I have an iPad Pro 12.9 and just bought the iPad 2018. The note taking experience is identical. If you're just looking to take notes and do basic tasks such as web browsing or playing some basic games, you're best bet is the iPad 2018. The Pro line is meant for beefier tasks like light video editing and content creation. It has a better CPU, more memory, a better screen and better speakers. All of which you could do without if you only need the basics. Oh, and you'll save a couple hundred dollars!

Edit: Oh, and if you're going to be doing a lot of note taking, also get this screen protector (or a matte one like it). The "matte-ness" of it makes writing on it much better than writing directly on the screen or using a glossy screen protector.

And FWIW, this is a nice case (especially for the price) and has a loop to store the pencil. I have it for my Pro and I liked it so much I bought one for the iPad '18. It has a "taking notes in a university" vibe going for it.

I have been using the Supershieldz Matte Screen Protector for awhile now and love it. I use it for taking notes during work and school, feels just like my friends iPad using the PaperLike screen protector.

u/robeschi · 7 pointsr/ipad

This is a pretty good one. It feels almost like a nice smooth medium nib fountain pen on a Rhodia dotpad. The only ballpoint I have laying around is a Schneider Slider Edge, and on normal copy paper it feels really close to the Apple Pencil on this screen protector. In other words, there's still very little scratchiness or feedback on the iPad with the Pencil, but it doesn't feel like it's sliding off the screen when you write with it.

u/TheZeldaLova · 6 pointsr/ipad

It is slightly noticeable. I recently replaced the one I had and was surprised at how much nicer the screen looks without it, but I love the writing/drawing experience with it, so I won't turn back. There's also MUCH less glare, making it usable in almost direct sunlight. Also, you get two for, like, 8 bucks. I have a 9.7 Pro, but here's a link for the 10.5 ones:

This is my ipad-focused case that I keep in my backpack. It contains the following:

(1) USB C to Lightning Cable

(1) USB C to USB C Cable

(1) USB A to Lightning Cable

(1) Foldable Keyboard

(1) USB C Hub

(1) 45W USB C Power Bank & (1) 45W Wall Charger

(1) Set of Apple Airpods

(2) 128GB Flashdrives

I'm also using this case for my iPad, and this screen protector.

Hope this helps!

This is the one I use specifically:
https://www.amazon.com/JETech-Protector-12-9-Inch-Generation-Compatible/dp/B07GZTBPNT?ref_=ast_bbp_dp

I've been using the same screen protector for a year with no issues. I have found that a little dust gets trapped around the edges, but I think that is an issue that all screen protectors face. I tend to use the JETech brand for most of my phones/tablets because they are cheap but offer excellent quality and customer service.

It looks like there is now a 2-pack of the same protector for the same price.

The 12.9. I bought the iCarez matte protector:
Amazon link

u/BlueMacaw · 4 pointsr/ProCreate

Have you tried using a screen protector? I’ve been using an inexpensive one by iCarez and it’s helped me get more accurate lines by "gripping" the Apple Pencil tip. The pencil tends to slide too quickly across the surface and this protector has been the best solution for me.

u/ashinyhoppip · 4 pointsr/ipad

hello! I use the iCarez matter screen protector purchased on Amazon here is the direct link to the exact item I purchased

I've had it on for about two days, and so far it is doing is job well! It does attract fingerprints if they are oily, but I dont find this so be much of an issue as i mainly use my apple pencil and write on my ipad. I find the apple pencil still works like it is intended to with the screen protector on. I also like that they included sticker tools to help you apply, as well as to remove dust particles if you happen to get some stuck underneath your screen protector (I did, and I was able to remove them with fair ease). I hope this helps!

u/Darkster · 4 pointsr/ipad

I didn’t originally use a screen protector on my iPad Pro but with a long trip coming up I felt its probably a good idea to have. Overall it works great for me. Some people will find touch issues with it but I’m a little heavy handed and cant say I notice it much. So far based on how much travel and use my iPad is getting I am glad I got the screen protector. I use it with the Apple Smart Keyboard.

I have the Anker tempered glass screen protector from Amazon on my 10.5 pro. Works great, went on easy with no bubbles or marks. I also have the Apple Smart Keyboard and a compatible iBlason case from Amazon on it. The case is thin and has a clear back so it looks minimal. Finally, I carry it around in the Apple iPad Pro leather sleeve. It looks and feels great. It’s expensive but I found one brand new on eBay for half the price of retail stores. I’ll have to look it up. The one thing many matte type protectors are notorious for is the rainbow/ moire pattern effect. The tech armor protector has minimal effect to the point that I stopped noticing it after a day of use.

Just started reading reviews of PaperLike and overall it only has a 3 star review out of 12 reviews.

Here is a link to the screen protector I use and am quite pleased with...

Tech Armor Anti-glare

u/_maldorito · 3 pointsr/ipad

I bought the iCarez anti-glare one. I like it for drawing because it adds a bit of tooth to the display, so the pencil doesn't glide too much.

u/canllaith · 3 pointsr/ipad

I’ve used this brand on various sizes and love them. I have the same one on the iPad for six months to a year - I change it when something happens to scratch it (where by something I mean my son.)

Seconded the screen protector. This is what I have and seems to be the favorite among this subreddit:

https://www.amazon.com/dp/B016B12TSW

u/timconradinc · 2 pointsr/ipad

idk about 'best' but I use these. I haven't had any problems with it, but I haven't tried to remove it.

I would certainly recommend a protector of some variety with the pencil as I had some small scratches in the glass that had to have been from something on the tip.

u/aitch83 · 2 pointsr/iPadPro

iCarez.

Recently installed it on my own device after 3 months of owning it and I’m telling you, it has changed my life.

u/Rainarrow · 2 pointsr/Surface

I personally use this:

https://www.amazon.com/Mr-Shield-Microsoft-Anti-Glare-Replacement/dp/B0169SB4MY/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1467831456&sr=8-1&keywords=Surface+Pro+4+matte

It helps with the glare issue a lot while only slightly reduce clarity.

I switched to the 2H pen tip after this.

u/scottjl · 2 pointsr/ipad
  1. Plenty to choose from, this is my current favorite, I like the split design and it folds up compact. Anker makes several, such as this one. Microsoft also makes a good (but pricey) keyboard. Keyboards are always going on sale, so keep an eye out or use Camel.
  2. I recently picked up this TurtleSkin case. It's basically a big silicone bumper. I have a glass screen protector on as well. The bumper gives me some decent grip and keeps the front and back from touching when it's lying flat on a surface. I got black but might order another one in green or blue.

You can import brushes, there are some bugs/quirks with some right now, but Affinity is working on them.

Lastly, I can recommend this Pencil sleeve. I got the glow-in-the-dark version. Gives the Pencil a good grip, keeps it from rolling around, I can find it easily in the dark and it keeps the cap on! Note it will no longer fit in most "Pencil loops" on cases and such. Doesn't bother me, as I carry everything in this felt laptop sleeve.
u/ucsdsig · 2 pointsr/ipad

I use this screen protector with my 12.9 iPad Pro / Zugu case combo. Works great. Screen protector adheres perfectly, no lifting along the edges, and no touch screen sensitivity issues.

I am currently attending uni and from my experience this past year with the 10.5. I highly recommend it. Simply because you might not always have the luxury in terms of desk space of having a 12.5 with you and also because of weight. My mom bought the 12.5 and regretted it within a few days because of the weight and sheer size.

If you are saving money or you would rather use that money for something else, I recommend using your petrol points to purchase it and spend a little to get the accessories you would want to have. In contrast if you want to be future proof, don’t mind waiting a bit, and don’t mind spending a fair penny; purchase the new one. Roughly with the items listed below and getting an 10.5 with 256GB and with AppleCare set me back roughly $1250 USD so you have a rough idea of how much you might be spending.

Accessories that I bought that I also highly recommend and use on a daily basis are listed:

I bought a refurbished iPad (not pro) a couple years ago and it honestly felt like new, and saves you a couple bucks. So, if you're looking for a budget of $860, which MSRP isn't even the lowest iPad config, your best bet is getting refurbished or using one of the many Black Friday sales. (Also the iPad Pro link doesn't even say specific price, just lists a bunch of sellers, which isn't always be reliable)

Also, I would suggest iCarez instead of Paperlike. Paperlike isn't bad by any means but I definitely feel like since you are under a budget you are better off with something a little cheaper, that offers similar performance. Plus there are plenty of posts on here about matte screen protectors, if you want to find out which is best. And I can't say about the power brick as I don't use one, but the battery life on any iPad Pro is fantastic where I feel you wouldn't even need one.

(and try and link the items a little better than just copying and pasting the link, like how i did with the icarez)

u/cnxyz · 2 pointsr/Nexus7

For accessories, I went with the exact following:

Screen Protector

TPU shell

Neoprene zipper-less wrap around sleeve

So far, I only have the screen protector. Tracking shows the TPU shell to arrive on Tuesday, and the sleeve will probably come next week.

Was going for simple, ease of use/transport, and nothing too professional looking (like a folio case). This is supposed to be my leisure toy, so these accessories are supposed to accent my lifestyle intention for it :)

I got this screen protector from amazon:
https://www.amazon.com/Surface-Pro-2017-Screen-Protector/dp/B013SZIM6W/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1502636128&sr=8-1&keywords=omoton+surface+pro

I am extremely satisfied with this screen protector. It's as good as the Zagg protector, but at far more reasonable cost. Probably manufactured in the same factory. It is tempered glass and liquid smooth to the touch. I have no problems at all with touch, the device registers touch and pen input with no issue at all. Applying the protector was also very easy with the included kit (they provide a piece of tape to collect all the dust and lint). You can't even tell that a screen protector is on, it looks and feels like the natural screen, very very good. You only get one chance though, 1 screen protector in this kit, so read the instructions carefully

I'm loving the feel of it but it is SO reflective, it's kinda hard to use my iPad in bright rooms now. Not sure if i'll keep it yet.

u/Caututious · 2 pointsr/ipad

I just got the icarez matte screen protector yesterday. It was recommended in other threads on this sub, so I went for it. $7 with prime. Couldn't be happier. It feels great writing with the pencil and only has a minimal effect with screen brightness/clarity. I'm glad it came with 2, though. I ended up going through both because they're a lot harder to apply than a phone screen protector.

u/xyexz · 2 pointsr/Surface

I'm using this one:
https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0169SB4MY

I've gotten this same brand for some other machines and they really hold up well and work well with pens.

I have not noticed and sensitivity issues for touch or pen and with the plastic tip (part of the $10 tip kit for Surface) it feels like writing on actual paper.

It seems to help with picking up finger oils as well even though it's not a listed feature, I mainly got it for matte because I HATE glare.

u/martini5470 · 2 pointsr/Surface

I put a matte screen protector on my SP5 to protect the screen, but MAINLY to reduce the glare. Here's the one I got from Amazon: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B016AUCD6W/ref=oh_aui_search_detailpage?ie=UTF8&psc=1

u/Sigoogle · 2 pointsr/iPadPro

I wanted to go with the matte protector at first, i was used to it with my previous iPad but it was the Mini 3 and the AP didn’t exist for it back then.
Now i have the iPad Pro 12.9” (2018) with the AP2, but i was more scared that it would wear down and damage the tip with my everyday drawing use, especially as i’m more used to drawing heavier than most people. I looked up reviews that said their AP tip appeared more worn down when using a matte protector, and it also really affected the quality of the screen, colours didn’t appear true etc. And seeing as the second gen AP didn’t come with a spare, i wasn’t willing to possibly pay for new tips every few months of everyday use, i’m used to having my Wacom tablet with plenty of spare nibs to hand.

I bought this screen protector, it’s tempered glass so it hasn’t got the paper-like feel you’re looking for, but if you’re also worried about tip wear, it might be worth giving the tempered glass protector a try :)

No rhyme or reason, just they had good reviews and are cheap enough. They also offer a small bulk discount with an Amazon Business account, which is always nice. They are responsive and work fine with both the pen and fingers.

Thank you for posing that drawing stand. I was lookin for something exactly like that as my Smart Cover fails to hold it up at that angle while I'm drawing on it. How do you like using it?

Also, I recommend getting a matte screen protector. Not only does it help reduce glare and fingerprints, but I think drawing on it works a lot better too. You get that extra feedback and it feels like you're drawing on paper. Can get them pretty cheap on Amazon. https://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B015BOKLO4/ref=yo_ii_img?ie=UTF8&psc=1

u/draxlrose · 1 pointr/ipad

I use my ipad for.netflixing, reading, email/browsing, amazon etc. Some games like clash of clans. I don't do much typing on it but sometimes its useful to.have.

The screen protector is a must because the ipad screen is a fingerprint magnet! Thats one thing i disliked..I got the Sparin tempered glass screen protector and just installed it and i liked it. It minimizes the fingerprint compared to the screen itself. And the fingerprints can be easily wiped off unlike thr screen which just makes it worse when you try to wipe it off unless you have those special microfiber cloths with you at all times.
I also got a case. Its the thinnest one i could find that has a screen cover and could be used as a stand as well. See links below of accessories.

I don't have any problem with the weight of the ipad since i mostly use it in my home but even if i take it with me i don't find it too heavy.

It works great with the airpods and i love being able to switch audio very quickly between my iphone and my ipad.

I haven't tested a stylus yet. Obviously ipad pro is the better ipad but the price is double so definitely wasn't worth it. And the processor in this ipad 2017 is perfectly fine for anything an avergae user will throw at it.

Here are the accessories i got.

Why not one of the matte glass screen protectors? The glass part is what would protect the device the best...

https://www.amazon.com/Anti-Fingerprint-Tempered-Protector-10-5-Inch-Anti-Glare/dp/B072WR5T8Q

u/jariete · 1 pointr/ipad

I bought the [Tech Armor] (https://www.amazon.com/Protector-Tech-Armor-Anti-Glare-Anti-Fingerprint/dp/B016B12TSW) brand. It's anti-glare and protects from the potential scratches by the pencil, but most of all the matte finish feels excellent with the Pencil. It's not quite a paper texture, but it's a lot smoother and less awkward than drawing straight on the glass.

u/Starboy3 · 1 pointr/ipad

I have this one

I got the Tech Armor matte (https://www.amazon.com/Tech-Armor-Anti-Glare-Anti-Fingerprint-Protectors/dp/B016B12TSW) mostly because you got 2 for $10, and I fully expected to mess up (and, of course, is didn't). This is for the 12.9" but same difference. It's good... It's a lot granier than I remember but it feels good with the pencil.

u/artaru · 1 pointr/ipad

Sure, it was this one. Do note that's for the bigger iPad pro.

u/GKA05 · 1 pointr/iPadPro

IMO screen protector has been a no-brainer investment for a long time xD It puts your mind at ease while typing/writing/drawing on the screen.

I chose a cheap matte screen protector (link here) and find the display quality barely affected, anti-glare and anti-fingertip is a bonus. Personally I feel Paperlike was overhyped and overpriced for what they offered.

u/fcllencngels · 1 pointr/ipad

I actually use a matte tempered glass screen protector. in the past, someone took my ipad and dropped it face down, shattering the entire screen, and since then I don’t use film protectors. But i still wanted something matte since i’ll be using this 90% for notes and 10% for entertainment so I got this screen protector on amazon which I love!

It's tempered, so it lasted a lot longer than hardware store glass, but recently (after four days straight printing PETG at 250 onto the glass bed at 100 degrees), the stock bed finally gave out. Took out a chunk like hardware store glass/mirror does, except with the tempered stock bed there's hairline cracks going away from the chunk that pulled out. I think if I heat cycled it again, it would break into a million pieces, like tempered glass does.

I watched a video recently where the guy, who was complaining about his glass beds pulling chunks with PETG, said that after breaking to many glass beds, he tried a bunch of other stuff and finally settled on borosilicate glass, with a tempered glass oleophobic screen protector for a Microsoft Surface stuck to it.

I'm pretty keen to try that. I've been trying to find the biggest screen device with a flat surface I can find.

So I'm picking up the iPad Pro 2018 this weekend and was getting some accessories for it. I'm paying for this myself so my compromise will have to come with the accessories. I don't really need the pencil but it would be nice to have.

My issue is with the screen protector. Now that the iPad has been out for almost a year, I wanted to know the screen damage difference between the tempered glass and matte-style. I'm not really drawing or anything, and I've always used TechMatte screen protectors because I really like the tempered glass feel. I've had no issues with it on any of my phones, whatsoever. I don't see how it would be any different for the iPad version.

Questions:

How much does glass affect writing vs writing on a matte?

Does using glass create the same amount of screen deterioration seen while using matte protectors?

I got a glossy one. Works great. This is the one I went with

I’ve been using an amFilm tempered glass protector on mine for two weeks and am really happy with it.

u/apathak17 · 1 pointr/iPadPro

So if you’re looking for a tempered glass one, this is the best one I’ve had experience with. Best part, if you register your purchase within 30 days, you get a “lifetime” warranty which allows you up to TWO replacements for any reason.

I use this screen protector from Amazon: [3-Pack] Supershieldz for Apple iPad Pro 10.5 inch Screen Protector, Anti-Glare & Anti-Fingerprint (Matte) Shield + Lifetime Replacements Warranty- Retail Packaging https://www.amazon.com/dp/B071JPDP5R/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_Xb5UBb1GGN1BW

So far it has served me well, but there are some instances where I am using my iPad outdoors and find that the screen protector hinders my ability to view the screen slightly.

u/SurfaceDockGuy · 1 pointr/Surface

Yes its the same. The ports are the same too. See my post with SP3/SP4/SP2017 side-by-side

Here is a product on Amazon that is compatible with both tablets:

I went with this on my first gen and I just bought them again for the second. They really help with the pencil. They give it a little bite so it's no so slippery.

Just installed one of these yesterday and I'm loving it so far. Cuts down on glare and fingerprints and makes drawing and writing with the pen feel more like pen and paper. Take your time installing (I used the tape-hinge method). There's even dust removal tape in the package which worked awesome as I was slowly lowering the film down.

u/Volerikan · 1 pointr/ipad

Thanks. I used to have a matte screen protector on my old 12.9” iPad. Definitely degrades the screen quality a bit, but that paper-like texture and not having to worry about fingerprints made it worth it to me. Just to double check, this is the one you’re talking about?

u/RoccoSteal · 1 pointr/ipad

Yeah ignore it. I went with JETech instead. Both case and screen protector.

EDIT: You’ll notice bad reviews for the case but those are before they updated it today. It now supports Apple Pencil charging.

u/beartolome · 1 pointr/Surface

Im using this tempered glass protector. No problem whatsoever regarding with using the surface pen and typing on the screen. It’s responsive.

Meego brand

I've ordered this after seeing this brand get good reviews from past iPad users who are also looking for the feel of paper.

This will be my first iPad and pencil combo but I've played with the pencil in stores before. The plain screen is too smooth and slick for my tastes, and I've had good matte phone screen protectors before. Hopefully it will indeed do the trick.

Honestly I prefer this :OMOTON Surface Pro Tempered Glass Screen Protector because it is cheaper and basically the same thing as the one that you showed me. It’s a bit difficult to apply it, but the instructions are simple enough that if you just remove the bubbles and the dust, it will be great and clean.

Also the previous screen protector I used saved me from a big crack on the screen, so I think it’s safe to say that a screen protector will be useful in the long term.

Edit : I’m not sure if amazon works on where you live, so take this link with a grain of salt

Not OP, but I’d recommend this protector for pencil usage — great for handwriting

Late reply, but I'm using this one!

It's a nice surface; you lose the retina quality of the screen, but the image quality is still amazing. Gives some nice tooth. I didn't mind the smooth surface as much as some people do, but this is definitely better. It looks a lot like a cintiq screen with it, but with the better resolution of the iPad.

I bought these after not returning the horrible Moko brand ones. Used the tape hinge installation method and it went on perfectly. Cheap and free shipping with Amazon Prime

I pulled the trigger on a screen protector and I'm pretty sure it won't match up now that I've read this. I guess we'll see Tuesday! This is what I bought - https://www.amazon.com/MEGOO-Protector-Installation-Anti-Scratch-Compatible/dp/B06XK6VQGQ

u/SecretAgent57 · 1 pointr/Nexus7

I did the same thing with my first Nexus 7 - kept the plastic wrap on until the screen protector arrived. After that, our polydactyl kitten was allowed to play cat games on the tablet. Unbelievably, neither the screen nor the protector was ever scratched! That product, which is still on the N7 a year later, was [amFilm Premium Screen Protector] ( http://www.amazon.com/Premium-Protector-Invisible--Retail-Packing/dp/B008LURQ76/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1375324783&sr=8-1&keywords=amFilm+nexus+7). The screen on the new Nexus7 is so beautiful, however, that I think I'll skip the protector this time. The cat can find something else to play with!

Edit: the link is to the 2012 version screen protector. I don't know if amFilm makes one for the new N7.

I use this for my iPad 2018
https://www.amazon.com/dp/B013JZCAZK - Sparin

and this for my iPad 2017
https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00X28GH0Y - JetTech

I decided to change to Sparin because I heard that people used it with the Apple Pencil + iPad 2018 and it worked fine. The Jettech one comes with two though, so if you fail to affix the screen protector (too many bubbles etc), you can reset / use another one. Sparin comes with only one screen protector.

I (kind of) use UAG Metropolis cases for both of them and the screen protectors fit very well. The edges do not get pushed because UAG has small yet very good corner protections.

I have an iPad 1 from 8+ years ago (which still works), but when I bought it, I bought a cheap folio case (about 14 euros). I dropped it on the floor about a week after I bought it (from my bed), and the corner was dented! It has one black (dented) corner now.

Since then, I promise myself the next time I buy a new iPad, I'll never skimp on a case, ever.

Because I seem to drop my iPad at least twice, I use tempered glass instead of matte/plastic screen protectors/none at all for better protection.

u/onesliceofham · 1 pointr/Surface

I'm currently using this matte screen protector on my surface, so far it works pretty well.

If you're in the USA, this one:

https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B013SZIM6W

Is the one I have...and $15USD to my door in 48 hours beats $6USD to my door in 1 entire month. Also I wouldn't trust ePacket shipping for something fragile like a glass protector. At least with Amazon returns/exchanges are fast and easy.

I've had UPS/FedEx/USPS ruin TG protectors before....but with them the return/exchange process doesn't take 2 months of mail time.

My spouse uses the Zugu Muse case (https://www.zugucase.com/the-muse-case-for-2018-ipad-pro-12-9-in-3rd-gen/) for his. He’s also an artist. And, he uses a matte “paper type” screen protector - though we don’t use the “Paperlike” brand. We found a similar brand on Amazon with better reviews. You get two of them for $9.95. Might be a decent one to try with less investment than the Paperlike brand. https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07GZKL8WH/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_search_asin_title?ie=UTF8&psc=1 Also, usually Amazon has the Zugu case with free Prime shipping which might end up cheaper/faster arrival than direct from Zugu. He’s not had any issues with his screen protector pulling up. In fact, I’d also say that the edges are almost held down, if anything. Full protection, magnetic pencil charging, pencil travel pouch built into the case, 8 or so angles w/strong magnetic foot, auto off/on, easy to open cover w/ the tab, perfect cutouts. No affiliation w/the company. Just really enjoyed it ourselves.

The best matte screen protector I found for 9.7 is iCarez Anti-Glare/Anti-Fingerprint Matte Finish Screen Protector for iPad Pro / Air 2 / Air - 2 Pack - Retail Packaging

It only comes with enough stickers for one application, so make sure to put them back on the waxy paper so you can use them again on the second screen application.

I purchased this screen protector for mine. I used the same brand on my 10.5" and it felt very smooth and did a great job preventing smudges/fingerprints. It does add a grainy texture to the picture though.

I have a matte screen protector from amazon https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07GZMMYHT/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o04_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1.
The first one they sent blocked Face ID but they sent a replacement quickly once the production problem was discovered.
I love the matte feel especially while using the pencil. But there is a hit to the display quality. I’ve seen a lot of advertising for “paperlike” on YouTube videos does anyone know if that brand has been able to minimize the affect on the display.

u/Vidcore · 1 pointr/iPadPro

You didn't specify which model or screen size, but I bought this one for the 2018 12.9 model five months ago and it's still working great. Cheap, and comes with 2. I am still using the first one.
