I've been visiting / living in Thailand since 2011, it's a great place to be based in and live. I've traveled most of the country and provinces overland, much of it on a motorcycle, and probably seen as much of the country as anyone alive. I'm fluent in Thai and wrote a book on how to speak Thai: https://www.amazon.com/Speak-Thai-Easiest-Immediately-RocketPack-ebook/dp/B07DK6XT8P

If you think it only deserves two weeks you're only experiencing a very narrow slice of backpacker/tourist Thailand. Leave Khao San, Sukhumvit, Nimmanhamein etc.

Almost any country can be wonderful if you find the neighborhood you love to live in. I didn't like my first week in Seoul but when I discovered Jongno, I fell in love. Same with Kadikoy in Istanbul. In Bangkok I love Thonburi, it feels like home to me.

The types of stories I'm reading in this book make it out to be more than culture, and more like a corrupt justice system.
Universal human rights deserve to have someone stand up for them, regardless of how:

I don't understand why people are hating on Bangkok, I personally consider it one of the most interesting cities on planet Earth.

Get this Nancy Chandler map, it shows everything interesting in Bangkok: https://www.amazon.com/Nancy-Chandlers-Map-Bangkok-27th/dp/6169046260/ref=dp_ob_title_bk

Remember, you have to subtract almost an entire day whenever you travel from one place to another. So if you go to a beach that leaves you 9 days to explore. You might consider flying into Phukett (or Chiang Mai), then returning home from Bangkok. You can take the night train or bus from Chiang Mai to Bangkok saving a day (and a hotel).

Bangkok: The Story of a City by Alex Waugh is pretty good history wise. It's kinda dense, but really covers everything.

It's actually a really good read with a lot of information. It completely changed my strategy for picking a girl in a bar.

However a better read is the sequel How I Got The Most Bang For My Buck in Thailand

Fair enough. Seriously though, stay out of the Bangkok street protests. It is only a matter of time before a tourist gets hit. It might seem safe but explosions are happening pretty regularly. While I would hate for anyone to be injured, if it were a tourist it would also cause a lot of harm to the industry many Thais rely on. I have come to genuinely care about the Thai people and I would not want to see so many families impacted by a tourist being in the wrong place at the wrong time.

May I suggest the HI Hostel near Victory Circle as being a great, safe launch pad on your first days that is (was?) out of the protest areas and just a lovely place. Easy to get to on Airport Rail (then one stop on the SkyTrain) and very easy to the skytrain. The queues for the change counters and ticket machines were abysmal when I was last there so pay the extra to get a rabbit card and load it up.

Don't miss Chatuchak Market on a Saturday or Sunday and if you want to be really awesome buy a Nancy Chandler Bangkok Map in advance. http://www.amazon.com/Nancy-Chandlers-Bangkok-26th-Edition/dp/6169046236

> Some day in August 2005, Mike stumbled across my blog. Randomly. He was apparently googling for something but till today he refused to say what he was googling for ("I really forgot!"), which makes me highly suspicious that it is either something pervertic ("Is it normal to want to fuck horses?"), or something gay ("How to curl my hair like Pamela Anderson").

What she really means is : He was googling for: http://www.amazon.co.uk/Most-Bang-Your-Buck-Thailand-ebook/dp/B0058DX2EK

Edit: Also the pacing in this is god awful. It's pretty hard to read. Who is T
