I wanted to get into watch collecting but I realized its an expensive hobby and I'm a young guy in college. I didn't know where to start, but started reading about Japanese watches and then the Orient Blue Mako really caught my eye. I love the divers watch style. I bought a Nato strap because everyone loves them here and I plan on finding a metal bracelet to pair this with when I can afford one. I know this isn't really a glamorous piece, but I thought I could make my post interesting with a timelapse gif! If anyone has any recommendations on a metal bracelet for this by the way, let me know!

The reviews on this amazon listing for toe socks seem to indicate that the main goal of toe socks is to prevent blistering from walking a lot among people who find their toes rubbing against each other to be a serious problem.

Probably you don't have this problem, and so they seem silly to you, but can you understand why these people rate them highly? It seems to have nothing to do with fashion or anything silly, but a purely pragmatic problem.

Going with this subreddit's hivemind (which in this case is quite correct) I would suggest Seiko. Maybe something like a Seiko 5 or a Black Monster?

I bought an SRP775, and i absolutely love it.
I was hell bent on getting a SKX007 but i started looking at pictures of the SRP775 and stalked Amazon for sales, picked one up for $260.00, the watch is fantastic

As my graduation present I got myself the Seiko SNE107. The watch (as most Seikos are) is of superb quality. however, I've never seen this watch specifically get any love. The watch has a case diameter of 42 mm. The bezel is very nice, not too loose and not too tight. The watch is pretty heavy, but that is to be expected when buying a diving watch. Screw down crown works well, no wobble. Hardex crystal is good. Only complaint is the pin and collar bracelet. Also, the bracelet is a little small for the watch IMO. That can be easily fixed with a NATO/Rubber strap. The hands are are nice and its very easy to read. The lume is great, nothing to complain about at all. The day date function is nice, Saturday and Sunday are different colors than the weekdays for those that like that. The watch is solar powered, but that should be no turn off, leave the watch in the sun for a couple hours when first receiving the watch and you'll be good. Overall it is a fantastic watch for its price, I do recommend it.

No one has mentioned snow! Here are the basics of what you'll need.

• Boots. Something similar to LL Bean Boots would be ideal. It will snow and slush and you want your boots to be warm and waterproof. People will wear normal shoes during winter, but they'll also have cold and wet feet.
  
• Gloves. Try to avoid really thin materials. Fleece should be good enough until you realize what you're comfortable with. Old Navy sells cheap fleece ones to get you started.
  
• Jacket. You want something with multiple layers with a waterproof exterior. Bonus: has a hood and the ability to tighten around the waist with little bungee knobs (wind up your jacket sucks). North Face is a very popular brand, but can be expensive (>$250). North Face and Columbia also sell jackets that have a removable inner fleece jacket, so you can wear it across multiple seasons.
  
  Other goodies:
  
  
• Hat - anything goes, from beanies to those big furry ones
  
• Scarf / one of these thingies - fantastic for covering your chin and nose on a super windy day
  
• 180s
  
• Wool socks
  
• Long underwear / Under Armour style tight-fitted shirts and pants

I have like 15 pairs of these. They're very expensive, but you can usually get a pro deal and it brings them down to about 15/pr.

I've used smart wool, and I very much prefer these. Plus they're made in America and carry a lifetime warranty, so if you ever wear them out you can send them in for a new pair.

Maybe they use two different movements in different watches? I'm just going off what I've seen online for their Pro Divers.

If you want any watch with both a compass and temperature readings, it sounds like you'd be better off with a Casio Pro-Trek. They have more sensors than G-shocks, and are normally cheaper.

Here's one that costs only 50$ and has a compass, altimeter, thermometer, and barometer. That being said, it's not solar powered, and it has a negative display, which some people dislike (negative displays are slightly harder to read than positive ones).

If you want to go cheaper or really want a positive display, here's a 40$ one, but it does not have a compass or tough solar.

If you have your heart set on a g-shock. The only one with a compass and thermometer is this one, which, at 180$, does break the bank.

If you don't really care about a compass or thermometer that much and really want a g-shock, I can personally vouch for this at 40$, it's a steal. Other commonly recommended G-shocks are this one because it's less bulky and this one because not only is it less bulky, but it's one of the cheapest G-shocks with multiband-6 (for automatically syncing itself to the correct time) and tough solar.



My overall recommendation to you would be the 50$ Pro-Trek, as I think it fits your needs the best for cheap. However if you are against negative displays, it might not be for you.

Edit: Also the watch you chose is pretty cool. I just saw it was only 62$ on Amazon, that's a great option as well.

To be honest, I think it looks fine on your wrist. As far as sub $100 automatics, Amazon.com search will help:) (40mm+, <$100, men's, automatic self-wind).

Been looking at watches myself the last week, read somewhere that Invicta and Fossil is not so good quality - I do however see a lot of people with Orient watches (example).

I'd recommend something like this Hamilton Jazzmaster or the Tissot PRC200. Careful with the latter, as they are often faked.

Given that, I would also tell your friend that his lawyer buddies will probably not be impressed with these watches, as their budgets will be considerably higher.

You can get a very clean Christopher Ward watch with a Swiss movement for under $500. I just purchased this Christopher Ward "flieger" (German flight watch) style piece, and I love it.

I'm finding that at the $400-$500 range you have a huge variety of decent quality timepieces to choose from. I can afford more expensive watches, but I'm still uncomfortable with the idea of anything more than $1K on my wrist.

By the way, by no means do you even have to spend that much for a great watch. The Orient Blue Mako and the Seiko Monster are popular and well regarded, and they're both inexpensive.

I would not recommend either of those brands. They are solely fashion pieces, and therefore lack in build quality. I would suggest a Citizen, such as this one, or this one,

My current daily watch is an omega dynamic that I'm very happy with.

It's expensive, but seiko makes some similar watches in your price range.

Or, another low budget favourite of mine is the orient ray. It's a decent quality, nicely designed diver.

I'd recommend the Tissot PRC 200 or V8 for a chrono in that price range

Other brands I'm that I'm sure will get mentioned: Orient (Japan), Seiko (Seiko), Hamilton (Swiss), Christopher Ward (Swiss). For under $300, you're looking at a quartz movement, which is fine.

If you just want a cheap, good quality sport chrono, I'd probably get a Seiko while you save for something nicer (if you want to)

Orient Black Ray.

I swear by leather chaps. I wear em even if it's 100F outside. The hot sun directly on the tops of my legs sucks, but the chaps provide an air-gap insulation layer.

I ride in that temp comfortably with not much problem, provided it's not a really long ride (without heated gear). I had expected to read that you'd bundled way up against the cold and still decided that was enough. Did you really just add chaps to your regular riding gear?

Here's what i wear other than normal "Clothes, jacket, gloves, and chaps"-

Good spandex thermals like Harley's "Ice Breakers" top and bottom. They're not the knit ones like the white long-johns, they're the kind you get at sporting goods stores for snow-boarders and skiers. Super thin, super comfy, and super warm.

Zipper hoodie- There's different weight hoodies. When I ride in cold temps, I grab my $100 super-heavy weight, thumb holes in the cuffs, "too heavy to wear indoors like ever" hoodie.

Glove liners made of silk or spandex- same stuff the thermals are made of. Makes all the difference until you're on the bike for more than 45 minutes. Knit watch cap- pulled down over my ears.

Once the sleeve is down over my face and the watch cap is down over my ears, I strap on the helmet. You can fold the sleeve down to expose your face if you get too warm while waiting at lights and to pull the bike out of the garage while the wife does whatever (happens a LOT when I dress like this, which means it's warm enough to ride :). If my face gets cold through the sleeve even, I tie a bandana over my face, old-west bandit style "This is a stick-up. Hand over the loot".

Glasses or goggles that cover the slit made between beanie and face sleeve. Glasses should be one-piece plastic frames that allow no air to pass between the lenses and the bridge of the nose. Wire frame glasses allow the eyes to dry out.

Last Christmas I rode from Berkeley, CA to Rocklin, CA, 125 miles away in 40F weather going up in the late morning and 30F weather going back home late-nite. It wasn't until the last 20 minutes of the ride home that my hands and crotch got unpleasantly cold, but not so cold that it was painful.

Hey Reddit! I'm here today looking to trade my great condition seiko SNN079P2 it has a Quartz movement. • This keychain flashlight is one of the things I'll be getting for Christmas this year to replace my old junker. I put a bit of research time into this with the help of /r/flashlights and youtube video reviews. I think it's a solid pick.

Given the recent apple keynote address where they announced that their new watch will have full cellular capabilities among the other things it can do I am half considering replacing this with a $400 wrist computer at some point, but that's a hefty investment.

• Come winter I always have my Balaclava (seriously, this one is awesome) for really cold weather and even a half piece for when it's cold enough for a scarf but I don't really need full head gear. I love both of these and refer to them as my full ninja vs my half ninja. My fiancee rolls her eyes.

Entitled to your opinion of course but I'd like to know, why? How do you think that an automatic mechanical watch that is both hack and hand wind not worth it? Not to mention the solid link stainless steel oyster style bracelet? (I swapped the bracelet for a Olive Zulu with PVD hardware) Granted I've had it for a couple weeks so it hasn't "proven" itself but everything feels solid. Lastly, a Tough Solar power unit keeps you running for years, so you won't have to worry about battery replacement.
  
  Some extra day to day features include, 5 Alarms, a stopwatch, a timer, world clock, vibration resistance, waterproof 200m, and dirt/mud resistance with gaskets on the crown and button cylinders. How resistant is it? Time will tell, but it should be fine for day to day use. Included as well is a barometer, altimeter, thermometer, and compass which honestly I don't use much. I do get chances to use the compass and altimeter when camping, and was surprised by how accurate it was, but the only sensor is a barometer to measure altitude, so depending on reference values and weather conditions, might vary in accuracy.
  
  There are some quirks. I am not sure why a sunset/sunrise mode is not included in the model, since it definitely is included in lesser models. Also, I still haven't figured out how to snooze an alarm, and it appears the module 5463 does not include the snooze feature. I do think the most annoying quirk is that it's really difficult to use the crown while it's still on your wrist, since it requires a few turns to unlock it. All in all I think this is on the high end of the daily drivers that's pretty stylish for day to day use, with some extra features to boot that you won't get in a mechanical watch.

You can pick up some really cool seiko chronographs for $100 through reputable dealers. I'd avoid this. I've never seen such a poorly finished case on a seiko.

I'm not a fan of quartzs and/or chronos, so I'd say that if these are your only 2 options, then go for the Orient - although I think the double crowns look a bit odd.

FroggToggs. Pants weigh about 5oz. Still ugly, but they come in different colors and they're cheap. Just a note, the fit is one size bigger than normal. I'm 5'10" and the small fits me. Medium was too long.

Description: This is, probably, the best watch selling for under 250$. The blue sunburst dial is captivating, the bezel is sturdy and has a deep blue colour that really stands out. The dial features dots for hour markers and the lume on this thing is just outstanding, certainly at this price point.

I've replaced the rubber bracelet on mine for several nato's along the way but recently I fitted a brown Hirsch + butterfly deployant clasp combo that I had lying around. The whole combo works really well and makes this unassuming Orient even better IMHO.

yea, like I said, it is really nice with a sweatshirt or fleece under it. I rode the Blue Ridge parkway for most of a day and the neck and hands were the only things that ever were cold. If you're looking for just a standard jacket, the Marmot Precip is fairly standard, and comes in a nice yellow. A lot of people seem to like the L.L. Bean Trail Model but I don't like the longer cut.

They're an OK brand, but $250 is way too much for a simple quartz like this. Just 200m diver is nothing special, OK it has a sapphire crystal, but so do most watches like this.

If you want a quartz diver then you can probably do far better. Heck, you can get something like this that is $150, and it's a great respected make too.

I don't really like to spend over 100 for a standard quartz watch. This Wenger isn't a chronograph, isn't a special ATM depth... I can't really see why it's so pricey. It's about $150 overpriced as far as I can see.

I own one of these bad boys, the Seiko SNE107 Sunburst Solar Diver. Not their most popular diver, but it's a great watch. The metal bracelet could be put together better, but I normally wear mine with a nylon or leather NATO.

At any brick and mortar store that sells five toed shoes, but only one company really makes them. The cheapest (and best IMO) sock costs 10 bucks a pair, but it's totally worth it to be able to wear socks in your vibrams.

Agreed. Certainly not BIFL, but not intended to be. They (pants + jacket) cost around $20 and pack up small so you won't get caught without. I often only bother with the jacket, but the pants are nice to have.

Unfortunately, the bracelet is where a lot of the low end watches skimp at. There are some good options though.

If you want an automatic, I would go with an Orient Mako (although the endlinks and pins are a little cheap) or a Seiko Monster.

If you want quartz, I would look at the Casio Edifice line or maybe a Bulova Precisionist. Tissot Classic Dream if you want something a little fancier.

This is just a starting point, read the sidebar and search around until you find something that suits you. Also, if possible try on as many watches in person to really get a feel for what you like.

High school budget... invest in nice boots/outerwear. Everything else can be found from Target or similar.

For example... if you really want a nice shawl cardigan, go ahead and get one with a 25% off coupon from J.Crew. Want some really nice boots? Don't be afraid to have them be your most expensive purchase in your wardrobe.

But for basics like tees and shirts, Target is just fine. Hell... I still rock a $5 "premium" Hanes tee when I know I'll be sweating outdoors. My most frequently worn socks are these Darn Tough Merino wool socks They may be $14 a pair, but I believe they carry a lifetime warranty. Extremely comfortable and I haven't even had one wear out on me yet! I recommend everyone try at least one pair to check them out and see if merino wool socks are for them.

OCBDs and most shirts... to be honest, I think name brands are a bit overrated for simple OCBDs and similar shirts. Sure they can be made of different material and vary in comfort... but they're all very similar and 99.9% of the people around you will never be able to tell the difference. I've never had a single person tell apart one of my $500 Ralph Lauren Purple Label shirt from my J.Crew ones. It's not like they're going to reach out and feel your shirt every time to check lol. The MAIN thing is fit!!! Fit is king! Try a bunch on and find one that fits you decently. I won't recommend tailoring all your OCBDs and shirts immediately as I find high schoolers can have huge variation in their bodies as they continue growing.

Putting together outfits... woah. Honestly... I'd just look up a bunch of popular instagrammers and the WAYWT threads on here and just keep on clicking. Maybe take some notes on what really really pulls you and draws in your imagination/taste.

I got my set for like $16. I returned my OR Helium 2 after getting completely soaked in it on a 10 mile hike in the rain. It sucks to get soaking wet while wearing a rain jacket that costs that much. The Frogg Toggs UL jacket has kept me BONE DRY

I absolutely love my Blue Mako. It was a gift from my girlfriend in December and I picked the version with the rubber strap because I knew I would change it any way. Until about a week ago I wore it with the blue NATO, but I recently purchased the leather NATO and fell in love again.

I haven't officially tested the time, but unofficially it has been great. "The School of Horology" reviewed the movement and it performed very well. (Incredibly well for a $100.00 US watch.) Video

Watch or jewelry shops in your area might have some. For budget-friendly options, try Hadley Roma on Amazon, usually $15-30. You just need a small screwdriver and a steady hand to push back the spring bar from the lug on the watch case. You'll typically need a width of 22mm, maybe 20 or 24; just measure the distance between the lugs or check the specs.

For a high quality watch for your dollar, especially your first (or first serious) watch, try a Citizen Eco-drive, Seiko, or Orient. Many of these don't require a battery change every couple years: the Eco-drives charge its battery from any light source, though this battery may have to be replaced after a decade. An Automatic winding watch, like the Seiko 5 line or the Orient Mako or Ray, use the movement of a counterweight (rotor) while you wear it to store energy in a spring. This energy will run out after about 1.5 days, so either wear it or shake it around every day.

A Timex Expedition served me well for a while, but I sure like my Citizens, Orient Ray, and Seiko 5 Military.

If you want a mechanical watch, I would recommend the Orient Union, Millenium, or Vintage (in order of price). The Millenium (that's how they spell it) has a metal band but you could easily afford a leather one as well within your budget once you factor in the 50% off coupon code floating around.

I wanted to have something with white dial to wear daily, I'd grown tired of black dials so I bought Citizen BV1080-18A for its superior contrast and legibility. It's been one of my best purchases in recent times and I'm really happy with it. I have a good amount of quality socks from when I was testing out different brands. CHUP, Anonymous Ism, People Socks, Wigwam, Smartwool, Kapital, Kirkland, Carhartt, Orvis and Darn Tough.

Darn Tough is easily my favorite, it really isn't even close. I don't think I will buy any other socks unless someone makes a really compelling argument to try out a different brand.

Just buy Darn Tough for everything. I have a thicker boot pair that is my favorite, a thinner type of the same length that is great for my closer fitting boots or sneakers and I have a pair that is about ankle height.

No, I can't. Timex is well known for dominating the extreme low end of the market in terms of quality/price. All I'm saying is that I think it looks bad and for a casual watch I'd suggest something else, even a different Timex. You might have to be willing to spend 100 dollars on a watch, which for reference, is a very low amount for a watch. You can have your cheap digital watch for sports and a nicer one for day wearing. Personally, I love the look of plain chronographs, so for a casual watch I'd recommend something like:
