If you think about movies that teens are likely to see (Knocked Up, Saved!, and Juno among them), it's kind of weird that abortion can be discussed more openly than in books, even if all of those characters decide to go through with the pregnancy instead. Usually you think of books tackling the taboos before they make it to the big screen.

The YA books (that I've read) have been more likely to deal with forced pregnancy via artificial insemination (The Jewel and Eve), perhaps as a more roundabout way to bring up reproductive topics in a way that everyone can agree is bad.

Also, shoutouts to The Bitter Kingdom and Trickster's Queen where girls actually go out of their way to obtain birth control and wait for it to take effect.

This is bloodsong, by Melvyn Burgess, the sequel to bloodtide. Based on the volsunga saga in a dystopian future.

It doesn't sound it from this description but I swear it is this book. I promise.

Agreed. In fact, even his "Young Adult" Ship Breaker was superb; quite similar themes to the Windup Girl but set in a subtly different world. I have the sequel The Drowned Cities on my bookshelf to read as soon as I have time.

If you ever read Hatchet, you should try its companion book The River as a quick read. More survival than mystery.

i have wanted to read this book for quite some time! Ive read some of his other books and really liked them!

my three faves currently are Oryx and Crake by Margaret Atwood, Graveyard Book by Neil Gaiman, and Golden Compass by Phillip Pullman
they are all page-turner (s)

i love book contests!!! =)

It might be Far North. Not exactly the same plot, but the plane crashes (or lands in the water?), and the pilot "rides" the plane over some falls. Two boys and an elderly man are stranded, if I recall -- no dog that I remember. Eventually the two boys are alone. I don't remember them starting a fire with a lightening-struck branch, but they did have to survive the Canadian wilderness in winter.

I believe it’s The Girl Who Wouldn’t Die by Randall Platt.

Ok look, It’s not entirely a prison but I think it counts (?). It’s called The Bunker Diary by Kevin Brooks, you probably know about it. Here’s an Amazon link ( #notsponsored ) : https://www.amazon.com/Bunker-Diary-Fiction-Young-Adult/dp/146775420X

I think it’s a really good book, the writing is on point and it has great characters.

u/Alabama_Man · 1 pointr/AskReddit

I wouldn't worry too much about it. My sister is the same way, she's a college graduate who's always reading something (currently a 1200 page novel called The Homelanders) and is extremely intelligent. She just prefers to unwind and veg when she watches movies.

This one this one or this one!

Illuminae and Gemina by Aime Kaufman & Jay Kristoff. I just read Illuminae and am now listening to Gemina. The writing takes some getting used to (the book is made to look like a dossier of emails, IMs, maps, interviews, etc.), but after a while I didn't really notice it.

Happy Birthday! A friend of mine was going to get me this book for my birthday and seems to have permanently forgotten. Even if you don't have a big birthday, have a good one. Some of my best birthdays have been between 2/3 friends and myself, as opposed to the big parties.
