Rii’s psych report 25—Link to previous

And here I was worried that Rii would be all better after Chapter 54!

In Report #20, back in January of 2016, I said the following:

> Rather, Ruu exists as a way for Yuri to deal with Yuki’s newfound independence, and Yuri’s general unwillingness to alter the status-quo. She doesn’t want Yuki to recover, because her relationship as ‘protector’ to Yuki was how she defined herself.

My personal expectation was that Rii was going to hit a breaking point in chapter 59 and come to terms with whatever happened with Ruu, but this is being placed in jeopardy by Rii’s seemingly inoccuous comment on page 6 where she says that they can’t keep solely relying on Kurumi. She follows up on the next page with “We can’t lose… no matter what… I’ll do whatever it takes.” While this looks good and optimistic, I’m going to let lose my raging inner pessimist for a moment and tell you why this is a troubling thing.

Supposing that Ruu only existed because Rii needed to function as a ‘protector,’ and supposing that Rii became aware of Kurumi’s condition with Aosoi’s announcement, then Rii doesn’t need Ruu anymore, because she’s found someone familiar and living to latch on to. Add onto this the fact that Kurumi’s initial infection was a source for Rii’s first breakdown, and we see a return to the same parasitic cycle that Rii used to support her own sanity during Yuki’s hallucinations.

Therefore, it may shock some of you that I’m making good on my last report and moving Rii back to a REACTING status. Yes, we are still lacking a firm resolution to Ruu, but we are seeing some significant improvement in terms of Rii’s interactions with others and the way she feels about herself. Granted, the means by which she reached this state are morally questionable, but the situation is what it is.

Aside from leeching off of Kurumi, how did Rii get back to this state? I was lucky to find an online copy of my subscription to The Leader which covers some key points about in-the-field psychological recovery techniques on page 16. Chapter 58 and some components of the preceding chapters are a shot-for-shot take on many of these points. Rii herself is no longer in immediate physical danger, she’s surrounded by trustworthy people who are keeping her busy, and their expedition towards Randall Corp. gives her a reason to believe that the nightmare of the past few months has a potential exit.

The next chapter is chapter 59. If it follows the high school arc, Rii should have her finally reconciliation with the whole Ruu affair… except that she seems to be in an improved mood, so this final reconciliation is not guaranteed. That said, Yuki was substantially more determined and connected with reality in Chapter 28 than she was at any preceding point, so we may still be on track for some tears in the next chapter.

Back to beginning

      Chekhov’s Knife

      > Chapter 28 was a big one in the High School Arc. Kurumi and Miki fighting their way out of burning helicopter wreckage, Rii losing her mind, and Yuki taking charge.

While Miki’s breakdown doesn’t seem to be as dramatic as Riis, it’s still there, and still significant. Miki is visibly depressed over the concept of the airborne virus. Much like Yuki and Rii, the source of her depression is a panic over whether or not the girls will survive. Also curious is how her first hallucination mirrors her core character element. Yuki was always about creating a happy, positive atmosphere, so her hallucinations were about creating a happy school environment despite the post-apocalyptic reality. Rii always strived to fill a role as protector, so her hallucinations were about creating something to protect once Yuki’s growing maturity deprived her of that. Miki has always been focused on guaranteeing her survival, so her hallucination is a constant reminder of the airborne virus—an enemy that they cannot escape and that will eventually catch up to them… and which will eventually need to be dealt with when (not if) it finally hits one of the girls.

To this end, Miki picks up the knife. I think that this is a brilliant callback to the high school arc by Chiba, as it forces us to recall the scene between Kurumi and Rii. Knives, it seems, are a potential Gurashi-killer, and here we see Miki secretly taking one. Since it’s useless as a ranged weapon, it seems fair to think that Miki is planning on using it against one of the other girls or Kurumi, if the infection takes them first. Miki doesn’t want to believe that she has stooped to the same level as the MFC, but the simple presence of the knife argues otherwise.

This raises lots of questions. How will Rii react once she sees the knife? Does Miki have the guts to use it? Might Aosoi find it and consider using it instead (Kaihou and Chiba took time to show us that she kills zombies with zero remorse)? Would Kurumi go behind Yuki’s back and insist that Miki use it on her? It’s the familiar potential for drama, but we probably won’t see the outcome for a long, long time.

Fun fact, Miki’s notebook is real and purchasable.

When you say full-sized, do you mean A4, B4, A5, B5? Something like that, or even a range of inches/cm would be helpful. Still, for what you state, I'd recommend checking out the following:

Nanami 7-Seas writer (A5 size): http://www.nanamipaper.com/products/seven-seas-writer-a5-journal-4th-edition.html These notebooks/journals use a cloth binding and come with the incredibly fountain pen friendly Tomoe River paper. Though cloth bound, having a large number of small signatures ensures the notebook is able to lie flat, providing the best writing experience it can.

Maruman Mnemosyne Notebooks: https://www.gouletpens.com/maruman-mnemosyne/c/365

These are a personal favorite of mine, possessing many of the qualities that both Tomoe River and Rhodia/Clairefontaine are prized for. The paper is much thicker than Tomoe River, yet it still lends inks almost the same amazing sheen capabilities. You won't have any issues with bleeding or show through unless using Pilot Parallels, and even then you'll likely need a few passes. Top quality all around.

Others to consider:

Rhodia/Clairefontaine spiral bound notebooks: https://www.gouletpens.com/notebooks/c/10/?sortBy=productName%2Basc&facetValueFilter=Tenant~Brand%3Aclairefontaine%2CTenant~Brand%3Arhodia%2CTenant~Binding_Type%3Awirebound

These come in a variety of sizes, and actually lie flat with larger page counts. I've a cloth bound clairefontaine which I find a chore to write in because of how unpleasant it is to write near the binding.

Life Noble Notebook: This can be found in a few places, which I'll link at the end. Pricing ranges widely, they are a japanese notebook brand. I'm not a super big fan of the cream color pages (I'd prefer pure white) but the notebooks hold up excellently, have a variety of sizing, rulings, and bindings, and provide virtually no show through even with big, broad nibs. Unlike any of the others, there is also an attractive leather notebook cover you can purchase to protect your notebook in use.

Nanami paper (the 7-Seas site) carries them but they're not currently in stock at the moment: http://www.nanamipaper.com/categories/write/notebooks-from-japan.html

At amazon: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B007C0NA5S/ref=ox_sc_act_title_1?ie=UTF8&psc=1&smid=A16AH8LR75ICJ2 (looks like it's top bound)
https://www.amazon.com/LIFE-A4-N37-NOTEBOOK-RULED/dp/B003YU0WCE/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1480356054&sr=8-1&keywords=life+notebook+a4 (looks side bound)

NOTE: On the nanami paper site you'll also see Kokuyo notebooks, which I've heard great things about, but having never used them myself don't feel comfortable recommending.

u/the_lightist · 6 pointsr/fountainpens

If you're in America: Black N Red, Clairfontaine, Rhodia can all be had in spiral notebook form. (the Rhodia is top spiral bound)
Also, as I think someone else mentioned HP Premium laser 32lbs is very thick strong and FP friendly, almost no ink gets through. It is smooth, but the inks have a rougher look versus the other brands I listed, but this HP paper premium laser is IMO, miles better than Clairfontaine DCP. I have and regularly use all of these. While each have subtle pros and cons, all work great with FP's.

Honorable mentions: If you want to spend a bit more then you can try the Tomoe River offerings or Midori MD notebooks with thinner and generally smoother paper. Not really a notebook, but amazingly smooth paper is the top of the line Clairefontaine triomphe paper. All Rhodia/Clairefontaine papers are not equal.

Leuchtturm1917 is terrible, Life notebooks bleed easy, Maruman notebooks dont bleed much, but have a weird feeling I personally dont like. I have tried others that aren't noteworthy.

edit: PS: I also have this wonderful, but overpriced Quo Vadis Habana notebook. It is like an ivory colored, triomphe paper, for 2x as much and a pleather cover. But I found it at a B&M store with just the shade of turquoise to match my TWSBI ECO.

u/apkayle · 6 pointsr/fountainpens

I really like the Kokuyo notebook covers, particularly the B5 cover that holds up to 4 notebooks without getting too fat. It also has card holders and a pen holder, although I seldom use that holder unless I have a cheap rugged pen on hand. The cover is made of a canvas material and holds up pretty damn well.

https://www.amazon.com/Kokuyo-Systemic-Refillable-Notebook-Cover/dp/B0049KEEHM

The notebook that comes with it is pretty awesome as well.

edit: Here's a great video on some Japanese notebook holders: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HG68s_bHF0Y

I forgot to add one note about the Kokuyo notebook cover: each notebook it stores is accessed easily without needing to remove any notebooks.

u/MelodyABC · 5 pointsr/notebooks

I'm fairly new to bujo and i just switched to multiple notebooks. Here goes... my $0.02 worth!

I started with Mnemosene 149(?) Which I think is B5 size. I loved the size a d couldn't see myself going down to A5 or smaller. I had a very hard time finding an organizing holder for multiple notebooks in that size, as A is mostly what's used in USA and Europe. I'm not thrilled with the ordinary look of this notebook, but it's a blank canvas to customize, and much sturdier than I initially thought. I may try my hand at needlepoint and add some little flowers along the top edge of the pocket. I liked this one especially with the extra fold-out 3rd section so I can hold more journals.

Kokuyo Systemic Refillable Notebook Cover - Twin Ring Notebook with Edge Title - Semi B5 (7" X 9.8") - Normal Rule - 35 Lines X 40 Sheets - Black Cove https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0049KEEHM/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apap_rLa2leAPZmOCQ

This paper us the same company so caught our eye. I love it! It is lined with subtle little dots along the line. This way you can use it as grid or for dot paper if you want to add straight lines, but it's very subtle so not distracting when you just want lined. In my few days of using it, I have had no bleed thru of fountain pens. It is soft and smooth. It comes in multiple other varieties too.

Kokuyo Campus NotebookRegla Semi B5Dotted 7mm30hojasPack de 5, colores https://www.amazon.com/dp/B002C4KL88/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apap_IVQSEdkgzwha7

I'm loving having multiple notebooks that all fit into one. I use them in different amounts of time so I can swap out one as I fill it without needing to waste pages from other sections. I currently have separate books for
bullet journaling (day week month)
long-term
journal/diary
creativity (sketch, ideas...)
*workbook/notes from a book I'm going thru.

Again, im pretty new to both bujo-ing and to Reddit. I hope I'm not being insulting by giving too much info.

Happy bujo-ing!

u/_Kyrk_ · 5 pointsr/fountainpens

They're not standards-sized nor perforated (if that's what you're also looking for), but I like Kokuyo Campus notebooks. They're pretty inexpensive for a pack of 10 with lined-dot paper – that is lined papers where you can also see dots for dot-grid writing.
I also found them fountain pen-friendly, but I never used any nib sizes larger than medium Pilots on them, so YMMV.

u/ixjctx · 3 pointsr/fountainpens

They're a tad more expensive than normal notebooks, but I quite like Black n' Red notebooks for everyday use. They behave very similarly to Rhodia notepads but for much less. I've also heard a lot of good about yoobi notebooks found at Target, but haven't tried them myself.

u/tedinasitcom · 3 pointsr/washingtondc

Black n' Red

I buoght one a few weeks ago and I've found it to be perfect. There's really nothing special about them, but they're just well made notebooks. I've noticed them everywhere since switching as well.

If price isn't an object, may I suggest using the creme de la creme of Japanese notebooks/planners?

https://www.1101.com/store/techo/en/lineup/

They have a variety of sizes, and the paper quality is amazing. I order one every year because nothing else even comes close to its quality and functionality.

Here's a video to showing you a snippet of all the amazing ways you can use yours.
https://youtu.be/iWMQ0M_FSL8

A good number of people use them for Japanese study as well, and I can post pictures on here via imgur if you'd like some hints on how to make the best use of your Hobonichi.

Another cool thing about the Hobonichi is that it was created by Shigesato Itoi who also created the Mother/Earthbound series. You'll see plenty of Earthbound covers on the site although they do sell really fast.

And if price is an object, check out the Life notebook series:

The SDC on campus runs skill development workshops you can register for (career central, under the co-curricular record events) which focus on academic tactics, if you're budgeting your time already and feel that sitting in for a 50 minute talk is a bad idea then you can still access the handouts that they use during these events on their website : https://www.uwo.ca/sdc/learning/selfhelp/skill_building_handouts/index.html

this link will lead to their catalogue of skill building handouts.

Other studying tips would be to adopt the cornell style of note taking, it dramatically improves readability if you get messy while note taking a fast paced lecture and it's really boosted my grades when it comes to fact recall for short answer questions, https://www.amazon.ca/FocusNotes-Notebook-Quarto-White-90223/dp/B002HG0JDS/ref=sr_1_2?crid=3C5EPRBPH17PE&keywords=cornell+notebook&qid=1568157102&s=gateway&sprefix=cornel%2Caps%2C172&sr=8-2

\^\^\^ link to the one I use, I normally split up the pages into 5 chunks and colour code the edge with a highlighter and it lasts me a term.

When I take notes while reading my textbook I usually try to condense and reword any concept down to the most imperative information, take a paragraph and squeeze it down to point format or just a sentence etc., etc.,

If your textbooks have any 'study break' questions USE THEM. They're honestly an amazing study tool.

Set up a course Quizlet and quiz yourself on your own 'chapter summary', doesn't have to be a huge deck of questions, just 5 or so that help you recall the main topics of the week, you could also make a deck of defined terms/concept glossary from the week.

Also, another big tip that'll make assigned readings easier would be to start studying for exams from day 1, this helps keep you on your reading schedule and it'll put all your readings in perspective, relating them back to the course and the stated course outcomes. I set up an exam study guide in OneNote per each course and fill it out week by week so that once exams come up I'm really just reviewing with no extra work involved, never had to cram or catch up on any readings since adopting this method. An exam study guide is a great place for you to summarize your textbook chapter notes.

The library is also a great place to really focus, you could keep a list of related texts/books per course and their call numbers on hand and then study in that general area of the library, if you ever need extra clarification on a concept you could check a different book's coverage of the material, maybe you'll add on some important information to your notes or find something interesting to discuss with your prof.

I've also heard you could bring your textbooks in to the SDC/learning centre or so and they would sort through the best study tactic per textbook depending on how it's structured.

Practice makes perfect and the more you take notes while studying, the less you'll actually be writing because you'll know where the important information is.

u/pahnts · 3 pointsr/notebooks

I've got an alternative option for you, just in case!

Environotes makes exactly what you're looking for, and they're fairly cheap! I've got a red one I picked up from my local bookstore, and I love it. Just did a fountain pen test on it too, my first one came in today. Minimal ghosting and the ink dries quick. Sugarcane paper, which is pretty cool as well!

http://www.amazon.com/Roaring-Spring-Sugarcane-Wireless-20198/dp/B007YCNFCC

Note: the entire notebook itself is 9 x 11", but when you tear out the paper it comes to exactly 8.5 x 11""

Personally, I enjoy using the Midori MD Notebook which you can get with grids, blank, or ruled. I also use the LIFE Notebook which you can get in ruled, gridded, or blank. Pay attention for the sheet size and number before you purchase them. A4 is approximately the standard American 8.5x11.2 inch sheet. Do you already have your preferred pens and pencils? You can get some good ones with tips as thin as 0.28mm (though I used 0.3mm and 0.5mm).

Edit: why did someone downvote me?

a spiral graphpaper notebook.

This is what I use for everything: https://www.amazon.com/Five-Star-Notebook-Subject-Assorted/dp/B004DRDAVW

u/Axana · 2 pointsr/Retconned

I prefer pen and paper. Writing by hand has always helped me retain more knowledge and memory than typing, and there's actually some science to back this up.

>According to a new study, Pam Mueller and Daniel Oppenheimer of Princeton University and UCLA Los Angeles respectively, students who write out their notes by hand actually learn more than those to type their notes on laptops. Over the course of several experiments, Mueller and Oppenheimer tested students’ memories for factual detail, conceptual comprehension, and synthesizing capabilities after half of them took notes by hands and the other half took notes by way of computer. Students who used laptops cranked out more words than hand-writers did, but the hand-writers ended up with a stronger conceptual understanding across the board.

This, plus I find the tactile feel of the pen moving and creating across the paper to be a deeply satisfying and somewhat spiritual experience.

I use a simple Black n' Red spiral notebook (LOL that Amazon price) because I find it easier to let loose and write down anything that comes to mind. The fancy journals I've purchased in the past always ended up unused because I was too anxious and self-conscious about marking up the pretty pages with thoughts that didn't seem "worth it." If you're going to start journaling on pen and paper, I strongly recommend starting with the simple route. Spend the money on something fancy when you're more comfortable with journaling.

I also strongly recommend ditching ballpoint pens if you're serious about paper journaling. Gel and fountain pens let you get your thoughts out much faster and with less pain. I use a Uni-ball Signo UM-151 and Pilot Metropolitan fountain pen. Again, I don't like to get too fancy with my journaling. It's more important to get the words out than fret over the tools.

As for what to write...write whatever resonates with you no matter how scattered or silly or unformed it may seem. Don't get self-conscious about it. Just get the words out.

I noticed the other day that a 1-subject Mead notebook contains 100 pages, while a 3-subject notebook contained only 150. This means that something I expected to hold 3x as much content only held 1.5x as much, spread thinner. And yet, people on amazon are paying more than twice as much for them.

I like Kokuyo notebook covers. This one is the better model (and cheaper) but I found it a bit too snug for the Crossfield, especially with a 60pp Muji book in it, too. I go to GCC, looking to transfer to UCLA next fall. I study cultural anthropology, and want to get my doctorate eventually. I went back to school at 27 after almost dying in a car wreck and realizing that I needed to do more with my life than be a stripper or bartender forever. I wasn't sure what to study, but after taking anthro 102, I fell in love with the subject. As an interesting aside, it's also how I met my fiance. I started an anthropology club and he joined, the rest is history.

We are super broke right now because I moved to Colorado in a fit of stupidity at the beginning of the summer, we sucked at long distance, and I moved back. Not a cheap mistake, I tell you. So honestly the basics would be a big help.

This is a really amazing contest. Thanks for holding it :)

They are expensive enough that I hesitate to buy it if I will be disappointed.

The closest I have ever found to the book I have is a Black n' Red model on amazon but the missing elastic strap is a deal breaker for me.
