When doing this, take the valve stem out of the rim. That gives excess gasses somewhere to go. It's like using a Cheetah on the tire, but it's a bit more creative. Aside from playing with fire, it's mostly safe.

I've done this. Basically when you look at a wheel on a car what you are seeing is rubber inflated to the point of pushing itself tightly onto a metal rim. That's it. Now, in order to put the rubber onto the rim it has to be smaller than the rim, which means there is a definite gap between the rubber and the rim. Trying to seal the rubber onto the rim with an air compressor is like trying to pour water into a sieve and call it a cup, not going to happen, you need a rapid and massive influx of air to push the rubber against the rim faster than it can escape. Usually, tire shops use something like this to do the job, but say you don't want to buy one, or are out in the wild and your tire needs to be replaced while off-roading, you can just spray a bunch of hairspray (or similar flammable aerosol) and cause a small explosion that basically does the same thing, allowing you to then use a compressor to inflate it normally.

They make a mechanical version called a cheetah but that's hit or miss in my experience.

Sounds a lot like a cheetah bead seater for putting tires on rims. It does the exact same thing and the tank isn't any more robust than a regular compressor tank as far as I know.
