Here's a few tips from a long time classical lover:

Schubert/Schuman: Piano Sonatas, performed by Murray Perahia

This is one of the most incredible recordings I've experienced. The passion, the grand sweeping emotion, the skill. Simply amazing.

A staple is Beethoven's symphony No. 9. But why not hear it from a purist? Christopher Hogwood and the Academy of Ancient Music. I think this is a wonderful rendition and stands out in crowd of recordings of this piece.

For something a little different, try Astor Piazzola, who is now accepted as a classical musician/composer. I really like: The Rough Dancer and the Cyclical Night (Tango Apasionado). He sweats on the slow notes and blows through fast passages with ease.

If you want baroque, anything by Glenn Gould.

If you like romantic, get some Chopin performed by Rubinstein.

I've not found a Debussy performer who stands apart, but I'm somewhat partial to Weissenberg.

For a little angular brain damage, get a copy of Scriabin's preludes.

Byron Janis has a command performance of Pictures at an Exhibition out.Dark, morose Makes you think of drinking vodka in Russia and sinking into a winter long depression, with an uplift of bright lights pulling you up in the end.

Chopin's Berceuse is a wonderful float through the sky experience, as well as his nocturne in Db.

And you'll need some Stravinsky to round it out. I've not gotten any recordings in my collection that knock me out. Maybe someone else can speak up and I can fill up my in-box with new pleasures.

There's a whole CD of actual humans performing arrangements of Nancarrow's studies, which is apparently out of print. I love this CD.

A whole bunch of them. Those were a big hit for EM when the first album came out. Very fun to play.
