I've seen some weekenders on this sub and really liked its clean look. I was surprised to see on the amazon that you could buy them in various different straps, at many different prices. I chose this one as an homage to my alma mater. The indiglo is a nice touch.
Next up to purchase for me are either: the Casio gold calculator watch, the Casio gold world time watch (though I like the classic illuminator one as well, not to mention I'm torn between gold vs. stainless steel), or the Seagull 1963 . Also debating between the Casio MVD106 and a Seiko diver (so many options...).
I wanted to get into watch collecting but I realized its an expensive hobby and I'm a young guy in college. I didn't know where to start, but started reading about Japanese watches and then the Orient Blue Mako really caught my eye. I love the divers watch style. I bought a Nato strap because everyone loves them here and I plan on finding a metal bracelet to pair this with when I can afford one. I know this isn't really a glamorous piece, but I thought I could make my post interesting with a timelapse gif! If anyone has any recommendations on a metal bracelet for this by the way, let me know!
I bought the watch here with a rubber strap.
Here's the higher quality source video!, not sure if video posts are allowed here so I converted it to a gfycat for this post.
The reviews on this amazon listing for toe socks seem to indicate that the main goal of toe socks is to prevent blistering from walking a lot among people who find their toes rubbing against each other to be a serious problem.
Probably you don't have this problem, and so they seem silly to you, but can you understand why these people rate them highly? It seems to have nothing to do with fashion or anything silly, but a purely pragmatic problem.
Going with this subreddit's hivemind (which in this case is quite correct) I would suggest Seiko. Maybe something like a Seiko 5 or a Black Monster?
Also my personal dream watch (I dream small), unfortunately unavailable here in the UK, Maratac Pilot.
Look here's a real plastic case with a saphire crystal for over 500. OMG
I'm pretty sure it was this one! https://www.amazon.com/dp/B000PGOOIS?psc=1 :)
Everyone on this subreddit recommends to steer clear of fashion watches, but I like to recommend that you get a watch that YOU WILL ENJOY AND LIKE. You will ultimately be the one who will be wearing it anyways, so why not get that Mickey Mouse watch you been eyeing?
But as a fan of horology, I'd recommend these watches that have similar designs to what you linked above.

Not exactly sure where to find a panda styled chronograph with time indicators at the 12 and 6 area, but here is one from Seagull. I'm personally not a fan of the Seagull brand. Mechanical movement
Little more than 300, but it's a fan favorite among this community. It also comes with an automatic movement
You can check the r/watches official buying guide for sub $250 watches. Here
For something quite similar you might check out this Seiko SNAE65 or the SNN079P2
I bought an SRP775, and i absolutely love it.
I was hell bent on getting a SKX007 but i started looking at pictures of the SRP775 and stalked Amazon for sales, picked one up for $260.00, the watch is fantastic
While you could argue that it's not technically a field watch, I love my Seiko SARG005 and at about $300 it's a hell of a deal. Somewhat different look that the Khaki Field, but thought I'd throw it out there.
You might also check out the outdoor series from Archimede.
As my graduation present I got myself the Seiko SNE107. The watch (as most Seikos are) is of superb quality. however, I've never seen this watch specifically get any love. The watch has a case diameter of 42 mm. The bezel is very nice, not too loose and not too tight. The watch is pretty heavy, but that is to be expected when buying a diving watch. Screw down crown works well, no wobble. Hardex crystal is good. Only complaint is the pin and collar bracelet. Also, the bracelet is a little small for the watch IMO. That can be easily fixed with a NATO/Rubber strap. The hands are are nice and its very easy to read. The lume is great, nothing to complain about at all. The day date function is nice, Saturday and Sunday are different colors than the weekdays for those that like that. The watch is solar powered, but that should be no turn off, leave the watch in the sun for a couple hours when first receiving the watch and you'll be good. Overall it is a fantastic watch for its price, I do recommend it.

I've used this Nikwax on clothes before and it worked really well. This one is used in the washing machine but I think they sell a spray version too for bigger items.
You should check out its older brother, [the Black Ray] (http://www.amazon.com/Orient-Black-Automatic-Watch-CEM65008B/dp/B007BF61GO/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1335371966&sr=8-1)
I have like 15 pairs of these. They're very expensive, but you can usually get a pro deal and it brings them down to about 15/pr.
I've used smart wool, and I very much prefer these. Plus they're made in America and carry a lifetime warranty, so if you ever wear them out you can send them in for a new pair.
Maybe they use two different movements in different watches? I'm just going off what I've seen online for their Pro Divers.

Take a paper towel, hold it inside the jacket while you run water from a tap on the outside. If the towel stays dry, then your jacket is fine; its just wetting-out.
I've been told me to wash rain jackets about once a season, and to use special detergent. The only one I've used is nikwax, but its worked quite well.
To stop the jacket from wetting-out, use a DWR treatment, included in that link above.
To be honest, I think it looks fine on your wrist. As far as sub $100 automatics, Amazon.com search will help:) (40mm+, <$100, men's, automatic self-wind).
Been looking at watches myself the last week, read somewhere that Invicta and Fossil is not so good quality - I do however see a lot of people with Orient watches (example).
There's always the SARG005
http://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B00G9XRY92/ref=mp_s_a_1_1?qid=1464183789&sr=8-1&pi=SY200_QL40&keywords=seiko+sarg005&dpPl=1&dpID=51hvW9sNsAL&ref=plSrch
I'm not sure, I've never even heard of Claude Bernard. My guess is they buy ETA movements (which are "technically" Swiss), put them in a case, and claim they're "Swiss Made". For my money, I'd rather spend it on a watch with verified history, like a Seiko, or Citizen. Quartz is fine in your situation, if you want a chronograph, since automatic chrono movements are complex and expensive to manufacture. The one exception I can think of, if you really want an automatic chrono, is a Seagull 1963. Great watches, legendary Chinese watchmakers, and on my list for my next purchase. As a final point, "Swiss Made" doesn't mean quality, per se. In your price range, most of the nicest watches are made in Japan (Seiko and Orient), Russia (Vostok), and China (Seagull). Shop around and don't get too hung up on the Swiss label.
edit: I also just realized the Nighthawk isn't a chronograph. I didn't take the time to think it through because I don't really like them.
I'd recommend something like this Hamilton Jazzmaster or the Tissot PRC200. Careful with the latter, as they are often faked.
Given that, I would also tell your friend that his lawyer buddies will probably not be impressed with these watches, as their budgets will be considerably higher.
You can get a very clean Christopher Ward watch with a Swiss movement for under $500. I just purchased this Christopher Ward "flieger" (German flight watch) style piece, and I love it.
I'm finding that at the $400-$500 range you have a huge variety of decent quality timepieces to choose from. I can afford more expensive watches, but I'm still uncomfortable with the idea of anything more than $1K on my wrist.
By the way, by no means do you even have to spend that much for a great watch. The Orient Blue Mako and the Seiko Monster are popular and well regarded, and they're both inexpensive.
My current daily watch is an omega dynamic that I'm very happy with.
It's expensive, but seiko makes some similar watches in your price range.
Or, another low budget favourite of mine is the orient ray. It's a decent quality, nicely designed diver.
I'd recommend the Tissot PRC 200 or V8 for a chrono in that price range
V8 On Leather
PRC 200 on Leather
PRC 200 on Steel
Other brands I'm that I'm sure will get mentioned: Orient (Japan), Seiko (Seiko), Hamilton (Swiss), Christopher Ward (Swiss). For under $300, you're looking at a quartz movement, which is fine.
If you just want a cheap, good quality sport chrono, I'd probably get a Seiko while you save for something nicer (if you want to)
Orient Black Ray.
Bought this watch from amazon a couple weeks ago. Tried it on with a new strap and it has been sitting on my watch box since. Includes everything pictured.

Hey Reddit! I'm here today looking to trade my great condition seiko SNN079P2 it has a Quartz movement. I got it from a fellow redditor on here a few months ago in a trade and it is sadly not getting the wrist wear it deserves. It is a great watch but I am just looking for something a little different.
I am including a lot of extra straps today. On it already is a black Hadley Roma in pretty nice shape 7/10, a longer brown with white stitching Hadley Roma 10/10 I don't even think I ever wore it after trying it on the first time and finding out it doesn't fit my baby wrists. Original strap will be included along with 2 NATOs.
I am looking to trade for something unique. I love vintage, but if it is interesting I will always consider newer. I absolutely adore anything funky looking (70s style!) I would prefer automatic or mechanical but I will consider electric and Quartz. I am really open to anything. Honestly I will consider anything sub 42mm that runs
If you have anything you think I may be interested in please send me a PM, no need to include details, just a quick pic will do to see if I would be interested (I don't want to waste anybody's time here).

~$100. I've found some Citizen and Seiko watches online like this, this, and this one. I'm looking for something that's not too busy that could also be worn in a more formal setting.
Darn Tough's are the only socks I wear.
Summer is Darn Tough Men's No Show Ultralight (http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B002DWVS1S)
Winter is Darn Tough Vermont Men's Merino Wool Micro Crew Cushion Hiking Socks (http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0010Y26NY)
I know a lot of people like Smart Wool but I've personally found them to wear out fairly quickly. Also you just can't beat the Darn Tough life time warranty.
I own three pairs of each. When traveling / one bagging I just bring two pairs and it works out perfect. I wouldn't hesitate in the slightest to give them a go.
Good luck!
yes! Just got it in the last couple of months. heres the link for it: watch link
I am looking to buy these Darn Tough No Show socks to run in and general wear. I am not training for any events just trying to get back into running. Should I buy them?
Edit: Thanks everyone. I wear Darn Tough socks everyday but the socks I have are normal length socks, crew length? And I wanted to see your opinions. It is getting hotter now and I need some shorter length socks.
Entitled to your opinion of course but I'd like to know, why? How do you think that an automatic mechanical watch that is both hack and hand wind not worth it? Not to mention the solid link stainless steel oyster style bracelet? (I swapped the bracelet for a Olive Zulu with PVD hardware) Granted I've had it for a couple weeks so it hasn't "proven" itself but everything feels solid. The 1mm play in the bezel is the biggest gripe but for less than $40, I'm pleased. Can't we all hate on Invicta together? JK all you Pro Diver owners lurking out there

Description: I purchased this watch as a beater and so far, have been super impressed. I threw it in this category because I think it's on the top of the line of daily drivers with lots of features that not only are useful in your day to day, but that improve the lifespan of the watch.
First and foremost, the major upgrades from the GG-1000 include a sapphire face which should have no problem keeping scratch free for years with its inlaid bezel under the case top. Along with that, a 6 band Atomic Timekeeping Receiver can automatically sync with atomic stations in the US, Japan, China, and Europe is another added feature that is an upgrade from the GG-1000. Lastly, a Tough Solar power unit keeps you running for years, so you won't have to worry about battery replacement.
Some extra day to day features include, 5 Alarms, a stopwatch, a timer, world clock, vibration resistance, waterproof 200m, and dirt/mud resistance with gaskets on the crown and button cylinders. How resistant is it? Time will tell, but it should be fine for day to day use. Included as well is a barometer, altimeter, thermometer, and compass which honestly I don't use much. I do get chances to use the compass and altimeter when camping, and was surprised by how accurate it was, but the only sensor is a barometer to measure altitude, so depending on reference values and weather conditions, might vary in accuracy.
There are some quirks. I am not sure why a sunset/sunrise mode is not included in the model, since it definitely is included in lesser models. Also, I still haven't figured out how to snooze an alarm, and it appears the module 5463 does not include the snooze feature. I do think the most annoying quirk is that it's really difficult to use the crown while it's still on your wrist, since it requires a few turns to unlock it. All in all I think this is on the high end of the daily drivers that's pretty stylish for day to day use, with some extra features to boot that you won't get in a mechanical watch.

Great News: Orient.
This Orient Ray is 41.5mm http://www.amazon.com/Orient-Black-Automatic-Watch-CEM65008B/dp/B007BF61GO/ref=sr_1_2?s=watches&ie=UTF8&qid=1394850903&sr=1-2&keywords=mako
This Orient Mako (not on a bracelet) is 41mm and a mere $104 and has an automatic movement http://www.amazon.com/Orient-CEM65004B-Black-Automatic-Rubber/dp/B001EWEQ4E/ref=sr_1_1?s=watches&ie=UTF8&qid=1394850815&sr=1-1&keywords=orient+mako

I really don't think you can do much better than Darn Tough Socks, they aren't cheap, but they are comfy, warm, will last for years, and they even come with a lifetime guarantee.
If you're talking Citizen (ecodrive) it may be more worth your while to check out some of Seikos solar watches rather than kinetics. For example, the SNE divers. It's also $50 cheaper than the SKA371. Although not a chrono. But they have solar chrono divers too in the SSC line. That one is also still $20 cheaper than the SKA.
Thanks! The watch is this one
How about this?
Take a look at this Orient Black Ray
Orient is owned by Seiko. They are pretty good watches, and this looks more like the Omega than the similarly priced Seikos.

Not sure how one makes it this far in life and not know the secrets of walking in the rain, but the popular method of not getting wet in a rainstorm is a combination of umbrella, rainsuit, and rainboots.
I don't think this is unique to Chicago but who knows.
Maybe ask /r/weather or /r/meteorology for advanced rain-aversion techniques.

This one, I bought 2 suits UL2 FToggs
I'm not a fan of quartzs and/or chronos, so I'd say that if these are your only 2 options, then go for the Orient - although I think the double crowns look a bit odd.
Although this one's not a 'nice' watch, it's an automatic, it can take a beating, looks cool, has incredible lume, screw-down crown, uni-directional bezel, and is a must-have for any new watch collector on a tight budget:
Seiko Black Monster
Seiko Orange Monster
Lastly, don't overlook Raymond Weil for a nice watch in the $500 price range - Amazon is full of them.
my $.02
Really cold (like <10°F). I like that it wraps down over my ears. And I can stick some speakers in them. Also gives me a nice permanent perch for one of my lights.
I usually wear thin hood/balaclava under it. When its really cold, I go with a full face balaclava and some ski/board goggles.
Helmet, balaclava & goggles.
They made one w/ a swiss movement and a sapphire crystal a while back. My friend has had it for over 5 years. It's been a good watch. I think I found it LNIB for $120 or something crazy like that.
http://www.amazon.com/Invicta-Diver-Collection-Coin-Edge-Automatic/dp/B00AH3DCAA/ref=cm_cr_pr_product_top?ie=UTF8
FroggToggs. Pants weigh about 5oz. Still ugly, but they come in different colors and they're cheap. Just a note, the fit is one size bigger than normal. I'm 5'10" and the small fits me. Medium was too long.
I try to run outside even when it's super cold (-20F). Mittens are better than gloves because your fingers keep each other warm. Running masks need vent holes for more airflow, ones like this don't allow for enough airflow and make me feel like I'm suffocating. Running tights are great, but you may need ones with some wind protection for your front region.

[Orient Ray Blue EM6500CD]
Price: About 200$
Movement: Automatic
Style: Diver
Size: 42mm
Link: amazon
Description: This is, probably, the best watch selling for under 250$. The blue sunburst dial is captivating, the bezel is sturdy and has a deep blue colour that really stands out. The dial features dots for hour markers and the lume on this thing is just outstanding, certainly at this price point.
I've replaced the rubber bracelet on mine for several nato's along the way but recently I fitted a brown Hirsch + butterfly deployant clasp combo that I had lying around. The whole combo works really well and makes this unassuming Orient even better IMHO.
I bought mine on Amazon for 115 GBP but now it seems to be selling for more than double that. I'm certain it can still be found for under 200$ though.
This seiko has some of that design
http://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B000HCYGMO/ref=pd_aw_sbs_9?pi=SY115
I really like the panda look of the Seagull 1963, but I'm not sure how good it is as a watch. How's the build quality? Is it worth the money? If not, are there other watches with similar style that you would recommend?
I use this. If you are looking for more options then read more here
If you want a dive watch:
http://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B004JONRWG/ref=mp_s_a_1_3?qid=1450642061&sr=8-3&pi=SY200_QL40&keywords=seiko+solar+dive&dpPl=1&dpID=51ju67WzpvL&ref=plSrch
I'd have thought people would recommend the mudmaster. It's a huge watch, altimeter/ barometer/ compass, anadigi, totally bombproof. Expensive, though. https://www.amazon.com/CASIO-G-SHOCK-MUDMASTER-GWG-1000-1AJF-Japan/dp/B012FC5I4I It's also got a little brother https://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B01DTJNCOE/ref=mp_s_a_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1483832364&sr=8-1&pi=AC_SX236_SY340_FMwebp_QL65&keywords=mudmaster&dpPl=1&dpID=51XBYSszTFL&ref=plSrch with just as much toughness, sans a few features.
If you hunt you can get an SRP775 or SRP777 for $350 or so
https://www.amazon.com/Seiko-SRP775-Automatic-Diver-Stainless/dp/B01AMI4GWC?ie=UTF8&*Version*=1&*entries*=0
Basically an upgraded version of the SKX (much better bracelet, hacking and hand-winding movement). One of my favorites in my collection.
They're an OK brand, but $250 is way too much for a simple quartz like this. Just 200m diver is nothing special, OK it has a sapphire crystal, but so do most watches like this.
If you want a quartz diver then you can probably do far better. Heck, you can get something like this that is $150, and it's a great respected make too.
I don't really like to spend over 100 for a standard quartz watch. This Wenger isn't a chronograph, isn't a special ATM depth... I can't really see why it's so pricey. It's about $150 overpriced as far as I can see.
I own one of these bad boys, the Seiko SNE107 Sunburst Solar Diver. Not their most popular diver, but it's a great watch. The metal bracelet could be put together better, but I normally wear mine with a nylon or leather NATO.
you´re willing to get a low grade, low end swiss watch just becuase you want 28,800 BPH and swiss made printed on it ?
Decent swiss watches come at a premium...
You might be able to find something 2nd hand, but ceramic bezels, and titanium... thats a bit out of your price range.
Or an invicta pro diver.

Tissot PRC200
I own a PRC200 with a blue dial, and love it.
At any brick and mortar store that sells five toed shoes, but only one company really makes them. The cheapest (and best IMO) sock costs 10 bucks a pair, but it's totally worth it to be able to wear socks in your vibrams.
And since I'm such a nice fellow, I'll link you to them: http://www.amazon.com/injinji-Performance-Mini-Crew-Toesocks/dp/B002WN2L6Y
Injinji is the brand name. :p

Buy one or two pair and make sure you like them. Use them in everyday life, including 2-3 days worn, hanging to air out overnight if possible.
Darn Tough is what I wear almost exclusively now, regardless if I’m traveling or at home. I wear the low cut ones in warm months and taller ones during cold weather.

Depending on when your birthday is (or if you're willing to wait a bit past it) the Certina DS-2 is probably the best watch you can get in that price range (once it's released). It's TC quartz, accuracy rated to within 10 seconds per year. The Chronograph DS-2 has been very well received on WUS.
The Bulova Precisionist Langford is another option, it's also rated to within 10 seconds per year, but is non TC, and sometimes runs a little out of spec (with 20 seconds). The hand beats 16 times per second, so it has the appearance of moving smoothly.
Both of these will deliver on quality timekeeping. If you get anything else in that price range except a Casio RC (which doesn't have the look you want at that price range), it won't keep time nearly as well. This will either be a regular quartz watch which keeps time to within 15 seconds per month (~1/10th as accurate), or a mechanical watch, which at that price point will keep time to within 20-40 seconds per day (~1/1400th as accurate).
When you're talking about mechanical watches, quality takes on a bit of a different meaning, because the accurate timekeeping ship has sailed since we got quartz watches. There quality would be best measured by how long it can go without servicing (both the Certina and Bulova will at a minimum need their batteries replaced every few years), and in that regard a Seiko with a 6R15 movement, such as the SARG005 (unfortunately, Seiko doesn't name their watches well at the mid range) would be one of the best options at that price point. The 6R15 is a newer movement based on the 7S26 (which has a very good track record for keeping on ticking after a long time without maintenance). You will have to set the time every few days though to keep it accurate to the minute.
That Timex Expedition is really good looking.
I'm sorry this will be outside of your budget, but my first choice would be an Eco Drive.
Check the Bulova 96A102 and Stuhrling.
If I am not mistaken, Nautica is manufactured by Timex and they have made models in this style.
Agreed. Certainly not BIFL, but not intended to be. They (pants + jacket) cost around $20 and pack up small so you won't get caught without. I often only bother with the jacket, but the pants are nice to have.

Unfortunately, the bracelet is where a lot of the low end watches skimp at. There are some good options though.
If you want an automatic, I would go with an Orient Mako (although the endlinks and pins are a little cheap) or a Seiko Monster.
If you want quartz, I would look at the Casio Edifice line or maybe a Bulova Precisionist. Tissot Classic Dream if you want something a little fancier.
This is just a starting point, read the sidebar and search around until you find something that suits you. Also, if possible try on as many watches in person to really get a feel for what you like.
My daily is an Invicta 9937 but someday I'll own a proper Submariner.

High school budget... invest in nice boots/outerwear. Everything else can be found from Target or similar.
For example... if you really want a nice shawl cardigan, go ahead and get one with a 25% off coupon from J.Crew. Want some really nice boots? Don't be afraid to have them be your most expensive purchase in your wardrobe.
But for basics like tees and shirts, Target is just fine. Hell... I still rock a $5 "premium" Hanes tee when I know I'll be sweating outdoors. My most frequently worn socks are these Darn Tough Merino wool socks They may be $14 a pair, but I believe they carry a lifetime warranty. Extremely comfortable and I haven't even had one wear out on me yet! I recommend everyone try at least one pair to check them out and see if merino wool socks are for them.
OCBDs and most shirts... to be honest, I think name brands are a bit overrated for simple OCBDs and similar shirts. Sure they can be made of different material and vary in comfort... but they're all very similar and 99.9% of the people around you will never be able to tell the difference. I've never had a single person tell apart one of my $500 Ralph Lauren Purple Label shirt from my J.Crew ones. It's not like they're going to reach out and feel your shirt every time to check lol. The MAIN thing is fit!!! Fit is king! Try a bunch on and find one that fits you decently. I won't recommend tailoring all your OCBDs and shirts immediately as I find high schoolers can have huge variation in their bodies as they continue growing.
Putting together outfits... woah. Honestly... I'd just look up a bunch of popular instagrammers and the WAYWT threads on here and just keep on clicking. Maybe take some notes on what really really pulls you and draws in your imagination/taste.
cheap on Amazon
I got my set for like $16. I returned my OR Helium 2 after getting completely soaked in it on a 10 mile hike in the rain. It sucks to get soaking wet while wearing a rain jacket that costs that much. The Frogg Toggs UL jacket has kept me BONE DRY
Moving sale! Got fired from my job and now I'm going back home so I have a lot of odds and end type shit and some furniture I want to get rid of. Prices are fixed, but only because I'm already lowballing everything because I just want to get rid of it. I'll post pictures of the actual item based on interest.

edit: New Stuff!!
Black and Decker toaster oven. Like new, been using it for 3 months to make small batch cookies, toast sandwiches, cook biscuits, and heat up food. It's a small one that I basically had for guests as I don't drink coffee. - $5sale pendingGore actually has series of different products within their line up (currently: ProShell, Performance Shell, Paclite, Active, and XCR), each with slightly different properties. Nowadays, XCR is only used in footwear. So depending on the age of your raingear, it could be a whole different type of fabric in your raingear. Check the label, it'll tell you what kind is loaded in.
But in general, Gore clothing will fail in a different manner than footwear (which is basically the membrane getting unseated from the footbed) - the most frequent offender is a lack of maintenance / user error, followed by seam failure which is a manufacturing issue.
The trick to Gore style membranes is keeping them clean. But you can't clean them with over the counter detergents - detergents have water softeners and other chemicals that allow water to penetrate deeper into fabrics. These are really difficult to rinse out, and remain within fabrics for a long time. Detergents also seriously weaken the durable water repellent (DWR) coating that's applied to the face fabric - that's the stuff that makes raingear bead up and fall off.
I can go deeper into raingear and the science behind it, but I'll refrain from nerding out on you.
Anyway, the key is washing your raingear and reproofing it frequently. I usually suggest either Nikwax, which is a polymerised wax coating, or [Grangers] (http://www.amazon.com/Grangers-One-Step-Wash-Waterproofer/dp/B006ZJJ5I8/ref=pd_sim_sg_5), which uses a flourocarbon based coating.
This was the watch that first popped into my head, followed by the Seiko SNN079P2 (no longer in stock on Amazon, but here it is for reference):

I plan to change the strap so that doesn't make a difference, I'm also not planning to actually go diving with either of them so it's more about the looks. I however don't know anything about watch quality or watch movements and the online reviews weren't really conclusive.
To me the choice here is obvious:
Black Monster @ $200
or even cheaper, but less WR...
Baby Black Monster @ $110
Monster side-by-side with SMP
Monster and Baby Monster
Same here. I would love a really nice watch someday though. I'm fine with mid tier watches though. Right now I'm waffling between a Seiko Turtle or a Maranez.
That Certina is powered by an ETA 2824-2. Now, this is definitely the wrong forum to go against anything Seiko-related, so I'll simply say that the Seiko movement most comparable to the 2824-2 in terms of quality and reliability is the 6R15, which is found in some very popular models.
Actually a lot of options, so you'll have to suss out what tickles your fancy. A few off the top of my head:
If you don't need the subdials to be 3/9 but instead could tolerate 6/12 then there are some quartz seikos that can be had for cheap.
Album with other bands
I absolutely love my Blue Mako. It was a gift from my girlfriend in December and I picked the version with the rubber strap because I knew I would change it any way. Until about a week ago I wore it with the blue NATO, but I recently purchased the leather NATO and fell in love again.
I haven't officially tested the time, but unofficially it has been great. "The School of Horology" reviewed the movement and it performed very well. (Incredibly well for a $100.00 US watch.) Video
The watch was purchased on Amazon.com and is available now for just under $100.00 US. Amazon Link
I honestly don't have any cons for this watch. It quickly became my daily watch due to its durability and versatile style, due to the strap changes. I've banged this thing into all sorts of stuff and it's held up like a champ. The value is incredible and for $20.00 strap you can give it a total face lift.

I think it's a great idea to make your first pack with cheap ($$) stuff, and then spend money on later packs, once you've gained some knowledge, techniques, and preferences on what you like in a pack.
So, to address the other comments, presumably - I say, because I haven't tried it - you could use some fray-stop on your seams to help them hold. Maybe silicon seam sealer?
For the water, you could try and apply water resistance with a Wash in product, a spray, or some people do wash and spray after. If washing, I'd do it before constructing, spray could happen after, but I'm hypothesizing, as I haven't used either.
Probably should still use a trash compactor liner but it would help keeping the water from weighing your pack down.
Thanks again!
I don't get why this post gets downvoted, wish I had more opinions! :)
If you don't mind, what do you think of these?
the oatmeal, olive, and blue/oatmeal will work fine with those if you want Darn Toughs.
boom squared
Watch or jewelry shops in your area might have some. For budget-friendly options, try Hadley Roma on Amazon, usually $15-30. You just need a small screwdriver and a steady hand to push back the spring bar from the lug on the watch case. You'll typically need a width of 22mm, maybe 20 or 24; just measure the distance between the lugs or check the specs.
For a high quality watch for your dollar, especially your first (or first serious) watch, try a Citizen Eco-drive, Seiko, or Orient. Many of these don't require a battery change every couple years: the Eco-drives charge its battery from any light source, though this battery may have to be replaced after a decade. An Automatic winding watch, like the Seiko 5 line or the Orient Mako or Ray, use the movement of a counterweight (rotor) while you wear it to store energy in a spring. This energy will run out after about 1.5 days, so either wear it or shake it around every day.
A Timex Expedition served me well for a while, but I sure like my Citizens, Orient Ray, and Seiko 5 Military.
well let's look at the amazon order I just made.
camera - $200
tablet - $180
shirt - $20

heart thing for wife - $70
loppers - $30
bt headphones - $50
foodsaver - $100
jeggings (wife) - $20
bra (wife) - $30
plan weights - $10
socks - $10
That leaves me with another $260 to spend...
I'm going to delete the wife stuff and the socks...
and go $10 over by buying a PS4 - $400
I can buy games for it later
Ah, I misread it. You want Paul Newman’s Daytona, but couldn’t quite match the $17.8 million top bid :-)
Not my area of expertise, unfortunately. That said, citizen eco-drive watches are good at that kind of price point. They do some nice looking chronos.
The Dan Henry 1963 is quite classic looking, sold as a pilots watch, but honestly, looks like it belongs in a car too.
You won’t get an auto Chronograph under $500. Seagull do handwinding watches at that price, if you like the styling.
If you want a mechanical watch, I would recommend the Orient Union, Millenium, or Vintage (in order of price). The Millenium (that's how they spell it) has a metal band but you could easily afford a leather one as well within your budget once you factor in the 50% off coupon code floating around.
If you'd prefer one closer to that Kenneth Cole you'll have to go quartz, but the Tissot PRC200 would be your best selection. Here is the amazon link: http://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B000B7MBHM/ref=aw_d_iv_watches?is=l&qid=1323692800&sr=8-3
Sorry I didn't provide more links, on my way to work so I'm on my phone on the train.
In fact, Seagull the watch company (related to but not the same as the folks who make the movement) makes a lovely panda dial using this movement:
https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00HMC0L1M/ref=oh_aui_search_detailpage?ie=UTF8&psc=1
It's not as racing-oriented as the Lamberti or any of the other panda dials that use orange hands (like the Helgray Silverstone), but it's still pretty boss.
I have these. It doesn't rain a lot in Southern California. I've used these a few times and they work pretty well.
http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B007SF1DAQ/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o08_s01?ie=UTF8&psc=1
I wanted to have something with white dial to wear daily, I'd grown tired of black dials so I bought Citizen BV1080-18A for its superior contrast and legibility. It's been one of my best purchases in recent times and I'm really happy with it. I had to remove stock strap because it was too long for me, replaced with a bracelet and it's like a whole different watch now. Super comfortable, super legible.

Seconding this.
I have a good amount of quality socks from when I was testing out different brands. CHUP, Anonymous Ism, People Socks, Wigwam, Smartwool, Kapital, Kirkland, Carhartt, Orvis and Darn Tough.
Darn Tough is easily my favorite, it really isn't even close. I don't think I will buy any other socks unless someone makes a really compelling argument to try out a different brand.
Just buy Darn Tough for everything. I have a thicker boot pair that is my favorite, a thinner type of the same length that is great for my closer fitting boots or sneakers and I have a pair that is about ankle height.
Actually sorry this is the internet.

No, I can't. Timex is well known for dominating the extreme low end of the market in terms of quality/price. All I'm saying is that I think it looks bad and for a casual watch I'd suggest something else, even a different Timex. You might have to be willing to spend 100 dollars on a watch, which for reference, is a very low amount for a watch. You can have your cheap digital watch for sports and a nicer one for day wearing. Personally, I love the look of plain chronographs, so for a casual watch I'd recommend something like:
http://www.amazon.com/Tissot-T17151632-T-Sport-PRC200-Watch/dp/B000B7MBHM/ref=sr_1_4?s=watches&ie=UTF8&qid=1345131884&sr=1-4&keywords=tissot+chronograph
or
http://www.amazon.com/Timex-T2N701DH-Intelligent-Quartz-Series/dp/B0053EXKVE/ref=wl_it_dp_o_pdT11_S?ie=UTF8&coliid=IZ3S0WFW7TA3Q&colid=1GOTTUYR2DTX4
The least you could do is upgrade to a Seiko 5, which will cost you 50 dollars more and look much better. Or even a Timex Expedition! Just 10 dollars more and it looks so much better than a Weekender.
I know. I'm lukewarm on dive watches, but I really like the deep, saphire blue of the Ray. They have it on Amazon, but with a rubber strap.
it could be unisex, but it's definitely not a big man's dive watch
