I totally forgot about the thriller (sub?)plot but I did read it years ago so probably not the author's fault. :D So yeah. As I said, still posted on Wattpad even now but fully published with the extended edition available for sale. Whew! Nice to know I wasn't dreaming. :)

The author (A.V. Geiger) actually has a few books published and I believe at least most of them have similar setups, with a fully edited but shorter version available free on Wattpad.

Take this with a grain (handful) of salt, because I never followed it up and can't remember anything but the basic plot which would probably kick back two-thirds of all YA fiction ever so I doubt I'll ever find it again, but a piece of original fiction I found on Wattpad of all places was ostensibly offered a publishing deal.

Like I said, I can't remember the details (whether it was an e-book offer or full publishing etc) but the author definitely claimed that someone had offered to publish it. The 'hook' (seeing as they were telling me this having already finished the story) was that it was going to be essentially an 'extended edition' - additional scenes etc that would not be uploaded online.

I really wish I'd followed it up now, as the writer was decent but the story also felt complete, so I would be interested to see how it read with the additional scenes or whatever - whether it felt padded or still read smoothly and whatnot. But essentially I believe the claim was that as the author had such a good readership on the website the publisher saw there was a market for the story and decided to take a gamble.

So, there you go. Completely anecdotal, no proof whatsoever, but the very vague idea that maybe, possibly, it can be done! You're welcome.

I'm gonna go see whether I can find it now.

Edit: turns out this storyline has now been copied a million times, so potentially the author did sort of luck out with timing their idea. Still looking, though.
