Knife nut here. Allow me to expound.

Serrated vs Straight - Serrations are good for cutting tough soft things. Thick rope and such. Not much else.

Locking Blade with Pocket Clip - Gerber is awful. Avoid at all costs. Seriously. The construction is sub par and the materials are worse.

Kershaw is a good budget recommendation. Of the Kershaws, I would recommend the entire Ken Onion design lineup (the Leek, the Shallot, and the Chive are the three I would purchase myself. In fact, I own all three)

For the more expensive (and, frankly, gorgeous) options, I cannot recommend Benchmade enough. So many classy blades. In fact, Bechmade gets its own category.

Benchmade - Model 586: Aluminium + black G10 handles, AXIS lock, classy as fuck.

Bali-songs: Models 32, 51, 62, 63, and 67. Interesting little (and big) blades. Very fun, extremely beautiful, and a real crowd pleaser.

And that's all I'm going to type for now (at work). If you are interested, check out Benchmade, Knifecenter, and such. Feel free to head over to /r/knives /r/knifeclub for more information, or just ask me, here in comments or with a PM, if you have any questions.

Oh, and do be careful with those balis. They are partially toys, but very very sharp toys.

EDIT: I will add more when I get home late tonight if I remember to.

List:

Bookbag - It always changes brands but this is the layout. It held up for over a year of High school abuse for what it's worth. ( https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07S6LWPS6/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_i_U8IDDbA3M3JDJ )

Anker Portable Charger - Yes it has a lot of stickers. It doesn't have USB Type C, but it lasts me well over a week for casual charges on the headphones and some friends' phones. ( https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01JIWQPMW/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_i_IbJDDbA3Z070Z )

Breath Mints - Because speeches and girlfriends are a thing. (To clarify I have one girlfriend and multiple speeches)

Calculator - AP Calc is a jerk, but this helps. ( https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00001N2QU/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_i_ocJDDb5R4KNS5 )

Laptop Behind Things - This was provided by my school for certain classes, and it's not too bad for the price. The charge lasts well over a day. ( https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01DBGVB7K/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_i_6cJDDbBPSRRYF )

Charging cord - This is fairly new to me, but works just as you'd imagine. It allows quick charging which is a plus. I also recommend Chafon charging multicables. ( https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07V8G85DY/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_i_seJDDb9Z4CY8F )

Red Cards - If I need to write a note to a friend, these come in handy and are more useful than Field Notes (come at me bois) for my daily use. ( https://www.amazon.com/dp/B001AMO8A0/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_i_ffJDDbZFZZXEJ )

Fancy Cards - Honestly, any Theory 11 deck is fancy, good for magic which I like, and convenient for playing a normal card game with friends. I switch this out with other cards pretty regularly, but I always carry a full deck. ( https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07JMNSXRB/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_i_SfJDDbC1EHH8Q )

Wireless Earbuds - They are dated so they aren't the best anymore, but they are still kicking. They connect to my phone and laptop whenever necessary. There are alternatives but they aren't bad for the price IMO. ( https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07582VVJR/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_i_vgJDDb83TT6MF )

"Flippy Knife" - Ever since I bought this, I haven't been able to set it down for more than a day. It's all plastic, and I only use it in classes where the teachers don't mind. (Side note to anybody who has one of these; twist rubber bands up and place them in the handles near the end to make it quieter and slightly heavier) ( https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07CRMRJ2K/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_i_4gJDDbPXHPXRF )

Not Listed - A calculus textbook, some folders, notebooks, pens, a spare FSP Bullet cartridge, pencils, a jacket in the bottom because weather, and a scrunched up gym bag in case a friend's bag breaks or I need more room than my bag allows.

I don't use my locker so I rely pretty heavily on this stuff. It's not for everyone, but hey. If anybody has any questions on the gear or any suggestions, feel free to comment. Thanks for taking the time to check out my post!

the 940-2 is the model that you have, with the s30v stainless, g10 scales, and green spacers. theres also the 940-1 which has s90v stainless, carbon fiber scales, and blue back spacers. as well as the classic straight up 940 which has s30v stainless and aluminum scales.

theres also the 940-1601 , the 940-1701 .. many variants of the 940 design available. same knife, different materials.

i have the same one you do, the 940-2, and i think its awesome. easily my favorite folder

u/Connguy · 6 pointsr/knifeclub

I don't know what you wanted to do with this blade, but I can almost guarantee you there are far superior pieces for less money (in the $25-30). Gerber doesn't even tell you what steel the blade uses, they call it "High Carbon Stainless". This means it's probably a very cheap Chinese steel. But in this price range you won't find much better, so that's not a huge issue. The big problem with this knife is handle. It's cheap plastic like is used in all mass-produced Chinese crap, with a cheap rubber coating intended for improved grip. If you put any sort of strain on this handle (like a survival knife is supposed to get), it's going to crap out on you. This guy on blade forums broke his in the initial round of testing.

Maybe you should consider an SOG blade or a Kershaw Funxion if you're looking for a partially serrated, more tool-like knife. On the other hand, if all you want is a folder knife, there are literally hundreds of better options all over this sub for less cost. I love my Kershaw Scrambler

u/YourTechSupport · 6 pointsr/VEDC

Kershaw Funxion EMT

I used the strap cutter a lot when I was helping a family member in hospice care. The half-serrated blade was really good at breaking down cardboard.

I'm trialing the Boker Plus Rescom as a daily driver replacement. It does all the job i need and doesn't scare the co-workers as much.

u/Devonacoustic · 6 pointsr/knifeclub

If you’re not looking for super stylish the steel will cutjack in d2 would be a good choice. A nice gentleman’s option would be the boker urban trapper. Amazon has them right now for like $69 a piece. I’m planning on the urban trapper for my groomsman https://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B00K60OSRK/ref=mp_s_a_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1523557220&sr=8-2&pi=AC_SX236_SY340_QL65&keywords=boker+urban+trapper

u/connor_lassiter · 5 pointsr/balisong

You can buy them on Amazon right now for retail price. I know you're probably just trying to save some money, but might be hard to find someone willing to sell a squiddy (especially if they have to cover shipping costs).

u/glynstlln · 5 pointsr/mallninjashit

I was going to say at least $2,000 because of the two JagdKommando's however upon closer inspection, those aren't even official JagdKommando knifes, they are crappy knock-offs.

u/dovon18 · 5 pointsr/EDC
u/ARKnife · 5 pointsr/knives

We all have different lifestyles, so the best EDC knife opinion will be different from one person to another.

My choice would be either the Boker+ Urban Trapper (wayy under $100) or the Cold Steel Recon 1 in CTS XHP with a deep carry pocket clip (for harder use).

u/GreenLizardHands · 5 pointsr/EDC

Firstly, some unsolicited advice. If there's a low chance of the knife getting confiscated for whatever reason, I'd say save up a little more scratch and get something a little nicer. Alright, now that I've said that, I'm going to assume that you're going to completely ignore it. (Which is fine.)

Ontario RAT 2 always comes highly recommended. You pretty much can't go wrong here. It is a liner lock, which will be a little easier to use one-handed than a lockback. Though maybe only if you're right handed.

I think if I were going for a Spyderco in that range, I'd go with the Ambitious instead. (Right under $30, blade is 2.25 inches.) Or, save up a few extra bucks and go with the Persistence (Just under $35, blade is 2.75 in). The Byrd line is designed by Spyderco, but made by other companies under Spyderco's direction. I'm sure they are a decent value, but if that's what you want, I think you'd probably be better off, and happier, saving your money and getting a Delica 4.

You may also want to look into the Buck Vantage. It's a flipper, so easy opening is there. I think it's a liner lock as well. The steel is okay, but expect to be sharpening it fairly often (maybe once a week if you want to keep it razor sharp).

Another option is the Ka-Bar Dozier. It uses AUS-8A steel, which is pretty good for the price range (in my opinion). Thumb stud, lockback. This one's $20, so a little below your budget actually. Could use some of the money saved to get some sort of sharpening system (DMT Card maybe?)

Blue Ridge Zancudo, designed by the same people behind the RAT series. Pretty much the same idea, but I think the blade shape on the Zancudo is a little better if you need to be able to pierce things.

Last one, the Kershaw Shuffle. A little smaller, at 2.4 in blade length. But has a bottle opener, if you're into that sort of thing. Also, cheaper than any of the rest of the options here. I also think that this one probably has the best blade-shape, in my opinion. It's almost all belly.

Personally, I have found that having the longest knife you have is good, but a lot of the time most of that edge isn't put to good use. Sometimes it's too long, which makes it cumbersome. If you're mostly opening boxes and mail and stuff like that, something closer to a 2.5 inch blade might be more the ticket. I find that it makes it easier to make precise cuts.

u/mship · 5 pointsr/knives

I bought both off of Amazon, but the black one was the one I bought first. It was about $10.00. here is a linkhttp://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B001CPGVB4/ref=oh_details_o01_s00_i00

I bought it because I liked the look. Needless to say it was a cheap thing and I really only cut about 5 things with it before a screw popped out of the handle. Also the locking on the knife is very flimsy.

The Kershaw Cryo has about the same weight and is about half the size. The blade is also sharper and the locking it much more secure.
The blade is much smaller (which is better, because I am in the knife police state of New York). I got it for $34.90 off of Amazon. The seller I bought it from is now selling it for $49.

The Kershew is an obvious better purchase then the cheaper Mtech Chainlink.

You can still find most old Benchmades on the used market. I don't see that many of the older 800 series AFCK models kicking around (yours is a Benchmade 804 AFCK) but they do turn up. See this one (the round hole version) as an example on ebay.

FWIW, I actually greatly prefer the Benchmade 710 myself, and it's a regular production model you can buy all the time.

Alternately, if you think he loves the opening hole on the AFCK, you could just buy him a Spyderco Military.

The AFCK, 710, and Military are all very nice knives in any case, though I prefer the 710 of the bunch.

u/xNS5 · 3 pointsr/knifeclub

Boker kwaiken.

Edit: It's classy, relatively small, and not as threatening as a PM2. If looking scary plays a factor, maybe get the Boker Urban Trapper or the classic. Comes in Cocobolo and Carbon Fiber. And of course the G10.

With the Kwaiken, comes in Carbon Fiber, stonewash titanium, G10 and Micarta. Could also get the mini-kwaiken

Edit2: OOR you can get the buck 055. Tiny ass knife that you barely notice is there, doesn't need a clip, and is the opposite of intimidating.

u/Riley_UK · 3 pointsr/Knife_Swap

Heads up, new on Amazon these are $59.

u/Twilight_Flopple · 3 pointsr/knifeclub

The Kraton version of the Mark 1 Navy knife Because it fixes every problem I have with the classic Ka-Bar. The crossguard on the classic keeps you from putting your thumb on the spine for a more useful grip, while the Navy Ka-Bar only has a guard on the edge side. The classic comes in a shorter version, but it's really just a scaled down version of the original, so the handle is much too small for larger hands and doesn't fill the palm comfortably. The Navy Ka-Bar has a much more filling grip as well as a shorter blade that's still broad enough to be very strong. Plus it's nice and cheap.

gift 1 A keyboard for my new desktop

I want this bwecause I am in the process if building a new computer (all of the pieces are comin in today, tomorrow and Wednesday. I don't want to have this fancy new computer and still use a keyboard from the late 90's.

gift 2 A knife (for utility purposes)

I end up having to deal with sealed boxes a lot at work, and having my own cheap-ish knife would make everything easier.

I'm sure you both look stunning today, but I have no way of knowing. So stunning until proved otherwise.

-edit- C'mon...gimme.

u/chickinkickir · 3 pointsr/knives

Maybe the Ka-Bar Mark 1? It's 11.5 inches long though...

u/eltonnovs · 3 pointsr/knives

Kukris don't have to be that expensive if don't mind a 'modern' take on them.

Besides the Ontario and Condor /u/lowlife9 mentioned maybe consider Cold steel Royal Kukri or Ka-bar Kukri and compliment it with a Ontario Rat 7 or Rat 5, that's a pretty can-do-all combination..

u/beltfedvendetta · 3 pointsr/EDC

If you want assisted opening, Kershaw is your primary go-to knife company. Anything with "SpeedSafe" is their assisted opening mechanism. Bonus points is that SpeedSafe is legal in all 50 states (although the knife itself might not be due to length).

I would highly recommend the Kershaw Knockout. It's one hell of a nice blade with a slim profile (so it doesn't get in the way of reaching into your pockets and pulling things out), doesn't weigh much, and kicks hard when opening.

The Kershaw Shallot is still my favorite carry knife despite owning over a dozen production folders and knives that cost 3-4 times as much. It has a slight recurve in the blade, it's thin, it's an amazing slicer, doesn't weigh much, and deploys fast. It doesn't have left-hand pocket clip carry, however.

Another is the Kershaw Blur which is a bit of a beefier recurve bladed knife that is a non-flipper (deployment with thumb studs only). One of Kershaw's most popular models, after the Leek. Keep in mind that the grip-y "TracTech" inserts that the Blur has is kinda like more dense and rougher cork. It can tear up and wear away at your pant's pocket over time. Like the Shallot, it also does not have lefthanded pocket clip carry.

u/shiftypoo269 · 3 pointsr/knives

I'm just going to leave this here.

Edit: How could I forget to mention Moras. Also Ka bar's Becker line is a great value. I would suggest not going with the BK2 as they are sharpened pry bars, but people seem to like them.

u/Othy · 3 pointsr/knives

Looks just like a Gerber Prodigy with a fancy handle.

u/havock999 · 3 pointsr/knifeclub

If you don't mind waiting a couple weeks Amazon (not a third party) has the ZT0566CF for $95.50 here. ETA is mid to late March.

u/JeCsGirl · 3 pointsr/IAmA

My fiance is a paramedic and former fire fighter.. Gift ideas really depend on how much you're spending.

Cheaper: One of those pocket knives with the ends that can break windows and cut seatbelts like this one. I don't think they can ever have too many of these.

More expensive: A stethoscope. My fiance got this one for a graduation present and still loves it.

u/ulpisen · 2 pointsr/blowit

on amazon you can buy a [license plate flipper] (https://www.amazon.com/License-plate-frame-Flipper-type/dp/B01FVYDI6M) although obviously using it can get you in a ton of trouble

you can also buy a [three edged knife] (https://www.amazon.com/Cyclone-Tri-Edged-Spiraling-Dagger-Custom/dp/B01NAZK69G), so if you stab someone with it the wound doesn't close up and they die pretty quickly without medical attention, using them in war is concidered a war crime

He sounds like a good recipient for a Buddha Board.

I'd also think of a pile of great books that delve into the therapy/specialty he's interested in, knowledge goes with any lifestyle. Or maybe a book on how to build furniture yourself that's easy to make and light on the environment.

> Preferably something basic, that improves quality of life and will last a lifetime.

Victorinox Swiss army knife with lots of necessary features. For $50 I don't know too many things that will last a lifetime, maybe someone else here knows better.

u/fromkentucky · 2 pointsr/Survival

I had an Ontario RAT-5 for a while. About the same size as an ESEE 5, but with a thinner blade and full-flat grind. The handle was uncomfortably bulky and although it held up to my abuse, I just didn't like it. The blade was thin enough to do finer carving tasks, but it was too wide and the edge profile was terrible. I ended up using my Mora knife and Fiskars hatchet more and the RAT-5 was relegated to batoning duty and even in that I preferred the hatchet. In fact, I carved my first bow drill kit with that Fiskars.

I was considering stepping up to an Ontario RAT-7, but instead I traded the RAT-5 for a KaBar Becker BK7, which is a BEAST of a knife. Longer than an ESEE 5, but just as thick and with a similar profile. It really impressed me with the amount of work it could do and how easy it was to use, but it was heavy and just too fat to do anything but chop and split, so again, I was using my Mora and hatchet for most stuff.

I finally decided to try a different direction and traded the BK7 for a much smaller ESEE 4. Around the same time I bought a Bahco Laplander, and I am in love with this combo. The Bahco eats through 1-2" branches with ease (while generating plenty of sawdust for tinder) and the ESEE is just long enough to baton them into kindling and carve up some feather sticks. The best part is, the ESEE 4 and Bahco together weigh about as much as the BK7 in its sheath, and take up about as much space, but they are FAR more versatile.

I realize the ESEE 4 may be just out of your price range, but Kabar makes a similar knife called the BK16. However, the ESEE comes with a lifetime warranty.

I still take my Fiskars with me occasionally, but for weekend camping, I can process plenty of firewood with the ESEE and Bahco faster than I ever could with any of the bigger knives. If I needed to build a shelter or was venturing into unfamiliar territory, I'd want the hatchet because it's such a capable tool.

The ESEE 5 was designed for downed pilots who can't fit a hatchet or folding saw into their kit but may need to build a shelter, so they made it big and heavy. I understand first hand that big knives are appealing and certainly have their strong points, but their size, weight and thickness can make them difficult to use in a lot of ways and in reality, a big knife will never chop as well as a decent hatchet, because the knife's weight is centered just above the handle, not directly behind a huge wedge that drives into the wood. What you really want in a survival knife is versatility and I've spent a lot of time, money and energy figuring out that size doesn't add versatility.

u/Prince_Jellyfish · 2 pointsr/EDC

For comparison, this knife is available on Amazon Prime for $42.23.

By far my favorite knife company. I'd get this next. Decent price too.

u/BatCountry9 · 2 pointsr/knives

Spyderco Military may fit your needs. Also, if you're a LEO, you can probably get your hands on an automatic knife easier than many of us if you want one. The whole Benchmade Black line is designed for LE/Military use; they're tough, made for hard use, and make reliable weapons if need be (could be out of your price range tho).

Regarding Spyderco, they're popular because they have a wide range of blades that fit any budget. Even their inexpensive knives like the Tenacious/Persistence are beloved by knife enthusiasts for their value (a quick search on here or Bladeforums will confirm this).

Not everyone loves Spyderco tho. Some people don't like the look of them. The Spidey Hole can be a devisive issue. Personally, I love them and I've been buying them since I was in high school. I'm not a huge fan of serrations, but Spyderco does serrations about as well if not better than anyone else. Just my opinion, tho. This is the knife world, which means there's plenty of people that would call me a raging idiot for liking Spyderco so much. Honestly, the best way to find out for yourself is to go to your local blade shop and handle a few. Check out your buddies' knives and ask lots of questions. There's a knife for everyone out there somewhere.

u/fluffton · 2 pointsr/ECR_UK

Well there's the victorinox super/deluxe tinker which has scissors, pliers, tweezers and a round phillips head screwdriver which is pretty much everything you need to wrap and install a coil. Just carry a little allen key in your wallet for grub screws. To cut the wire just bend it back and forth until it snaps.

u/llamasutraa · 2 pointsr/knives

Couldn't find anything exactly like the fact but with a flipper, but as far as large, thin flippers there's a few options, with Brad Zinker designs probably being your best bet. His customs are expensive but he does have a collab with boker thats a 3.75in flipper that isn't overbuilt, the Urban Trapper Gentleman Knife https://www.amazon.com/01BO730-Trapper-Knives-Straight-Silver/dp/B00K60OSRK. Also comes in wood, but that strays from the Benchmade Fact a bit too much i think. Other contenders would be the cold steel luzon medium https://www.coldsteel.com/medium-luzon.html or this stedmon knife design i found while looking https://www.knifecenter.com/item/SKCC0601/stedemon-knife-company-c06-flipper-knife-440c-two-tone-straight-back-blade-carbon-fiber-and-black-g10-handles. Please forgive me for asking the obvious, but did you search Amazon? They seem to have a large collection of tanto knives available for sale, with prices that range from $20-something up to ten times that much. Here's an example for you.

With that said, please keep in mind that you have to pay for quality. A $34.99 knife with a blade of AUS-8 steel is simply not going to compare to a hand-forged Japanese knife. But it might be good enough for you, so enjoy!

u/king_human · 2 pointsr/knifeclub

Here are some options:

Ka-Bar:

Mark 1 Kraton handle

BK5

Neck Knife

Condor:

Bushcraft Basic

Kephart Knife

Bushlore

Basically-a-Mora-options:

Hultafors Heavy Duty

Cold Steel Finn Hawk

Ka-Bar's 1095 is pretty damn good. The Magnum Camp Knife is bigger than you were looking for, but it's a solid value. Condor knives are very high value, but can be rough around the edges. The Hultafors and Cold Steel knives I linked are stainless, but should do well in a kayak. All these knifes will take a beating and should be useful for a wide variety of tasks (some better than others, of course, but I wanted to offer a wide selection of size, shape, and grind).

I feel the same way about the Coldsteel Recon 1 I just got. I'd been using a Kershaw Kuro for work, which is a small knife. The Recon 1 is fricken huge.

I'm thinking about buying a Leek, though.

Does anyone know what knife would be good for Landscaping use? Cutting arbor bracing, plant material, and the like. It would have to be decently resistant to rusting, as it will probably be getting wet a lot.

I have a Cold Steel Kobun that I use as my petty knife in the kitchen and I love it. It's $30 from Amazon, hollow ground very thin at the edge from a good chunk of Aus-8 steel. Great lightweight sheath, 5" blade length, slim but ergonomic handle.

The thing that really makes the Kobun stand out against the other blades suggested so far is its blade shape. The Kobun has a long belly on the primary edge which makes it a great slicer, while retaining all the awesome tip strength and the useful "second point" of a tanto-style blade.

u/LMNOBeast · 1 pointr/BudgetBlades

A little late to the party... You are following the same trajectory as me. I'm just now expanding into fixed blades, but before you put the brakes on budget folders you should check out a few more options.

The Coast FX350 (9cr18mov, G-10, frame lock, 3-position clip) is a beauty for under $20. The BX315 (9cr18mov, rubberized handle, lock back) is great for wet work and is currently selling for just under $15—it has a sheath instead of a clip because the large rubberized grip doesn't slide in and out of pockets very well. The BX315 also has a little brother, the BX300.

If you like the Kershaw Link's profile then you should try a Flock (8cr13mov, FRN, tip-up clip) that's going for $15. It is a dealer exclusive that was poorly marketed and escaped most people's notice. Probably one of the best Kershaw deals going right now.

Spyderco's Spy-DK is currently selling for $30. It's a special non-locking model for Denmark knife laws. It's old school slip joint action but you get a N690Co blade that is a step up from their more expensive budget folders.

Back to fixed blades...

As I mentioned in another comment, Schrade is a good place to start for budget fixed blades—check out the SCHF36 Frontier for under $30. One thing to note is many fixed blades in this category are going to use 1095 steel which typically requires some maintenance, but most are powder coated to address this. Don't let 1095 scare you away from some nice options.

Now, I know you are looking for budget knives but there is a mid-range option that you may want on your wishlist. If you have an Ontario Rat folder (which you should) then you might want to compliment it with a Rat 3, 5, or 7. Like I said, I wouldn't consider Ontario fixed blades as 'budget' but they're a bargain compared to brands like Tops.

I hope this helps and have fun exploring, this rabbit hole runs DEEP.

I carried this Smith and Wesson M&P Tactical on a daily basis. Never had a problem, even when I was searched by campus pd. Carried one all through college

u/GeneralGump · 1 pointr/knifeclub

I'd say go for an ESEE or RAT. You can get them from 3-7 inches I think.

Here's and ESEE 6

and here's a RAT-5 and a RAT-7

I have heard that some of their other knives aren't as high quality as they once were. I still hear good things from people who own LMF2's, though.

I just ordered this from Amazon because I need a new beater knife and it came up on my recommendations.

u/Sengura · 1 pointr/knives

I'd probably go with a Kobun from Cold Steel. It's a pretty sweet looking and a very effective tactical blade. The sheeth isn't that great, but you can't expect much from a 30$ knife. Uses AUS8A stainless steel, which is pretty good for a knife that cheap. It's also very light and sturdy (full tang) making it a very good tactical blade IMO.

I've got a few you might like:

(None of these links are referral ones, by the way)

Dirt cheap.

Nice knife, it holds an edge. I used it for a long time until I upgraded.

A bit more expensive.

Not as slim but a nice knife for the price.

In your price range

This is a great knife for the price, it will hold and edge and it is pretty slim.

There are other versions of this knife, you might like the Recon Mini

If you can spend the extra money, then I recommend this one to you.

It's a great knife, you can go without sharpening it for weeks and it will shave hairs off your arm, assisted opening, and it's a decent size for carrying.

If you wear a long shirt, no one will see the clip in your pocket.

u/thanatos31 · 1 pointr/knives

If you do like it and then come into a bit more money, take a look at the skyline or shallot. Both made in USA (if you're into that, generally means better quality regardless), have better steel, use the flipper, and the shallot's assisted (though I did do away with the speedsafe on my shallot - like I said, I prefer unassisted - but still a great knife).

You don't need a full end-of-the-world kit with you, but keeping a knife handy is usually a good idea. I keep one of these in my car. It makes a good beater knife, plus it has a window breaker and seatbelt cutter. At about $20 it is hard to go wrong.

u/Craig · 1 pointr/knifeclub

I'm not a big Cold Steel fan, but I sure do love my Kobun. Feels great in hand, looks great and will definitely be there for you in an 'oh shit' moment. Mine mostly lives in my car. Even though I don't use it often, I have considered getting a second one (at that price, they are almost irresistible).

I've got a Mora, too. You simply can't go wrong with those things.

u/Mellema · 1 pointr/bugout

This Kershaw has the same tools for much cheaper.

u/tarnishedfork · 1 pointr/EDC

Love it. Spring assisted opening powerful enough that it comes with its own safety, great weight at 7.5 ounces, and a glass breaker. Only downside is the screws for the belt clip loosen up pretty quickly. Here’s the link if you wanna check it out.

One that I recently bought was the Leatherman CS, it has the same tools as the little SD victorinox but I like the design and feel a little more. Leatherman has the Skeletool as well if you're interested in something bigger.

On a classier side I really liked my Buck Chairman. It's only knives, no tools but it's a quality product.

Personally I always carry my Victorinox one handed Trekker in my pocket and my SOG Trident in my backpack just for good measure.

The exposed tang like that does no good at all. It's just styling.

One of the most basic bushcraft skills is firemaking with a bow and drill. This requires making shallow holes for both the tip and the butt of the drill to rest while it is being twisted. The ability to put a hole in a piece of wood is useful in other contexts, too.

It's very easy to make a hole by putting your palm over the butt of the knife while twisting and rotating it with your other hand. Safe and easy, and essentially impossible with an exposed tang.

It jabs you whenever your sheathed knife presses against your body. It gets cold. It makes it impossible to use the butt as a hammer. And it gives you nothing in return. It's more awkward to use it for drawing sparks than the spine of the knife, and unless you expect to encounter a lot of unbroken windshields, it's pretty much otherwise useless.

This is a useful way to do it:

http://www.amazon.com/Ka-Bar-Kraton-Handled-Straight-Knife/dp/B004NN3KF2

And if you don't want the added weight, then at least do this:

The gerber prodigy is a very nice nice for the price:

That would be your typical 'combat' knife, and the one I would recommend for this price range. My experience with it was stellar, but I never had a purpose for it so I sold mine.

My EDC knife is a SOG twitch 2:
http://smile.amazon.com/SOG-Specialty-Knives-TWI12-CP-2-65-Inch/dp/B0009JXR8Y/ref=sr_1_4?ie=UTF8&qid=1449118357&sr=8-4&keywords=sog+twitch
This is a small flip knife, the steel is great. I would highly recommend this.

Your other option would be a morakniv
http://smile.amazon.com/Morakniv-Bushcraft-Tactical-4-3-Inch-Plastic/dp/B009O01H0Y/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1449118465&sr=8-2&keywords=mora+tactical
I've never owned a mora, but I've heard great things about them. They make some cool bushcraft ones (linked) but their specialty is boot knives.

Overall I wouldn't worry too much about it, I'm a grunt and I've had tons of knives and multitools. A few such as the twitch passed the test of time, but far more often I had (foldeing) knives wear out due to grit, and so on. In the army I've been given and issued tons of knives, it's always nice getting a new one; they're not expected to be bifl.

u/brielem · 1 pointr/Knife_Swap

as a general rule, you overpay if you buy knives directly from their makers. Look at the MSRP on spyderco's website for example: they're all way above regular retail prices. The Spyderco Military is 259,95 on their website, but bladehq has it for 149,95, and Amazon for 147,37. Their MSRP is almost 70% above normal retail!

A lot of people are probably going to reccomend a knife with no point for safety reasons but I am a big believer in the tanto style point with a half serrated edge for emergency use. I've had the Cold Steel Recon 1 for a while now and I love it!

http://www.amazon.com/Cold-Steel-Tactical-Handle-ComboEdge/dp/B00322HR2C/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1415730258&sr=8-2&keywords=cold+steel+tanto+folder

Check it out, it would make quite the gift and could possibly safe their or someone else's life someday.

u/INEV3RMISS · -5 pointsr/knives

Sounds like you want a cold steel- many sizes- strong lock- great steel (I forget which exactly but it made a 60 on the hardness scale(very good/not brittle)) and best of all the blade thickness stays at 4mm until the very end, so even the folders can pry-
Here's a good example of a knife that'll meet your needs: http://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B00322HR2C
