Ok so here is the breakdown of what I am doing and a couple more photos of the UI and videos of it in action.
Here is the
configuration.yaml
andui-lovelace.yaml
files on Github. The main components that are currently being used on the front end are:
I intend for the UI to be displayed on a few Fire HD8 tablets. One that will be centrally located on the main floor of the house. Two others will be used as nightstand clocks in the master bedroom.
At a high level, all I have done is drawn the floor plan and layouts in Sketch and exported individual assets as pngs and position them within a
picture-elements
card mostly utilizingimage
and itsstate_image
. I would basically just plop down the button or icon or whatever withstyle: "top":50% "left":50%
. Once the asset was in the UI I would inspect it via Chrome's dev tools inspector and select the parent container that thestyle
was being set on. I would then manually adjust thetop
andleft
percentages until I was satisfied. I would then updateui-lovelace.yaml
to include the new values and double check them in the browser. For the buttons, currently the button background and button text are baked into the image but I intend to change that soon. Basically the indicator light is actually the same size as the whole button its just 95% of it is transparent.
Here are some screen caps (since i just posted photos from my phone last night)
Here are a couple videos of it in action:
Thats all I can think of for now to answer the basics... I am more than happy to go deeper into anything anyone has any questions about
Not mentioned here; but IMO any camera will put people on notice that there is a camera present. I think my neighbors think I'm a bit on the paranoid side; yet there have been no problems in my neighborhood for some time, and others nearby have had break ins, car burglaries; etc. I also have a back alley; and this keeps people away from the cars and garbage in the rear alley (last Christmas we had a car break in).
I don't however, recommend Ring Cameras; (doorbell is fine; but put another 4-5MP camera out there). Why? Better granularity /clarity in terms of visibility; esp at night. I recommend Reolink for their great night vision.
Imgur (B&W), but color is possible. IR in USE
Argus2: battery powered Color night vision: Imgur
I started with the excellent Reolink Argus 2's because of the exceptional night vision; have moved up to their 5MP dome camera for my rear driveway. I would recommend the Reolink PoE or Wifi (I am using 5ghz wifi with no problems) system. In the front, for appearances sake, I am using the ring doorbell2 with a solar powered (solar array is in a flower pot near the front door) Argus2 higher up. In the back, a Reolink 422W (vandal resistant dome) under the garage door frame. I'm very pleased.
I don't need an NVR; I'm using SD cards and my phone app and Windows client on my PC to run it.
Here is one such buy on Amazon: https://www.amazon.com/Surveillance-Supported-Security-Recording-RLK8-410B4/dp/B01AHXEHSU/ref=sr_1_5?s=photo&ie=UTF8&qid=1543322543&sr=1-5&keywords=Reolink
> One of our neighbors set up a camera on his porch, and says he hasn't been fucked with since. I can't afford to do the same.
> emptied two whole bottles of "fart spray"
Strange that you have plenty of money for "fart spray" but not $20 for a security camera.
How do you just accept that as something that just happens? Get a security camera!
Everyone’s talking about outlets and cloud storage just do what businesses have done for years. Ive installed 5 like systems. Past two homes, mother’s, mother’s neighbor and my neighbor. $150 done and done.

It's alright; it was really cheap when I just wanted to try one out. There are better ones that are actually built into your rear view mirror so it doesn't take up any real estate on your windshield. It records in 3-minute increments and then will overwrite the oldest one (if I don't tag it to save it).
I haven't actually had to produce anything to the police yet for any type of incident, but I have had a few arguments with cabbies where I pointed out I had a dash cam and they stopped yelling and drove off.

They have relatively inexpensive kits on amazon. Though I would look into who has the best products in your price range, these types of kits are common.
If you want to tinker and set up a custom system look into the RaspberryPi. You get to choose your camera equipment and hard drive and everything else is run by the computer (the Pi itself). There are a few people with instructions on how they set theirs up. This video is what got me interested in the Rasberry Pi.
Hope this helps.
For that price range I would probably go with this Reolink set myself.
https://www.amazon.com/Security-4Megapixel-2560x1440-Surveillance-RLK8-410B4/dp/B01AHXEHSU
Or this NVR: https://reolink.com/product/rln8-410/

By far my favorite IFTTT script is for my security camera at the front door of my house. When motion is detected, my camera system shoots out an email with a still image to the IFTTT email address. Basically, my wrists buzzes with a picture of who is at the front door every time someone walks up to my house. Technology is amazing.
FYI - this is the security system I bought off Amazon:
http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B005FM8UL4/ref=as_li_tl?ie=UTF8&camp=1789&creative=390957&linkCode=as2
Bet it was a large flat screwdriver. If you own one, place it right there and see if it doesn't fit. Bet it'll fit like a glove.
Time for a security system:
https://www.amazon.com/EZVIZ-Surveillance-Weatherproof-Customizable-Detection/dp/B015121KH8
Firstrend 4 cam system, with a 1tb hard drive. I I'd give it 4 stars probably. Super easy to set up, does what I need it to, but it's not a very intuitive UI. I also can't find any sort of overwrite settings, I may need to manually format it every few weeks.
https://www.amazon.com/dp/B077HT7P5Q/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_kCjJBbTTFZAZ8
If you're concerned, I'm going to recommend installing these:
Camera 1 OR
Camera 2
These are better than a security system because:
It deters crime in your area, not just someone breaking in.
It's cheaper long term ($300 one-time vs $30 / month).
It's video, so it can serve multiple purposes.
It has a recording log, can watch packages, check on 'if someone arrived' etc...
I got Camera 1 hooked up to my business, $300 + installation which was another $300 (you can get it done cheaper). That linked the Cameras to my phone, so I can watch my business on my phone, track customers, etc, security, packages, and storms.
And I've used my footage to assist crime in the area, and simply knowing that cars coming in and out of my area are being recorded reduces crime in and of itself. Not to mention I got 30 day recording and can expand from 4 to 8 cameras any time. No additional / monthly fees.
It's this kit: https://www.amazon.com/Reolink-Security-Surveillance-2560x1440-RLK8-410B4/dp/B01AHXEHSU
This security system works great for me, easy setup and night vision works perfect. App allows remote monitoring and comes with storage built in.

There is also a 720P version for $140
Good luck with psycho hoa girl.
I would suggest a NVR system. It is all in one. You plug the cameras into the back of the box. You can plug a monitor into the box and see all cameras connected. Don't hook it to the internet so it cannot be hacked.
https://www.amazon.com/Surveillance-Supported-Security-Recording-RLK8-410B4/dp/B01AHXEHSU/ref=sr_1_5?keywords=nvr+reolink&qid=1562792478&s=gateway&sr=8-5
I have two Zmodo DVR's like these, set up. The cams aren't very good, specially at night. I've upgraded most of them with better quality ones. On my android I use IP Cam Viewer which works great to access the DVR. To access it through the web you have to use IE with an activeX plug in. I'm not crazy about that part. I've also installed a Q-See model that had it's own 7-8" monitor. I liked the Zmodo DVR better but the Q-See had better cameras.
Just about any modern DVR is going to have web access. Between the two that I've had experience with I prefer the Zmodo. You can get a stand alone DVR for less then $100. A decent cam similar to these and be up and running. After that it's just adding stuff. A hard drive if you want to record, more cameras, etc.
I've tried IP cams. They're okay. WIth all cams you need power and signal. Standard type cams that you'd use with a Zmodo have one cable that supplies power and signal and must be run back to wherever you have the DVR. IP Cams need a power cable and a network cable. The network cable needs to run to your switch, power can come from anywhere you have AC. There are WiFi cams but I've found that they aren't very good. You still need to run power to them but not a network cable. I've found just ONE cam really slows down my WiFi to everything else. I can't imagine what it would be like with several cams. With my Zmodo I haven't notice and network issues at all.
Currently my Zmodo DVR is in the garage. I have 5 cams attached to it. I've run a network cable, CAT5, to it. I don't have a montior attached to it. I just use my phone or IE for viewing. IP Cam Viewer is also Chromecast compatible so if I want I can see my cams on any of my TV's.
Use Power over Ethernet (PoE) then it's a single cable run. I ended up running cable through my soffet and into the attic for a few cameras, and one I used an existing penetration from an outdoor light.
Plus PoE is digital (uses ethernet instead of RCA), so many benefits over analog (higher resolution, easy upgrades, etc)
E: when I first started researching security cameras it seemed a bit daunting, but PoE makes all the cameras super easy, then it's just finding a NVR (network video recorder) that will work. Reolink has a super easy kit I ended up going with (bought from US Amazon, shipped up here for $450 CAD at the time, now it's $530). I also used a wifi extender
with ethernet port to connect the NVR to my home network so I didn't have to do an in-wall wire run (will do it later, just wanted the cameras up and running). So far so good, Reolink has a pretty solid app and desktop client
If you are limited to Satellite and cellular, you want to avoid cloud-tethered solutions entirely, and look for approaches which can work with purely local networking as much as possible. These will be more expensive, but will avoid data caps and also the latency issues with satellite.
Higher end cameras like Axis Communications can be configured with in-camera motion detection and can send an email with a couple of snapshots when motion is detected, limiting their bandwidth consumption. If Axis/Bosch/Sony is outside your price range, check out TriVision.
Many of the popular "smart house" home automation solutions are also cloud-tethered, and run not just voice recognition but pretty much all controls and actions via an Internet service.
Hey there /r/homesecurity! I'm C5tWm77t5hMJC7m78845, though you can call me C5tWm77t5h for short.
Figured it's time to beef up my home security, partially because all of this is interesting to me and 'why not' and also because I've got expensive hobbies and stuff in my house that I'd like to protect.
I've got a pretty small house, <700 sq/ft in the corner of downtown that isn't the best area of town but... hey, I live in a small town... not much crime here to begin with. But earlier this year I did have my car vandalized (Well, every car on the street got a nice blue stripe of spray paint as someone drove down the road with a passenger spraying cars...) and aside from a neighbor having a can of gas stolen out of the back of his truck... pretty tame area even if it is the 'bad side' of town.
So, security cameras. What are your thoughts on this: http://www.amazon.com/Zmodo-PKD-DK4216-500GB-Internet-Accessible-4-Channel/dp/B005FM8UL4/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1416265580&sr=8-1 ?
I believe this is more than enough for me. What my plans are is simply pointing one east/west out front, which will cover the sidewalk/gate/mailbox/my car on the street. One under my porch overhang facing my front door where I enter/leave and where USPS/UPS/FedEx leaves me packages and one facing the back yard where I very rarely but sometimes park my car.
I live next door to relatives who has cameras on their house, and theirs would hit any blind spots that mine may miss. The two houses combined would provide good security coverage.
What are your thoughts on that camera system? Adequate? I'm not particularly requiring anything fancy since I work from home and AM home 90% of the time. The remote viewing is nice but would rarely be used.
Thanks!
Do some research on PoE (Power over Ethernet) cameras. Basically one wire between a DVR and each camera is all you need for power and video. Here's an example: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B016UCNP3A
I purchased this NVR bundle from Reolink Amazon Link which is decent. The camera housings are study metal and look pretty sleek installed. I mounted my first one on a soffit and drilled a hole to get the cable inside. POE is a HUGE help, didn't have to find separate power.
Only major gripe I have is the motion detection is visual, not thermal, so it constantly gives alerts for random things like a leaf falling. They don't make an IR motion camera with POE that I can find either, so that's a bummer.
I'd say I'm 75% satisfied with the whole system.
FYI, if you get one of these and ever need to reset the password, you have to email customer service to get a helper application, not a big deal unless you set it and forget it.
I'd be interested in what you end up getting!
all you really need is a glo-rod and a drill, nothing to it. get something with POE, something like this should be ok: https://www.amazon.com/Reolink-Security-Megapixel-65-100ft-RLK8-410B4/dp/B016UCNP3A/ref=sr_1_7?s=electronics&ie=UTF8&qid=1486142570&sr=1-7&keywords=reolink
I'd invest in something like this. I used to hang my targets from practice on my back door and windows.
Also, these home survellience systems aren't that expensive, and will at least help you identify anyone that you may not have gotten a clear look at.
Last thing I'd add are some motion-sensitive outdoor lights in the front and the back. The dog is your surest bet of course, it's basically the best notification system for an intruder.
Apologies, I didn't realize that was a requirement. While the Reolink cameras speak ONVIF, the Reolink NVR only works with Reolink cameras. My guess is, their financial model depends on everything being sold as a package.
This is the one I have: https://www.amazon.com/Surveillance-Supported-Security-Recording-RLK8-410B4/dp/B01AHXEHSU
The problem I had with Swann and Lorex was push notification and app UI. I ultimately settled on this EzViz system and I've loved it. It pushes notifications right to my phone, I can monitor all 4 cameras at the same time and the motion detection hasn't been super touchy.
https://www.amazon.com/dp/B015121KH8/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apap_bQtpzmIXmaQMW
Most of the ones I've seen in store are old style analog cameras and not IP cameras. You definitely want IP cameras with PoE. What is your budget? I have this system from Amazon and am quite happy with it.
https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01AHXEHSU/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_8wVOBb6WQFYCB
I was going to recommend Reolink cameras. I have a few of them and they are great. No clue how their NVR's perform though.
I'd suggest spending the little extra to get the 5mp cameras in the kit though. The extra resolution is nice if you ever have to digitally zoom in the recorded footage. https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07H4CGTKQ
Next up from there is getting the individual cameras and setting up a small computer with software to do the recording. I run Milextone Xprotect Essentials, but I don't really like it. It fees like overkill for a home environment and takes time to maintain (windows needs updates, software needs updates and license renewals, ect...).
Buying local for something like this is dumb if you are on a budget. You will get raped on prices and selection. Amazon is your friend.
The guy that suggested android phones is out of his element. How are you going to mount the phone securely? You going to have an array of 2-4 android phones? Get something like this if you are on a budget:
http://www.amazon.com/Zmodo-PKD-DK4216-500GB-Internet-Accessible-4-Channel/dp/B005FM8UL4/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1420300986&sr=8-1&keywords=wireless+camera+system
I have set up a few home and home-office solutions with ZModo. It is shitty software, but you get a full recording rig for 200 bucks.
As someone else stated you probably will not identify them. I sense you are on a budget. How about something like this? I have set this and similar up for a few people too. Works alright. Once an alarm starts squelching most thieves kick it quickly. http://www.amazon.com/GE-Personal-Security-Alarm-Kit/dp/B00032AVN6/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1420301364&sr=8-1&keywords=ge+home+alarm
You don't have enough to prove anything. You might want to snag something like this. Yeah, it's some money, but it'll validate what is going on.
More generally, your state has a Handbook, according to that handbook:
>Generally, a landlord may only enter a tenant’s unit for a “reasonable business purpose” after making an effort to give the tenant reasonable notice. (57) If a landlord violates this law, the tenant can take the landlord to court to break the lease, recover the damage deposit, and receive a civil penalty of up to $100 per violation. (58)
and
> If a landlord enters without giving prior notice and the tenant is not present, the landlord must give written notice to the tenant. (72) If the landlord violates this law, the tenant may recover up to $100 per violation in court. (73)
Set up a camera thing. If you catch your landlord in your space then I would get a lawyer to sue to break lease and move elsewhere as soon as possible. That's creepy as hell, but your State says it's not OK. You just need to have the proof. Once you do, get out.
Actually, I'm thinking of doing something similar to this. Except have them on motion detect and just let them record.
Edit: I have a setup for regular security and was less than 200 bucks. But this here is good. I will see if I can face a camera up and see what the quality looks like at night.

I might take it apart and change the drive over to a 4TB drive too, not sure. Paid for 1 day shipping too! Arriving tomorrow.
This camera has a swivel lens. So I put aside the giant suction cup mount (similar to GPS mounts) and instead used some double sided tape, a 1/4" plastic wedge, and velcro to mount the camera almost flush with the window. Most people don't notice it and those that do assume it's radar or gps.
view from the front
I stuffed the wire along the top of the window seal and ran it to a switched 12v source inside the dash. Those lights you see in the amazon link stick out really badly so I colored over them with a dry erase marker. They also don't tell you that they randomly ship the SD or MicroSD versions without warning.
I took that photo some time ago and will grab an interior shot when it's light out again.
Is Q-See a well-known brand in the security system world? I don't know if Amazon ratings mean anything but this one is the same price but is better rated with more reviews.
I use a HD camera with motion detection, text picture alerts, built in DVR, and full internet accessibility. Had mine for two years:
https://www.amazon.com/Sharx-Security-SCNC3905-Definition-Weatherproof/dp/B00IAZ3R0C
Either of those will need a power cable run to each camera. The longer the power runs are, the more you should go with the 2nd option. It is surprising how long and how much a hassle pulling the cables can be. Do you have access via an attic to the eaves?
I tend to agree, that if possible you should look at returning this and going with a wired POE based camera system. You pull just as much wire and the camera quality will be better. Take a look at https://www.amazon.com/Reolink-Security-Outdoor-Recording-RLK8-420D4-5MP/dp/B07H3QVZQ2/ref=sr_1_6?crid=2SJ6SEFO9OAC6&keywords=poe+camera+system+8+camera&qid=1565984227&s=electronics&sprefix=POE+camera+system%2Celectronics%2C188&sr=1-6
There are a variety of options:
All of these solutions require internet service for remote alerts/monitoring. Some require subscriptions for online access.
Most products that have remote access either require you to run your own webserver or subscribe to the vendor's service.
In order to get a text message out you'll need to find a product that has a cellular modem built in. All of the products I know of that have this are very, very, expensive. (or come from Indian/Chinese dealers with no support and a 30 day shipping time)
An alternative, if you are technically inclined is to add a 3G/4G dongle to a Raspberry Pi, but I don't know of any products that integrate the wireless functionality with any security/camera applications automatically.
Here's a guy who hacked together a system using a raspberry pi and a 3G dongle: http://projectsmax246.blogspot.com/2013/01/webcam-over-3g-with-raspberry-pi.html
That solution is (relatively) cheap, but definitely DIY and NOT easy...
Here's an arduino+motion sensor project that is even more DIY and not easy: https://github.com/mattwilliamson/arduino-sms-alarm
Ideally you would want the 4k offering for future proofing
https://www.amazon.com/Amcrest-Security-Recorder-Smartphone-AMDV8M8-H5/dp/B07HPB7D9F
Budget is somewhere in the range of $200-300. If I need to spend a little more, for something I can use with upgraded cameras down the road, that's fine too. I have a spare PC monitor I can use also
Edit: /u/protogenxl suggested this one;
https://www.amazon.com/Amcrest-Security-Recorder-Smartphone-AMDV8M8-H5/dp/B07HPB7D9F
If not, try this https://www.amazon.com/dp/B015121KH8/ (the only thing you need in an Amazon link is /dp/ and the string starting with B, the rest is link/referrer tracking)
I put something like this on the outside of my house. Clearly, you'd want at least half on the inside....
ZOSI 720p HD-TVI Home Security Camera System Full HD, 8 Channel CCTV Dvr Recorder and (8) HD 1.0MP 1280TVL Surveillance Cameras Outdoor/Indoor with Night Vision, Motion Detection (No Hard Drive) https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01KHIMUQQ/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_EW43BbC3GZWNF
You may also take ANNKE as a selection: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00ZW63ESC
Wireless 1080p (or 720p) is flakey with multiple feeds if you live in a well populated area. Unless you are renting your home just wire it. If you are lazy buy power-line ethernet repeaters. I would recommend a PoE router and PoE cameras. Really easy to run because you only need one wire. I would NOT recommend putting security software recording on a computer that is likely to be stolen. Get cameras with a microSD slot for recording and one centralized NVR (network video recorder) that can be hidden. [edit] If you want a turn-key solution check this out: https://www.amazon.com/EZVIZ-Security-Weatherproof-Cameras-Channel/dp/B015121KH8 I own it (it's my third security system I've bought over 6 years) and it is the best quality per dollar.
I was interested in this product as well. I did not buy it though. The reason I didn't isn't because of reviews or price. It was convenience. I bought an Annke system off Amazon. The reviews were more positive than negative, but it's a 1080p Lite 4 cam 8 channel system, wired. I couldn't really be more pleased. Out the door with the system, a 1tb hdd and 4-100' cables was just under 200(i didnt need the cables as the system included 4-100s).
My advice to you is do it. Obviously locks and surveillance only keep honest people out or criminals second guessing the risk/reward value but I love having a security surveillance system. I've heard good things about the night owl though. Sure it's not Arlo or whatever but my system works fine for what I need, is upgradable for the future. Here is what I got
I've bought and installed cameras for my properties at a cost of ~$500 each property. Its a great investment and provide a better sense of security for the tenants as well, it can record 24/7 for up to 3 weeks (higher if you get more storage space).
I would view the recording when a tenant complaint about something like illegal dumping, car window broken and such. With a big posted sign and cameras in place, there seem to be less illegal activities.

Nothing fancy, 1 or 2mp cameras is all you need, also I purchased a security box to secure the recorder.

I don't have much experience with home dvr kits as I set up commercial ones which had Windows installed, but it looks like this one just needs an internet connection to stream.
I would suggest against wireless because you still need a wire for power so they are never completely wireless. But if you are insistent, yes she can get a system but she would need a Wi-Fi router. Wireless doesn't make sense in most situations, and especially in hers.
Instead I would suggest something like this (maybe look for better quality cameras) which will give you/her a better picture with out the lag. Then buy a hard drive and a monitor and she will be able to use the system to record and view. Obviously she will not be able to view cameras away from her home.
It's pretty fuckin cheap, I'm gonna get one for funzies
I've got a set of ReoLink cameras. They're pretty easy to work with, and they're relatively cheap. My 4-camera system only ran me $400. They're not top-of-the-line, but as you can see, they get the job done. https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07H3QVZQ2
Sounds like a standard security camera setup to me.
Quick shot on amazon reveals this.
Put up security cameras, I got some of these they work great and the price is right. Once installed, play nice, and let your neighbour act like the asshole, once you gather enough evidence go to the cops. Hopefully you can get a restraining order. At this point if he brings up the knife incident it's your word against his, and his credibility with cops will be in the shitter once you show them video proof of his harassment. The most important thing is to PLAY NICE.
I'm starting to add cameras around my house as well. Purchased this set for $440 during a Christmas sale. They were the only 1440p IP cameras I could find under budget. I just have to run network cables around my house to set them up, which will be the biggest pain of the project.
I initially purchased an analog system, like the one you posted, but returned it back to costco. If I'm going to run cables around my house (the biggest pain of the project), I might as well do it with the newer technology.

You’ve been very helpful. There’s so many cameras I didn’t even know where to begin. Looks like this link is a good place to start and get me up and running.
Hey Dexosaurus,
I followed you here after creeping from the michael porter comments. Anywho, I got a friend who bought this security camera that came with 4 cameras (upgradeable to 16). He did a lot of research and this was the product that was low-medium price point but highest value/cost ratio (hopefully that makes sense).
It has a HD that records on movement, and has a web interface so you can view everything either on the LAN or even at home if you set it up right. I'm not sure if this is the exact brand but it looks very similar and I think a lot of companies are rebranding one manufacturer's products. These are wired however, but the cables are really really long. We threaded them through the drop ceiling easily. Also the infrared nightvision is really impressive. It automatically turns on the infrared LEDS when it detects the room is dark

Hi there. Electrical question here.
I'm interested in installing these 4 security cameras around my newly bought home: here. Each camera takes 120 volts.
Basically the old owner had installed a shitload of motion sensor floodlights around the home (which I want to get rid of). Would it be possible to install these cameras over the old light fixtures? How could this be done?

I bought this system for my husband for Father's Day, and have been pleasantly surprised with how nice they are considering the price.
$240
I haven't tried it yet. Seems to have good reviews though. They're probably not the best, but they might be the best bang for buck.
Decent security cameras don't cost thousands of dollars anymore. This mid-range system costs a little
ofover $200 and the picture is pretty clear if you look at the customer images. The police seem like they are doing their job just fine, they are interviewing the neighborhood and the kids they did find, you can't just arrest people just on someones word.
I found some 4 camera systems at $200, but not with audio. The cheapest 4 camera system I found with audio was Reolink on Amazon.
https://www.amazon.com/Surveillance-Supported-Security-Recording-RLK8-410B4/dp/B01AHXEHSU/ref=sr_1_16?keywords=camera+security+system+with+audio&qid=1564306878&s=gateway&sr=8-16
So one like this is no good? Asking for a friend, haha. Have a blind spot on one side of house I'd like to put one in, got power and good wifi. But know next to nothing about these items. Thanks for any input
What about this system? $460 all in for the NVR and 4 cameras https://www.amazon.com/dp/B077SYSQFQ/?coliid=I10V4A4RNQKZ9L&colid=O20M7SWXTZIS&psc=0&ref_=lv_ov_lig_dp_it
I bought this nonbranded camera system and really enjoy it. Sorry I can't offer feedback on the system but maybe just the knowledge that someone else has an off brand that worked will be enough for you. It's been running for 1 year now.
As a side note i got the Ezviz because it offers IFTTT support so i can create a script to turn on motion alerts when my house is empty.

gotcha, thanks. mind if I ask you two more questions? With something like this kit - https://www.amazon.com/Reolink-Surveillance-5-Megapixel-Security-RLK8-410B4-5MP/dp/B016UCNP3A?crid=1D6PWD41XJY2W&keywords=security+camera+poe+5mp&qid=1539137191&sprefix=security+camera+poe+%2Caps%2C223&sr=8-4&ref=sr_1_4
if something went wrong with a single camera can you replace it with any other individually sold POE camera like say https://www.amazon.com/Security-Megapixels-2592x1944-Waterproof-Detection/dp/B07BNGWZVR?crid=1D6PWD41XJY2W&keywords=security+camera+poe+5mp&qid=1539137191&sprefix=security+camera+poe+%2Caps%2C223&sr=8-7&ref=sr_1_7 ?
and if I were to buy just 2 or 3 of the second linked individual cameras, would they work with https://www.amazon.com/TIGERSECU-4-Channel-Security-Recording-Included/dp/B076H2DHBS?keywords=security%2Bcamera%2Bdvr&qid=1539137634&sr=8-8&ref=sr_1_8&th=1 ?
thanks
Gonna be pretty hard to get quality cameras with only $500. Yes, IP cams still record locally to a NVR, analog cameras record to a DVR. Analog is so limited, I could not recommend buying any. IP cams have the quality and clarity you seek. I would look into Reolink IP cameras, which can be purchased on Amazon, something like this.
Here it is: https://www.amazon.com/xmartO-WVS1044-Wireless-Weatherproof-Auto-Pair/dp/B01CFXBP08/ref=sr_1_22?ie=UTF8&qid=1497464829&sr=8-22&keywords=xmarto
All of the "pre-packaged" sets are made in China from Chinese manufacturers. Example here.
If you're ambitious, you could build a small PC with BlueIris (a IP camera software) and just buy the cameras individually and have BlueIris record them. You'd already have a POE switch which can do the power - all you'd need is the NVR.
I am using this one: https://www.amazon.com/Reolink-Business-Security-Waterproof-RLK8-410B4/dp/B01AHXEHSU/ Really good for my house.
I am using the Reolink camera for my own house and love it. And I add one for my parents' house on the Amazon Prime Day. Given you budget and requirement, you can try this security system out https://www.amazon.com/Reolink-Security-Channel-Outdoor-RLK8-410B4/dp/B01AHXEHSU/ref=sr_1_4?m=A15NUCR7ITLOD6&s=merchant-items&ie=UTF8&qid=1499940771&sr=1-4. Not sure it still has discounts. Hope it can help you!
I have the Sharx ip cam. It's pretty sweet.

musicianspro insurance. The base premium is $150 a year but it covers about $15,000 worth of gear at that level. I've been using them for a few years and have already had to cover a loss (tele fell out of the trailer while touring) and it was a breeze. If you have renter's insurance for your apartment they won't cover gear unless it's on a specific rider and my renter's insurance rider cost would have been higher than the cost of the specific gear insurance, plus a much higher deductible.
I keep all my serial numbers listed on my computer, on an online server and in a small fire safe in my apartment. A good tip is to place a business card or piece of paper with your name and address inside the guitar somewhere like under the pickguard, and somewhere for amps.
Aside from that, lock your doors, don't leave stuff in a car over night, and if you're really worried about break-ins get a cheap DVR camera system.
I was given a similar system to this. It works really well and is expandable if needed. $150 gets you a DVR, and some cameras.

What I would do is download something like iSpy (open source video surveillance program) buy my cameras (I prefer IP cameras ran over PoE ethernet cabling), buy my cabling, and buy a PoE switch with however many ports you need based on how many cameras you plan on installing...

I searched 'wired security camera' in amazon. that one is wired to a dvr/tv. cheap cheap. score!
Hi, I am one of the owners of "The Other Tales" escape room in NJ (http://www.theothertales.com). Here are some basics.
We use a wired system, similar to this one: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00ZW63ESC ($95 as of now). It has 4 cameras - enough for 1 or 2 room setup. For microphones, you can use something like this one: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B002S4G870/. I would also recommend adding HDD to the monitoring, so you can record some games. You can get one for $50 on Amazon. So, in total, the price for the monitoring system will be under $200.
Another question is, how you are going to communicate with the players? But that very much depends on the room design and tech. It can be anything - speakers, walkie-talkies, monitors that show typed texts or something as low-tech as paper notes.
Got it, thank you!
I started googling Reolink after your mention and found this link. Reolink has way more mentions than Qsee online so I'm thinking about going with that instead.

I'm concerned about security with remote streaming. If you check out the first review here you'll see somebody mentioned it: https://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/cr/B01AHXEHSU/
This person mentioned a concern also: https://reolink.com/topic/issues-that-reolink-has-not-resolved/#post-26468
Other than that it is really looking good.
What have your clients said about the system? Any complaints?
