek, as I think it fits your needs the best for cheap. However if you are against negative displays, it might not be for you.

Edit: Also the watch you chose is pretty cool. I just saw it was only 62$ on Amazon, that's a great option as well.

u/exxplicit · 4 pointsr/Watches

To be honest, I think it looks fine on your wrist. As far as sub $100 automatics, Amazon.com search will help:) (40mm+, <$100, men's, automatic self-wind).

Been looking at watches myself the last week, read somewhere that Invicta and Fossil is not so good quality - I do however see a lot of people with Orient watches (example).

u/patsfan038 · 4 pointsr/Watches

New poster! I've always been into watches but never owned anything too expensive. My daily driver was THIS, on the days I wear business casual to work. When I need to be a little dressed up, I'd wear THIS. Hamilton is awesome. You can tell how well its made. I popped a nato strap to this bad boy and good to go! Hopefully the first of many!

u/Aevum1 · 3 pointsr/Watches

There are 3 "stargates"

u/piezeppelin · 3 pointsr/Watches

I'd recommend something like this Hamilton Jazzmaster or the Tissot PRC200. Careful with the latter, as they are often faked.

Given that, I would also tell your friend that his lawyer buddies will probably not be impressed with these watches, as their budgets will be considerably higher.

u/[deleted] · 3 pointsr/Watches

Very nice. Here's the link for those interested.

u/acog · 3 pointsr/Watches

You can get a very clean Christopher Ward watch with a Swiss movement for under $500. I just purchased this Christopher Ward "flieger" (German flight watch) style piece, and I love it.

I'm finding that at the $400-$500 range you have a huge variety of decent quality timepieces to choose from. I can afford more expensive watches, but I'm still uncomfortable with the idea of anything more than $1K on my wrist.

By the way, by no means do you even have to spend that much for a great watch. The Orient Blue Mako and the Seiko Monster are popular and well regarded, and they're both inexpensive.

u/KarlyPilkoids · 3 pointsr/Watches

I would not recommend either of those brands. They are solely fashion pieces, and therefore lack in build quality. I would suggest a Citizen, such as this one, or this one,

u/scouser916 · 3 pointsr/Watches

I'd recommend the Tissot PRC 200 or V8 for a chrono in that price range

V8 On Leather

PRC 200 on Leather

PRC 200 on Steel

Other brands I'm that I'm sure will get mentioned: Orient (Japan), Seiko (Seiko), Hamilton (Swiss), Christopher Ward (Swiss). For under $300, you're looking at a quartz movement, which is fine.

If you just want a cheap, good quality sport chrono, I'd probably get a Seiko while you save for something nicer (if you want to)

Hey Reddit! I'm here today looking to trade my great condition seiko SNN079P2 it has a Quartz movement. I got it from a fellow redditor on here a few months ago in a trade and it is sadly not getting the wrist wear it deserves. It is a great watch but I am just looking for something a little different.
I am including a lot of extra straps today. On it already is a black Hadley Roma in pretty nice shape 7/10, a longer brown with white stitching Hadley Roma 10/10 I don't even think I ever wore it after trying it on the first time and finding out it doesn't fit my baby wrists. Original strap will be included along with 2 NATOs.

I am looking to trade for something unique. I love vintage, but if it is interesting I will always consider newer. I absolutely adore anything funky looking (70s style!) I would prefer automatic or mechanical but I will consider electric and Quartz. I am really open to anything. Honestly I will consider anything sub 42mm that runs

If you have anything you think I may be interested in please send me a PM, no need to include details, just a quick pic will do to see if I would be interested (I don't want to waste anybody's time here).

You didn't mention your budget, but if you're looking to spend $50 like on your 180 watch, you'd be hard pressed to find anything non-digital, I would think.

This Citizen Eco-Drive Chronograph may fit your need. It has a quartz-based analog movement, is silent and the chrono function works very well with a smooth sweeping hand. (And if you're curious, yes, it does reset very well). On top of that, it's a pretty nice looking-watch you can wear daily and it's solar charged.

u/johnwclark · 3 pointsr/Watches

~$100. I've found some Citizen and Seiko watches online like this, this, and this one. I'm looking for something that's not too busy that could also be worn in a more formal setting.

u/rayraywatches · 2 pointsr/Watches

Entitled to your opinion of course but I'd like to know, why? How do you think that an automatic mechanical watch that is both hack and hand wind not worth it? Not to mention the solid link stainless steel oyster style bracelet? (I swapped the bracelet for a Olive Zulu with PVD hardware) Granted I've had it for a couple weeks so it hasn't "proven" itself but everything feels solid. The 1mm play in the bezel is the biggest gripe but for less than $40, I'm pleased. Can't we all hate on Invicta together? JK all you Pro Diver owners lurking out there

Casio G-Shock GWG-1000 Mudmaster

Price: $750 USD (~$530 on Amazon Prime)

Movement: Tough Solar Quartz

Style: Sport/Military/Outdoors

Size: 59.5 x 56.1 x 18 mm ( huuuuuge )

Links: Casio Asia Amazon GShock.com

Pros:

  • Great build quality and long lasting tough features (Mud resistant gasket construction, Anti-Shock technology, sapphire crystal).

  • Multi Band receiver for Atomic synchronization.

  • Great feature set (Alarms, Timers, Stopwatches, etc.).

    Cons:

  • Snooze alarm is not included even though it's advertised.

  • Smart Crown's mud resist makes it a pain to use.

  • Features are missing when compared to other G-Shock lines that technically could have been included.

Description: I purchased this watch as a beater and so far, have been super impressed. I threw it in this category because I think it's on the top of the line of daily drivers with lots of features that not only are useful in your day to day, but that improve the lifespan of the watch.

First and foremost, the major upgrades from the GG-1000 include a sapphire face which should have no problem keeping scratch free for years with its inlaid bezel under the case top. Along with that, a 6 band Atomic Timekeeping Receiver can automatically sync with atomic stations in the US, Japan, China, and Europe is another added feature that is an upgrade from the GG-1000. Lastly, a Tough Solar power unit keeps you running for years, so you won't have to worry about battery replacement.

Some extra day to day features include, 5 Alarms, a stopwatch, a timer, world clock, vibration resistance, waterproof 200m, and dirt/mud resistance with gaskets on the crown and button cylinders. How resistant is it? Time will tell, but it should be fine for day to day use. Included as well is a barometer, altimeter, thermometer, and compass which honestly I don't use much. I do get chances to use the compass and altimeter when camping, and was surprised by how accurate it was, but the only sensor is a barometer to measure altitude, so depending on reference values and weather conditions, might vary in accuracy.

There are some quirks. I am not sure why a sunset/sunrise mode is not included in the model, since it definitely is included in lesser models. Also, I still haven't figured out how to snooze an alarm, and it appears the module 5463 does not include the snooze feature. I do think the most annoying quirk is that it's really difficult to use the crown while it's still on your wrist, since it requires a few turns to unlock it. All in all I think this is on the high end of the daily drivers that's pretty stylish for day to day use, with some extra features to boot that you won't get in a mechanical watch.

I'm not a fan of quartzs and/or chronos, so I'd say that if these are your only 2 options, then go for the Orient - although I think the double crowns look a bit odd.

Although this one's not a 'nice' watch, it's an automatic, it can take a beating, looks cool, has incredible lume, screw-down crown, uni-directional bezel, and is a must-have for any new watch collector on a tight budget:

Seiko Black Monster

Seiko Orange Monster

Lastly, don't overlook Raymond Weil for a nice watch in the $500 price range - Amazon is full of them.

[Orient Ray Blue EM6500CD]

Price: About 200$

Movement: Automatic

Style: Diver

Size: 42mm
Link: amazon

Description: This is, probably, the best watch selling for under 250$. The blue sunburst dial is captivating, the bezel is sturdy and has a deep blue colour that really stands out. The dial features dots for hour markers and the lume on this thing is just outstanding, certainly at this price point.

I've replaced the rubber bracelet on mine for several nato's along the way but recently I fitted a brown Hirsch + butterfly deployant clasp combo that I had lying around. The whole combo works really well and makes this unassuming Orient even better IMHO.

I bought mine on Amazon for 115 GBP but now it seems to be selling for more than double that. I'm certain it can still be found for under 200$ though.

That Timex Expedition is really good looking.

I'm sorry this will be outside of your budget, but my first choice would be an Eco Drive.

More seriously, if I were looking for a gshock I'd probably be leaning towards this one. Solar, atomic, chrono, WR 200. A touch over your budget, but not much.

A cheaper alternative, not solar, not atomic, and not as good looking, but still WR 200 would be a DW6900.

Luminox makes gorgeous watches but have a shitty customer service. Mine fogs up in cold weather sometimes, and while it does not seem to affect timekeeping, I never got a reply when I tried getting in touch with Luminox.

The band on mine just broke and until I get a replacement, I am wearing a Casio Riseman. Great watch too.

u/C0smo__Kramer · 1 pointr/Watches

Unfortunately, the bracelet is where a lot of the low end watches skimp at. There are some good options though.

If you want an automatic, I would go with an Orient Mako (although the endlinks and pins are a little cheap) or a Seiko Monster.

If you want quartz, I would look at the Casio Edifice line or maybe a Bulova Precisionist. Tissot Classic Dream if you want something a little fancier.

This is just a starting point, read the sidebar and search around until you find something that suits you. Also, if possible try on as many watches in person to really get a feel for what you like.

Could someone advise me on which of these two watches would be better:

Seiko 5 SNZF17
http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B001IBF15Y?psc=1&redirect=true&ref_=ox_sc_act_title_1&smid=A1M5EIC3PTHQ2U

Or

Orient Ray Blue
http://www.amazon.co.uk/Orient-21-Jewel-Automatic-Rubber-EM6500CD/dp/B008G39NFG/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1450387700&sr=8-1&keywords=Orient+%22Blue%22+Ray

I plan to change the strap so that doesn't make a difference, I'm also not planning to actually go diving with either of them so it's more about the looks. I however don't know anything about watch quality or watch movements and the online reviews weren't really conclusive.

To me the choice here is obvious:

Black Monster @ $200

or even cheaper, but less WR...

Baby Black Monster @ $110

Monster side-by-side with SMP

Monster and Baby Monster

Same here. I would love a really nice watch someday though. I'm fine with mid tier watches though. Right now I'm waffling between a Seiko Turtle or a Maranez.

I just got a G-shock awg100. So far I love it. It's relatively small for a G-shock. The atomic feature is pretty neat. The analog/digital thing was a little weird at first, but I got used to it quickly.

Album with other bands

I absolutely love my Blue Mako. It was a gift from my girlfriend in December and I picked the version with the rubber strap because I knew I would change it any way. Until about a week ago I wore it with the blue NATO, but I recently purchased the leather NATO and fell in love again.

I haven't officially tested the time, but unofficially it has been great. "The School of Horology" reviewed the movement and it performed very well. (Incredibly well for a $100.00 US watch.) Video

The watch was purchased on Amazon.com and is available now for just under $100.00 US. Amazon Link

I honestly don't have any cons for this watch. It quickly became my daily watch due to its durability and versatile style, due to the strap changes. I've banged this thing into all sorts of stuff and it's held up like a champ. The value is incredible and for $20.00 strap you can give it a total face lift.

The code is no good anymore but here is one for $119 Orient Ray Blue Dial 21-Jewel Automatic Dive Watch on Rubber Strap EM6500CD https://www.amazon.com/dp/B008G39NFG/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_awd_dEBGwbHBC9NR5

I would get the GW-B5600-BC it's the best square G-Shock under $200 with bluetooth and the combi bracelet.

u/TemtNosce · 1 pointr/AskReddit

My work watch. I got it as a gift back in 2000, I'm surprised they still sell it.

Also I'll wear this every now and again, but the weight gets to me after awhile.

Also, when I was in 7th grade my dad bought me this watch(first one on left) as a gift. Shows the early planting of geeky seeds because why would a 7th grader need this watch? I didn't, but I thought it was the coolest watch ever created, evar.

I love the Citizen Ecodrive Calibre 2100.

If you want a mechanical watch, I would recommend the Orient Union, Millenium, or Vintage (in order of price). The Millenium (that's how they spell it) has a metal band but you could easily afford a leather one as well within your budget once you factor in the 50% off coupon code floating around.

If you'd prefer one closer to that Kenneth Cole you'll have to go quartz, but the Tissot PRC200 would be your best selection. Here is the amazon link: http://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B000B7MBHM/ref=aw_d_iv_watches?is=l&qid=1323692800&sr=8-3

Sorry I didn't provide more links, on my way to work so I'm on my phone on the train.

I was able to go some research now that I am home. Seems it is model BV1060-07E found possibly here and here for possible specs and information!

u/anagrammatron · 1 pointr/Watches

I wanted to have something with white dial to wear daily, I'd grown tired of black dials so I bought Citizen BV1080-18A for its superior contrast and legibility. It's been one of my best purchases in recent times and I'm really happy with it. I had to remove stock strap because it was too long for me, replaced with a bracelet and it's like a whole different watch now. Super comfortable, super legible.

G-Shock GA110-1B up for sale. $60 + the cost of shipping (whatever service, however, wherever).

Analog and digital display. Quartz movement. Accurate. Just looking to get something new and different.

Thank you for looking. Feel free to ask questions.

No, I can't. Timex is well known for dominating the extreme low end of the market in terms of quality/price. All I'm saying is that I think it looks bad and for a casual watch I'd suggest something else, even a different Timex. You might have to be willing to spend 100 dollars on a watch, which for reference, is a very low amount for a watch. You can have your cheap digital watch for sports and a nicer one for day wearing. Personally, I love the look of plain chronographs, so for a casual watch I'd recommend something like:

http://www.amazon.com/Tissot-T17151632-T-Sport-PRC200-Watch/dp/B000B7MBHM/ref=sr_1_4?s=watches&ie=UTF8&qid=1345131884&sr=1-4&keywords=tissot+chronograph

or

http://www.amazon.com/Timex-T2N701DH-Intelligent-Quartz-Series/dp/B0053EXKVE/ref=wl_it_dp_o_pdT11_S?ie=UTF8&coliid=IZ3S0WFW7TA3Q&colid=1GOTTUYR2DTX4

The least you could do is upgrade to a Seiko 5, which will cost you 50 dollars more and look much better. Or even a Timex Expedition! Just 10 dollars more and it looks so much better than a Weekender.

I know. I'm lukewarm on dive watches, but I really like the deep, saphire blue of the Ray. They have it on Amazon, but with a rubber strap.

u/grandoiseau · -1 pointsr/malefashionadvice

it could be unisex, but it's definitely not a big man's dive watch
