This is the one I got. I wanted the Nest, but didn't want to spend that kind of money. Settled on this one, and I've been pretty happy with it. The app is pretty solid, and has a lot of features. [edit] I forgot to mention it has an intercom on it too. I talk to my cats and dog with it while I'm at work.

These, and small cameras alike, have given me near existential anxiety ever since they hit the market a while ago.

How many screws have I encountered over the years were actually cameras? Is my life some Truman Show shit?

Fake security signs dont hurt, but they arent terribly helpful either.

"Mail"? Where we're going, we don't need mail...

Old item, next hotness:

Amazon will offer to come over and install it into your house when you're not there.

For a really good DIY setup that is WAY better than anything you can get from the plug and play cameras (like Ring etc. which require stupid subscriptions):

- SV3C cameras from Amazon ($36/each): https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0777PNBY4/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_search_asin_title?ie=UTF8&psc=1

- An NVR (also available via Amazon), or a reasonable fast dedicated PC/laptop running "Blue Iris" software

Been running 3 of these for over a year, really high resolution and rock solid reliability.

Whatever you choose, go hard-wired ethernet rather than wireless. Wireless is unreliable because it's prone to interruptions in connectivity.

I picked this doorbell up as an alternative to SkyBell. Not sure if you are interested in taking a look:

https://www.amazon.com/LaView-Doorbell-Two-Way-Weatherproof-Security/dp/B07LFP9C9C

Pros: Local SD card storage, clear hi-def pictures, cloud optional, can rtsp and oniv to whatever you want (I have mine on continuous recording through MotionEye), camera shows up in HA no problem as a generic ffmpeg camera, comes with everything you need for install including transformer and different faceplates.

Cons: phone app is a little glitchy, but not terrible, Motion sensor has a lot of false positives at night even on the lowest sensitivity but that might be because I live on a busy street (you can turn them off), People often push the wrong circle trying to push the doorbell (I saw one person first push the camera, then the PIR sensor, then finally the chime.

EDIT: After having seen your Skybell image, the one I linked also comes with an angler to avoid having the wall take up 1/3 of your photo.

I have 3 security cameras, a wireless RING 2 video doorbell, which I highly recommend, as soon as someone is close to your door it records them and you get a notification on your phone and can view and speak with them in real time via 2-way speaker, there is a cost of $2.50 per month for their cloud service, outside in the back yard I have a BLINK XT2, this is a great camera because it's wireless, runs on batteries and has a lot of versatility, also sends instant notifications as soon as someone is detected, the newest version has a 2 way speaker, there is no charge for their cloud service. Lastly inside my house I have the Amazon Cloud Cam, no charge for cloud storage, 2 way speaker and instant notifications as well. All 3 of these camera's are great.

I picked up a wifi enabled one from Amazon for $99, they're not all that expensive.

Edit: This is the one I have.

Get this amazon branded security camera; it records any movement and notifies you real-time while movement occurs. Even if they were to steal your camera, footage is automatically uploaded to the cloud immediately. There are no required monthly fees.

You can get a $11 keychain camera that could do this far more discretely than Google Glass. If someone was going to take my trade secrets, I wouldn't worry about someone who has a camera strapped to the side of their head.

u/MrGizthewiz · 5 pointsr/predaddit

For a video monitor, I got a cheap-ass security camera that I can access from my phone. Haven't tried i with the baby, because she is still sleeping in our room, but the night vision can clearly see someone walking through the door with no lights available anywhere. It also has audio and talkback. I don't trust WiFi, so the LAN cable access was a huge plus.

u/quarl0w · 5 pointsr/homeautomation

If it's just a stop gap until you go PoE or whatever your future plans are, I have an unconventional and cheap temporary solution.

I could not find a doorbell that fit your criteria when I started my search a year ago. At least not until I win the lottery.

Closest I could find was a outdoor camera. I bought this one: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01CW49AGG/

It uses a microSD card to store the video locally on the camera. They have an optional cloud service that I haven't tried. I get about a month of motion triggered video on a 32GB card. The alerts work to let me know when someone is at my door. The two way audio isn't amazing, but it's good enough.

I've had two of their indoor cameras for a year before getting the outdoor one. Never had any issues with any of them.

They basically take the Nest hardware, add a SD slot, and subtract half to 3/4 the price.

I will say that my brother has a Ring Doorbell 2. The Yi cam has better video quality, comporable sound quality, more reliable alerts, cost less, and doesn't need a subscription. Only downside is that it it needs power instead of running on existing wiring.

u/askwhy423 · 5 pointsr/BabyBumps

This is the one we bought. As long as you set your WiFi passwords to something secure, and make the password on the camera secure also it won't be a problem. People don't just drive around spending their time "hacking" into baby monitors. It's when settings are left default or unsecured that it's easy to mess with people.

You can pick up a cheap network cam for about $200. A pi and webcam with enclosures and shipping would cost you about the same. The advantage is that network cam is specialize and has nifty mounts. The pi-cam is completely customizable. I comes down to what you want.

EDIT: I seem to have set off a crap storm here. Here were I get the cost:

  • Pi + Shipping = $42
  • Power Supply + Shipping = $13
  • Compatible Memory Card + Shipping = $15
  • High Res Webcam + Shipping $52
  • Camera Case + Shipping - $22
  • Wires and accessories - $10

Total Price: $154 for hardware that can only do about 6 frames / second at full resolution. The advantage of the PI is that you can customize it anyway you want. The disadvantage is it's very under powered. I have heard that Beagle Bone Black's can get up to 25 fps with a similar setup (under best conditions).

I was thinking of an IP camera like this one, or maybe a step up.

A couple of these around the house might scare them away

u/la_fortezza · 4 pointsr/longrange

I've built something similar using point-to-point Wifi gear. It kinda sucks having to align to line up two antennae but you get much better range.

I am using Ubiquiti Networks (http://www.ubnt.com/) equipment used in
long haul Wireless ISPs. This equipment is inexpensive and uses
standard technology: Power-Over-Ethernet (POE), Wifi, so it's easy to tweak.

I'm using a 9 amp-hour battery and current draw is ~0.6 amps so that
comes out 10 hours or so. It would be trivial to tack on a Solar panel
or bigger battery. The charge controller takes POE as an input so it's
easy to recharge the battery.

Here are a couple pics:

Yi Outdoor camera for $120 from Amazon. It's 1080p and records to micro SD card. Notifies you when it senses movement, and doesn't require a paid subscription. You can sign up for a subscription, but it works totally fine without it. Has infrared LEDs for night vision. https://www.amazon.ca/YI-Security-Wireless-Waterproof-Surveillance/dp/B01CW49AGG/ref=sr_1_7?ie=UTF8&qid=1521083704&sr=8-7&keywords=yi+camera

I installed it overlooking the driveway, and tucked the power cable to the edge of the garage door. The facade of my garage is all thick ass brick, and I'm not about to try to drill through it. The cable is only about 10 feet long, but you can extend it with a USB extender, which is what I had to do to reach the power outlet inside the garage. I've shown family members my camera, and they all want one now.

I have this Pre-Amp, the TCC-750LC. It sounds great and has served me well connected to my Pioneer VSX-1020-K.

I'd absolutely recommend this.

u/itstext · 4 pointsr/AmIFreeToGo

I can personally speak for this device. I purchased it a long time ago and I returned it the next day. First of all, it's got a red blinking light in the front. Second, it's larger than a standard bluetooth, and the lens is obvious. Some of them require your android phone for its storage, with its bluetooth abilities draining the battery even more. It is not meant for covert recording. Covert recording is illegal in some states, and so manufactures are less willing to supply the public with these devices.

However, not to be outdone, I went to making my own covert recording device. I purchased many different types of cameras that you can wear on your body, even button-hole cameras. Nothing worked (AND was covert). Wasted a lot of money on shipping. And in the end, I finally came up with an inexpensive idea that works better than any device I found for sale. Plus, I got to make it...which is just more fun.

I purchased this black hat, and one of these cheap, car alarm keychain cameras and this strap of elastic. I then sewed (with a heavy duty needle) the elastic band to the underside of my hat bill. Get it perfectly centered the best you can, try to keep it toward the back of the bill obviously, and just large enough for the device to sit snug inside. Now I can activate the camera and slide it into the elastic band. It is small enough, and matching color, that it's not easily seen. It's not completely invisible, but I'd say its visibility has gone down 90% conservatively. You MIGHT see a lump, but you would never know that it's a camera. But with that device, I can record for 2 hours on an 8GB card. Charges via USB, and its low light ability isn't really all that bad (not for $10 anyway). Plus, it takes pictures.

And since it's on my hat bill, it sees what I see. You just have to get used to wearing and point it accurately at the target.

All this for about $20, and since the parts are so cheap, if it's stolen by some corrupt cop, I can get another one easily. I don't have to worry about them smashing my $600 camera, or stealing my phone that I really need.

The downside is if they find and take the camera, there's no way to get the video back unless they give it back to me. No internet file backup abilities.

Hope this helps,
Dallas

I got a $30 IP camera and use it for exactly this. Anyone can access it from their phone/tablet/computer with the camera ID and password. If you want it on a bigger display, you can just plug a laptop/tablet into a TV and set it up.

The video quality is fantastic, the audio from the camera to you is great, the quality of the "speaking through the phone to the camera" is kinda meh. It doesn't sound like you're necessarily looking for that though, so this should work well for your use case. The wide angle is great, I can see my entire room from the camera on the edge of my nightstand.

I've had to force stop the app for it a couple times but it's worked as soon as I rebooted it. I'm very happy with it for the price.

They make cameras small enough to fit in a screw. They make cameras that can fly (drones.) They make camera lenses so big that you can be miles away, and it looks like the photos was taken 5 feet away. Screen capture, keystroke loggers, spyware, microphones, etc. If someone wants to spy on you, they'll find a way.

Is that really just a router? Well unless you open it up to look for a camera or mic, you'll never know. Unless there's some reason for them to spy on you instead not the person at the desk next to you, it's not probably not there to spy on you.

u/puhlswimmer · 3 pointsr/SaltLakeCity

Honesty, this has been irritating me sooooo bad!! I have my own IP camera at home and I made it a point to make sure the quality wasn't straight up garbage.

This is what I got for my home and the quality isn't perfect, but it's a huge improvement over what I typically see on TV on the news. I can actually see what's going on. I can identify the person on video. Why waste money on a piece of S**t camera that does you no good?

If the purpose is for deterrence, then I say just get a fake camera... omg I could rant forever on this subject.

I used to be a security guard, having to figure out what happened when the video quality looks like it came out of the 1920's... Just makes me wanna cry.

I've started to work towards that as well. I just added a Dahua PoE camera on my porch with audio but I still want the motion+button+intercom features of a doorbell as well.

u/CupOfGamma · 2 pointsr/homesecurity

Depending on which state you're in, I'd say go through a Honeywell retailer and pick up a wireless Lyric system to handle the door/window contacts, glass break sensor, siren, and Yale electronic lock. You can put your indoor cameras on the Honeywell app as well.

I've had a positive experience with Honeywell since the wireless set-up process is simple, and the retailer's customer support should help you out should you have any tech issues or need guidance with the app. Makes it real easy to teach family members to use the apps, even people who are really bad with computers. Plus, whenever you move, it's no big deal. Just toss everything back in the box and install it in the next place.

With monitoring, your retailer or security system supplier might have someone they work with. Main thing to look for is that they're UL-listed and meet all the industry standards. Find out if they protect locations like schools and government buildings, too. That's always a good sign. I don't have any specific monitoring companies I can plug, unfortunately.

My only issue with Honeywell is their new wireless outdoor cameras are untested, so until I get my hands on one and put it through it's paces, I'm not going to recommend it.

I prefer wired exterior lights myself, but if you can also get battery-powered like this one on Amazon for cheap. With lights, there's really no need to get fancy unless you've got a lot of area to cover and you plan on being there on a more permanent basis.

For outdoor cameras you can get something like Amcrest's outdoor option. Decent camera, ticks all the boxes, not too expensive. Put your cameras on BlueIris or iSpy.

Hopefully that gives you a good starting point. Since your home is small, you probably don't need many cameras so that'll help mitigate some costs.

It's tough finding the balance between a cheap security system and a reliable one, but I think the added peace of mind makes it a worthy investment.

Anyone happen to have an opinion on my current preamp vs the ART one?

u/svibs · 2 pointsr/homeautomation

I was looking for something similar. My requirements were as follows:

Powered by doorbell transformer (16-24VAC) not batteries
Small footprint (width <= 2" wide)
Wifi
No cloud dependency
Unobtrusive, doesn't look ridiculous (subjective)
Doesn't cost a fortune ($200 or less)

I found this one and am very happy with it. From what I've been able to find for info it appears to be an OEM version of a Hikvision NDB313-W and is very similar to the LaView Halo One and the RCA Video Doorbell versions but without the associated branding and reliance on their branded apps. It costs $140 shipped and uses a micro SD card (16GB card included) for local storage. As a bonus and though undocumented, it appears to be ONVIF compliant and I was able to add it to my Amcrest NVR as an ONVIF camera and am recording video 24/7. I've only had it installed for a week or so and installation was simple. It uses the EzViz app, which while a bit clunky is very workable.

I initially had issues getting my indoor mechanical chime working with it but the issue turned out to be existing transformer was too underpowered (10 volt 5 VA) to pull in the chime's solenoid. I replaced it with a 24V 40VA transformer and all has been fine since. Nelly's Security tech support was very responsive and helpful and my only complaint with the doorbell is that it plays a "ding dong" sound from its' internal speaker when the doorbell button is pressed. Nelly's is looking in to the issue it pretty sure it can be disabled.

As far as your particular use case goes you obviously won't get the "someone is ringing your door bell" notifications if you're away from home and the doorbell might not have internet access. But it will record motion events on its' internal micro SD card and you should be able to view them using the EzViz app when you're connected to your local network. And if you have an ONVIF compliant NVR you should be able to record the video from the doorbell cam.

I'm in mid Alberta (Canada) a few hours from the mountains. Have you ever seen any of those videos where someone throws some boiling water up in the air and it instantly turns into powdered snow? We can do that here when it gets cold. Hurts to breathe when it's that cold too. After I posted here, I found out that I'm better off finding an IP677 rating, but word of mouth from other people who have similar temperature drops is still usually the best way to find something that will work. Some units create more heat or have more insulation around the battery to keep it warmer so it will still function without issues. I even came across a site that had a graph from Energizer that showed how much depletion a battery goes through as temperatures get colder. Makes me think that a wired version would be better. I know that my phone gets slower when I'm out in the cold.

I have found a few options that I'm considering, but still not sure about which one would be best.

This one or some variant by Amcrest

Something by Arlo (heard of someone else who has it and has had no problems)

This one by Genbolt (says it can work to -50F)

Either the price is a bit high or the ratings cause some doubts.

If you don't want to spend a lot, these Yi cameras are an amazing value and work really well. No cloud subscription is required (though it is an a available option), data can be stored locally on an SD card, and live and past footage can be pulled up at any time from the app. I have setup many of these over the past 2 years. Essentially a Nest Cam at 1/6 the cost. I continue to be pleasantly surprised by how well they work.

They also make an outdoor version that I have been meaning to try as well.

Thank you for the clarification but your still not being specific. Anytime you are dealing with a dome cam, especially outdoors, you will always have IR feedback off of the dome itself. Alot of people will use a turret or eyeball cam instead of dome while still getting the same form factor and you will not get any IR feedback at all. You still are not clear on what type of application this will be placed on but I will assume its residential and I will assume your able to place a cam under a eve of the home. Most people who are using Dahuas love the starlight cams and the most reasonable is IPC-HDW5231R-ZE 2MP. Once again I dont know what setting the camera will be in or if you even have the need for a starlight cam but this vendor is the best for any Dahua product.

If you are comfortable doing a little tinkering I'd recommend checking out your local Craigslist (or eBay). Any used turntable you get would benefit from, or require, a new needle and/or cartridge. On the lowest end you'd want to go it'll be around $30. If it's belt-driven it may also need a new belt depending on how old or abused it was. Those are only about $10-20 so it's not a huge investment if needed. I'd even recommend just getting a new one anyway.

Craigslist would be a good place to get a receiver as well. Check out all of the inputs and outputs if you can, there's a lot that can go wrong and you wouldn't want to be left with a receiver that only has three working speaker outputs. Another option is an integrated amplifier. If you really don't want to go used there's this on Amazon: http://www.amazon.com/A1-2x14W-Class-D-Digital-Amplifier/dp/B004FSXON8/ref=sr_1_22?s=electronics&ie=UTF8&qid=1382558045&sr=1-22&keywords=integrated+amplifier[1] It seems to get decent reviews and would be great if space is a concern.

If your turntable and receiver don't have an internal preamp or phono out you'll need an external one. My old receiver died and my new one didn't have a phono out so I recently bought this one to hold me over for a few years: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000A36XZS/ref=oh_details_o00_s00_i00?ie=UTF8&psc=1[2] I really recommend it and you wouldn't want to get one that was any cheaper than that.

Buying new, the you can't really beat the two links above as far as price and size go. You'll be able to buy something better used if you are willing to do some digging and risk the potential of it being secretly abused if the seller is sketchy.

There is also an 808 keychain that you could by an lens extension and make your own pendant so the camera is on the top of the pendant/front center rather than on the side.

I think having something wireless is much better but as long as its hidden and you're sure that LEO's won't get to it, then I think you're fine. But if that one you showed could somehow stream instantly via your phone in your pocket, that would be killer. I think you can download, but not stream live to a cloud without getting your phone out and requesting it. Not sure if I made sense. But do you have any idea why it was suspended??

I would highly recommend this camera from this seller if the area is ever somewhat dark. It has the starlight sensor that is one of the very best for low light conditions. I use these with BI and they work great. if it’s always well lit, you can go with a higher resolution camera and not worry about the starlight sensor like this one. Both of these cameras have adjustable focal length - meaning you can set them wider or narrower depending on the area you want to cover. Ipcamtalk.com forums are very helpful also - they have a BlueIris machine guide showing what older PC’s to look for on ebay that will run BI fine.

If you're planning to throw away your old cameras anyway, you could try these instructions and see if they happen to work for you.

You can easily use your existing CAT5 to power any regular non-PoE camera by attaching a PoE injector at one end to power the cable, and a PoE spitter at the other end to recover the DC power and supply it to a regular non-PoE camera. A kit like this one should do the job.

You might also be able to find some cameras that will allow you to power via PoE while simultaneously allowing you to connect via WiFi. (More commonly it's either/or.) In that case you'll need just the PoE injector, and plug the cable directly into the camera on the camera side. I know several Amcrest models such as this one will stay connected on both PoE and wifi when the PoE connector is plugged in, so I assume that you could buy a PoE camera, use the CAT5 to power it, and use WiFi for network. (Disclaimer -- I haven't specifically tested using the PoE for power only rather than power+network ... I just think it's likely that it will work.)

(Edit: Oops ... The Amcrest camera I linked to is not a PoE camera, but it does stay connected simultaneously to wired and WiFi networks. So, I might be wrong in thinking you can find a PoE camera that will also support WiFi while using the PoE jack for power -- but you should definitely be able to buy a camera like the one I linked to and power it by using the inject+splitter route.)

$3895 is a lot too much.

I would go with the 2MP Starlights. These (x6 = 1061.94) are what I would recommend. The seller is extremely reputable, and I've bought a significant amount from him over the years.

I would go with this NVR, with a large WD Purple hard drive. $500-520 Go with the 16 channel, as you can always add more cameras, and not need to get a new NVR.

You can get a 8 Port POE switch for around $160.

I'd go with a bigger screen, 32" minimum.

Thank you for your response!

As far as re-capping the speakers, I am confident re-capping them would be pretty cheap, however I do not know if it worth it, as the drivers and design of the speakers may not be very good to begin with. I have played a lot with the placement of the speakers, however the way my room is, the only possible location for them is pushed into the corners (I know, worst placement), due to their size. Part of the reason I am looking at these smaller studio monitors and bookshelf speakers is because I will have greater freedom to move them around.

I would love to piece together my set up with used vintage equipment, but I live in a smallish college town where craigslist and thrift stores are flooded with shitty iphone docks and black plastic crap.

As far as the turntable goes, I am pretty happy with my set-up. I have a debut carbon with a separate mini phono preamp (I know it's not the best, If i could find an amp with a better phono stage it would be nice). My current amp has a phono stage as well, but I doubt it is any good, considering how cheap the equipment is, so i opted for an external one.

If I got the the studio monitors, my setup would go: Turntable > Preamp > simple passive switcher (PC would be on other input) > studio monitors

I may get a passive pre-amp down the road that has volume control as well.

u/b1g_bake · 1 pointr/homeassistant

this.

I have an IP cam and a basic audio monitor.

audio monitor lets us or anyone watching the baby listen from a distance(ex downstairs or out on the deck). Also easy to pack up and travel with for vacation. must have. even if baby is in the next room the amplification helps wake you when you are tired. I have this one

IP cam lets us check in on the little one to see if we do need to go into the room to help. Also useful to monitor them to see when they do finally settle down to sleep. Let's the grandparents check in on baby remotely as well. I have this one in the corner of the ceiling. I have one admin account for me, then a guest account for the wife and grandparents. I will be looking into rolling my own solution for viewing the live feed soon, but their app works good.

A video baby monitor is an all in one solution. I passed because each unit I looked at seemed to lack something. Plus that was another device to keep track of and keep charged. I can use any device to view the feed from an IP cam. IP cam will not become obsolete once the baby grows up either.

edit- I use an old android phone as a white noise machine for baby, if you plan on going that route.

First off, the toughswitch doesn't support 802.3af, while most cameras want this. So you might want to look at a netgear or HP switch instead for PoE. You could add an instant 802.3af adapter for the nanostation to keep things clean.

Secondly, for your camera I suggest these:

Thanks, pal. I'm running a TCC MM Preamp that I've been using for a decade now. I'm not unhappy with my setup, I just tried out the Grados on a hi-setup in the store and have never heard drums punch like that. I figured that the preamp is the weak link in my chain right now.

I was hoping to have something that wouldn't rely on the receiver to sound good. Perhaps this is an unnecessary concern? I'd probably be fine using the receiver.

The motion detection is pretty useless, but it has an audio detection that I've found useful. I get an alert on my phone and then I can check the camera to see what the fuss is about.

My case is obviously different since I'm more concerned with things breaking in rather than out, but they are cheap enough that I have total surveillance on my pens and I can check with my phone anytime to count my chickens and make sure they are all there. So after many months of researching what was best for us, we decided to go with the “Yi camera.” Being $60 for a dual purpose camera that has 360 degree rotation, it’s really impressed us. We also always have our phones on us so having phones AND another baby monitor seemed to be overkill when we could just use our phones to connect to a system like this.

It uses WiFi and being that we will be back at work come 8 weeks PP with my mom nannying for us, we wanted to be able to log in and check on our girl throughout the day. We can talk to each other also with the voice recorder, but there is a second lag like a walkie talkie has in between responses. Not that big of a deal honestly. We wanted a system that could double as a baby monitor & security system so that we aren’t spending hundreds on a baby monitor that will only be used for a couple of years. It detects “baby crying” and will send you an alert with a 10 second recording of what the crying was. It picks up our dogs barking often lol.

Don’t mind the mess but here’s my kitchen with lights on in the evening and here’s the nursery using night vision. Here’s the nursery picking up my SO and I talking and listening to music while I was getting ready outside of the nursery during normal day light.

All in all, we purchased/were gifted three cameras which was roughly the price of one baby monitor we were looking into. I’d rate it a 8/10 for overall quality. Hope this helps!

OK, thanks.

I'll do the same. You mind replying or PMing me if you find a good one?

Edit: What do you think of these?

No problem. Here's the 3mp that I use (the resolution is high enough for pretty much anything I need): https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B01I01QLTE/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o06_s01?ie=UTF8&psc=1

Thoughts on these ?

Forgot I also need long network cables.

I have a gigabit switch now but the ports are mostly used for my network already so I think it makes more sense to get an additional POE switch vs the injector.

So, one word of advice is to define what your goals are.

  • Do you only care about catching vandals?
  • Do you want entrance/exit visibility in case of an active shooter situation?
  • Are you also looking to handle discipline cases?
  • Who needs access to footage? Central/Admin Office? Principals? School Resource Officers?
  • Do you require/want authentication?
  • Do you want a closed circuit system, ethernet/poe system (IP), something in between?

Answering these questions will help guide your decision process. Having said, I like some of the following offerings Sony's OnSSI, Cisco's Video Surveillance Manager, and Trendnet

These are larger offerings, and I would also recommend using a consultant to make any of these happen.

If you're in need of something much smaller, quick-n-dirty, the Arlo indoor/outdoor system isn't bad (can get from Best Buy) and I've heard ravings about the Canary video system as well from some smaller schools.

In the meantime, not the WORST idea in the world to look into a fake camera or 2 to at least try and deter the less malevolent.

the mounts are standard camera mounts and you can them for next to nothing in the states from amazon. I bought these cheapos and they work great, i actually like them better than the ones that came with the lighthouse 2.0's. These were 11 dollars for 4.

I've had really good luck with the Reolink RLC-410S. I have three. They are on sale right now for $60, and there's a $5 coupon on one.

I run mine at 1080P, and the picture is very clear. And if my PVR goes offline for any reason, the camera itself also detects and records motion to the internal SD card.

I have this nanny cam. You can set parameters for when it records, it has night vision, you can control it from your phone and move around to see the whole room, and it has a 2 way speaker on it so you can actually talk to your dogs or just listen in on what they're doing. I love it and it's relatively cheap too. Oh and it's wifi enabled so you can move it around your house, you don't have to have confined to one specific area of the house.

We got this one: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B01CW4BN5M/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o08_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

Kid's still got a few weeks in the hole, but we have used it to successfully monitor the dog while we're gone and it works well. We paid $80, but looks like it is $75 now.

I just bought 8 of these for use at my business, and have been amazed by the quality. EDIT to add price was $40 each.

I bought a POE switch and Blue Iris, working good so far.

this one will do. Foscam has a maddening number of models. This is probably a middle of the line. More expensive ones have better resolution. http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00LVQ7IWA?keywords=foscam%20ip%20camera&qid=1453428122&ref_=sr_1_4&s=electronics&sr=1-4

Hello Everyone!

I am looking to get a nice pair of headphones to use with my turntable, a B&O Beogram 1700. The preamp is a TCC TC-750LC (http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000A36XZS/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o00_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1)
And I will probably be getting a Schiit Magni 2 for the amp (http://schiit.com/products/magni-2).

I don't really need isolation since I live in a relatively quiet home and am not planning on taking these headphones anywhere because they are for vinyl and possibly some gaming, but mostly for my own personal turntable activities.
I've never really had any headphones before, other than the apple earpods which came with my iphone and various cheap headsets for gaming. I would like to try full-sized headphones. Ideally something comfortable for long listening periods.

I tend to listen to a lot of industrial and atmospheric/ambient music. So bands like The Legendary Pink Dots (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kpXGeUy2ddE), Nine Inch Nails (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ao-Sahfy7Hg), Swans (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1jSdTBGhDSg), Tim Hecker (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1NkZVWXK5jM), Oneohtrix Pointnever (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Wg6g3uScbqw). To name a few. Theres some variation.

I'm not sure what I'm looking for as far as tonal balance is concerned. I don't know what would make for the best listening experience for these genres or bands.

My budget is $350

Thanks in advance! :)

Here's the deets...

Record player: Pro-ject Debut Carbon. Fantastic upgrade to the Debut line that is, IMO, well worth the extra $100. After having various record players in the past, I am happy with this one.

Pre-amp: TCC TC-750LC. For a low price magnetic pre-amp, I can't complain. Could it be better? Certainly... Would it cost a lot more? Definitely. For $50, I'd say this is one of the best buys you can get.

Speakers: Pioneer SP-BS22-LR Bookshelf speakers. Again, a great buy on the low end of price. I believe the set is around $150 retail, although you can probably snag them as low as $100. Nice range in sound, especially on the low end. I am using these as the 2.0 part of a 5.1 surround sound. When playing records, I only run through these speakers, as opposed to a 2.1 setup with my subwoofer. The sound is much cleaner that way.

Receiver: Sony STR-DH800. Nothing to note here. Just passed the sound to the speakers... I'd like to eventually get the record player onto it's own receiver, but my house isn't large enough to warrant a separate system.

Furniture: Ikea, Ikea, Ikea. Expedit, Expedit, Expedit. I have tweaked some of the pieces with some add-ons... But yea, the pictures are self-explanatory there.

Side note, I post some records from time to time on my Instagram account, @hopsandwax.

I did it!

All I put in BlueIris is the IP of the camera. I logged into my Asus router and saw the camera connected, and copied the IP address.

The quality is really bad though. Much worse than I thought. It's a 3MP with a resolution of 2304x1296, but it looks worse than 720p. I've set max resolution in BlueIris, but looks just terrible. Not sure if it's a setting in Blueiris or if the camera just sucks.

My dashcam looks better than this and it's just 1080p.

My husband set up one of these
https://www.amazon.com/YI-Camera-Wireless-Security-Surveillance/dp/B01CW4BN5M/ref=sr_1_7?ie=UTF8&qid=1495234293&sr=8-7&keywords=yi+home
They have an app you can download to watch. When you're home it's best to turn the camera off as it takes up a good amount of bandwidth. I now use it to tell my dog to get off the couch. :)

u/iwouldnotknow · 0 pointsr/running

For running, I recommend trying to keep the camera as small and lightweight as possible. It is also important that the camera be waterproof since he will be sweating on the camera. Cameras like the gopro are too heavy with which to take on long runs. Here is an example of a light weight camera: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B009TQ4L5Q/ref=olp_product_details?ie=UTF8&me=
